We analyze the inverse scattering series for diffuse waves in random media. In previous work the inverse series was used to develop fast, direct image reconstruction algorithms in optical tomography. Here we characterize the convergence, stability and approximation error of the series
We analyze the convergence and approximation error of the inverse Born series, obtaining results that hold under qualitatively weaker conditions than previously known. Our approach makes use of tools from geometric function theory in Banach spaces. An application to the inverse scattering problem with diffuse waves is described.
We prove convergence of suitable subsequences of weak solutions of a diffuse interface model for the two-phase flow of incompressible fluids with different densities with a nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard equation to weak solutions of the corresponding system with a standard "local" Cahn-Hilliard equation. The analysis is done in the case of a sufficiently smooth bounded domain with no-slip boundary condition for the velocity and Neumann boundary conditions for the Cahn-Hilliard equation. The proof is based on the corresponding result in the case of a single Cahn-Hilliard equation and compactness argum…
This paper provides a new tauberian approach to the study of quantitative time asymptotics of collisionless transport semigroups with general diffuse boundary operators. We obtain an (almost) optimal algebraic rate of convergence to equilibrium under very general assumptions on the initial datum and the boundary operator. The rate is prescribed by the maximal gain of integrability that the boundary operator is able to induce. The proof relies on a representation of the collisionless transport semigroups by a (kind of) Dyson-Phillips series and on a fine analysis of the trace on the imaginary a…
We consider mixed quasi-free states describing $N$ fermions in the mean-field limit. In this regime, the time evolution is governed by the nonlinear Hartree equation. In the large $N$ limit, we study the convergence towards the classical Vlasov equation. Under integrability and regularity assumptions on the initial state, we prove strong convergence in trace and Hilbert-Schmidt norm and provide explicit bounds on the convergence rate for a class of singular potentials of the form $V(x)=|x|^{-α}$, for $α\in(0,1/2)$.
We introduce new diffuse approximations of the Willmore functional and the Willmore flow. They are based on a corresponding approximation of the perimeter that has been studied by Amstutz-van Goethem [{\em Interfaces Free Bound. 14 (2012)}]. We identify the candidate for the $Γ$--convergence, prove the $Γ$--limsup statement and justify the convergence to the Willmore flow by an asymptotic expansion. Furthermore, we present numerical simulations that are based on the new approximation.
We study the convergence behavior of the general inverse $σ_k$-flow on Kähler manifolds with initial metrics satisfying the Calabi Ansatz. The limiting metrics can be either smooth or singular. In the latter case, interesting conic singularities along negatively self-intersected sub-varieties are formed as a result of partial blow-up.
We shall study in this paper the Lipschitz type stabilities and convergence rates of Tikhonov regularization for the recovery of the radiativities in elliptic and parabolic systems with Dirichlet boundary conditions. The Lipschitz type stability estimates are derived. Due to the difficulty of the verification of the existing source conditions or nonlinearity conditions for the considered inverse radiativity problems in high dimensional spaces, some new variational source conditions are proposed. The conditions are rigorously verified in general dimensional spaces under the Lipschitz type stabi…
We construct a solution to inverse mean curvature flow on an asymptotically hyperbolic 3-manifold which does not have the convergence properties needed in order to prove a Penrose--type inequality. This contrasts sharply with the asymptotically flat case. The main idea consists in combining inverse mean curvature flow with work done by Shi--Tam regarding boundary behavior of compact manifolds. Assuming the Penrose inequality holds, we also derive a nontrivial inequality for functions on $S^2$.
Using uniform global Carleman estimates for discrete elliptic and semi-discrete hyperbolic equations, we study Lipschitz and logarithmic stability for the inverse problem of recovering a potential in a semi-discrete wave equation, discretized by finite differences in a 2-d uniform mesh, from boundary or internal measurements. The discrete stability results, when compared with their continuous counterparts, include new terms depending on the discretization parameter h. From these stability results, we design a numerical method to compute convergent approximations of the continuous potential.
An inverse boundary value problem for the 1+1 dimensional wave equation $(\partial_t^2 - c(x)^2 \partial_x^2)u(x,t)=0,\quad x\in\mathbb{R}_+$ is considered. We give a discrete regularization strategy to recover wave speed $c(x)$ when we are given the boundary value of the wave, $u(0,t)$, that is produced by a single pulse-like source. The regularization strategy gives an approximative wave speed $\widetilde c$, satisfying a Hölder type estimate $\| \widetilde c-c\|\leq C ε^γ$, where $ε$ is the noise level.
We study the inverse problem in Optical Tomography of determining the optical properties of a medium $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^n$, with $n\geq 3$, under the so-called diffusion approximation. We consider the time-harmonic case where $Ω$ is probed with an input field that is modulated with a fixed harmonic frequency $ω=\frac{k}{c}$, where $c$ is the speed of light and $k$ is the wave number. We prove a result of Lipschitz stability of the absorption coefficient $μ_a$ at the boundary $\partialΩ$ in terms of the measurements in the case when the scattering coefficient $μ_s$ is assumed to be known and $…
We consider the Born and inverse Born series for scalar waves with a cubic nonlinearity of Kerr type. We find a recursive formula for the operators in the Born series and prove their boundedness. This result gives conditions which guarantee convergence of the Born series, and subsequently yields conditions which guarantee convergence of the inverse Born series. We also use fixed point theory to give alternate explicit conditions for convergence of the Born series. We illustrate our results with numerical experiments.
We derive a simple criterion that ensures uniqueness, Lipschitz stability and global convergence of Newton's method for the finite dimensional zero-finding problem of a continuously differentiable, pointwise convex and monotonic function. Our criterion merely requires to evaluate the directional derivative of the forward function at finitely many evaluation points and for finitely many directions. We then demonstrate that this result can be used to prove uniqueness, stability and global convergence for an inverse coefficient problem with finitely many measurements. We consider the problem of d…
It is by now well-known that one can recover a potential in the wave equation from the knowledge of the initial waves, the boundary data and the flux on a part of the boundary satisfying the Gamma-conditions of J.-L. Lions. We are interested in proving that trying to fit the discrete fluxes, given by discrete approximations of the wave equation, with the continuous one, one recovers, at the limit, the potential of the continuous model. In order to do that, we shall develop a Lax-type argument, usually used for convergence results of numerical schemes, which states that consistency and uniform …
This paper explores and ties together three themes. The first is to establish regularity of a metric tensor, on a manifold with boundary, on which there are given Ricci curvature bounds, on the manifold and its boundary, and a Lipschitz bound on the mean curvature of the boundary. The second is to establish geometric convergence of a (sub)sequence of manifolds with boundary with such geometrical bounds and also an upper bound on the diameter and a lower bound on injectivity and boundary injectivity radius, making use of the first part. The third theme involves the uniqueness and conditional st…
