Regular Maximal Monotone Multifunctions and Enlargements

Quasidense monotone multifunctions

In this paper, we discuss quasidense multifunctions from a Banach space into its dual, and use the two sum theorems proved in a previous paper to give various characterizations of quasidensity. We investigate the Fitzpatrick extension of such a multifunction. We prove that, for closed monotone multifunctions, quasidensity implies type (FPV) and strong maximality, and that quasidensity is equivalent to type (FP). This version differs from Version 3 in that a few minor errors have been corrected.

Gossez's skew linear map and its pathological maximally monotone multifunctions

In this note, we give a generalization of Gossez's example of a maximally monotone multifunction such that the closure of its range is not convex, using more elementary techniques than in Gossez's original papers. We also discuss some new properties of Gossez's skew linear operator and its adjoint. While most of this paper uses elementary functional analysis, we correlate our results with those obtained by using the Stone-Cech compactification of the integers.

Monotone Operators without Enlargements

Enlargements have proven to be useful tools for studying maximally monotone mappings. It is therefore natural to ask in which cases the enlargement does not change the original mapping. Svaiter has recently characterized non-enlargeable operators in reflexive Banach spaces and has also given some partial results in the nonreflexive case. The epsilon-enlargement of a maximal monotone operator is a construct similar to the Brøndsted and Rocakfellar epsilon-subdifferential enlargement of the subdifferential. Like the epsilon-subdifferential, the epsilon-enlargement of a maximal monotone operator has practical and theoretical applications. We discuss "Banach SN spaces", which include Hilbert spaces, negative Hilbert spaces, and the product of any real Banach space with its dual. We introduce "L-positive" sets, which generalize monotone multifunctions from a Banach space into its dual. Iterative roots of exclusive multifunctions

In this paper we investigate iterative roots of strictly monotone upper semi-continuous multifunctions having finitely many jumps. Known results are concerning roots of order 2 for multifunctions of exact one jump. For the general investigation, we introduce a concept `intensity' to formulate the growth of jumps under iteration and find a class of strictly monotone and upper semi-continuous multifunctions of intensity 1, called exclusive multifunctions, each of which has an absorbing interval. In his recent Proceedings of the AMS paper "Gossez's skew linear map and its pathological maximally monotone multifunctions", Stephen Simons proved that the closure of the range of the sum of the Gossez operator and a multiple of the duality map is nonconvex whenever the scalar is between 0 and 4.
