We summarize evidence that the halo of the Milky Way comprises two different, and broadly overlapping, stellar components. The two structures exhibit different chemical compositions, spatial distributions, and kinematics. These results were obtained through an analysis of more than 20,000 calibration stars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The duality of the stellar halo directly impacts galaxy formation models, for the Milky Way and other large spirals.
One of the long-standing problems in modern astronomy is the curious division of Galactic globular clusters, the "Oosterhoff dichotomy," according to the properties of their RR Lyrae stars. Here, we find that most of the lowest-metallicity ([Fe/H]<-2.0) clusters, which are essential to an understanding of this phenomenon, display a planar alignment in the outer halo. We use a numerical simulation of a loose group containing a Milky Way halo to probe that in the hierarchical universe the Magellanic Clouds and some dSphs have been accreted into the Milky Way halo from a late infalling group of dwarfs. Our simulations show that the tidal breakup of the Magellanic group occurs before it enters the Milky Way halo. Only half of the satellites contributed from the group are predicted to be inside the Milky Way virial radius. Half of its subhalos survive outside the current virial radius in the form of satellites, whereas the remaining material contributes to the …
In 1998 several papers claim the detection of an ubiquitous gaseous phase within the Galactic halo. Here we like to focus on the detections of X-ray emitting gas within the Galactic halo as well as the discovery of a pervasive neutral Galactic halo gas. We discuss critically the major differences between the recent publications as well as the limitations of the analyses.
Stars and their kinematics provide one of the tools available for studies of the shapes of galaxies and their halos. In this review I focus on two specific applications: the shape of the Milky Way dark halo and the shape of the LMC disk. The former is constrained by a variety of observations, but an accurate determination of the axial ratio q_DH remains elusive. A very flattened Milky Way dark halo with q_DH < 0.4 is ruled out, and values q_DH > 0.7 appear most consistent with the data. To account for the observed differential metallicity distribution (DMD) of the Milky Way halo, a semi-analytical model is presented in the framework of the hierarchical merging paradigm for structure formation. It is assumed that the Milky Way halo is composed of a number of sub-haloes with properties either as observed in the dwarf satellite galaxies of the Local group (shape of metallicity distribution, effective yield) or derived from calculations of structure formation (sub-halo distribution function). We show that the globular cluster luminosity function (GCLF) of the inner halo of the Milky Way is statistically different from the GCLF of the outer halo. We also find a similar difference between the inner and outer halo population of M31. We assert that this difference is evidence for some form of dynamical evolution of the cluster population and/or a dependence of GCLF shape on the environment in which the cluster population formed. We combine CaII/NaI absorption and HI 21 cm emission line measurements to analyse the metal abundances, the distribution, the small-scale structure, and the physical conditions of intermediate- and high-velocity gas in the Galactic halo.
We increase the number of remote halo tracers by using blue horizontal branch (BHB) stars out to Galactocentric distances of 130 kpc. We use SDSS EDR photometry and the VLT to detect 16 BHB stars at Galactocentric distances 70 < r < 130, and to measure their radial velocities. We find the mass of the Milky Way is M =1.7^{+3.0}_{-0.6} x 10^{12} solar masses. When completed this survey will: (i) substantially reduce the errors in the total mass and extent of the Milky Way halo, (ii) map the velocity space in a hitherto unexplored region of the halo.
In this contribution we discuss the expected properties of our halo if our Galaxy had been built from mergers of smaller systems. Using both analytic arguments and high-resolution simulations, we find that the Galactic halo in the Solar neighbourhood should have a smooth spatial distribution and that its stellar velocity ellipsoid should consist of several hundred kinematically cold streams, relicts from the different merging events. Surface photometry detections of red and exceedingly faint halos around galaxies have resurrected the old question of whether some non-negligible fraction of the missing baryons of the Universe could be hiding in the form of faint, hydrogen-burning stars. The optical/near-infrared colours of these red halos have proved very difficult to reconcile with any normal type of stellar population, but can in principle be explained by advocating a bottom-heavy stellar initial mass function. Microlensing searches aim to detect compact halo dark matter via its gravitational lensing effect on stars within the Large Magellanic Cloud. The most recent results have led to the claim that roughly one fifth of the galactic halo dark matter may be in the form of compact, solar-mass objects. We analyze this hypothesis by considering the goodness-of-fit of the best-fit halo dark matter solutions to the observational data. We present a correlation analysis of the diffuse X-ray background emission of the ROSAT all-sky survey with the Leiden/Dwingeloo 21-cm HI line survey. We derive a consistent model for the diffuse X-ray background emission over about 50% of the sky. Only three diffuse X-ray components are necessary to fit the ROSAT data from 0.1 keV to 2.4 keV: a) the Local Hot Bubble, b) the Milky Way Halo, and c) the extragalactic X-ray background. We have compiled a sample of 699 stars from the recent literature with detailed chemical abundance information (spanning -4.2 < [Fe/H] < +0.3), and we compute their space velocities and Galactic orbital parameters. We identify members of the inner and outer stellar halo populations in our sample based only on their kinematic properties and then compare the abundance ratios of these populations as a function of [Fe/H]. In the metallicity range where the two populations overlap (-2.5 < [Fe/H] < -1.5), the mean [Mg/Fe] of the outer halo is lower than the inner halo by ~0.1 dex. For [Ni/Fe] and [B…
We study the spatial distribution of satellite galaxies by assuming that they follow the dark matter distribution. This assumption is supported by semi-analytical studies based on high-resolution numerical simulations. We find that for a Milky-Way type halo, if only a dozen satellite galaxies are observed, then they can lie on a ``great'' disk with an rms height of about 40 kpc. The normal to the plane is roughly isotropic on the sky. These results are consistent with the observed properties of the satellite galaxies in the Milky Way. The distribution of shapes of galaxies' dark halos provides a basic test for models of galaxy formation. To-date, few dark halo shapes have been measured, and the results of different methods appear contradictory. We derive new constraints on the mass of the Milky Way's dark matter halo, based on a set of halo stars from SDSS as kinematic tracers. Our sample comprises 2401 rigorously selected Blue Horizontal-Branch (BHB) halo stars drawn from SDSS DR-6. To interpret these distributions, we compare them to matched mock observations drawn from two different cosmological galaxy formation simulations designed to resemble the Milky Way, which we presume to have an appropriate orbital distribution of halo stars. We describe a new set of self-consistent, equilibrium disk galaxy models that incorporate an exponential disk, a Hernquist model bulge, an NFW halo and a central supermassive black hole. The models are derived from explicit distribution functions for each component and the large number of parameters permit detailed modeling of actual galaxies. The GLAST LAT Collaboration is one among several experimental groups, covering a wide range of approaches, pursuing the search for the nature of dark matter. The GLAST LAT has the unique ability to find new sources of high energy gamma radiation emanating directly from WIMP annihilations in situ in the universe. The satellite-disk interaction provides limits on halo properties in two ways: (1) physical arguments motivate the excitation of observable Galactic disk structure in the presence of a massive halo, although precise limits on halo parameters are scenario-dependent; (2) conversely, the Milky Way as a whole has significant dynamical effect on LMC structure and this interaction also leads to halo limits. Together, these scenarios give strong corroboration of our current gravitational mass estimates and suggests a rapidly evolving LMC.
Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) DR5 photometric data with $120^{\circ} < α< 270^{\circ}$, $25^{\circ} < δ< 70^{\circ}$ are searched for new Milky Way companions or substructures in the Galactic halo. We study numerical simulations of satellite galaxy disruption in a potential resembling that of the Milky Way. Our goal is to assess whether a merger origin for the stellar halo would leave observable fossil structure in the phase-space distribution of nearby stars. We show how mixing of disrupted satellites can be quantified using a coarse-grained entropy. Although after 10 billion years few obvious asymmetries remain in the distribution of particles in configuration space, strong correlations are still present in velocity space. In a previous paper (Paper I) a method was developed to determine the shapes of dark matter halos of spiral galaxies from the flaring and velocity dispersion of the gas layer. Here I present the results for the almost edge-on Scd galaxy NGC 4244 (Paper II Paper III) and preliminary results for the Milky Way. NGC 4244's dark matter halo is found to be highly flattened with a shortest-to-longest axis ratio of 0.2 +0.3-0.1. We have used data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 5 to explore the overall structure and substructure of the stellar halo of the Milky Way using about 4 million color-selected main sequence turn-off stars. We fit oblate and triaxial broken power-law models to the data, and found a `best-fit' oblateness of the stellar halo 0.5<c/a<0.8, and halo stellar masses between Galactocentric radii of 1 and 40kpc of (3.7+/-1.2)x10^8 M_sun. The measurements of the possible gravitational microlensing events are analysed with a simple yet accurate disc--halo model of the Milky Way Galaxy. This comprises a luminous exponential disc embedded in a flattened dark matter halo with density varying like ${\rm distance}^{-1.8}$. Including a disc has the important effect of lowering the implied masses of the dark matter objects. The latest results of the QUEST survey for RR Lyrae stars are described. This survey, which is designed to find and characterize sub-structures in the halo of our Galaxy, has covered about 700 square degrees of the sky and has detected 693 RR Lyrae stars, most of which are new discoveries. The spatial distribution of the RR Lyrae stars reveals several interesting groups in the halo. If the dark matter in the Universe is made of weakly self-interacting particles, they may self-annihilate and emit gamma-rays. We use high resolution numerical simulations to estimate directly the annihilation flux from the central regions of the Milky Way and from dark matter substructures in its halo. Although such estimates remain uncertain because of their strong dependence on the structure of the densest regions, our numerical experiments suggest that less direct calculations have overestimated the emission both from the centre and from halo substructure. We carry on a new analysis of the sample of MACHO microlensing candidates towards the LMC. Our main purpose is to determine the lens population to which the events may belong. We give particular emphasis to the possibility of characterizing the Milky Way dark matter halo population with respect to the LMC one. Indeed, we show that only a fraction of the events have characteristics that match those expected for lenses belonging to the MACHO population of the Milky Way halo. We have compiled a new sample of 240 halo objects with accurate distance and radial velocity measurements, including globular clusters, satellite galaxies, field blue horizontal branch stars and red giant stars from the Spaghetti survey. The new data lead to a significant increase in the number of known objects for Galactocentric radii beyond 50 kpc, which allows a reliable determination of the radial velocity dispersion profile out to very large distances. Million degree gas is present at near-zero redshift and is due either to a gaseous Galactic Halo or a more diffuse but very massive Local Group medium. We can discriminate between these models because the column densities should depend on location in the sky, either relative to the Galaxy bulge or to the M31-Milky Way axis. We present a comprehensive study of the evolution of the abundances of intermediate mass elements, from C to Zn, in the Milky Way halo and in the local disk. We use a consistent model to describe the evolution of those two galactic subsystems. The halo and the disk are assumed to evolve independently, both starting with gas of primordial composition, and in different ways: strong outflow is assumed to take place during the $\sim$1 Gyr of the halo formation, while the disk is built by slowly infalling gas. We review evidence that the census of Milky Way satellites similar to those known may be incomplete at low latitude due to obscuration and in the outer halo due to a decreasing sensitivity to dwarf satellites with distance. We evaluate the possible impact that incompleteness has on comparisons with substructure models by estimating corrections to the known number of dwarfs using empirical and theoretical models. If we assume that the true distribution of Milky Way satellites is uniform with latitude, then we estimate a 33% incompleteness in the total number of dwarfs due to obscuration at low …
We analyse the dynamical properties of substructures in a high-resolution dark matter simulation of the formation of a Milky Way-like halo in a $Λ$CDM cosmology. Our goal is to shed light on the dynamical peculiarities of the Milky Way satellites. Our simulations show that about 1/3 of the subhalos have been accreted in groups. We quantify this clustering by measuring the alignment of the angular momentum of subhalos in a group. We find that this signal is visible even for objects accreted up to $z \sim 1$, i.e. 8 Gyr ago, and long after the spatial coherence of the groups has been lost due th…
We discuss a sample of over 3000 candidate RR Lyrae stars selected by various methods using Sloan Digital Sky Survey data for about 1000 deg^2 of sky. These stars probe the halo structure out to ~100 kpc from the Galactic center. Their spatial and radial velocity distributions are very inhomogeneous, with the most prominent features tracing the Sgr dwarf tidal stream. Outside the Sgr dwarf tidal stream, the spatial distribution in the 5-60 kpc range of Galactocentric radius R is well described by an R^{-3} power law.
This paper reviews the available information on the central density distribution and shape of the Milky Way's halo. At present, there is no strong evidence that the Milky Way's halo properties conflict with the predictions of cold dark matter (CDM): a primordial central power law cusp can be accommodated by the observations, and the current constraints on flattening are also consistent with the predictions of the theory. If you want to pick a fight with CDM, then the Milky Way is probably not the place to do it.
We analyse a high resolution simulation of the formation of a cluster's dark-matter halo in a $Λ$CDM cosmology (Springel et al. 2001). The resolution achieved allows us to map the phase-space structure in detail, and characterize its evolution and degree of lumpiness. Scaling down the cluster halo to a Milky-Way size halo, we probe the substructure expected in the solar neighbourhood. Here we specifically address the relevance of such substructure for direct detection experiments aimed at determining the nature of dark-matter.
