In this article, I review progress towards an understanding of the normal state (in-plane) transport properties of high-$T_c$ cuprates in the light of recent developments in both spectroscopic and transport measurement techniques. Against a backdrop of mounting evidence for anisotropic single-particle lifetimes in cuprate superconductors, new results have emerged that advocate similar momentum dependence in the transport decay rate $Γ$({\bf k}). In addition, enhancement of the energy scale (up to the bare bandwidth) over which spectroscopic information on the quasiparticle response can be obtained has led to the discovery of new, unforeseen features that surprisingly, may have a significant bearing on the transport properties at the dc limit. With these two key developments in mind, I consider here whether all the ingredients necessary for a complete phenomenological description of the anomalous normal state transport properties of high-$T_c$ cuprates are now in place.
Recently, we have argued that experimental data on superfluid density and terahertz conductivity of overdoped LSCO are compatible with a Landau Fermi liquid/Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer description of these samples, provided dopants are treated within "dirty $d$-wave theory" as weak scatterers. Here we test these ideas by comparing to specific heat and thermal conductivity data on LSCO, showing that the theory works extremely well across the overdoped region for similar disorder parameters. We then study the same properties in another overdoped cuprate, Tl-2201, thought to be quite "clean" since …
Nuclear relaxation is an important thermodynamic probe of electronic excitations, in particular in conducting and superconducting systems. Here, an empirical phenomenology based on all available literature data for planar Cu in hole-doped cuprates is developed. It is found that most of the seemingly different relaxation rates among the systems are due to a temperature independent anisotropy that affects the mostly measured $1/T_{1\parallel}$, the rate with an external magnetic field along the crystal $c$-axis, while $1/T_{1\perp}$ is largely independent on doping and material above the critica…
The origin of the weak insulating behavior of the resistivity, i.e. $ρ_{xx}\propto\ln(1/T)$, revealed when magnetic fields ($H$) suppress superconductivity in underdoped cuprates has been a longtime mystery. Surprisingly, the high-field behavior of the resistivity observed recently in charge- and spin-stripe-ordered La-214 cuprates suggests a metallic, as opposed to insulating, high-field normal state. Here we report the vanishing of the Hall coefficient in this field-revealed normal state for all $T<(2-6)T_{\mathrm{c}}^{0}$, where $T_{\mathrm{c}}^{0}$ is the zero-field superconducting transit…
The Low-Temperature Phenomenology of Gap Inhomogeneity in the Cuprate Superconductors: High-Energy Granularity, Low-Energy Homogeneity, and Spectral Kinks
Planar normal state resistivity data taken from three families of cuprate superconductors are compared with theoretical calculations from the recent extremely correlated Fermi liquid theory (ECFL). The two hole doped cuprate materials $LSCO$ and $BSLCO$ and the electron doped material $LCCO$ have yielded rich data sets at several densities $δ$ and temperatures T, thereby enabling a systematic comparison with theory. The recent ECFL resistivity calculations for the highly correlated $t$-$t'$-$J$ model by us give the resistivity for a wide set of model parameters. After using X-ray diffraction a…

A review of the phenomenology and microscopy of cuprate superconductors is presented, with particular attention to universal conductance features, which reveal the existence of two electronic subsystems. The overall electronic system consists of $1+p$ charges, where $p$ is the doping. At low dopings exactly one hole is localized per planar copper-oxygen unit, while upon increasing doping and temperature, the hole is gradually delocalized and becomes itinerant. Remarkably, the itinerant holes exhibit identical Fermi-liquid character across the cuprate phase diagram. This universality enables a …

Evolution of Fermi surface and normal-state gap in chemically substituted cuprates Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2-x}$Bi$_{x}$CuO$_{6+δ}$
The anisotropy of the electron scattering rate and lifetime $Γ_\mathbf{p}=1/τ_\mathbf{p}$ observed by Angle Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy (ARPES) is evaluated using $s$-$d$ Kondo-Zener exchange Hamiltonian used previously to describe superconducting properties of high-$T_c$ cuprates; for correlation between critical temperature $T_c$ and BCS coupling constant, for example. The performed qualitative analysis reveals that "cold spots" correspond to nodal regions of the superconducting phase where the superconducting gap is zero, because the exchange interaction is annulled. Vice versa, "ho…
