We describe the T=0 quantum phase transition in heavy fermion systems as an orbital selective Mott transition (OSMT) using a cluster extension of dynamical mean field theory. This transition is characterized by the emergence of a new intermediate energy scale corresponding to the opening of a pseudogap and the vanishing of the low-energy hybridization between light and heavy electrons. We identify the fingerprint of Mott physics in heavy electron systems with the appearance of surfaces in momentum space where the self-energy diverges and we derive experimental consequences of this scenario for photoemission, compressibility, optical conductivity, susceptibility and specific heat.
We have studied the doping-driven orbital-selective Mott transition in multi-band Hubbard models with equal band width in the presence of crystal field splitting. Crystal field splitting lifts one of the bands while leaving the others degenerate. We use single-site dynamical mean-field theory combined with continuous time quantum Monte Carlo impurity solver to calculate a phase diagram as a function of total electron filling $N$ and crystal field splitting $Δ$. We find a large region of orbital-selective Mott phase in the phase diagram when the doping is large enough. Further analysis indicate…
A recent paper by Bluemer et al. [cond-mat/0609758] again criticizes earlier QMC/DMFT results by Liebsch [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 70}, 165103 (2004)]. This criticism is shown to be unfounded.
We present electronic structure calculations of a CrO$_{2}$ compound in the paramagnetic state within the computational scheme of density-functional theory combined with dynamical mean-field theory. We find that CrO$_{2}$ in the paramagnetic state is a strongly-correlated Hund's metal with mixed-valent Cr ions. At high temperatures, CrO$_{2}$ shows an orbital-selective Mott phase, in which the Cr $d_{xy}$ orbital is Mott-localized while the other Cr $t_{2g}$ $d$ orbitals remain itinerant. When the temperature is lowered, the orbital-selective Mott state is found to evolve into a Kondo-like hea…
In the present paper, we systematically studied the possible Orbital selective Mott transition (OSMT) in the $t_{2g}$ system, which has three orbital degeneracy. The slave Boson mean field theory is generalized to the three band systems with full Hund's rule coupling including spin flip and pair hopping terms. A new type of Mott transition which is driven by the crystal field splitting or the lattice distortion is found is this model. We argue that this new type of Mott transition may relate to the puzzling phase in $Sr_{x}Ca_{2-x}RuO_4$.
We show within the slave boson technique, that the Anderson lattice model exhibits a Kondo breakdown quantum critical point (KB-QCP) where the hybridization goes to zero at zero temper- ature. At this fixed point, the f-electrons experience as well a selective Mott transition separating a local-moment phase from a Kondo-screened phase. The presence of a multi-scale QCP in the An- derson lattice in the absence of magnetism is discussed in the context of heavy fermion compounds. This study is the first evidence for a selective Mott transition in the Anderson lattice.
The microscopic mechanism of the metal-insulator transition is studied by orbital-resolved 51V NMR spectroscopy in a prototype of the quasi-one-dimensional system V6O13. We uncover that the transition involves a site-selective d orbital order lifting twofold orbital degeneracy in one of the two VO6 chains. The other chain leaves paramagnetic moments on the singly occupied dxy orbital across the transition. The two chains respectively stabilize an orbital-assisted spin-Peierls state and an antiferromagnetic long-range order in the ground state. The site-selective Mott transition may be a source…
We investigate the Mott transitions in two-band Hubbard models with different bandwidths. Applying dynamical mean field theory, we discuss the stability of itinerant quasi-particle states in each band. We demonstrate that separate Mott transitions occur at different Coulomb interaction strengths in general, which merge to a single transition only under special conditions. This kind of behavior may be relevant for the physics of the single-layer ruthenates, Ca$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$RuO$_4$.
We use the slave-spin mean-field approach to study particle-hole symmetric one- and two-band Hubbard models in presence of Hund's coupling interaction. By analytical analysis of Hamiltonian, we show that the locking of the two orbitals vs.\,orbital-selective Mott transition can be formulated within a Landau-Ginzburg framework. By applying the slave-spin mean-field to impurity problem, we are able to make a correspondence between impurity and lattice. We also consider the stability of the orbital selective Mott phase to the hybridization between the orbitals and study the limitations of the sla…
The dynamical mean-field theory is employed to study the orbital-selective Mott transition (OSMT) of the two-orbital Hubbard model with nearest neighbor hopping and next-nearest neighbor (NNN) hopping. The NNN hopping breaks the particle-hole symmetry at half filling and gives rise to an asymmetric density of states (DOS). Our calculations show that the broken symmetry of DOS benefits the OSMT, where the region of the orbital-selective Mott phase significantly extends with the increasing NNN hopping integral. We also find that Hund's rule coupling promotes OSMT by blocking the orbital fluctuat…
We characterize the low-energy physics of the two-orbital Hubbard model in the orbital-selective Mott phase, in which one band is metallic and the other insulating. Using dynamical mean-field theory with the numerical renormalization group at zero temperature, we show that this phase has a ferromagnetic instability for any nonzero Hund's rule exchange interaction, which can be understood in terms of an effective spin-1 Kondo Hamiltonian. The metallic band therefore behaves as a singular Fermi liquid for which the self-energy has a logarithmic singularity at the Fermi energy.
Quantum phase transitions in metals are often accompanied by violations of Fermi liquid behavior in the quantum critical regime. Particularly fascinating are transitions beyond the Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson concept of a local order parameter. The breakdown of the Kondo effect in heavy-fermion metals constitutes a prime example of such a transition. Here, the strongly correlated f electrons become localized and disappear from the Fermi surface, implying that the transition is equivalent to an orbital-selective Mott transition, as has been discussed for multi-band transition-metal oxides. In this a…
We study a multi-band Hubbard model in its orbital selective Mott phase, in which localized electrons in a narrow band coexist with itinerant electrons in a wide band. The low-energy physics of this phase is shown to be closely related to that of a generalized double-exchange model. The high-temperature disordered phase thus differs from a Fermi liquid, and displays a finite scattering rate of the conduction electrons at the Fermi level, which depends continuously on the spin anisotropy.
The effect of interorbital hopping on the orbital selective Mottness in a two-band correlation system is investigated by using the dynamical mean-field theory with the Lanczos method as impurity solver. We construct the phase diagram of the two-orbital Hubbard model with interorbital hopping ($t_{12})$, where the orbital selective Mott phases (OSMP) show different evolution trends. We find that the negative interorbital hopping ($t_{12}<0$) can enhance the OSMP regime upon tuning the effective bandwidth ratio. On the contrary, for the cases with positive interorbital hopping ($t_{12}>0$), the …
Mott transitions in the two-orbital Hubbard model with different bandwidths are investigated at finite temperatures. By means of the self-energy functional approach, we discuss the stability of the intermediate phase with one orbital localized and the other itinerant, which is caused by the orbital-selective Mott transition (OSMT). It is shown that the OSMT realizes two different coexistence regions at finite temperatures in accordance with the recent results of Liebsch. We further find that the particularly interesting behavior emerges around the special condition $U=U'$ and J=0, which includ…
We study the phase transition in Cu-substituted iron-based superconductors with a new developed real-space Green's function method. We find that Cu substitution has strong effect on the orbital-selective Mott transition introduced by the Hund's rule coupling. The redistribution of the orbital occupancy which is caused by the increase of the Hund's rule coupling, gives rise to the Mott-Hubbard metal-insulator transition in the half-filled $d_{xy}$ orbital. We also find that more and more electronic states appear inside that Mott gap of the $d_{xy}$ orbital with the increase of Cu substitution, …
The anisotropic degenerate two-orbital Hubbard model is studied within dynamical mean-field theory at low temperatures. High-precision calculations on the basis of a refined quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) method reveal that two distinct orbital-selective Mott transitions occur for a bandwidth ratio of 2 even in the absence of spin-flip contributions to the Hund exchange. The second transition -- not seen in earlier studies using QMC, iterative perturbation theory, and exact diagonalization -- is clearly exposed in a low-frequency analysis of the self-energy and in local spectra.
Electrons in a simple correlated system behave either as itinerant charge carriers or as localized moments. However, there is growing evidence for the coexistence of itinerant electrons and local moments in transition metals with nearly degenerate $d$-orbitals. It demands one or more selective electron orbitals undergo the Mott transition while the others remain itinerant. Here we report the first observation of such an orbital selective Mott transition (OSMT) in Ca$_{1.8}$Sr$_{0.2}$RuO$_4$ by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). While we observed two sets of dispersing bands and…
We examine whether the Mott transition of a half-filled, two-orbital Hubbard model with unequal bandwidths occurs simultaneously for both bands or whether it is a two-stage process in which the orbital with narrower bandwith localizes first (giving rise to an intermediate `orbital-selective' Mott phase). This question is addressed using both dynamical mean-field theory, and a representation of fermion operators in terms of slave quantum spins, followed by a mean-field approximation (similar in spirit to a Gutzwiller approximation). In the latter approach, the Mott transition is found to be orb…
Using high-precision quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations within the framework of dynamical mean field theory (DMFT), we show that the anisotropic degenerate two-orbital Hubbard model contains two consecutive orbital-selective Mott transitions (OSMTs) even in the absence of spin-flip terms and pair-hopping processes. In order to reveal the second transition we carefully analyze the low-frequency part of the self-energy and the local spectral functions. This paper extends our previous work to lower temperatures. We discuss the nature - in particular the order - of both Mott transitions and lis…
Pyrochlore oxides are fascinating systems where strong, multi-orbital correlations in concert with geometrical frustration give rise to unanticipated physical properties. The detailed mechanism of the insulator-metal transitions (IMT) underpinning these phenomena is, however, ill-understood in general. Motivated thereby, we study the IMT in the pyrochlore ${\rm Hg_{2}Ru_{2}O_{7}}$ using LDA+DMFT. In contrast to the well-known examples of Mott transitions in TMO, we show that, in the negative charge-transfer situation characteristic of \hg, self-doping plays a crucial role in the emergence of a…
While a specific kind of strange metal is increasingly found to be the "normal" states in a wide variety of unconventional superconductors, its microscopic origin is presently a hotly debated enigma. Using dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) based on hybridization expansion of continuous-time quantum Monte-Carlo (CTQMC) solver for an extended two-band Hubbard model (2BHM), we investigate the conditions underlying the emergence of such a metal. Specifically, we tie strange metallicity to an orbital-selective Mottness in 2BHM or momentum-selective Mott phase (OSMP) in 2D Hubbard models inspired b…
We calculate the spectra and spin susceptibilities of a Hubbard model with two bands having different bandwidths but the same on-site interaction, with parameters close to the orbital-selective Mott transition, using dynamical mean-field theory. If the Hund's rule coupling is sufficiently strong, one common energy scale emerges which characterizes both the location of kinks in the self-energy and extrema of the diagonal spin susceptibilities. A physical explanation of this energy scale is derived from a Kondo-type model. We infer that for multi-band systems local spin dynamics rather than spec…
The anisotropic two-orbital Hubbard model is investigated at low temperatures using high-precision quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations within dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). We demonstrate that two distinct orbital-selective Mott transitions (OSMTs) occur for a bandwidth ratio of 2 even without spin-flip contributions to the Hund exchange, and we quantify numerical errors in earlier QMC data which had obscured the second transition. The limit of small inter-orbital coupling is introduced via a new generalized Hamiltonian and studied using QMC and Potthoff's self-energy functional method,…
We present the influence of spin correlation on the metal-insulator transitions (MIT) in two-orbital Hubbard models by the Kotliar-Ruckenstein slave-boson approach. In the asymmetric half-filling situation, the two orbits simultaneously transit from conducting to insulating states with the increase of Coulomb correlation, accompanied by a paramagnetic (PM)-antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition. The orbital selective Mott transition found in the PM condition is completely suppressed over a wide correlation range, though it may exist in the systems away from half-filling. In the insulating state, t…
Quasi-particle spectra of the layer perovskite Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ are calculated within Dynamical Mean Field Theory for increasing values of the on-site Coulomb energy $U$. At small $U$ the planar geometry splits the $t_{2g}$ bands near $E_F$ into a wide, two-dimensional $d_{xy}$ band and two narrow, nearly one-dimensional $d_{xz,yz}$ bands. At larger $U$, however, the spectral distribution of these states exhibit similar correlation features, suggesting a common metal-insulator transition for all $t_{2g}$ bands at the same critical $U$.
Using a combination of th local-density approximtion (LDA) and dynamicla mean-field theory (DMFT) calculations, we explore the correlated electronic structure of a member of the layered Iron oxychalcogenide Na_{2}Fe_{2}OSe_{2}. We find that the parent compund is a multi-orbital Mott insulator. Surprisingly, and somewhat reminiscent of the doped high-T_{c} cuprates, carrier localization is found to persist upon weak hole doping because the chemical potential lies in a gap structure wit almost vanishing density-of-states (DOS). On the other hand, in remarkable contrast, electron doping drives an…
By applying dynamical mean-field theory in combination with exact diagonalization at zero temperature to a half-filled Hubbard model with two orbitals having distinct noninteracting densities of states, we show that an orbital selective Mott transition (OSMT) will take place even without crystal field splitting, differences in bandwidth and orbital degeneracy. We find that formation of local spin triplet states followed by a two-stage breakdown of the Kondo effect, rather than decoupling of charge degrees of freedom among different orbitals, is the underlying physics for the OSMT. The relevanc…
We investigate the Mott transitions in the multi-orbital Hubbard model at half-filling by means of the self-energy functional approach. The phase diagrams are obtained at finite temperatures for the Hubbard model with up to four-fold degenerate bands. We discuss how the first-order Mott transition points $U_{c1}$ and $U_{c2}$ as well as the critical temperature $T_c$ depend on the orbital degeneracy. It is elucidated that enhanced orbital fluctuations play a key role to control the Mott transitions in the multi-orbital Hubbard model.
We study orbital Mott transition in two dimensional pyrochlore lattice, using a two orbital Hubbard model with only inter-orbital electronic hopping. We use a real space Monte Carlo based approach to study the model at finite temperature, and establish temperature-interaction phase diagrams that highlight the Mott transition, orbital ordering, and spectral trends, and possible window of pseudo gap. Due to only inter-orbital hopping, the Mott insulator `generates' ferro exchange resulting in ferro-orbital ordering, with T$_{corr}/t$ peaked at $\approx$ 0.2 around $U/t \approx 6$. The optical co…
In a Comment [cond-mat/0506138] on our recent e-print [cond-mat/0505106] Liebsch claimed "excellent correspondence" between our high-precision quantum Monte-Carlo (QMC) data for the anisotropic two-band Hubbard model with Ising type exchange couplings and his earlier QMC results. Liebsch also claimed that the sequence of two orbital-selective Mott transitions, identified by us in this model, had already been reported in his earlier work. Here we demonstrate that both claims are incorrect. We establish that Liebsch's previous QMC estimates for the quasiparticle weight Z have relative errors exc…
The two-orbital degenerate Hubbard model with distinct hopping integrals is studied by combining dynamical mean-field theory with quantum Monte Carlo simulations. The role of orbital fluctuations for the nature of the Mott transition is elucidated by examining the temperature dependence of spin, charge and orbital susceptibilities as well as the one-particle spectral function. We also consider the effect of the hybridization between the two orbitals, which is important particularly close to the Mott transition points. The introduction of the hybridization induces orbital fluctuations, resultin…
We investigate the Mott transitions in two-orbital Hubbard systems. Applying the dynamical mean field theory and the self-energy functional approach, we discuss the stability of itinerant quasi-particle states in each band. It is shown that separate Mott transitions occur at different Coulomb interaction strengths in general. On the other hand, if some special conditions are satisfied for the interactions, spin and orbital fluctuations are equally enhanced at low temperatures, resulting in a single Mott transition. The phase diagrams are obtained at zero and finite temperatures. We also addres…
We study the conductivity, density of states, and magnetic correlations of a two dimensional, two band fermion Hubbard model using determinant Quantum Monte Carlo (DQMC) simulations. We show that an orbitally selective Mott transition (OSMT) occurs in which the more weakly interacting band can be metallic despite complete localization of the strongly interacting band. The DQMC method allows us to test the validity of the use of a momentum independent self-energy which has been a central approximation in previous OSMT studies. In addition, we show that long range antiferromagnetic order (LRAFO)…
A detailed comparison of QMC/DMFT results for the non-isotropic two-band Hubbard model by Liebsch [Phys. Rev. B 70, 165103 (2004)] and C. Knecht, N. Bluemer, and P. G. J. van Dongen [cond-mat/0505106 (submitted to Phys. Rev. Lett.)] is given. Both results are shown to be in excellent agreement. Thus, the claims by Knecht et al.: ``The second transition [was] not seen in earlier studies using QMC and IPT'' and ``Our high-precision data correct earlier QMC results by Liebsch'' are shown to be unfounded.
Resonant Inelastic X-Ray Scattering (RIXS) experiments on the iron-based ladder BaFe$_2$Se$_3$ unveiled an unexpected two-peak structure associated with local orbital ($dd$) excitations in a block-type antiferromagnetic phase. A mixed character between correlated band-like and localized excitations was also reported. Here, we use the density matrix renormalization group method to calculate the momentum-resolved charge- and orbital-dynamical response functions of a multi-orbital Hubbard chain. Remarkably, our results qualitatively resemble the BaFe$_2$Se$_3$ RIXS data, while also capturing the …
Quantum orbital selective Mott (OSM) transitions are investigated within dynamical mean-field theory based on a two-orbital Hubbard model with different bandwidth at half filling. We find two distinct OSM phases both showing coexistence of itinerant electrons and localized spins, dependent on whether the Hund's coupling is full or of Ising type. The critical values and the nature of the OSM transitions are efficiently determined by entanglement entropy. We reveal that vanishing of the Kondo energy scale evidenced by absence of local spin fluctuations at low frequency in local dynamical spin su…
The recent detailed study of quasi-one-dimensional iron-based ladders, with the $3d$ iron electronic density $n = 6$, has unveiled surprises, such as orbital-selective phases. However, similar studies for $n=6$ iron chains are still rare. Here, a three-orbital electronic Hubbard model was constructed to study the magnetic and electronic properties of the quasi-one-dimensional $n=6$ iron chain Ce$_2$O$_2$FeSe$_2$, with focus on the effect of doping. Specifically, introducing the Hubbard $U$ and Hund $J_{H}$ couplings and studying the model via the density matrix renormalization group, we report…
Moiré super-potentials in two-dimensional materials allow unprecedented control of the ratio between kinetic and interaction energy. By this, they pave the way to study a wide variety of strongly correlated physics under a new light. In particular, the transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are promising candidate "quantum simulators" of the Hubbard model on a triangular lattice. Indeed, Mott and generalized Wigner crystals have been observed in such devices. Here we theoretically propose to extend this model into the multi-orbital regime by focusing on electron doped systems at filling highe…
The heavy fermion state with Kondo-hybridization (KH), usually manifested in f-electron systems with lanthanide or actinide elements, was recently discovered in several 3d transition metal compounds without f-electrons. However, KH has not yet been observed in 4d/5d transition metal compounds, since more extended 4d/5d orbitals do not usually form flat bands that supply localized electrons appropriate for Kondo pairing. Here, we report a doping- and temperature-dependent angle-resolved photoemission study on 4d Ca2-xSrxRuO4, which shows the signature of KH. We observed a spectral weight transf…
We present a theory of spin and orbital states in Mott insulator $LaTiO_3$. The spin-orbital superexchange interaction between $d^1(t_{2g})$ ions in cubic crystal suffers from a pathological degeneracy of orbital states at classical level. Quantum effects remove this degeneracy and result in the formation of the coherent ground state, in which the orbital moment of $t_{2g}$ level is fully quenched. We find a finite gap for orbital excitations. Such a disordered state of local degrees of freedom on unfrustrated, simple cubic lattice is highly unusual. Orbital liquid state naturally explains obs…
We investigate the Mott transitions in the two-orbital Hubbard model with different bandwidths. By combining dynamical mean field theory with the exact diagonalization, we discuss the stability of itinerant quasi-particle states in each band. We demonstrate that separate Mott transitions occur at different Coulomb interaction strengths in general, which merge to a single transition only under special conditions. In particular, it is clarified that the $xy$ and pair-hopping components of the Hund coupling play a key role to control the nature of the Mott transitions.
We extend previous studies on orbital-selective Mott transitions in the paramagnetic state of the half-filled degenerate two-band Hubbard model to the general doped case, using a high-precision quantum Monte Carlo dynamical mean-field theory solver. For sufficiently strong interactions, orbital-selective Mott transitions as a function of total band filling are clearly visible in the band-specific fillings, quasiparticle weights, double occupancies, and spectra. The results are contrasted with those of single-band models for similar correlation strengths.
We study the interplay of strong electron correlations and intra-triangle spin exchange at two-thirds filling of the single-orbital Hubbard model on the decorated honeycomb lattice using rotationally invariant slave bosons. We find that the spin exchange tunes between a spin-$1$ Mott insulator, a metal, and a spin-$0$ Mott insulator when the exchange is antiferromagnetic. The Mott insulators occur from effective intra-triangle multi-orbital interactions and are adiabatically connected to the ground state of an isolated triangle. An antiferromagnetic spin exchange, as determined by the Goodenou…
We study the asymmetric Hubbard model at half-filling as a generic model to describe the physics of two species of repulsively interacting fermionic cold atoms in optical lattices. We use Dynamical Mean Field Theory to obtain the paramagnetic phase diagram of the model as function of temperature, interaction strength and hopping asymmetry. A Mott transition with a region of two coexistent solutions is found for all nonzero values of the hopping asymmetry. At low temperatures the metallic phase is a heavy Fermi-liquid, qualitatively analogous to the Fermi liquid state of the symmetric Hubbard m…
We investigate the effects of crystal field splitting in a doped two-band Hubbard model with different bandwidths within dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT), using a quantum Monte Carlo impurity solver. In addition to an orbital-selective Mott phase (OSMP) of the narrow band, which is adiabatically connected with the well-studied OSMP in the half-filled case without crystal field splitting, we find, for sufficiently strong interaction and a suitable crystal field, also an OSMP of the wide band. We establish the phase diagram (in the absence of magnetic or orbital order) at moderate doping as a …
An analysis of Luttinger's theorem shows that -- contrary to recent claims -- it is not valid for a generic Mott insulator. For a two-orbital Hubbard model with two electrons per site the crossover from a non-magnetic correlated insulating phase (Mott or Kondo insulator) to a band insulator is investigated. Mott insulating phases are characterized by poles of the self-energy and corresponding zeros in the Greens functions defining a ``Luttinger surface'' which is absent for band insulators. Nevertheless, the ground states of such insulators with two electrons per unit cell are adiabatically co…
Iron-based superconductors display a variety of magnetic phases originating in the competition between electronic, orbital, and spin degrees of freedom. Previous theoretical investigations of the multi-orbital Hubbard model in one dimension revealed the existence of an orbital-selective Mott phase (OSMP) with block spin order. Recent inelastic neutron scattering (INS) experiments on the BaFe$_2$Se$_3$ ladder compound confirmed the relevance of the block-OSMP. Moreover, the powder INS spectrum reveled an unexpected structure, containing both low-energy acoustic and high-energy optical modes. He…
The localization-delocalization transition is at the heart of strong correlation physics. Recently, there is great interest in multiorbital systems where this transition can be restricted to certain orbitals, leading to an orbital-selective Mott phase (OSMP). Theoretically, the OSMP is widely studied for kinetically decoupled orbitals, but the effect of interorbital hopping remains unclear. Here, we show how nonlocal interorbital hopping leads to local hybridization in single-site dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). Under fairly general circumstances, this implies that, at zero temperature, th…
We study the interplay of crystal field splitting and Hund coupling in a two-orbital model which captures the essential physics of systems with two electrons or holes in the e_g shell. We use single site dynamical mean field theory with a recently developed impurity solver which is able to access strong couplings and low temperatures. The fillings of the orbitals and the location of phase boundaries are computed as a function of Coulomb repulsion, exchange coupling and crystal field splitting. We find that the Hund coupling can drive the system into a novel Mott insulating phase with vanishing…
We present a dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) study of the charge and orbital correlations in finite-size La$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$ (LCMO) nanoclusters. Upon nanostructuring LCMO to clusters of 3 nm diameter, the size reduction induces an insulator-to-metal transition in the high-temperature paramagnetic phase. This is ascribed to the reduction in charge disproportionation between Mn sites with different nominal valence [Das et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 107, 197202 (2011)]. Here we show that upon further reducing the system size to a few-atom nanoclusters, quantum confinement effects come into…
We study the Mott metal-insulator transition in the two-band Hubbard model with different hopping amplitudes $t_1$ and $t_2$ for the two orbitals on the two-dimensional square lattice by using {\it non-magnetic} variational wave functions, similarly to what has been considered in the limit of infinite dimensions by dynamical mean-field theory. We work out the phase diagram at half filling (i.e., two electrons per site) as a function of $R=t_2/t_1$ and the on-site Coulomb repulsion $U$, for two values of the Hund's coupling $J=0$ and $J/U=0.1$. Our results are in good agreement with previous dy…
There is increasing recognition that the multiorbital nature of the 3d electrons is important to the proper description of the electronic states in the normal state of the iron-based superconductors. Earlier studies of the pertinent multiorbital Hubbard models identified an orbital-selective Mott phase, which anchors the orbital-selective behavior seen in the overall phase diagram. An important characteristics of the models is that the orbitals are kinetically coupled -- i.e. hybridized -- to each other, which makes the orbital-selective Mott phase especially nontrivial. A U(1) slave-spin meth…
The twin issues of the nature of the normal state and competing order(s) in the iron arsenides are central to understanding their unconventional, high-Tc superconductivity. We use a combination of transport anisotropy measurements on detwinned Sr(Fe(1-x)Co(x))2As2 single crystals and local density approximation plus dynamical mean field theory (LDA + DMFT) calculations to revisit these issues. The peculiar resistivity anisotropy and its evolution with x are naturally interpreted in terms of an underlying orbital-selective Mott transition (OSMT) that gaps out the dxz or dyz states. Further, we …
We consider Mott insulators driven by periodic coherent laser radiation, using both single orbital and multi-orbital models, noting that the latter is of more interest in solid state systems. We derive general expressions for the resulting periodically driven spin models and spin-orbital models using time-dependent perturbation theory. First, we show that the effective exchange interactions of the Floquet Hamiltonians are highly tunable by the frequency, amplitude, and polarization of the laser. Second, we take the effect of finite bandwidth of excitations into account and study possible heati…
Multiorbital interactions have the capacity to produce an interesting kind of doublon-holon bound state that consists of a single-hole state in one band and a doubly-occupied state in another band. Interband doublon-holon pair excitations in the two-orbital Hubbard model are studied by using dynamical mean-field theory with the Lanczos method as the impurity solver. We find that the interband bound states may provide several in-gap quasiparticle peaks in the density of states of the narrow band in the orbital-selective Mott phase with a small Hund's rule coupling ($J$). There exists a correspo…
