We present the time evolution of the stellar metallicity for SDSS galaxies, a sample that spans five orders of magnitude in stellar mass (10^7 - 10^{12} Msun). Assuming the BC03 stellar population models, we find that more massive galaxies are more metal-rich than less massive ones at all redshifts; the mass-metallicity relation is imprinted in galaxies from the epoch of formation. For galaxies with present stellar masses > 10^{10} Msun, the time evolution of stellar metallicity is very weak, with at most 0.2-0.3 dex over a Hubble time- for this reason the mass-metallicity relation evolves little with redshift. However, for galaxies with present stellar masses < 10^{10} Msun, the evolution is significant, with metallicity increasing by more than a decade from redshift 3 to the present. By being able to recover the metallicity history, we have managed to identify the origin of a recent discrepancy between the metallicity recovered from nebular lines and absorption lines. As expected, we show that the young population dominates the former while the old population the latter. We have investigated the dependence on the stellar models used and find that older stellar population synthesis codes do not produce a clear result. Finally, we have explored the relationship between cluster environment and metallicity, and find a strong correlation in the sense that galaxies in high density regions have high metallicity.
Using MOPED we determine non-parametrically the star-formation and metallicity history of over 37,000 high-quality galaxy spectra from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) early data release. We use the entire spectral range, rather than concentrating on specific features, and we estimate the complete star formation history without prior assumptions about its form (by constructing so-called `population boxes'). The main results of this initial study are that the star formation rate in SDSS galaxies has been in decline for ~6 Gyr; a metallicity distribution for star-forming gas which is peaked ~…
We calculate the oxygen abundances for ~45,000 star-forming galaxies selected from the SDSS using nine popular `strong-line' metallicity diagnostics. We find that individual galaxies can have metallicities which differ by factors of up to ~4, depending on the choice of abundance diagnostic. The resulting mass-metallicity relations subsequently exhibit significant offsets, with a range of 0.5 dex in metallicity at a given mass. This demonstrates that different metallicity diagnostics should not be used interchangeably for determining oxygen abundances. We also show that SDSS spectra are dominat…
Clusters of galaxies allow a direct estimate of the metallicity and metal production yield on the largest scale so far. It is argued that cluster metallicity ($\sim 1/3$ solar) should be taken as representative of the low-$z$ universe as a whole. There is now compelling evidence that the bulk of stars not only in cluster ellipticals but also in field ellipticals and bulges formed at high redshifts ($z\gsim 3$). Since such stars account for at least $\sim 30%$ of the baryons now locked into stars, it is argued that at least 30% of stars and metals formed before $z\simeq 3$, and correspondingly …
A search for fossil groups in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey was performed using virtual observatory tools. A cross-match of the positions of all SDSS Luminous Red Galaxies (with r < 19 and measured spectroscopic redshifts) with sources in the ROSAT All-Sky Survey catalog resulted in a list of elliptical galaxies with extended X-ray emission (with a galaxy/ROSAT-source distance of less than 0.5 arcmin in all cases). A search for neighbors of the selected elliptical galaxies within a radius of $0.5 h_{70}^{-1}$ Mpc was conducted taking into account the r-band magnitudes and spectroscopic or photo…
We select ~20000 metal-rich star-forming galaxies from the SDSS-DR2 to study the R23-P method suggested by Pilyugin et al. for metallicity estimates. The oxygen abundances derived from their revised R23-P method are ~0.19 dex lower than those derived from the previous one, and ~0.60 dex lower than the Bayesian abundances obtained by the MPA/JHU group. These abundance discrepancies strongly correlate with the P parameter and weakly depend on the log(R23) parameter.
Evolution of galaxies through cosmic time has been widely studied at high redshift, but there are a few studies in this field at lower redshifts. However, low-redshifts studies will provide important clues to the evolution of galaxies, furnishing the required link between local and high-redshift universe. In this work we focus on the metallicity of the gas in spiral galaxies at low redshift looking for signs of chemical evolution. We analyze the metallicity contents of star forming galaxies of similar luminosities at different redshifts, we studied the metallicity of star forming galaxies from…
We create a catalogue of simulated fossil groups and study their properties, in particular the merging histories of their first-ranked galaxies. We compare the simulated fossil group properties with those of both simulated non-fossil and observed fossil groups. Using simulations and a mock galaxy catalogue, we searched for massive ($>$ 5 $\times$ 10$^{13} h^{-1} {\cal M}_\odot$) fossil groups in the Millennium Simulation Galaxy Catalogue. In addition, attempted to identify observed fossil groups in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 6 using identical selection criteria. Our predictions …
We present a sample of 42 high-mass low-metallicity outliers from the mass--metallicity relation of star-forming galaxies. These galaxies have stellar masses that span log(M_*/M_sun) ~9.4 to 11.1 and are offset from the mass--metallicity relation by -0.3 to -0.85 dex in 12+log(O/H). In general, they are extremely blue, have high star formation rates for their masses, and are morphologically disturbed. Tidal interactions are expected to induce large-scale gas inflow to the galaxies' central regions, and we find that these galaxies' gas-phase oxygen abundances are consistent with large quantitie…
We have identified a sample of 41 low-mass high--oxygen abundance outliers from the mass--metallicity relation of star-forming galaxies measured by Tremonti et al (2004). These galaxies, which have 8.6 < [12 + log(O/H)] < 9.3 over a range of -14.4 > M_B > -19.1 and 7.4 < log M_*/M_solar < 10, are surprisingly non-pathological. They have typical specific star formation rates, are fairly isolated and, with few exceptions, have no obvious companions. Morphologically, they are similar to dwarf spheroidal or dwarf elliptical galaxies. We predict that their observed high oxygen abundances are due to…
The data obtained by the recent modern sky surveys enable detailed studies of the stellar distribution in the multi-dimensional space spanned by spatial coordinates, velocity and metallicity, from the solar neighborhood all the way out to the outer Milky Way halo. While these results represent exciting observational breakthroughs, their interpretation is not simple. For example, traditional decomposition of the thin and thick disks predicts a strong correlation in metallicity and kinematics at $\sim$1 kpc from the Galactic plane; however, recent SDSS--based work has demonstrated an absence of …
Using effective temperature and metallicity derived from SDSS spectra for ~60,000 F and G type main sequence stars (0.2<g-r<0.6), we develop polynomial models for estimating these parameters from the SDSS u-g and g-r colors. We apply this method to SDSS photometric data for about 2 million F/G stars and measure the unbiased metallicity distribution for a complete volume-limited sample of stars at distances between 500 pc and 8 kpc. The metallicity distribution can be exquisitely modeled using two components with a spatially varying number ratio, that correspond to disk and halo. The two compon…
We present metallicities and their variations with different parameters for 36 high-latitude fields covering Galactic longitudes 0<l<360. The metallicities for relatively short vertical distances (z<2.5 kpc) show systematic fluctuations with Galactic longitude, similar to those of the thick-disc scaleheight, which may be interpreted as indicating a common origin, viz., the flare effect of the disc. This suggestion is supported by the metallicity variations which we find as functions of radial distance. The metallicity variation at larger vertical distances (6.5<z<9.5 kpc) is small but monotoni…
We estimated the Galactic model parameters from the SDSS data reduced for two fields in the anti-centre direction of the Galaxy, $l= 180^{o}$, and symmetric relative to the Galactic plane, $b=+45^{o}$ and $b=-45^{o}$. The large size of each field, 60 deg$^{2}$, and the faint limiting apparent magnitude, g=22, give us the chance to determine reliable parameters for three components, thin and thick discs and halo, in the north and south hemispheres of the Galaxy, except the scalelengths for two discs which are adopted from Jurić et al. (2005). Metallicities were evaluated by a recent calibration…
(Abridged) We investigate the effect of metallicity calibrations, AGN classification, and aperture covering fraction on the local mass-metallicity (MZ) relation using 27,730 star-forming galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 4. We analyse the SDSS MZ relation with 10 metallicity calibrations, including theoretical and empirical methods. We show that the choice of metallicity calibration has a significant effect on the shape and y-intercept(12+log(O/H)) of the MZ relation. The absolute metallicity scale (y-int) varies up to 0.7 dex, depending on the calibration used, an…
In addition to optical photometry of unprecedented quality, the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) is also producing a massive spectroscopic database. We discuss determination of stellar parameters, such as effective temperature, gravity and metallicity from SDSS spectra, describe correlations between kinematics and metallicity, and study their variation as a function of the position in the Galaxy. We show that stellar parameter estimates by Beers et al. show a good correlation with the position of a star in the g-r vs. u-g color-color diagram, thereby demonstrating their robustness as well as a …
We serendipitously find a new nearby Low Surface Brightness (LSB) galaxy from SDSS database. We estimate oxygen abundance of its H II region SDSS J121811.0+465501.2 from electron temperature, as well as for another H II region, SDSS J135440.5+535309.6, located in irregular LSB galaxy UGC 8837. These two extragalactic H II regions were classified as stars in the SDSS-DR4 database, and were found occasionally by us in the automatic recognition and classification on stellar spectra.Their optical spectra show obvious emission lines, i.e., strong [O III]4959, 5007, Balmer emission lines, but very w…
We discuss the serendipitous discovery of an extremely metal poor galaxy, SDSS 0809+1729, classified as a star in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The galaxy has a redshift z = 0.0441 and a B-band absolute magnitude M_B = -17.1. With a metallicity of log(O/H)+12~7.44 or ~1/20 solar, this galaxy is among the 10 most metal poor emission-line galaxies known. SDSS 0809+1729 is a blue compact galaxy (BCG) with a stellar age of ~4.5 Myr, a star formation rate of 0.18 Msun/yr, and a large gas-phase electron density ~367/cm^3. Similar values of these parameters are common among other extremely met…
We utilize Sloan Digital Sky Survey imaging and spectroscopy of ~53,000 star-forming galaxies at z~0.1 to study the relation between stellar mass and gas-phase metallicity. We derive gas-phase oxygen abundances and stellar masses using new techniques which make use of the latest stellar evolutionary synthesis and photoionization models. We find a tight (+/-0.1 dex) correlation between stellar mass and metallicity spanning over 3 orders of magnitude in stellar mass and a factor of 10 in metallicity. The relation is relatively steep from 10^{8.5} - 10^{10.5} M_sun, in good accord with known tren…
Based on 5344 quasar spectra taken from the SDSS Data Release 2, the dependences of various emission-line flux ratios on redshift and quasar luminosity are investigated in the ranges 2.0 < z < 4.5 and -24.5 > M_B > -29.5$. We show that the emission lines in the composite spectra are fitted better with power-law profiles than with double Gaussian or modified Lorentzian profiles, and in particular we show that the power-law profiles are more appropriate to measure broad emission-line fluxes than other methods. The composite spectra show that there are statistically significant correlations betwe…
We introduce VErsatile SPectral Analysis (VESPA): a new method which aims to recover robust star formation and metallicity histories from galactic spectra. VESPA uses the full spectral range to construct a galaxy history from synthetic models. We investigate the use of an adaptative parametrization grid to recover reliable star formation histories on a galaxy-by-galaxy basis. Our goal is robustness as opposed to high resolution histories, and the method is designed to return high time resolution only where the data demand it. In this paper we detail the method and we present our findings when …
M82 B is an old starburst site located in the eastern part of the M82 disc. We derive the distributions of age and metallicity of the star clusters located in this region of M82 by using theoretical evolutionary population synthesis models. Our analysis is based on the comparison of the $BVIJ$ photometry obtained by de Grijs et al. (2001) with the colours of single-generation stellar populations. We show that M82 B went through a chemical enrichment phase up to super-solar metallicities around the time of the last close encounter between M82 and its large neighbour galaxy M81. We date and conf…
We present the results of a MOPED analysis of ~3 x 10^5 galaxy spectra from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release Three (SDSS DR3), with a number of improvements in data, modelling and analysis compared with our previous analysis of DR1. The improvements include: modelling the galaxies with theoretical models at a higher spectral resolution of 3Å; better calibrated data; an extended list of excluded emission lines, and a wider range of dust models. We present new estimates of the cosmic star formation rate, the evolution of stellar mass density and the stellar mass function from the fossil…
While the abundances of Be and B observed in metal-poor halo stars are well explained as resulting from spallation of CNO-enriched cosmic rays (CRs) accelerated by supernova shocks, accounting for the observed $^6$Li in such stars with supernova CRs is more problematic. Here we propose that gravitational shocks induced by infalling and merging sub-Galactic clumps during hierarchical structure formation of the Galaxy should dissipate enough energy at early epochs, and CRs accelerated by such shocks can provide a natural explanation of the observed $^6$Li. In clear constrast to supernovae, struc…
We report the discovery of a compact object (R_e = 32 pc, M_B = -12.34 mag) at a projected distance of 9 kpc from Messier 59, a giant elliptical in the Virgo cluster. Using HST imaging and SDSS spectroscopy, both available in the Virtual Observatory, we find that this object has a blue core containing one-quarter of the light, and a redder n=1 Sersic envelope, as well as luminosity-weighted age of 9.3 +/- 1.4 Gyr, a metallicity of -0.03 +/- 0.04 dex and a velocity dispersion of 48 +/- 5 km/s. While ultra-compact dwarfs (UCDs) in the face-on view of the Fundamental Plane are found to form a seq…
For a sample of 25 dwarf irregular galaxies with distances D < 5 Mpc and measured oxygen abundances, we present results derived from stellar masses and galaxy luminosities from near-infrared imaging with IRAC on the Spitzer Space Telescope. We have constructed the appropriate luminosity-metallicity (L-Z) and mass-metallicity (M-Z) relations, and compared these relations with their corresponding relations from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We obtain the following results. 1. The dispersion in the near-infrared L-Z relation is reduced with respect to the dispersion in the optical L-Z rela…
We report on the distribution of metallicities, [Fe/H], for very metal-poor stars in the halo of the Galaxy. Although the primary information on the nature of the Metallicity Distribution Function (MDF) is obtained from the two major recent surveys for metal-poor stars, the HK survey of Beers and collaborators, and the Hamburg/ESO Survey of Christlieb and collaborators, we also discuss the MDF derived from the publicly available database of stellar spectra and photometry contained in the third data release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS DR-3). Even though the SDSS was not originally pla…
Star cluster formation is a major mode of star formation in the extreme conditions of interacting galaxies and violent starbursts. These newly-formed clusters are built from recycled gas, pre-enriched to various levels within the interacting galaxies. Hence, star clusters of different ages represent a fossil record of the chemical enrichment history of their host galaxy, as well as of the host galaxy's violent star formation history. We present a new set of evolutionary synthesis models of our GALEV code, specifically developed to include the gaseous emission of presently forming star clusters…
The availability of high-quality spectra for a large number of galaxies in the SDSS survey allows for a more sophisticated extraction of information about their stellar populations than, e.g., the luminosity weighted age. Indeed, sophisticated and robust techniques to fully analyze galaxy spectra have now reached enough maturity as to trust their results and findings. By reconstructing the star formation and metallicity history of galaxies from the SDSS fossil record and analyzing how it relates to its environment, we have learned how to classify galaxies: to first order the evolution of a gal…
We exploit recent constraints on the ages and metallicities of early-type galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) to gain new insight into the physical origin of two fundamental relations obeyed by these galaxies: the colour-magnitude and the Mg2-sigmaV relations. Our sample consists of 26,003 galaxies selected from the SDSS DR2 on the basis of their concentrated light profiles, for which we have previously derived median-likelihood estimates of stellar metallicity, light-weighted age and stellar mass. Our analysis provides the most unambiguous demonstration to date of the fact that bo…
We have derived element abundances in 310 emission-line galaxies from the Early Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) for which the [O {\sc iii}] 4363 emission line was detected, allowing abundance determination by direct methods. We found no extremely metal-deficient galaxy (Z<Zsun/12), probably as a consequence of selection effects in the SDSS sample. The oxygen abundance 12 + log O/H of the SDSS galaxies sample lies in the range from ~7.6 (Zsun/12) to ~8.4 (Zsun/2). This sample is merged with a sample of ~100 blue compact dwarf galaxies with high quality spectra containing som…
Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) quasar spectroscopy is yielding a database of strong low-ionization MgII absorbers over the redshift interval 0.36<z<2.28 which is over two orders of magnitude larger than anything previously assembled. HST UV spectroscopy has been used to measure neutral hydrogen column densities for a small subset of them. These data empirically show that MgII absorbers with rest equivalent widths $W^{\lambda2796}_0 \ge 0.6$ Åhave a mean neutral hydrogen column density that is roughly constant at $N(HI) \approx 4 \times 10^{20}$ atoms cm$^{-2}$, with individual systems lying i…
