High-resolution radio observations of nearby starburst galaxies have shown that the distribution of their radio emission consists of a compact (<150 pc), high surface brightness, central radio source immersed in a low surface brightness circumnuclear halo. This radio structure is similar to that detected in bright Seyferts galaxies like NGC 7469 or Mrk 331, which display clear circumnuclear rings. While the compact, centrally located radio emission in these starbursts might be generated by a point-like source (AGN), or by the combined effect of multiple radio supernovae and supernova remnants (e.g., the evolved nuclear starburst in Arp~220), it seems well established that the circumnuclear regions of those objects host an ongoing burst of star-formation (e.g., NGC 7469; Colina et al. 2001, Alberdi et al. 2006). Therefore, high-resolution radio observations of Luminous Infra-Red Galaxies (LIRGs) in our local universe are a powerful tool to probe the dominant dust heating mechanism in their nuclear and circumnuclear regions.
In this contribution, we show results obtained from VLA-A, MERLIN, and EVN (VLBI) radio observations of the galaxies NGC 7469 (D~70 Mpc) and IRAS 18293-3413 (D ~ 79 Mpc), where two extremely bright radio supernovae have been found. High-resolution studies of these and other LIRGs would allow us to determine the core-collapse supernova rate in them, as well as their star-formation rate.
We investigated the correlation between nuclear/circumnuclear starbursts around the active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and the AGN activities for 43 Seyfert galaxies in the CfA and 12 micron samples. We found that circumnuclear starburst luminosity as well as nuclear starburst luminosity are positively correlated with AGN luminosity. Moreover, nuclear starburst luminosity is more strongly correlated with the AGN luminosity normalized with AGN Eddington luminosity than is circumnuclear starburst luminosity. This implies that starbursts nearer the AGN could have a greater effect on AGN mass accretion…
We consider the radiation-hydrodynamical formation of a dusty wall in the circumnuclear regions of the Circinus Seyfert 2 galaxy. We focus on the radiative flux force due to the circumnuclear starburst, the nuclear starburst and the active galactic nucleus (AGN), and analyze the equilibrium configuration and stability of the dusty gas in the circumnuclear regions. The mass distributions used to model the gravitational fields are determined by the observed rotation velocities of the stars and of the gas. Moreover, by using the simple stellar evolution in the circumnuclear starburst, the bolomet…
By considering the radiative force by a circumnuclear starburst as well as an AGN, we analyze the equilibrium configuration and the stability of dusty gas in the circumnuclear regions. It is found that the radiative force by an intensive starburst can support a stable gaseous wall with a scale-height of several hundred parsecs. Moreover, by taking the simple stellar evolution in the starburst into account, we find that the covering factor of the wall decreases on a time-scale of several $10^7$ yr. The large-scale wall, if formed, works to obscure the nucleus due to the dust opacity. Hence, it …
In this paper, we present our preliminary results on Seyfert galaxies with circumnuclear/nuclear starburst(SB) activity. We have searched the recent available literature and found 76 active galaxies with clear evidence of nuclear SB activity, among which 16 are Seyfert 1s, 51 Seyfert 2s, and 9 LINERs. After studying the 51 Seyfert 2s, we find that those Seyfert 2s with hidden Seyfert 1 nuclei, have similar Infrared-Radio properties as Seyfert 1 galaxies, and are different from "real" Seyfert 2s without a hidden Seyfert 1 nucleus. The later are similar to starburst galaxies.
We explore the formation of dusty gas walls induced by a circumnuclear starburst around an AGN. We concentrate our attention on the role of the radiation force by a starburst as well as an AGN, where the effects of optical depth of dusty gas are taken into consideration. In two-dimensional axisymmetric space, we analyze the configuration and the stability of geometrically thin walls which are in balance between radiation pressure and gravity. As a result, it is shown that the radiation force by the circumnuclear starburst works to stabilize optically thick walls surrounding the nucleus. In the…
For a sample of ten nearby barred galaxies, images at 6.75\um and 15\um of circumnuclear starbursts are being taken by ISOCAM on board of the ISO satellite. We first recall the main goals of our project, give its current status, and finally, as an example, preliminary results for NGC 4321 (M100) are presented.
We examine the radiatively driven mass accretion onto galactic nuclei due to the intensive radiation from circumnuclear starbursts. The radiation from a starburst not only contracts an inner gas disk by the radiation flux force, but also extracts angular momenta due to the relativistic radiation drag, thereby inducing an avalanche of the surface layer of disk. The present radiatively driven mass accretion may provide a physical mechanism which enables mass accretion from 100 pc scales down to pc, and it can eventually link to an advection-dominated viscous accretion onto a massive black hole. …
Galaxy interactions are studied in terms of the starburst-Seyfert connection. The starburst requires a high rate of gas supply. Since the efficiency for supplying the gas is high in a galaxy interaction, although the companion is not necessarily discernible, Seyfert galaxies with circumnuclear starbursts are expected to be interacting. Since the large amounts of circumnuclear gas and dust obscure the broad-line region, they are expected to be observed as Seyfert 2. The active galactic nucleus itself does not require a high rate of gas supply. Seyfert galaxies without circumnuclear starbursts a…
I discuss new observations of circumnuclear regions in barred galaxies, both of their kinematics and their near-infrared (NIR) morphology. New kinematic observations of M100 confirm that (1) the inner bar-like feature detected before in this galaxy is in fact a continuation of the large-scale stellar bar; and (2) the spiral arm-like sites of star formation in the circumnuclear zone are manifestations of density wave spiral structure in the core of this galaxy. From a NIR study of similar regions in other barred galaxies, I find that in many of these regions, sites of star formation are visible…
We examine the possibility of the active galactic nucleus (AGN) obscuration by dusty gas clouds that spurt out from circumnuclear starburst regions. For the purpose, the dynamical evolution of gas clouds is pursued, including the effects of radiation forces by an AGN as well as a starburst. Here, we solve the radiative transfer equations for clouds, taking into consideration the growth of clouds by inelastic cloud-cloud collisions and the resultant change in optical depth. As a result, it is shown that if the starburst is more luminous than the AGN, gas clouds are distributed extensively above…
We have obtained adaptive optics, high spatial resolution (0.15 arcsecond) K-band spectra and images of the region around the two active nuclei in NGC 6240 which show the presence of circumnuclear shocks. The data are consistent with the thermal excitation mechanism being the dominant one in the nuclear region. UV fluorescence and associative detachment may also contribute to the fraction of the energy emitted through molecular hydrogen transitions. The near-IR continuum emission appears closely associated with the two active nuclei. The morphological similarities between the near-IR images an…
We compare the arcsecond-scale circumnuclear radio continuum properties between five Seyfert and five starburst galaxies, concentrating on the search for any structures that could imply a spatial or causal connection between the nuclear activity and a circumnuclear starburst ring. No evidence is found in the radio emission for a link between the triggering or feeding of nuclear activity and the properties of circumnuclear star formation. Conversely, there is no clear evidence of nuclear outflows or jets triggering activity in the circumnuclear rings of star formation. Interestingly, the differ…
Recently Umemura, Fukue, & Mineshige (1997) proposed the radiative avalanche fueling to active galactic nuclei; gas accretion is driven by radiation drag exerted by stellar radiation from circumnuclear starburst regions. This mechanism is also interesting in terms of starburst-AGN connections. We therefore present observational tests for the radiative avalanche fueling. Our tests, however, show that gas accretion rates driven by the radiative avalanche are significantly lower than those expected from the standard accretion theory applied for typical active galactic nuclei with the circumnuclea…
We have found four barred S0 galaxies -- NGC 936, NGC 3945, NGC 4340, and NGC 4371 -- which contain smooth, luminous, purely stellar nuclear rings within their bars. These rings have little or no dust, no evidence for recent star formation, and are approximately the same color as surrounding bar and bulge. Thus, they are probably the aged remnants of bar-driven circumnuclear starburst episodes similar to those seen in barred galaxies today. Using kinematic data from long-slit spectroscopy, we construct rotation and resonance curves for two of the galaxies. In both cases, the nuclear rings appe…
The Seyfert galaxy NGC 1097 has an extended neutral hydrogen disk, a companion, a prominent bar and a luminous circumnuclear starburst "ring". Magnetic fields as revealed by nonthermal radio-continuum emissions correlate well with the optical barred spiral structure on large scales, have a gross enhancement overlapping with the optical/infrared "ring", and show a trailing swirl around and within the "ring". We propose a scenario of bar-excited long-trailing fast magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) density waves at the modified inner Lindblad resonance (mILR), physically identified with the outer rim of …
We invoke star formation triggered by cloud-cloud collisions to explain global star formation rates of disk galaxies and circumnuclear starbursts. Previous theories based on the growth rate of gravitational perturbations ignore the dynamically important presence of magnetic fields. Theories based on triggering by spiral density waves fail to explain star formation in systems without such waves. Furthermore, observations suggest gas and stellar disk instabilities are decoupled. Following Gammie, Ostriker & Jog (1991), the cloud collision rate is set by the shear velocity of encounters with init…
We present an emission-line diagnostic analysis of integral-field spectroscopic observations that cover the central kiloparsec of NGC 7742. This Sa galaxy hosts a spectacular nuclear starburst ring and nuclear regions characterized by low-ionization emission. The gas in the ring rotates in the opposite sense to the stars in the galaxy, suggesting a recent merging or acquisition event. The combination of integral-field measurements for the H-alpha + [NII] emission lines from DensePak and the H-beta and [OIII] emission from Sauron allow the construction of diagnostic diagrams that highlight the …
We report a radio detection of supernova SN 2004ip in the circumnuclear region of the luminous infrared galaxy IRAS 18293-3413, using Very Large Array (VLA) observations at 8.4 GHz on 11 June 2007. SN 2004ip had been previously discovered at near-infrared wavelengths using adaptive optics observations, but its nature (core-collapse or thermonuclear) could not be definitely established. Our radio detection, about three years after the explosion of the supernova, indicates a prominent interaction of the ejecta of SN 2004ip with the circumstellar medium, confirming that the supernova was a core-c…
SN 2000ft is detected in two independent Planetary Camera images (F547W and F814W) taken May 13, 2000, about two months before the predicted date of the explosion (July 19, 2000), based on the analysis of its radio light evolution by Alberdi and collaborators. The apparent optical magnitudes and red color of SN 2000ft indicate that it is observed through an extinction of at least A$_V$= 3.0 magnitudes. The extinction corrected lower limit to the absolute visual magnitude (M$_V$ $\leq -$ 18.0), identifies SN 2000ft as a luminous supernova in the optical, as other luminous radio supernovae befor…
This paper presents the first high-resolution SiO map made in an external galaxy. The nucleus of the nearby barred spiral NGC253 has been observed simultaneously in the v=0, J=2-1 line of SiO and in the J=1-0 line of H13CO+ with the IRAM interferometer, with a resolution of 7.5"x2.6". Emission from SiO and H13CO+ is extended in the nucleus of NGC253. The bulk of the SiO/H13CO+ emission arises from a 600pcx250pc circumnuclear disk (CND) with a double ringed structure. The inner ring, of radius r=60pc, viewed edge-on along PA=51deg, hosts the nuclear starburst; the outer pseudo-ring opens out as…
We report the discovery of a starburst-driven wind (superwind) from the starburst nucleus galaxy Mrk 1259. The estimated number ratio of Wolf-Rayet (WR) to O stars amounts to ~0.09. While the nuclear emission-line region is due to usual photoionization by massive stars, the circumnuclear emission-line regions show anomalous line ratios that can be due to cooling shocks. Since the host galaxy seems to be a face-on disk galaxy and the excitation conditions of the circumnuclear emission-line regions show the spatial symmetry, we consider that we are seeing the superwind nearly from a pole-on view…
We have mapped the central region of NGC 4945 in the $J=2\to1$ transition of $^{12}$CO, $^{13}$CO, and C$^{18}$O, as well as the continuum at 1.3 mm, at an angular resolution of $5\farc \times 3\farc$ with the Submillimeter Array. The relative proximity of NGC 4945 (distance of only 3.8 Mpc) permits a detailed study of the circumnuclear molecular gas and dust in a galaxy exhibiting both an AGN (classified as a Seyfert 2) and a circumnuclear starburst in an inclined ring with radius $\sim$2\farcs5 ($\sim$50 pc). We find that all three molecular lines trace an inclined rotating disk with major a…
A summary of starburst luminosities based on PAH features is given for 243 starburst galaxies with 0 < z < 2.5, observed with the Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph. Luminosity vLv(7.7um) for the peak luminosity of the 7.7um PAH emission feature is found to scale as log[vLv(7.7um)] = 44.63(+-0.09) + 2.48(+-0.28)log(1+z) for the most luminous starbursts observed. Empirical calibrations of vLv(7.7um) are used to determine bolometric luminosity Lir and the star formation rate (SFR) for these starbursts. The most luminous starbursts found in this sample have log Lir = 45.4(+-0.3) + 2.5(+-0.3)log(1+z), …
We present broad-band (U, V, I,and H) and narrow-band(H-alpha+[N II] and Paschen-alpha) images of the circumnuclear starburst rings in two nearby spiral galaxies, NGC 1512 and NGC 5248, obtained with WFPC2 and NICMOS on HST. Combined with HST images at 2300 Ang, these data provide a particularly wide wavelength range with which to study the properties of the stellar populations, the gas, and the dust in the rings. Some large (50-pc scale) line emitting regions have little associated continuum emission, but a Pa equivalent width indicating a few-Myr-old embedded stellar population. The Ha/Pa in…
We present high spatial resolution near-infrared broad-band JHK and Br_gamma 2.166 micron and H_2 1-0 S(1) 2.121 micron emission line images of the circumnuclear star formation rings in the LINER/Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 1097 and the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 6574. We investigate the morphology, extinction, and the star formation properties and history of the rings, by comparing the observed properties with an evolutionary population synthesis model. The clumpy morphology in both galaxies varies strongly with wavelength, due to a combination of extinction, hot dust and red supergiants, and the age of t…
We present UV (2300 Ang) images, obtained with the HST Faint Object Camera, of the central 20'' of five galaxies containing circumnuclear star-forming rings. The five galaxies are from a well-defined sample of 103 normal, nearby galaxies we have observed with HST. At the HST resolution (0.05''), the rings break up into discrete star-forming clumps, each composed of many luminous and compact ($R \ltorder 5$ pc) star clusters. These objects are similar to those that have been recently reported in colliding and starburst galaxies, and in several other circumnuclear rings. A large fraction, 15%--5…
The central 2x1 kpc of the starburst galaxy NGC 253 has been imaged using the Submillimeter Array at a 60 pc resolution in the J=2-1 transitions of 12CO, 13CO, and C18O as well as in the 1.3 mm continuum. Molecular gas and dust are mainly in the circumnuclear disk of ~500 pc radius, with warm (~40 K) and high area-filling factor gas in its central part. Two gas shells or cavities have been discovered in the circumnuclear disk. They have ~100 pc diameters and have large velocity widths of 80-100 km/s, suggestive of expansion at ~50 km/s. Modeled as an expanding bubble, each shell has an age of …
Through observations and modeling, we demonstrate how the recently discovered large-scale bar in NGC 5248 generates spiral structure which extends from 10 kpc down to 100 pc, fuels star formation on progressively smaller scales, and drives disk evolution. Deep inside the bar, two massive molecular spirals cover nearly 180 degrees in azimuth, show streaming motions of 20--40 km/s and feed a starburst ring of super star clusters at 375 pc. They also connect to two narrow K-band spirals which delineate the UV-bright star clusters in the ring. The data suggest that the K-band spirals are young, an…
Far-infrared flux densities are newly extracted from the IRAS database for the RSA and CfA complete samples of Seyfert galaxies. These data are used to classify the Seyfert galaxies into those where the far-infrared continuum emission is dominated by the active galactic nucleus (AGN), circumnuclear starburst, or host galaxy. While AGN-dominant objects consist of comparable numbers of Seyfert 1 and 2 galaxies, starburst- and host-dominant objects consist preferentially of Seyfert 2 galaxies. Thus, in addition to the dusty torus, the circumnuclear starburst region and host galaxy are important i…
Analysing mid--infrared ISOCAM images of the cluster of galaxies J1888.16CL, we identified among its members several particularly active galaxies with total infrared luminosities well above 10^{11} Lsun. If powered by dust enshrouded starbursts, as suggested by their optical spectra, these Luminous Infrared Galaxies would exhibit star formation rates surprisingly high in the cluster environment. The triggering mechanism is unclear but could be tidal collisions within sub-structures or infalling groups.
It is known that the class of luminous starburst galaxies tends to have higher $R =^{12}CO(J=1--0)/^{13}CO(J=1--0)$ integrated line intensity ratios ($R>20$) than normal spiral galaxies ($R \sim 10$). Since most previous studies investigated only $R$, it remains uncertain whether the luminous starburst galaxies are overabundant in $^{12}$CO or underabundant in $^{13}$CO. Here we propose a new observational test to examine this problem. Our new test is to compare far-infrared luminosities [$L$(FIR)] with those of $^{12}$CO and $^{13}CO [L(^{12}CO)$ and $L(^{13}CO)$, respectively]. It is shown t…
We present HST (WFPC2 and FOC) images and UV GHRS spectra plus ground-based optical spectra of four Luminous Infrared Galaxies (LIRGs) that have Seyfert 2 nuclei (Mrk 477, NGC 7130, NGC 5135 and IC 3639). The data provide direct evidence of the existence of a central nuclear starburst that dominates the UV and optical light and are dusty and compact. The bolometric luminosity of 10$^{10}$ Lsol of these starbursts is similar to the estimated bolometric luminosities of their obscured Seyfert 1 nuclei, and thus they contribute in the same amount to the overall energetics of these galaxies. An ext…
We compare the circumnuclear stellar population and environmental properies of Seyfert and Composite (Seyfert + Starburst) nuclei with those of LINERs and LINER/HII transition galaxies (TOs), and discuss evidences for evolution from Seyfert/Composite to LINER/TO nuclei.
In order to understand what controls the star formation process in luminous starburst mergers (e.g., NGC 6240, Arp 220, and so on), we investigate observational properties of two samples of high-luminosity starburst galaxies mapped in CO($J$=1--0) independently using both the Owens Valley Radio Observatory (Scoville et al. 1991) and the IRAM interferometer (Downes & Solomon 1998). We find that the surface density of far-infrared luminosity, $Σ$(FIR), is proportional linearly to the H$_2$ surface mass density, $Σ$(H$_2$), for the two samples; $Σ$(FIR) $\propto Σ$(H$_2$)$^{1.01\pm0.06}$ with a c…
We present ISOCAM images (1.5"/px) in the LW2 (6.75 microns) and LW3 (15 microns) broad band filters of the circumnuclear starburst of NGC 4321 (M 100). A detailed comparison with the emission at other wavelengths (U, B, Halpha, and CO) is also presented. The nature and intensity of the mid-infrared emission is shown to be remarkably different from one star forming region to the next. For instance, star forming regions at the ends of the nuclear bar may contain enshrouded Wolf-Rayet stars.
The strongest starbursts are observed towards galaxy nuclei, or circumnuclear regions. However in interacting galaxies, star formation is also triggered in overlap regions far from nuclei, in spiral arms and sometimes in tidal tails. What is the relative importance of these starbursts? What kind of starformation is dominating, as a function of redshift? These different starbursts occur in different dynamical conditions (global and local): gravitational instabilities, density waves, radial flows, shear, cloud collisions, density accumulations, and they have been investigated with the help of nu…
The ubiquitous and tight correlation between the radio continuum emission and the far-infrared emission is also found to hold true for starburst galaxies and Ultra Luminous Infrared Galaxies wherein most of the emission is from compact structures. The infrared photon density in the cores is high enough for the inverse Compton scattering to dominate over the synchrotron emission thus spoiling the correlation. The high magnetic field postulated to avoid this, also encounters the problem of steep radio index that is not observed. Further, at high densities the flux of secondary electrons can exce…
It is known that merging galaxies with luminous starbursts and high far-infrared luminosities tend to have higher $R_{1-0} =^{12}CO(J=1-0)/^{13}CO(J=1-0)$ integrated line intensity ratios ($R_{1-0} \simeq 20-50$) than normal spiral galaxies ($R_{1-0} \simeq 5-15$). Comparing far-infrared luminosities [L(FIR)] with those of ^{12}CO(J=1-0) and ^{13}CO(J=1-0) for a sample of normal and starburst galaxies, Taniguchi & Ohyama found that the observed high $R_{1-0}$ values for the luminous starburst mergers are attributed to their lower ^{13}CO line intensities by a factor of 3 on the average. They s…
We have conducted a spectroscopic survey of 78 starbursting infrared-luminous galaxies at redshifts up to z = 0.5. We use moderate-resolution spectroscopy of the NaI D interstellar absorption feature to directly probe the neutral phase of outflowing gas in these galaxies. Over half of our sample are ultraluminous infrared galaxies that are classified as starbursts; the rest have infrared luminosities in the range log(L_IR/L_sun) = 10.2 - 12.0. The sample selection, observations, and data reduction are described here. The absorption-line spectra of each galaxy are presented. We also discuss the…
We present first results of our on-going BIMA Key Project: imaging the CO(1-0) emission from a sample of 10 luminous IR galaxies (LIRGs) that are at various merging stages, with special emphasis on systems apparently in the early/intermediate stages of merging. We present here CO images with $\sim 5''$ resolution. An important result is the recognition of a plausible pre-starburst phase in some early LIRG mergers (e.g., Arp 302 and NGC 6670). Our initial analysis suggests that a merger-induced starburst phase may not begin before the nuclear separation between the merging galaxies reaches roug…
Nuclear stellar clusters are a common phenomenon in spirals and in starbursts galaxies, and they may be a natural consequence of the star formation processes in the central regions of galaxies. HST UV imaging of a few Seyfert 2 galaxies have resolved nuclear starbursts in Seyfert 2 revealing stellar clusters as the main building blocks of the extended emission. However, we do not know whether stellar clusters are always associated with all types of nuclear activity. We present NUV and optical images provided by HST to find out the role that stellar clusters play in different types of AGNs (Sey…
We have initiated the first CO interferometer survey of early-type spiral galaxies (S0-Sab). We observed five early-type spiral galaxies with HII nuclei (indicating circumnuclear starburst activities). These observations indicate gas masses for the central kiloparsec of \sim 1-5% of the dynamical masses. Such low gas mass fractions suggest that large-scale gravitational instability in the gas is unlikely to be the driving cause for the starburst activities. The Toomre Q values were >1 (mostly >3) within the central kiloparsec, indicating that the gas disks are globally gravitationally stable. …
We present observations of the massive transitional star W243 in Westerlund 1. We find an apparent spectral type of early-mid A from our data, in contrast to an earlier classification of B2I, made from data obtained in 1981. The concurrent development of a rich emission line spectrum suggests a very high mass loss rate; the continued presence of HeI emission suggesting that the underlying star remains significantly hotter than implied by its apparent spectral type. We suggest that W243 is a Luminous Blue Variable undergoing an eruptive phase, leading to an extreme mass loss rate and the format…
Observations at ultraviolet, optical and near-infrared wavelengths have shown the existence of recent star formation in the nuclear regions of Seyfert 2 (Sy2) galaxies that suggest a connection between the Starburst and the Seyfert phenomenon. According with the standard unified models of AGN circumnuclear starbursts also have to be present (and in the same numbers) in Sy1 as in Sy2 galaxies. This review discuss evidence in favor of the Starburst-AGN connection, as well as possible differences in terms of star formation activity between Sy1 and Sy2, that suggest an alternative interpretation o…
Most luminous infrared galaxies (LIGs) are closely interacting/merging systems rich in molecular gas. We study here the relationship between the stage of the galaxy-galaxy interactions, the molecular gas mass, and the star formation rate as deduced from the infrared luminosity L_IR in LIGs. We find a correlation between the CO(1-0) luminosity (a measure of molecular mass M(H_2)) and the projected separation of merger nuclei (indicator of merging stages) in a sample of 50 LIG mergers, which shows that the molecular gas content decreases as merging advances. The starburst is due to enhanced star…
Only two of the twenty highly luminous starburst galaxies analyzed by Smith et al. exhibit circumnuclear rings of star formation. These galaxies provide a link between 10^11 L_sun systems and classical, less-luminous ringed systems. We report the discovery of a near-infrared counterpart to the nuclear ring of radio emission in NGC 7771. A displacement between the ~10 radio bright clumps and the ~10 near-infrared bright clumps indicates the presence of multiple generations of star formation. The estimated thermal emission from each radio source is equivalent to that of ~35000 O6 stars. Each nea…
Arp 302, a luminous infrared source (L_{IR} = 4.2x10^{11} Lsun), consisting of two spiral galaxies (VV340A and VV340B) with nuclear separation of 40'', has the highest CO luminosity known. Observations with the BIMA array at 5'' X 7'' resolution reveal that the CO emission is extended over 23.0 kpc in the edge-on spiral galaxy, VV340A, corresponding to 6.7x10^{10} Msun of H_2. In the companion face-on galaxy, VV340B, the CO emission is extended over ~10.0 kpc, with 1.1x10^{10} Msun of H_2. The large CO extent is in strong contrast to starburst systems, such as Arp 220, in which the CO extent i…
We present an X-ray spectral study of the prototype far-infrared galaxy NGC6240 from ASCA. The soft X-ray spectrum (below 2 keV) shows clear signatures of thermal emission well described with a multi-temperature optically-thin plasma, which probably originates in a powerful starburst. Strong hard X-ray emission is also detected with ASCA and its spectrum above 3 keV is extremely flat with a prominent iron K line complex, very similar to that seen in the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC1068 but about an order of magnitude more luminous [L(3-10keV)=1.4E42 erg/s]. The hard X-ray spectrum indicates that only …
Observations for seven infrared luminous starburst galaxies are reported in the mid-infrared from 8 - 18 microns using the Keck Telescopes with spatial resolution approaching the diffraction limit. All of the galaxies observed show evidence of strong interactions based on optical morphologies. For these galaxies, a substantial fraction, usually more than 50%, of the infrared luminosity is generated in regions ranging in sizes from 100pc -- 1 Kpc. Nuclear starbursts often dominate the infrared luminosity, but this is not always true. In some galaxies, most notably NGC 6090, substantial infrared…
We report a supernova discovery in Ks-band images from the NAOS CONICA adaptive optics (AO) system on the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT). The images were obtained as part of a near-infrared search for highly-obscured supernovae in the nuclear regions of luminous and ultraluminous infrared galaxies. SN 2004ip is located within a circumnuclear starburst at 1.4 arcsec (or 500 pc) projected distance from the K-band nucleus of the luminous infrared galaxy IRAS 18293-3413. The supernova luminosity and light curve are consistent with a core-collapse event suffering from a host galaxy extinction of up…
We investigate the properties of dust and dust-to-gas ratios in different starburst regions of luminous infrared galaxies (LIGs). We refer to the sample of seven LIGs recently observed in the mid-infrared by Soifer et al. (2001) using the Keck telescopes with spatial resolution approaching the diffraction limit. These seven objects are among the closest LIGs and have been classified as starburst galaxies from optical spectroscopy. Our goal consists in modelling the continuum spectral energy distribution (SED) of each galaxy, particularly in the infrared range. Models are further constrained by…
Why are the nuclei of some galaxies more active than others? If most galaxies harbor a central massive black hole, the main difference is probably in how well it is fueled by its surroundings. We investigate the hypothesis that such a difference can be seen in the detailed circumnuclear morphologies of galaxies using several quantitatively defined features, including bars, isophotal twists, boxy and disky isophotes, and strong non-axisymmetric features in unsharp masked images. These diagnostics are applied to 250 high-resolution images of galaxy centers obtained in the near-infrared with NICM…
We investigate the relation between the characteristics of the circumnuclear stellar population and both the galaxy morphology and the presence of close companions for a sample of 35 Seyfert 2 nuclei. Fifteen galaxies present unambiguous signatures of recent episodes of star formation within $\approx$300 pc from the nucleus. When we relate this property with the Hubble type of the host galaxy, we find that the incidence of recent circumnuclear star formation increases along the Hubble sequence, and seems to be larger than in non-Seyfert galaxies for the early Hubble types S0 and Sa, but simila…
We have analyzed Chandra High Resolution Camera observations of the starburst galaxy M82, concentrating on the most luminous x-ray source. We find a position for the source of $\rm R.A. = 09^h 55^m 50^s.2, decl. = +69^{\circ} 40\arcmin 46\arcsec.7$ (J2000) with a $1σ$ radial error of $0.7\arcsec$. The accurate x-ray position shows that the luminous source is not at the dynamical centre of M82 nor coincident with any suggested radio AGN candidate. The source is highly variable between observations, which suggests that the source is a compact object and not a supernova or remnant. There is no si…
We study the mid-infrared properties of a sample of 69 nearby spiral galaxies, selected to avoid Seyfert activity contributing a significant fraction of the central energetics, or strong tidal interaction, and to have normal infrared luminosities. These observations were obtained with ISOCAM, which provides an angular resolution of the order of 10 arcsec (half-power diameter of the point spread function) and low-resolution spectro-imaging information. Between 5 and 18 microns, we mainly observe two dust phases, aromatic infrared bands and very small grains, both out of thermal equilibrium. On …
We investigate the star formation and dust extinction properties of very luminous infrared galaxies whose spectra display a strong Hdelta line in absorption and a moderate [OII] emission (e[a] spectrum). This spectral combination has been suggested to be a useful method to identify dusty starburst galaxies at any redshift on the basis of optical data alone. We compare the average e(a) optical spectrum with synthetic spectra that include both the stellar and the nebular contribution, allowing dust extinction to affect differentially the stellar populations of different ages. We find that reprod…
We present new mid-infrared (N-band) images of a sample of eight nearby Seyfert galaxies. In all of our targets, we detect a central unresolved source, which in some cases has been identified for the first time. In particular, we have detected the mid-infrared emission from the active nucleus of NGC 4945, which previously remained undetected at any wavelength but hard X-rays. We also detect circumnuclear extended emission in the Circinus galaxy along its major axis, and find marginal evidence for extended circumnuclear emission in NGC 3281. The high spatial resolution (1.7") of our data allows…
In a 52 ks-long Chandra ACIS-S observation of the nearby starburst galaxy NGC 3628, obtained to study the starburst-driven outflow from this galaxy, we have detected a very luminous (L_X = 1.1e40 erg/s in the 0.3-8.0 keV energy band) point source located at least 20 arcsec (~970 pc) from the nucleus of the galaxy. No radio, optical or near-IR counterpart to this source has been found. This is most probably the reappearance of the strongly-variable X-ray-luminous source discovered by Dahlem et al (1995), which faded by a factor >27 between December 1991 and March 1994 (at which point it had fad…
We investigate the relative importance of starbursts and AGN in nuclear activities of ultra-luminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) based on chemodynamical simulations combined with spectrophotometric synthesis codes. We numerically investigate both the gas accretion rates (m_acc) onto super massive black holes (SMBHs) and the star formation rates (m_sf) in ULIRGs formed by gas-rich galaxy mergers and thereby discuss what powers ULIRGs. Our principal results, which can be tested against observations, are as follows. (1) ULIRGs powered by AGN can be formed by major merging between luminous, gas-ric…
We present observations of radio recombination lines from the starburst galaxy Arp 220 at 1.4, 8.1, 84, 96 and 207 GHz (sensitive upper limit for the 1.4 GHz line and firm detections at the other frequencies), and the radio continuum spectrum between 330 MHz and 207 GHz. We show that a model with three components of ionized gas with different densities and area covering factors can consistently explain both RRL and continuum data. The total mass of ionized gas in the three components is 3 x 10^7 M_sun requiring 3 x 10^5 O5 stars with a total Lyman continuum production rate (NLyc) of 1.3 x 10^{…
