The fluid theory of plasmas is extended to include the properties of electron spin. The linear theory of waves in a magnetized plasma is presented, and it is shown that the spin effects causes a change of the magnetic permeability. Furthemore, by changing the direction of the external magnetic field, the magnetic permability may become negative. This leads to instabilities in the long wavelength regimes. If these can be controlled, however, the spin plasma becomes a metamaterial for a broad range of frequencies, i.e. above the ion cyclotron frequency but below the electron cyclotron frequency. The consequences of our results are discussed.
Two dimensional modelling of the interaction between electromagnetic waves and plasma-metamaterial composite structures using the particle-in-cell method
We examine the properties of a gaseous plasma resonator generated by focusing a high-energy laser pulse through a lens and into a gas. An analytical model is presented describing the scattering resonance of these near-ellipsoidal plasmas and its dependence on their eccentricity and intrinsic plasma properties. This dependence is investigated through Ku band transmission experiments of a waveguide with an embedded single plasma element and through optical diagnostics of the laser-induced plasma. The described resonator has the potential to be used as the building block in a new class of metamat…
We apply inverse design methods to produce two-dimensional plasma metamaterial (PMM) devices. Backpropagated finite difference frequency domain (FDFD) simulations are used to design waveguides and demultiplexers operating under both transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) modes. Demultiplexing and waveguiding are demonstrated for devices composed of plasma elements with reasonable plasma densities ~7 GHz, allowing for future in-situ training and experimental realization of these designs. We also explore the possible applicability of PMMs to nonlinear boolean operations for use in…
In an expansion of a previous study [1], we apply inverse design methods to produce two-dimensional plasma metamaterial devices with realistic plasma elements which incorporate quartz envelopes, collisionality (loss), non-uniform density profiles, and resistance to experimental error/perturbation. Backpropagated finite difference frequency domain simulations are used to design waveguides and demultiplexers operating under the transverse magnetic polarization. Optimal devices with realistic elements are compared to previous devices with idealized elements, and several parameter initialization s…
Experiments as IceCube or Super-Kamiokande have been successful in detecting highly energetic neutrinos in the. Neutrinos in the ultra-low energy range ($\mathcal{E}<1.0~\rm{eV}$) have been theoretically predicted but their observation remain elusive, and no concrete experimental scheme has been proposed for that job. Here, we propose a novel scheme based on graphene plasmonic metamaterials to designed to detect ultra-low energetic neutrinos. We claim that slow neutrino fluxes, interacting with solid-state plasmas, can generate an instability due to the weak neutrino-plasmon interaction, which…
The idea of new diagnostics method for the small-scale irregular structures of magnetically confined plasma is suggested in the present paper. The method can be based on measurements of intensity attenuation of the normal sounding waves. Anomalous attenuation arises due to multiple scattering effects investigated earlier for ionospheric radio propagation. It has been shown that multiple scattering regime can realize in a tokamak plasma. Calculations of normal sounding wave anomalous attenuation in a tokamak plasma have been carried out. This quantity is large enough to be registered experiment…
Recent experiments with ultracold neutral plasmas show an intrinsic heating effect based on the development of spatial correlations. We investigate whether this effect can be reversed, so that imposing strong spatial correlations could in fact lead to cooling of the ions. We find that cooling is indeed possible. It requires, however, a very precise preparation of the initial state. Quantum mechanical zero-point motion sets a lower limit for ion cooling.
Here we discuss the possibility of employment of ultrarelativistic electron and proton bunches for generation of high plasma wakefields in dense plasmas due to the Cherenkov resonance plasma-bunch interaction. We estimate the maximum amplitude of such a wake and minimum system length at which the maximum amplitude can be generated at the given bunch parameters.
Runaway particles can be produced in plasmas with large electric fields. Here we address the possibility that such runaway ions and electrons excite Alfvénic instabilities. The magnetic perturbation induced by these modes can enhance the loss of runaways. This may have important implications for the runaway electron beam formation in tokamak disruptions.
The existence of soliton-like electromagnetic (EM) distributions in a fully degenerate electron-positron plasma is studied applying relativistic hydrodynamic and Maxwell equations. For circularly polarized wave it is found that the soliton solutions exist both in relativistic as well as nonrelativistic degenerate plasmas. Plasma density in the region of soliton pulse localization is reduced considerably. The possibility of plasma cavitation is also shown.
The possibility of formation of quasibound states and ordered structures in dense plasma is investigated. The effective potentials of dense plasma are used. On the basis of these models the condition of the ordered structures formation in the system is obtained. It is shown that in the dense classical plasma the quasibound states form whereas the ordered structures form in the dense semiclassical plasma.
Electron Cyclotron Emission (ECE) of different frequencies originates at different locations in non-uniformly magnetized plasmas. For simultaneous observation of multiple ECE frequencies from the outside edge of a toroidal plasma confinement device (e.g. a tokamak), the focal length of the collecting optics should increase with the frequency to maximize the resolution on a line of sight along the magnetic field gradient. Here we present the design and numerical study of a zoned metamaterial lens with such characteristics, for possible deployment with the 83-130 GHz ECE radiometer in the DIII-D…
We investigate the nonlinear interaction between a relativistically strong laser beam and a plasma in the quantum regime. The collective behavior of the electrons is modeled by a Klein-Gordon equation, which is nonlinearly coupled with the electromagnetic wave through the Maxwell and Poisson equations. This allows us to study the nonlinear interaction between arbitrarily large amplitude electromagnetic waves and a quantum plasma. We have used our system of nonlinear equations to study theoretically the parametric instabilities involving stimulated Raman scattering and modulational instabilitie…
An alternative mechanism is proposed for the generation of harmonics of the electron plasma frequency due to the development of explosive instability in a system of interpenetrating electron and proton flows in the solar atmosphere. The efficiency of the new mechanism in comparison with the earlier discussed mechanisms involving multistage processes of nonlinear interaction of waves in plasma is determined. It is shown that the development of explosive instability can lead to the excitation of the second and third harmonics of the plasma frequency with comparable amplitudes.
