In this paper we review some properties for the evolving wormhole solution of Einstein equations coupled with nonlinear electrodynamics. We integrate the geodesic equations in the effective geometry obeyed by photons; we check out the weak field limit and find the traversability conditions. Then we analyze the case when the lagrangian depends on two electromagnetic invariants and it turns out that there is not a more general solution within the assumed geometry.
We explore the possibility of dynamic wormhole geometries, within the context of nonlinear electrodynamics. The Einstein field equation imposes a contracting wormhole solution and the obedience of the weak energy condition. Furthermore, in the presence of an electric field, the latter presents a singularity at the throat, however, for a pure magnetic field the solution is regular. Thus, taking into account the principle of finiteness, that a satisfactory theory should avoid physical quantities becoming infinite, one may rule out evolving wormhole solutions, in the presence of an electric field…
In this paper, we construct thin-shell wormholes by applying the cut and paste procedure to a regular charged black hole in nonlinear electrodynamics field. We discuss different physical aspects of wormholes such as, the possible equation of state to matter shell, attractive or repulsive nature of wormhole and total amount of exotic matter required. The thin-shell equation of motion with and without cosmological constant is also investigated under linearized perturbation. Finally, we explore the stability regions interpreted by the parameter $β$ (speed of sound) and conclude that there are rea…
Several traversable wormholes (T-WHs) of the Morris-Thorne type have been presented as exact solutions of Einstein-nonlinear electrodynamics gravity (GR-NLED), e.g. \cite{Arellano2009, Bronnikov2018,Bronnikov_Walia2021, Canate_Breton2018, Canate_Breton_Ortiz2020, Canate_Magos_Breton2020}. However, none of these solutions is support by a nonlinear electrodynamics model satisfying plausible conditions. In this work, we present the first traversable wormhole solution of Einstein-nonlinear electrodynamics gravity coupled to a self-interacting phantom scalar field (GR-NLED-SF) with a NLED model suc…
This paper explores the role of nonlinear electrodynamics on the stable configuration of thin-shell wormholes formulated from two equivalent geometries of Reissner-Nordström black hole with nonlinear electrodynamics. For this purpose, we use cut and paste approach to eliminate the central singularity and event horizons of the black hole geometry. Then, we explore the stability of the developed model by considering different types of matter distribution located at thin-shell, i.e., barotropic model and variable equations of state (phantomlike variable and Chaplygin variable models). We use line…
We present here analytical solutions of General Relativity that describe evolving wormholes with a non-constant redshift function. We show that the matter that threads these wormholes is not necessarily exotic. Finally, we investigate some issues concerning WEC violation and human traversability in these time-dependent geometries.
We present a novel, exact, traversable wormhole (T-WH) solution for $(3+1)$-dimensional Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet theory (EsGB) coupled to a power-Maxwell nonlinear electrodynamics (NLED). The solution is characterized by two parameters, $\mathcal{Q}\!_{\rm e}$ and $\mathcal{Q}\!_{_{ \mathcal{S} }}$, associated respectively with the electromagnetic field and the scalar field. We show that for $\mathcal{Q}^2_{\rm e} - \mathcal{Q}\!_{_{ \mathcal{S} }}>0$ the solution can be interpreted as a traversable wormhole. In the general case, with non-vanishing electromagnetic field, the scalar-Gauss-B…
In this paper we present two results in $(2+1)$ gravity coupled to nonlinear electrodynamics. First it is determined the general form of the electromagnetic field tensor in $(2+1)$ gravity coupled to nonlinear electrodynamics in stationary cyclic spacetimes. Secondly, it is determined a family of exact solutions in $(2+1)$ gravity sourced by a nonlinear electromagnetic field. The solutions are characterized by five parameters: mass $M$, angular momentum $J$, cosmological constant $Λ$ and two electromagnetic charges, $q_α$ and $q_β$. Remarkably, the solution can be interpreted as a traversable …
The paper deals with an extensive study of null and timelike geodesics in the background of wormhole geometries. Starting with a spherically symmetric spacetime, null geodesics are analyzed for the Morris-Thorne wormhole(WH) and photon spheres are examined in WH geometries. Both bounded and unbounded orbits are discussed for timelike geodesics. A similar analysis has been done for trajectories in a dynamic spherically symmetric WH and for a rotating WH. Finally, the invariant angle method of Rindler and Ishak has been used to calculate the angle between radial and tangential vectors at any poi…
We construct a static axisymmetric wormhole from the gravitational field of two charged shells which are kept in equilibrium by their electromagnetic repulsion. For large separations the exterior tends to the Majumdar-Papapetrou spacetime of two charged particles. The interior of the wormhole is a Reissner-Nordström black hole matching to the two shells. The wormhole is traversable and connects to the same asymptotics without violation of energy conditions. However, every point in the Majumdar-Papapetrou region lies on a closed timelike curve.
It was shown by Ford and Roman in 1996 that quantum field theory severely constrains wormhole geometries on a macroscopic scale. The first part of this paper discusses a wide class of wormhole solutions that meet these constraints. The type of shape function used is essentially generic. The constraints are then discussed in conjunction with various redshift functions. Violations of the weak energy condition and traversability criteria are also considered. The second part of the paper analyzes analogous time-dependent (dynamic) wormholes with the aid of differential forms. It is shown that a vi…
In this work, we explore the possibility that static and spherically symmetric traversable wormhole geometries are supported by modified teleparallel gravity or f(T) gravity, where T is the torsion scalar. Considering the field equations with an off-diagonal tetrad, a plethora of asymptotically flat exact solutions are found, that satisfy the weak and the null energy conditions throughout the spacetime. More specifically, considering T=0, we find the general conditions for a wormhole satisfying the energy conditions at the throat and present specific examples. Secondly, considering specific ch…
We consider spherically symmetric configurations in general relativity, supported by nonlinear electromagnetic fields with gauge-invariant Lagrangians depending on the single invariant $f = F_{μν} F^{μν}$. Static black hole and solitonic solutions are briefly described, both with only an electric or magnetic charge and with both nonzero charges (the dyonic ones). It is stressed that only pure magnetic solutions can be completely nonsingular. For dyonic systems, apart from a general scheme of obtaining solutions in quadratures for an arbitrary Lagrangian function $L(f)$, an analytic solution is…
We study wormhole solutions in the framework of f (R,T) gravity where R is the scalar curvature, and T is the trace of the stress-energy tensor of the matter. We have obtained the shape function of the wormhole by specifying an equation of state for the matter field and imposing the flaring out condition at the throat. We show that in this modified gravity scenario, the matter threading the wormhole may satisfy the energy conditions, so it is the effective stress-energy that is responsible for violation of the null energy condition.
This study explores the Gaussian and the Lorentzian distributed spherically symmetric wormhole solutions in the $f(τ, T)$ gravity. The basic idea of the Gaussian and Lorentzian noncommutative geometries emerges as the physically acceptable and substantial notion in quantum physics. This idea of the noncommutative geometries with both the Gaussian and Lorentzian distributions becomes more striking when wormhole geometries in the modified theories of gravity are discussed. Here we consider a linear model within $f(τ,T)$ gravity to investigate traversable wormholes. In particular, we discuss the …
We discuss several properties of static, spherically symmetric wormholes with particular emphasis on the behavior of causal geodesics and the propagation of linear fields. We show there always exist null geodesics which are trapped in a region close to the throat. Depending upon the detailed structure of the wormhole geometry, these trapped geodesics can be stable, unlike the case of the Schwarzschild black hole. We also show that test scalar fields propagating on such wormholes are stable. However, when a mixture of ghost and Klein-Gordon scalar fields is used as a source of the Einstein equa…
Following the recent theory of $f(Q)$ gravity, we continue to investigate the possible existence of wormhole geometries, where $Q$ is the non-metricity scalar. Recently, the non-metricity scalar and the corresponding field equations have been studied for some spherically symmetric configurations in [ Phys. Lett. B 821, 136612 (2021) and Phys. Rev. D 103, 124001 (2021) ]. One can note that field equations are different in these two studies. Following [Phys. Rev. D 103, 124001 (2021)], we systematically study the field equations for wormhole solutions and found the violation of null energy condi…
Exact solutions of traversable wormholes were recently found under the assumption of spherical symmetry and the existence of a non-static conformal symmetry. In this paper, we verify that in the case of the conformally symmetric spacetimes with a non-static vector field generating the symmetry, the conformal factor $ψ$ can be physically interpreted in terms of a measurable quantity, namely, the tangential velocity of a massive test particle moving in a stable circular orbit in the spacetime. Physical properties of the rotational velocity of test particles and of the redshift of radiation emitt…
We construct spherically symmetric thin-shell wormholes supported by a generalized Chaplygin gas in Born-Infeld electrodynamics coupled to Einstein gravity, and we analyze their stability under radial perturbations. For different values of the Born-Infeld parameter and the charge, we compare the results with those obtained in a previous work for Maxwell electrodynamics. The stability region in the parameter space reduces and then disappears as the value of the Born-Infeld parameter is modified in the sense of a larger departure from Maxwell theory.
Recently a bound on negative energy densities in four-dimensional Minkowski spacetime was derived for a minimally coupled, quantized, massless, scalar field in an arbitrary quantum state. The bound has the form of an uncertainty principle-type constraint on the magnitude and duration of the negative energy density seen by a timelike geodesic observer. When spacetime is curved and/or has boundaries, we argue that the bound should hold in regions small compared to the minimum local characteristic radius of curvature or the distance to any boundaries, since spacetime can be considered approximate…
Wormholes can be described as geometrical structures in space and time that can serve as connection between distant regions of the universe. Mathematically, general wormholes can be defined both on stationary as well as on dynamic line elements. However, general relativistic and evolving Lorentzian wormholes are less studied than their static wormhole counterpart. Accordingly, in this work we shall focus on some evolving wormhole geometries. Starting from a general class of spherically symmetric line element supporting wormhole geometries, we shall use the Einstein's field equations to develop…
In this work we explore the possible existence of static, spherically symmetric and stationary, axisymmetric traversable wormholes coupled to nonlinear electrodynamics. Considering static and spherically symmetric (2+1) and (3+1)-dimensional wormhole spacetimes, we verify the presence of an event horizon and the non-violation of the null energy condition at the throat. For the former spacetime, the principle of finiteness is imposed, in order to obtain regular physical fields at the throat. Next, we analyze the (2+1)-dimensional stationary and axisymmetric wormhole, and also verify the presenc…
Wormholes with Ellis geometry have been successfully constructed using tachyon matter \cite{Das}. However, for such a wormhole, it is obtained that the redshift function is necessarily a constant, and also the wormhole is plagued with an imaginary tachyon potential and a constant field if the solutions are obtained in the absence of a cosmological constant term. So, a physically plausible wormhole solution is possible only in the presence of a $Λ$ term. In this paper, we try to construct a wormhole from tachyon matter with three $other$ geometries \textit{different} from the Ellis geometry and…
Traversability in relation with tides across thin-shell wormholes is analyzed. Conditions for a safe travel through a wormhole throat are established in terms of the parameters characterizing the geometries and reasonable assumptions regarding the travellers motion. Most convenient geometries turn to include the physically interesting example of wormholes connecting locally flat submanifolds as those associated to gauge cosmic strings. A certain relaxation of the conditions imposed and the corresponding extension of the set of admissible configurations is also briefly discussed.
In this work, we explore the possibility of evolving (2+1) and (3+1)-dimensional wormhole spacetimes, conformally related to the respective static geometries, within the context of nonlinear electrodynamics. For the (3+1)-dimensional spacetime, it is found that the Einstein field equation imposes a contracting wormhole solution and the obedience of the weak energy condition. Nevertheless, in the presence of an electric field, the latter presents a singularity at the throat, however, for a pure magnetic field the solution is regular. For the (2+1)-dimensional case, it is also found that the phy…
We review recent work on wormhole geometries in the context of modified theories of gravity, in particular, in f(R) gravity and with a nonminimal curvature-matter coupling, and in the recently proposed hybrid metric-Palatini theory. In principle, the normal matter threading the throat can be shown to satisfy the energy conditions and it is the higher order curvatures terms that sustain these wormhole geometries. We also briefly review the conversion of wormholes into time-machines, explore several of the time travel paradoxes and possible remedies to these intriguing side-effects in wormhole p…
Traversability in relation with tides in thin-shell wormholes is revisited to investigate the possibility of improving recently noted restrictive conditions for a safe travel across a wormhole throat. We consider wormholes mathematically constructed starting from background geometries which are solutions of scalar-tensor theories as dilaton gravity and Brans--Dicke gravity. The advantages of working within such frameworks are studied by examining the dependence of the extrinsic curvature and tides at the throat with the parameters determining the departure from pure relativity; the associated …
We study the stability of different higher dimensional thin--shell wormholes (HDTSW) in general relativity with a cosmological constant. We show that a $d$--dimensional thin--shell wormhole surrounded by quintessence can have three different throat geometries: spherical, planar and hyperbolic. Unlike the spherical geometry, the planar and hyperbolic geometries allow different topologies that can be interpreted as higher-dimensional domain walls or branes connecting two universes. To construct these geometries, we use the cut-and-paste procedure by joining two identical vacuum spacetime solutio…
Generalizing of the Maxwell field to nonlinear electrodynamics theories, we look for the magnetic solutions. In initial approximation these models give the usual linear electrodynamics. We consider a suitable metric and investigate the properties of the solutions. Also, we use the cut-and-paste method to construct wormhole structure. We generalize the static solutions to rotating spacetime and obtain conserved quantities.
The current interests in the universe motivate us to go beyond Einstein's General theory of relativity. One of the interesting proposals comes from a new class of teleparallel gravity named symmetric teleparallel gravity, i.e., $f(Q)$ gravity, where the non-metricity term $Q$ is accountable for fundamental interaction. These alternative modified theories of gravity's vital role are to deal with the recent interests and to present a realistic cosmological model. This manuscript's main objective is to study the traversable wormhole geometries in $f(Q)$ gravity. We construct the wormhole geometri…
We present an analysis of the classic wormhole geometries based on conformal Weyl gravity, rather than standard general relativity. The main characteristics of the resulting traversable wormholes remain the same as in the seminal study by Morris and Thorne, namely, that effective super-luminal motion is a viable consequence of the metric. Improving on previous work on the subject, we show that for particular choices of the shape and redshift functions the wormhole metric in the context of conformal gravity does not violate the main energy conditions at or near the wormhole throat. Some exotic …
This article is based on the study of wormhole geometries in the context of symmetric teleparallel gravity or $f(Q)$ gravity, where $Q$ is the non-metricity scalar, and it is responsible for the gravitational interaction. To discuss the wormhole solutions, we consider spherically symmetric static spacetime metric with anisotropic matter contents under well-known non-commutative distributions known as Gaussian and Lorentzian distributions with an extra condition of permitting conformal killing vectors (CKV). This work aims to obtain wormhole solutions under these distributions, and through we f…
We consider $f(R, T)$ theory of gravity, in which the gravitational Lagrangian is given by an arbitrary function of the Ricci scalar and the trace of the energy-momentum tensor, to study static spherically symmetric wormhole geometries sustained by matter sources with isotropic pressure. According to restrictions on the wormhole geometries, we carefully adopt different strategies to construct solutions with the properties and characteristics of wormholes. Using a completely general procedure, we provide several examples of wormholes in which the matter threading the wormhole throat satisfies a…
In the present work we investigate wormhole configurations described by a constant redshift function in Einstein-Cubic gravity ({\sf ECG}). We derive analytical wormhole geometries by assuming a particular equation of state ({\sf EoS}) and investigate the possibility that these solutions satisfy the standard energy conditions. We introduce exact asymptotically flat and anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetimes that admit traversable wormholes. These solutions are obtained by imposing suitable values for the parameters of the theory so that the resulted geometries satisfy the weak energy condition ({\sf …
Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld gravity (EiBI) gravity is a recently proposed modified theory of gravity, based on the classic work of Eddington and on Born-Infeld nonlinear electrodynamics. In this paper, we consider the possibility that wormhole geometries are sustained in EiBI gravity. We present the gravitational field equations for an anisotropic stress-energy tensor and consider the generic conditions, for the auxiliary metric, at the wormhole throat. In addition to this, we obtain an exact solution for an asymptotically flat wormhole.
A fundamental ingredient in wormhole physics is the presence of exotic matter, which involves the violation of the null energy condition. Although a plethora of wormhole solutions have been explored in the literature, it is useful to find geometries that minimize the usage of exotic matter. In the context of modified gravity, it has also been shown that the normal matter can be imposed to satisfy the null energy condition, and it is the higher order curvature terms, interpreted as a gravitational fluid, that sustain these non-standard wormhole geometries, fundamentally different from their cou…
In this work, we construct traversable wormhole geometries in the context of f(R) modified theories of gravity. We impose that the matter threading the wormhole satisfies the energy conditions, so that it is the effective stress-energy tensor containing higher order curvature derivatives that is responsible for the null energy condition violation. Thus, the higher order curvature terms, interpreted as a gravitational fluid, sustain these non-standard wormhole geometries, fundamentally different from their counterparts in general relativity. In particular, by considering specific shape function…
We posit a geometrical description of the entanglement of purification for subregions in a holographic CFT. The bulk description naturally generalizes the two-party case and leads to interesting inequalities among multi-party entanglements of purification that can be geometrically proven from the conjecture. Further, we study the relationship between holographic entanglements of purification in locally-AdS3 spacetimes and entanglement entropies in multi-throated wormhole geometries constructed via quotienting by isometries. In particular, we derive new holographic inequalities for geometries t…
A possible candidate for the present accelerated expansion of the Universe is ''phantom energy'', which possesses an equation of state of the form $ω\equiv p/ρ<-1$, consequently violating the null energy condition. As this is the fundamental ingredient to sustain traversable wormholes, this cosmic fluid presents us with a natural scenario for the existence of these exotic geometries. In this context, we shall construct phantom wormhole geometries by matching an interior wormhole solution, governed by the phantom energy equation of state, to an exterior vacuum at a junction interface. Several p…
In this work, we find novel static and spherically symmetric wormhole geometries using a three-form field. By solving the gravitational field equations, we find a variety of analytical and numerical solutions and show that it is possible for the matter fields threading the wormhole to satisfy the null and weak energy conditions throughout the spacetime, when the three-form field is present. In these cases, the form field is responsible for supporting the wormhole and all the exoticity is confined to it. Thus, the three-form curvature terms, which may be interpreted as a gravitational fluid, su…
In this work, a general class of wormhole geometries in conformal Weyl gravity is analyzed. A wide variety of exact solutions of asymptotically flat spacetimes is found, in which the stress energy tensor profile differs radically from its general relativistic counterpart. In particular, a class of geometries is constructed that satisfies the energy conditions in the throat neighborhood, which is in clear contrast to the general relativistic solutions.
An interesting class of scalar-tensor models, denoted by kinetic gravity braiding (KGB), has recently been proposed. These models contain interactions of the second derivatives of the scalar field that do not lead to additional degrees of freedom and exhibit peculiar features, such as an essential mixing of the scalar $ϕ$ and tensor kinetic $X$ terms. In this work, we consider the possibility that wormhole geometries are sustained by the KGB theory. More specifically, we present the full gravitational field equations in a static and spherically symmetric traversable wormhole background, and ou…
The self-interaction for a static point charge in the space-time of a thin-shell wormhole constructed connecting two identical Schwarzschild geometries is calculated in a series expansion. The electrostatic self-force is evaluated numerically. It is found to be attractive towards the throat except for some values of the throat radius proximate to the value of the Schwarzschild horizon for which the force is repulsive or attractive depending on the position of the charge. The result differs from the self-force in the space-time of the Schwarzschild black hole, where it is always repulsive from …
The measurement of the epicyclic frequencies is a widely used astrophysical technique to infer information on a given self-gravitating system and on the related gravity background. We derive their explicit expressions in static and spherically symmetric wormhole spacetimes. We discuss how these theoretical results can be applied to: (1) detect the presence of a wormhole, distinguishing it by a black hole; (2) reconstruct wormhole solutions through the fit of the observational data, once we have them. Finally, we discuss the physical implications of our proposed epicyclic method.
Exact wormhole solutions, while eagerly sought after, often have the appearance of being overly specialized or highly artificial. A case for the possible existence of traversable wormholes would be more compelling if an abundance of solutions could be found. It is shown in this note that for many of the wormhole geometries in the literature, the exact solutions obtained imply the existence of large sets of additional solutions.
In this work, we analyse the evolution of time-dependent traversable wormhole geometries in a Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker background in the context of the scalar-tensor representation of hybrid metric-Palatini gravity. We deduce the energy-momentum profile of the matter threading the wormhole spacetime in terms of the background quantities, the scalar field, the scale factor and the shape function, and find specific wormhole solutions by considering a barotropic equation of state for the background matter. We find that particular cases satisfy the null and weak energy conditions for al…
In this work we construct traversable wormholes geometries in the framework of the complexity factor. We provide the redshift function of a Casimir traversable wormhole which, in combination with a non--vanishing complexity factor, leads to a traversable wormhole with a minimum amount of exotic matter. The shape function and the embedding diagram are shown and discussed. The tidal accelerations and the time required to get through the wormholes are estimated.
