We present a technique that applies spectral synthesis to medium resolution spectroscopy (MRS, R ~ 6000) in the red (6300 A < lambda < 9100 A) to measure [Fe/H] and [alpha/Fe] of individual red giant stars over a wide metallicity range. We apply our technique to 264 red giant stars in seven Galactic globular clusters and demonstrate that it reproduces the metallicities and alpha enhancements derived from high resolution spectroscopy (HRS). The MRS technique excludes the three Ca II triplet lines and instead relies on a plethora of weaker lines. Unlike empirical metallicity estimators, such as the equivalent width of the Ca II triplet, the synthetic method presented here is applicable over an arbitrarily wide metallicity range and is independent of assumptions about the alpha enhancement. Estimates of cluster mean [Fe/H] from different HRS studies show typical scatter of ~0.1 dex but can be larger than 0.2 dex for metal-rich clusters. The scatter in HRS abundance estimates among individual stars in a given cluster is also comparable to 0.1 dex. By comparison, the scatter among MRS [Fe/H] estimates of individual stars in a given cluster is ~0.1 dex for most clusters but 0.17 dex for the most metal-rich cluster, M71 (<[Fe/H]> = -0.8). A star-by-star comparison of HRS vs. MRS [alpha/Fe] estimates indicates that the precision in [alpha/Fe]_MRS is 0.05 dex. The errors in [Fe/H]_MRS and [alpha/Fe]_MRS increase beyond 0.25 dex only below signal-to-noise ratios of 20 A^(-1), which is typical for existing MRS of the red giant stars in Leo I, one of the most distant Milky Way satellites (250 kpc).
We built modelled spectra of stellar population at high resolution and with variable alpha-elements enhancements. Analysing spectra of Galactic globular clusters we show that it is possible to derive reliably and efficiently [Mg/Fe] using spectra integrated along the line-of-sight. These detailed measurements open perspectives for investigating the enrichment process on galaxies and star clusters.
We measure reddenings to HII regions in NGC 2903, NGC 1512, M51, NGC 4449 and NGC 6946 from Hubble Space Telescope Pa alpha and H alpha images. Extinctions range from A_V ~ 5 - 0 depending upon the galaxy. For the galaxies with HST images in both lines, NGC 2903, NGC 1512 and M51, the Pa alpha and H alpha emission are almost identical in morphology which implies that little emission from bright HII regions is hidden from view by regions of comparatively high extinction. The scatter in the measured extinctions is only +- 0.5 mag. We compare the reddenings we measure in five galaxies using the P…
Assuming that damped Lyman-alpha(DLA) systems are galactic discs, we calculate the corresponding evolution of metal abundances. We use detailed multi-zone models of galactic chemical evolution (reproducing successfully the observed properties of disc galaxies) and appropriate statistics (including geometrical propability factors) to calculate the average metallicity as a function of redshift. The results are compatible with available observations, provided that observational biases are taken into account, as suggested by Boisse et al. (1998). In particular, high column density and high metalli…
According to Pei, Fall & Hauser (1999), the global metallicity evolution of the Universe can be represented by the ratio of the total metal content to the total gas content measured in Damped Lyman-alpha (DLA) systems (the ``column density weighted metallicity'' `a la Pettini). To minimize dust obscuration effects, a DLA sample with negligible dust content is considered, namely, 50 DLAs with log N(HI) < 20.8. The global metallicity found shows clear evidence of redshift evolution that goes from \sim1/30 solar at z\sim4.1 to solar at z \sim 0.4. More generally, DLAs with measured heavy elements…
We have collected data for 69 Damped Lyman-alpha (DLA) systems, to investigate the chemical evolution of galaxies in the redshift interval 0.0 < z < 4.4. In doing that, we have adopted the most general approach used so far to correct for dust depletion. The best solution, obtained through chi^2 minimization, gives as output parameters the global DLA metallicity and the dust-to-metals ratio. Clear evolution of the metallicity vs. redshift is found (99.99% significance level), with average values going from ~1/30 solar at z~4.1 to ~3/5 solar at z~0.5. We also find that the majority of DLAs (~60%…
We test the hypothesis that the host galaxies of long-duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) as well as quasar-selected damped Lyman-alpha (DLA) systems are drawn from the population of UV-selected star-forming, high-z galaxies (generally referred to as Lyman-break galaxies). Specifically, we compare the metallicity distributions of the GRB and DLA populations to simple models where these galaxies are drawn randomly from the distribution of star-forming galaxies according to their star-formation rate and HI cross-section respectively. We find that it is possible to match both observational distribut…
Chandra X-Ray Observatory (CXO) ACIS-S spectra of three quasars which lie behind three foreground damped Lyman alpha (DLA) absorbers are analyzed in order to attempt to determine the amount of photoelectric absorption due to metals present in their x-ray spectra. These absorbers are the three largest neutral hydrogen column density absorption-line systems known at low redshift (0.313 \le z_abs \le 0.524). They have HI column densities which lie between 3E21 and 5E21 atoms/cm^2. At these redshifts the amount of photoelectric absorption at x-ray energies is primarily an indicator of the oxygen a…
The mean metallicity of the thick disk of the Galaxy is 0.5 dex higher than that of the damped Lyman alpha systems. This has been interpreted to argue that stars in the former do not arise out of gas in the latter. Using new metallicity and H I column-density data we show the metal-rich damped systems do contain sufficient baryons at the thick-disk metallicity to account for the stellar masses of thick disks. Comparing our kinematic data with the metallicities we show that damped Lyman alpha systems exhibiting the largest profile velocity widths span a narrow range of high metallicities, while…
Zinc is a good indicator of metallicity in Damped Lyman alpha (DLA) systems because it is almost unaffected by dust depletion. However, the use of zinc as a tracer of metallicity evolution has been hampered by the difficulty of detecting the Zn II resonance lines at high redshift. The measurement of zinc abundance in a DLA system at z_abs > 3 obtained by means of the UVES spectrograph at the VLT prompted us to re-analyse the full sample of zinc abundances present in the literature to search for a metallicity-redshift relation in DLA systems. The study of the metallicities of individual systems…
Most models of cosmic chemical evolution predict that the mass-weighted mean interstellar metallicity of galaxies should rise with time from a low value $\sim 1/30$ solar at $z \sim 3$ to a nearly solar value at $z = 0$. In the absence of any selection effects, the damped Lyman-alpha absorbers (DLAs) in quasar spectra are expected to show such a rise in global metallicity. However, it has been difficult to determine whether or not DLAs show this effect, primarily because of the very small number of DLA metallicity measurements at low redshifts. In an attempt to put tighter constraints on the l…
Utilizing a new, high mass resolution hydrodynamic simulation we compute the metallicity evolution of damped Lyman alpha systems (DLAs) and find a reasonable agreement with observations. In particular, the observed slow evolution of the DLA metallicity occurs naturally in the simulation due to the combined effects of physical and observational selection. The slow metallicity evolution is caused by the steady transformation, with increasing time, of the highest metallicity systems to "galaxies", thus depleting this category, while all the lower metallicity systems show, individually, an increas…
We apply a physically motivated stellar feedback model to analyse the statistical properties of damped Lyman-alpha systems (DLAs) expected in the concordance cold dark matter (CDM) model. Our feedback model produces extended low-metallicity cold gaseous discs around small galaxies. Since the space density of galaxies with low circular speeds is high, these discs dominate the cross-section for the identification of DLAs at all redshifts. The combined effects of star formation, outflows and infall in our models result in mild evolution of the N_{HI}-weighted metallicity content in DLAs with reds…
We study the distribution of star formation rate (SFR) and metallicity of damped Lyman-alpha absorbers (DLAs) using cosmological smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) simulations of the Lambda cold dark matter model. Our simulations include a phenomenological model for feedback by galactic winds which allows us to examine the effect of galactic outflows on the distribution of SFR and metallicity of DLAs. For models with strong galactic winds, we obtain good agreement with recent observations with respect to total neutral hydrogen mass density, N_HI column-density distribution, abundance of DLA…
We used our database of ESO VLT-UVES spectra of quasars to build up a sample of 67 Damped Lyman-alpha (DLA) systems with redshifts 1.7<zabs<3.7. For each system, we measured average metallicities relative to Solar, [X/H] (with either X=Zn, S or Si), and the velocity widths of low-ionization line profiles, W1. We find that there is a tight correlation between the two quantities, detected at the 5sigma significance level. The existence of such a correlation, over more than two orders of magnitude spread in metallicity, is likely to be the consequence of an underlying mass-metallicity relation fo…
We have reanalyzed the existing data on Zinc abundances in damped Ly-alpha (DLA) absorbers to investigate whether their mean metallicity evolves with time. Most models of cosmic chemical evolution predict that the mass- weighted mean interstellar metallicity of galaxies should rise with time from a low value ~ 1/30 solar at z ~ 3 to a nearly solar value at z ~ 0. However, several previous analyses have suggested that there is little or no evolution in the global metallicity of DLAs. We have used a variety of statistical techniques to quantify the global metallicity-redshift relation and its un…
We characterize the importance of metallicity on the presence of molecular hydrogen in damped Lyman-alpha (DLA) systems. We construct a representative sample of 18 DLA/sub-DLA systems with log N(HI)>19.5 at high redshift (zabs>1.8) with metallicities relative to solar [X/H]>-1.3(with[X/H]= logN(X)/N(H)-log(X/H)solar and X either Zn, S or Si). We gather data covering the expected wavelength range of redshifted H2 absorption lines on all systems in the sample from either the literature (10 DLAs), the UVES-archive or new VLT-UVES observations for four of them. The sample is large enough to discus…
In an ongoing programme to identify a sample of high z DLA galaxies we have found the long sought for case of a Ly-alpha emitter seen in the centre of a broad DLA trough. This is the predicted `textbook case' of an intervening DLA galaxy if DLA galaxies are small, but would not be expected if intervening high redshift DLA galaxies have large gaseous disks. The Ly-alpha flux is 5.4{+2}{-0.8} * 1e-17 ergs/s/cm2 similar to what has been found in previously known high z DLA galaxies. The impact parameter is found to be 0.3+-0.3 arcsec. This is smaller than what was found in previous cases but stil…
We investigate possible signatures of feedback from galactic superwinds on the metallicity of the Lyman alpha forest, using a set of high resolution hydrodynamic simulations of a Lambda cold dark matter model. Simulations produce metals self-consistently, based on one single parameter, the metal yield, which in turn is constrained by metallicity in the intra-cluster gas. We follow metals as a separate density species. For the metallicity of Lyman alpha clouds with column density of N_{HI}~10^{14.5}-10^{15.5}/cm^2 at z=2-4 we find reasonable agreement between simulations, both with and without …
We report the discovery of two iron-group enhanced high-metallicity Mg II absorbers in a search through 28 Lyman Alpha forest clouds along the PKS 0454+039 sight line. Based upon our survey and the measured redshift number densities of W_r(MgII) <= 0.3 A absorbers and Lyman Alpha absorbers at z ~ 1, we suggest that roughly 5% of Lyman Alpha absorbers at z < 1 will exhibit "weak" Mg II absorption to a 5-sigma W_r(2796) detection limit of 0.02 A. The two discovered absorbers, at redshifts z = 0.6248 and z = 0.9315, have W_r(Lya) = 0.33 and 0.15 A, respectively. Based upon photoionization modelin…
We present an empirical calibration of the Mixing-Length free parameter $α$ based on a homogeneous Infrared database of 28 Galactic globular clusters spanning a wide metallicity range (-2.15$<$[Fe/H]$<$-0.2). Empirical estimates of the red giant effective temperatures have been obtained from infrared colors. Suitable relations linking these temperatures to the cluster metallicity have been obtained and compared to theoretical predictions. An appropriate set of models for the Sun and Population II giants have been computed by using both the standard solar metallicity $[Z/X]_{\odot}=0.0275$ and …
Establishing the reliability with which stellar population parameters can be measured is vital to extragalactic astronomy. Galactic GCs provide an excellent medium in which to test the consistency of Single Stellar Population (SSP) models as they should be our best analogue to a homogeneous (single) stellar population. Here we present age, metallicity and $α$-element abundance measurements for 48 Galactic globular clusters (GCs) as determined from integrated spectra using Lick indices and SSP models from Thomas, Maraston & Korn, Lee & Worthey and Vazdekis et al. By comparing our new measuremen…
We study the distribution of the star formation rate and metallicity of damped Lyman-alpha absorbers using cosmological SPH simulations of the Lambda cold dark matter model in the redshift range z=0-4.5. Our approach includes a phenomenological model of galactic wind. We find that there is a positive correlation between the projected stellar mass density and the neutral hydrogen column density (NHI) of DLAs for high NHI systems, and that there is a good correspondence in the spatial distribution of stars and DLAs in the simulations. The evolution of typical star-to-gas mass ratios in DLAs can …
A review of observational evidence in favour of a metallicity dependence of WN and WC stars is presented. New near-IR studies of Milky Way, LMC and SMC early-type WN stars are presented, with weake winds amongst WN stars containing hydrogen. A metallicity dependence is supported for WN stars with hydrogen, with dM/dt propto Z^alpha with alpha approx 0.8 +/- 0.2 The influence of CNO content upon WN subtypes is discussed. Earlier WN spectral types are expected (and observed) at lower metallicity due to the abundance sensitivity of NIII-IV classification diagnostics. Recent physical and chemical …
We investigate the influence of both a new generation of low-temperature opacities and of various amounts of alpha-element enhancements on stellar evolution models. New stellar models with two different alpha-element mixtures and two sets of appropriate opacity tables are computed and compared. The influence of the different mixtures as well as that of the improved generation of opacity tables is investigated. It is found that around solar metallicity the new opacity tables have a drastic influence on stellar temperatures, which is mainly an effect of the new low-temperature tables, and not of…
Galactic chemical evolution model calculations indicate that there should be considerable scatter in the observed N/O ratios at a fixed metallicity (O/H) for galaxies with very low metallicities due to the delayed release of primary N from intermediate mass stars relative to that of O from short-lived massive stars. Moreover, the scatter should increase progressively toward decreasing metallicity. Such effects have not been convincingly demonstrated by observations of H II regions in nearby metal-poor galaxies, raising doubts about the time-delay model of primary N production. Pettini et al an…
We present the results of a survey for 21-cm absorption in four never previously searched damped Lyman-alpha absorption systems (DLAs) with the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope. We add our results to other recent studies in order to address the important issues regarding the detection of cold gas, through 21-cm absorption, in DLAs: Although, due to the DLAs identified with spiral galaxies, there is a mix of spin temperature/covering factor ratios at low redshift, two recent high redshift end points confirm that this ratio does not generally rise over the whole redshift range searched (up t…
We present the results of a 0.86 square degree CCD photometric survey of the open cluster NGC 2516, which has an age of about 150 Myr and may have a much lower metallicity than the similarly-aged Pleiades. We select a preliminary catalogue of 1254 low mass (between 0.2 and 2.0M_{sun}) cluster candidates, of which about 70--80 percent are expected to be genuine. The mass function is metallicity dependent, but consistent with a Salpeter-like law (dN/dlog M ~ M^{-alpha}, alpha=+1.47+/-0.11 or alpha=+1.67+/-0.11 for solar and half-solar metallicities) between 0.7 and 3.0M_{sun}. At lower masses (b…
A correlation between the metallicity, [M/H], and rest-frame MgII equivalent width, EW, is found from 49 DLAs and strong sub-DLAs drawn from the literature over the redshift range 0.2<z_abs<2.6. The correlation is significant at 4.2 sigma and improves to 4.7 sigma when the mild evolution of [M/H] with redshift is taken into account. Even when including only the 26 DLAs (i.e. excluding sub-DLAs) which have Zn metallicities and EW>0.7A, the correlation remains at >3 sigma significance. Since the MgII2796 transition is predominantly saturated in DLAs (which always have EW greater than 0.3A), EW i…
Observations of low mean metallicity of damped Lyman-alpha (DLA) quasar absorbers at all redshifts studied appear to contradict the predictions for the global mean interstellar metallicity in galaxies from cosmic chemical evolution models. On the other hand, a number of metal-rich sub-DLA systems have been identified recently, and the fraction of metal-rich sub-DLAs appears to be considerably larger than that of metal-rich DLAs, especially at z < 1.5. In view of this, here we investigate the evolution of metallicity in sub-DLAs. We find that the mean Zn metallicity of the observed sub-DLAs may…
We compute population synthesis models for the variation of H-alpha absorption indices (HaA and HaF), as a function of age and metallicity in old stellar systems. The models are based on the STELIB spectral library, and defined at resolution of 3 Angstrom FWHM. The indices are found to be highly sensitive to age variation, with only moderate response to metallicity. For galaxies uncontaminated by nebular emission, our HaA index is more powerful in breaking the age/metallicity degeneracy than H-beta or H-gamma_F. Using a sample of red cluster galaxies carefully selected to exclude objects with …
Long-slit spectra have been obtained with the Keck telescope for a sample of 11 early-type galaxies covering a wide range in luminosity and hence mass. Rotation velocity and velocity dispersions, together with 19 Lick line-strength gradients have been measured, to, on average, two effective radii. Stellar population models have been used to derive ages, metallicities and alpha/Fe abundances along the radius. We find that line-strength gradients are due, mainly, to variations of the total metallicity with the radius. We also find both, positive and negative, although small, variations in the [a…
Relative elemental abundances, and in particular the alpha/Fe ratio, are an important diagnostic tool of the chemical evolution of damped Ly alpha systems (DLAs). The S/Zn ratio is not affected by differential dust depletion and is an excellent estimator of the alpha/Fe ratio. We report 6 new determinations of sulphur abundance in DLAs at zabs greater than or equal to 2 with already known zinc abundances. The combination with extant data from the literature provides a measure of the S/Zn abundance ratio for a total of 11 high redshift DLA systems. The observed [S/Zn] ratios do not show the cha…
We present a study of the early build-up of dust in high redshift galaxies. The study is based on the analysis of 38 Damped Ly alpha systems (DLAs) for which we derive the fraction of iron atoms in dust form, f_{Fe}. The sample is representative of metal-poor galaxies in the redshift range 0.6 </= z </= 3.4 selected on the basis of their absorption HI column density (N(HI) >/= 2 x 10^{20} atoms cm^{-2}). We find that the dust fraction increases with metallicity, from f_{Fe}~0 at [Fe/H] ~ -2 dex, up to f_{Fe} ~ 0.9 at solar metallicity; the increase is fast below [Fe/H] ~ -1 dex and mild at hig…
This paper is a further step in the investigation of the morphology of the color-magnitude diagram of Galactic globular clusters, and the fine-tuning of theoretical models, made possible by the recent observational efforts to build homogeneous photometric databases. In particular, we examine here the calibration of the morphological parameter W(HB) vs. metallicity, originally proposed by Brocato et al. (1998), which essentially measures the color position of the red-giant branch. We show that the parameter can be used to have a first-order estimate of the cluster metallicity, since the dispers…
We present a preliminary study of the metallicity of low-redshift Lyman alpha absorbers from the HST/STIS spectrum of 3C273. Using a pixel-based shift-and-coadd technique, we compare observations to carefully-constructed mock quasar spectra from a cosmological hydrodynamic simulation. We place an upper limit of [C/H]<-1.5 at >90% confidence using two Ly-alpha absorbers with N_HI>10^14 cm^-2, from the fact that we see little absorption near the expected CIV positions, whereas the artificial spectra predict significant absorption. We assume a Haardt & Madau (quasar-based) ionizing background spe…
An analysis of ages, metallicities, and [alpha/Fe] ratios of globular cluster systems in early-type galaxies is presented, based on Lick index measurements summarized in Puzia et al. (2004, Paper I of this series). In the light of calibration and measurement uncertainties, age-metallicity degeneracy, and the relative dynamic range of Lick indices, as well as systematics introduced by abundance ratio variations (in particular variations of [alpha/Fe] ratios), we find that the most reliable age indicator for our dataset is a combination of the Lick Balmer-line indices HgammaA, Hbeta, and HdeltaA…
We report the detection of H_2, CI, CI*, CI** and Cl I lines in a near Solar-metallicity ([Zn/H]=-0.13) damped Lyman-alpha (DLA) system at z_abs=1.962 observed on the line of sight to the quasar Q 0551-366. The iron-peak elements, X=Fe, Cr and Mn are depleted compared to zinc, [X/Zn] -0.8, probably because they are tied up onto dust grains. Among the three detected H_2-bearing clouds, spanning 55 km s^-1 in velocity space, we derive a total molecular hydrogen column density N(H_2)=2.6x10^17 cm^-2 and a mean molecular fraction f=2N(H_2)/(2N(H_2)+N(HI))=1.7x10^-3. The depletion of heavy elements…
We investigate the [OII] emission-line as a star formation rate (SFR) indicator using integrated spectra of 97 galaxies from the Nearby Field Galaxies Survey (NFGS). The sample includes all Hubble types and contains SFRs ranging from 0.01 to 100 Msun/yr. We compare the Kennicutt [OII] and H-alpha SFR calibrations and show that there are two significant effects which produce disagreement between SFR[OII] and SFR(H-alpha): reddening and metallicity. Differences in the ionization state of the ISM do not contribute significantly to the observed difference between SFR([OII]) and SFR(H-alpha) for th…
We have examined the metal enrichment of the intergalactic medium (IGM) based on a galactic wind model. A galactic wind driven by supernovae brings metallic gas to the IGM but not so far beyond the gravitational potential. The expanding velocity of the outflow depends on the star formation timescale. Examining 3D calculation for the IGM in CDM model, we find that only 10 % region has metallicity larger than $10^{-2}Z_{\odot}$ at $z=3$. Wide range of the IGM metallicity produces variety of CIV column densities for a fixed HI column density.
This work explores in detail the relation between the 8 micron and the Pa-alpha emissions for 122 HII regions identified in a sample of 10 low-z LIRGs with nearly constant metallicity (12 + log (O/H) ~ 8.8). We use Gemini/T-ReCS high-spatial resolution (<~ 0.4" ~ 120 pc for the average distance of 60 Mpc of our sample) mid-infrared imaging (at 8.7 micron or 10.3 micron) together with HST/NICMOS continuum and Pa-alpha images. The LIRG HII regions extend the L_8micron vs. L_Pa-alpha relation found for HII knots in the high-metallicity SINGS galaxies by about two orders of magnitude to higher lum…
Damped Lyman-alpha absorption systems found in the spectra of high redshift quasars are believed to trace the interstellar gas in high redshift galaxies. In this paper, we study the elemental abundances of C, N, O, Al, Si, S, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, and Zn in a sample of 14 damped Lyman-alpha systems using high quality echelle spectra of quasars obtained with the 10m Keck telescope. These abundances are combined with similar measurements in the literature in order to investigate the chemical evolution of damped Lyman-alpha galaxies in the redshift range 0.7<z<4.4. Among the things investigated are: th…
It has been proposed that very massive stars (VMSs) dominated heavy element production until a metallicity threshold corresponding to [Fe/H]=-3 was reached. This results in a prompt (P) inventory of elements, the abundances of which were determined from observations of Galactic halo stars with [Fe/H]=-3. We calculate Omega_P(E) from the P inventory for a large number of elements in the IGM. Using the available data on Omega(E_ion) for C IV, O VI, and Si IV in Ly alpha systems, we find that the ionization fractions calculated from Omega(E_ion)/Omega_P(E) are, within reasonable uncertainties, co…
We report the detection of a Broad Absorption Line (BAL) outflow in the spectrum of Tol 1037-2703 with three main BALs at 36000, 25300 and 22300~\kms outflow velocities. Although the overall flow is dominated by high ionization lines like and C IV, the gas of highest velocity shows absorption from Mg I, Mg II and Fe II. Covering factor arguments suggest that the absorbing complexes are physically associated with the QSO and have transverse dimensions smaller than that of the UV continuum emitting region (r<0.1 pc). We show that the C IV absorption at \zabs=2.082 has a covering factor $\sim$ 0.…
Damped Lyman-alpha systems (DLAs) and sub-DLAs seen toward background quasars provide the most detailed probes of elemental abundances. Somewhat paradoxically these measurements are more difficult at lower redshifts due to the atmospheric cut-off, and so a few years ago our group began a programme to study abundances at z < 1.5 in quasar absorbers. In this paper, we present new UVES observations of six additional quasar absorption line systems at z < 1.5, five of which are sub-DLAs. We find solar or above solar metallicity, as measured by the abundance of zinc, assumed not to be affected by du…
We present a study of C IV absorption in a sample of 63 damped Lyman-alpha (DLA) systems and 11 sub-DLAs in the redshift range 1.75<z_abs<3.61, using a dataset of high-resolution (6.6 km/s FWHM), high signal-to-noise VLT/UVES spectra. Narrow and broad C IV absorption line components indicate the presence of both warm, photoionized and hot, collisionally ionized gas. We report new correlations between the metallicity (measured in the neutral-phase) and each of the C IV column density, the C IV total line width, and the maximum C IV velocity. We explore the effect on these correlations of the su…
Based on detailed 2D numerical radiation hydrodynamics (RHD) calculations of time-dependent compressible convection, we have studied the dynamics and thermal structure of the convective surface layers of solar-type stars. The RHD models provide information about the convective efficiency in the superadiabatic region at the top of convective envelopes and predict the asymptotic value of the entropy of the deep, adiabatically stratified layers. This information is translated into an effective mixing-length parameter alpha suitable to construct standard stellar structure models. We validate the a…
We search for OVI absorption in a Keck HIRES spectrum of the z=3.62 quasar Q1422+231. Comparison of CIV measurements to cosmological simulations shows that \lya forest absorbers with N_HI > 10^{14.5} have [C/H]~=-2.5, for the UV background spectrum of Haardt & Madau (HM). Lower column density absorption arises in lower density gas, where OVI is the most sensitive metal tracer. Since OVI lines lie at wavelengths contaminated by Lyman series absorption, we interpret our Q1422 results by comparing to artificial spectra drawn from an SPH simulation of a Lambda-dominated CDM model. A search for dee…
We analyse a sample of 24 damped Lyman-alpha (DLA)/moderate DLA systems at 0.3<z<2.2, all with measurement of the weak MnII absorption lines, to investigate which elemental ratios could possibly be used as tracers of either dust depletion or nucleosynthesis effects. We applied a component-by-component analysis and show that the standard method which uses column densities integrated over the whole absorption profiles could substantially underestimate the abundance of rare elements relative to Fe. The apparent correlation we found between [Mn/Fe] and [Zn/Fe] cannot be accounted for by any dust d…
We present a measurement of metallicity in the Galactic center Quintuplet Cluster made using quantitative spectral analysis of two Luminous Blue Variables (LBVs). The analysis employs line-blanketed NLTE wind/atmosphere models fit to high-resolution near-infrared spectra containing lines of H, HeI, SiII, MgII, and FeII. We are able to break the H/He ratio vs. mass-loss rate degeneracy found in other LBVs and to obtain robust estimates of the He content of both objects. Our results indicate solar iron abundance and roughly twice solar abundance in the alpha-elements. These results are discussed…
We present new calibrations of the widely used H_alpha, [OII], and UV luminosity vs. star formation rate (SFR) relations. Using our evolutionary synthesis code GALEV we compute the different calibrations for 5 metallicities, from 1/50 solar up to 2.5 solar. We find significant changes in the calibrations for lower metallicities compared to the standard calibrations using solar input physics.
Abundances for alpha-elements and Fe in about 150 field subdwarfs and early subgiants with accurate parallaxes and kinematic data are used to discuss the run of abundance ratios in metal-poor stars in the solar neighborhood. Based on kinematics, we separated stars into two populations: the first one has a positive velocity of rotation around the galactic center, and it is likely to be related to the dissipational collapse of the galaxy; the second one has either negligible or negative rotational velocity, and it is likely related to an accretion component. The two populations show a large over…
We apply the phenomenological model used to explain the abundances of Fe and r-process elements in very metal-poor stars in the Galaxy to [Fe/H] of damped Ly alpha systems. It is assumed that the first stars formed after the Big Bang were very massive and promptly enriched the interstellar medium to [Fe/H] ~ -3, at which metallicity formation of normal stars took over. Subsequent Fe enrichment was provided by Type II supernovae. The range of [Fe/H] at a given redshift z for damped Ly alpha systems is explained by the time t* after the Big Bang at which normal star formation started in an indiv…
We address the problem of the factors contributing to a peak color trend of old metal-rich globular cluster (MRGC) populations with mass of their hosts, early-type galaxies and spheroidal subsystems of spiral ones (spheroids). The color-mass trend is often converted to a metallicity-mass trend under the assumption that age effects are small or negligible. While direct estimates of the ages of MRGC populations neither can rule out nor reliably support the populations' age trend, key data on timing of the formation of spheroids and other indirect evidence imply it in the sense: the more massive …
The damped Lyman-alpha (DLA) and sub-DLA quasar absorption lines provide powerful probes of the evolution of metals, gas, and stars in galaxies. One major obstacle in trying to understand the evolution of DLAs and sub-DLAs has been the small number of metallicity measurements at z < 1.5, an epoch spanning \~70 % of the cosmic history. In recent surveys with the Hubble Space Telescope and Multiple Mirror Telescope, we have doubled the DLA Zn sample at z < 1.5. Combining our results with those at higher redshifts from the literature, we find that the global mean metallicity of DLAs does not rise…
We compare [alpha/Fe], metallicity, and age distributions of globular clusters in elliptical, lenticular, and spiral galaxies, which we derive from Lick line index measurements. We find a large number of globular clusters in elliptical galaxies that reach significantly higher [alpha/Fe] values (>0.5) than any clusters in lenticular and spiral galaxies. Most of these extremely alpha-enriched globular clusters are old (t > 8 Gyr) and cover the metallicity range -1 <~ [Z/H] <~ 0. A comparison with supernova yield models suggests that the progenitor gas clouds of these globular clusters must have …
We present chemical abundance measurements in the z_abs=3.35045 Damped Lyman-alpha (DLA) system observed in the UVES spectrum of the BAL quasar BR 1117-1329. We measure a neutral hydrogen column density N(HI)=6.9+/-1.7*10^{20} atoms/cm2 and derive mean abundances relative to solar: [Si/H] = -1.26+/-0.13, [Fe/H]=-1.51+/-0.13, [Ni/H]=-1.57+/-0.13, [Cr/H]=-1.36+/-0.13, [Zn/H]=-1.18+/-0.13, [Al/H]>-1.25, [O/H]>-1.25 and [N/H]<-2.24. This is the third measurement of Zn, an element mildly depleted onto dust grain, at z_abs>3. The iron to zinc and chromium to zinc ratios, [Fe/Zn]=-0.33+/-0.05 and [Cr…
An accurate method to measure the abundance of high-redshift galaxies consists in the observation of absorbers along the line of sight toward a background quasar. Here, we present abundance measurements of 13 z>3 sub-Damped Lyman-alpha Systems (quasar absorbers with HI column density 19 < log N(HI) < 20.3 cm^-2) based on the high resolution observations with VLT UVES spectrograph. These observations more than double the metallicity information for sub-DLAs previously available at z>3. This new data, combined with other sub-DLA measurements from the literature, confirm the stronger metallicity …
We provide the whole set of Lick indices from CN1 to TiO2 of Simple Stellar Population models with, for the first time, variable element abundance ratios, [alpha/Fe]=0.0, 0.3, 0.5, [alpha/Ca]=-0.1, 0.0, 0.2, 0.5, and [alpha/N]=-0.5, 0.0. The models cover ages between 1 and 15 Gyr, metallicities between 1/200 and 3.5 solar. Our models are free from the intrinsic alpha/Fe bias that was imposed by the Milky Way template stars up to now, hence they reflect well-defined alpha/Fe ratios at all metallicities. The models are calibrated with Milky Way globular clusters for which metallicities and alpha…
We have observed three quasars, PKS 1127-145, Q 1331+171 and Q0054+144, with the ACIS-S aboard the Chandra X-ray Observatory, in order to measure soft X-ray absorption associated with intervening 21-cm and damped Ly$α$ absorbers. For PKS 1127-145, we detect absorption which, if associated with an intervening z_{abs}=0.312 absorber, implies a metallicity of 23% solar. If the absorption is not at z_{abs}=0.312, then the metallicity is still constrained to be less than 23% solar. The advantage of the X-ray measurement is that the derived metallicity is insensitive to ionization, inclusion of an a…
We present the first resolved study of the radio continuum properties of I Zw 18, the dwarf galaxy with the lowest known nebular metal abundance in the local universe. New Very Large Array radio continuum images at 20 and 3.6 cm are compared to various Hubble Space Telescope images, and we find a striking morphological similarity between high-resolution H alpha and short wavelength radio continuum emission, especially in the H alpha shell in the northwest region. We separate thermal and nonthermal components of the emission, and find a large synchrotron halo surrounding the galaxy. Comparison …
