The critical state of the vortex lattice in a thin strip is considered for the case when first a perpendicular magnetic field is applied, then a longitudinal field, and then again the perpendicular field is increased. This longitudinal field can strongly enhance the critical currents in the strip since the vortices are inclined and the currents flow in the strip plane.
Analytic expressions for alternating current (ac) loss in radially arranged superconducting strips are presented. We adopt the weight-function approach to obtain the field distributions in the critical state model, and we have developed an analytic method to calculate hysteretic ac loss in superconducting strips for small-current amplitude. We present the dependence of the ac loss in radial strips upon the configuration of the strips and upon the number of strips. The results show that behavior of the ac loss of radial strips carrying bidirectional currents differs significantly from that carr…
Current distribution for a thin superconducting strip shielded by two ideally conducting plains has been calculated. It is shown that at microwave requencies the current density has maximum over the center of the strip in contrast to the dc current pattern, which exhibits crowding over the edges.
The complex impedance, currents, and electric and magnetic fields are calculated as functions of resistivity and frequency or London depth for a long thin strip with applied ac current. Both Ohmic and superconducting strips are considered. While the inductance per unit length of the strip depends on the strip length logarithmically, the sheet current, magnetic field, resistance, and magnetic susceptibility are independent of this length. It is found that the enhancement of resistance by the skin effect in thin Ohmic strips is much weaker (logarithmic) than in thick wires.
The hysteretic ac loss of a current-carrying conductor in which multiple superconducting strips are polygonally arranged around a cylindrical former is theoretically investigated as a model of superconducting cables. Using the critical state model, we analytically derive the ac loss $Q_n$ of a total of $n$ strips. The normalized loss $Q_n/Q_1$ is determined by the number of strips $n$ and the ratio of the strip width $2w$ to the diameter $2R$ of the cylindrical former. When $n>> 1$ and $w/R<< 1$, the behavior of $Q_n$ is similar to that of an infinite array of coplanar strips.
The vortex structure in superconducting stripe states is studied according to the Bogoliubov-de Gennes theory on the two-dimensional Hubbard model with nearest-neighbor sites pairing interaction. The vortex is trapped at the outside region of the stripe line, where the superconductivity is weak. The superconducting coherence length along the stripe direction becomes long. There are no eminent low-energy electronic states even near the vortex core. These characters resemble the Josephson vortex in layered superconductors under a parallel field.
The complex-field approach is developed to derive analytical expressions of the magnetic field distributions around superconducting strips on ferromagnetic substrates (SC/FM strips). We consider the ferromagnetic substrates as ideal soft magnets with an infinite magnetic permeability, neglecting the ferromagnetic hysteresis. On the basis of the critical state model for a superconducting strip, the ac susceptibility $χ_1'+iχ_1''$ of a SC/FM strip exposed to a perpendicular ac magnetic field is theoretically investigated, and the results are compared with those for superconducting strips on nonm…
We calculate the critical magnetic fields for vortex expulsion for an infinitely long superconducting strip, using the Ginzburg-Landau formalism. Two critical fields can be defined associated with the disappearance of either the energetic stability or metastability of vortices in the center of the strip for decreasing magnetic fields. We compare the theoretical predictions for the critical fields in the London formalism with ours and with recently published experimental results. As expected, for narrow strips our results reproduce better the experimental findings.
We have theoretically investigated the magnetic response of two-dimensional (2D) arrays of superconducting and soft magnetic strips, which are regarded as models of dc magnetic metamaterials. The anisotropy of the macroscopic permeabilities depends on whether the applied magnetic field is parallel to the wide surface of the strips ($μ_{\parallel}$) or perpendicular ($μ_{\perp}$). For the 2D arrays of superconducting strips, $0<μ_{\perp}/μ_0\ll μ_{\parallel}/μ_0\simeq 1$, whereas for the 2D arrays of soft magnetic strips, $μ_{\parallel}/μ_0\ggμ_{\perp}/μ_0\simeq 1$, where $μ_0$ is the vacuum pe…
I consider a Josephson junction crossing the middle of a thin rectangular superconducting strip of length L and width W subjected to a perpendicular magnetic induction B. I calculate the spatial dependence of the gauge-invariant phase difference across the junction and the resulting B dependence of the critical current Ic(B).
Little-Parks oscillation of a Möbius strip (or ring equivalently) made of a superconductor is studied based on Ginzburg-Landau theory. It is shown that, if the strip is wide enough, a novel state appears when the number of magnetic flux quanta threading the ring is close to a half odd integer. As a result the shape of Little-Parks oscillation of critical temperature is modified. We estimate the free energy of this state and give the phase diagram of the superconducting Möbius strip in a magnetic field.
The kinetic inductance properties of a thin superconducting sample of BSCCO-2223 compound is studied. A strong dependence of kinetic inductance with the variation of applied magnetic field is found at low temperature in the superconducting state. The kinetic inductance of a thin superconductor increases linearly with increasing magnetic field. This behavior is used for designing a superconducting modulator circuit. This behavior can be useful for device applications and designing of superconducting electronic circuits like superconducting power amplifier, superconducting transmitter and superc…
Vortex trapping is investigated in thin-film strips of superconducting material. We present a model for the critical field above which vortex trapping occurs in these strips. This model includes the pairing energy of vortex-antivortex pairs in addition to the energy of single vortices. Experimental verification of the model with a scanning SQUID microscope shows very good agreement between the model and experiments on YBa2Cu3O7-delta and Nb strips. Statistical analysis of the vortex distribution in the strips above the critical field has been performed and a comparison has been made between Nb…
We theoretically investigate the magnetic response of two-dimensional arrays of superconducting strips, which are regarded as essential structures of dc magnetic metamaterials. We analytically obtain local distributions of the magnetic field for the ideal complete shielding state (i.e., $Λ/w\to 0$, where $2w$ is the strip width, $Λ=λ^2/d$ is the Pearl length, $λ$ is the London penetration depth, and $d$ is the strip thickness), and derive effective permeability by averaging the local field distributions. We also perform numerical calculations for a realistic case, taking finite $Λ/w>0$ into ac…
We show that a magnetic strip on top of a superconducting strip magnetized in a specified direction may considerably enhance the critical current in the sample. At fixed magnetization of the magnet we observed diode effect - the value of the critical current depends on the direction of the transport current. We explain these effects by a influence of the nonuniform magnetic field induced by the magnet on the current distribution in the superconducting strip. The experiment on a hybrid Nb/Co structure confirmed the predicted variation of the critical current with a changing value of magnetizati…
The problem of calculating the ac losses in a superconductor strip with a transport current placed inside superconducting environments is studied analytically in the frame of the critical state model. Exact results obtained by the method of images for the commonly employed flat ground plates are used to derive power losses and, consequently, the nonlinear resistance depending on the ac frequency, current amplitude and the distance to the ground plates. The resistance is strongly reduced when the distance between the strip and the shields becomes small.
We experimentally study effect of single circular hole on the critical current $I_c$ of narrow superconducting strip with width $W$ much smaller than Pearl penetration depth $Λ$. We found nonmonotonous dependence of $I_c$ on the location of a hole across the strip and a weak dependence of $I_c$ on radius of hole has been found in case of hole with $ξ\ll R \ll W$ ($ξ$ is a superconducting coherence length) which is placed in the center of strip. The observed effects are caused by competition of two mechanisms of destruction of superconductivity - the entrance of vortex via edge of the strip and…
Flux penetrations into three-dimensional Nb superconducting strip arrays, where two layers of strip arrays are stacked by shifting a half period, are studied using a magneto-optical imaging method. Flux avalanches are observed when the overlap between the top and bottom layers is large even if the width of each strip is well below the threshold value. In addition, anomalous linear avalanches perpendicular to the strip are observed in the shifted strip array when the overlap is very large and the thickness of the superconductor is greater than the penetration depth. We discuss possible origins …
We calculate the magnetic-field dependence of the critical current due to both geometrical edge barriers and bulk pinning in a periodic coplanar array of narrow superconducting strips. We find that in zero or low applied magnetic fields the critical current can be considerably enhanced by the edge barriers, but in modest applied magnetic fields the critical current reduces to that due to bulk pinning alone.
In this paper I first analytically calculate the magnetic-field and sheet-current distributions generated in an infinite stack of thin superconducting strips of thickness d, width 2a >> d, and arbitrary separation D when adjacent strips carry net current of magnitude I in opposite directions. Each strip is assumed to have uniform critical current density Jc, critical sheet-current density Kc = Jc d, and critical current Ic = 2a Kc, and the distribution of the current density within each strip is assumed to obey critical-state theory. I then derive expressions for the ac losses due to magnetic-…
We theoretically investigate the magnetic-field and current distributions for coplanar superconducting strips with slits in an applied magnetic field H_a. We consider ideal strips with no bulk pinning and calculate the hysteretic behavior of the magnetic moment m_y as a function of H_a due solely to geometrical edge barriers. We find that the m_y-H_a curves are strongly affected by the slits. In an ascending field, the m_y-H_a curves exhibit kink or peak structures, because the slits prevent penetration of magnetic flux. In a descending field, m_y becomes positive, because magnetic flux is tra…
The theory of current transport in a narrow superconducting channel accounting for thermal fluctuations is revisited. The value of voltage appearing in the sample is found as the function of temperature (close to transition temperature $T-T_{\mathrm{c}}$ $\ll T_{\mathrm{c}}$) and bias current $J<J_{\mathrm{c}}$ ( $J_{\mathrm{c}}$ is a value of critical current calculated in the framework of the BCS approximation, neglecting thermal fluctuations). It is shown that the careful analysis of vortex crossing of the stripe results in considerable increase of the activation energy.
Vortices in a narrow superconducting strip with a square array of pinning sites are studied. The interactions of vortices with other vortices and with external sources (applied magnetic field and transport current) are calculated via a screened Coulomb model. The edge barrier is taken into account and shown to have an important role on the system dynamics. Numerical simulations in this approach show that the field dependent magnetic moment presents peaks corresponding to history dependent configurations of the vortex lattice. Some effects of the edge barrier on the I-V characteristics are also…
We analyze the magnetic-field profiles H_z(x) at the upper (lower) surface of a superconducting strip in an external magnetic field, with z perpendicular to the plane of the strip and x along its width. The external magnetic field H_a is perpendicular or inclined to the plane of the strip. We show that an asymmetry of the profiles H_z(x) appears in an oblique magnetic field H_a and also in the case when the angular dependence of the critical current density j_c in the superconductor is not symmetric relative to the z axis. The asymmetry of the profiles is related to the difference ΔH_z(x) of t…
We study the current-voltage characteristic of narrow superconducting strips in the gapless regime near the critical temperature in the framework of the Ginzburg-Landau model. Our focus is on its instabilities occurring at high current biases. The latter are consequences of dynamical states with periodic phase-slip events in space and time. We analyze their structure and derive the value of the reentrance current at the onset of the instability of the normal state. It is expressed in terms of the kinetic coefficient of the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equation and calculated numerically.
The photon count rate of superconducting single photon detectors made of MoSi films shaped as a $2\,μ$m-wide strip and a 115 nm-wide meander stripline is studied experimentally as a function of the dc biasing current at different values of the perpendicular magnetic field. For the wide strip a crossover current $I_\textrm{cross}$ is observed, below which the photon count rate increases with increasing magnetic field and above which it decreases. This behavior contrasts with the narrow MoSi meander for which no crossover current is observed, thus suggesting different photon detection mechanisms…
In this paper I show how to calculate the effect of a nearby Pearl vortex or antivortex upon the critical current $I_c(B)$ when a perpendicular magnetic induction $B$ is applied to a planar Josephson junction in a long, thin superconducting strip of width $W$ much less than the Pearl length $Λ= 2λ^2/d$, where $λ$ is the London penetration depth and $d$ is the thickness ($d < λ$). The theoretical results provide a qualitative explanation of unusual features recently observed experimentally by Golod {\it et al.}\cite{Golod10} in a device with a similar geometry.
In this paper I discuss analytic and numerical calculations of the magnetic-field and sheet-current distributions in superconducting strips of width 2a and arbitrary thickness 2b at the center when the cross section is an ellipse, a rectangle, and a shape intermediate between these limits. Using critical-state theory, I use several methods to determine the functional dependence of the ac transport-current losses upon F = I/Ic, where I is the peak alternating current and Ic is the critical current, and I discuss how this dependence can be affected by the cross-sectional shape, aspect ratio, and…
The critical state of a thin superconducting strip in an oblique applied magnetic field H_a is analyzed without any restrictions on the dependence of the critical current density j_c on the local magnetic induction {\bf B}. In such a strip, j_c is not constant across the thickness of the sample and differs from J_c/d, where J_c is the critical sheet current. It is shown that in contrast to the case of {\bf B}-independent j_c, the profiles H_z(x) of the magnetic-field component perpendicular to the strip plane generally depend on the in-plane component H_{ax} of the applied magnetic field H_a, …
Recent theoretical and experimental research on low-bulk-pinning superconducting strips has revealed striking dome-like magnetic-field distributions due to geometrical edge barriers. The observed magnetic-flux profiles differ strongly from those in strips in which bulk pinning is dominant. In this paper we theoretically describe the current and field distributions of a superconducting strip under the combined influence of both a geometrical edge barrier and bulk pinning at the strip's critical current Ic, where a longitudinal voltage first appears. We calculate Ic and find its dependence upon …
Analytical expressions for the evaluation of AC losses in a superconductor-metal composite strip in a nonuniform AC magnetic field having the form of a standing wave are derived. The considered configuration models superconducting tapes, thin films and coated superconductors. A distinctive feature of the problem is the appearance of a transverse component of the induced current that converts the problem to a two-dimensional one. Bean's critical state model for a superconductor and a low frequency approximation for a metal are used. In the framework of this approximation the influence of eddy c…
We present the theoretical approach to study the unconventional Josephson junction (uJJ) made by putting the non-superconduncting strip on the top of superconducting strip. We work in the framework of the Ginzburg-Landau, Bogoliubov de Gennes and Usadel formalisms. We solve the non-linear parital differential equations numerically for few simple cases. We obtaine the eigenenergies of the uJJ by means of combined GL and BdGe method. cases. We predict the occurence of the physical effect, which we call the topological Meissner effect. Basing on the obtained results and current knowledge on Josep…
The phase difference between the banks of an edge-type planar Josephson junction crossing the narrow thin-film strip depends on wether or not vortices are present in the junction banks. For a vortex close to the junction this effect has been seen by Golod, Rydh, and Krasnov, \prl {\bf 104}, 227003 (2010), who showed that the vortex may turn the junction into $π$-type. It is shown here that even if the vortex is far away from the junction, it still changes the 0-junction to $π$-junction when situated close to the strip edges. Within the approximation used, the latter effect is independent of th…
The effect of a magnetic field on the charge stripe order in La(2-x)Ba(x)CuO(4) has been studied by means of high energy (100 keV) x-ray diffraction for charge carrier concentrations ranging from strongly underdoped to optimally doped. We find that charge stripe order can be significantly enhanced by a magnetic field applied along the c-axis, but only at temperatures and dopings where it coexists with bulk superconductivity at zero field. The field also increases stripe correlations between the planes, which can result in an enhanced frustration of the interlayer Josephson coupling. Close to t…
A simple analytical expression is presented for hysteretic ac loss $Q$ of a superconducting strip simultaneously exposed to an ac transport current $I_0\cosωt$ and a phase-different ac magnetic field $H_0\cos(ωt+θ_0)$. On the basis of Bean's critical state model, we calculate $Q$ for small current amplitude $I_0\ll I_c$, for small magnetic field amplitude $H_0\ll I_c/2πa$, and for arbitrary phase difference $θ_0$, where $I_c$ is the critical current and $2a$ is the width of the strip. The resulting expression for $Q=Q(I_0,H_0,θ_0)$ is a simple biquadratic function of both $I_0$ and $H_0$, and …
We have studied supercurrent-assisted formation of the resistive state in nano-structured Nb and NbN superconducting films after absorption of a single photon. In amorphous narrow NbN strips the probability of the resistive state formation has a pronounced spectral cut-off. The corresponding threshold photon energy decreases with the bias current. Analysis of the experimental data in the framework of the generalized hot-spot model suggests that the quantum yield for near-infrared photons increases faster than the photon nergy. Relaxation of the resistive state depends on the photon energy maki…
A transport current distribution over a wide superconducting sheet is shown to strongly change in a presence of bulk magnetic screens of a soft magnet with a high permeability. Depending on the geometry, the effect may drastically suppress or protect the Meissner state of the sheet through the enhancement or suppression of the edge barrier critical current. The total transport current in the magnetically screened Meissner state is expected to compete with the critical current of the flux-filled sheet only for samples whose critical current is initially essentially controlled by the edge barrie…
In a very interesting recent Letter\cite{berg}, the authors suggested that a novel form of superconducting state is realized in La$_{2-x}$Ba$_x$CuO$_4$ with $x$ close to 1/8. This suggestion was based on experiments\cite{li} on this compound which found predominantly two-dimensional (2D) characters of the superconducting state, with extremely weak interplane coupling. Later this specific form of superconducting state was termed striped superconductors\cite{berg08}. The purpose of this note is to point out that the suggested form\cite{berg} of the superconducting order parameter can be detected…
As an example for a seemingly simple but actually intricate problem, the Bean critical state is studied in a superconducting strip of finite thickness d and width 2w >> d placed in an oblique magnetic field. The analytical solution is obtained to leading order in the small parameter d/w. The critical state depends on how the applied magnetic field is switched on, e.g., at constant tilt angle, or first the perpendicular and then the parallel field component. For these two basic scenarios the distributions of current density and magnetic field are obtained in the critical states. In particular, …
The flux penetration near a semicircular indentation at the edge of a thin superconducting strip placed in a transverse magnetic field is investigated. The flux front distortion due to the indentation is calculated numerically by solving the Maxwell equations with a highly nonlinear $E(j)$ law. We find that the excess penetration, $Δ$, can be significantly ($\sim$ 50%) larger than the indentation radius $r_0$, in contrast to a bulk supercondutor in the critical state where $Δ=r_0$. It is also shown that the flux creep tends to smoothen the flux front, i.e. reduce $Δ$. The results are in very g…
Planar superconducting microwave resonators are key elements in a variety of technical applications and also act as sensitive probes for microwave spectroscopy of various materials of interest. Here superconducting Pb is a suitable material as a basis for microwave stripline resonators. To utilize Pb stripline resonators in a variable magnetic field (e.g. in ESR), the electrodynamics of such resonators in finite magnetic field has to be well understood. Therefore we performed microwave transmission measurements on superconducting Pb stripline resonators in a variable, parallel magnetic field. …
Analytical investigations of the critical state are carried out for a superconducting stripline consisting of two individual coplanar strips with an arbitrary distance between them. Two different cases are considered: a stripline with transport current and strips exposed to a perpendicular magnetic field. In the second case, the obtained solutions correspond to "fieldlike" (for unclosed strips) and "currentlike" (for a long rectangular superconducting loop) states in an isolated strip to which both a transport current and a magnetic field are applied with constant ratio.
Holes doped into the CuO2 planes of cuprate parent compounds frustrate the antiferromagnetic order. The development of spin and charge stripes provides a compromise between the competing magnetic and kinetic energies. Static stripe order has been observed only in certain particular compounds, but there are signatures which suggest that dynamic stripe correlations are common in the cuprates. Though stripe order is bad for superconducting phase coherence, stripes are compatible with strong pairing. Ironically, magnetic-field-induced stripe order appears to enhance the stability of superconductin…
The case of ac transport at in-phase alternating applied magnetic fields for a superconducting rectangular strip with finite thickness has been investigated. The applied magnetic field is considered perpendicular to the current flow. We present numerical calculations assuming the critical state model of the current distribution and ac loss for various values of aspect ratio, transport current and applied field amplitude. A rich phenomenology is obtained due to the metastable nature of the critical state. We perform a detailed comparison with the analytical limits and we discuss their applicabi…
The critical current of a thin superconducting strip of width $W$ much larger than the Ginzburg-Landau coherence length $ξ$ but much smaller than the Pearl length $Λ= 2 λ^2/d$ is maximized when the strip is straight with defect-free edges. When a perpendicular magnetic field is applied to a long straight strip, the critical current initially decreases linearly with $H$ but then decreases more slowly with $H$ when vortices or antivortices are forced into the strip. However, in a superconducting strip containing sharp 90-degree or 180-degree turns, the zero-field critical current at H=0 is reduc…
We theoretically study magnetic response of a superconductor/ferromagnet/normal-metal (SFN) strip in an in-plane Fulde--Ferrell (FF) state. We show that unlike to ordinary superconducting strip the FF strip can be switched from diamagnetic to paramagnetic and then back to diamagnetic state by {\it increasing} the perpendicular magnetic field. Being in paramagnetic state FF strip exhibits magnetic field driven second order phase transition from FF state to the ordinary state without spatial modulation along the strip. We argue that the global paramagnetic response is connected with peculiar dep…
A vortex crossing a thin-film superconducting strip from one edge to the other, perpendicular to the bias current, is the dominant mechanism of dissipation for films of thickness d on the order of the coherence length XI; and of width w much narrower than the Pearl length LAMBDA >> w >> XI. At high bias currents, I* < I < Ic, the heat released by the crossing of a single vortex suffices to create a belt-like normal-state region across the strip, resulting in a detectable voltage pulse. Here Ic is the critical current at which the energy barrier vanishes for a single vortex crossing. The belt f…
The case of a hard type II superconductor in the form of strip with elliptic cross-section when placed in transverse magnetic field is studied. We approach the problem in two steps, both based on the critical-state model. First we calculate numerically the penetrated current profiles that ensure complete shielding in the interior, without assuming an a priori form for the profiles. In the second step we introduce an analytical approximation that asumes that the current profiles are ellipses. Expressions linking the sample magnetization to the applied field are derived covering the whole range …
On the basis of the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equation we studied the dynamics of the superconducting condensate in a wide two-dimensional sample in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field and applied current. We could identify two critical currents: the current at which the pure superconducting state becomes unstable ($J_{c2}$ \cite{self1}) and the current at which the system transits from the resistive state to the superconducting state ($J_{c1}<J_{c2}$). The current $J_{c2}$ decreases monotonically with external magnetic field, while $J_{c1}$ exhibits a maximum at $H^*$. For suf…
The critical-state in a thin strip of YBaCuO is studied by magneto-optical imaging. The distribution of magnetic flux density is shown to have a specific symmetry in the remanent state after a large applied field. The symmetry was predicted [PRL 82, 2947 (1999)] for any Jc(B), and is therefore suggested as a simple tool to verify the applicability of the critical-state model. At large temperatures we find deviations from this symmetry, which demonstrates departure from the critical-state behavior. The observed deviations can be attributed to an explicit coordinate dependence of $j_c$ since bot…
Using kinetic equation approach we study dynamics of electrons and phonons in current-carrying superconducting nanostrips after absorption of single photon of near-infrared or optical range. We find that the larger the ratio $C_e/C_{ph}|_{T_c}$ ($T_c$ is a critical temperature of superconductor, $C_e$ and $C_{ph}$ are specific heat capacities of electrons and phonons, respectively) the larger part of photon's energy goes to electrons, they become stronger heated and, hence, could thermalize faster during initial stage of hot spot formation. Thermalization time $τ_{th}$ could be less than one p…
We study the magnetic response of a superconducting double strip, i.e., two parallel coplanar thin strips of width $2w$, thickness $d \ll w$ and of infinite length, separated by a gap of width $2s$ and subject to a perpendicular magnetic field $H$. The magnetic properties of this system are governed by the presence of a geometric energy barrier for vortex penetration which we investigate as a function of applied field $H$ and gap parameter $s$. The new results deal with the case of a narrow gap $s \ll w$, where the field penetration from the inner edges is facilitated by large flux focusing. U…

Geometrical metastability, observed in superconducting type I tin flat strips, has been previously proposed as a principle for particle detection. The energy deposition of an incoming beta-particle induces the rupture of the metastability and consequently the penetration of multiquantum flux tubes into a superconducting tin strip. We present here the first absorption spectra from two beta sources, which demonstrate the linearity and energy-resolution of these detectors (presented at the 6th International Workshop on Low Temperature Detectors for Dark Matter and Neutrinos (LTD-6), Interlaken, S…
Spontaneous nucleation and the consequent penetration of vortices into thin superconducting films and wires, subjected to a magnetic field, can be considered as a nonlinear stage of primary instability of the current-carrying superconducting state. The development of the instability leads to the formation of a chain of vortices in strips and helicoidal vortex lines in wires. The boundary of instability was obtained analytically. The nonlinear stage was investigated by simulations of the time-dependent generalized Ginzburg-Landau equation.
Polarized inelastic neutron scattering experiments were performed to study magnetic excitations in the normal and superconducting phases of Co-underdoped BaFe$_2$As$_2$, which exhibits coexistence of antiferromagnetic order and superconductivity. In the normal state the antiferromagnetic order results in broadened spin gaps opening in all three spin directions that are reminiscent of the magnetic response in pure antiferromagnetic BaFe$_2$As$_2$. In particular longitudinal excitations exhibit a large gap. In the superconducting state we find two distinct resonance excitations, which both are a…
Recent experiments on the conductance of thin, narrow superconducting strips have found periodic fluctuations, as a function of the perpendicular magnetic field, with a period corresponding to approximately two flux quanta per strip area [A. Johansson et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 95}, 116805 (2005)]. We argue that the low-energy degrees of freedom responsible for dissipation correspond to vortex motion. Using vortex/charge duality, we show that the superconducting strip behaves as the dual of a quantum dot, with the vortices, magnetic field, and bias current respectively playing the roles of …
Controlling lattice complexity or inhomogeneity of the doped oxide superconductors is shown to be a key term for control of the superconductivity critical temperature. All high temperature superconductors show anisotropic gaps and/or multi-gap superconductivity in the clean limit. They show the shape resonance in superconducting gaps that is a type of Fano resonance driven by the Josephson-like term for pairs transfer. These resonances occur where one of the multiple Fermi surface spots is near a 2.5 Lifshitz transition. The Fano antiresonance occurs between a BCS condensate and a BEC-like con…
