We present the discovery of two nearby L dwarfs from our 2MASS proper motion search, which uses multi-epoch 2MASS observations covering ~4700 square degrees of sky. 2MASS J18212815+1414010 and 2MASS J21481628+4003593 were overlooked by earlier surveys due to their faint optical magnitudes and their proximity to the Galactic Plane (10 degrees < |b| < 15 degrees). Assuming that both dwarfs are single, we derive spectrophotometric distances of ~10 pc, thus increasing the number of known L dwarfs within 10 pc to 10. In the near-infrared, 2MASS J21481628+4003593 shows a triangular-shaped H-band spectrum, strong CO absorption, and a markedly red J-Ks color (2.38+/-0.06) for its L6 optical spectral type. 2MASS J18212815+1414010 also shows a triangular-shaped H-band spectrum and a slightly red J-Ks color (1.78+/-0.05) for its L4.5 optical spectral type. Both objects show strong silicate absorption at 9-11 microns. Cumulatively, these features imply an unusually dusty photosphere for both of these objects. We examine several scenarios to explain the underlying cause for their enhanced dust content and find that a metal-rich atmosphere or a low-surface gravity are consistent with these results. 2MASS J18212815+1414010 may be young (and therefore have a low-surface gravity) based on its low tangential velocity of 10 km/s. On the other hand, 2MASS J21481628+4003593 has a high tangential velocity of 62 km/s and is therefore likely old. Hence, high metallicity and low-surface gravity may lead to similar effects.
We consider nearby young black holes formed after supernova explosions in close binaries whose secondary components are currently observed as the so-called runaway stars. Using data on runaway stars and making reasonable assumptions about the mechanisms of supernova explosions and binary breakup, we estimate the present position of nearby young black holes. For two objects, we obtained relatively small error regions ($\sim 50$-100 deg$^2$). The possibility of detecting these nearby young black holes is discussed.
The blue star reported in the field of the young LMC cluster NGC1818 by Elson et al. (1998) has the wrong luminosity and radius to be a "luminous white dwarf" member of the cluster. In addition, unless the effective temperature quoted by the authors is a drastic underestimate, the luminosity is much too low for it to be a cluster member in the post-AGB phase. Other possibilities, including that of binary evolution, are briefly discussed. However, the implication that the massive main sequence turnoff stars in this cluster can produce white dwarfs (instead of neutron stars) from single-star evo…
We use the Least Action Principle to predict the peculiar velocities of PSC-z galaxies inside $cz=2000$\km. Linear theory is used to account for tidal effects to $cz=15000$\km, and we iterate galaxy positions to account for redshift distortions. As the Least Action Principle is valid beyond Linear theory, we can predict reliable peculiar velocities even for very nearby galaxies (ie $cz \leq 500$\km). These predicted peculiar velocities are then compared with the observed velocities of 12 galaxies with Cepheid distances. The combination of the PSC-z galaxy survey (with its large sky coverage an…
The recent identification of several groups of young stars within 100 parsecs of the Sun has generated widespread interest. Given their proximity and possible age differences, these systems are ideally suited for detailed studies of disk evolution and planet formation. Here I discuss recent results and prospects for the near-future.
Flare stars were discovered in the late 1940s in the solar vicinity and were named UV Cet-type variables (classical FSs). Among the FSs within 100 pc we search for young stars. For the search we take spectra with sufficient resolution to resolve Lithium at 6707 Åand Calcium at 6718 Åof all the stars. The real young stars are prime targets for the search of extra-solar planets by direct imaging.
BeppoSAX and ASCA observations of the nearby (z=0.184), high-luminosity, radio-quiet quasar PDS456 are presented. The X-ray spectrum is characterized by a prominent ionized edge at 8-9 keV (originally discovered by RXTE, Reeves et al. 2000) and by a soft excess below 1.5 keV. The lack of any significant iron K alpha emission line suggests for the edge an origin from line-of-sight material rather than from reflection from a highly ionized accretion disc. The hard X-ray continuum is indeed well modelled by transmission through a highly-ionized medium with a large column density (N_H warm = 4.5 x…
By correcting the redshift--dependent distances for peculiar motions through a number of peculiar velocity field models, we recover the true distances of a wide, all-sky sample of nearby galaxies (~ 6400 galaxies with velocities cz<5500 km/s), which is complete up to the blue magnitude B=14 mag. Relying on catalogs of galaxy groups, we treat ~2700 objects as members of galaxy groups and the remaining objects as field galaxies. We model the peculiar velocity field using: i) a cluster dipole reconstruction scheme; ii) a multi--attractor model fitted to the Mark II and Mark III catalogs of galaxy…
We review the quantitative science that can be and has been done with redshift and peculiar velocity surveys of galaxies in the nearby universe. After a brief background setting the cosmological context for this work, the first part of this review focuses on redshift surveys. The practical issues of how redshift surveys are carried out, and how one turns a distribution of galaxies into a smoothed density field, are discussed. Then follows a description of major redshift surveys that have been done, and the local cosmography out to 8,000 km/s that they have mapped. We then discuss in some detai…
We present the results of a survey of nearby, young M stars for wide low-mass companions with IRAC on the Spitzer Space Telescope. We observed 40 young M dwarfs within 20 pc of the Sun, selected through X-ray emission criteria. A total of 10 candidate companions were found with IRAC colors consistent with T dwarfs. Extensive ground-based NIR follow-up observations rejected all these candidates. Two additional candidates were discovered via common proper motion measurements, one of which was rejected as a background object and the other is a bona fide companion to GJ 2060, a member of the AB Do…
X-ray emission has played a major role in the recent identification of several groups of young, nearby stars. The ROSAT All-Sky Survey (RASS) is due to its spatial completeness an important tool for discovering stellar associations and investigating their X-ray properties. However, it has comparatively low sensitivity and poor temporal coverage, and is therefore of limited use for variability studies. The situation is greatly improved by the new generation of X-ray observatories, e.g. for coronal X-ray sources XMM has about an order of magnitude higher sensitivity than the RASS and provides mu…
Given their proximity and age differences, nearby groups of young stars are valuable laboratories for investigations of disk evolution and diversity. The estimated 10-Myr age of groups like the TW Hydrae Association provides a strong constraint on disk evolution timescales and fills a significant gap in the age sequence between 1-Myr-old T Tauri stars in molecular clouds and 50-Myr-old nearby open clusters. I review the results of recent and on-going studies of dusty disks in three nearby groups --TW Hya, $η$ Cha and MBM 12-- that suggest rapid evolution of inner disks. However, it is unlikely…
The HST data archive contains images of several nearby spirals, suitable for detailed studies of the properties of individual star clusters and their surroundings. By combining structural information derived from HST images with ground-based photometry, it is possible to study cluster properties as a function of age and mass. While both the core- and effective radii of young clusters correlate with mass, the slopes of these relations are shallower than for a constant-density relation, implying that the mean density increases with cluster mass. This must be accounted for in theories for cluster…
Many extra-solar planets and a few planetary systems have been found indirectly by small periodic radial velocity variations around old nearby stars. The orbital characteristics of most of them are different from the planets in our solar system. Hence, planet formation theories have to be revised. Therefore, observational constraints regarding young planets would be very valuable. We have started a ground-based direct imaging search for giant planets in orbit around young nearby stars. Here, we will motivate the sample selection and will present our direct imaging observation of the very low-m…
The recent availability of accurate proper motion catalogs for millions of stars on the sky (e.g. Tycho-2, UCAC) can benefit projects for which age estimates are needed for stars that are plausibly young (<100 Myr-old) and within a few hundred pc of the Sun. Here I summarize how accurate proper motions have been useful in (1) identifying new, nearby, post-T Tauri star populations, and (2) estimating distances to young field stars which are lacking trigonometric parallax measurements. The later enables the calculation of stellar luminosities and isochronal ages -- two quantities critical for in…
We discuss the implications of the recent discovery that Starburst Nucleus Galaxies (SBNGs) have lower oxygen abundances than "normal galaxies" of the same morphological type. Our interpretation of this result is that SBNGs are young galaxies, still in the process of formation. We consider several alternatives, but none of them provides a viable explanation. This new result has important consequences for our understanding of galaxy evolution, as it confirms the scenario of hierarchical formation of galaxies, and explains recent observations of the Hubble Space Telescope.
A detailed description is given of the data analysis leading to the discovery of young massive star clusters (YMCs) in a sample of 21 nearby galaxies. A new useful tool, ishape, for the derivation of intrinsic shape parameters of compact objects is presented, and some test results are shown. Completeness tests for the cluster samples are discussed, and ishape is used to estimate cluster sizes. Half-light radii of 0 - 20 pc are derived for clusters in 2 of the most cluster-rich galaxies, NGC 1313 and NGC 5236, which is within the range spanned by globular clusters in the Milky Way and by YMCs i…
We present archival ROSAT data for three recently identified, nearby (D<70 pc), young (~10-40 Myr) stellar associations: the TW Hydrae Association, the Tucana-Horologium Association, and the beta Pic Moving Group. The distributions of ROSAT X-ray hardness ratios (HR1, HR2) for these three groups, whose membership is dominated by low-mass, weak-lined T Tauri stars, are tightly clustered and very similar to one another. The value of HR1 for TW Hya itself -- the only bona fide classical T Tauri star in any of the nearby groups -- is clearly anomalous among these nearby young stars. We compare the…
We introduce a dataset of 142 mostly late-type spiral, irregular, and peculiar (interacting or merging) nearby galaxies observed in UBVR at the Vatican Advanced Technology Telescope (VATT), and present an analysis of their radial color gradients. We confirm that nearby elliptical and early- to mid-type spiral galaxies show either no or only small color gradients, becoming slightly bluer with radius. In contrast, we find that late-type spiral, irregular, peculiar, and merging galaxies become on average redder with increasing distance from the center. The scatter in radial color gradient trends …
A substellar-mass object in orbit at about 300 astronomical units (AU) from the young low-mass star G196-3 was detected by direct imaging. Optical and infrared photometry and low- and intermediate-resolution spectroscopy of the faint companion, hereafter referred to as G196-3B, confirms its cool atmosphere and allows its mass to be estimated at 25^{+15}_{-10} Jupiter masses. The separation between both objects and their mass ratio suggest the fragmentation of a collapsing cloud as the most likely origin for G196-3B, but alternatively it could have originated from a proto-planetary disc which h…
We present HST/ACS images and color-magnitude diagrams for 25 nearby galaxies with radial velocities V_LG < 500 km/s. Distances are determined based on the luminosities of stars at the tip of the red giant branch that range from 2 Mpc to 12 Mpc. Two of the galaxies, NGC 4163 and IC 4662, are found to be the nearest known representatives of blue compact dwarf (BCD) objects. Using high-quality data on distances and radial velocities of 110 nearby field galaxies, we derive their mean Hubble ratio to be 68 km/(s Mpc) with standard deviation of 15 km/(s Mpc). Peculiar velocities of most of the gala…
We use an all--sky, complete sample of nearby galaxies, extracted from the LEDA data base, to map the optical galaxy density field in the nearby universe. In order to determine this field, we correct the redshift--dependent distances by testing some peculiar velocity field models and we correct the galaxy number density for the incompletion of the galaxy sample at large distances through the derivation of the galaxy luminosity function. Local galaxy density parameters calculated for different smoothing scales are meant to be used in forthcoming statistical studies of environmental effects on g…
In this paper we present a study of chemical abundances in six star-forming regions. Stellar parameters and metallicities are derived using high-resolution, high S/N spectra of weak-line T-Tauri stars in each region. The results show that nearby star-forming regions have a very small abundance dispersion (only 0.033dex in [Fe/H]). The average metallicity found is slightly below that of the Sun, although compatible with solar once the errors are taken into account. The derived abundances for Si and Ni show that the observed stars have the abundances typical of Galactic thin disk stars of the sa…
We briefly discuss the evolutionary path and observational appearance of isolated neutron stars (INSs) focusing on radioquiet objects. There are many reasons to believe that these sources are extremely elusive once the star surface has cooled down: their high spatial velocities, the long propeller stage and/or the very low accretion efficiency. We describe recent population synthesis models of close-by young INSs, highlighting the major difficulties encountered in the past by these simulations in reproducing the observed properties of known sources. As we show, a likely possibility is that mos…
We present deep high dynamic range infrared images of young nearby stars in the Tucana/Horologium and beta Pic associations, all ~ 10 to 35 Myrs young and at ~10 to 60 pc distance. Such young nearby stars are well-suited for direct imaging searches for brown dwarf and even planetary companions, because young sub-stellar objects are still self-luminous due to contraction and accretion. We performed our observations at the ESO 3.5m NTT with the normal infrared imaging detector SofI and the MPE speckle camera Sharp-I. Three arc sec north of GSC 8047-0232 in Horologium a promising brown dwarf comp…
Observing ROSAT sources in an area covering $\sim$30% of the Southern Hemisphere, we found evidences for a great nearby association (GAYA), comprising the proposed associations of Horologium (HorA) and the eastern part of Tucana (TucA), formed by at least 44 Post-T Tauri stars. The stars of the GAYA have similar space velocity components relative to the Sun (U, V, W) = ($-9.8 \pm 1.2, -21.7 \pm 1.1, -2.0 \pm 2.2$) km/s and their Li line intensities are between those of the classical T Tauri stars and the ones of the Local Association stars. The distances of the members of the GAYA cover an int…
Radial velocity searches for substellar mass companions have focused primarily on stars older than 1 Gyr. Increased levels of stellar activity in young stars hinders the detection of solar system analogs and therefore there has been a prejudice against inclusion of young stars in radial velocity surveys until recently. Adaptive optics surveys of young stars have given us insight into the multiplicity of young stars but only for massive, distant companions. Understanding the limit of the radial velocity technique, restricted to high-mass, close-orbiting planets and brown dwarfs, we began a surv…
We report a late M-type, common proper motion companion to a nearby young visual binary HIP 115147 (V368 Cep), separated by 963 arcseconds from the primary K0 dwarf. This optically dim star has been identified as a candidate high proper motion, nearby dwarf LSPM J2322+7847 by L{é}pine in 2005. The wide companion is one of the latest post-T Tauri low mass stars found within 20 pc. We obtain a trigonometric parallax of $51.6\pm0.8$ mas, in good agreement with the Hipparcos parallax of the primary star ($50.7\pm0.6$ mas). Our $BVRI$ photometric data and near-infrared data from 2MASS are consisten…
We report the results of VLT and Keck adaptive optics surveys of known members of the Eta Chamaeleontis, MBM 12, and TW Hydrae (TWA) associations to search for close companions. The multiplicity statistics of Eta Cha, MBM 12, and TWA are quite high compared with other clusters and associations, although our errors are large due to small number statistics. We have resolved S18 in MBM 12 and RECX 9 in Eta Cha into triples for the first time. The tight binary TWA 5Aab in the TWA offers the prospect of measuring the dynamical masses of both components as well as an independent distance to the syst…
We report first results from our ground-based infrared imaging search for sub-stellar companions (brown dwarfs and giant planets) of young (up to 100 Myrs) nearby (up to 75 pc) stars, where companions should be well separated from the central stars and still relatively bright due to ongoing accretion and/or contraction. Among our targets are all members of the TW Hya association, as well as other binary and single young stars either discovered recently among ROSAT sources (some of which as yet unpublished) or known before. Our observations are performed mainly with SOFI and SHARP at the ESO 3.…
High-resolution (R ~ 90,000) spectra of 34 nearby, young Sun-like stars were analyzed using stellar atmosphere models to estimate effective photosphere temperatures, surface gravities, and the abundance of certain heavy elements (C, Na, Mg, Si, S, Ca, Ti, Fe, and Ni). The effective temperatures derived from spectroscopy were compared with temperatures estimated using optical and near-infrared photometry. In many cases the spectroscopic temperatures are significantly higher than the photometric estimates, possibly as a result of spottedness or chromospheric activity on these active stars. Value…
Young stellar systems in the solar neighborhood provide valuable laboratories for detailed studies of star and planet formation. The bright F8V star HD 199143 and the Li-rich late-type emission line star HD 358623 are among the nearest young stars identified to date, and may be members of a young association in Capricornus. We present high-resolution near-infrared images of these two sources, obtained using the adaptive optics system on the 3.6-meter telescope at the European Southern Observatory in La Silla, Chile. Our observations reveal that both are in fact close binary systems. The newly …
(abridged) We present new 10-micron photometry of 21 nearby young stars obtained at the Palomar 5-meter and at the Keck I 10-meter telescopes as part of a program to search for dust in the habitable zone of young stars. Thirteen of the stars are in the F-K spectral type range ("solar analogs"), 4 have B or A spectral types, and 4 have spectral type M. We confirm existing IRAS 12-micron and ground-based 10-micron photometry for 10 of the stars, and present new insight into this spectral regime for the rest. Excess emission at 10 micron is not found in any of the young solar analogs, except for …
Using ground-based UBVRI+Halpha CCD photometry we have been carrying out a search for young massive star clusters (YMCs) in a sample consisting of 21 nearby spiral galaxies. We find a large variety concerning the richness of the cluster systems, with some galaxies containing no YMCs at all and others hosting very large numbers of YMCs. Examples of galaxies with poor cluster systems are NGC 300 and NGC 4395, while the richest cluster systems are found in the galaxies NGC 5236, NGC 2997 and NGC 1313. The age distributions of clusters in these galaxies show no obvious peaks, indicating that massi…
A significant population of stars with ages younger than the Pleiades exists in the solar neighborhood. They are grouped in loose young associations, sharing similar kinematical and physical properties, but, due to their vicinity to the Sun, they are dispersed in the sky, and hard to identify. Their strong stellar coronal activity, causing enhanced X-ray emission, allows them to be identified as counterparts of X-ray sources. The analysis presented here is based mainly on the SACY project, aimed to survey in a systematic way counterparts of ROSAT all-sky X-ray sources in the Southern Hemispher…
The unusual variable star V838 Monocerotis underwent an eruption in 2002. It continues to illuminate a spectacular series of light echoes, as the outburst light is scattered from circumstellar dust. V838 Mon has an unresolved B3 V companion star. We serendipitously discovered that a neighboring 16th-mag star is also of type B. We then carried out a survey of other stars in the vicinity, revealing two more B-type stars within 45" of V838 Mon. We have determined the distance to this sparse, young cluster, based on spectral classification and photometric main-sequence fitting of the three B stars…
We present high-dispersion (R~16,000) optical (3900-8700 A) spectra of 390 stars obtained with the Palomar 60 inch telescope. The majority of stars observed are part of the Spitzer Legacy Science Program "The Formation and Evolution of Planetary Systems." Through detailed analysis we determine stellar properties for this sample, including radial and rotational velocities, Li I 6708 and Ha equivalent widths, the chromospheric activity index R'_HK, and temperature- and gravity-sensitive line ratios. Several spectroscopic binaries are also identified. From our tabulations, we illustrate basic age…
It is unclear whether chemically peculiar stars of the upper main sequence represent a class completely distinct from normal A-type stars, or whether there exists a continuous transition from the normal to the most peculiar late F- to early B-type stars. A systematic abundance analysis of open cluster early-type stars would help to relate the observed differences of the chemical abundances of the photospheres to other stellar characteristics, without being concerned by possible different original chemical composition. Furthermore, if a continuous transition region from the very peculiar to the…
In a sample of six young open clusters we investigated 1753 objects using the narrow band, three filter Delta a photometric system resulting in the detection of eleven bona-fide magnetic chemically peculiar (CP) stars and five Be or metal-weak stars. The results for the distant cluster NGC 3105 is most important because of the still unknown influence of the global metallicity gradient of the Milky Way. These findings confirm that CP stars are present in open clusters of very young ages (log t > 6.90) at galactocentric distances up to 11.4 kpc. For all programme clusters the age, reddening, and…
The recently discovered magnetic Herbig Ae and Be stars may provide qualitatively new information about the formation and evolution of magnetic Ap and Bp stars. We have performed a detailed investigation of one particularly interesting binary system with a Herbig Ae secondary and a late B-type primary possessing a strong, globally ordered magnetic field. Twenty high-resolution Stokes V spectra of the system were obtained with the ESPaDOnS instrument mounted on the CFHT. In these observations we see clear evidence for a magnetic field in the primary, but no evidence for a magnetic field in the …
We analyzed 1441 Chandra X-ray point sources in 32 nearby galaxies. The total point-source X-ray luminosity L_XP is well correlated with B, K, and FIR+UV luminosities of spiral host galaxies, and with the B and K luminosities for ellipticals. This suggests an intimate connection between L_XP and both the old and young stellar populations, for which K and FIR+UV luminosities are proxies for the galaxy mass M and star-formation rate SFR. We derive proportionality constants 1.3E29 erg/s/Msol and 0.7E39 erg/s/(Msol/yr), which can be used to estimate the old and young components from M and SFR, res…
The results of Multiple Mirror Telescope spectrophotometry of the extremely low-metallicity blue compact galaxy (BCG) SBS 0335-052 are presented. The oxygen abundance in central brightest part of the galaxy is found to be 12 + log(O/H) = 7.33+-0.01. The N/O, Ne/O, S/O and Ar/O abundance ratios are close to those derived in other BCGs, suggesting that heavy element enrichment in the HII region is due to massive star evolution. We detect auroral [OIII] 4363 emission in the inner part of HII region with a diameter of 3.6 kpc and find that the HII region inside this diameter is hot, T_e~20000K. Th…
We present new multi-wavelength data for the NGC 4410 galaxy group. This group contains the peculiar radio galaxy NGC 4410A, which has a distorted double-lobed radio structure. NGC 4410A is strongly interacting with three nearby galaxies, and has a peculiar ring-like optical morphology, a number of luminous H II regions, as well as as tidal tails and bridges variously visible in optical, HI, and X-ray light. The gravitational interaction has affected the interstellar matter, the star formation rate, and the radio lobes in this system.
We report evidence for a planetary companion around the nearby young star HD 70573. The star is a G type dwarf located at a distance of 46 pc with age estimation between 20 and 300 Myrs. We carried out spectroscopic observations of this star with FEROS at the 2.2 m MPG/ESO telescope at La Silla. Our spectroscopic analysis yields a spectral type of G1-1.5V and an age of about 100 Myrs. Variations in stellar radial velocity of HD 70573 have been monitored since December 2003 until January 2007. The velocity accuracy of FEROS within this period is about 10 m/s. HD 70573 shows a radial velocity va…
In this paper we derive the galaxy luminosity function from the Nearby Optical Galaxy (NOG) sample, which is a nearly complete, magnitude-limited (B<14 mag), all-sky sample of nearby optical galaxies (~6400 galaxies with cz<5500 km/s). For this local sample, we use galaxy distance estimates based on different peculiar velocity models. Therefore, the derivation of the luminosity function is carried out using the locations of field and grouped galaxies in real distance space. The local field galaxy luminosity function in the B system is well described by a Schechter function. The exact values of…
We present a method designed to identify the spectral type of young (less than ~30 days after explosion) and nearby (z < ~0.05) supernovae (SNe) using their broad-band colors. In particular, we show that stripped-core SNe (i.e., hydrogen deficient core-collapse events, spectroscopically defined as SNe Ib and SNe Ic, including broad-lined SN 1998bw-like events) can be clearly distinguished from other types of SNe. Using the full census of nearby SNe discovered during the year 2002, we estimate the impact that prompt multi-band photometry, obtained by 1m class telescopes, would have on the early…
We present results of a high-resolution, near-infrared survey of 41 nearby, young (<~300 Myr) M0-M5.0 dwarfs using the Altair natural guide star adaptive optics system at the Gemini North telescope. Twelve of the objects appear to be binaries, 7 of which are reported here for the first time. One triple system was discovered. Statistical properties are studied and compared with earlier (F to K) and later (>= M6 very low-mass, VLM) populations. We find that the separation distribution of the binaries in this sample peaks at 13+14-9 AU, which is consistent with previous measurements of early-M bi…
We present a new reconstruction of the mass density and the peculiar velocity fields in the nearby universe using recent measurements of Tully-Fisher distances for a sample of late spirals. We find significant differences between our reconstructed fields and those obtained in earlier work: overdensities tend to be more compact while underdense regions, consisting of individual voids, are more abundant. Our results suggest that voids observed in redshift surveys of galaxies represent real voids in the underlying matter distribution. While we detect a bulk velocity of $\sim$ 300 \kms, within a t…
The TW Hya system is perhaps the closest analog to the early solar nebula. We have used the Very Large Array to image TW Hya at wavelengths of 7mm and 3.6 cm with resolutions 0.1 arcseconds (about 5 AU) and 1.0 arcseconds (about 50 AU), respectively. The 7mm emission is extended and appears dominated by a dusty disk of radius larger than 50 AU surrounding the star. The 3.6 cm emission is unresolved and likely arises from an ionized wind or gyrosynchrotron activity. The dust spectrum and spatially resolved 7mm images of the TW Hya disk are fitted by a simple model with temperature and surface d…
We describe Spitzer IRAC and MIPS observations of the nearby 25 Myr-old open cluster NGC 2232. Combining these data with ROSAT All-Sky Survey observations, proper motions, and optical photometry/spectroscopy, we construct a list of highly probable cluster members. We identify 1 A-type star, HD 45435, with definite excess emission at 4.5--24 micron indicative of debris from terrestrial planet formation. We also identify 2--4 late-type stars with possible 8 micron excesses, and 8 early-type stars with definite 24 micron excesses. Constraints on the dust luminosity and temperature suggest that th…
We describe a procedure to identify stars from nearby moving groups and associations out of catalogs of stars with large proper motions. We show that from the mean motion vector of a known or suspected moving group, one can identify additional members of the group based on proper motion data and photometry in the optical and infrared, with minimal contamination from background field stars. We demonstrate this technique by conducting a search for low-mass members of the Beta Pictoris Moving Group in the Tycho-2 catalog. All known members of the moving group are easily recovered, and a list of 5…
We detect the correlated peculiar velocities of nearby type Ia supernovae (SNe), while highlighting an error in some of the literature. We find sigma_8=0.79 +/- 0.22 from SNe, and examine the potential of this method to constrain cosmological parameters in the future. We demonstrate that a survey of 300 low-z SNe (such as the nearby SNfactory) will underestimate the errors on w by about 35% if the coherent peculiar velocities are not included.
We use milli-arcsecond accuracy astrometry (proper motions and parallaxes) from Hipparcos and from radio observations to retrace the orbits of 56 runaway stars and nine compact objects with distances less than 700 pc, to identify the parent stellar group. It is possible to deduce the specific formation scenario with near certainty for two cases. (i) We find that the runaway star zeta Ophiuchi and the pulsar PSR J1932+1059 originated about 1 Myr ago in a supernova explosion in a binary in the Upper Scorpius subgroup of the Sco OB2 association. The pulsar received a kick velocity of about 350 km…
We present infrared H- and K-band spectra of a companion candidate 3" north of the young star GSC 08047-00232, a probable member of the nearby young Horologium association. From previously obtained JHK-band colors and the magnitude difference between primary and companion candidate, the latter could well be substellar (Neuh"auser et al. 2003) with the spectral type being roughly M7-L9 from the JHK colors (Chauvin et al. 2003). With the H- and K-band spectra now obtained with ISAAC at the VLT, the spectral type of the companion candidate is found to be M6-9.5. Assuming the same age and distance…
Using adaptive optics on the Keck II 10-meter telescope on Mauna Kea, we have surveyed 24 of the nearest young stars known in search of close companions. Our sample includes members of the MBM 12 and TW Hydrae young associations and the classical T Tauri binary UY Aurigae in the Taurus star-forming region. We present relative photometry and accurate astrometry for 10 close multiple systems. The multiplicity frequency in the TW Hydrae and MBM 12 groups are high in comparison to other young regions, though the significance of this result is low because of the small number statistics. We resolve …
