Sampling from a random discrete distribution induced by a `stick-breaking' process is considered. Under a moment condition, it is shown that the asymptotics of the sequence of occupancy numbers, and of the small-parts counts (singletons, doubletons, etc) can be read off from a limiting model involving a unit Poisson point process and a self-similar renewal process on the halfline.
Bernoulli sieve is a recursive construction of a random composition (ordered partition) of integer $n$. This composition can be induced by sampling from a random discrete distribution which has frequencies equal to the sizes of component intervals of a stick-breaking interval partition of $[0,1]$. We exploit Markov property of the composition and its renewal representation to derive asymptotics of the moments and to prove a central limit theorem for the number of parts.
The Bernoulli sieve is an infinite occupancy scheme obtained by allocating the points of a uniform $[0,1]$ sample over an infinite collection of intervals made up by successive positions of a multiplicative random walk independent of the uniform sample. We prove a law of the iterated logarithm for the number of non-empty (occupied) intervals as the size of the uniform sample becomes large.
The Bernoulli sieve is a version of the classical balls-in-boxes occupancy scheme, in which random frequencies of infinitely many boxes are produced by a multiplicative random walk, also known as the residual allocation model or stick-breaking. We give an overview of the limit theorems concerning the number of boxes occupied by some balls out of the first $n$ balls thrown, and present some new results concerning the number of empty boxes within the occupancy range.
The Bernoulli sieve is a version of the classical `balls-in-boxes' occupancy scheme, in which random frequencies of infinitely many boxes are produced by a multiplicative renewal process, also known as the residual allocation model or stick-breaking. We focus on the number $K_n$ of boxes occupied by at least one of $n$ balls, as $n\to\infty$. A variety of limiting distributions for $K_n$ is derived from the properties of associated perturbed random walks. Refining the approach based on the standard renewal theory we remove a moment constraint to cover the cases left open in previous studies.
The Bernoulli sieve is a random allocation scheme obtained by placing independent points with the uniform [0,1] law into the intervals made up by successive positions of a multiplicative random walk with factors taking values in the interval (0,1). Assuming that the number of points is equal to n we investigate the weak convergence, as n tends to infinity, of finite-dimensional distributions of the number of empty intervals within the occupancy range. A new argument enables us to relax the constraints imposed in previous papers on the distribution of the factor of the multiplicative random wal…
The Bernoulli sieve is the infinite "balls-in-boxes" occupancy scheme with random frequencies $P_k=W_1...W_{k-1}(1-W_k)$, where $(W_k)_{k\in\mn}$ are independent copies of a random variable $W$ taking values in $(0,1)$. Assuming that the number of balls equals $n$, let $L_n$ denote the number of empty boxes within the occupancy range. The paper proves that, under a regular variation assumption, $L_n$, properly normalized without centering, weakly converges to a functional of an inverse stable subordinator. Proofs rely upon the observation that $(\log P_k)$ is a perturbed random walk. In partic…
The Bernoulli sieve is the infinite "balls-in-boxes" occupancy scheme with random frequencies $P_k=W_1... W_{k-1}(1-W_k)$, where $(W_k)_{k\in\mn}$ are independent copies of a random variable $W$ taking values in $(0,1)$. Assuming that the number of balls equals $n$, let $L_n$ denote the number of empty boxes within the occupancy range. In the paper we investigate convergence in distribution of $L_n$ in the two cases which remained open after the previous studies. In particular, provided that $\me |\log W|=\me |\log (1-W)|=\infty$ and that the law of $W$ assigns comparable masses to the neighbo…
The Bernoulli sieve is the infinite Karlin "balls-in-boxes" scheme with random probabilities of stick-breaking type. Assuming that the number of placed balls equals $n$, we prove several functional limit theorems (FLTs) in the Skorohod space $D[0,1]$ endowed with the $J_{1}$- or $M_{1}$-topology for the number $K_{n}^{*}(t)$ of boxes containing at most $[n^{t}]$ balls, $t\in[0,1]$, and the random distribution function $K_{n}^{*}(t)/K_{n}^{*}(1)$, as $n\to\infty$. The limit processes for $K_{n}^{*}(t)$ are of the form $(X(1)-X((1-t)-))_{t\in[0,1]}$, where $X$ is either a Brownian motion, a spec…
We consider an occupancy scheme in which "balls" are identified with $n$ points sampled from the standard exponential distribution, while the role of "boxes" is played by the spacings induced by an independent random walk with positive and nonlattice steps. We discuss the asymptotic behavior of five quantities: the index $K_n^*$ of the last occupied box, the number $K_n$ of occupied boxes, the number $K_{n,0}$ of empty boxes whose index is at most $K_n^*$, the index $W_n$ of the first empty box and the number of balls $Z_n$ in the last occupied box. It is shown that the limiting distribution o…
This article presents a limit theorem for the gaps $\widehat{G}_{i:n}:= X_{n-i+1:n} - X_{n-i:n}$ between order statistics $X_{1:n} \le \cdots \le X_{n:n}$ of a sample of size $n$ from a random discrete distribution on the positive integers $(P_1, P_2, \ldots)$ governed by a residual allocation model (also called a Bernoulli sieve) $P_j:= H_j \prod_{i=1}^{j-1}(1-H_i)$ for a sequence of independent random hazard variables $H_i$ which are identically distributed according to some distribution of $H \in (0,1)$ such that $- \log(1 - H)$ has a non-lattice distribution with finite mean $μ_{\mbox{log}…
Consider a Bernoulli random field satisfying the Hannan's condition. Recently, invariance principles for partial sums of random fields over rectangular index sets are established. In this note we complement previous results by investigating limit theorems for weighted Bernoulli random fields, including central limit theorems for partial sums over arbitrary index sets and invariance principles for Gaussian random fields. Most results improve earlier ones on Bernoulli random fields under Wu's condition, which is stronger than Hannan's condition.
The study of the restricted isometry property (RIP) of corrupted random matrices is particularly important in the field of compressed sensing (CS) with corruptions. If a matrix still satisfies the RIP after that a certain portion of rows are erased, then we say that this matrix has the strong restricted isometry property (SRIP). In the field of compressed sensing, random matrices which satisfy certain moment conditions are of particular interest. Among these matrices, those with entries generated from i.i.d. Gaussian or symmetric Bernoulli random variables are often typically considered. Recen…
We consider the Bernoulli Boolean discrete percolation model on the d-dimensional integer lattice. We study sufficient conditions on the distribution of the radii of balls placed at the points of a Bernoulli point process for the absence of percolation, provided that the intensity of the underlying point process is small enough. We also study a Harris graphical procedure to construct, forward in time, particle systems with interactions of infinite range under the assumption that the corresponding generator admits a Kalikow-type decomposition. We do so by using the subcriticality of the boolean…
We show that the permanent of an $n \times n$ matrix with iid Bernoulli entries $\pm 1$ is of magnitude $n^{({1/2}+o(1))n}$ with probability $1-o(1)$. In particular, it is almost surely non-zero.
We consider the use of random walks as an approach to obtain connection coefficients for higher-order Bernoulli and Euler polynomials. In particular, we consider the cases of a $1$-dimensional linear reflected Brownian motion and of a $3$-dimensional Bessel process. Considering the successive hitting times of two, three, and four fixed levels by these random walks yields non-trivial identities that involve higher-order Bernoulli and Euler polynomials.
In this note we present an algorithm to obtain a uniform lower bound on Hausdorff dimension of the stationary measure of an affine iterated function scheme with similarities, the best known example of which is Bernoulli convolution. The Bernoulli convolution measure $μ_λ$ is the probability measure corresponding to the law of the random variable $ξ= \sum_{k=0}^\infty ξ_kλ^k$, where $ξ_k$ are i.i.d. random variables assuming values $-1$ and $1$ with equal probability and $\frac12 < λ< 1$. In particular, for Bernoulli convolutions we give a uniform lower bound $\dim_H(μ_λ) \geq 0.96399$ for all …
We call Krawtchouk-Griffiths systems, KG-systems, systems of multivariate polynomials orthogonal with respect to corresponding multinomial distributions. The original Krawtchouk polynomials are orthogonal with respect to a binomial distribution. Here we present a Fock space construction with raising and lowering operators. The operators of "multiplication by X" are found in terms of boson operators and corresponding recurrence relations presented. The Riccati partial differential equations for the differentiation operators, Berezin transform and associated partial differential equations are fo…
Using some extensions of a theorem of Heppes on finitely supported discrete probability measures, we address the problems of classification and testing based on projections. In particular, when the support of the distributions is known in advance (as for instance for multivariate Bernoulli distributions), a single suitably chosen projection determines the distribution. Several applications of these results are considered.
For the two-sided Bernoulli initial condition with density $ρ_-$ (resp. $ρ_+$) to the left (resp. to the right), we study the distribution of a tagged particle in the one dimensional symmetric simple exclusion process. We obtain a formula for the moment generating function of the associated current in terms of a Fredholm determinant. Our arguments are based on a combination of techniques from integrable probability which have been developed recently for studying the asymmetric exclusion process and a subsequent intricate symmetric limit. An expression for the large deviation function of the ta…
In this paper, we present a quantum Bernoulli noises approach to quantum walks on hypercubes. We first obtain an alternative description of a general hypercube and then, based on the alternative description, we find that the operators $\partial_k^* + \partial_k$ behave actually as the shift operators, where $\partial_k$ and $\partial_k^*$ are the annihilation and creation operators acting on Bernoulli functionals, respectively. With the above operators as the shift operators on the position space, we introduce a discrete-time quantum walk model on a general hypercube and obtain an explicit for…
