We theoretically investigate the dynamic properties of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a toroidal trap. A periodic modulation of the transverse confinement is shown to produce a density pattern due to parametric amplification of phonon pairs. By imaging the density distribution after free expansion one obtains i) a precise determination of the Bogoliubov spectrum and ii) a sensitive detection of quantized circulation in the torus. The parametric amplification is also sensitive to thermal and quantum fluctuations.
We consider Bose-Einstein condensed atoms confined in a toroidal trap. We demonstrate that under conditions of one-dimensional behavior, the density distribution of the atoms may be exponentially localized/delocalized, even for very small variations in the trapping potential along the torus. This observation allows one to control the atom density externally via slight modifications of the trapping potential. For similar reasons, small irregularities of the trap may also have a very pronounced effect on the density of the cloud.
We have observed the persistent flow of Bose-condensed atoms in a toroidal trap. The flow persists without decay for up to 10 s, limited only by experimental factors such as drift and trap lifetime. We study an experimentally realizable system containing stable black hole-white hole acoustic horizons in toroidally trapped Bose-Einstein condensates - the quantum de Laval nozzle. We numerically obtain stationary flow configurations and assess their stability using Bogoliubov theory, finding both in hydrodynamic and non-hydrodynamic regimes there exist dynamically unstable regions associated with the creation of positive and negative energy quasiparticle pairs in analogy with the gravitational Hawking effect. We examine the conditions that give rise to metastable, persistent currents in a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate. A necessary condition for the stability of persistent currents is that the trapping potential is not a monotonically increasing function of the distance from the trap center. Persistent currents also require that the interatomic interactions are sufficiently strong and repulsive. Finally, any off-center vortex state is shown to be unstable, while a driven gas shows hysteresis.
The dynamics of quantum vortices in a two-dimensional annular condensate are considered by numerically simulating the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. Families of solitary wave sequences are reported, both without and with a persistent flow, for various values of interaction strength. Investigating the quantum phase transition in a ring from a uniform attractive Bose-Einstein condensate to a localized bright soliton we find that the soliton undergoes transverse collapse at a critical interaction strength, which depends on the ring dimensions. In addition, we predict the existence of other soliton configurations with many peaks, showing that they have a limited stability domain. Finally, we show that the phase diagram displays several new features when the toroidal trap is set in rotation.
We study the possibility of angular Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state, in which the rotation symmetry is spontaneously broken, in population imbalanced fermion gases near the BCS-BEC crossover. We examine bosonic atoms that are confined in a toroidal, quasi-one-dimensional trap, subjected to a random potential. The resulting inhomogeneous atomic density is smoothened for sufficiently strong, repulsive interatomic interactions. Statistical analysis of our simulations show that the gas supports persistent currents, which become more fragile due to the disorder.

In this paper the macroscopic quantum states of Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices is studied by solving the periodic Gross-Pitaevskii equation in one-dimensional geometry. It is shown that an exact solution seen to be a travelling wave of excited macroscopic quantum states resultes in a persistent atom current which can be controlled by adjusting of the barrier height of the optical periodic potential. We study vortical states in a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) filling a cigar-shaped trap. An effective one-dimensional (1D) nonpolynomial Schroedinger equation (NPSE) is derived in this setting, for the models with both repulsive and attractive inter-atomic interactions. Analytical formulas for the density profiles are obtained from the NPSE in the case of self-repulsion within the Thomas-Fermi approximation, and in the case of the self-attraction as exact solutions (bright solitons). As a result, we demonstrate that the gas can exhibit hysteresis as the angular frequency of rotation of the trap is varied.
