The exclusive channel polarized proton(polarized e,e prime p)pi0 was studied in the first and second nucleon resonance regions in the Q2 range from 0.187 to 0.770 GeV2 at Jefferson Lab using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS). Longitudinal target and beam-target asymmetries were extracted over a large range of center-of-mass angles of the pi0 and compared to the unitary isobar model MAID, the dynamic model by Sato and Lee, and the dynamic model DMT. A strong sensitivity to individual models was observed, in particular for the target asymmetry and in the higher invariant mass region. This data set, once included in the global fits of the above models, is expected to place strong constraints on the electrocoupling amplitudes A_{1/2} and S_{1/2} for the Roper resonance N(1400)P11, and the N(1535)S11 and N(1520)D13 states.
We have measured parity-violating asymmetries in elastic electron-proton and quasi-elastic electron-deuteron scattering at Q^2 = 0.22 and 0.63 GeV^2. They are sensitive to strange quark contributions to currents in the nucleon, and to the nucleon axial current. The results indicate strange quark contributions of < 10% of the charge and magnetic nucleon form factors at these four-momentum transfers. We also present the first measurement of anapole moment effects in the axial current at these four-momentum transfers.
First measurements of dihadron correlations for charged particles are presented for central PbPb collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 2.76 TeV over a broad range in relative pseudorapidity, Delta(eta), and the full range of relative azimuthal angle, Delta(phi). The data were collected with the CMS detector, at the LHC. A broadening of the away-side (Delta(phi) approximately pi) azimuthal correlation is observed at all Delta(eta), as compared to the measurements in pp collisions. Furthermore, long-range dihadron correlations in Delta(eta) are observed for particles with simi…
The work presents the studies of the polarization observables in the single pion production (SPP) induced by the interaction of the muon neutrino (antineutrino) with nucleons. The SPP cross-sections and spin asymmetries are computed within two phenomenological models. One is basing on the nonlinear sigma model \cite{Hernandez:2007qq}; the other has origin in linear sigma model~\cite{Fogli:1979cz}. Firstly, we show that the final nucleon polarization and target spin asymmetries are good observables to obtain information about the $C_5^A$ axial form factor. Secondly, we demonstrate that the nucl…
We report on the design, construction, commissioning, and performance of a threshold gas Čerenkov counter in an open configuration, which operates in a high luminosity environment and produces a high photo-electron yield. Part of a unique open geometry detector package known as the Big Electron Telescope Array, this Čerenkov counter served to identify scattered electrons and reject produced pions in an inclusive scattering experiment known as the Spin Asymmetries of the Nucleon Experiment E07-003 at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (TJNAF) also known as Jefferson Lab. The exp…
Recent chiral EFT calculations of nucleon polarizabilities reveal a problem in the current empirical determination of proton's electromagnetic polarizabilities. We also report on the progress in the empirical determination of the $Δ$(1232)-resonance magnetic moment in the process of $γp \to p π^0 γ'$ measured at MAMI.
The D(03) dibaryon is generated dynamically as a resonance pole in a pion-nucleon-Delta' three-body model, where Delta' is a stable Delta baryon. Using separable interactions dominated by the Delta(1232) isobar for pion-nucleon and by the D(12) isobar for nucleon-Delta', where D(12) is the nucleon-Delta 2150 MeV dibaryon deduced in and constrained by 1D2 pp scattering, the model reduces to an effective two-body problem for Delta-Delta' which is solved. The mass and width of D(03) are found close to those of the I(JP)=0(3+) resonance peak observed by WASA@COSY in pion-production pn collisions a…
N-Delta and Delta-Delta dibaryon candidates are discussed and related quark-based calculations are reviewed. New hadronic calculations of L=0 nonstrange dibaryon candidates are reported. For N-Delta, I(JP)=1(2+) and 2(1+) S-matrix poles slightly below threshold are found by solving pi-N-N Faddeev equations with relativistic kinematics, and for Delta-Delta several S-matrix poles below threshold are found by solving pi-N-Delta Faddeev equations with relativistic kinematics in which the N-Delta interaction is dominated by the 1(2+) and 2(1+) resonating channels. In particular, the I(JP)=0(3+) Del…
Three-body hadronic models with separable pairwise interactions are formulated and solved to calculate resonance masses and widths of L=0 N-Delta and Delta-Delta dibaryons using relativistic kinematics. For N-Delta, I(JP)=1(2+) and 2(1+) resonances slightly below threshold are found by solving pi-N-N Faddeev equations. For Delta-Delta, several resonances below threshold are found by solving pi-N-Delta Faddeev equations in which the N-Delta interaction is dominated by the 1(2+) and 2(1+) resonating channels. The lowest Delta-Delta dibaryon resonances found are for I(JP)=0(3+) and 3(0+), the for…
We calculate the form factors of the electromagnetic nucleon-to-$Δ$-resonance transition to third chiral order in manifestly Lorentz-invariant chiral effective field theory. For the purpose of generating a systematic power counting, the complex-mass scheme is applied in combination with the small-scale expansion. We fit the results to available empirical data.
Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs) provide a dynamical picture of the nucleon. The exclusive production of $ρ^0$ mesons on a transversely polarised target is sensitive to the nucleon helicity-flip GPDs $E$ which are related to the total angular momentum of quarks and gluons. In 2007 and 2010 the COMPASS experiment at CERN collected data by scattering a 160 GeV/c muon beam off a transversely polarised NH$_3$ target. The final state particles were detected with the two-stage spectrometer with high resolution tracking. In this talk new results for the azimuthal asymmetries $A_{\text{UT}}$ an…
We closely investigate NN potentials based upon the Delta-full version of chiral effective field theory. We find that recently constructed NN potentials of this kind, which (when applied together with three-nucleon forces) were presented as predicting accurate binding energies and radii for a range of nuclei from A=16 to A=132 and providing accurate equations of state for nuclear matter, yield a chi^2/datum of 60 for the reproduction of the pp data below 100 MeV laboratory energy. This chi^2 is more than three times what the Hamada-Johnston potential of the year of 1962 achieved already some 6…
We study the cross section for vector boson ($W^{\pm}/Z^0/γ^*$) production in polarized nucleon-nucleon collisions for low transverse momentum of the observed vector boson. For the case where one measures the transverse momentum and azimuthal angle of the vector bosons, we present the cross sections and the associated spin asymmetries in terms of transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions (TMDs) at tree level within the TMD factorization formalism. To assess the feasibility of experimental measurements, we estimate the spin asymmetries for $W^{\pm}/Z^0$ boson production in pol…
We calculate the electromagnetic, axial and pseudo-scalar form factors of the Nucleon to $Δ(1232)$ transition using two dynamical light degenerate quarks and a dynamical strange quark simulated with the domain wall fermion action. Results are obtained at lattice spacings $a = 0.114$ fm and $a=0.084$ fm, with corresponding pion masses of $330$ MeV and $297$ MeV, respectively. High statistics measurements are achieved by utilizing the coherent sink technique. The dominant electromagnetic dipole form factor, the axial form factors and the pseudo-scalar coupling are extracted to a good accuracy. T…
This dissertation investigated selected processes involving baryons and nuclei in hard scattering reactions. Through these processes, this work explored the constituent structure of baryons and the mechanisms through which the interactions between these constituents ultimately control the selected reactions. First, hard nucleon-nucleon elastic scattering was studied considering the quark exchange (QE) between the nucleons to be the dominant mechanism of interaction in the constituent picture. It was found that an angular asymmetry exhibited by proton-neutron (pn) elastic scattering data is exp…
We propose the jet charge observable as a novel probe of flavor structure in the nucleon spin program at the Electron Ion Collider (EIC). We show that jet charge measurements can substantially enhance the sensitivity of spin asymmetries to different partonic flavors in the nucleon. This sensitivity can be further improved by constructing the jet charge using only a subset of hadron species (pions or kaons) in the jet. As an example, we use the Sivers asymmetry in back-to-back electron-jet production at the EIC to show that the jet charge can be a unique tool in constraining the Sivers function…
