In the weak coupling limit, we investigate two-leg ladders with a unit cell containing both Cu and O atoms, as a function of doping. For purely repulsive interactions, using bosonization, we find significant differences with the single orbital case: a completely massless quantum critical regime is obtained for a finite range of carrier concentration. In a broad region of the phase diagram the ground state consists of a pattern of orbital currents plus a density wave. NMR properties of the Cu and O nuclei are presented for the various phases.
We study the Luttinger-liquid parameter $K_ρ$ of the Hubbard chain and the Hubbard ladder models by the ordinary perturbation method combined with the Luttinger-liquid relation. According to the Luttinger-liquid relation, the critical exponent $K_ρ$ is related to the charge susceptibility $χ_c$ and the Drude weight D by $ K\sbρ={1/2}(πχ_c D)^{1/2}$. By calculating these quantities with the perturbation method, we obtain $K_ρ$ at the first-order analytically and up to the second-order numerically. We compare these results with results of the Bethe ansatz for the Hubbard chain and that of the nu…
While DMRG calculations find stripes on doped n-leg t-J ladders, little is known about the possible formation of stripes on n-leg Hubbard ladders. Here we report results for a 7x6 Hubbard model with 4 holes. We find that a stripe forms for values of U/t ranging from 6 to 20. For U/t ~ 3-4, the system exhibits the domain wall feature of a stripe, but the hole density is very broadened.
We propose the two-leg fermion-ladder models for SU(2|2) and SU(4) cases. The former is exactly the extended Hubbard model proposed by Essler, Korepin and Schoutens. The later is a new model also with $η$-pairing symmetry which is important for superconductivity. This new extension of the Hubbard model can be solved exactly.
A canonical transformation of a new type is offered as the mean for studying properties of a system of strongly correlated electrons. As an example of the utility of the transformation, it is used to demonstrate the existence of a quantum phase transition in a Hubbard-like model on a quasi-one- dimensional two-leg ladder.
We applied the Recurrent Variational Approach to the two-leg Hubbard ladder. At half-filling, our variational Ansatz was a generalization of the resonating valence bond state. At finite doping, hole pairs were allowed to move in the resonating valence bond background. The results obtained by the Recurrent Variational Approach were compared with results from Density Matrix Renormalization Group.
In the ground state of the doped two-leg Hubbard ladder there are power-law decaying d_{x^2-y^2}-type pairing correlations. It is important to know the strength and the temperature scale of these correlations. For this purpose, we have performed determinantal Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) calculations of the reducible particle-particle interaction in the Hubbard ladder. In this paper, we report on these calculations and show that, at sufficiently low temperatures, resonant particle-particle scattering takes place in the d_{x^2-y^2} pairing channel for certain values of the model parameters. The QM…
Physical nature of dimensional crossovers in weakly coupled Hubbard chains and ladders has been discussed within the framework of the perturbative renormalization-group approach. The difference between these two cases originates from different universality classes which the corresponding isolated systems belong to.
The effect of a weak random potential on two-leg Hubbard ladders is investigated. The random potential is shown to induce Anderson localization except for attractive enough interactions, supressing completely d-wave superconductivity. These localization effects remain very strong even for many ladders coupled by Josephson coupling. Both dc and ac conductivities and localization lengths are obtained. Consequences for the superconducting ladder compound Sr$_x$Ca$_{14-x}$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41+δ}$ are discussed.
We propose theoretically how unconventional superconducting pairing in a repulsively interacting Hubbard ladder can be enhanced via the application of a Floquet driving. Initially the Hubbard ladder is prepared in its charge-density-wave dominated ground state. A periodic Floquet drive is applied which modulates oppositely the energy offset of the two chains and effectively reduces the tunneling along the rungs. This modulation of the energy offsets might be caused by the excitation of a suitable phononic mode in solids or a superlattice modulation in cold atomic gases. We use state-of-the-art…
We study, using a perturbative renormalization group technique, the phase diagrams of bond-aligned and diagonal Hubbard ladders defined as sections of a square lattice with nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor hopping. We find that for not too large hole doping and small next-nearest-neighbor hopping the bond-aligned systems exhibit a fully spin-gapped phase while the diagonal systems remain gapless. Increasing the next-nearest-neighbor hopping typically leads to a decrease of the gap in the bond-aligned ladders, and to a transition into a gapped phase in the diagonal ladders. Embedding …
The two-leg Hubbard ladder is characterized by the ratio of the inter- to intra-leg hopping t_perp/t, the relative interaction strength U/t and the electron filling. Here, using density matrix renormalization group and Monte Carlo simulations, we examine the dependence of the pairing correlations on these parameters. We find that the pairing correlations are enhanced when the top of the bonding quasiparticle band and the bottom of the antibonding band are near the Fermi level. We present results on the single-particle spectral weight and the antiferromagnetic correlations in order to explain t…
We study the magnetic and charge dynamical response of a Hubbard model in a two-leg ladder geometry using the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method and the random phase approximation within the fluctuation-exchange approximation (RPA+FLEX). Our calculations reveal that RPA+FLEX can capture the main features of the magnetic response from weak up to intermediate Hubbard repulsion for doped ladders, when compared with the numerically exact DMRG results. However, while at weak Hubbard repulsion both the spin and charge spectra can be understood in terms of weakly-interacting electron-…
We study signatures of superconductivity in a 2--leg "checkerboard" Hubbard ladder model, defined as a one--dimensional (period 2) array of square plaquettes with an intra-plaquette hopping $t$ and inter-plaquette hopping $t'$, using the density matrix renormalization group method. The highest pairing scale (characterized by the spin gap or the pair binding energy, extrapolated to the thermodynamic limit) is found for doping levels close to half filling, $U\approx 6t$ and $t'/t \approx 0.6$. Other forms of modulated hopping parameters, with periods of either 1 or 3 lattice constants, are also …
Using both the density-matrix renormalization group method and the constrained-path quantum Monte Carlo method, we have studied the ground-state energies and the spin and hole densities of a $12 \times 3$ Hubbard model with open boundary conditions and 6 holes doped away from half-filling. Results obtained with these two methods agree well in the small and intermediate $U$ regimes. For $U/t \geq 6$ we find a ground-state with stripes.
We study the effects of phonons in $N$-leg Hubbard ladders within the framework of a one-loop renormalization group. In particular, we explicitly demonstrate that the role of phonons changes {\em qualitatively} even in the simplest two-leg ladder, as compared to the single-chain system where phonons always dominate. Our numerical results suggest that in the spin-gapped phase of the two-leg ladder, the opening of the spin gap by electron-electron interaction also drives the electron-phonon interaction to strong coupling, but in a {\em subdominant} fashion. Therefore, even though the inclusion o…
Monte Carlo calculations of the irreducible particle-particle interaction on a two-leg Hubbard ladder doped near half-filling are reported. As the temperature is lowered, this interaction develops structure in momentum space similar to the magnetic susceptibility $χ(q)$ and reflects the development of strong short-range antiferromagnetic correlations. Using this interaction, the eigenfunction of the leading singlet pair eigenvalue is found to have $d_{x^2-y^2}$ like symmetry. The single-particle spectral weight is also shown to peak near $(π,0)$ and $(0,π)$ when the ratio of the inter- to intr…
The Hubbard Hamiltonian on a two-leg ladder is studied numerically using quantum Monte Carlo and Exact Diagonalization techniques. A rung interaction, $V$, is turned on such that the resulting model has an exact SO(5) symmetry when $V=-U$. The evolution of the low energy excitation spectrum is presented from the pure Hubbard ladder to the SO(5) ladder. It is shown that the low energy excitations in the pure Hubbard ladder have an approximate SO(5) symmetry.
Using Abelian bosonization with a careful treatment of the Klein factors, we show that a certain phase of the half-filled two-leg ladder, previously identified as having spin-Peierls order, instead exhibits staggered orbital currents with no dimerization.
The behavior of a two leg Hubbard ladder in the presence of a magnetic field is studied by means of Abelian bosonization. We predict the appearance of a new (doping dependent) plateau in the magnetization curve of a doped 2-leg spin ladder in a wide range of couplings. We also discuss the extension to N-leg Hubbard ladders.
Asymmetric two-leg Hubbard ladders with different on-site interactions $U_y$ and hoppings $t_y$ on each leg are investigated using the density matrix renormalization group method and exact diagonalizations. The pairing found in symmetric ladders is robust against the introduction of the leg asymmetry. When studying pairing, one-band Hubbard ladder models are better described as one-dimensional correlated two-band models than as sublattices of higher dimensional systems. The asymmetric Hubbard ladder provides us with a simple model for studying pairing in the crossover regime between charge tra…
Within the kinetic energy driven superconducting mechanism, the effect of the pressure on superconductivity in doped two-leg ladder cuprates is studied. It is shown that the superconducting transition temperature in doped two-leg ladder cuprate superconductors increases with increasing pressure in the underpressure regime, and reaches a maximum in the optimal pressure, then decreases in the overpressure regime. This domed shape of the pressure dependence of the superconducting transition temperature is similar to that of the pressure dependence of the longitudinal part of the superconducting g…
We consider the effects of Umklapp processes in doped two-leg fermionic ladders. These may emerge either at special band fillings or as a result of the presence of external periodic potentials. We show that such Umklapp processes can lead to profound changes of physical properties and in particular stabilize pair-density wave phases.
The spin dynamics of a doped 2-leg spin ladder is investigated by numerical techniques. We show that a hole pair-magnon boundstate evolves at finite hole doping into a sharp magnetic excitation below the two-particle continuum. This is supported by a field theory argument based on a SO(6)-symmetric ladder. Similarities and differences with the resonant mode of the high-T$_c$ cuprates are discussed.
The Hubbard model provides a simple framework in which one can study how certain aspects of the electronic structure of strongly interacting systems can be tuned to optimize the superconducting pairing correlations and how these changes affect the mechanisms giving rise to them. Here we use a weak-coupling random phase approximation to study a two-dimensional Hubbard model with a unidirectional modulation of the hopping amplitudes as the system evolves from the uniform square lattice to an array of weakly coupled two-leg ladders. We find that the pairing correlations retain their dominant $d_{…
The success of models of coupled two-leg spin ladders in describing the magnetic excitation spectrum of La_{2-x}Ba_xCuO_4 had been interpreted previously as evidence for bond-centered stripes. In a recent article, however, we have determined the magnetic coupling induced by the charge stripes between bond- or site-centered spin stripes modeled by two- or three-leg ladders, respectively. We found that only the site-centered models order. We further indicated excellent agreement of a fully consistent analysis of coupled three-leg ladders using a spin wave theory of bond with the experimental dat…
Within the t-J ladder model, superconductivity with a modified d-wave symmetry in doped two-leg ladder cuprates is investigated based on the kinetic energy driven superconducting mechanism. It is shown that the spin-liquid ground-state at the half-filling evolves into the superconducting ground-state upon doping. In analogy to the doping dependence of the superconducting transition temperature in the planar cuprate superconductors, the superconducting transition temperature in doped two-leg ladder cuprates increases with increasing doping in the underdoped regime, and reaches a maximum in the …
Hubbard ladders are an important stepping stone to the physics of the two-dimensional Hubbard model. While many of their properties are accessible to numerical and analytical techniques, the question of whether weakly hole-doped Hubbard ladders are dominated by superconducting or charge-density-wave correlations has so far eluded a definitive answer. In particular, previous numerical simulations of Hubbard ladders have seen a much faster decay of superconducting correlations than expected based on analytical arguments. We revisit this question using a state-of-the-art implementation of the den…
Computational studies of basic models of strongly-correlated electron systems can provide guidance in the search for new materials as well as insight into the physical mechanisms responsible for their properties. Here, we illustrate this by examining what numerical computations have shown us about the 2-leg Hubbard ladder.
The formation of stripes in six-leg Hubbard ladders with cylindrical boundary conditions is investigated for two different hole dopings, where the amplitude of the hole density modulation is determined in the limits of vanishing DMRG truncation errors and infinitely long ladders. The results give strong evidence that stripes exist in the ground state of these systems for strong but not for weak Hubbard couplings. The doping dependence of these findings is analysed.
The Raman response in the antiferromagnetic 2-leg S=1/2 Heisenberg ladder is calculated for various couplings by continuous unitary transformations. For leg couplings above 80% of the rung coupling a characteristic 2-peak structure occurs with a point of zero intensity within the continuum. Experimental data for CaV_2O_5 and La_yCa_(14-y)Cu_24O_41 are analyzed and the coupling constants are determined. Evidence is found that the Heisenberg model is not sufficient to describe cuprate ladders. We argue that a cyclic exchange term is the appropriate extension.
Short-range antiferromagnetic correlations are known to open a spin gap in the repulsive Hubbard model on ladders with $M$ legs, when $M$ is even. We show that the spin gap originates from the formation of correlated pairs of electrons with opposite spin, captured by the hidden ordering of a spin-parity operator. Since both spin gap and parity vanish in the two-dimensional limit, we introduce the fractional generalization of spin parity and prove that it remains finite in the thermodynamic limit. Our results are based upon variational wave functions and Monte Carlo calculations: performing a f…
Using the Density Matrix Renormalization Group and two-leg ladders, we investigate an electronic two-orbital Hubbard model including plaquette diagonal hopping amplitudes. Our goal is to search for regimes where charges added to the undoped state form pairs, presumably a precursor of a superconducting state. For the electronic density $ρ=2$, i.e. the undoped limit, our investigations show a robust $(π,0)$ antiferromagnetic ground state, as in previous investigations. Doping away from $ρ=2$ and for large values of the Hund coupling $J$, a ferromagnetic region is found to be stable. Moreover, whe…
We investigate the optical conductivity of half-filled N-leg Hubbard ladders far into the ``deconfinement'' limit (i.e., weak Hubbard interaction and relatively strong interchain hopping). The N-leg Hubbard ladder is equivalent to an N-band model with velocities obeying $v_1=v_N<v_2=v_{N-1}<...$. When N is not too large $(N=3,4...)$, the band pairs $(i,N+1-i)$ successively flow to the D-Mott state leading to a cascade of charge and spin gaps [U. Ledermann, K. Le Hur, and T. M. Rice, Phys. Rev. B {\bf{62}}, 16383 (2000)], and to the progressive closing of the two-dimensional (2D) Fermi surface …
Using continuous unitary transformations (CUT) we calculate the one-triplet gap for the antiferromagnetic S=1/2 two-leg spin ladder with additional four-spin exchange interactions in a high order series expansion about the limit of isolated rungs. By applying a novel extrapolation technique we calculate the transition line between the rung-singlet phase and a spontaneously dimerized phase with dimers on the legs. Using this efficient extrapolation technique we are able to analyze the crossover from strong rung coupling to weakly coupled chains.
Recent conductivity measurements performed on the hole-doped two-leg ladder material $\mathrm{Sr_{14-x}Ca_xCu_{24}O_{41}}$ reveal an approximately linear power law regime in the c-axis DC resistivity as a function of temperature for $x=11$. In this work, we employ a bosonic model to argue that umklapp processes are responsible for this feature and for the high spectral weight in the optical conductivity which occurs beyond the finite frequency Drude-like peak. Including quenched disorder in our model allows us to reproduce experimental conductivity and resistivity curves over a wide range of e…
Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG) calculations on 4-leg t-J and Hubbard ladders have found a phase exhibiting "stripes" at intermediate doping. Such behavior can be viewed as generalized Friedel oscillations, with wavelength equal to the inverse hole density, induced by the open boundary conditions. So far, this phase has not been understood using the conventional weak coupling bosonization approach. Based on studies from a general bosonization proof, finite size spectrum, an improved analysis of weak coupling renormalization group equations and the decoupled 2-leg ladders limit, we …
Models of interacting Majorana modes may be realized in vortex lattices in superconducting films in contact with topological insulators and may be tuned to the strong-interaction regime by adjusting the chemical potential. Extending the results on one- and two-dimensional Majorana-Hubbard models, here we determine the phase diagrams of two- and four-leg ladders using both field theory and the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) methods.
It is shown, using asymptotically exact methods, that the two dimensional repulsive Hubbard model with strongly modulated interactions exhibits ``high temperature superconductivity". Specifically, the explicit modulation, which has the same symmetry as period 4 bond-centered stripes, breaks the system into an alternating array of more and less heavily hole doped, nearly decoupled two-leg ladders. It is shown that this system exhibits a pairing scale determined by the spin-gap of the undoped two-leg ladder, and a phase ordering temperature proportional to a low positive power of the inter-ladde…
In order to shed light whether the `even-odd conjecture' (even numbers of legs will superconduct accompanied by a spin gap while odd ones do not) for correlated electrons in ladder systems, the pairing correlation is studied for the Hubbard model on a two- and three-leg ladders. We have employed both the weak-coupling renormalization group and the quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) method for strong interactions. For the two-leg Hubbard ladder, a systematic QMC (with a controlled level spacings) has detected an enhanced pairing correlation, which is consistent with the weak-coupling prediction. We also…
We study two-leg spin ladder systems analytically by using a t-J model which includes the interchain spin exchange and the interchain hopping term. The spin part is mapped to a quantum sine-Gordon model via a bosonization method that fully accounts for the phase fluctuation. The spin gap in the Luther-Emery phase evolves to gapless Luttinger liquid phases in even-ladders at certain doping concentration. This transition occurs as doping rate increases and/or the ratio of the interchain spin exchange and hopping to the intrachain couplings decreases. We also estimate the transition temperature a…
Motivated by the recent report of superconductivity in Fe-based ladder materials, we study the pairing state of a multi-orbital t-J model defined on two-leg ladders using the standard mean-field theory. We find that the superconducting order parameters change sign between the $d_{xz}$ and $d_{yz}$ orbitals in most of the phase diagram. By analogy with the two-dimensional Fe planes, we conclude that the leading pairing channel of this state belongs to the $B_{1g}$ symmetry class, which is distinct from the common $s_{\pm}$ gap with the $A_{1g}$ symmetry. By smoothly interpolating from planes in…
We study the pair correlations of a spin-imbalanced two-leg ladder with attractive interactions, using the density matrix renormalization group method (DMRG). We identify regions in the phase diagram spanned by the chemical potential and the magnetic field that can harbor Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO)-like physics. Results for the pair structure factor, exhibiting multiple pairing wave-vectors, substantiate the presence of FFLO-like correlations. We further discuss phase separation scenarios induced by a harmonic trap, which differ from the case of isolated chains.
NMR measurements of the ^{17}O nuclear quadrupole interactions, ^{17}ν_{Q}, show that the charge environment of the S=1/2 Cu_{2}O_{3} two-leg spin-ladder layer of hole-doped A_{14}Cu_{24}O_{41} changes dramatically above a certain temperature, T*. This temperature, T*, decreases with additional doping and is correlated with the magnetic crossover from the spin gap regime to the paramagnetic regime. We demonstrate that these changes in ^{17}ν_{Q} are consistent with an increase in the effective hole concentration in the Cu_{2}O_{3} two-leg ladder above T*. The effective hole concentration incre…
Antiferromagnetic and d_{x2-y2}-pairing correlations appear delicately balanced in the 2D Hubbard model. Whether doping can tip the balance to pairing is unclear and models with additional interaction terms have been studied. In one of these, the square of a local hopping kinetic energy H_W was found to favor pairing. However, such a term can be separated into a number of simpler processes and one would like to know which of these terms are responsible for enhancing the pairing. Here we analyze these processes for a 2-leg Hubbard ladder.
Using a functional renormalization group method, we obtain the phase diagram of the two-leg ladder system within the Holstein-Hubbard model, which includes both electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions. Our renormalization group technique allows us to analyze the problem for both weak and strong electron-phonon coupling. We show that, in contrast results from conventional weak coupling studies, electron-phonon interactions can dominate electron-electron interactions because of retardation effects.
The one-dimensional Hubbard model is integrable in the sense that it has an infinite family of conserved currents. We explicitly construct a ladder operator which can be used to iteratively generate all of the conserved current operators. This construction is different from that used for Lorentz invariant systems such as the Heisenberg model. The Hubbard model is not Lorentz invariant, due to the separation of spin and charge excitations. The ladder operator is obtained by a very general formalism which is applicable to any model that can be derived from a solution of the Yang-Baxter equation.
We study the effect of inter-ladder ferromagnetic (FM) coupling in spin-1/2 two-leg ladders with antiferromagnetic (AFM) legs and rungs interactions using the stochastic series expansion quantum Monte Carlo. We have compared the results with the experimental measurement on Sr$_{14-x}$Ca$_{x}$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$ cuprate which is the candidate for spin-1/2 AFM two-leg ladders with FM inter-ladder interaction. A remarkable asymptotic behavior of susceptibility is observed at very low temperature. In the absence of the magnetic field, thermodynamic behavior of an individual spin-1/2 two-leg ladder i…
We demonstrate the existence of an insulating phase in the three-legged Hubbard ladder at two-thirds filling. In this phase chargons are bound because the physics within a unit cell favors the formation of triplets. The resultant moments lead to a ground state in the Haldane phase, a symmetry protected topological state of matter. In this purely fermionic model, reflection is protecting but time reversal and dihedral symmetries are not, in contrast to spin models.
An extensive Quantum Monte Carlo calculation is performed for the two-leg Hubbard ladder model to clarify whether the singlet pairing correlation decays slowly, which is predicted from the weak-coupling theory but controversial from numerical studies. Our result suggests that the discreteness of energy levels in finite systems affects the correlation enormously, where the enhanced pairing correlation is indeed detected if we make the energy levels of the bonding and anti-bonding bands lie close to each other at the Fermi level to mimic the thermodynamic limit.
We propose that when the Fermi level lies within a wide band and also lies close to but not within a coexisting narrow band, high $T_c$ superconductivity may take place due to the large number of interband pair scattering channels and the small renormalization of the quasiparticles. We show using fluctuation exchange method that this mechanism works for the Hubbard model on a ladder lattice with diagonal hoppings. From this viewpoint, we give a possible explanation for the low $T_c$ for the actual hole doped ladder compound, and further predict a higher $T_c$ for the case of electron doping.
We investigate the formation of stripes in $7\chunks \times 6$ Hubbard ladders with $4\chunks$ holes doped away from half filling using the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method. A parallelized code allows us to keep enough density-matrix eigenstates (up to $m=8000$) and to study sufficiently large systems (with up to $7\chunks = 21$ rungs) to extrapolate the stripe amplitude to the limits of vanishing DMRG truncation error and infinitely long ladders. Our work gives strong evidence that stripes exist in the ground state for strong coupling ($U=12t$) but that the structures found …
We report the magnetic structure of TaFe1+yTe3 single crystals by means of neutron diffraction measurements. TaFe1+yTe3 possesses a layered structure with a formation of two-leg zigzag ladders along the b-axis. We find that TaFe1+yTe3 undergoes an antiferromagnetic transition at 178 K with Fe1 spins of the intra-ladders ferromagnetically aligned while spins of the inter-ladders antiferromagneitcally coupled. Furthermore, spins of the neighboring interstitial Fe2 (y) ions order parallel to the Fe1 spins of each ladder. These findings are distinct from the magnetic structure of the recently-disc…
Using the next-nearest neighbor (zig-zag) Hubbard chain as an one dimemensional model, we investigate the influence of interactions on the position of the Fermi wavevectors with the density-matrix renormalization-group technique (DMRG). For suitable choices of the hopping parameters we observe that electron-electron correlations induce very different renormalizations for the two different Fermi wavevectors, which ultimately lead to a complete destruction of one section of the Fermi sea in a quantum critical point.
We consider two aspects of the ground state of the $U=\infty$ Hubbard ladder: ferromagnetism and the metal-insulator transition at quarter-filling. First, we present rigorous results for the $U=\infty$ Hubbard ladder in the limit of the large inter-chain hopping ($t_{\perp}/t\to\infty$). In this limit, the total spin $S$ of the ground state is shown to be zero for the electron density $n\le 0.5$ and its maximum ($S=S_{max}$) for $n>0.5$. The charge gap at quarter-filling is $2t_{\perp}$. We extend these results to finite $t_{\perp}/t$ by means of the density-matrix renormalization group method…
We investigate filling dependence of the zigzag Hubbard ladder, using density matrix renormalization group method. We illustrate the chemical-potential vs. electron-density and spin gap vs. electron density curves, which reflect characteristic properties of the electron state. On the basis of the obtained phase diagram, we discuss the connection to a novel quasi-one-dimensional superconductor Pr$_2$Ba$_4$Cu$_7$O$_{15-δ}$.
Anfuso and Rosch [Phys. Rev. B 75, 144420 (2007)] showed that the "topological" Haldane phase in a fermionic spin-1/2 ladder can be continuously deformed into a "trivial" phase without explicitly breaking symmetries when local charge fluctuations are taken into account. Within the framework of symmetry protected topological phases, we revisit the model and demonstrate how the Haldane phase can be adiabatically connected to a trivial phase due to charge fluctuations. Furthermore, we show that the Haldane phase remains stable as long as the system is symmetric under particular reflection symmetr…
The charge carrier dynamics of doped electronic correlated systems on ladders and chains, subject to ultrafast photoirradiation, is investigated using the time-dependent Lanczos method. The time-resolved optical conductivity and the temporal profiles of other relevant quantities, including the doublon number, the kinetic energy, and the interaction energy, are calculated. Two competitive factors that can influence the transient charge carrier dynamics are identified as the thermal effect and the charge effect. We demonstrate that the analysis of their interplay can provide an intuitive way to …
