Electron-positron pair creation in supercritical electric fields limits the net charge of any static, spherical object, such as superheavy nuclei, strangelets, and Q-balls, or compact stars like neutron stars, quark stars, and black holes. For radii between $4\times10^2$ fm and $10^4$ fm the upper bound on the net charge is given by the universal relation $Z=0.71R_{fm}$, and for larger radii (measured in fm or km) $Z = 7 \times 10^{-5} R_{fm}^2 = 7 \times 10^{31} R_{km}^2$. For objects with nuclear density the relation corresponds to $Z \approx 0.7 A^{1/3}$ ($10^{8} < A < 10^{12}$) and $Z \approx 7\times10^{-5} A^{2/3}$ ($A > 10^{12}$), where $A$ is the baryon number. For some systems this universal upper bound improves existing charge limits in the literature.

We derive an effective neutrino evolution Hamiltonian and corresponding expression for neutrino spin oscillations probabilities accounting for neutrino interactions with external electric current due to neutrino charge radii and anapole moment. The results are interesting for possible applications in astrophysics.
We solve the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equation using an equation of state (EoS) calculated in holographic QCD. The aim is to use compact astrophysical objects like neutron stars as an indicator to test holographic equations of state. We first try an EoS from a dense D4/D8/\textoverline {D8} model. In this case, however, we could not find a stable compact star, a star satisfying pressure-zero condition with a radius $R$, $p(R)=0$, within a reasonable value of the radius. This means that the EoS from the D4/D8/\textoverline {D8} model may not support any stable compact stars or may support one…
We study mass-radius relations for compact stars employing an equation of state (EOS) of dense matter based on a Skyrme fluid. The zero-temperature mean-field model is based on mesonic excitations, incorporates the scale breaking of QCD, and accommodates baryons (nucleons) which arise as a solitonic configuration of mesonic fields. Stable configurations are obtained for central densities $ρ_c/ρ_n\leq 5.0$ where $ρ_n=2.575\times 10^{14}$ g/cc is the nuclear saturation density. These {\it Skyrmion Stars} are mostly fluid, with a crust which we describe by the EOS of Baym, Pethick and Sutherland.…
The first inspiral of two neutron stars observed in gravitational waves was remarkably close, allowing the kind of simultaneous gravitational wave and electromagnetic observation that had not been expected for several years. Their merger, followed by a gamma-ray burst and a kilonova, was observed across the spectral bands of electromagnetic telescopes. These GW and electromagnetic observations have led to dramatic advances in understanding short gamma-ray bursts; determining the origin of the heaviest elements; and determining the maximum mass of neutron stars. From the imprint of tides on the…
Ghost-free theories beyond the Horndeski class exhibit a partial breaking of the Vainshtein mechanism inside non-relativistic sources of finite extent. We exploit this breaking to identify new and novel astrophysical probes of these theories. Non-relativistic objects feel a gravitational force that is weaker than that predicted by general relativity. The new equation of hydrostatic equilibrium equation is derived and solved to predict the modified behaviour of stars. It is found that main-sequence stars are dimmer and cooler than their general relativity counterparts but the red giant phase is…
The equation of state provided by effective models of strongly interacting matter should comply with the restrictions imposed by current astrophysical observations of compact stars. Using the equation of state given by the (axial-)vector meson extended linear sigma model, we determine the mass-radius relation and study whether these restrictions are satisfied under the assumption that most of the star is filled with quark matter. We also compare the mass-radius sequence with those given by the equations of state of somewhat simpler models.
This M.Sc. thesis in Engineering Physics is an overview of the present theory of quark-gluon plasma (QGP) as well as an analysis of the stability criterion for possible stable cosmic QGP objects left over from the quark-hadron transition in the early Universe. It covers fundamental ideas of the formation and decay of the plasma, including the standard model, QCD, and the MIT bag model. I discuss the equation of state of a QGP and the possible signatures for a plasma created in heavy-ion collisions. Astrophysical aspects of QGP are put forward, including compact stars and the quark-hadron trans…
The equation of state provided by effective models of strongly interacting matter should comply with the restrictions imposed by current astrophysical observations on compact stars. Using the equation of state given by the (axial-)vector meson extended linear sigma model, we determine the mass-radius relation and study whether these restrictions are satisfied under the assumption that most of the star is filled with quark matter. We study the dependence of the mass-radius relation on the parameters of the model.
We present two types of models for hybrid compact stars composed of a quark core and a hadronic mantle with an abrupt first order phase transition at the interface which are in accordance with the latest astrophysical measurements of two 2 M_sun pulsars. While the first is a schematic one, the second one is based on a QCD motivated nonlocal PNJL model with density-dependent vector coupling strength. Both models support the possibility of so called twin compact stars which have the same mass but different radius and internal structure at high mass (~2 M_sun), provided they exhibit a large jump …
Aims: We present a new microscopic hadron-quark hybrid equation of state model for astrophysical applications, from which compact hybrid star configurations are constructed. These are composed of a quark core and a hadronic shell with a first-order phase transition at their interface. The resulting mass-radius relations are in accordance with the latest astrophysical constraints. Methods: The quark matter description is based on a quantum chromodynamics (QCD) motivated chiral approach with higher-order quark interactions in the Dirac scalar and vector coupling channels. For hadronic matter we …
Vacuum energy changes during cosmological phase transitions and becomes relatively important at epochs just before phase transitions. For a viable cosmology the vacuum energy just after a phase transition must be set by the critical temperature of the next phase transition, which exposes the cosmological constant problem from a different angle. Here we propose to experimentally test the properties of vacuum energy under circumstances different from our current vacuum. One promising avenue is to consider the effect of high density phases of QCD in neutron stars. Such phases have different vacuu…
A Majorana neutrino is characterized by just one flavor diagonal electromagnetic form factor: the anapole moment, that in the static limit corresponds to the axial vector charge radius <r^2_A>. As is the case for the vector charge radius of a Dirac neutrino, proving that this is a well defined physical quantity is non trivial. I will first describe briefly the origin of the long standing controversy about the physical or non physical nature of the neutrino charge radius. Then I will argue that, in contrast to Dirac neutrino electromagnetic form factors, for Majorana neutrinos cosmological and …
We study the implications of asymmetric dark matter on neutron stars. we construct a "mixed neutron star" model composed of ordinary baryons and of asymmetric dark matter baryons. We derive the general relativistic structure equations for each specie, the equation for the mass within a given radius, and the redshift as function of radius. We present one specific numerical model as an illustrative example. In this example, the mass of the dark neutron equals half that of the ordinary neutron. The main results are: a total mass of $3.74 M_{\odot}$, a total mass within the neutron-sphere equaling…
If QCD axions form a large fraction of the total mass of dark matter, then axion stars could be very abundant in galaxies. As a result, collisions with each other, and with other astrophysical bodies, can occur. We calculate the rate and analyze the consequences of three classes of collisions, those occurring between a dilute axion star and: another dilute axion star, an ordinary star, or a neutron star. In all cases we attempt to quantify the most important astrophysical uncertainties; we also pay particular attention to scenarios in which collisions lead to collapse of otherwise stable axion…
