The first-order bosonic field equations of the D-dimensional effective low energy theory which describes the massless background coupling of the D-dimensional fully Higgsed heterotic string are derived.
The topological twist of N=2, D=4 matter-coupled supergravities requires a suitable R-symmetry. This symmetry is realised in the effective supergravities arising at tree level from certain heterotic compactifications. The set of instanton equations (topological gauge-fixings) is thus obtained. The conditions that R-symmetry should satisfy also when these theories are replaced by their ``exact'' quantum-corrected counterparts are investigated.
We discuss R-symmetries in locally supersymmetric N=2 gauge theories coupled to hypermultiplets which can be thought of as effective theories of heterotic superstring models. In this type of supergravities a suitable R-symmetry exists and can be used to topologically twist the theory: the vector multiplet containing the dilaton-axion field has different R-charge assignments with respect to the other vector multiplets. Correspondingly a system of coupled instanton equations emerges, mixing gravitational and Yang--Mills instantons with triholomorphic hyperinstantons and axion-instantons. For the…
There exist two four-derivative extensions of $N=(1,0)$ supergravity in six dimensions. A particular combination of them is known to dualize to the analog of the the Bergshoeff-de Roo (BdR) action in $10D$. Here we first show that the two extensions are not related to each other by any field redefinitions. Next, we dualize them separately thereby obtaining a two parameter dual theory. This is done directly at the level of the action, thus avoiding the laborious method of integrating equations of motion of the dualized theory into an action. To explore whether a similar phenomenon exists in $10…
The reduction of ten-dimensional heterotic supergravity with Yang-Mills symmetry group K is performed on an arbitrary n-dimensional group manifold G. The reduction involves a nonvanishing 3-form flux, and the Lie algebra of G must have traceless structure constants to ensure the consistency of the reduction at the level of the action. A large class of gauged supergravities in d=10-n with (non)compact gaugings is obtained. The resulting models describe half-maximal gauged supergravities coupled to $ (n + {\rm dim} K)$ vector multiplets. We uncover their hidden $SO(n,n+{\rm dim} K)$ duality symm…
We analyze the class of four-dimensional N = 4 supergravities obtained by gauging the axionic shift and axionic rescaling symmetries. These theories are formulated with the machinery of embedding tensors and shown to be deducible from higher dimensions using a Scherk--Schwarz reduction with a twist by a non-compact symmetry. This allows to evade the usual unimodularity requirement and completes the dictionary between heterotic gaugings and fluxes, at least for the "geometric sector".
We extend the recently constructed double field theory formulation of the low-energy theory of the closed bosonic string to the heterotic string. The action can be written in terms of a generalized metric that is a covariant tensor under O(D,D+n), where n denotes the number of gauge vectors, and n additional coordinates are introduced together with a covariant constraint that locally removes these new coordinates. For the abelian subsector, the action takes the same structural form as for the bosonic string, but based on the enlarged generalized metric, thereby featuring a global O(D,D+n) symm…
It has been speculated in the literature that the effective actions of string theories at any order of $α'$ should be invariant under the Buscher rules plus their higher covariant derivative corrections. This may be used as a constraint to find effective actions at any order of $α'$, in particular, the metric, the B-field and the dilaton couplings in supergravities at order $α'^3$ up to an overall factor. For the simple case of zero B-field and diagonal metric in which we have done the calculations explicitly, we have found that the constraint fixes almost all the seven independent Riemann cur…
Kaluza-Klein sphere reductions of supergravities that admit AdS x Sphere vacuum solutions are believed to be consistent. The examples include the S^4 and S^7 reductions of eleven-dimensional supergravity, and the S^5 reduction of ten-dimensional type IIB supergravity. In this paper we provide evidence that sphere reductions of supergravities that admit instead Domain-wall x Sphere vacuum solutions are also consistent, where the background can be viewed as the near-horizon structure of a dilatonic p-brane of the theory. The resulting lower-dimensional theory is a gauged supergravity that admits…
We study the dimensional reduction of the ${\cal N}=1$, ten-dimensional Heterotic Supergravity to four dimensions, at leading order in $α'$, when the internal space is a nearly-Kähler manifold. Nearly-Kähler manifolds in six dimensions are all the non-symmetric coset spaces and a group manifold. Here we reduce the theory using as internal manifolds the three six-dimensional non-symmetric coset spaces, omitting the case of the group manifold in the prospect of obtaining chiral fermions when the gauge fields will be included. We determine the effective actions for these cases, which turn out to …
We construct the Killing superalgebra of supersymmetric backgrounds of ten-dimensional heterotic and type II supergravities and prove that it is a Lie superalgebra. We also show that if the fraction of supersymmetry preserved by the background is greater than 1/2, in the heterotic case, or greater than 3/4 in the type II case, then the background is locally homogeneous.
We obtain a three-parameter family of massive N=1 supergravities in three dimensions from the 3-sphere reduction of an off-shell N=(1,0) six-dimensional Poincare supergravity that includes a curvature squared invariant. The three-dimensional theory contains an off-shell supergravity multiplet and an on-shell scalar matter multiplet. We then generalise this in three dimensions to an eight-parameter family of supergravities. We also find a duality relationship between the six-dimensional theory and the N=(1,0) six-dimensional theory obtained through a T^4 reduction of the heterotic string effect…
We present f(R) theories of ten-dimensional supergravities, including the fermionic sector up to the quadratic order in fermion fields. They are obtained by performing the conformal scaling on the usual supergravities to the f(R) frame in which the dilaton becomes an auxiliary field and can be integrated out. The f(R) frame coincides with that of M-theory, D2-branes or NS-NS 5-branes. We study various BPS p-brane solutions and their near-horizon AdS \times sphere geometries in the context of the f(R) theories. We find that new solutions emerge with global structures that do not exist in the co…

The low energy effective action describing the standard Kaluza-Klein reduction of heterotic string theory on a d-torus possesses a manifest O(d,d+16) symmetry. We consider generalized Scherk-Schwarz reductions of the heterotic string to construct massive gauged supergravities. We show that the resulting action can still be written in a manifestly O(d,d+16) invariant form, however, the U-duality transformations also act on the mass parameters. The latter play the dual role of defining the scalar potential and the nonabelian structure constants. We conjecture that just as for the standard reduct…
Closed string theories on orbifolds contain both untwisted and twisted states. The latter are normally assumed to live exactly at the orbifold fixed points. We perform a calculation of a gauge field tadpole amplitude and show that off-shell both the twisted and untwisted states give rise to non-trivial momentum profiles over the orbifold C^3/Z_3. These profiles take the form of Gaussian distributions integrated over the fundamental domain of the modular parameter of the torus. The propagators of the internal coordinate fields on the torus world sheet determine the width of the Gaussian profile…
We perform the generalised dimensional reduction of D=11 supergravity over three-dimensional group manifolds as classified by Bianchi. Thus, we construct eleven different maximal D=8 gauged supergravities, two of which have an additional parameter. One class of group manifolds (class B) leads to supergravities that are defined by a set of equations of motion that cannot be integrated to an action. All 1/2 BPS domain wall solutions are given. We also find a non-supersymmetric domain wall solution where the single transverse direction is time. This solution describes an expanding universe and up…
We study R^4 corrections in heterotic M-theory. We derive to order kappa^{4/3} the induced modification to the Kahler potential of the universal moduli and its implications for the soft supersymmetry breaking terms. The soft scalar field masses still remain small for breaking in the T-modulus direction. We investigate the deformations of the background geometry due to the R^4 term. The warp-factor deformation of the background M_4 x CY(3) x S^1/Z_2 can no longer be integrated to a fully non-linear solution, unlike when neglecting higher derivative corrections. We find explicit solutions to ord…
By integrating out the heavy fields in type II or heterotic string field theory one can construct the effective action for the light fields. This effective theory inherits all the algebraic structures of the parent theory and the effective action automatically satisfies the Batalin-Vilkovisky quantum master equation. This theory is manifestly ultraviolet finite, has only light fields as its explicit degrees of freedom, and the Feynman diagrams of this theory reproduce the exact scattering amplitudes of light states in string theory to any arbitrary order in perturbation theory. Furthermore in …
