Magnetic fields are proposed to play an important role in the formation and support of self-gravitating clouds and the formation and evolution of protostars in such clouds. We use R-band linear polarimetry collected for about 12000 stars in 46 fields with lines of sight toward the Pipe nebula to investigate the properties of the polarization across this dark cloud complex. Mean polarization vectors show that the magnetic field is locally perpendicular to the large filamentary structure of the Pipe nebula (the `stem'), indicating that the global collapse may have been driven by ambipolar diffusion. The polarization properties clearly change along the Pipe nebula. The northwestern end of the nebula (B59 region) is found to have a low degree of polarization and high dispersion in polarization position angle, while at the other extreme of the cloud (the `bowl') we found mean degrees of polarization as high as $\approx$15% and a low dispersion in polarization position angle. The plane of the sky magnetic field strength was estimated to vary from about 17 $μ$G in the B59 region to about 65 $μ$G in the bowl. We propose that three distinct regions exist, which may be related to different evolutionary states of the cloud; this idea is supported by both the polarization properties across the Pipe and the estimated mass-to-flux ratio that varies between approximately super-critical toward the B59 region and sub-critical inside the bowl. The three regions that we identify are: the B59 region, which is currently forming stars; the stem, which appears to be at an earlier stage of star formation where material has been through a collapsing phase but not yet given birth to stars; and the bowl, which represents the earliest stage of the cloud in which the collapsing phase and cloud fragmentation has already started.
We carried out deep and wide (about 8' x 8') JHKs imaging polarimetry in the southern region of the Eagle Nebula (M16). The polarization intensity map reveals that two YSOs with near-IR reflection nebulae are located at the tips of two famous molecular pillars (Pillars 1 and 2) facing toward the exciting stars of M16. The centrosymmetric polarization pattern are consistent with those around class I objects having circumstellar envelopes, confirming that star formation is now taking place at the two tips of the pillars under the influence of UV radiation from the exciting stars. Polarization me…
We report the detection of eighteen infrared reflection nebulae (IRNe) in the $J$, $H$, & $Ks$ linear polarimetric observations of the NGC 6334 massive star-formation complex, of which 16 IRNe are new discoveries. Our images cover $\sim$180 square arcminutes, one of the widest near-infrared polarization data in star-formation regions so far. These IRNe are most likely associated with embedded young OB stars at different evolutionary phases, showing a variety of sizes, morphologies, and polarization properties, which can be divided into four categories. We argue the different nebula characteris…
Using NICMOS on HST, we have performed imaging polarimetry of proto-planetary nebulae. Our objective is to study the structure of optically thin circumstellar shells of post-asymptotic giant branch stars by separating dust-scattered, linearly polarized star light from unpolarized direct star light. This unique technique allows us to probe faint reflection nebulae around the bright central star, which can be buried under the point-spread-function of the central star in conventional imaging. Our observations and archival search have yielded polarimetric images for five sources: IRAS 07134+1005 (…
We conducted wide-field JHKs imaging polarimetry toward NGC 2024. We found a prominent and extended polarized nebula over NGC 2024, and constrained the location of illuminating source of the nebula through the analysis of polarization vectors. A massive star, IRS 2b, is located in the center of the symmetric vector pattern. Five small polarized nebulae associated with YSOs are discovered on our polarization images. These nebulae are responsible for the structures of circumstellar matter that produce strongly polarized light through dust scattering. For the point-like sources, we performed soft…
We present the results of wide-field JHKs polarimetry toward the HII region S106 using the IRSF (Infrared Survey Facility) telescope. Our polarimetry data revealed an extended (up to ~ 5') polarized nebula over S106. We confirmed the position of the illuminating source of most of the nebula as consistent with S106 IRS4 through an analysis of polarization vectors. The bright portion of the polarized intensity is consistent with the red wing component of the molecular gas. Diffuse polarized intensity emission is distributed along the north--south molecular gas lanes. We found the interaction reg…
High-resolution near-infrared HST NICMOS (F160W, F222M) images and polarization (2 um) observations were made of four bipolar proto-planetary nebulae (PPNs): IRAS 17150-3224, IRAS 17441-2411, IRAS 17245-3951, and IRAS 16594-4656. The first three of these are viewed nearly edge-on, and for the first time the central stars in them are seen. Color maps reveal a reddened torus between the bipolar lobes in the edge-on cases, with bluer lobes. The polarization values are high, with maximum values ranging from 40 to 80%. The polarization patterns are basically centrosymmetric, with some deviations in…
High resolution near-infrared adaptive optics imaging and polarimetry have been obtained of the Homunculus Nebula and its central star Eta Carinae (HD 93308). Maps of the linear polarization at a resolution of <0.2'' have been made in the J, H and K bands and in a narrow 2.15micron continuum band (K_c). The overall appearance of the nebula in the near-IR is similar in all bands and to that at V, with specific features less sharp to longer wavelengths. The large-scale pattern of polarization vectors is centro-symmetric demonstrating that single scattering dominates everywhere except perhaps in …
The results of a near-infrared (J H K LP) imaging linear polarimetry survey of 20 young stellar objects (YSOs) in rho Ophiuchi are presented. The majority of the sources are unresolved, with K-band polarizations, P_K < 6 per cent. Several objects are associated with extended reflection nebulae. These objects have centrosymmetric vector patterns with polarization discs over their cores; maximum polarizations of P_K > 20 per cent are seen over their envelopes. Correlations are observed between the degree of core polarization and the evolutionary status inferred from the spectral energy distribut…
We have conducted deep JHKs imaging polarimetry of a ~8' x 8' area of the NGC 2071 star forming region. Our polarization data have revealed various infrared reflection nebulae (IRNe) associated with the central IR young star cluster NGC2071IR and identified their illuminating sources. There are at least 4 IRNe in NGC2071IR and several additional IRNe are identified around nearby young stars in the same field-of-view. Each illuminating source coincides with a known near-IR source except for IRS3, which is only a part of IRN2 and is illuminated by the radio source 1c. Aperture polarimetry of eac…
The process of data taking, reduction and calibration of near-infrared imaging polarimetry data taken with the ESO Adaptive Optics System ADONIS is described. The ADONIS polarimetric facility is provided by a rotating wire grid polarizer. Images were taken at increments of 22.5 degrees of polarizer rotation from 0 to 180 degrees, over-sampling the polarization curve but allowing the effects of photometric variations to be assessed. Several strategies to remove the detector signature are described. The instrumental polarization was determined, by observations of stars of negligible polarization…
For the first time we have directly detected magnetic fields in central stars of planetary nebulae by means of spectro-polarimetry with FORS1 at the VLT. In all four objects of our sample we found kilogauss magnetic fields, in NGC1360 and LSS1362 with very high significance, while in EGB5 and Abell36 the existence of a magnetic field is probable but with less certainty. This discovery supports the hypothesis that the non-spherical symmetry of most planetary nebulae is caused by magnetic fields in AGB stars. Our high discovery rate demands mechanisms to prevent full conservation of magnetic flu…
We have used laser guide star adaptive optics and a near-infrared dual-channel imaging polarimeter to observe light scattered in the circumstellar environment of Herbig Ae/Be stars on scales of 100-300 AU. We discover a strongly polarized, biconical nebula 10 arcseconds in diameter (6000 AU) around the star LkHa 198, and also observe a polarized jet-like feature associated with the deeply embedded source LkHa 198-IR. The star LkHa 233 presents a narrow, unpolarized dark lane consistent with an optically thick circumstellar disk blocking our direct view of the star. These data show that the low…
We have conducted aperture polarimetry of ~500 stars of the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC) in M42 based on our wide-field (~8'\times 8') $JHKs$ band polarimetry. Most of the near-infrared (NIR) polarizations are dichroic, with position angles of polarization agreeing, both globally and locally, with previous far-infrared (FIR) and submillimeter observations, having taken into account the 90$^\circ $ difference in angles between dichroic absorption and emission. This is consistent with the idea that both NIR dichroic polarizations and FIR/submillimeter thermal polarizations trace the magnetic field…
High-resolution K band imaging polarimetry of the beta Pic dust disk has been conducted with adaptive optics and a coronagraph using the Subaru 8.2-m telescope. Polarization of ~10 % is detected out to r ~ 120 AU with a centro-symmetric vector pattern around the central star, confirming that the disk is seen as an infrared reflection nebula. We have modeled our near-infrared and previous optical polarization results in terms of dust scattering in the disk and have found that both the degrees of polarization and the radial intensity profiles are well reproduced. We argue that the observed chara…
Neutron stars generate powerful winds of relativistic particles that form bright synchrotron nebulae around them. Polarimetry provides a unique insight into the geometry and magnetic configuration of the wind, but high-energy measurements have failed until recently. The Integral-IBIS telescope has been used in its Compton mode to search for linearly polarized emission for energies above 200 keV from the Crab nebula. The asymmetries in the instrument response are small and we obtain evidences for a strongly polarized signal at an angle parallel to the pulsar rotation axis. This result confirms …
We present submillimeter polarimetry at 850 micron toward the filamentary star-forming region associated with the reflection nebulosity NGC 2068 in Orion B. These data were obtained using the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope's SCUBA polarimeter. The polarization pattern observed is not consistent with that expected for a field geometry defined by a single mean field direction. There are three distinct distributions of polarization angle, which could represent regions of differing inclination and/or field geometry within the filamentary gas. In general, the polarization pattern does not correlate …
We present images and light curves of the bipolar Planetary Nebula RPJ 053059-683542 that was discovered in the Reid-Parker AAO/UKST H-alpha survey of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). The emission from this object appears entirely nebular, with the central star apparently obscured by a central band of absorption that bisects the nebula. The light curves, which were derived from images from the SuperMACHO project at CTIO, showed significant, spatially resolved variability over the period 2002 January through 2005 December. Remarkably, the emission from the two bright lobes of the nebula vary e…
We have made high-quality measurements of the polarization spectra of 13 FR II radio galaxies and taken polarization images for 11 of these with the Keck telescopes. Seven of the eight narrow-line radio galaxies (NLRG) are polarized, and six of the seven show prominent broad Balmer lines in polarized light. The broad lines are also weakly visible in total flux. Some of the NLRG show bipolar regions with roughly circumferential polarization vectors, revealing a large reflection nebula illuminated by a central source. Our observations powerfully support the hidden quasar hypothesis for some NLRG…
Wide-field (~8' x 8') and deep near-infrared (JHKs bands) polarization images of the Orion nebulae (IRNe) around young stellar objects (YSOs), both massive and low-mass. We found the IRNe around both IRc2 and BN to be very extensive, suggesting that there might be two extended (>0.7 pc) bipolar/monopolar IRNe in these sources. We discovered at least 13 smaller-scale (~0.01-0.1 pc) IRNe around less-massive YSOs including the famous source theta^2 Ori C. We also suggest the presence of many unresolved (<690 AU) systems around low-mass YSOs and young brown dwarfs showing possible intrinsic polari…
We present a 8 deg x 6 deg, high resolution extinction map of the Pipe nebula using 4.5 million stars from the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) point source catalog. The use of NICER, a robust and optimal technique to map the dust column density, allows us to detect a Av = 0.5 mag extinction at a 3-sigma level with a 1 arcmin resolution. We find for the Pipe nebula a normal reddening law, E(J-H) = (1.85 +/- 0.15) E(H-K). We measure the cloud distance using Hipparchos and Tycho parallaxes, and obtain ~130 pc. This, together with the total estimated mass, 10^4 Msun, makes the Pipe the closest m…
We present molecular-line observations of 94 dark cloud cores identified in the Pipe nebula through near-IR extinction mapping. Using the Arizona Radio Observatory 12m telescope, we obtained spectra of these cores in the J=1-0 transition of C18O. We use the measured core parameters, i.e., antenna temperature, linewidth, radial velocity, radius and mass, to explore the internal kinematics of these cores as well as their radial motions through the larger molecular cloud. We find that the vast majority of the dark extinction cores are true cloud cores rather than the superposition of unrelated fi…
Aims: The recent outburst of the young eruptive star V1647 Orionis has produced a spectacular appearance of a new reflection nebula in Orion (McNeil's nebula). We present an optical/near infrared investigation of McNeil's nebula. This analysis is aimed at determining the morphology, temporal evolution and nature of the nebula and its connection to the outburst. Method: We performed multi epoch B, V, R, I, z, and K imaging of McNeil's nebula and V1647 Ori as well as K_S imaging polarimetry. The multiband imaging allows us to reconstruct the extinction map inside the nebula. Through polarimetric…
Recent extinction studies of the Pipe Nebula (d=130 pc) reveal many cores spanning a range in mass from 0.2 to 20.4 Msun. These dense cores were identified via their high extinction and comprise a starless population in a very early stage of development. Here we present a survey of NH3 (1,1), NH3 (2,2), CCS (2_1,1_0), and HC5N (9,8) emission toward 46 of these cores. An atlas of the 2MASS extinction maps is also presented. In total, we detect 63% of the cores in NH3 (1,1) 22% in NH3 (2,2), 28% in CCS, and 9% in HC5N emission. We find the cores are associated with dense gas (~10^4 cm-3) with 9.…

Protoplanetary nebulae typically present non-spherical envelopes. The origin of such geometry is still controversial. There are indications that it may be carried over from an earlier phase of stellar evolution, such as the AGB phase. But how early in the star's evolution does the non-spherical envelope appear? Li-rich giants show dusty circumstellar envelopes that can help answer that question. We study a sample of fourteen Li-rich giants using optical polarimetry in order to detect non-spherical envelopes around them. We used the IAGPOL imaging polarimeter to obtain optical linear polarizati…
We obtained H-band polarimetric data of IRAS 19312+1950 using the near-infrared camera (CIAO) on the 8 m Subaru telescope. In order to investigate the physical properties of the central star and the nebula, we performed dust radiative transfer modeling and compared the model results with the observed spectral energy distributions (SEDs), the radial profiles of the total intensity image, and the fraction of linear polarization map. The total intensity image shows a nearly spherical core with ~3" radius, an S-shaped arm extending ~10" in the northwest to southeast direction, and an extended lobe…
We present results from the Austral Winter 2003 observing campaign of SPARO, a 450 micron polarimeter used with a two-meter telescope at South Pole. We mapped large-scale magnetic fields in four Giant Molecular Clouds (GMCs) in the Galactic disk: NGC 6334, the Carina Nebula, G333.6-0.2 and G331.5-0.1. We find a statistically significant correlation of the inferred field directions with the orientation of the Galactic plane. Specifically, three of the four GMCs (NGC 6334 is the exception) have mean field directions that are within 15 degrees of the plane. The simplest interpretation is that the…
In this paper we present the results of a systematic investigation of an entire population of starless dust cores within a single molecular cloud. Analysis of extinction data shows the cores to be dense objects characterized by a narrow range of density. Analysis of C18O and NH3 molecular-line observations reveals very narrow lines. The non-thermal velocity dispersions measured in both these tracers are found to be subsonic for the large majority of the cores and show no correlation with core mass (or size). Thermal pressure is thus the dominate source of internal gas pressure and support for …
We have used the rocket-borne Wide-Field Imaging Survey Polarimeter (WISP) to image a 1.5 deg. by 4.8 deg. area of the western side of the LMC at a wavelength of 215 nm and a resolution of 1' x 1.5'. These are the first wide-field ultraviolet polarimetric images in astronomy. We find the UV background light of the LMC to be linearly polarized at levels ranging from 0.04 to ~0.4. In general, the polarization in a pixel increases as the flux decreases; the weighted mean value of polarization across the WISP field is 0.126 +/- 0.023. The LMC's diffuse UV background, in uncrowded areas, rises from…
We discuss a new class of Micro Pattern Gas Detectors, the Gas Pixel Detector (GPD), in which a complete integration between the gas amplification structure and the read-out electronics has been reached. An Application-Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) built in deep sub-micron technology has been developed to realize a monolithic device that is, at the same time, the pixelized charge collecting electrode and the amplifying, shaping and charge measuring front-end electronics. The CMOS chip has the top metal layer patterned in a matrix of 80 micron pitch hexagonal pixels, each of them directly …
We present full polarization Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) observations at 5 GHz and 15 GHz of 24 compact active galactic nuclei (AGN). These sources were observed as part of a pilot project to demonstrate the feasibility of conducting a large VLBI survey to further our understanding of the physical properties and temporal evolution of AGN jets. The sample is drawn from the Cosmic Lens All-Sky Survey (CLASS) where it overlaps with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey at declinations north of 15 degrees. There are 2100 CLASS sources brighter than 50 mJy at 8.4 GHz, of which we have chosen 24 for this…
Aims. Core-collapse supernovae may show significant polarization that implies non-spherically symmetric explosions. We observed the type II-plateau SN 2005af using optical polarimetry in order to verify whether any asphericity is present in the supernova temporal evolution. Methods. We used the IAGPOL imaging polarimeter to obtain optical linear polarization measurements in R (five epochs) and V (one epoch) broadbands. Interstellar polarization was estimated from the field stars in the CCD frames. The optical polarimetric monitoring began around one month after the explosion and lasted ~30 day…
e present Near Infrared imaging polarimetry of three regions of massive star formation, G$192.16 - 3.82$, Cepheus A, and W42. In W42 we have discovered a new bipolar nebula located at the far side of the HII region behind the visible cluster of exciting stars. The axis of this new nebula is aligned with the magnetic field threading the entire cluster region. Polarization in the bipolar outflow nebulosity associated with G192.16 is consistent with a single illuminating source, too faint to be detected at $2 \micron$. Polarization in the reflection nebulosity associated with Ceph A requires more…
