Using a large sample of 26623 quasars with redshifts in the range $1.5 \le z\le 5.1$ with \civ $λ$1549 Åemission line in Fifth Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), we investigate the cosmological evolution of the Baldwin Effect, i.e. the relation between the equivalent width (EW) of the \civ emission line and continuum luminosity. We confirm the earlier result that there exists a strong correlation between the \civ EW and the continuum luminosity, and we find that, up to $z\approx 5$, the slope of the Baldwin Effect seems to have no effect of cosmological evolution. A sub-sample of 13960 quasars with broad \civ $λ$1549 Åemission line from SDSS is used to explore the origin of the Baldwin Effect. We find that \civ EW have a strong correlation with the mass of supermassive black hole (SMBH), and a weak correlation with the Eddington ratio, $\lb/\ledd$. This suggests that the SMBH mass is probably the primary drive for the Baldwin Effect.
The relationship between the emission-line equivalent width and the continuum luminosity, so called the Baldwin effect, plays an important role in studying the physics of the broad line region of AGNs. Using the archived ultraviolet spectra obtained by IUE, HST, and HUT in 1978-2002, we investigated the intrinsic CIV Baldwin effect of a well-studied Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4151. Both its continuum flux and CIV emission-line flux varied about two orders of magnitude in more than two decades, making it one of the best targets for studying the slope variation of the Baldwin effect. We fitted the CIV…
We present composite UV spectra for low redshift Type 1 AGN binned to exploit the information content of the Eigenvector 1 (E1) parameter space. Composite spectra allow a decomposition of the CIV1549 line profile - one of the strongest high-ionization lines. The simplest CIV decomposition into narrow (NLR), broad (BLR) and very broad (VBLR) components suggests that different components have an analog in Hb with two major exceptions. VBLR emission is seen only in population B (FWHM(Hb)>4000 km/s) sources. A blue shifted/asymmetric BLR component is seen only in pop. A (FWHM(Hb)<4000 km/s) HIL su…
New measurements of the z~6 intergalactic CIV abundance are presented, using moderate resolution IR spectra of two QSOs taken with GNIRS on Gemini South. These data were systematically searched for high redshift CIV absorption lines, using objective selection criteria. Comprehensive tests were performed to quantify sample incompleteness, as well as the rate of false positive CIV identifications. The trend of constant $Ω_{CIV}(z)$ observed at z~2-5 appears to continue to z~6, the highest observed redshift. The CIV sample is also consistent with the redshift-invariant form of the CIV column dens…
We present a statistical analysis of the associated, high ionization narrow absorption line (NAL) systems in a sample of 59 QSOs defined from the HST QSO Absorption Line Key Project. We have compiled the QSO luminosities at 2500 A, 5 GHz, and 2 keV, spectral indices at 2500 A and 5 GHz, the H-beta emission line FWHM, the CIV emission line FWHM, and the radio core fraction. We find 17 associated NALs toward 15 QSOs, of which ~10 are statistically expected to be intrinsic. From a multivariate clustering analysis, the QSOs seem to group together based primarily on radio luminosity, followed by ra…
A unique set of UV-optical spectrograms of 22 low redshift QSOs are investigated using principal component analysis. We find three significant principal components over the broad wavelength range from Lyαto Hα. They together account for about 78% of the sample intrinsic variance. We present strong arguments that the first principal component represents the Baldwin effect, relating equivalent widths to the luminosity (i.e. accretion rate), but only emission-line cores are involved. The second component represents continuum variations, probably dominated by intrinsic reddening. The third princip…
Recent studies of QSOs with ROSAT suggest the existence of a significant population of Soft X-ray Weak QSOs (SXW QSOs) where the soft X-ray flux is ~ 10-30 times smaller than in typical QSOs. As a first step in a systematic study of these objects, we establish a well-defined sample of SXW QSOs which includes all alpha_ox<=-2 QSOs from the Boroson & Green (1992) sample of 87 BQS QSOs. SXW QSOs comprise about 11% of this optically selected QSO sample. From an analysis of CIV absorption in the 55 BG92 QSOs with available CIV data, we find a remarkably strong correlation between alpha_ox and the C…
We suggest that the Baldwin Effect is a result of the spectral dependence of the line-driving ionizing continuum on the black hole mass. We derive a relationship between the mass of the central black hole and the broad emission line luminosity in active galactic nuclei (AGN). Assuming the UV spectrum of AGN is emitted from an optically thick medium we find an expression for the characteristic energy of the ``UV bump'' in terms of the observable luminosity and emission-line width. We show empirically and analytically that the bump energy is anti-correlated with the black-hole mass and with the …
Moderate resolution spectra have been recorded for a sample of radio-selected QSOs (z=2.5) discovered in the ``Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty centimeters'' (FIRST) VLA survey. This work is motivated by the study of a heterogeneous set of QSO absorption line spectra that showed that as many as 36% of the absorbers normally thought to be intergalactic are correlated with physical properties of the background QSO, including the radio source spectral index. Spectra were taken for 24 newly discovered quasars in order to test this finding on a more homogeneous data set. The spectra have bee…
Quasar emission lines are sensitive to both the luminosity and shape of the quasars' high energy continuum - primarily in the soft X-ray and the (obscured) extreme ultraviolet. We initiate the first large-scale, multi-line investigation of correlations between the QSO soft X-ray continuum and UV line emission, using an IUE/Einstein sample. We characterize the distributions of line equivalent and velocity widths (EW and FWHM) of 85 QSOs in the IUE atlas of Lanzetta et al. (1993), using a new error analysis for objective, automated line measurements, and contrast measured line parameters to the …
We attempt to characterize the geometry of Broad Absorption Line (BAL) QSOs by studying a low redshift sample of 12 sources. We find that the majority of these sources are Population A quasars as defined in (broad H-beta FWHM > 4000 kms/s; Sulenticet al 2000). A possible correlation between terminal velocity and absolute V magnitude suggests that the bolometric luminosity to black hole mass ratio \lm is a governing factor with classical BAL sources showing the highest values. CIV 1549 emission in classical BAL sources shows a profile blueshift that supports a disk wind/outflow scenario with a …
We present a catalog of 5039 broad absorption line (BAL) quasars (QSOs) in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 5 (DR5) QSO catalog that have absorption troughs covering a continuous velocity range >= 2000 km/s. We have fit ultraviolet (UV) continua and line emission in each case, enabling us to report common diagnostics of BAL strengths and velocities in the range -25,000 to 0 km/s for SiIV $λ$1400, CIV $λ$1549, AlIII $λ$1857, and MgII $λ$2799. We calculate these diagnostics using the spectrum listed in the DR5 QSO catalog, and also for spectra from additional SDSS observing epoch…
Observations of absorption systems in close, multiple lines of sight to gravitationally lensed QSOs can be used to infer the density fluctuations and motions of the gas clouds giving rise to the Lyman alpha forest phenomenon and to QSO metal absorption lines. We describe a survey of lensed QSOs with the Keck HIRES instrument and argue that one can derive limits on the frequency and importance of hydrodynamical disturbances inflicted by galaxies on the surrounding gas from such data. We discuss differences between the kinematic properties of low density unsaturated Lyman alpha forest absorption…
We present a direct measurement of the metallicity distribution function for the high redshift intergalactic medium. We determine the shape of this function using survival statistics, which account for both detections and non-detections of OVI and CIV associated with HI absorption in quasar spectra. Our OVI sample probes the metal content of ~50% of all baryons at z~2.5. We find a median intergalactic abundance of [O,C/H]=-2.82; the differential abundance distribution is approximately lognormal with mean <[C,O/H]>~-2.85 and σ=0.75 dex. Some 60-70% the Lya forest lines are enriched to observabl…
We analyze archived Chandra and XMM-Newton X-ray observations of 536 Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 5 (DR5) quasars (QSOs) at 1.7 <= z <= 2.7 in order to characterize the relative UV and X-ray spectral properties of QSOs that do not have broad UV absorption lines (BALs). We constrain the fraction of X-ray weak, non-BAL QSOs and find that such objects are rare; for example, sources underluminous by a factor of 10 comprise $\la$2% of optically-selected SDSS QSOs. X-ray luminosities vary with respect to UV emission by a factor of $\la$2 over several years for most sources. UV contin…
We present a sample of 47 confirmed and 14 candidate Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) discovered in the Canadian Network for Observational Cosmology field galaxy redshift survey (CNOC2). The sample consists of 38 objects identified from broad emission lines, 8 from narrow [NeV] emission, and 15 candidates from FeII or MgII absorption lines, one of which has been confirmed as a broad-line AGN via infrared spectroscopy. Redshifts of these AGN range from z=0.27 to z=4.67, and the average absolute magnitude is M_B=-22.25. No color selection criteria were involved in selecting this spectroscopically di…
We present the results of a study of QSO Absorption Line Systems (QSOALSs) with respect to intrinsic QSO properties using an updated catalog of data in the literature. We have searched the literature for 6 and 20 cm radio flux densities and have studied 20 cm maps from the FIRST VLA Survey in order to compare the absorption properties with radio luminosity, radio spectral index and radio morphology. This work focuses particularly on the nature of CIV QSOALSs and their distribution in velocity space in light of intrinsic QSO properties. We find that the distribution of narrow, CIV absorption sy…
We present preliminary results of a systematic analysis of the XMM-Newton spectra of nearby optically-bright QSOs. The objects have been optically selected from the Bright Quasar Survey sample. The goal of this project is to characterise the X-ray spectral properties of optically selected QSOs in the 0.3-12 keV energy band. A power law component accounts the hard band spectra with a average photon index of 2.0+/-0.2. No single model is able to account for the ubiquitous soft excess. We discuss several possibilities such single and multi-temperature black-body, power law and bremsstrahlung. We …
The heavy elements near QSOs provide unique measures of the star formation and chemical evolution in young galactic nuclei or pre-galactic condensations. Studies of quasar abundances also naturally address a variety of questions regarding the physics of QSO environments, including the Baldwin Effect emphasized at this meeting. Here I review the status of quasar abundance work.
We present results of searching for the possible typical scales in the spatial distribution of QSOs. Our method is based on the second derivative of the two-point correlation function. This statistic is sensitive to the scale of the maximum in the spectrum $P(k)$ of the density perturbation in the universe. This maximum or bend scale can be detected as the wavelengths of the periodic component in the second derivative of the integral correlation function. For various QSO samples compiled from surveys of pencil-beam and bright QSOs, a typical scale of about 93 $\pm$ 10 h$^{-1}$Mpc for $q_0=0.5$…
XMM-Newton observations of 29 high redshift (z>2) quasars, including seven radio-quiet, 16 radio-loud and six Broad Absorption Line (BAL) objects, are presented; due to the high redshifts, the rest-frame energy bands extend up to \~30-70 keV. Over 2-10 keV, the quasars can be well fitted in each case by a simple power-law, with no strong evidence for iron emission lines. The lack of iron lines is in agreement both with dilution by the radio jet emission (for the radio-loud quasars) and the X-ray Baldwin effect. No Compton reflection humps at higher energies (i.e., above 10 keV in the rest fram…
We report the near-IR detection of a prominent CIV absorption in the rest-frame UV spectrum of the most distant known QSO, SDSS J104433.04-012502.2, at z=5.80. This QSO was recently observed with XMM-Newton and it was found to be notably X-ray weak. The equivalent width of the CIV absorption feature (~10 A) strongly supports the idea that the X-ray faintness of this QSO is due to heavy absorption by gas with a column density N_H > 10^{24} cm^-2. The shape of the CIV feature suggests that this is a Broad Absorption Line QSO. Although absorbed by a huge column of gas, the observed continuum in t…
Using a sample of 3814 quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, we confirm that high-ionization, broad, emission lines such as CIV are significantly blueshifted with respect to low-ionization, broad, emission lines such as MgII. CIV emission line peaks have a range of shifts from a redshift of 500 km/s to blueshifts well in excess of 2000 km/s as compared to MgII. We confirm previous results that suggest an anti-correlation between the shift of the CIV emission line peak and the rest equivalent width of the CIV emission line. Furthermore, using composite spectra, we are able to show that the…
We contrast measurements of composite optical and ultraviolet (UV) spectra constructed from samples of QSOs defined by their soft X-ray brightness. X-ray bright (XB) composites show stronger emission lines in general, but particularly from the narrow line region. The difference in the [OIII]/Hbeta ratio is particularly striking, and even more so when blended FeII emission is properly subtracted. The correlation of this ratio with X-ray brightness were principal components of QSO spectral diversity found by Boroson & Green (1992). We find here that other, much weaker narrow optical forbidden li…
We report on the analysis of the photometric and spectroscopic properties of a sample of 29 low redshift (z<0.6) QSOs for which both HST WFPC2 images and ultraviolet HST FOS spectra are available. For each object we measure the R band absolute magnitude of the host galaxy, the CIV (1550A) line width and the 1350A continuum luminosity. From these quantities we can estimate the black hole (BH) mass through the M(BH)-L(bulge) relation for inactive galaxies, and from the virial method based on the kinematics of the regions emitting the broad lines. The comparison of the masses derived from the two…
We present results of a program of high signal-to-noise spectroscopy for 44 QSOs at redshifts > 4 using the MMT and Keck observatories. The quasar spectra cover 1100 -- 1700 A in the rest frame for sources spanning a luminosity range of approximately 2 orders of magnitude. Comparisons between these data and spectra of lower redshift quasars reveal a high degree of similarity, although differences are present in the profiles and the strengths of some emission features. An examination of the luminosity dependence of the emission lines reveals evidence for a weak or absent Baldwin effect among z …
Faint quasar surveys are necessary complements to bright quasar surveys to remove the degeneracy between redshift and luminosity inherent in any single magnitude-limited sample. I discuss two ongoing surveys for faint quasars at 3.3<z<5 and 5<z<6 using imaging data from the Big Throughput Camera on the CTIO 4m. I also discuss a sample of faint spectroscopically selected AGN with z<4.7 found serendipitously in the CNOC2 Field Galaxy Redshift Survey. Faint quasars at 2<z<3.5 from this sample, when combined with literature data on more luminous quasars at the same redshift, show evidence for a mu…
Measuring the response of the intergalactic medium to a blast of ionizing radiation allows one to infer the physical properties of the medium and, in principle, the lifetime and isotropy of the radiating source. The most sensitive such measurements can be made if the source of radiation is near the line of sight to a bright background QSO. We present results based on deep Keck/HIRES observations of the QSO triplet KP76, KP77 and KP78 at z ~2.5, with separations of 2-3 arcmin on the plane of the sky. Using accurate systemic redshifts of the QSOs from near-IR spectroscopy, we quantify the state …
In Keck HIRES spectra of 9 QSOs we identify a sample of 908 CIV absorber components in 188 systems outside the Lyman forest in the redshift range 1.6 < z < 4.4, with related lines of SiIV, CII, SiII and NV. The properties of the CIV absorbers are almost constant with z. We find a mild increase in Omega(CIV) with decreasing z with a mean = (3.8+/-0.7)*10^(-8) (spatially flat LCDM cosmology and h = 0.71). Using Omega(b) from the CMB and ionization fractions from our data we obtain [C/H]_(z = 4.0) >/= -3.11(+0.14/-0.19) and [C/H]_(z = 2.1) >/= -2.64(+0.15/-0.22), suggesting a rise by about a fact…
We report the results of statistical tests performed on a sample of 139 broad absorption line (BAL) QSOs with good quality optical spectra and/or optical polarization data. Correlations between optical indices and the polarization degree p_0 are systematically searched for. In order to identify the most important correlations, we perform a principal component analysis with a sample of 30 BAL QSOs and eight quantities (including p_0). Most of the variance in the data is contained in two principal components (PC): PC1 is mainly dominated by the correlation between the balnicity index BI and the …
A variety of investigations have demonstrated commonalities between the Baldwin (1977) Effect, the blueshifting of CIV emission lines (e.g., Gaskell 1982; Richards et al. 2002), and the L_UV-L_X relationship (e.g., Avni & Tananbaum 1982; Strateva et al. 2005; Steffen et al. 2006); indeed all three of these observational effects may be manifestations of the same underlying (but still uncertain) physics. This commonality is of interest to investigations of accretion disk winds (e.g., Murray et al. 1995; Proga et al. 2000) from active galactic nuclei (AGN) as there is evidence that broad absorpti…
We investigate the relation between the mass of super-massive black holes (Mbh) in QSOs and the mass of the dark matter halos hosting them (Mdh). We measure the widths of broad emission lines (Mgii lambda 2798, Civ lambda 1549) from QSO composite spectra as a function of redshift. These widths are then used to determine virial black hole mass estimates. We compare our virial black hole mass estimates to dark matter halo masses for QSO hosts derived by Croom et al. (2005) based on measurements of QSO clustering. This enables us to trace the Mbh-Mdh relation over the redshift range z=0.5 to 2.5.…
Using our photoionization code CIRRUS, we show that the study of proximity effect on metal elements provides a possibility of placing constraints on the spectral shape of the metagalactic UV background (MUVB). From theoretical point of view, the most optimum indicator of the spectral shape of the MUVB is the ratio OIV/OIII. Unlike previous thought, the ratio SiIV/CIV is not a good indicator of the spectral shape because of its strong dependence on an ionization parameter as well. We also find that the observed excess of CIV systems in luminous QSOs may be a photoionization effect, but not a gr…
We present optical spectra and redshift measurements for 178 flat-spectrum objects from the Parkes quarter-Jansky flat-spectrum sample. These spectra were obtained in order to compile a complete sample of quasars for use in a study of quasar evolution. We present a composite optical spectrum made from the subset of 109 quasars that have flux densities in the range 0.25Jy < S(2.7GHz)< 0.5Jy, and make a comparison with a composite for radio-quiet QSOs from the Large Bright Quasar Survey. Our large sample of radio-loud quasars allows us to strengthen previous reports that the Ly-alpha and CIV emi…
Absorption-line spectroscopy of 23 background QSOs and numerous background galaxies has let us measure the spatial distribution of metals and neutral hydrogen around 1044 UV-selected galaxies at redshifts 1.8<z<3.3. The typical galaxy is surrounded to radii r~40 proper kpc by gas that has a large velocity spread (dv>260 km/s) and produces very strong absorption lines (N_CIV >> 10^14 cm^-2) in the spectra of background objects. Absorption with an average column density of N_CIV ~ 10^14 cm^-2 extends to 80 kpc, a radius large enough to imply that most strong intergalactic CIV absorption is assoc…
Recent works showed that the absorbing material in broad absorption line (BAL) quasars is optically thick to major resonant absorption lines. This material may contribute significantly to the polarization in the absorption lines. In this paper, we present a detailed study of the resonant line scattering process using Monte-Carlo method to constrain the optical depth, the geometry and the kinematics of BAL Region (BALR). By comparing our results with observed polarized spectra of BAL quasars, we find: (1) Resonant scattering can produce polarization up to 9% at the absorption trough for doublet…
We have searched the broad-absorption-line quasar (BAL QSO) sample presented by Reichard et al. for objects exhibiting the so-called `ghost of Lyman alpha'. This ghost manifests as a hump near -5900kms in the troughs of the broad absorption lines and provides strong evidence for the importance of line-driving in powering the outflows from BAL QSOs. Of the 224 sample BAL QSOs selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Early Data Release (EDR), 198 satisfy our redshift constraints and 58 show clear evidence of multiple-trough (MT) structure in the CIV line. A composite spectrum constructe…
The properties of the fluorescence Fe K-alpha emission lines of a sample of 38 quasars (QSOs) observed with XMM-Newton are studied. These objects are included in the optically selected sample from the Palomar-Green (PG) Bright Quasar Survey with an X-ray luminosity 1.3E43<L(2-10 keV)<5.1E45 ergs/s and z<1.72. For each object in the sample, we investigated the presence of both narrow and broad iron lines in detail. A total of 20 out of the 38 QSOs show evidence of an Fe K-alpha emission line with a narrow profile. The majority of the lines are consistent with an origin in low ionization materia…
Chandra and XMM surveys show that the fraction of obscured AGN decreases rapidly with increasing luminosity. Although this is usually explained by assuming that the covering factor of the central engine is much smaller at luminous QSOs, the exact origin of this effect remains unknown. We perform toy simulations to test whether photo-ionisation of the obscuring screen in the presence of a strong radiation field can reproduce this effect. In particular, we create X-ray spectral simulations using a warm absorber model assuming a range of input column densities and ionization parameters. We fit in…
We present results of the first survey of high-redshift (<z> ~ 2.3) OVI absorption systems along parallel lines of sight toward two lensed QSOs. After a careful and well-defined search, we find ten intervening OVI systems. Within the errors, all OVI systems appear at the same redshift and have similar line strengths in front of both QSO images, whereas in most cases CIV or SiIV show more differences across the lines of sight, either in radial velocity or line strength. We conclude that (1) the coherence length of OVI must be much larger than ~ 1 kpc, and (2) an important fraction of the CIV ab…
We have used composite spectra generated from more than 22000 QSOs observed in the course of the 2dF and 6dF QSO Redshift Surveys to investigate the relationship between the velocity width of emission lines and QSO luminosity. We find that the velocity width of the broad emission lines Hbeta, Hgamma, MgII, CIII] and CIV are correlated with the continuum luminosity, with a significance of more than 99 per cent. Of the major narrow emission lines ([OIII] 5007, [OII] 3727, NeIII 3870 and NeV 3426) only [OIII] exhibits a significant correlation between line width and luminosity. Assuming that the …
We have generated a series of composite QSO spectra using over 22000 individual low resolution (~8A) QSO spectra obtained from the 2dF (18.25<bj<20.85) and 6dF (16<bj<18.25) QSO Redshift Surveys. The large size of the catalogue has enabled us to construct composite spectra in narrow redshift (dz=0.25) and absolute magnitude (dMb=0.5) bins. The median number of QSOs in each composite is ~200, yielding typical S/N of ~100. For a given redshift interval, the composite spectra cover a factor of over 25 in luminosity. Using the composite spectra we have measured the equivalent widths (EWs) of the m…
We use quantitative metrics to characterize the variation of CIV 1549 A broad absorption lines (BALs) over 3--6 (rest-frame) years in a sample of 13 quasars at 1.7 <= z <= 2.8 and compare the results to previous studies of BAL variability on shorter time scales. The strong BALs in our study change in complex ways over 3--6 yr. Variation occurs in discrete regions which are only a few thousand km/s wide, and the distribution of the change in absorption equivalent width broadens over time. We constrain the typical CIV BAL lifetime to be at least a few decades. While we do not find evidence to su…
Recent observations of Broad Absorption Line (BAL) quasars demonstrated that the soft X-ray emission of these objects is extremely weak and convincing evidence for very strong absorption by a high column density (~ 10^23.5 cm^-2) was obtained for PG 1411+442, even though it is one of the few BAL QSOs strongly detected in soft X-rays. This paper examines the ionization status and geometry of the X-ray absorber by combining the properties of the UV lines with the X-ray continuum absorption. We show that the gas has to have large column densities in ions of major UV absorption lines, such as CIV,…
NeVIII 774 is an important tracer of the high-ionization gas in QSOs. We examine the NeVIII emission-line properties using new HST-FOS spectra of four sources, mean spectra derived from two QSO samples in the HST archives, and new photoionization calculations. The results support our previous claim that broad NeVIIIlines are common in QSOs, with an average flux of ~42% of OVI 1034 and velocity widths that are ~2 to 5 times larger than OVI, CIV 1549 and other broad lines in the same spectra. The strongest and most reliably measured NeVIII 774 lines (in two sources) have FWHM ~ 14,500 km/s. Line…
The APM multicolor survey for bright z > 4 objects, covering 2500 deg^2 of sky to m(R)~19, resulted in the discovery of thirty-one quasars with z > 4. High signal-to-noise optical spectrophotometry at 5A resolution has been obtained for the twenty-eight quasars easily accessible from the northern hemisphere. These spectra have been surveyed to create new samples of high redshift Lyman-limit systems, damped Lyman-alpha absorbers, and metal absorption systems (e.g. CIV and MgII). In this paper we present the spectra, together with line lists of the detected absorption systems. The QSOs display a…
