Let $(A,Δ)$ be a multiplier Hopf algebra. In general, the underlying algebra $A$ need not have an identity and the coproduct $Δ$ does not map $A$ into $A\otimes A$ but rather into its multiplier algebra $M(A\otimes A)$. In this paper, we study {\it some tools} that are frequently used when dealing with such multiplier Hopf algebras and that are typical for working with algebras without identity in this context.
The {\it basic ingredient} is a unital left $A$-module $X$. And the basic construction is that of extending the module by looking at linear maps $ρ:A\to X$ satisfying $ρ(aa')=aρ(a')$ where $a,a'\in A$. We write the module action as multiplication. Of course, when $x\in X$, and when $ρ(a)=ax$, we get such a linear map. And if $A$ has an identity, all linear maps $ρ$ have this form for $x=ρ(1)$. However, the point is that in the case of a non-unital algebra, the space of such maps is in general strictly bigger than $X$ itself. We get an {\it extended module}, denoted by $\bar X$ (for reasons that will be explained in the paper).
We study all sorts of more complicated situations where such extended modules occur and we illustrate all of this with {\it several examples}, from very simple ones to more complex ones where iterated extensions come into play. We refer to cases that appear in the literature.
We use this basic idea of extending modules to explain, in a more rigorous way, the so-called {\it covering technique}, which is needed when using {\it Sweedler notations} for coproducts and coactions. Again, we give many examples and refer to the existing literature where this technique is applied.
It is well-known that any weak Hopf algebra gives rise to a Hopf algebroid. Moreover it is possible to characterize those Hopf algebroids that arise in this way. Recently, the notion of a weak Hopf algebra has been extended to the case of algebras without identity. This led to the theory of weak multiplier Hopf algebras. Similarly also the theory of Hopf algebroids was recently developed for algebras without identity. They are called multiplier Hopf algebroids. Then it is quite natural to investigate the expected link between weak multiplier Hopf algebras and multiplier Hopf algebroids. This r…
The main purpose of this paper is to unify the theory of actions of Hopf algebras, weak Hopf algebras and multiplier Hopf algebras to one of actions of weak multiplier Hopf algebras introduced by A. Van Daele and S. H. Wang. Using such developed actions, we will define the notion of a module algebra over weak multiplier Hopf algebras and construct their smash products. The main result is the duality theorem for actions and their dual actions on the smash product of weak multiplier Hopf algebras. As an application, we recover the main results found in the literature for weak Hopf algebras, mult…
This paper generalizes the Drinfel'd twist to the multiplier Hopf algebra case. For a multiplier Hopf algebra $A$ with a twist $J$, we construct a new multiplier Hopf algebra $A^{J}$. Furthermore, if $A$ is quasitriangular, then $A^{J}$ is also. Finally, for a counimodular algebraic quantum group $A$, $A^{J}$ is an algebraic quantum group.
For a multiplier Hopf algebra pairing $\langle A, B\rangle$, we construct a class of group-cograded multiplier Hopf algebras $D(A, B)$, generalizing the classical construction of finite dimensional Hopf algebras introduced by Panaite and Staic Mihai. Furthermore, if the multiplier Hopf algebra pairing admits a canonical multiplier in $M(B\otimes A)$ we show the existence of quasitriangular structure on $D(A, B)$. As an application, some special cases and examples are provided.
Let $A$ be a multiplier Hopf coquasigroup. If the faithful integrals exist, then they are unique up to scalar. Furthermore, if $A$ is of discrete type, then its integral duality $\widehat{A}$ is a Hopf quasigroup, and the biduality $\widehat{\widehat{A}}$ is isomorphic to the original $A$ as multiplier Hopf coquasigroups. This biduality theorem also holds for a class of Hopf quasigroups with faithful integrals.
In this paper we study twisted algebras of multiplier Hopf ($^*$-)algebras which generalize all kinds of smash products such as generalized smash products, twisted smash products, diagonal crossed products, L-R-smash products, two-sided crossed products and two-sided smash products for the ordinary Hopf algebras appeared in [P-O].
The Larson-Sweedler theorem says that a finite-dimensional bialgebra with a faithful integral is a Hopf algebra. The result has been generalized to finite-dimensional weak Hopf algebras by Vecsernyés. In this paper, we show that the result is still true for weak multiplier Hopf algebras. The notion of a weak multiplier bialgebra was introduced by Böhm, Gómez-Torrecillas and López-Centella. In this note it is shown that a weak multiplier bialgebra with a regular and full coproduct is a regular weak multiplier Hopf algebra if there is a faithful set of integrals. This result is important for the…
Let $(A,Δ)$ be a regular weak multiplier Hopf algebra. Denote by $E$ the canonical idempotent of $(A,Δ)$ and by $B$ the image of the source map. Recall that $B$ is a non-degenerate algebra, sitting nicely in the multiplier algebra $M(A)$ of $A$ so that also $M(B)$ can be viewed as a subalgebra of $M(A)$. Assume that $u,v$ are invertible elements in $M(B)$ so that $E(vu\otimes 1)E=E$. This last condition is obviously fulfilled if $u$ and $v$ are each other inverses, but there are also other cases. Now modify $Δ$ and define $Δ'(a)=(u\otimes 1)Δ(a)(v\otimes 1)$ for all $a \in A$. We show in this …
In this paper, we continue the study of weak multiplier Hopf algebras. We recall the notions of the source and target maps $\varepsilon_s$ and $\varepsilon_t$, as well as of the source and target algebras. Then we investigate these objects further. Among other things, we show that the canonical idempotent $E$ (which is eventually $Δ(1)$) belongs to the multiplier algebra $M(B\otimes C)$ where $B=\varepsilon_s(A)$ and $C=\varepsilon_t(A)$ and that it is a separability idempotent. We also consider special cases and examples in this paper. In particular, we see how for any weak multiplier Hopf al…
Let $A=\bigoplus_{p\in G}A_{p}$ be a multiplier Hopf $T$-coalgebra over a group $G$, in this paper we give the definition of the crossed left $A$-$G$-modules and show that the category of crossed left $A$-$G$-modules is a monoidal category. Finally we show that a family of multipliers $R = \{R_{p, q} \in M(A_{p}\otimes A_{q})\}_{p, q\in G}$ is a quasitriangular structure of a multiplier $T$-coalgebra $A$ if and only if the crossed left $A$-$G$-module category over $A$ is a braided monoidal category with the braiding $c$ defined by $R$, generalizing the main results in \cite{ZCL11} to the more …
Let $(A,Δ)$ be a weak multiplier Hopf algebra. It is a pair of a non-degenerate algebra $A$, with or without identity, and a coproduct $Δ$ on $A$, satisfying certain properties. The main difference with multiplier Hopf algebras is that now, the canonical maps $T_1$ and $T_2$ on $A\otimes A$, defined by $$T_1(a\otimes b)=Δ(a)(1\otimes b) \qquad\quad\text{and}\qquad\quad T_2(c\otimes a)=(c\otimes 1)Δ(a),$$ are no longer assumed to be bijective. Also recall that a weak multiplier Hopf algebra is called regular if its antipode is a bijective map from $A$ to itself. In this paper, we introduce and …
In partial action theory, a pertinent question is whenever given a partial (co)action of a Hopf algebra A on an algebra R, it is possible to construct an enveloping (co)action. The authors Alves and Batista, in [2],have shown that this is always possible if R has unit. We are interested in investigating the situation where both algebras A and R are nonunitary. A nonunitary natural extension for the concept of Hopf algebras was proposed by Van Daele, in [11], which is called multiplier Hopf algebra. Therefore, we will consider partial (co)actions of multipliers Hopf algebras on algebras not nec…
In this paper, we introduce and study the notion of cointegrals in a weak multiplier Hopf algebras $(A, Δ)$. A cointegral is a non-zero element $h$ in the multiplier algebra $M(A)$ such that $ah=\v_t(a)h$ for any $a\in A$. When $A$ has a faithful set of cointegrals (now we call $A$ of {\it discrete type}), we give a sufficient and necessary condition for existence of integrals on $A$. Then we consider a special case, i.e., $A$ has a single faithful cointegral, and we obtain more better results, such as $A$ is Frobenius, quasi-Frobenius, et al. Moreover when an algebraic quantum groupoid $A$ ha…
For a regular multiplier Hopf algebra $A$, the Yetter-Drinfel'd module category ${}_{A}\mathcal{YD}^{A}$ is equivalent to the centre $Z({}_{A}\mathcal{M})$ of the unital left $A$-module category ${}_{A}\mathcal{M}$. Then we introduce the generalized $(α, β)$-Yetter-Drinfel'd module categories ${}_{A}\mathcal{GYD}^{A}(α, β)$, which are treated as components of a braided $T$-category. Especially when $A$ is a coFrobenius Hopf algebra, ${}_{A}\mathcal{YD}^{A}(α, β)$ is isomorphic to the unital $\hat{A} \bowtie A(α, β)$-module category ${}_{\hat{A} \bowtie A(α, β)}\mathcal{M}$. Finally for a Yette…
Algebraic quantum groupoids have been developed by two of the authors (AVD and SHW) of this note in a series of papers. Regular multiplier Hopf algebroids are obtained also by two authors (TT and AVD). Integral theory and duality for those have been studied by one author here (TT). Finally, again two authors of us (TT and AVD) have investigated the relation between weak multiplier Hopf algebras and multiplier Hopf algebroids. In the paper 'Weak multiplier Hopf algebras III. Integrals and duality' (by AVD and SHW), one of the main results is that the dual of an algebraic quantum groupoid, admit…
We propose a categorical interpretation of multiplier Hopf algebras, in analogy to usual Hopf algebras and bialgebras. Since the introduction of multiplier Hopf algebras by Van Daele in [A. Van Daele, Multiplier Hopf algebras, {\em Trans. Amer. Math. Soc.}, {\bf 342}(2), (1994) 917--932.] such a categorical interpretation has been missing. We show that a multiplier Hopf algebra can be understood as a coalgebra with antipode in a certain monoidal category of algebras. We show that a (possibly non-unital, idempotent, non-degenerate, $k$-projective) algebra over a commutative ring $k$ is a multip…
In this work we define partial (co)actions on multiplier Hopf algebras, we also present examples and properties. From a partial comodule coalgebra we construct a partial smash coproduct generalizing the constructions made by the L. Delvaux, E. Batista and J. Vercruysse.
In the present work, we study Yetter-Drinfeld algebras over a pairing of multiplier Hopf algebras. Our main motivation is the construction of a self-dual theory of (C*-)algebraic quantum transformation groupoids. Instead of the standard characterization of Yetter-Drinfeld algebras given in the case of Hopf algebras, we develop an equivalent "only coaction" characterization in the framework of multiplier Hopf algebras. Finally, as a special case, we focus on Yetter-Drinfeld structures over Van Daele's algebraic quantum groups.
In this paper, we show that Hennings construction of invariants of framed links and 3-manifolds obtained from Hopf algebras can also be carried out for some algebraic quantum groups.
Based on a pairing of two regular multiplier Hopf algebras $A$ and $B$, Heisenberg double $\mathscr{H}$ is the smash product $A \# B$ with respect to the left regular action of $B$ on $A$. Let $\mathscr{D}=A\bowtie B$ be the Drinfel'd double, then Heisenberg double $\mathscr{H}$ is a Yetter-Drinfel'd $\mathscr{D}$-module algebra, and it is also braided commutative by the braiding of Yetter-Drinfel'd module, which generalizes the results in [10] to some infinite dimensional cases.
Let $G$ be a {\it finite group}. Consider the algebra $A$ of all complex functions on G (with pointwise product). Define a coproduct $Δ$ on A by $Δ(f)(p,q)=f(pq)$ where $f\in A$ and $p,q\in G$. Then $(A,Δ)$ is a Hopf algebra. If $G$ is only a {\it groupoid}, so that the product of two elements is not always defined, one still can consider $A$ and define $Δ(f)(p,q)$ as above when $pq$ is defined. If we let $Δ(f)(p,q)=0$ otherwise, we still get a coproduct on $A$, but $Δ(1)$ will no longer be the identity in $A\ot A$. The pair $(A,Δ)$ is not a Hopf algebra but a weak Hopf algebra. If $G$ is a {\…
A weak multiplier Hopf algebra is a pair (A,Δ) of a non-degenerate idempotent algebra A and a coproduct $Δ$ on A. The coproduct is a coassociative homomorphism from A to the multiplier algebra M(A\otimes A) with some natural extra properties (like the existence of a counit). Further we impose extra but natural conditions on the ranges and the kernels of the canonical maps T_1 and T_2 defined from A\otimes A to M(A\otimes A) by T_1(a\otimes b)=Δ(a)(1\otimes b) and T_2(a\ot b)=(a\otimes 1)Δ(b). The first condition is about the ranges of these maps. It is assumed that there exists an idempotent e…
In this paper, we generalize Majid's bicrossproduct construction. We start with a pair (A,B) of two regular multiplier Hopf algebras. We assume that B is a right A-module algebra and that A is a left B-comodule coalgebra. We recall and discuss the two notions in the first sections of the paper. The right action of A on B gives rise to the smash product A # B. The left coaction of B on A gives a possible coproduct on A # B. We will discuss in detail the necessary compatibility conditions between the action and the coaction for this to be a proper coproduct on A # B. The result is again a regula…
Let $(A,Δ)$ be a locally compact quantum group and $(A_0,Δ_0)$ a regular multiplier Hopf algebra. We show that if $(A_0,Δ_0)$ can in some sense be imbedded in $(A,Δ)$, then $A_0$ will inherit some of the analytic structure of $A$. Under certain conditions on the imbedding, we will be able to conclude that $(A_0,Δ_0)$ is actually an algebraic quantum group with a full analytic structure. The techniques used to show this, can be applied to obtain the analytic structure of a $^*$-algebraic quantum group {\it in a purely algebraic fashion}. Moreover, the {\it reason} that this analytic structure e…
In the work of Rostami et al., the Bogomolov multiplier of a Lie algebra $L$ over a field $Ω$ is defined as a particular factor of a subalgebra of the exterior product $L \wedge L$. If $L$ is finite dimensional, we identify this object as a certain subgroup of the second cohomology group $H^2(L, Ω)$ by deriving a Hopf-Type formula. As an application, we affirmatively answer two questions posed by Kunyavskii regarding the invariance of the Bogomolov multiplier under isoclinism of Lie algebras and the existence of a family of Lie algebras with Bogomolov multipliers of unbounded dimension.
Let $B$ and $C$ be non-degenerate idempotent algebras and assume that $E$ is a regular separability idempotent in $M(B\otimes C)$. Define $A=C\otimes B$ and $Δ:A\to M(A\otimes A)$ by $Δ(c\otimes b)=c\otimes E\otimes b$. The pair $(A,Δ)$ is a weak multiplier Hopf algebra. Because we assume that $E$ is regular, it is a regular weak multiplier Hopf algebra. There is a faithful left integral on $(A,Δ)$ that is also right invariant. Therefore, we call $(A,Δ)$ a unimodular algebraic quantum groupoid. By the general theory, the dual $(\widehat A,\widehat Δ)$ can be constructed and it is again an alge…
In this note, we show that Radford's formula for the fourth power of the antipode can be proven for any regular multiplier Hopf algebra with integrals (algebraic quantum groups). This of course not only includes the case of a finite-dimensional Hopf algebra but also the case of any Hopf algebra with integrals (co-Frobenius Hopf algebras). The proof follows in a few lines from well-known formulas in the theory of regular multiplier Hopf algebras with integrals. We discuss these formulas and their importance in this theory. We also mention their generalizations to the (in a certain sense) more g…
We develop a duality theory for multiplier Banach-Hopf algebras over a non-Archimedean field K. As examples, we consider algebras corresponding to discrete groups and zero-dimensional locally compact groups with K-valued Haar measure, as well as algebras of operators generated by regular representations of discrete groups.
The aim of this paper is to extend the classical Larson-Sweedler theorem, namely that a k-bialgebra has a non-singular integral (and in particular is Frobenius) if and only if it is a finite dimensional Hopf algebra, to the `many-object' setting of Hopf categories. To this end, we provide new characterizations of Frobenius V-categories and we develop the integral theory for Hopf V-categories. Our results apply to Hopf algebras in any braided monoidal category as a special case, and also relate to Turaev's Hopf group algebras and particular cases of weak and multiplier Hopf algebras.
Let $H$ be a connected Hopf algebra acting on an algebra $A$. Working over a base field having characteristic $0$, we show that for a given prime (semi-prime, completely prime) ideal $I$ of $A$, the largest $H$-stable ideal of A contained in $I$ is also prime (semi-prime, completely prime). We also prove a similar result for certain subrings of convolution algebras.
Consider two non-degenerate algebras B and C over the complex numbers. We study a certain class of idempotent elements E in the multiplier algebra of the tensor product of B with C, called separability idempotents. The conditions include the existence of non-degenerate anti-homomorphisms from B to M(C) and from C to M(B), the multiplier algebras of C and B respectively. They are called the antipodal maps. There also exist what we call distinguished linear functionals. They are unique and faithful in the regular case. The notion is more restrictive than what is generally considered in the case …
Let H be a semisimple (so, finite dimensional) Hopf algebra over an algebraically closed field k of characteristic zero and let A be a commutative domain over k. We show that if A arises as an H-module algebra via an inner faithful H-action, then H must be a group algebra. This answers a question of E. Kirkman and J. Kuzmanovich and partially answers a question of M. Cohen. The main results of this article extend to working over k of positive characteristic. On the other hand, we obtain results on Hopf actions on Weyl algebras as a consequence of the main theorem.
For finite-dimensional Hopf algebras, their classification in characteristic $0$ (e.g. over $\mathbb{C}$) has been investigated for decades with many fruitful results, but their structures in positive characteristic have remained elusive. In this paper, working over an algebraically closed field $\mathbf{k}$ of prime characteristic $p$, we introduce the concept, called Primitive Deformation, to provide a structured technique to classify certain finite-dimensional connected Hopf algebras which are almost primitively generated; that is, these connected Hopf algebras are $p^{n+1}$-dimensional, wh…
Let $A$ and $B$ be two algebraic quantum groups (i.e. multiplier Hopf algebras with integrals). Assume that $B$ is a right $A$-module algebra and that $A$ is a left $B$-comodule coalgebra. If the action and coaction are matched, it is possible to define a coproduct $Δ_#$ on the smash product $A # B$ making the pair $(A # B,Δ_#)$ into an algebraic quantum group. In this paper, we continue the study of these objects. First, we study the various data of the bicrossproduct $A # B$, such as the modular automorphisms, the modular elements, ... and obtain formulas in terms of the data of the componen…
We discuss some algebraic aspects of quantum permutation groups, working over arbitrary fields. If $K$ is any characteristic zero field, we show that there exists a universal cosemisimple Hopf algebra coacting on the diagonal algebra $K^n$: this is a refinement of Wang's universality theorem for the (compact) quantum permutation group. We also prove a structural result for Hopf algebras having a non-ergodic coaction on the diagonal algebra $K^n$, on which we determine the possible group gradings when $K$ is algebraically closed and has characteristic zero.
Coherent unit actions on a binary, quadratic operad were introduced by Loday and were shown by him to give Hopf algebra structures on the free algebras when the operad is also regular with a splitting of associativity. Working with such operads, we characterize coherent unit actions in terms of linear equations of the generators of the operads. We then use these equations to give all possible operad relations that allow such coherent unit actions. We further show that coherent unit actions are preserved under taking products and thus yield Hopf algebras on the free object of the product operad…
We identify the quantum isometry groups of spectral triples built on the symmetric groups with length functions arising from the nearest-neighbor transpositions as generators. It turns out that they are isomorphic to certain "doubling" of the group algebras of the respective symmetric groups. We discuss the doubling procedure in the context of regular multiplier Hopf algebras. In the last section we study the dependence of the isometry group of S_n on the choice of generators in the case n=3. We show that two different choices of generators lead to non-isomorphic quantum isometry groups which …
Poincare-Birkhoff-Witt (PBW) Theorems have attracted significant attention since the work of Drinfeld (1986), Lusztig (1989), and Etingof-Ginzburg (2002) on deformations of skew group algebras $H \ltimes {\rm Sym}(V)$, as well as for other cocommutative Hopf algebras $H$. In this paper we show that such PBW theorems do not require the full Hopf algebra structure, by working in the more general setting of a "cocommutative algebra", which involves a coproduct but not a counit or antipode. Special cases include infinitesimal Hecke algebras, as well as symplectic reflection algebras, rational Cher…
