We present the mini-proceedings of the workshop on ``Parton fragmentation in the vacuum and in the medium'' held at the European Centre for Theoretical Studies in Nuclear Physics and Related Areas (ECT*, Trento) in February 2008. The workshop gathered both theorists and experimentalists to discuss the current status of investigations of quark and gluon fragmentation into hadrons at different accelerator facilities (LEP, B-factories, JLab, HERA, RHIC, and Tevatron) as well as preparations for extension of these studies at the LHC. The main physics topics covered were: (i) light-quark and gluon fragmentation in the vacuum including theoretical (global fits analyses and MLLA) and experimental (data from e+e-, p-p, e-p collisions) aspects, (ii) strange and heavy-quark fragmentation, (iii) parton fragmentation in cold QCD matter (nuclear DIS), and (iv) medium-modified fragmentation in hot and dense QCD matter (high-energy nucleus-nucleus collisions). These mini-proceedings consist of an introduction and short summaries of the talks presented at the meeting.
Double parton fragmentation is a process in which a pair of partons produced in the short-distance process hadronize into the final state hadron. This process is important for quarkonium production when the transverse momentum is much greater than the quark mass. Resummation of logarithms of the ratio of these two scales requires the evolution equations for double parton fragmentation functions (DPFF). In this paper we complete the one-loop evaluation of the anomalous dimensions for the DPFF. We also consider possible mixing between the DPFF and single parton power suppressed gluon fragmentati…
The concept of parton fragmentation in QCD hard scattering phenomenology as well as NLO pQCD analysis of fragmentation functions are outlined. Hadroproduction of pions of a few GeV pT is discussed through the example of recent measurements at \sqrt{S_{RHIC}}=200 GeV.
The formulas directly connecting parton distribution functions (PDFs) and fragmentation functions (FFs) at the next to leading order (NLO) QCD with the same quantities at the leading order (LO) are derived. These formulas are universal, i.e. have the same form for all kinds of PDFs and FFs, differing only in the respective splitting functions entering there.
It is the central goal of our studies to describe parton fragmentation in the hot and dense medium of a quark gluon plasma (QGP). Under the assumption that the medium is not static and homogeneous, knowledge about the temporal evolution of the processes involved can be of essential importance. Therefore, parton fragmentation has been studied with a Monte-Carlo algorithm that approximates the DGLAP-evolution of fragmentation functions via a set of parton cascades. The presented work consists mainly of implementations of this kind of algorithm and the application of a simple approximation, which…
We present a new, comprehensive global analysis of parton-to-pion fragmentation functions at next-to-leading order accuracy in QCD. The obtained results are based on the latest experimental information on single-inclusive pion production in electron-positron annihilation, lepton-nucleon deep-inelastic scattering, and proton-proton collisions. An excellent description of all data sets is achieved, and the remaining uncertainties in parton-to-pion fragmentation functions are estimated based on the Hessian method. Extensive comparisons to the results from our previous global analysis are performe…
We discuss the modification of a jet fragmentation function due to medium-induced partonic energy loss in context of leading particle observables in ultrarelativistic nucleus-nucleus interactions. We also analyze the relation between in-medium softening jet fragmentation function and suppression of the jet rates due to energy loss outside the jet cone. The predicted anti-correlation between two effects allows to probe a fraction of partonic energy loss carried out of the jet cone and truly lost to the jet.
We analyze the energy scale dependence of fragmentation functions from $e^+$-$e^-$ collisions using conventional momentum measures $x_p$ and $ξ_p$ and rapidity $y$. We find that replotting fragmentation functions on a normalized rapidity variable results in a compact form precisely represented by the beta distribution, its two parameters varying slowly and simply with parton energy scale $Q$. The resulting parameterization enables extrapolation of fragmentation functions to low $Q$ in order to describe fragment distributions at low transverse momentum $p_t$ in heavy ion collisions at RHIC.
We revisit the global QCD analysis of parton-to-kaon fragmentation functions at next-to-leading order accuracy using the latest experimental information on single-inclusive kaon production in electron-positron annihilation, lepton-nucleon deep-inelastic scattering, and proton-proton collisions. An excellent description of all data sets is achieved, and the remaining uncertainties in parton-to-kaon fragmentation functions are estimated and discussed based on the Hessian method. Extensive comparisons to the results from our previous global analysis are made.
The Large Hadron Collider witnesses the highest ever production cross-section of double parton scattering processes. The production of a Z-boson along with two jets from double parton scattering provides a unique opportunity to explore the kinematics of double parton scattering processes and their dependence on the scale of the second interaction. The experimental measurement of this process is largely contaminated by Z + jets production from single parton scattering. In this paper, fragmentation properties of a jet are explored to check their sensitivity towards double parton scattering. The …
Parametrizations of fragmentation functions (FFs) from $e^+$-$e^-$ and p-p collisions are combined with a parton spectrum model in a pQCD folding integral to produce minimum-bias {\em fragment distributions}. A model of in-medium FF modification is included. Calculated fragment distributions are compared with {\em hard components} from p-p and Au-Au $p_t$ spectra. Data are well described by pQCD over a large kinematic region for a range of Au-Au centralities.
We extract the pion fragmentation functions and their uncertainties from a judicious choice of e+e- and semi-inclusive DIS data. These are used to study the error propagation in the extraction of polarized parton densities from semi-inclusive DIS asymmetries. We conclude that the uncertainties on polarized PDs have been underestimated in the past.
We consider the longitudinal polarization of Lambda and Lambda-bar produced in the current fragmentation region of polarized deep inelastic scattering. We show how the various cross sections can be used to test the underlying parton dynamics, and how one can extract information about certain parton densities which are poorly known, in particular the polarized strange density sum Delta-s(x) + Delta-s-bar(x), and about fragmentation functions which are totally unknown and which are difficult to access by other means. We show also how one can obtain information concerning the intriguing question …
The p_T-spectra for direct J/psi and psi' in hadroproduction at Tevatron energy have been calculated based on NRQCD formalism and fragmentation approximation in the collinear parton model and k_T-factorization approach. We have described the CDF data and obtained a good agreement between the predictions obtained in the parton model and k_T-factorization approach. We performed the calculations using the relevant leading order in alpha_s hard amplitudes and the equal values of the color-octet long-distance matrix elements for the both models.
In this document, we present the global QCD analysis of parton-to-kaon fragmentation functions at next-to-leading order accuracy using the latest experimental information on single-inclusive kaon production in electron-positron annihilation, lepton-nucleon deep-inelastic scattering, and proton-proton collisions. An extended analysis of this work can be found in Ref.[1].
In this review, we discuss the results on the parton-to-pion fragmentation functions obtained in a combined NLO fit to data of single-inclusive hadron production in electron-positron annihilation, proton-proton collisions, and lepton-nucleon deep-inelastic scattering. A more complete discussion can be found in Ref. [1].
Hard components of $p_t$ spectra can be identified with minimum-bias parton fragmentation in nuclear collisions. Minimum-bias fragment distributions (FDs) can be calculated by folding a power-law parton energy spectrum with parametrized fragmentation functions (FFs) derived from $e^+$-$e^-$ and p-p collisions. Alterations to FFs due to parton "energy loss" or "medium modification" in Au-Au collisions are modeled by adjusting FF parametrizations consistent with rescaling QCD splitting functions. The parton spectrum is constrained by comparison with a p-p $p_t$ spectrum hard component. The refer…
Quarkonium production at a given large p_T is dominated by parton fragmentation: a parton which is produced with transverse momentum p_T/z fragments into a quarkonium state which carries a fraction z of the parton momentum. Since parton production cross sections fall steeply with p_T, high z fragmentation is favored. However, quantum number constraints may require the emission of gluons in the fragmentation process, and this softens the z dependence of the fragmentation function. We discuss the possibility that higher- order processes may enhance the large z part of fragmentation functions and…
The hydrodynamic (hydro) model has been extensively applied to heavy ion data from the relativistic heavy ion collider (RHIC). Results are interpreted to conclude that a dense QCD medium nearly opaque to most partons, a strongly-coupled quark-gluon plasma (sQGP), is formed in more-central Au-Au collisions. The sQGP may have a very small viscosity (``perfect liquid''). However, other analysis methods provide contradictory evidence. Two-component analysis of single-particle hadron spectra reveals a spectrum hard component consistent with a parton fragment distribution described by pQCD which can…
Within the framework of generalized factorization of higher-twist contributions to semi-inclusive cross section of deeply inelastic scattering off a large nucleus, multiple parton scattering leads to an effective medium-modified fragmentation function and the corresponding medium-modified DGLAP evolution equations. We extend the study to include gluon multiple scattering and induced quark-antiquark production via gluon fusion . We numerically solve these medium-modified DGLAP (mDGLAP) evolution equations and study the scale ($Q^2$), energy ($E$), length ($L$) and jet transport parameter ($\hat…
A short review of problems with parton distribution functions in nucleons, non-polarized and polarized, is given. The main part is devoted to the transversity distribution its possible measurement and its first experimental probe via spin asymmetry in semi-inclusive DIS. It is argued that the proton transversity distribution could be successfully measured in future DIS experiments with {\it longitudinally} polarized target.
Minimum-bias fragment distributions (FDs) are calculated by folding a power-law parton energy spectrum with parametrized fragmentation functions (FFs) derived from $e^+$-$e^-$ and p-p collisions. Changes in FFs due to parton "energy loss" or "medium modification" are modeled by altering FF parametrizations consistent with rescaling QCD splitting functions. The common parton spectrum is constrained by comparison with a p-p $p_t$ spectrum hard component. In-vacuum and in-medium FDs are compared with spectrum hard components from 200 GeV Au-Au collisions for several centralities. The reference fo…
We propose a new procedure for parton-to-hadron fragmentation in proton-proton collisions. The hadronization is considered in the parton-parton center-of-mass system and hadrons are assumed to be emitted in the direction of outgoing partons in that frame and then their four-momenta are transformed to the overall center-of-mass system using relevant Lorentz transformations and appropriate distributions are constructed. For heavy hadron production the energy-momentum condition is imposed. In many cases our procedure disagrees with the commonly used rule that rapidity of produced hadron is the sa…
By expanding functions of parton fragmentation into a heavy hadron in the inverse of the heavy quark mass $m_Q$ we attempt to factorize them into perturbative- and nonperturbative parts. In our approach the nonperturbative parts can be defined as matrix elements in heavy quark effective theory, the shape of the functions is predicted by perturbative QCD. In this work we neglect effect at order of $m_Q^{-2}$ and calculate the perturbative parts at one-loop level for heavy quark- and gluon fragmentation. We compare our results from leading log approximation with experimental results from $e^+e^-…
In the literature it is assumed that the parton to hadron fragmentation function cannot be studied by using the lattice QCD method because of the sum over the (unobserved) outgoing hadronic states. However, in this paper we find that since the hadron formation from the partons can be studied by using the lattice QCD method, the parton to hadron fragmentation function can be studied by using the lattice QCD method by using the LSZ reduction formula for the partonic processes.
The hydrodynamic (hydro) model applied to data from the relativistic heavy ion collider (RHIC) suggests that a dense QCD medium opaque to partons is formed in more-central Au-Au collisions. However, two-component spectrum analysis reveals a hard component, consistent with parton fragmentation described by pQCD, which can masquerade as "radial flow." Minimum-bias angular correlations reveal that most scattered partons survive as "minijets" even in central Au-Au collisions. Such alternative methods quantitatively describe spectrum and correlation structure via pQCD calculations. RHIC collisions …
We calculate in this paper the perturbative gluon transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions (TMDPDFs) and fragmentation functions (TMDFFs) using the exponential regulator for rapidity divergences. We obtain results for both unpolarized and linearly polarized distributions through next-to-next-to leading order in strong coupling constant, and through ${\cal O}(ε^2)$ in dimensional regulator (finding discrepancy for the linearly polarized gluon TMDPDFs with a previous result in the literature). We find a nontrivial momentum conservation sum rule for the linearly polarized compo…
Quark and gluon parton dihadron fragmentation functions and their evolution are studied in the process of e+e- annihilation. We provide definitions of such dihadron fragmentation functions in terms of parton matrix elements and derive the momentum sum rules and their connection to single hadron fragmentation functions. We parameterize results from the Lund Monte Carlo model JETSET as the initial conditions for the parton dihadron fragmentation functions at the scale Q_0^2=2 GeV^2. The evolution equations for the quark and gluon fragmentation functions are solved numerically and the results at …
We report on the extraction of dihadron fragmentation functions (DiFF) from the semiinclusive production of two hadron pairs in back-to-back jets in e+e- annihilation. A nonzero asymmetry in the correlation of azimuthal orientations of opposite $π^+π^-$ pairs is related to the transverse polarization of fragmenting quarks through a significant polarized DiFF. A combined analysis of this asymmetry and the spin asymmetry in the SIDIS process $ep^{\uparrow}\to e'(π^+π^-)X$ has led to the first extraction of the u and d-flavor transversity parton distribution function in the framework of collinear…
We calculate the spin density matrix of the hadron $h$ created via quark fragmentation in the process $e^-e^+ \to q\bar q \to h + X$. In the case of $h=Λ$ the experimental data could possibly elucidate the problem of $s$-quark contribution to the spin of the $Λ$-hyperon, to be compared with the case of the proton (``spin crisis''). Generally we find that for hadrons with spin 1/2 the parton description, using only probabilities, works much better than for vector particles, since in the former case the non diagonal matrix elements of the hadron spin density matrix are suppressed by a small fact…
A model-independent analysis of collinear three-parton correlation functions for fragmentation is performed. By investigating their support properties it is shown, in particular, that the so-called partonic pole matrix elements vanish. This sheds new light on the understanding of transverse single spin asymmetries in various hard semi-inclusive reactions. Moreover, it gives additional strong evidence for the universality of transverse-momentum-dependent fragmentation functions.
The flow of information in high-energy collisions has been recently investigated by various groups: this includes the entanglement entropy of the proton becoming classical information entropy of pdfs, jet splitting affecting entropy, or the entropy distribution in hadron decays. Here we examine fragmentation functions in this context, including their entropy as probability distributions, and propose it as one convenient number to characterize progress in their extraction. We also use the Kullback-Leibler divergence to examine relations between FFs and pdfs such as that of Barone, Drago and Ma.
By combining recent HERMES data on semi-inclusive DIS $π^\pm$-production with the singlet fragmentation function $D_Σ^{π^+}$, which is well determined from $e^+e^-$ data, we are able to extract, for the first time, the flavoured fragmentation functions $D_u^{π^+}$, $D_d^{π^+}$ and $D_s^{π^+}$ without making any assumptions about favoured and unfavoured transitions. Whereas $D_u^{π^+}$ and $D_d^{π^+}$ are very well determined, the accuracy of $D_s^{π^+}$ is limited by the uncertainty in evolving $D_Σ^{π^+}$ from the $Z^0$ pole down to the SIDIS scale of a few $(GeV)^2$. We discuss how the preci…
We develop the notion of shower partons and determine their distributions in jets in the framework of the recombination model. The shower parton distributions obtained render a good fit of the fragmentation functions. We then illustrate the usefulness of the distributions in a problem where a jet is produced in the environment of thermal partons as in heavy-ion collisions. The recombination of shower and thermal partons is shown to be more important than fragmentation. Application to the study of two-particle correlation in a jet is also carried out.
We discuss charm $D^0 D^0$ meson-meson pair production in the forward rapidity region related to the LHCb experimental studies at $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV. We consider double-parton scattering mechanisms of double $c \bar c$ production and subsequent standard $cc \to D^{0}D^{0}$ scale-independent hadronization as well as new double $g$ and mixed $g c\bar c $ production mechanisms with $gg \to D^{0}D^{0}$ and $gc \to D^{0}D^{0}$ scale-dependent hadronization. The new scenario with gluon fragmentation components results also in a new single-parton scattering mechanism of $gg$ production which is also …
We present a detailed assessment of uncertainties in parton-to-pion and parton-to-kaon fragmentation functions obtained in recent global QCD analyses of single-inclusive hadron production data at next-to-leading order accuracy. We use the robust Lagrange multiplier approach for determining uncertainties to validate the applicability of the simpler but approximate Hessian method. Extensive comparisons of the results obtained within both methods are presented for the individual parton-to-pion and kaon fragmentation functions. We provide Hessian eigenvector sets of pion and kaon fragmentation fun…
We calculate cross section for production of $D$ mesons and $Λ_c$ baryons in proton-proton collisions at the LHC. The cross section for production of $c \bar c$ pairs is calculated within $k_T$-factorization approach with the Kimber-Martin-Ryskin unintegrated gluon distributions obtained on the basis of modern collinear gluon distribution functions. We show that our approach well describes the $D^0$, $D^+$ and $D_s$ experimental data. We try to understand recent ALICE and LHCb data for $Λ_c$ production with the $c \to Λ_c$ independent parton fragmentation approach. The Peterson fragmentation f…
We investigate the inclusive hadroproduction of a heavy quarkonium ($J/ψ$ or $Υ$), in association with a light-flavored jet, as a testing ground for the semi-hard regime of QCD. Our theoretical setup is the hybrid high-energy and collinear factorization, where the standard collinear approach is supplemented by the $t$-channel resummation of leading and next-to-leading energy logarithms à la BFKL. We present predictions for rapidity and azimuthal-angle differential distributions, hunting for stabilizing effects of the high-energy series under higher-order corrections. Our reaction represents an…
We revisit the calculation of perturbative quark transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions and fragmentation functions using the exponential regulator for rapidity divergences. We show that the exponential regulator provides a consistent framework for the calculation of various ingredients in transverse momentum dependent factorization. Compared to existing regulators in the literature, the exponential regulator has a couple of advantages which we explain in detail. As a result, the calculation is greatly simplified and we are able to obtain the next-to-next-to-leading order …
New polarized fragmentation functions are introduced and justified, in addition to those conventional ones assumed to be independent of the helicity of the parent parton. It is demonstrated that due to our present ignorance concerning these new parton-spin dependent leading-twist fragmentation functions, it is impossible to utilize current experiments on spin-dependent semi-inclusive deep inelastic lepton nucleon scattering to disentangle the separate polarized parton distributions.
The fragmentation of a light parton i to a jet containing a light energetic hadron h, where the momentum fraction of this hadron as well as the invariant mass of the jet is measured, is described by "fragmenting jet functions". We calculate the one-loop matching coefficients J_{ij} that relate the fragmenting jet functions G_i^h to the standard, unpolarized fragmentation functions D_j^h for quark and gluon jets. We perform this calculation using various IR regulators and show explicitly how the IR divergences cancel in the matching. We derive the relationship between the coefficients J_{ij} an…
We define and study the properties of generalized beam functions (BFs) and fragmenting jet functions (FJFs), which are fully-unintegrated parton distribution functions (PDFs) and fragmentation functions (FFs) for perturbative k_T. We calculate at one loop the coefficients for matching them onto standard PDFs and FFs, correcting previous results for the BFs in the literature. Technical subtleties when measuring transverse momentum in dimensional regularization are clarified, and this enables us to renormalize in momentum space. Generalized BFs describe the distribution in the full four-momentum…
A new form of fragmentation function is presented here, motivated by earlier non-extensive studies of jet fragmentation. We parametrized our Tsallis-like function on pion spectra and compared it to the most common fragmentation function parametrizations. It is shown that the new form is in agreement with earlier parametrizations, furthermore, its scale evolution overlap better with the experimental data.
We present a novel study on the inclusive production of a heavy quarkonium ($J/ψ$ or $Υ$), in association with a light-flavored jet, as a test field of the high-energy QCD dynamics. The large transverse momenta at which the two final-state objects are detected permits us to perform an analysis in the spirit of the variable-flavor number scheme (VFNS), in which the cross section for the hadroproduction of a light parton is convoluted with a perturbative fragmentation function that describes the transition from a light quark to a heavy hadron. The quarkonium collinear fragmentation function is b…
We calculate the functions of parton fragmentation into $^3P_J$ quarkonium at order $α_s ^2$, where the parton can be a heavy or light quark. The obtained functions explicitly satisfy the Altarelli-Parisi equation and they are divergent, behaving as $z^{-1}$ near $z=0$. However, if one choses the renormalization scale as twice of the heavy quark mass, the fragmentation functions are regular over the whole range of $z$.
We find, within the pQCD dipole model for DIS processes, a rapid increase with energy of the scale of parton momenta in the current fragmentation region in the limit $s\to \infty$ and fixed $Q^2$ . We explain the equivalence between the dispersion representation over $Q^2$ for LT pQCD zero angle amplitude of $γ^*+T\to γ^*+T$ scattering at large energies and the $k_t$ factorization, and use it to evaluate the scales of the hard processes in the current fragmentation region. We derive within the black disc (BD) regime the modified Gribov formula for the total cross-section of the DIS. We evaluat…
We present first observations of the transversity parton distribution based on an analysis of pion-pair production in deep inelastic scattering off transversely polarized targets. The extraction of transversity relies on the knowledge of dihadron fragmentation functions, which we take from electron-positron annihilation measurements. This is the first attempt to determine the transversity distribution in the framework of collinear factorization.
Exploiting the idea that the fast partons of an energetic projectile can be treated as sources of color radiation interpreted as wee partons, it is shown that the recently observed property of extended limiting fragmentation implies a scaling law for the rapidity distribution of fast partons. This leads to a picture of a self-similar process where, for fixed total rapidity Y, the sources merge with probability varying as 1/y.
Information on the Sivers distribution and the Collins fragmentation functions and their transverse momentum dependence is mainly based on fitting single spin asymmetry data from semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS). Independent information, respectively on the Sivers distribution and the Collins fragmentation, can be obtained from Drell-Yan and $e^+e^-$ annihilation processes. In the SIDIS case, the transverse momentum of the final observed hadron, which is the quantity measured, is generated both by the average transverse momentum in the distribution and in the fragmentation func…
We report on some recent developments concerning parton-to-photon fragmentation functions. We briefly summarize the main theoretical concepts on which the currently available extractions of these fragmentation functions rely: evolution and the vector meson dominance model. We present comparisons of the available sets. We argue that the single-inclusive photon production process $pp\toγX$ possesses only little sensitivity to the fragmentation contribution. Instead, the semi-inclusive process $pp\to(\text{jet}\,γ)X$, for which the photon is observed inside a fully reconstructed jet and is part o…
In analogy with parton distribution functions, also parton fragmentation functions obey matching conditions when crossing heavy-flavour thresholds. We compute these matching conditions at next-to-leading order in the strong coupling constant alpha_s in the MSbar scheme. Our results can be used for the dynamical generation of the heavy-flavour component in next-to-leading order fits to light-hadrons fragmentation functions. Furthermore, when computing perturbatively the charm fragmentation function from first principles and evolving it to higher scales, our matching conditions should be used fo…
We argue that the emission of hadrons with transverse momentum up to about 5 GeV/c in central relativistic heavy ion collisions is dominated by recombination, rather than fragmentation of partons. This mechanism provides a natural explanation for the observed constant baryon-to-meson ratio of about one and the apparent lack of a nuclear suppression of the baryon yield in this momentum range. Fragmentation becomes dominant at higher transverse momentum, but the transition point is delayed by the energy loss of fast partons in dense matter.
We review the description of inclusive single unpolarized light hadron production using fragmentation functions in the framework of the factorization theorem. We summarize the factorization of quantities into perturbatively calculable quantities and these universal fragmentation functions, and then discuss some improvements beyond the standard fixed order approach. We discuss the extraction of fragmentation functions for light charged and neutral hadrons using these theoretical tools through global fits to experimental data from reactions at various colliders, in particular from accurate e+e- …
Next-to-leading order parton fragmentation functions into light mesons are presented. They have been extracted from real and simulated $e^+e^-$ data and used to predict inclusive single particle distributions at different machines.
We propose to model hadronization of parton showers in QCD jets through a hybrid approach involving quark recombination and string fragmentation. This is achieved by allowing gluons at the end of the perturbative shower evolution to undergo a non-perturbative splitting into quark and antiquark pairs, then applying a Monte-Carlo version of instantaneous quark recombination, and finally subjecting remnant quarks (those which have not found a recombination partner) to Lund string fragmentation. When applied to parton showers from the PYTHIA Monte Carlo event generator, the final hadron spectra fr…
Modified quark fragmentation functions in deeply inelastic $eA$ collisions and their QCD evolution equations are derived for the first time in the framework of multiple parton scattering. Induced radiation gives rise to additional terms in the evolution equations and thus softens the modified quark fragmentation functions. The results in the next-leading-twist depend on both diagonal and off-diagonal twist-four parton distributions and the combination of which clearly manifests the LPM interference pattern. The predicted modification depends quadratically on the nuclear size ($A^{2/3}$). Gener…
The first order correction to the parton fragmentation functions in a thermal medium is derived in the leading logarithmic approximation in the framework of thermal field theory. The medium-modified evolution equations of the parton fragmentation functions are also derived. It is shown that all infrared divergences, both linear and logarithmic, in the real processes are canceled among themselves and by corresponding virtual corrections. The evolution of the quark number and the energy loss (or gain) induced by the thermal medium are investigated.
The dominant production mechanism for heavy quark-antiquark bound states in very high energy processes is fragmentation, the splitting of a high energy parton into a quarkonium state and other partons. We show that the fragmentation functions $D(z,μ)$ describing these processes can be calculated using perturbative QCD. We calculate the fragmentation functions for a gluon to split into S-wave quarkonium states to leading order in the QCD coupling constant. The leading logarithms of $μ/m_Q$, where $μ$ is the factorization scale and $m_Q$ is the heavy quark mass, are summed up using Altarelli-Par…
In this paper we discuss the systematics of quarkonium production at the LHC. In particular, we focus on the necessity to sum logs of the form log(Q/p_perp) and log(p_perp/m_Q). We show that the former contributions are power suppressed, while the latter, whose contribution in fragmentation is well known, also arise in the short distance (i.e., non-fragmentation) production mechanisms. Though these contributions are suppressed by powers of m_Q/p_perp, they can be enhanced by inverse powers of v, the relative velocity between heavy quarks in the quarkonium. In the limit p_perp >> m_Q short dist…
