Following our recent interest in metamaterial-based devices supporting resonant tunneling, energy squeezing and supercoupling through narrow waveguide channels and bends, here we analyze the fundamental physical mechanisms behind this phenomenon using a transmission-line model. These theoretical findings extend our theory, allowing us to take fully into account frequency dispersion and losses and revealing the substantial differences between this unique tunneling phenomenon and higher-frequency Fabry-Perot resonances. Moreover, they represent the foundations for other possibilities to realize tunneling through arbitrary waveguide bends, both in E and H planes of polarization, waveguide connections and sharp abruptions and to obtain analogous effects with geometries arguably simpler to realize.
In this work, we study the electrodynamics of metamaterials that consist of resonant non-magnetic inclusions embedded in an epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) host medium. It is shown that the inclusions can be designed in such a way that both the effective permittivity and permeability of the composite structure are simultaneously zero. Two different metamaterial configurations are studied and analyzed in detail. For a particular class of problems, it is analytically proven that such matched zero-index metamaterials may help improving the transmission through a waveguide bend, and that the scattering pa…
In this work, we investigate the response of epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) metamaterials and plasmonic materials to electromagnetic source excitation. The use of these media for tailoring the phase of radiation pattern of arbitrary sources is proposed and analyzed numerically and analytically for some canonical geometries. In particular, the possibility of employing planar layers, cylindrical shells or other more complex shapes made of such materials in order to isolate two regions of space and to tailor the phase pattern in one region, fairly independent of the excitation shape present in the other…
Titanium Oxynitride (TiOxNy) thin films are fabricated using reactive magnetron sputtering. The mechanism of their growth formation is explained and their optical properties are presented. The films grown when the level of residual Oxygen in the background vacuum was between 5E-9Torr to 20E-9Torr exhibit double Epsilon-Near-Zero (2-ENZ) behaviour with ENZ1 and ENZ2 wavelengths tunable in the 700-850 nm and in the 1100-1350 nm spectral ranges, respectively. Samples fabricated when the level of residual Oxygen in the background vacuum was above 2E-8Torr exhibit non-metallic behaviour, while the …
Optomechanics deals with the control and applications of mechanical effects of light that stems from the redistribution of photon momenta in light scattering. Here, we investigate, analytically and numerically, optical forces on polarizable particles in proximity of epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) metamaterials. We look at the general features of the repulsive-attractive optomechanics from the nano to the microscale exploiting different theoretical methods (dipole approximation, finite elements calculations, transition (T-)matrix). We discuss the role of realistic layered materials, as our ENZ substra…
Epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) materials such as indium tin oxide (ITO), have recently emerged as a new platform to enhance optical nonlinearities. Here we report a theoretical and experimental study on the origin of nonlinearities in ITO thin films that are dominated by two mechanisms based on intraband and interband transitions. We show that there are two competing factors that jointly contribute to a spectrally-invertible nonlinearity of ITO near its ENZ region i.e. the non-parabolicity of the band structure that results in a larger effective mass in the intraband transition and the Fermi energy s…
Integration of the next generation of photonic structures with electronic and optical on-chip components requires the development of effective methods for confining and controlling light in subwavelength volumes. Several techniques enabling light coupling to sub-wavelength objects have recently been proposed, including grating-, and composite-based solutions. However, experi-mental realization of these couplers involves complex fabrication with \sim 10nm resolution in three dimensions. One promising alternative to complex coupling structures involves materials with vanishingly small dielectric…
Epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) materials have shown significant potential for nonlinear optical applications due to their ultrafast hot carriers and consequent optical nonlinearity enhancement. Modified poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) films show metallic characteristics and a resultant ENZ wavelength near 1550nm through polar solvent treatment and annealing. The metallic PEDOT film exhibits an intrinsic optical nonlinear response that is comparable to gold and 100-fold higher than typical inorganic semiconductor ENZ materials due to π-conjugated delocalized electrons. Hot carriers generate a…
We report on the optical and physical characterization of metallic nanowire (NW) metamaterials fabricated by electrodeposition of ~30 nm diameter gold nanowires in nano-porous anodic aluminum oxide. We observe a uniaxial anisotropic dielectric response for the NW metamaterials that displays both epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) and epsilon-near-pole (ENP) resonances. We show that a fundamental difference in the behavior of NW-metamaterials from metal-dielectric multilayer (ML) metamaterials is the differing directions of the epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) and epsilon-near-pole (ENP) dielectric responses relat…

Compared to artificial metamaterials, where nano-fabrication complexities and finite-size inclusions can hamper the desired electromagnetic response, several natural materials like van der Waals crystals hold great promise for designing efficient nanophotonic devices in the optical range. Here, we investigate the unusual optical response of NiTe$_2$, a van der Waals crystal and a type-II Dirac semimetal hosting Lorentz-violating Dirac fermions. By {\it ab~initio~} density functional theory modeling, we show that NiTe$_2$ harbors multiple topological photonic regimes for evanescent waves (such …
In this paper, we discussed the current experiments on the tunneling effect of electromagnetic energy through narrow channels of $ε$-near-zero(ENZ) medium in the microwave range. Using the finite element method, we carried out a full wave simulation of the two kinds of experimental configurations at present. It was shown that the ability of the electromagnetic waves penetrating into the ENZ medium is very necessary. The present experimental setups only using metamaterial-filled narrow channel in the configuration of parallel plate waveguides are unlikely to realize effective tunneling. Contrar…
In this work, we investigate the detailed theory of the supercoupling, anomalous tunneling effect, and field confinement originally identified in [M. Silveirinha, N. Engheta, Phys. Rev. Lett. 97, 157403, (2006)], where we demonstrated the possibility of using materials with permittivity near zero to drastically improve the transmission of electromagnetic energy through a narrow irregular channel with very subwavelength transverse cross-section. Here, we present additional physical insights, describe new applications of the tunneling effect in relevant waveguide scenarios (e.g., the "perfect" o…

Motivated by the physics literature on "photonic doping" of scatterers made from "epsilon-near-zero" (ENZ) matrials, we consider how the scattering of time-harmonic TM electromagnetic waves by a cylindrical ENZ region $Ω\times \mathbb{R}$ is affected by the presence of a "dopant" $D \subset Ω$ in which the dielectric permittivity is not near zero. Mathematically, this reduces to analysis of a 2D Helmholtz equation $\mathrm{div}\, (a(x)\nabla u) + k^2 u = f$ with a piecewise-constant, complex valued coefficient $a$ that is nearly infinite (say $a = \frac{1}δ$ with $δ\approx 0$) in $Ω\setminus \…
Recent experiments have shown the viability of the metamaterial approach to dielectric response engineering for moderately enhancing the transition temperature, Tc, of a superconductor. In this report, we demonstrate the use of Al2O3-coated aluminium nanoparticles to form the recently proposed epsilon near zero (ENZ) core-shell metamaterial superconductor with a Tc that is three times that of pure aluminium. IR reflectivity measurements confirm the predicted metamaterial modification of the dielectric function thus demonstrating the efficacy of the ENZ metamaterial approach to Tc engineering. …
