The nature of the interplay between superconductivity and magnetism in the cuprates remains one of the fundamental unsolved problems in high temperature superconductivity. Whether and how these two phenomena are interdependent is perhaps most sharply seen in the stripe phases of various copper-oxide materials. These phases, involving a mixture of spin and charge density waves, do not yet admit a complete, overarching theoretical treatment. However aspects of this problem can be analyzed. In this work, we focus on the magnetic side of stripe physics. To this end, we study a simple model of a stripe-ordered phase consisting of an array of alternating coupled doped and undoped two-leg Hubbard-like ladders. To obtain the magnetic response, we employ already available dynamical susceptibilities of the individual two-leg ladders and treat the interladder coupling in a random phase approximation. Strikingly, we find two possible scenarios for the ordered state induced by the coupling between ladders: the spin modulation can occur either along or perpendicular to the direction of the stripes. These two scenarios are differentiated according to different microscopic realizations of the component doped ladders. However inelastic neutron scattering experiments on the two stripe ordered cuprates, La_{1.875}Ba_{0.125}CuO_4 and La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4, do not readily distinguish between these two scenarios due to manner in which stripes form in these materials.
Motivated by experiments on LBCO-1/8 which suggest that stripe order co-exists with two-dimensional pairing without inter-layer phase coherence over an extended range of temperatures, we determine the inter-layer Josephson coupling in the presence of stripe order. We employ a mean-field description of bond-centered stripes, with a zero-momentum superconducting condensate and alternating stripe directions pinned by the low-temperature tetragonal (LTT) lattice structure. We show that the Fermi-surface reconstruction arising from strong stripe order can suppress the Josephson coupling between adj…
Temperature dependence of the Hall coefficient, R_H_, has been investigated in charge-spin stripe-ordered La-214 high-T_c_ superconductors. Using the simplest stripe-ordered system of La_2-x_Ba_x_CuO_4_, it has been clarified that both the behavior of R_H_ and its sign exhibit significant dependences on the hole concentration. That is, R_H_ is zero in the ground state of the charge-spin stripe order at x=1/8, while it is negative in the less-stabilized state of the charge stripe for x<1/8. These are interpreted as owing to the delicate balance of the contributions of the hole-like Fermi surfac…
We have observed a diffuse component to the low-energy magnetic excitation spectrum of stripe-ordered La5/3Sr1/3NiO4 probed by neutron inelastic scattering. The diffuse scattering forms a square pattern with sides parallel and perpendicular to the stripe directions. The signal is dispersive, with a maximum energy of ~10 meV. Probed at 2 meV the scattering decreases in strength with increasing temperature, and is barely visible at 100 K. We argue that the signal originates from dynamic, quasi- one-dimensional, antiferromagnetic correlations among the stripe electrons.
Experiments on underdoped cuprate superconductors suggest an intricate relation between the normal-state Nernst effect and stripe order: The Nernst signal appears enhanced near 1/8 hole doping and its onset temperature scales with the stripe-ordering temperature over some range of doping. Here, we employ a phenomenological quasiparticle model to calculate the normal state Nernst signal in the presence of stripe order. We find that Fermi pockets caused by translational symmetry breaking lead to a strongly enhanced Nernst signal with a sign depending on the modulation period of the ordered state…
We present a combined x-ray and neutron diffraction study of the stripe ordered superconductor \lscox{0.12}. The average crystal structure is consistent with the orthorhombic $Bmab$ space group as commonly reported in the literature. This structure however is not symmetry compatible with a second order phase transition into the stripe order phase, and, as we report here numerous Bragg peaks forbidden in the $Bmab$ space group are observed. We have studied and analysed these $Bmab$-forbidden Bragg reflections. Fitting of the diffraction intensities yields monoclinic lattice distortions that are…
We study a model of a stripe ordered doped antiferromagnet consisting of coupled Hubbard ladders which can be tuned from quasi-one-dimensional to two-dimensional. We solve for the magnetization and charge density on the ladders by Hartree-Fock theory and find a set of solutions with lightly doped ``spin-stripes'' which are antiferromagnetic and more heavily doped anti-phase ``charge-stripes''. Both the spin- and charge-stripes have electronic spectral weight near the Fermi energy but in different regions of the Brillouin zone; the spin-stripes in the ``nodal'' region, near (π/2,π/2), and the c…
Based on a two-dimensional model of coupled two-leg spin ladders, we derive a unified picture of recent neutron scattering data of stripe-ordered La_(15/8)Ba_(1/8)CuO_4, namely of the low-energy magnons around the superstructure satellites and of the triplon excitations at higher energies. The resonance peak at the antiferromagnetic wave vector Q_AF in the stripe-ordered phase corresponds to a saddle point in the dispersion of the magnetic excitations. Quantitative agreement with the neutron data is obtained for J= 130-160 meV and J_cyc/J = 0.2-0.25.
The effects of the stripe order on the optical spectra of La-based cuprates are reviewed. The main effect on the high Tc superconducting cuprates is to rapidly reduce the Josephson plasma frequency in the c-axis spectrum as a consequence of weakening of the Josephson coupling between CuO2 layers. This points toward a two dimensional (2D) superconductivity in the stripe phase, although it is difficult to realize a 2D superconductivity in real materials. We also discuss the experimental results suggesting the presence of stripe effect in other cuprates even if they do not show the static stripe …
A prevailing description of the stripe phase in underdoped cuprate superconductors is that the charge carriers (holes) phase segregate on a microscopic scale into hole rich and hole poor regions. We report resonant elastic x-ray scattering measurements of stripe-ordered La$_{1.475}$Nd$_{0.4}$Sr$_{0.125}$CuO$_4$ at the Cu $L$ and O $K$ absorption edges that identify an additional feature of stripe order. Analysis of the energy dependence of the scattering intensity reveals that the dominant signature of the stripe order is a spatial modulation in the energies of Cu 3d and O 2p states rather tha…
Polarized- and unpolarized-neutron scattering measurements of the spin excitation spectrum in the stripe-ordered phase of La2NiO4+d (d = 0.11) are presented. At low energies, the magnetic spectral weight is found to shift anomalously towards the two-dimensional antiferromagnetic wave vector, similar to the low-energy dispersions observed in cuprate superconductors. While spin-wave spectra in stripe phases can exhibit an apparent inward dispersion, we find that the peak shifts measured here cannot be accounted for by this effect. Possible extensions of the model are discussed.
The electronic structure and the single-particle spectral density of a stripe array formed by ladder-like domain walls (DWs) and by antiferromagnetic (AF) domains of width 2 lattice spacings are computed and compared with ARPES spectra from some doped cuprates belonging to the 214 family of compounds. We assume that bond order is formed on legs in DWs and that the phase of the sublattice magnetization changes by Pi across each DW. The intensity map plotted in the coordination frame momentum-energy reproduces quite well the ARPES spectra obtained at the doping level of 15%. We consider this agr…
Recent spectroscopic observations of a d-wave-like gap in stripe-ordered La(2-x)Ba(x)CuO(4) with x=1/8 have led us to critically analyze the anisotropic transport and magnetization properties of this material. The data suggest that concomitant with the spin ordering is an electronic decoupling of the CuO(2) planes. We observe a transition (or crossover) to a state of two-dimensional (2D) fluctuating superconductivity, which eventually reaches a 2D superconducting state below a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition. Thus, it appears that the stripe order in La(2-x)Ba(x)CuO(4) frustrates th…
We use microscopic Bogoliubov-de Gennes formalism to explore the ground-state phase diagram of the single-band attractive Hofstadter-Hubbard model on a square lattice. We show that the interplay between the Hofstadter butterfly and superfluidity breaks spatial symmetry, and gives rise to stripe-ordered superfluid and supersolid phases in large parameter spaces. We also discuss the effects of a trapping potential and comment on the viability of observing stripe-ordered phases with cold Fermi gases.
In the stripe-ordered state of a strongly-correlated two-dimensional electronic system, under a set of special circumstances, the superconducting condensate, like the magnetic order, can occur at a non-zero wave-vector corresponding to a spatial period double that of the charge order. In this case, the Josephson coupling between near neighbor planes, especially in a crystal with the special structure of La_{2-x}Ba_xCuO_4, vanishes identically. We propose that this is the underlying cause of the dynamical decoupling of the layers recently observed in transport measurements at x=1/8.
In underdoped cuprate superconductors, a rich competition occurs between superconductivity and charge density wave (CDW) order. Whether rotational symmetry breaking (nematicity) occurs intrinsically and generically or as a consequence of other orders is under debate. Here we employ resonant x-ray scattering in stripe-ordered (La,M)_2CuO_4 to probe the relationship between electronic nematicity of the Cu 3d orbitals, structure of the (La,M)_2O_2 layers, and CDW order. We find distinct temperature dependences for the structure of the (La,M)_2O_2 layers and the electronic nematicity of the CuO_2 …
We study the distribution of electronic spectral weight in a doped antiferromagnet with various types of charge order and compare to angle resolved photoemission experiments on lightly doped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ (LSCO) and electron doped Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_{4\pmδ}$. Calculations on in-phase stripe and bubble phases for the electron doped system are both in good agreement with experiment including in particular the existence of in-gap spectral weight. In addition we find that for in-phase stripes, in contrast to anti-phase stripes, the chemical potential is likely to move with doping. For …
A phase separation model for stripes has found good agreement with photoemission experiments and with other studies which suggest a termination of the striped phase in the slightly overdoped regime. Here the model is extended in a number of respects. In particular, a discussion of the nature of the charged stripes is presented, suggesting how density waves, superconductivity, and strong correlations can compete with the quantum size effects inherent in narrow stripes. The anomalous doping dependence of the chemical potential is explained.
Recent angle-resolved $c$-axis resistivity measurements of the stripe-ordered La$_{2-x}$Ba$_x$CuO$_4$ (LBCO) with $x=1/8$ revealed an unexpected dependence on the direction of the in-plane magnetic field. We argue that these and other available data for the $c$-axis transport point to the existence of superconducting pairs of two different types in the $x=1/8$ LBCO below the stripe ordering temperature. The pairs of one type carry finite momentum and are confined to the Cu-O planes; the pairs of other type (probably the conventional $d$-wave with zero momentum) propagate along narrow conductin…
We report a detailed study of the temperature and magnetic-field dependence of the spin susceptibility for a single crystal of La(1.875)Ba(0.125)CuO(4). From a quantitative analysis, we find that the temperature-dependent anisotropy of the susceptibility, observed in both the paramagnetic and stripe-ordered phases, directly indicates that localized Cu moments dominate the magnetic response. A field-induced spin-flop transition provides further corroboration for the role of local moments. Contrary to previous analyses of data from polycrystalline samples, we find that a commonly-assumed isotrop…
The origin of the weak insulating behavior of the resistivity, i.e. $ρ_{xx}\propto\ln(1/T)$, revealed when magnetic fields ($H$) suppress superconductivity in underdoped cuprates has been a longtime mystery. Surprisingly, the high-field behavior of the resistivity observed recently in charge- and spin-stripe-ordered La-214 cuprates suggests a metallic, as opposed to insulating, high-field normal state. Here we report the vanishing of the Hall coefficient in this field-revealed normal state for all $T<(2-6)T_{\mathrm{c}}^{0}$, where $T_{\mathrm{c}}^{0}$ is the zero-field superconducting transit…
Inelastic neutron scattering has been used to measure the low-energy spin excitations in the ordered charge-stripe phase of La(2)NiO(4+d) with d=0.133. Spin-wave-like excitations disperse away from the incommensurate magnetic superlattice points with a velocity ~60% of that in the d=0 compound. Incommensurate inelastic peaks remain well-resolved up to at least twice the magnetic ordering temperature. Paramagnetic scattering from a d=0.105 sample, which has a Néel-ordered ground state, shows anomalies suggestive of incipient stripe correlations. Similarities between these results and measuremen…
We present a Cu nuclear magnetic/quadrupole resonance study of the charge stripe ordered phase of LBCO, with detection of previously unobserved ('wiped-out') signal. We show that spin-spin and spin-lattice relaxation rates are strongly enhanced in the charge ordered phase, explaining the apparent signal decrease in earlier investigations. The enhancement is caused by magnetic, rather than charge fluctuations, conclusively confirming the long-suspected assumption that spin fluctuations are responsible for the wipeout effect. Observation of the full Cu signal enables insight into the spin and ch…
Optical gyrotropy, the lifting of degeneracy between left and right circularly polarized light, can be generated by either time-reversal or chiral symmetry breaking. In the high-$T_c$ superconductor La$_{2-x}$Ba$_x$CuO$_4$ (LBCO), gyrotropy onsets at the same temperature as charge stripe order, suggesting that the rotation of the stripe direction from one plane to the next generates a helical pattern that breaks chiral symmetry. In order to further test this chiral stacking hypothesis it is necessary to develop an understanding of the physical mechanism by which chirality generates gyrotropy. …
A phase separation model is presented for the stripe phase of the cuprates, which allows the doping dependence of the photoemission spectra to be calculated. The idealized limit of a well-ordered array of magnetic and charged stripes is analyzed, including effects of long-range Coulomb repulsion. Remarkably, down to the limit of two-cell wide stripes, the dispersion can be interpreted as essentially a superposition of the two end-phase dispersions, with superposed minigaps associated with the lattice periodicity. The largest minigap falls near the Fermi level; it can be enhanced by proximity t…
Transport measurements provide important characterizations of the nature of stripe order in the cuprates. Initial studies of systems such as La(1.6-x)Nd(0.4)Sr(x)CuO(4) demonstrated the strong anisotropy between in-plane and c-axis resistivities, but also suggested that stripe order results in a tendency towards insulating behavior within the planes at low temperature. More recent work on La(2-x)Ba(x)CuO(4) with x=1/8 has revealed the occurrence of quasi-two-dimensional superconductivity that onsets with spin-stripe order. The suppression of three-dimensional superconductivity indicates a frus…
We report detailed measurements of the temperature dependence of the lower critical field Hc1 in the stripe ordered La1.6-xNd0.4SrxCuO4 (x = 0.10 and 0.15) superconductors. It is found that Hc1(T) of the samples increase with decreasing temperature and show an negative curvature below Tc. The penetration depth λ(T) estimated from Hc1(T) data satisfies a linear temperature dependence behavior below Tc/2, which is consistent with that in a superconductor with d-wave symmetry of the energy gap and the upward trend in Hc1(T) may be due to the cooperation of the hole and election pockets arising fr…
Charge and spin stripe order is a type of electronic crystal observed in certain layered cuprates associated with high-temperature superconductivity. Quantum-disordered stripes could be relevant for understanding the superconductivity. Here I discuss recent experimental characterizations of the stripe-ordered state in La(1.875)Ba(0.125)CuO(4), and compare them with properties of superconducting compositions.
We measured reflectivity on static stripe-ordered La$_{1.84-y}$Nd$_y$Sr$_{0.16}$CuO$_4$ (LNSCO) $y$\,=\,0.1, 0.2, 0.3, and 0.4 by means of reflective terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) with electric field polarized along c-axis, in which one can obtain lower frequency information than the conventional Fourier transform type spectrometer. Recently, two-dimensional superconducting (2DSC) property \cite{tajima,schafgans,li}, intra-layer perfect conductivity not accompanied with inter-layer superconducting behavior, was reported on LNSCO ($x$\,=0.15\,,\,$y$\,$\geq$\,0.2). We observed the…
Unidirectional spin and charge density wave order in the cuprates is known to compete with superconductivity. In the stripe order (La,M)$_2$CuO$_4$ family of cuprates, spin and charge order occur as unidirectional order that can be stabilized by symmetry breaking structural distortions, such as the low temperature tetragonal (LTT) phase. Here we examine the interplay between structure and the formation of charge density wave (CDW) order in the LTT phase of La$_{1.475}$Nd$_{0.4}$Sr$_{0.125}$CuO$_4$ by applying uniaxial stress to distort the structure and influence the formation of CDW order. Us…
Using polarized neutron scattering we establish that the magnetic order in La$_{1.48}$Nd$_{0.4}$Sr$_{0.12}$CuO$_4$ is either (i) one dimensionally modulated and collinear, consistent with the stripe model or (ii) two dimensionally modulated with a novel noncollinear structure. The measurements rule out a number of alternative models characterized by 2D electronic order or 1D helical spin order. The low-energy spin excitations are found to be primarily transversely polarized relative to the stripe ordered state, consistent with conventional spin waves.
An inelastic neutron scattering study of the spin waves corresponding to the stripe antiferromagnetic order in insulating Rb$_{0.8}$Fe$_{1.5}$S$_2$ throughout the Brillouin zone is reported. The spin wave spectra are well described by a Heisenberg Hamiltonian with anisotropic in-plane exchange interactions. Integrating the ordered moment and the spin fluctuations results in a total moment squared of $27.6\pm4.2μ_B^2$/Fe, consistent with $\mathrm{S \approx 2}$. Unlike $X$Fe$_2$As$_2$ ($X=$ Ca, Sr, and Ba), where the itinerant electrons have a significant contribution, our data suggest that this…
Switching on interchain coupling in a system of one-dimensional strongly interacting chains often leads to an ordered state. Quite generally, there is a competition between an insulating charge-density-wave and a superconducting state. In the case of repulsive interactions, charge-density wave usually wins over superconductivity. Here, we show that a suitable modulation in the form of a period 4 bond-centered stripe can reverse this balance even in the repulsive case and produce a superconducting state with relatively high temperature.
Superconductivity in layered copper-oxide compounds emerges when charge carriers are added to antiferromagnetically-ordered CuO2 layers. The carriers destroy the antiferromagnetic order, but strong spin fluctuations persist throughout the superconducting phase and are intimately linked to super-conductivity. Neutron scattering measurements of spin fluctuations in hole-doped copper oxides have revealed an unusual `hour-glass' feature in the momentum-resolved magnetic spectrum, present in a wide range of superconducting and non-superconducting materials. There is no widely-accepted explanation f…
The experimental observations of stripes in superconducting cuprates and insulating nickelates clearly show the modulation in charge and spin density. However, these have proven to be rather insensitive to the harmonic structure and (site or bond) ordering. Using 139La NMR in La2NiO4.17, we show that in the 1/3 hole doped nickelate below the freezing temperature the stripes are strongly solitonic and site ordered with Ni3+ ions carrying S=1/2 in the domain walls and Ni2+ ions with S=1 in the domains.
The charge and spin correlations in La$_{1.875}$Ba$_{0.125}$CuO$_4$ (LBCO 1/8) are studied using Cu $L_3$ edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). The static charge order (CO) is observed at a wavevector of $(0.24,0)$ and its charge nature confirmed by measuring the dependence of this peak on the incident x-ray polarization. The paramagnon excitation in LBCO 1/8 is then measured as it disperses through the CO wavevector. Within the experimental uncertainty no changes are observed in the paramagnon due to the static CO, and the paramagnon seems to be similar to that measured in other cu…
Charge excitations were studied for stipe-ordered 214 compounds, La$_{5/3}$Sr$_{1/3}$NiO$_{4}$ and 1/8-doped La$_{2}$(Ba, Sr)$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering in hard x-ray regime. We have observed charge excitations at the energy transfer of 1 eV with the momentum transfer corresponding to the charge stripe spatial period both for the diagonal (nikelate) and parallel (cuprates) stripes. These new excitations can be interpreted as a collective stripe excitation or charge excitonic mode to a stripe-related in-gap state.
We discuss the magnetic excitations of well-ordered stripe and checkerboard phases, including the high energy magnetic excitations of recent interest and possible connections to the "resonance peak" in cuprate superconductors. Using a suitably parametrized Heisenberg model and spin wave theory, we study a variety of magnetically ordered configurations, including vertical and diagonal site- and bond-centered stripes and simple checkerboards. We calculate the expected neutron scattering intensities as a function of energy and momentum. At zero frequency, the satellite peaks of even square-wave s…
An hour-glass shaped magnetic excitation spectrum appears to be an universal characteristic of the high-temperature superconducting cuprates. Fluctuating charge stripes or alternative band structure approaches are able to explain the origin of these spectra. Recently, an hour- glass spectrum has been observed in an insulating cobaltate, thus, favouring the charge stripe scenario. Here we show that neither charge stripes nor band structure effects are responsible for the hour-glass dispersion in a cobaltate within the checkerboard charge ordered regime of La2-xSrxCoO4. The search for charge str…
We report novel features in the in-plane magnetoresistance (MR) of heavily underdoped YBa_2Cu_3O_{6+x}, which unveil a developed ``charged stripe'' structure in this system. One of the striking features is an anisotropy of the MR with a "d-wave" symmetry upon rotating the magnetic field H within the ab plane, which is caused by the rotation of the stripes with the external field. With decreasing temperature, a hysteresis shows up below ~20 K in the MR curve as a function of H and finally below 10 K the magnetic-field application produces a persistent change in the resistivity. This "memory eff…
We report on a thermoelectric investigation of the stripe and superconducting phases of the cuprate La$_{2-x}$Ba$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ near the $x=1/8$ doping known to host stable stripes. We use the doping and magnetic field dependence of field-symmetric Nernst effect features to delineate the phenomenology of these phases. Our measurements are consistent with prior reports of time-reversal symmetry breaking signatures above the superconducting $T_{\rm c}$, and crucially detect a sharp, robust, field-invariant peak at the stripe charge order temperature, $T_{\rm {\scriptscriptstyle CO}}$. Our observ…
Low-valent nickelates R$_{n+1}$Ni$_n$O$_{2n+2}$ (R = rare earth) containing Ni$^{1+}$ (d$^{9}$) with a quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) square planar coordination geometry possess structural and electronic properties that are similar to those of high-Tc cuprates, including superconductivity itself in the doped infinite layer ($n = \infty$) RNiO$_2$ system. Within this R$_{n+1}$Ni$_n$O$_{2n+2}$ nickelate family, the crystallographic isomorphs Pr$_4$Ni$_3$O$_8$ and La$_4$Ni$_3$O$_8$ exhibit singularly different ground states: Pr$_4$Ni$_3$O$_8$ is metallic and La$_4$Ni$_3$O$_8$ is a charge- and s…
A spin density-wave quantum critical point (QCP) is the central organizing principle of organic, iron-pnictide, heavy-fermion and electron-doped cuprate superconductors. It accounts for the superconducting Tc dome, the non-Fermi-liquid resistivity, and the Fermi-surface reconstruction. Outside the magnetically ordered phase above the QCP, scattering and pairing decrease in parallel as the system moves away from the QCP. Here we argue that a similar scenario, based on a stripe-order QCP, is a central organizing principle of hole-doped cuprate superconductors. Key properties of Eu-LSCO, Nd-LSCO …
One type of order that has been observed to compete with superconductivity in cuprates involves alternating charge and antiferromagnetic stripes. Recent neutron scattering studies indicate that the magnetic excitation spectrum of a stripe-ordered sample is very similar to that observed in superconducting samples. In fact, it now appears that there may be a universal magnetic spectrum for the cuprates. One likely implication of this universal spectrum is that stripes of a dynamic form are present in the superconducting samples. On cooling through the superconducting transition temperature, a ga…
The ability to probe symmetry breaking transitions on their natural time scales is one of the key challenges in nonequilibrium physics. Stripe ordering represents an intriguing type of broken symmetry, where complex interactions result in atomic-scale lines of charge and spin density. Although phonon anomalies and periodic distortions attest the importance of electron-phonon coupling in the formation of stripe phases, a direct time-domain view of vibrational symmetry breaking is lacking. We report experiments that track the transient multi-THz response of the model stripe compound La$_{1.75}$S…
In part (I) of this two paper series on stripe fractionalization, we argued that in principle the `domain wall-ness' of the stripe phase could persist in the spin and charge disordered superconductors, and we demonstrated how this physics is in one-to-one correspondence with Ising gauge theory. Here we focus on yet another type of order suggested by the gauge theory: the quantum spin nematic. Although it is not easy to measure this order directly, we argue that the superconducting vortices act as perturbations destroying the gauge symmetry locally. This turns out to give rise to a simple examp…
One of the central problems in High T_{c} superconductivity is to reconcile the abundant evidence for stripe-like physics at `short' distances with the equally convincing evidence for BCS like physics at large distance scales (the `nodal fermions'). Our central hypothesis is that the duality notion applies: the superconductor should be viewed as a condensate of topological excitations associated with the fully ordered stripe phase. As we will argue, the latter are not only a form of `straighforward' spin and charge order but also involve a form of `hidden' or `topological' long range order whi…
High resolution angle-resolved photoemission measurements have been carried out on (La_1.4-xNd_0.6Sr_x)CuO_4, a model system with static stripes, and (La_1.85Sr_0.15)CuO_4, a high temperature superconductor (T_c=40K) with dynamic stripes. In addition to the straight segments near (pi, 0) and (0, pi) antinodal regions, we have identified the existence of nodal spectral weight and its associated Fermi surface in the electronic structure of both systems. The ARPES spectra in the nodal region show well-defined Fermi cut-off, indicating a metallic character of this charge-ordered state. This observ…
We report pressure-dependent neutron diffraction and muon spin relaxation/rotation measurements combined with first-principles calculations to investigate the structural, magnetic, and electronic properties of BaFe$_2$S$_3$ under pressure. The experimental results reveal a gradual enhancement of the stripe-type ordering temperature with increasing pressure up to 2.6 GPa and no observable change in the size of the ordered moment. The ab initio calculations suggest that the magnetism is highly sensitive to the Fe-S bond lengths and angles, clarifying discrepancies with previously published resul…
In many antiferromagnetic, quasi-two-dimensional materials, doping with holes leads to "stripe" phases, in which the holes congregate along antiphase domain walls in the otherwise antiferromagnetic texture. Using a suitably parametrized two-dimensional Heisenberg model on a square lattice, we study the spin wave spectra of well-ordered spin stripes, comparing bond-centered antiphase domain walls to site-centered antiphase domain walls for a range of spacings between the stripes and for stripes both aligned with the lattice ("vertical") and oriented along the diagonals of the lattice ("diagonal…
We investigate the transport properties of La$_{1.8-x}$Eu$_{0.2}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ ($x=0.04$, 0.08, 0.125, 0.15, 0.2) with a special focus on the Nernst effect in the normal state. Various anomalous features are present in the data. For $x=0.125$ and 0.15 a kink-like anomaly is present in the vicinity of the onset of charge stripe order in the LTT phase, suggestive of enhanced positive quasiparticle Nernst response in the stripe ordered phase. At higher temperature, all doping levels except $x=0.2$ exhibit a further kink anomaly in the LTO phase which cannot unambiguously be related to stripe orde…
It is conjectured that the anomalous spin dynamics observed in the normal state of cuprate superconductors might find its origin in a nearly ordered spin system which is kept in motion by thermally meandering charged domain walls. `Temperature sets the scale' finds a natural explanation, while a crossover to a low temperature quantum domain wall fluid is implied.
Strongly correlated electron systems host a variety of poorly understood correlations in their high temperature normal state. Unlike ordered phases defined by order parameters, these normal state phases are often defined through unconventional properties such as strange metallic transport or spectroscopic pseudogaps. Characterizing the microscopic correlations in the normal state is necessary to elucidate mechanisms that lead to these properties and their connection to ground state orders. Here we establish the presence of intertwined charge and spin stripes in the strange metal normal state o…
Optical excitation of stripe-ordered La$_{2-x}$Ba$_x$CuO$_4$ has been shown to transiently enhance superconducting tunneling between the CuO$_2$ planes. This effect was revealed by a blue-shift, or by the appearance of a Josephson Plasma Resonance in the terahertz-frequency optical properties. Here, we show that this photo-induced state can be strengthened by the application of high external magnetic fields oriented along the c-axis. For a 7-Tesla field, we observe up to a ten-fold enhancement in the transient interlayer phase correlation length, accompanied by a two-fold increase in the relax…
We use inelastic neutron scattering to study the temperature dependence of magnetic excitations (for energies up to 100 meV) in the cuprate La$_{1.875}$Ba$_{0.125}$CuO$_4$. This compound exhibits stripe order below a temperature of ~50 K; previous measurements have shown that the magnetic excitations of the stripe-ordered phase have an hour-glass-like dispersion, with a saddle point at ~50 meV. Here we compare measurements in the disordered phase taken at 65 and 300 K. At energies on the scale of $k_{\rm B}T$, there is substantial momentum-broadening of the signal, and the low-energy incommens…
Doped antiferromagnets host a vast array of physical properties and learning how to control them is one of the biggest challenges of condensed matter physics. La$_{1.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$NiO$_4$ (LSNO) is a classic example of such a material. At low temperatures holes introduced via substitution of La by Sr segregate into lines to form boundaries between magnetically ordered domains in the form of stripes. The stripes become dynamic at high temperatures, but LSNO remains insulating presumably because an interplay between magnetic correlations and electron-phonon coupling localizes charge carriers. Mag…
Quantum materials are amenable to non-equilibrium manipulation with light, enabling modification and control of macroscopic properties. Light-based augmentation of superconductivity is particularly intriguing. Copper-oxide superconductors exhibit complex interplay between spin order, charge order and superconductivity, offering the prospect of enhanced coherence by altering the balance between competing orders. We utilize terahertz time domain spectroscopy to monitor the c-axis Josephson Plasma Resonance (JPR) in La$_{2-x}$Ba$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ (x = 0.115) as a direct probe of superconductivity dy…
We study the electronic structure within a system of phase-decoupled one-dimensional superconductors coexisting with stripe spin and charge density wave order. This system has a nodal Fermi surface (Fermi arc) in the form of a hole pocket and an antinodal pseudogap. The spectral function in the antinodes is approximately particle-hole symmetric contrary to the gapped regions just outside the pocket. We find that states at the Fermi energy are extended whereas states near the pseudogap energy have localization lengths as short as the inter-stripe spacing. We consider pairing which has either lo…
Most iron-based superconductors undergo a transition to a magnetically ordered state characterized by staggered stripes of parallel spins. With ordering vectors $(π,0)$ or $(0,π)$, this magnetic state breaks the high-temperature tetragonal symmetry of the system, which is manifested by a splitting of the lattice Bragg peaks. Remarkably, recent experiments in hole-doped iron arsenides reported an ordered state that displays magnetic Bragg peaks at $(π,0)$ and $(0,π)$ but remains tetragonal. Despite being inconsistent with a magnetic stripe configuration, this unusual magnetic phase can be descr…
