The enigmatic outflows of the Orion-KL region have raised discussions about their potential driving sources for several decades. Here, we present C18O(2-1) observations combined from the Submillimeter Array and the IRAM30m telescope. The molecular gas is associated on large scales with the famous northwest-southeast high-velocity outflow whereas the high-velocity gas on small spatial scales traces back to the recently identified submm source SMA1. Therefore, we infer that SMA1 may host the driving source of this outflow. Based on the previously published thermal and maser SiO data, source I is the prime candidate to drive the northeast-southwest low-velocity outflow. The source SMA1 is peculiar because it is only detected in several submm wavelength bands but neither in the infrared nor cm regime. We discuss that it may be a very young intermediate- to high-mass protostar. The estimated outflow masses are high whereas the dynamical time-scale of the outflow is short of the order 10^3yrs.
We present full resolution (~0.2mas, ~0.1 A.U.) Very Long Baseline Interferometry maps of the v=1, J=1-0 SiO masers in the Orion-KL nebula. The morphology and turbulent nature of the maser emission argues against models in which the masers form in an expanding and rotating protostellar disk. Rather, we find that the symmetry evident in the SiO maser emission points towards its genesis in a bipolar outflow. Water masers which also appear towards Orion-KL are known to share the velocity profile and double peaked characteristics of the SiO maser emission yet form much further away from the protos…
We present high sensitivity maps of the High Velocity (HV) CO emission toward the molecular outflows around IRc2 and Orion-S in the Orion A molecular cloud. The maps reveal the presence of HV bullets in both outflows with velocities between 40-80kms-1 from the ambient gas velocity. The blue and redshifted CO HV bullets associated with the IRc2 outflow are distributed in thin (12"-20", 0.02-0.04pc) elliptical ring-like structures with a size of ~10"x50" (0.02x0.1pc). The CO emission at the most extreme blue and redshifted velocities (EHV) peaks 20" north of source I, just inside the rings of th…
We present the first contemporaneous 43GHz and 86GHz VLBI images of the v=1 J=2-1 and J=1-0 SiO masers in the Orion-KL nebula. Both maser species exhibit the same general morphology of earlier J=1-0 maser images which appear to trace the edges of a bi-polar conical outflow. Surprisingly, the J=2-1 masers form further from the central protostar than the J=1-0 masers, a fact not readily explained by current SiO maser pumping models. The average magnitude of offsets between corresponding regions of the two masing transitions is approximately 14% of the total radial extent of the SiO maser emissio…
We present high sensitivity and high angular resolution images of the high velocity (vLSR>30kms^-1) CO emission in the J=1-0 and J=2-1 lines of the Orion KL region. These results reveal the morphology of the high-velocity CO emission at the most extreme velocities. High velocity emission have been only detected in two regions: BN/KL (IRc2/I) and Orion-S. The Orion-S region contains a very young (dynamical age of 10^3years), very fast (~110kms^-1) and very compact (<0.16pc) bipolar outflow. From the morphology of the high-velocity gas we estimate that the position of the powering source must be…
We have used widely spaced in time Hubble Space Telescope images to determine tangential velocities of features associated with outflows from young stars. These observations were supplemented by groundbased telescope spectroscopy and from the resultant radial velocities, space velocities were determined for many outflows. Numerous new moving features were found and grouped into known and newly assigned Herbig Haro objects. It was found that stellar outflow is highly discontinuous, as frequently is the case, with long-term gaps of a few hundred years and that these outflow periods are marked by…
Multiple optical outflows are known to exist in the vicinity of the active star formation region called Orion-South (Orion-S). We have mapped the velocity of low ionization features in the brightest part of the Orion Nebula, including Orion-S, and imaged the entire nebula with the Hubble Space Telescope. These new data, combined with recent high resolution radio maps of outflows from the Orion-S region, allow us to trace the origin of the optical outflows. It is confirmed that HH 625 arises from the blueshifted lobe of the CO outflow from 136-359 in Orion-S while it is likely that HH 507 arise…
We report the detection of several new circumstellar disks seen in silhouette in the outskirts of the Orion nebula and M43, detected as part of our Halpha survey of Orion with the HST/ACS. Several of the disks show bipolar reflection nebulae, microjets, or temporal variability. Two disks in our sample are large and particularly noteworthy: A nearly edge-on disk, d216-0939, is located several arcminutes northwest of M43 and resembles the famous HH30 disk/jet system in Taurus. It drives the 0.15 pc long bipolar outflow HH667, and exhibits a remarkable asymmetric reflection nebula. With a diamete…
Images of an 8 square minute region around the Orion KL source have been made in the J=7-6 (806 GHz) and J=4-3 (461 GHz) lines of CO with angular resolutions of 13" and 18". These data were taken employing on-the-fly mapping and position switching techniques. Our J=7-6 data set is the largest image of Orion with the highest sensitivity and resolution obtained so far in this line. Most of the extended emission arises from a Photon Dominated Region (PDR), but 8% is associated with the Orion ridge. For the prominent Orion KL outflow, we produced ratios of the integrated intensities of our J=7-6 a…
We present a kinematic study of the Herbig-Haro objects HH 202, 203 and 204 using Halpha and [NII] Fabry-Perot velocity maps. For HH 202 we find new features that could belong to this HH object or that perhaps are associated with an outflow different from HH 202. Because of its high velocity (up to 100 km/seg) this outflow probably can be a HH flow not catalogued previously. Large internal motions are found in the fainter regions of HH 203-204, as well as evidence of transverse density gradients. We show that the apex of HH 204 is the zone of maximum velocity in agreement with bow shock models…
We present wide-field near-IR images of Orion A. K and H2 1-0S(1) images of a contiguous 8 sqr degree region are compared to photometry from Spitzer and dust-continuum maps obtained with MAMBO and SCUBA. We also measure proper motions for H2 features in 33 outflows. We increase the number of known H2 outflows in Orion A to 116. A total of 111 H2 flows were observed with Spitzer; outflow sources are identified for at least 72 of them. The MAMBO 1200 micron maps cover 97 H2 flows; 57 of them are associated with Spitzer sources and dust cores or extended emission. The H2 jets are widely distribut…
We present the results of a photographic and CCD imaging survey for Herbig-Haro (HH) objects in the L1630 and L1641 giant molecular clouds in Orion. The new HH flows were initially identified from a deep H-alpha film from the recently commissioned AAO/UKST H-alpha Survey of the southern sky. Our scanned H-alpha and broad band R images highlight both the improved resolution of the H-alpha survey and the excellent contrast of the H-alpha flux with respect to the broad band R. Comparative IVN survey images allow us to distinguish between emission and reflection nebulosity. Our CCD H-alpha, [SII],…
We present the detection and modeling of more than 70 far-IR pure rotational lines of water vapor, including the 18O and 17O isotopologues, towards Orion KL. Observations were performed with the Long Wavelength Spectrometer Fabry-Perot (LWS/FP; R~6800-9700) on board the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) between ~43 and ~197 um. The water line profiles evolve from P-Cygni type profiles (even for the H2O18 lines) to pure emission at wavelengths above ~100 um. We find that most of the water emission/absorption arises from an extended flow of gas expanding at 25+-5 kms^-1. Non-local radiative trans…
As part of the first far-IR line survey towards Orion KL, we present the detection of seven new rotationally excited OH Lambda-doublets (at 48, 65, 71, 79, 98 and 115 um). Observations were performed with the Long Wavelength Spectrometer (LWS) Fabry-Perots on board the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO). In total, more than 20 resolved OH rotational lines, with upper energy levels up to 620 K, have been detected at an angular and velocity resolutions of 80$'' and 33 km s^-1 respectively. OH line profiles show a complex behavior evolving from pure absorption, P-Cygni type to pure emission. We als…
The spectra of Herbig Haro objects are usually characteristic of ionization and excitation in shock-heated gas, whether an internal shock in an unsteady outflow or a bow shock interface with the interstellar medium. We examine the eastern-most shock -- the leading optically visible shock -- of a Herbig Haro outflow (HH 529) seen projected on the face of the Orion Nebula, using deep optical echelle spectroscopy, showing that the spectrum of this gas is consistent with photoionization by $θ^1$ Ori C. By modeling the emission lines, we determine a gas-phase abundance of Fe which is consistent wit…
We report a detection in the interstellar medium of an infrared transition within the electronic ground state of the deuterated hydrogen molecule, HD. Through a deep integration with the Short-Wavelength-Spectrometer on ISO, the pure rotational v=0-0 R(5) line at 19.43um was detected toward the Orion (OMC-1) outflow at its brightest H_2 emission region, Peak 1. The ~20" beam-averaged observed flux of the line is (1.84 +- 0.4) 10^-5 erg cm^-2 s^-1 sr^-1. Upper flux limits were derived for sixteen other rotational and ro-vibrational HD lines in the wavelength range 2.5 to 38 um. We utilize the r…
We report the discovery of a dozen Herbig-Haro jets illuminated by the Lyman continuum and/or softer far-ultraviolet radiation fields of nearby high mass stars. Five irradiated outflows lie in the outer parts of the Orion Nebula and seven lie near the reflection nebula NGC 1333 in the Perseus molecular cloud. We propose that the UV radiation field has eroded residual material left over from the formation of these young source stars. Many of the irradiated jets exhibit unusual C-shaped bending. In the outskirts of the Orion Nebula, most irradiated jets bend away from the core of the nebula. On …
I compare theoretical models of massive star formation with observations of the Orion Hot Core, which harbors one of the closest massive protostars. Although this region is complicated, many of its features (size, luminosity, accretion disk, HII region, outflow) may be understood by starting with a simple model in which the star forms from a massive gas core that is a coherent entity in approximate pressure balance with its surroundings. The dominant contribution to the pressure is from turbulent motions and magnetic fields. The collapse can be perturbed by interactions with other stars in the…
I discuss different theories of massive star formation: formation from massive cores, competitive Bondi-Hoyle accretion, and protostellar collisions. I summarize basic features of the Turbulent Core Model (TCM). I then introduce the Orion Kleinmann-Low (KL) region, embedded in the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC) and one of the nearest regions of massive star formation. The KL region contains three principal radio sources, known as "I", "n" and "BN". BN is known to be a runaway star, almost certainly set in motion by dynamical ejection within the ONC from a multiple system of massive stars, that wou…
The properties of outflows powered by massive stars are reviewed with an emphasis on the nearest examples, Orion and Cepheus-A. The Orion OMC1 outflow may have been powered by the dynamical decay of a non-hierarchical massive star system that resulted in the ejection of the BN object, and poossibly radio soruces I and n from the OMC1 core. This interaction must have produced at least one massive binary whose gravitational binding energy ejected the stars and powered the outflow. A specific model for the coupling of this energy to the gas is proposed. The radio source HW2 in the Cep-A region ap…
We present Spitzer IRAC and IRS observations of the dark cloud L1287. The mid-infrared (MIR) IRAC images show deeply embedded infrared sources in the vicinity of the FU Orionis objects RNO 1B and RNO 1C suggesting their association with a small young stellar cluster. For the first time we resolve the MIR point source associated with IRAS 00338+6312 which is a deeply embedded intermediate-mass protostar driving a known molecular outflow. The IRAC colors of all objects are consistent with young stars ranging from deeply embedded Class 0/I sources to Class II objects, part of which appear to be l…
We have surveyed the inner 5' of the Orion Nebula by means of Halpha and [NII] Fabry-Perot imaging spectroscopy to present a kinematical study of the Herbig-Haro objects in the nebula. The objects studied in this work are HH 202, 203, 204, 529, 269 and other associated features. For HH 202 we find new features that, because of their high velocities (up to 100 km/seg) indicate the presence of an outflow that probably is a HH flow not catalogued previously. HH 202 could be only a part of this larger outflow. Large internal motions are found in the fainter regions of HH 203-204, as well as eviden…
MERLIN measurements of 1.6-GHz OH masers associated with Orion-BN/KL are presented, and the data are compared with data on other masers, molecular lines, compact radio continuum sources and infrared sources in the region. OH masers are detected over an area 30 arcsec in diameter, with the majority lying along an approximately E-W structure that extends for approx. 18~arcsec, encompassing the infrared sources IRc2, IRc6 and IRc7. Radial velocities range from -13 to +42 km/s. The system of OH masers shows a velocity gradient together with non-circular motions. The kinematics are modelled in term…
A comprehensive picture of high-mass star formation has remained elusive, in part because examples of high-mass YSOs tend to be relatively distant, deeply embedded, and confused with other emission sources. These factors have impeded dynamical investigations within tens of AU of high-mass YSOs--scales that are critical for probing the interfaces where outflows from accretion disks are launched and collimated. Using observations of SiO masers obtained with the VLA and the VLBA, the KaLYPSO project is overcoming these limitations by mapping the structure and dynamical/temporal evolution of the m…
We present observations towards one of the closest regions of high mass star formation, Orion BN/KL, performed at both low resolution mode (grating mode) and high resolution mode (Fabry-Perot) with the Long Wavelength Spectrometer on board the Infrared Space Observatory. We detected the CO rotational lines from Jup = 15 to Jup = 45. While the lines with Jup<= 32 are spectrally unresolved, the higher lying lines show a broadened profile. Finally, we detected two 13CO lines, namely at Jup = 18 and 24, from which we could derive the opacities of the relative 12CO lines. The LVG analysis of the ob…
We present the first thermal-infrared imaging photometry for several embedded sources in the OMC1 South cloud core in the Orion nebula, and propose that some of these drive optical Herbig-Haro jets emerging from the region. Thermal-infrared images at 8.8 and 11.7 micron obtained at Gemini South show a handful of sources in OMC1-S with no visual-wavelength counterparts, although a few can be seen in recent near-infrared data. For the three brightest mid-infrared sources, we also present 18.75 micron photometry obtained with the Keck telescope. The most prominent blueshifted outflows in the Orio…
Observations are reported of H2 IR emission in the S(1) v=1-0 line at 2.121 microns in the Orion Molecular Cloud, OMC1, using the GriF instrument on the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope. GriF is a combination of adaptive optics and Fabry-Perot interferometry, yielding a spatial resolution of 0.15" to 0.18" and a velocity discrimination as high as 1 km/s. Thanks to the high spatial and velocity resolution of the GriF data, 193 bright H2 emission regions can be identified in OMC1. The general characteristics of these features are described in terms of radial velocities, brightness and spatial disp…
The Chandra Orion Ultradeep project (COUP) observation described in a companion paper by Getman et al. provides an exceptionally deep X-ray survey of the Orion Nebula Cluster and associated embedded young stellar objects. Membership of the region is important for studies of the stellar IMF, cluster dynamics, and star formation. The COUP study detected 1616 X-ray sources. In this study we confirm cloud membership for 1315 stars, identify 16 probable foreground field stars having optical counterparts with discrepant proper motions, and classify the remaining 285 X-ray sources, of which 51 are li…
We present the analysis of four 3.6 cm radio continuum archival observations of Orion obtained using the Very Large Array in its A-configuration, with $0\rlap.{''}3$ angular resolution. The observations were made during the period 1994-1997. In a region of $4' \times 4'$, we detect a total of 77 compact radio sources. Of the total of detected sources, 54 are detected in one or more of the individual observations and 36 of these show time variability (by more than 30%) between the observed epochs. A deep image made from averaging all data shows an additional 23 faint sources, in the range of 0.…
We present an atlas of three-dimensional (position-position-velocity) spectra of the Orion Nebula in optical emission lines from a variety of different ionization stages: [O I] 6300, [S II] 6716,6731, [N II] 6584, [S III] 6312, H alpha 6563, and [O III] 5007. These transitions provide point to point information about the physical structure and kinematics of the nebula at an effective resolution of 3'' x 2'' x 10 km/s, clearly showing the large scale behavior of the ionized gas and the presence of localized phenomena such as Herbig-Haro outflows. As an example application of the atlas, we prese…
We present the first submm (865mum) imaging spectral line survey at one arcsecond resolution conducted with the Submillimeter Array toward Orion-KL. Within the 2x2 GHz bandpasses (lower and upper sidebands, 337.2-339.2GHz and 347.2-349.2GHz), we find about 145 spectral lines from 13 species, 6 isotopologues, and 5 vibrational excited states. Most nitrogen-bearing molecules are strong toward the hot core, whereas the oxygen-bearing molecules peak toward the south-west in the so-called compact ridge. Imaging of spectral lines is shown to be an additional tool to improve the identifications of mo…
We have mapped four massive cores in Orion using the \ammonia (J,K) = (1,1) and (J,K) = (2,2) inversion transitions, as part of our effort to study the pre--protostellar phase of massive star formation. These cores were selected to be quiescent, i.e. they contain no apparent IR sources and are not associated with any molecular outflows. These cores are one order of magnitude more massive than dark cloud cores and have about twice the line width. This paper focuses on their temperature structure. We find a statistically significant correlation between the gas kinetic temperature and the gas col…
We report the detection of spatially-extended mid-infrared emission around the luminous embedded star IRc9 in OMC-1, as seen in 8.8, 11.7, and 18.3 micron images obtained with T-ReCS on Gemini South. The extended emission is asymmetric, and the morphology is reminiscent of warm dust disks around other young stars. The putative disk has a radius of roughly 1.5 arcsec (700 AU), and a likely dust mass of almost 10 Earth masses. The infrared spectral energy distribution of IRc9 indicates a total luminosity of about 100 Lsun, implying that it shall become an early A-type star when it reaches the ma…
Using the ASTE 10 m submillimeter telescope and the 1.4 m Infrared Survey Facility (IRSF), we performed an extensive outflow survey in the Orion Molecular Cloud -2 and -3 region. Our survey, which includes 41 potential star-forming sites, has been newly compiled using multi-wavelength data based on millimeter- and submillimeter-continuum observations as well as radio continuum observations. From the CO (3-2) observations performed with the ASTE 10 m telescope, we detected 14 CO molecular outflows, seven of which were newly identified. This higher detection rate, as compared to previous CO (1-0…
The BN/KL region in the Orion molecular cloud is an archetype in the study of the formation of stars much more massive than the Sun. This region contains luminous young stars and protostars, but it is difficult to study because of overlying dust and gas. Our basic expectations are shaped to some extent by the present theoretical picture of star formation, the cornerstone of which is that protostars acrete gas from rotating equatorial disks, and shed angular momentum by ejecting gas in bipolar outflows. The main source of the outflow in the BN/KL region may be an object known as radio source I,…
We have surveyed molecular line emission from Orion BN/KL from 42.3 to 43.6 GHz with the Green Bank Telescope. Sixty-seven lines were identified and ascribed to 13 different molecular species. The spectrum at 7 mm is dominated by SiO, SO2, CH3OCH3, and C2H5CN. Five transitions have been detected from the SiO isotopologues 28SiO, 29SiO, and 30SiO. We report here for the first time the spectra of the 29SiO and 30SiO v=0 J=1-0 emission in Orion BN/KL, and we show that they have double-peaked profiles with velocity extents similar to the main isotopologue. The main motivation for the survey was th…
We present high angular resolution (~ 1''), sensitive CO(2-1) line observations of the region OMC1 South in the Orion Nebula made using the Submillimeter Array (SMA). We detect the CO(2-1) high velocity outflow that was first found by Rodriguez-Franco et al. (1999a) with the IRAM 30 m. Our observations resolve the outflow, whose velocity-integrated emission has a deconvolved width of 0.89'' \pm 0.06'' (490 AU) and a projected length of ~ 48'' (21,000 AU) with very high redshifted and blueshifted gas with velocities of about \pm 80 km/s. This outflow is among the most collimated (~ 3 degrees) a…
Previous studies of young stellar objects (YSOs) have uncovered a number of associated parsec-scale optical outflows, the majority of which are driven by low-mass, embedded Class I sources. Here we examine more evolved Classical T Tauri stars (CTTSs), i.e. Class II sources, to determine whether these are also capable of driving parsec-scale outflows. Five such sources are presented here - CW Tau, DG Tau, DO Tau, HV Tau C and RW Aur, all of which show optical evidence for outflows of the order of 1pc (24' at the distance of Taurus-Auriga). These sources were previously known only to drive "micr…
We mapped quiescent 807 GHz CO(7-6) emission from Orion along a strip in RA extending from 0.7 pc west to 1.2 pc east of Ori theta 1C. The lines arise in warm gas with T > 40 K. The line brightness temperature is > 160 K in the di- rection of theta 1C, more than twice the dust temperature, and still exceeds 35 K more than a parsec east of theta 1C. The lines are narrow, with a max- imum velocity width of 7 km s^-1 near theta 1C and decreasing to 1.5-3 km s^-1 at the map boundaries. The density of the emitting gas is > 10^4 cm^-3 and the column density exceeds 10^21 cm^-2. The correlation of th…
If massive stars form by disk accretion, then bipolar outflows should be generated as in the case of low-mass star formation. High accretion rates lead to high outflow rates and make the wind density very large near the protostar. We therefore predict that massive protostars have very small, jet-like HII regions confined by their outflows; we identify these HII regions with "hypercompact" (<0.01 pc) HII regions. Their lifetime is approximately equal to the accretion timescale (~10^5 yr), much longer than the sound-crossing and dynamical timescales of the ionized region. We present an analytic …
We present the results of spectroscopy of four bright proplyds in the Orion Nebula obtained at a velocity resolution of 6 km/s. After careful isolation of the proplyd spectra from the confusing nebular radiation, the emission line profiles are compared with those predicted by realistic dynamic/photoionization models of the objects. The spectral line widths show a clear correlation with ionization potential, which is consistent with the free expansion of a transonic, ionization-stratified, photoevaporating flow. Fitting models of such a flow simultaneously to our spectra and HST emission line i…
We present the results of a high spectral resolution study of the circumstellar (CS) gas around the intermediate mass, pre-main sequence star UX Ori. The results are based on a set of 10 echelle spectra, monitoring the star on time scales of months, days and hours. A large number of transient blueshifted and redshifted absorption features are detected in the Balmer and in many metallic lines. A multigaussian fit is applied to determine for each transient absorption the velocity, v, dispersion velocity, Delta v, and the parameter R, which provides a measure of the absorption strength of the CS …
