We have made a Monte Carlo simulation of the intergalactic absorption in order to model the Lyman continuum absorption, which is required to estimate the escape fraction of the Lyman continuum from distant galaxies. To input into the simulation, we derive an empirical distribution function of the intergalactic absorbers which reproduces recent observational statistics of the Lyman $α$ forest, Lyman limit systems (LLSs), and damped Lyman $α$ systems (DLAs) simultaneously. In particular, we assume a common functional form of the number evolution along the redshift for all types of absorbers. The Lyman series transmissions in our simulation reproduce the observed redshift evolution of the transmissions excellently, and the Lyman continuum transmission also agrees with an observed estimation which is still quite rare in the literature. The probability distribution of the Lyman $α$ opacity in our simulation is log-normal with a tail towards a large opacity. This tail is produced by DLAs. The probability distribution of the Lyman continuum opacity in our simulation also show a broad tail towards a large opacity. This tail is produced by LLSs. Because of the rarity of LLSs, we have a chance to have a clean line of sight in the Lyman continuum even for $z\sim4$ with a probability of about 20%. Our simulation expects a good correlation between the Lyman continuum opacity and the Lyman $α$ opacity, which may be useful to estimate the former from the latter for an individual line of sight.
The last few years have seen a dramatic improvement in our understanding of the origin of Lyman alpha absorption systems. Hydrodynamic numerical simulations of cold dark matter dominated universes have shown that the many properties of the Lyman alpha absorption systems can be explained by a photoionized, space-filling, intergalactic medium. Lyman alpha lines offer promising probes of the photoionizing background, the amplitude of the mass fluctuations at high redshift and the evolution of the equation of state of the intergalactic medium.
High-energy emission from gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) can give rise to pair echos, i.e. delayed inverse Compton emission from secondary $e^{\pm}$ pairs produced in $γ-γ$ interactions with intergalactic background radiation. We investigate the detectability of such emission with modern-day gamma-ray telescopes. The spectra and light curves are calculated for a wide range of parameters, applying the formalism recently developed by Ichiki et al. The flux depends strongly on the unknown magnitude and coherence length of intergalactic magnetic fields, and we delineate the range of field strength and re…
Based on the empirical formulas governing the distribution of Ly-a forest absorption, we use a Monte-Carlo technique to calculate the average HeII optical depth produced by these forest lines. A substantial contribution to HeII absorption arises from extremely tenuous regions of intergalactic gas that are beyond the observational limits for HI absorption.
We present a new, high resolution HST/GHRS spectrum of quasar Q0302-003, and use the HeII Lyman-$α$ absorption, together with a high resolution Keck spectrum of the HI Lyman-$α$ forest, to probe the distribution and ionization state of foreground gas just below the quasar redshift $z\approx 3.3$. The main new conclusions from the current data are: 1. The HeII Lyman-$α$ forest is detected; 2. The ``diffuse'' (redshift-space-filling) medium is also detected, and must have a low density ($Ω\le 0.01 (h/0.7)^{-3/2}$) consistent with standard primordial nucleosynthesis and models of early gas collap…
We re-examine scattering of photons near the Lyman-alpha resonance in the intergalactic medium (IGM). We first derive a general integral solution for the radiation field around resonance when spin diffusivity is ignored. Our solution shows explicitly that recoil sources an absorption feature, whose magnitude increases with the relative importance of recoil compared to Doppler broadening. This spectrum depends on the Lyman-alpha line profile, but approximating it with the absorption profile appropriate to the Lorentzian wings of natural broadening accurately reproduces the results for a full Vo…
The Doppler parameter distribution of Lyman-alpha absorption is calculated for a set of different reionization histories. The differences in temperature between different reionization histories are as large as a factor three to four depending on the spectrum of the ionizing sources and the redshift of helium reionization. These temperature differences result in observable differences in the Doppler parameter distribution. Best agreement with the observed Doppler parameter distribution between redshift two and four is found if hydrogen and helium are reionized simultaneously at or before redshi…
We present an analysis of the Lyman alpha forests of five quasar spectra in the near UV. Properties of the intergalactic medium (IGM) at an intermediate redshift interval (0.9 < z < 1.9) are studied. The amount of baryons in the diffuse photoionised IGM and the warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM) are traced to get constraints on the redshift evolution of the different phases of the intergalactic gas. The baryon density of the diffuse IGM is determined with photoionisation calculations under the assumption of local hydrostatic equilibrium. We assume that the gas is ionised by a metagalactic ba…
We have measured the transmission of the Lyman alpha forest produced by neutral hydrogen scattering in the intergalactic medium between redshifts 2 and 6.3 using high signal to noise, high resolution (R > 5000) observations of 50 quasars spread over the redshift range. We use a uniform set of 15 Angstrom intervals covering Lyman alpha, Lyman beta, and Lyman gamma absorption regions to tabulate the forest transmission as a function of redshift. The transmitted fractions show a relatively smooth evolution over the entire range of redshifts, which can be modelled with a smoothly decreasing ioniza…
We present the first results from a survey of the relative spatial distributions of galaxies, intergalactic neutral hydrogen, and intergalactic metals at high redshift. We obtained high-resolution spectra of 8 bright QSOs at 3.1<z<4.1 and spectroscopic redshifts for 431 Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs) at slightly lower redshifts. Comparing the locations of galaxies to the absorption lines in the QSO spectra shows that the intergalactic medium contains less neutral hydrogen than the global average within r<0.5h^-1 comoving Mpc of LBGs and more than average at slightly larger distances 1<r<5 h^-1 co…
The observed number density of Lyman-alpha sources implies a minimum volume of the inter-galactic medium that must be ionized, in order to allow the Lyman-alpha photons to escape attenuation. We estimate this volume by assigning to each Lyman-alpha emitter the minimum Stromgren sphere that would allow half its Lyman-alpha photons to escape. This implies a lower limit to ionized gas volume fraction of 20-50% at redshift z=6.5. This is a lower limit in two ways: First, we conservatively assume that the Lyman-alpha sources seen (at a relatively bright flux limit) are the only ones present; and se…
We present a new HST/STIS spectrum of the z=3.18 quasar PKS 1935-692 and summarize the spectral features shortwards of 304A in the rest frame likely to be caused by foreground HeII Lyman-alpha absorption. In accord with previous results on two other quasars at similar redshifts, we demonstrate a correlation with the HI Lyman-alpha forest absorption, and show that much of the helium absorption is caused by a comparable quantity of more diffuse gas with Omega~0.01, that is not detected in HI. The helium ionization zone around the quasar is detected as well as a void seen in both HI and HeII. The…
Most of cosmic baryons predicted by the big-bang nucleosynthesis has evaded the direct detection. Recent numerical simulations indicate that approximately 30 to 50 percent of the total baryons in the present universe is supposed to take a form of warm/hot intergalactic medium (WHIM) whose X-ray continuum emission is very weak. To identify those missing baryons, we consider in detail the detectability of WHIM directly through emission lines of OVII (561, 568, 574, 665eV) and OVIII (653eV). For this purpose, we create mock spectra of the emission lines of WHIM using a light-cone output of the co…
The spectra of the first galaxies and quasars in the Universe should be strongly absorbed shortward of their rest-frame Lyman-alpha wavelength by neutral hydrogen (HI) in the intervening intergalactic medium. However, the Lyman-alpha line photons emitted by these sources are not eliminated but rather scatter until they redshift out of resonance and escape due to the Hubble expansion of the surrounding intergalactic HI. We calculate the resulting brightness distribution and the spectral shape of the diffuse Lyman-alpha line emission around high redshift sources, before the intergalactic medium …
Lyman-alpha absorption is a prominent cosmological tool for probing both galactic halos and the intergalactic medium at high redshift. We consider a variety of sources that can be used as the Lyman-alpha emitters for this purpose. Among these sources, we argue that quasars are the best probes of the evolution of massive halos, while gamma-ray bursts represent the cleanest sources for studying the reionization of the intergalactic medium.
Theoretical and observational arguments suggest that the intergalactic medium (IGM) might have been polluted with metals produced by early star formation. In this scenario, Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs) at redshift z=3 are likely to be surrounded by old metal bubbles, relics of an era when the characteristic mass of galaxies was small and gas retainment more difficult. We find that pregalactic enrichment of the IGM from 10^8-10^{10} M_sun dwarf galaxies at 6<z<12 can quantitatively explain the high cross-correlation between CIV systems and LBGs observed at z=3. The reason is twofold. First, both…
In this paper we investigate the possible reasons why HI 21-cm absorption in damped Lyman-alpha systems (DLAs) has only been detected at low redshift... We suggest that the lack of 21-cm absorption detections at high redshift arises from the fact that these DLAs are at similar angular diameter distances to the background quasars (i.e. the distance ratios are always close to unity): Above z~1.6 the covering factor becomes largely independent of the DLA--QSO distance, making the high redshift absorbers much less effective at covering the background continuum emission. At low redshift, small dist…
Time evolution of the ionization state of metals in the cosmic baryons is investigated in a cosmological context without the assumption of ionization equilibrium. We find that a significant fraction of ionized oxygen ions (OVII and OVIII) in the warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM) is not in the ionization equilibrium state at a redshift of z~0. We also investigate the effect on the detectability and observables of WHIM as a consequence of such deviation from ionization equilibrium. It is found that the detectability of WHIM is not altered very much both through its emission and absorption sig…
A soft ultraviolet radiation field, 10.2 eV < E <13.6 eV, that permeates neutral intergalactic gas during the Epoch of Reionization (EoR) excites the 2p (directly) and 2s (indirectly) states of atomic hydrogen. Because the 2s state is metastable, the lifetime of atoms in this level is relatively long, which may cause the 2s state to be overpopulated relative to the 2p state. It has recently been proposed that for this reason, neutral intergalactic atomic hydrogen gas may be detected in absorption in its 3-cm fine-structure line (2s_1/2 -> 2p_3/2) against the Cosmic Microwave Background out to …
We show that spatial correlations in a stochastic large scale velocity field in an otherwise smooth intergalactic medium (homogeneous comoving density) superposed on the general Hubble flow, may cause a `line-like' structure in QSO spectra similar to the population of unsaturated Ly-alpha forest lines which usually are attributed to individual clouds with 10^{11} <= N(HI) <= 5*10^{13} cm^{-2}. Therefore there is no clear observational distinction between a diffuse intergalactic medium and discrete intergalactic clouds. It follows that the HI-density in the diffuse intergalactic medium might be…
We directly measure the evolution of the intergalactic Lyman-alpha effective optical depth, tau_eff, over the redshift range 2<z<4.2 from a sample of 86 high-resolution, high-signal-to-noise quasar spectra obtained with Keck/ESI, Keck/HIRES, and Magellan/MIKE. We find that our estimates of the quasar continuum levels in the Ly-alpha forest obtained by spline fitting are systematically biased low, but that this bias can be accounted for using mock spectra. The mean fractional error <Delta C/C_true> is <1% at z=2, 4% at z=3, and 12% at z=4. We provide estimates of the level of absorption arising…
Near-infrared observations of Lyman-break galaxies at redshifts z~3 are beginning to provide constraints on ages, star-formation histories, dust content, metallicities, and stellar masses. At present, uncertainties of more than an order of magnitude are typical for many of these parameters. It is nonetheless interesting to ask what the stellar-population models imply for the existence and luminosities of Lyman-break galaxies at higher redshift. To this end we examine the inferred star-formation rates in two well-studied samples of galaxies as a function of redshift out to z = 10 for various be…
We compare the improved measurement of the Lya forest flux probability distribution at 1.7<z<3.2 presented by Kim et al. (2007) to a large set of hydrodynamical simulations of the Lya forest with different cosmological parameters and thermal histories. The simulations are in good agreement with the observational data if the temperature-density relation for the low density intergalactic medium (IGM), T=T_0 Delta^{gamma-1}, is either close to isothermal or inverted (gamma<1). Our results suggest that the voids in the IGM may be significantly hotter and the thermal state of the low density IGM ma…
We discuss the implementation of Bayesian inversion methods in order to recover the properties of the intergalactic medium from observations of the neutral hydrogen Lyman-$α$ absorptions observed in the spectra of high redshift quasars (the so-called Lyman-$α$ forest). We use two complementary schemes (i) a constrained Gaussian random field linear approach and (ii) a more general non-linear explicit Bayesian deconvolution method which offers in particular the possibility to constrain the parameters of the equation of state for the gas. While relying on prior assumption for the two-point correl…
We investigate the metal contents of Lyman-alpha clouds at 2.2<z<3.6 with 10^13.5<N(HI)<10^14 cm-2 using high resolution, high S/N spectra of 9 quasars obtained with the 10m Keck I telescope. Using an composite spectrum analysis technique, we deduce a mean metallicity of [C/H]<-3.5 for such clouds, which is a factor of more than 10 less than that inferred for Lyman-alpha clouds with N(HI)>10^14.5 cm-2. This result rules out the suggestion that a generation of Population III stars could have polluted the entire universe to a (nearly) uniform metallicity level of [C/H]=-2.5. Cosmological simulat…
At redshifts z >~ 2, most of the baryons reside in the smooth intergalactic medium which is responsible for the low column density Lyman-alpha forest. This photoheated gas follows a tight temperature-density relation which introduces a cut-off in the distribution of widths of the Lyman-alpha absorption lines (b-parameters) as a function of column density. We have measured this cut-off in a sample of nine high resolution, high signal-to-noise quasar spectra, and determined the thermal evolution of the intergalactic medium in the redshift range 2.0-4.5. At redshift z ~ 3, the temperature at the …
For a source of Ly alpha radiation embedded in a neutral intergalactic medium (IGM) prior to the reionization epoch, the emission line is strongly suppressed by the intervening IGM. The damping wing of the so-called Gunn-Peterson trough can extend to the red side of the emission line, and erase a significant fraction of the total line flux. However, the transmitted fraction increases with the size of the local cosmological HII region surrounding the source, and therefore with the ionizing luminosity and age of the source. Motivated by the recent discovery of a Ly alpha emitting galaxy at a red…
We have obtained an exceptionally high S/N, high resolution spectrum of the gravitationally lensed quasar Q1422+231 in order to investigate the metal enrichment of the IGM. A column density distribution function (CDDF) is determined for CIV, which is well fit by a power law with index 1.44 +/- 0.05. Once a correction for incompleteness is applied, we find that the CDDF is consistent with a power law down to log N(CIV) = 11.75, a factor of 10 more sensitive than previously determined. In order to determine whether the CIV enrichment extends to even lower column density HI clouds, we find that a…
We provide new post-COSTAR data on one sightline (Mrk 421) and updated data from another (I Zw 1) from our Hubble Space Telescope (HST) survey of intergalactic Lyman-alpha clouds located along sightlines to four bright quasars passing through well-mapped galaxy voids (16,000 km/s pathlength) and superclusters (18,000 km/s). We report two more definite detections of low-z Lyman-alpha clouds in voids: one at 3047 km/s (heliocentric) toward Mrk 421 and a second just beyond the Local Supercluster at 2861 km/s toward I Zw 1, confirming our earlier discovery of Lyman-alpha absorption clouds in voids…
We use high quality echelle spectra of 24 QSOs to provide a calibrated measurement of the total amount of Lyman-alpha forest absorption (DA) over the redshift range 2.2 < z < 3.2. Our measurement of DA excludes absorption from metal lines or the Lyman-alpha lines of Lyman limit systems and damped Lyman-alpha systems. We use artificial spectra with realistic flux calibration errors to show that we are able to place continuum levels that are accurate to better than 1%. When we combine our results with our previous results between 1.6 < z < 2.2, we find that the redshift evolution of DA is well d…
Very recently a new inversion method has been developped to analyze the intergalactic medium seen in absorption in quasar spectra (the so-called Lyman-alpha forest). This method is applied to recover the temperature of the gas and the underlying density field. Using constraints from the Lyman-beta forest, it is possible to recover this field up to over-densities delta=10. By inverting the HI and CIV absorptions together it has been shown that the CIV/HI ratio varies through the profile of strong lines, beeing larger in the wings. The method can be applied to reconstruct the 3D density field fr…
Artificial absorption spectra are used to test a variety of instrumental and physical effects on the pixel correlation technique for the detection of weak OVI absorption. At HI optical depths <= 0.3-1, the apparent OVI detections are spurious coincidences due to HI absorption at other redshifts. In this range, the apparent OVI optical depth is independent of HI optical depth. At larger HI optical depths, apparent OVI optical depth and HI optical depth are correlated. Detailed modelling is required in order to interpret the significance of this relation. High-resolution spectra of four QSOs tog…
We analyse the evolution of the Intergalactic Medium (IGM) by means of an extended set of large box size hydrodynamical simulations which include pre-heating. We focus on the properties of the z~2 Lyman-alpha forest and on the population of clusters and groups of galaxies at z=0. We investigate the distribution of voids in the Lyman-alpha flux and the entropy-temperature relation of galaxy groups, comparing the simulation results to recent data from high-resolution quasar spectra and from X-ray observations. Pre-heating is included through a simple phenomenological prescription, in which at z=…
We calculate the intergalactic photon density as a function of both energy and redshift for 0 < z < 6 for photon energies from .003 eV to the Lyman limit cutoff at 13.6 eV in a Lambda-CDM universe with $Ω_Λ = 0.7$ and $Ω_{m} = 0.3$. Our galaxy evolution model gives results which are consistent with Spitzer deep number counts and the spectral energy distribution of the extragalactic background radiation. We use our photon density results to extend previous work on the absorption of high energy gamma-rays in intergalactic space owing to interactions with low energy photons and the 2.7 K cosmic b…
Lyman alpha galaxies at high redshifts offer a powerful probe of both the formation of galaxies and the reionization of the intergalactic medium. Lyman alpha line emission is an efficient tool for identifying young galaxies at high redshift, because it is strong in systems with young stars and little or no dust-- properties expected in galaxies undergoing their first burst of star-formation. Lyman alpha galaxies also provide a robust test of the reionization epoch that is independent of Gunn-Peterson trough observations in quasar spectra and is better able to distinguish line center optical de…
The Lyman alpha absorption from intergalactic, once-ionized helium (HeII) has been measured with HST in four quasars over the last few years, over the redshift range 2.4 < z < 3.2. These observations have indicated that the HeII reionization may not have been completed until z\simeq 2.8, and that large fluctuations in the intensity of the HeII-ionizing background were present before this epoch. The detailed history of HeII reionization at higher redshifts is, however, model-dependent and difficult to determine from these observations, because the IGM can be completely optically thick to Lya ph…
The temperature of the diffuse, photo-heated intergalactic medium (IGM) depends on its reionization history because the thermal time scales are long. The widths of the hydrogen Lyman-alpha absorption lines seen in the spectra of distant quasars that arise in the IGM can be used to determine its temperature. We use a wavelet analysis of the Lyman-alpha forest region of quasar spectra to demonstrate that there is a relatively sudden increase in the line widths between redshifts z=3.5 and 3.0, which we associate with entropy injection resulting from the reionization of HeII. The subsequent fall-o…
The evolution of the temperature in the intergalactic medium is related to the reionization of hydrogen and helium, and has important consequences for our understanding of the Lya forest and of galaxy formation in gravitational models of large-scale structure. We measure the temperature-density relation of intergalactic gas from Lya forest observations of eight quasar spectra with high resolution and signal-to-noise ratio, using a new line fitting technique to obtain a lower cutoff of the distribution of line widths from which the temperature is derived. We carefully test the accuracy of this …
Lyman-alpha is now widely used to investigate the galaxy formation and evolution in the high redshift universe. However, without a rigorous understanding of the processes which regulate the Lya escape fraction, physical interpretations of high-z observations remain questionable. We examine six nearby star-forming galaxies to disentangle the role of the dust from other parameters such as gas kinematics, geometry and ISM morphology in the obscuration of Ly-alpha. Thereby we aim to understand the Ly-a escape physics and infer the implications for high-redshift studies. We use HST/ACS to produce c…
We report the discovery of a further line of sight allowing detection of HeII Ly alpha absorption by the intergalactic medium. A HST/STIS survey of 32 bright z ~ 3 quasars selected from the Hamburg Quasar Surveys yielded one detection toward QSO 1157+3143 (z ~ 3, B ~ 17). A 10 orbit follow-up spectrum reveals a UV spectrum significantly supressed by two intervening Lyman limit systems at z=2.77 and 2.94, but with the continuum flux recovering sufficiently shortward of ~ 1700 A to allow study of the HeII absorption spectrum in the redshift range 2.75 < z < 2.97. The absorption is characterized …
(abridged) We present an effective implementation of analytical calculations of the Lyalpha opacity distribution of the Intergalactic Medium (IGM) along multiple lines of sight (LOS) to distant quasars in a cosmological setting. This method fully accounts for the expected correlations between LOS and the cosmic variance in the large-scale modes of the dark matter distribution. Strong correlations extending up to ~300 kpc (proper) and more are found at redshift z~2->3, in agreement with observations. These correlations are investigated using the cross-correlation coefficient and the cross-power…
We present the first intermediate-resolution (lambda / 3000) spectrum of the bright quasi-stellar object 3C273 at wavelengths between 900 and 1200 A. Observations were performed with the Berkeley spectrograph aboard the ORFEUS-SPAS II mission. We detect Lyman beta counterparts to previously-identified intergalactic Lyman-alpha features at cz = 19900, 1600, and 1000 km/s; counterparts to other putative Lyman-alpha clouds along the sight line are below our detection limit. The strengths of the two very low redshift Lyman-beta features, which are believed to arise in Virgo intracluster gas, excee…
We present results from the first high-resolution hydrodynamical simulations of non-Gaussian cosmological models. We focus on the statistical properties of the transmitted Lyman-alpha flux in the high redshift intergalactic medium. Imprints of non-Gaussianity are present and are larger at high redshifts. Differences larger than 20 % at z>3 in the flux probability distribution function for high transmissivity regions (voids) are expected for values of the non linearity parameter f_NL=\pm 100 when compared to a standard LCDM cosmology with f_NL=0. We investigate also the one-dimensional flux bis…
We directly measure the evolution of the intergalactic Lya effective optical depth, tau_eff, over the redshift range 2<z<4.2 from a sample of 86 high-resolution, high-signal-to-noise quasar spectra obtained with the ESI and HIRES spectrographs on Keck, and with the MIKE spectrograph on Magellan. This represents an improvement over previous analyses of the Lya forest from high-resolution spectra in this redshift interval of a factor of two in the size of the data set alone. We pay particular attention to robust error estimation and extensively test for systematic effects. We find that our estim…
A measure of the average depression between Lyman absorption lines in the spectrum of the faint quasar BR1202-0725 ($z_{em}=4.695$) is presented. The relatively high resolution of the spectrum ($\sim 40$ km s$^{-1}$) allows the selection of regions free of strong absorption lines in the Lyman alpha forest. A reliable evaluation of the continuum shape is based on the careful flux calibration and on the large wavelength interval covered (5000--9300 ~Å). A best estimate of $τ_{_{GP}}\leq 0.02\pm 0.03$ has been found for the Gunn-Peterson optical depth at the highest absorption redshift observed a…
Spectra from the Keck HIRES instrument of the Lyman alpha forests in the lines of sight to the A and C components of the gravitationally lensed QSO Q1422+231 were used to investigate the structure of the intergalactic medium at mean redshift z = 3.3 on sub-kpc scales. We measured the cross-correlation amplitude between the two Lyman alpha forests for a mean transverse separation of 120 pc, and computed the RMS column density and velocity differences between individual absorption systems seen in both lines of sight. The RMS differences between the velocity centroids of the Lyman alpha forest li…
We have obtained moderate resolution spectra of the bright QSO H1821+643 (z=0.297) in the wavelength interval 990-1185A with FUSE. Strong, complex OVI 1032 and FeII 1145 absorption arising in gas above several spiral arms and the outer warp of our Galaxy is detected. We have identified absorption by a high negative-velocity (-215 km/s) component of OVI, which corresponds to the limiting velocity of v_LSR = 190+/-20 km/s for Milky Way gas along this line of sight, assuming corotation of disk and halo gas and a flat rotation curve for the outer galaxy. We report the detection of four absorbers i…
The galaxy-IGM part of the Lyman-break survey currently consists of measured redshifts for more than 1000 galaxies with redshift 1.5<z<3.5 along the sightlines to 25 background QSOs. One of the goals of the survey was to measure the influence on the intergalactic medium of energetic feedback from star and black-hole formation. This talk begins with a description of the observed correlations between galaxies and intergalactic absorption lines and ends with a discussion of whether any of the observations provide clear evidence for Mpc-scale superwinds. Although our own observations remain fairly…
The remarkable efficiency of the UVES spectrograph at the VLT has made it possible to push high-resolution, high-S/N ground observations of the Ly-a forest down to z~1.5, gaining new insight into the physical conditions of the intergalactic medium and its evolution over more than 90% of the cosmic time. The universal expansion, the UV ionizing background and the gravitational condensation of structures are the driving factors shaping the number density and the column density distribution of the absorbers. A (limited) contribution of UV photons produced by galaxies is found to be important to r…
Hydrodynamic simulations of Lyman alpha clouds based on ab inito cosmological models have produced results that are in broad agreement with observations. However, further analyses have revealed that, with progressively higher numerical resolution, the median or cutoff line width of the simulated Lyman alpha clouds (i.e. the Doppler parameter) appears to converge to a value significantly below what is observed at z~3 (by about a factor of 1.5). These convergence test simulations do not include feedback from star formation. Given the observed metallicity in the Lyman alpha clouds we suggest that…
Recent numerical simulations have lead to a paradigm shift in our understanding of the intergalactic medium, and the loss of a physical justification for Voigt profile fitting of the Lyman-alpha forest. Many individual lines seen in simulated spectra have significant departures from the Voigt profile, yet could be well fitted by a blend of two or more such lines. We discuss the expected effect on the line profiles due to ongoing gravitational structure formation and Hubble expansion. We develop a method to detect departures from Voigt profiles of the absorption lines in a statistical way and a…
The discovery of Lyman-alpha emission from galaxies at redshifts beyond z~6.5 should not be naively interpreted as implying that the intergalactic medium (IGM) had been reionized at higher redsifts. We show that a cluster of faint undetected sources around each observed galaxy generates an HII region sufficiently large to allow transmission of the galaxy's Lyman-alpha line prior to reionization. We also show that quasars may contribute a significant fraction of the ionizing photons to HII regions around galaxies with a velocity dispersion larger than ~100km/s. These contributing quasars are no…
A new method to extract Omega_b from high redshift intergalactic absorption is described, based on the distribution of HeII Ly-alpha optical depths in the voids in the ionization zone of quasars. A preliminary estimate from recent HST-STIS spectra of PKS 1935-692 at z=3 gives Omega_b h^2 = 0.013^{+0.002}_{-0.001} (1-sigma statistical errors, for a Lambda-CDM cosmology with additional systematic uncertainties) consistent with other estimates.
The 8m class telescopes in the ground-based optical astronomy together with help from the ultra-sharp eye of the Hubble Space Telescope have enabled us to observe forming galaxies beyond redshift $z=5$. In particular, more than twenty Ly$α$-emitting galaxies have already been found at $z > 5$. These findings provide us with useful hints to investigate how galaxies formed and then evolved in the early universe. Further, detailed analysis of Ly$α$ emission line profiles are useful in exploring the nature of the intergalactic medium because the trailing edge of cosmic reionization could be close …
Thomson scattering of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) on moving electrons in the outflows of Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) at redshifts 2-8 contributes to the small-scale CMB anisotropies. The net effect produced by each outflow depends on its level of deviation from spherical symmetry, caused either by an anisotropic energy injection from the nuclear starburst or quasar activity, or by an inhomogeneous intergalactic environment. We find that for plausible outflow parameters consistent with spectroscopic observations of LBGs, the induced CMB anisotropies on arcminute scales reach up to $\s…
We discuss the detectability of Warm/Hot Intergalactic medium (WHIM) via the absorption lines toward bright point sources with a future X-ray satellite mission, XEUS. While we consider bright QSOs as specific examples, the methodology can be applied to bright GRB afterglows. We create mock absorption spectra for bright QSOs (more than 20 QSOs over the all sky) using a light-cone output of a cosmological hydrodynamic simulation. We assume that WHIM is under collisional and photo-ionization equilibrium. If WHIM has a constant metallicity of $Z=0.1Z_\odot$, approximately 2 O{\sc vii} absorption l…
The properties of the Lyman-$α$ absorptions observed in the spectra of QSOs are reviewed: the distribution of column densities and Doppler widths, the redshift evolution, the ``inverse effect'', the clustering. By interpreting the statistics of the line parameters insight is gained about the nature of the absorbers, their sizes, temperatures, confining agents. On the basis of the ``inverse effect'' it is possible to estimate the ultraviolet background radiation at high redshift and, linking this information with the limits on the Gunn-Peterson optical depth, the density of the diffuse part of …
We have performed high-resolution hydrodynamic simulations of the Lyman-alpha forest in a variety of popular cold dark matter dominated cosmologies, including a low density and a vacuum-dominated model. The fluctuation amplitude of these models is chosen to match the observed abundance of galaxy clusters at low redshift. We assume that the intergalactic medium is photoionized and photoheated by a uniform UV-background with the required amplitude to give the observed mean hydrogen absorption. We produce simulated spectra, analyze them by fitting Voigt profiles and compare line statistics with t…
We investigate the impact of environment on the metallicity of the diffuse intergalactic medium. We use pixel correlation techniques to search for weak CIV and OVI absorption in the spectrum of quasar Q1422+231 in regions of the spectrum close to and far from galaxies at z ~ 3. This is achieved both by using the positions of observed Lyman break galaxies and by using strong CIV absorption as a proxy for the presence of galaxies near the line of sight. We find that the metal line absorption is a strong function of not only the HI optical depth (and thus gas density) but also proximity to highly…
We study the clustering of matter in the intergalactic medium from the Lyman-alpha forests seen in the spectra of pairs or groups of z ~ 2 quasars observed with FORS2 and UVES at the VLT-UT2 Kueyen ESO telescope. The sample consists of five pairs with separations 0.6, 1, 2.1, 2.6 and 4.4 arcmin and a group of four quasars with separations from 2 up to 10 arcmin. This unprecedented data set allows us to measure the transverse flux correlation function for a range of angular scales. Correlations are clearly detectable at separations smaller than 3 arcmin. The shape and correlation length of the …
We measure the amount of absorption in the Lyman-alpha forest at 0 < z < 1.6 in HST FOS spectra of 74 QSOs. At 0 < z < 1.6 we find that 79% of the absorption is from the low density intergalactic medium, 12% from metals and 9% from the strong H I lines, nearly identical to the percentages (78, 15 and 7) that we measured independently at z=2 from spectra taken with the Kast spectrograph on the Lick 3-m. At z=1 the low density intergalactic medium absorbs 0.037 +/- 0.004 of the flux. The error includes some but not all of the uncertainty in the continuum level. The remaining part gives relative …
