We present 1420 MHz polarization images of a 2.5 X 2.5 degree region around the planetary nebula (PN) Sh 2-216. The images are taken from the Canadian Galactic Plane Survey (CGPS). An arc of low polarized intensity appears prominently in the north-east portion of the visible disk of Sh 2-216, coincident with the optically identified interaction region between the PN and the interstellar medium (ISM). The arc contains structural variations down to the ~1 arcminute resolution limit in both polarized intensity and polarization angle. Several polarization-angle "knots" appear along the arc. By comparison of the polarization angles at the centers of the knots and the mean polarization angle outside Sh 2-216, we estimate the rotation measure (RM) through the knots to be -43 +/- 10 rad/m^2. Using this estimate for the RM and an estimate of the electron density in the shell of Sh 2-216, we derive a line-of-sight magnetic field in the interaction region of 5.0 +/- 2.0 microG. We believe it more likely the observed magnetic field is interstellar than stellar, though we cannot completely dismiss the latter possibility. We interpret our observations via a simple model which describes the ISM magnetic field around Sh 2-216, and comment on the potential use of old PNe as probes of the magnetized ISM.
The theory of the interaction of planetary nebulae with the interstellar medium is important for the interpretation of nebular morphologies that deviate from point symmetry. It can be used to probe the interstellar medium and its magnetic field. We emphasize in this review the role of hydrodynamical instabilities in the interaction.
Magnetohydrodynamical simulations are presented of a magnetized pulsar wind interacting directly with the interstellar medium, or, in the case of a surrounding supernova remnant, with the associated freely expanding ejecta of the progenitor star. In both cases the simulations show that the pulsar wind nebula will be elongated due to the dynamical influence of the toroidal magnetic fields, which confirm predictions from a semi-analytical model presented by Begelman & Li. The simulations follow the expansion of the pulsar wind nebula when the latter is bounded by a strong shock and show that the…
Interstellar medium is turbulent and this induces relative motions of dust grains. We calculate relative velocities of charged grains in a partially ionized magnetized gas. We account for anisotropy of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence, grain coupling with magnetic field, and the turbulence cutoff arising from the ambipolar drag. We obtain grain velocities for turbulence with parameters consistent with those in HI and dark clouds. Those velocities are smaller than those in earlier papers, where MHD effects were disregarded. Finally, we compare grain velocities arising from photoelectric emi…
We report the detection of an Halpha emission-line structure in the upstream side of the planetary nebula NGC 40, which is predicted by numerical simulations, and which is attributed to Rayleigh-Taylor instability. Such a Rayleigh-Taylor instability is expected to occur at early stages of the interaction process between the interstellar medium (ISM) and a fast moving planetary nebula, as is the case for NGC 40. We resolved the Rayleigh-Taylor instability `tongues', as well as the flatness of the nebula around the `tongues', which results from the deceleration by the ISM.
The interaction of the ISM with the evolution of PNe is studied for cases where there is a large relative velocity between ISM and central star, for example for high-proper motion PNe. In such cases the ISM wind already interacts strongly with the AGB wind, and extensive PN asymmetries result.
This work investigates the propagation of magnetized, isolated old neutron stars through the interstellar medium. We performed axisymmetric non relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of the propagation of a non-rotating star with dipole magnetic field aligned with its velocity through the interstellar medium (ISM). Effects of rotation will be discussed in a subsequent work. We consider two cases: (1) where theaccretion radius $R_{acc}$ is comparable to the magnetic standoff distance or Alfvén radius $R_A$ and gravitational focusing is important; and (2) where $R_{acc}<< R_A$ and th…
We present the first results of a systematic search for Diffuse Interstellar Bands in a carefully selected sample of post-AGB stars observed with high resolution optical spectroscopy. These stars are shown to be ideal targets to study this old, intriguing astrophysical problem. Our results suggest that the carrier(s) of these bands may not be present in the circumstellar environments of these evolved stars. The implications of the results obtained on the identification of the still unknown carrier(s) are discussed.
This review summarizes the argument for molecular clouds being dominated by turbulence, most likely super-Alfvenic turbulence. Five lines of observational evidence are given: molecular linewidths and line shapes, nonequilibrium chemical abundances, fractal cloud shapes, measurements of the dispersion of dust extinction through clouds, and Zeeman measurements of the field strength. Recent models by Padoan & Nordlund are summarized, that show that super-Alfvenic turbulence appears consistent with these observations. I then present recent computations of my own, with numerical resolution as high …
The HI environment of the Crab Nebula is investigated using 2.75' and 9' resolution data from (respectively) the DRAO Synthesis, and Effelsberg 100 m, radio telescopes. No clear evidence for an interaction between the Crab and the surrounding HI is found; the Crab probably lies within the boundaries of a large scale, low-density void in the HI distribution. The presence of a wind-blown HI bubble near the Crab is confirmed, and it is suggested that the unidentified star which powers this bubble is responsible for the stellar wind material detected along the line of sight towards the Crab.
Observations have suggested substantial departures from pressure equilibrium in the interstellar medium (ISM) in the plane of the Galaxy, even on scales under 50 pc. Nevertheless, multi-phase models of the ISM assume at least locally isobaric gas. The pressure then determines the density reached by gas cooling to stable thermal equilibrium. We use numerical models of the magnetized ISM to examine the consequences of supernova driving for interstellar pressures. In this paper we examine a (200 pc)^3 periodic domain threaded by magnetic fields. Individual parcels of gas at different pressures re…
The evolution of supernova remnants (SNRs) is studied, with particular attention to the effect of magnetic fields with axisymmetric two-dimensional magnetohydrodynamical simulations. The evolution of magnetic SNRs is the same as non-magnetic ones in the adiabatic Sedov stage. After a thin shell is formed, the shell is driven by the pressure of the hot interior gas (bubble). Evolution in the pressure-driven snow-plow phase is much affected by the magnetic field. The shell sweeping the magnetic field lines thickens owing to the magnetic pressure force. After $5\times 10^5{\rm yr}$ - $2\times 10^…
We present a detailed kinematical analysis of two selected nebulae in the Local Group irregular galaxy IC 1613. The nebulae are: S8, the only known supernova remnant in this galaxy, and S3, a Wolf-Rayet nebula associated with the only WO star in this galaxy. For S8, we have obtained and analyzed its radial velocity field, where we found complex profiles which can be fitted by several velocity components. These profiles also show the presence of high velocity, low density gas. From this, we have obtained the expansion velocity, estimated the preshock density and calculated the basic kinematical…
Sh 2-188 is an example of strong interaction between a planetary nebula (PN) and the interstellar medium (ISM). Its structure is postulated to be the result of motion through the ISM. We present new H$α$ images from the Isaac Newton Telescope Photometric H$α$ Survey of the Northern Galactic Plane which reveal new structure. The nebula extends 15 arcmin on the sky in total. We have developed a `triple-wind' hydrodynamical model, comprising of the initial `slow' asymptotic giant branch (AGB) wind and the later `fast' stellar wind plus a third wind reflecting the motion through the ISM. Simulatio…
With the High Resolution Spectrograph aboard the Hubble Space Telescope we obtained high signal-to-noise (S/N > 200 - 600 per 17 km/s resolution element) spectra of narrow absorption lines toward the Wolf-Rayet star HD 50896. The ring nebula S308 that surrounds this star is thought to be caused by a pressure-driven bubble bounded by circumstellar gas (most likely from a red supergiant or luminous blue variable progenitor) pushed aside by a strong stellar wind. Our observation has shown for the first time that blueshifted (approximately 70 km/s relative to the star) absorption components of C I…
We present here the 7.0-8.7 micron spectrum of the bright reflection nebula NGC 7023. Our observations are made with the Short Wavelength Spectrometer (SWS) on the European satellite Infrared Space Observatory (ISO). The vibrational bands of the ionized fullerene C60+ are expected at 7.11 and 7.51 microns, while those of the neutral fullerene C60 are expected at 7.0 and 8.45 microns. We estimate an upper limit in NGC 7023 for the C60+ abundance of <0.26% of the interstellar abundance of carbon, while C60 contains <0.27% of interstellar carbon.
Several topics in the theory of magnetized turbulence are reviewed with application to star formation and the interstellar medium. The density, pressure, and temperature distribution in a turbulent interstellar medium is described in comparison to a medium dominated by thermal instability. The derivation of the empirical theory for the energy spectrum of hydrodynamic and MHD turbulence is outlined, and comparisons are given to numerical models for the magnetized case. Next discussed is how density fluctuations modify observations of velocity fluctuations in line centroids, coincidentally cance…
Interaction with the Interstellar Medium (ISM) cannot be ignored in understanding planetary nebula (PN) evolution and shaping. In an effort to understand the range of shapes observed in the outer envelopes of PNe, we have run a comprehensive set of three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations, from the beginning of the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) superwind phase until the end of the post--AGB/PN phase. A 'triple-wind' model is used, including a slow AGB wind, fast post--AGB wind and third wind reflecting the linear movement through the ISM. A wide range of stellar velocities, mass-loss rates a…
The importance of the interstellar magnetic field is studied in relation to the evolutions of superbubbles with a three-dimensional (3D) numerical magnetohydrodynamical (MHD) simulation. A superbubble is a large supernova remnant driven by sequential supernova explosions in an OB association. Its evolution is affected by the density stratification in the galactic disk. After the size reaches 2--3 times the density scale-height, the superbubble expands preferentially in the $z$-direction. Finally it can punch out the gas disk (blow-out). On the other hand, the magnetic field running parallel to…
SS433 is a jet emitting X-ray binary surrounded by the W50 radio nebula. The SS433/W50 system is an excellent laboratory for studying relativistic jet interaction with the surrounding interstellar medium. In this context, part of the W50 nebula has been mapped with ISOCAM at 15 micron. I will show the results particularly on the W50 west lobe, and on 2 emitting zones detected with IRAS who have also been observed in millimetre wavelength (CO(1-0) transition), and for one of them by spectroscopy with ISOLWS and ISOSWS between 2 and 200 micron.
We analyze the distribution of the interstellar matter in the environs of the Wolf-Rayet star LSS3982 (= WR85, WN6+OB?) linked to the optical ring nebula RCW118. Our study is based on neutral hydrogen 21cm-line data belonging to the Southern Galactic Plane Survey (SGPS). The analysis of the HI data allowed the identification of a neutral hydrogen interstellar bubble related to WR 85 and the 25' diameter ring nebula RCW118. The HI bubble was detected at a systemic velocity of -21.5 km/s, corresponding to a kinematical distance of 2.8+/-1.1 kpc, compatible with the stellar distance. The neutral …
A new theory is presented for the development of circular polarization as radio waves propagate through the turbulent, birefringent interstellar medium. The fourth order moments of the wavefield are calculated and it is shown that unpolarized incident radiation develops a nonzero variance in circular polarization. A magnetized turbulent medium causes the Stokes parameters to scintillate in a non-identical manner. A specific model for this effect is developed for the case of density fluctuations in a uniform magnetic field.
The dynamics of relativistic magnetized mass loaded outflows carrying toroidal magnetic field is analyzed in the context of Pulsar Wind Nebulae (PWNs). Mass loading is very efficient in slowing down super-relativistic magnetized flows and weakening of relativistic shocks. We suggest that weakening of relativistic reverse shocks by mass loading in PWNs is responsible for the low radiative efficiencies of the majority of the PWNs. Mass loading may also result in a shock transition near the fast magnetosonic point; this is unlikely to happen in majority of PWNs. The evolution of magnetized mass l…
We have detected an ionized nebula around the hot DO white dwarf KPD 0005+5106, and used the [OIII]/H-alpha ratios and nebular velocities to separate this nebula from the background HII region of AO Cas. The angular size of the [OIII] nebula of KPD 0005+5106 is ~3 deg. The velocity of this nebula is similar to those of the local interstellar HI gas and the interstellar/circumstellar absorption lines in UV spectra of KPD 0005+5106, but has a large offset from those of the stellar photospheric lines. The mass of the ionized nebula, ~70 Msun, indicates that it consists of interstellar material an…
The interaction of the wind from a pulsar (or more generally from a star) with t he amb ient medium gives rise to the formation of a bow-shock nebula. We present a mode l of adiabatic bow-shock nebulae, including the presence of a neutral component in the interstellar medium. As demonstrated in a previous paper (Bucciantini & Bandiera 2001}, hereafter Paper I), the velocity and the luminosity of the pulsar, as well a s the characteristics of the interstellar medium (ISM), play an essential role in determinin g the properties of bow shock nebulae. In particular, the Balmer emission is strongly …
We investigate the morphology and kinematics of the interstellar medium in the environs of the open cluster Mrk50, which includes the Wolf-Rayet star WR157 and a number of early B-type stars. The analysis was performed using radio continuum images at 408 and 1420 MHz, and HI 21cm line data taken from the Canadian Galactic Plane Survey, molecular observations of the 12CO (J=1-0) line at 115 GHz from the Five College Radio Astronomy Observatory and available mid and far IR observations obtained with the MSX and IRAS satellites, respectively. This study allowed identification of the radio continu…
(abridged) NGC 1569 is an ideal test environment to understand the impact of "feedback" from massive stars on the surrounding ISM. We present HST WFPC2 narrowband imagery of NGC 1569 in an attempt to understand the underlying ionizing emission mechanisms on a 3 pc scale and to generate a H II region size distribution and luminosity function. We use [O III]/Hbeta and [S II]/Halpha ratio maps to find that non-photoionizing mechanisms (e.g. shocks) are responsible for 10%+/-3% of the Halpha emission, 2.3-3.3 times larger than results from similar galaxies. Our results for NGC 1569 indicate that t…
SS433 is an X-ray binary emitting persistent relativistic double sided jets that expand into the surrounding W50 radio nebula. The SS433/W50 system is then an excellent laboratory for studying relativistic jet interaction with the surrounding interstellar medium. In this context, part of W50 nebula has been mapped with ISOCAM at 15 micron, where the large scale X-ray jets are observed. I will show the results, particularly on the W50 western lobe, on two emitting regions detected in IR with IRAS, and observed in millimeter wavelength (CO(1-0) transition). It is uncertain whether these regions …
We verify the nature of emission-line stars in the field of the open cluster NGC 6910. % Spectroscopy in the H-alpha region was obtained. Raw CCD frames of spectra of all stars fainter than V = 9 mag observed by us are significantly affected by nebular emission originating in the surrounding HII region IC 1318. After careful data reduction and subtraction of the nebular radiation we succeeded in obtaining reliable stellar spectra. We confirm that the star NGC 6910 37 is a Be star, and we have corrected the classification of V1973 Cyg from an Ae star to a normal A type star. Since the diffuse i…
We report the detection of a broad 22 microns emission feature in the Carina nebula H II region by the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) Short Wavelength Spectrometer. The feature shape is similar to that of the 22 microns emission feature of newly synthesized dust observed in the Cassiopeia A supernova remnant. This finding suggests that both of the features are arising from the same carrier, and that supernovae are probably the dominant production source of this new interstellar grain. A similar broad emission dust feature is also found in the spectra of two starburst galaxies from the ISO ar…
We investigate the dynamical condensation process in a magnetized thermally bistable medium. We perform one-dimensional two fluid numerical simulations that describe the neutral and ionized components in the interstellar medium with purely transverse magnetic fields. We find that the clouds that are formed as a consequence of the thermal instability always have a magnetic field strength on the order of a few microgauss irrespective of the initial strength. This shows good agreement with the measurements of the magnetic field strength in diffuse clouds. We show analytically that the final magne…
Observations of the nebula S3 associated with the WO star in the galaxy IC 1613 and of an extended region surrounding S3 are reported. The star and bright core of the nebula were observed with a multipupil fiber spectrograph mounted on the 6-m telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Images in the principle spectral lines and integrated spectra of the star and three compact clumps were obtained, and the radial-velocity field constructed. An extended region of the galaxy was observed with the Very Large Array at 21 cm. A giant ring or HI shell enclo…
Stellar and nebular abundance indicators reveal that there exists significant abundance fluctuations in the interstellar medium (ISM) of gas-rich galaxies. It is shown that at the present observed solar level of O/H $\sim 6 \times 10^{-4}$, abundance differences of a factor of two, such as existing between the Sun and the nearby Orion Nebula, are many times larger than expected. We examine a variety of hydrodynamical processes operating at scales ranging from 1 pc to greater than 10 kpc, and show that the ISM should appear better homogenized chemically than it actually is: $(i)$ on large galac…
We have studied the nearby old pulsar PSR B1929+10 and its surrounding interstellar medium utilizing the sub-arcsecond angular resolution of the Chandra X-ray Observatory. The Chandra data are found to be fully consistent with the results obtained from deep XMM-Newton observations as far as the pulsar is concerned. We confirm the non-thermal emission nature of the pulsar's X-radiation. In addition to the X-ray trail already seen in previous observations by the ROSAT and XMM-Newton X-ray observatories, we discovered an arc-like nebula surrounding the pulsar. We interpret the feature as a bow-sh…
Hydrodynamical simulations played an important role in understanding the dynamics and shaping of planetary nebulae in the past century. However, hydrodynamical simulations were just a first order approach. The new millennium arrived with the generalized understanding that the effects of magnetic fields were necessary to study the dynamics of planetary nebulae. Thus, B-fields introduced a whole new number of physical possibilities for the modeling. In this paper, we review observational works done in the last 5 years and several works on magnetohydrodynamics about proto-planetary nebulae, since…
The objective of this paper is to apply the recent achievements in understanding of the non-MHD effects in plasma (acquired both in laboratory experiments, as well as in theory), to the interstellar phenomena. Applied to the space plasma, these effects can significantly change the picture of plasma dynamics. Charged dust particles are always present in the interstellar medium and can easily remain not magnetized, even when the plasma electrons and ions are strongly magnetized. In such a medium, the magnetic field can propagate with the super-Alfven velocity. This breaks the local "frozen-in" l…
We conduct a series of magnetohydrodynamical (MHD) simulations of magnetized interstellar medium (ISM) disturbed by exploding stars. Each star deposits a randomly oriented, dipolar magnetic field into ISM. The simulations are performed in a Cartesian box, in a reference frame that is corotating with the galactic disk. The medium is stratified by vertical galactic gravity. The resulting turbulent state of ISM magnetized by the stellar explosions is processed with the aid of Fourier analysis. The results leads to the conclusion that the input of magnetic energy from exploding stars is additional…
Long-slit 8-13 um spectroscopy of the nebula around NGC 1333 SVS reveals spatial variations in the strength and shape of emission features which are probably produced by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Close to SVS 3, the 11.2 um feature develops an excess at ~10.8-11.0 um, and a feature appears at ~10 um. These features disappear with increasing distance from the central source, and they show striking similarities to recent laboratory data of PAH cations, providing the first identification of emission features arising specifically from ionized PAHs in the interstellar medium.
The cosmic abundance of the 3-He isotope has important implications for many fields of astrophysics. We are using the 8.665 GHz hyperfine transition of 3-He+ to determine the 3-He/H abundance in Milky Way HII regions and planetary nebulae. This is one in a series of papers in which we discuss issues involved in deriving accurate 3-He/H abundance ratios from the available measurements. Here we describe the ionization correction we use to convert the 3-He+/H+ abundance, y3+, to the 3-He/H abundance, y3. In principle the nebular ionization structure can significantly influence the y3 derived for …
The Owl Nebula is a triple-shell planetary nebula with the outermost shell being a faint bow-shaped halo. We have obtained deep narrow-band images and high-dispersion echelle spectra in the H-alpha, [O III], and [N II] emission lines to determine the physical structure of each shell in the nebula. These spatio-kinematic data allow us to rule out hydrodynamic models that can reproduce only the nebular morphology. Our analysis shows that the inner shell of the main nebula is slightly elongated with a bipolar cavity along its major axis, the outer nebula is a filled envelope co-expanding with the…
