The high energy resolution and low background, particularly in the hard X-ray band, of the X-ray Imaging Spectrometer onboard Suzaku provide excellent spectra of the Galactic center diffuse X-rays (GCDX). This paper reports on the results of spatially resolved spectroscopy of GCDX. The most pronounced features of GCDX are the K-shell transition lines from neutral (FeI) and He-like (FeXXV) irons at energies of 6.4keV and 6.7keV, respectively. The fluxes of these lines are non-uniformly and asymmetrically distributed with respect to Sgr A*. The 6.4keV lines are particularly bright on the positive side of the Galactic longitude (east-side) with clumpy structures. A bright clump near the GC exhibits a time variability over a timescale of a few years. Neither the 6.4keV nor 6.7keV line flux shows close proportionality to the continuum flux (5--10keV band); the 6.4keV line shows excess on the high flux side, and vice versa for the 6.7keV line. On the other hand, the sum of the 6.4keV plus 6.7keV line fluxes with a ratio of 1:2 shows good proportionality to the continuum flux, and hence we phenomenologically decomposed the continuum flux of the GCDX into the 6.4keV- and 6.7keV-associated continuums with a flux ratio of 1:2. Based on these facts, we have tried to estimate the contribution of diffuse and integrated flux of point sources to the GCDX.
The excess above 1 GeV in the energy spectrum of the diffuse Galactic gamma radiation, measured with the EGRET experiment, can be interpreted as the annihilation of Dark Matter (DM) particles. The DM is distributed in a halo around the Milky Way. Considering the directionality of the gamma ray flux it is possible to determine the halo profile. The DM within the halo has a smooth and a clumpy component. These components can have different profiles as suggested by N-body simulations and the data is indeed compatible with a NFW profile for the diffuse component and a cored profile for the clumpy c…
This paper reports the diffuse X-ray features around the Galactic center observed with Chandra. We confirm the ASCA and Ginga discoveries of the large-scale thin-thermal plasma with strong lines in the Galactic center region. In addition, many small clumps of emission lines from neutral (6.4 keV line) to He-like (6.7 keV line) irons are discovered. The 6.4 keV line clumps would be reflection nebulae, while those of the 6.7 keV line are likely SNRs. We also find emission lines of intermediate energy between 6.5-6.7 keV, which are attributable to young SNRs in non equilibrium ionization. Non-the…
We present an optical spectrum for Mrk 273x, the X-ray source 1.3' to the northeast of Mrk 273. The new spectrum indicates that the object is at a much higher redshift (0.458) than the value (0.0376) previously reported. All the detected emission lines show properties of Seyfert 2 galaxies. Mrk 273x has one of the highest X-ray and radio luminosities L_x ~ 1.1 x 10^{44} erg/s, L_{1.37 GHz} ~ 2.0 x 10^{40} erg/s among Seyfert 2 galaxies, yet it has a low neutral hydrogen column density, N_H ~ 4.4 x 10^{20}/cm^2. These properties seem difficult to explain in the unified scheme of active galactic…
AIMS: I present the Monte Carlo radiative transfer code TRADING (Transfer of RAdiation through Dust In Galaxies). The code computes self-consistently the extinction of radiation in a dusty medium (including absorption and scattering) and the dust emission. METHODS: A binary-tree adaptive grid is used for the description of the dust distribution. Dust radiation is computed at thermal equilibrium or under stochastic heating condition, for a distribution of grains of different radii and materials. The code is applied to the case of a clumpy galactic disk, including both diffuse dust and a distrib…
A key process within astronomy is the exchange of mass, momentum, and energy between diffuse plasmas in many types of astronomical sources (including planetary nebulae, wind-blown bubbles, supernova remnants, starburst superwinds, and the intracluster medium) and dense, embedded clouds or clumps. This transfer affects the large scale flows of the diffuse plasmas as well as the evolution of the clumps. I review our current understanding of mass-injection processes, and examine intermediate-scale structure and the global effect of mass-loading on a flow. I then discuss mass-loading in a variety …
The luminous unstable star (star system) eta Carinae is surrounded by an optically bright bipolar nebula, the Homunculus and a fainter but much larger nebula, the so-called outer ejecta. As images from the EINSTEIN and ROSAT satellites have shown, the outer ejecta is also visible in soft X-rays, while the central source is present in the harder X-ray bands. With our CHANDRA observations we show that the morphology and properties of the X-ray nebula are the result of shocks from fast clumps in the outer ejecta moving into a pre-existing denser circumstellar medium. An additional contribution to…
The background field of the Tadpole galaxy image taken with the Hubble Space Telescope ACS contains 87 clump-clusters that are probably low-inclination versions of the 69 chain galaxies we found in a previous paper. This conclusion follows from the similarity in colors and apparent magnitudes of the brightest clumps in the clump-clusters and chain galaxies, and from the similarity between the distribution of axial ratios for the combined sample and the distribution for normal disk galaxies. These distributions are consistent with chains and clump-clusters being disks viewed at random angles wi…
We describe the anisotropy of dark matter clump distribution caused by tidal destruction of clumps in the Galactic disk. A tidal destruction of clumps with orbit planes near the disk plane occurs more efficiently as compared with destruction of clumps at near-polar orbits. A corresponding annihilation of dark matter particles in small-scale clumps produces the anisotropic gamma-ray signal with respect to the Galactic disk. This anisotropy is rather small, 9%, and superimposed on that due to off-centering position of the Sun in the Galaxy. The anisotropy of annihilation signal with respect to t…
According to high resolution cold dark matter (CDM) simulations, large virialized halos are formed through the constant merging of smaller halos formed at earlier times. In particular, the halo of our Galaxy may have hundreds of dark matter clumps. The annihilation of dark matter particles such as the neutralino in these clumps generates $γ$-ray fluxes that can potentially be detected by future experiments such as GLAST. We find that, depending on the parameters of the clump density profile and on the distribution of clumps in the Galactic halo, the contribution to the diffuse $γ$-ray backgrou…
This paper reports on the first results of the Suzaku observation in the Sgr C region. We detected four diffuse clumps with strong line emission at 6.4keV, Ka from neutral or low-ionized Fe. One of them, M359.38-0.00, is newly discovered with Suzaku. The X-ray spectra of the two bright clumps, M359.43-0.07 and M359.47-0.15, after subtracting the Galactic center diffuse X-ray emission (GCDX), exhibit strong Ka line from FeI with large equivalent widths (EWs) of 2.0-2.2keV and clear Kb of FeI. The GCDX in the Sgr C region is composed of the 6.4keV- and 6.7keV-associated components. These are phe…
It was shown by dos Santos et al. the importance of Alfvén waves to explain the winds of Wolf-Rayet stars. We investigate here the possible importance of Alfvén waves in the creation of inhomogeneities in the winds of early-type stars. The observed infrared emission (at the base of the wind) of early-type stars is often larger than expected. The clumping explains this characteristic in the wind, increasing the mean density and hence the emission measure, making possible to understand the observed infrared, as well as the observed enhancement in the blue wing of the $H_α$ line. In this study, w…
We have mapped the dust continuum emission from the molecular cloud covering a region of 28pcx94pc associated with the well-known HII region RCW 106 at 1.2 mm using SIMBA on SEST. The observations, having an HPBW of 24" (0.4 pc), reveal 95 clumps. Owing to the higher sensitivity to colder dust and higher angular resolution the present observations identify new emission features and also show that most of the IRAS sources in this region consist of multiple dust emission peaks. The detected millimeter sources (MMS) include on one end the exotic MMS5 (associated with IRAS 16183-4958, one of the b…
We present the results from three dimensional hydrodynamical simulations of decaying high-speed turbulence in dense molecular clouds. We compare our results, which include a detailed cooling function, molecular hydrogen chemistry and a limited C and O chemistry, to those previously obtained for decaying isothermal turbulence. After an initial phase of shock formation, power-law decay regimes are uncovered, as in the isothermal case. We find that the turbulence decays faster than in the isothermal case because the average Mach number remains higher, due to the radiative cooling. The total therm…
We present spectroscopic observations of diffuse ionized gas (DIG) in M33 near the HII region NGC 604. We present the first detection of [OI] 6300 in the DIG of M33, one of the critical lines for distinguishing photo- from shock ionization models. We measure [OI]/Ha in the range of 0.04 to 0.10 and an increase in this ratio with decreasing emission measure. Our measurements of [SII]/Ha and [NII]/Ha also rise with decreasing emission measure, while our [OIII]/Hb measurements remain fairly constant. We have one tentative detection of He I in the region of brightest emission measure, with a ratio…
The metal deficient starburst galaxy IZw18 has been observed with FUSE in a search for H2 molecules. The spectrum obtained with an aperture covering the full galaxy shows no absorption lines of diffuse H2 at the radial velocity of the galaxy. The upper limit for the diffuse H2 column density is found to be very low: N(H2) <~ 10^15 cm-2 (10 sigma), unlike our Galaxy where H2 is generally present for even low HI column densities. Although the HI column density is here as high as N(HI) ~ 2.10^21 cm-2, we observe 2N(H2)/N(HI)<< 10^-6. We cannot exclude the possibility that some H2 could be in very…
A number of giant HII regions are associated with soft diffuse X-ray emission. Among these, the Carina nebula possesses the brightest soft diffuse emission. The required plasma temperature and thermal energy can be produced by collisions or termination of fast winds from main-sequence or embedded young O stars, but the extended emission is often observed from regions apart from massive stellar clusters. The origin of the X-ray emission is unknown. The XIS CCD camera onboard Suzaku has the best spectral resolution for extended soft sources so far, and is therefore capable of measuring key emiss…
The radio complex Sgr B region is observed with the X-Ray Imaging Spectrometers (XIS) on board Suzaku. This region exhibits diffuse iron lines at 6.4, 6.7 and 6.9 keV, which are K$α$ lines of Fe \emissiontype{I} (neutral iron), Fe\emissiontype{XXV} (He-like iron) and Fe\emissiontype{XXVI} (H-like iron), respectively. The high energy resolving power of the XIS provides the separate maps of the K-shell transition lines from Fe\emissiontype{I} (6.4 keV) and Fe\emissiontype{XXV} (6.7 keV). Although the 6.7 keV line is smoothly distributed over the Sgr B region, a local excess is found near at $(l,…
We present optical photometry and spectroscopy of SN2005ip for the first 3yr after discovery, showing an underlying Type II-L SN interacting with a steady wind to yield an unusual Type IIn spectrum. For the first 160d, it had a fast linear decline from a modest peak absolute magnitude of about -17.4 (unfiltered), followed by a plateau at roughly -14.8 for more than 2yr. Initially having a normal broad-lined spectrum superposed with sparse narrow lines from the photoionized CSM, it quickly developed signs of strong CSM interaction with a spectrum similar to that of SN1988Z. As the underlying SN…
We present and discuss the results of new multiple-scattering radiative transfer calculations for three representative types of galactic environments, filled with either homogeneous or two-phase clumpy dust distributions. Extinction and scattering properties for two types of interstellar dust, similar to those found in the average diffuse medium of the Milky Way Galaxy (MW) and the Bar of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), are considered. The wavelength coverage extends from 1000 A to 30,000 A, with particular emphasis on the rest-frame UV. This makes these models especially applicable to starb…
We present preliminary numerical evidence that the physical conditions in high-mass star forming regions can arise from global gravitational infall, with the velocity dispersions being caused primarily by infall motions rather than random turbulence. To this end, we study the clumps and cores appearing in the region of central collapse in a numerical simulation of the formation, evolution, and subsequent collapse of a dense cloud out of a transonic compression in the diffuse atomic ISM. The clumps have sizes $\sim 1$ pc, masses of several hundred $M_\odot$, and three-dimensional velocity dispe…
MACHOs (Massive Astrophysical Compact Halo Objects) - as discovered by microlensing experiments towards the LMC - provide a natural explanation for the galactic halo dark matter. A realistic possibility is that MACHOs are brown dwarfs of mass $\sim 0.1 M_{\odot}$. Various arguments suggest that brown dwarfs should have a coronal X-ray emission of $\sim 10^{27}$ erg s$^{-1}$. As MACHOs are presumably clumped into dark clusters (DCs), each DC is expected to have a total X-ray luminosity of $\sim 10^{29}-10^{32}$ erg s$^{-1}$. We discuss the possibility that dark clusters contribute to the diffus…
In order to examine the excitation and ionization mechanism of extraplanar diffuse ionized gas (DIG) we have obtained optical longslit spectra of seven edge-on spiral galaxies. In four objects the brightest emission lines can be traced out to distances of typically 1.5 kpc above the disk. For NGC1963 and NGC3044 line ratios such as [NII]6583/Ha or [SII]6717/Ha as well as [OIII]5007/Hb could be measured for the halo DIG. This allows us to discuss the DIG in the halo of these objects in the framework of diagnostic diagrams. For these two objects, the line ratios of [OIII]5007/Hb decrease with in…
