We present recent results on the evolution of the colour-magnitude relation and of the star formation activity in galaxy clusters since z~0.8. Results are based on the ESO Distant Cluster Survey (EDisCS) - an ESO large programme aimed at the study of cluster structure and cluster galaxy evolution over a significant fraction of cosmic time - and are discussed in the framework of the current standard paradigm of structure formation.
We present the rest-frame colour-magnitude diagram for 35 early-type galaxies in the Hubble Deep Field with median redshift 0.9. Although with considerable scatter, a red sequence well-described by the passive evolution of an intrinsically old stellar population is observed. Comparison with the passively evolved colour-magnitude relation of the rich Coma cluster ($z=0.023$) indicates that around half of the early-type galaxies in the field at this redshift are as old as those in rich clusters.
We show how the second sequence seen lying above the main sequence in cluster colour magnitude diagrams results from binaries with a large range of mass ratios and not just from those with equal masses. We conclude that the presence of a densely populated second sequence, with only sparse filling in between it and the single star main sequence, does not necessarily imply that binary mass ratios are close to unity.
The results, obtained with the stellar population synthesis technique, are summarized for galactic structure and stellar population studies of our Galaxy. Emphasis is put on the analysis (extinction, disc structure, bar population) of the OGLE colour-magnitude diagram from Baade's Window.
We derive the Colour-Magnitude (CM) relation for the galaxy cluster AC118 at z=0.31 and use this relation to set constraints on the formation epoch and on the age spread of cluster galaxies in the framework of the passive evolution scenario. This work is based on observations at ESO NTT (OAC guaranteed time).
An inverse method is developed to determine the star formation history, the age-metallicity relation, and the IMF slope from a colour-magnitude diagram. The method is applied to the Hipparcos HR diagram. We found that the thin disk of our Galaxy shows a peak of stellar formation 1.6 Gyr ago. The stars close to the Sun have a solar metallicity and a mean IMF index equal to 3.2. However, the model and the evolutionary tracks do not correctly reproduce the horizontal giant branch.
The colour and luminosity distributions of red galaxies in the cluster Abell 1185 (z=0.0325) were studied down to M*+8 in the B, V and R bands. The colour-magnitude (hereafter CM) relation is linear without evidence for a significant bending down to absolute magnitudes which are seldom probed in literature (M_R=-12.5 mag). The CM relation is thin (+/-0.04 mag) and its thickness is quite independent from the magnitude. The luminosity function of red galaxies in Abell 1185 is adequately described by a Schechter function, with a characteristic magnitude and a faint end slope that also well descri…
We examined the physical origin of the colour-magnitude relation of elliptical galaxies in clusters of galaxies in the hierarchical clustering scenario by using a semi-analytic model of galaxy formation. We particularly investigate the effects of the star formation process, the supernova feedback and the UV background on the formation and evolution of elliptical galaxies. It is suggested by observation that the colour-magnitude relation reflects the metallicity-luminosity relation of galaxies, and that for reproducing the colour-magnitude relation it is important to suppress the chemical enric…
We present BVI photometry of 190 galaxies in the central region of the Fornax Cluster observed with the Michigan Curtis Schmidt Telescope. The cluster members exhibit a strong surface brightness-magnitude relation in our data: both giant and dwarf ellipticals decrease in surface brightness as luminosity decreases. However the surface brightness-magnitude relation is no longer a reliable method for determining cluster membership at surface brightnesses fainter than 22 mag/sq.arcsec. The newly discovered ultra-compact dwarf galaxies (UCDs) lie well off the normal surface brightness-magnitude rel…
We present a thorough quantitative analysis of the evolution of the colour-magnitude relation for early-type galaxies in 17 distant clusters with redshifts 0.31 < z < 1.27 using the Kodama & Arimoto (1997) evolutionary model for elliptical galaxies. The model is calibrated to reproduce the colour- magnitude relation for Coma ellipticals at z ~ 0 and gives the evolution of the slope and zero-point as a function of redshift. We find no significant differences between the colour-magnitude relations of the clusters in our sample. The slopes can be reproduced by a single model sequence in which all…
We present an analysis of optical lightcurves of Small Magellanic Cloud Be-type stars. Observations show that (1) optical excess flux is correlated with near-IR excess flux indicating a similar mechanism and (2) the lightcurves can trace out ``loops'' in a colour-magnitude diagram. A simple model for the time dependent bound-free and free-free emission produced by an outflowing circumstellar disk gives reasonable fits to the observations.
We use 16 micron, Spitzer-IRS, blue peakup photometry of 50 early-type galaxies in the Coma cluster to define the mid-infrared colour-magnitude relation. We compare with recent simple stellar population models that include the mid-infrared emission from the extended, dusty envelopes of evolved stars. The Ks-[16] colour in these models is very sensitive to the relative population of dusty Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars. We find that the passively evolving early-type galaxies define a sequence of approximately constant age (~10 Gyr) with varying metallicity. Several galaxies that lie on the…
Using chemical hydrodynamical simulations consistent with a Lambda-CDM model, we study the role played by mergers and interactions in the regulation of the star formation activity, colours and the chemical properties of galaxies in pairs. A statistical analysis of the orbital parameters in galaxy pairs (r <100 kpc/h) shows that the star formation (SF) activity correlates strongly with the relative separation and weakly with the relative velocity, indicating that close encounters (r <30 kpc/h) can increase the SF activity to levels higher than that exhibit in galaxies without a close companion.…
We present H-band imaging of 23 low redshift (z < 0.3) BL Lac objects that were previously investigated by us in the R-band. For all the observed objects, the host galaxy is well represented by an elliptical model, with average scale length R(e) = 7.2 +- 3.6 kpc and average absolute magnitude M(H) = -25.9 +- 0.6. BL Lac hosts are therefore luminous elliptical galaxies indistinguishable from those of low redshift radio galaxies and inactive ellipticals. The best-fit H-band Kormendy relation of mu(e) = 3.7 log r(e) (kpc) + 14.8 mag arcsec^-2 agrees with that obtained for normal ellipticals and r…
We present new high-quality near-infrared photometry of 10 Galactic Globular Clusters spanning a wide metallicity range (-2.12<[Fe/H]<-0.49): five clusters belong to the Halo (namely, NGC288, NGC362, NGC6752, M15 and M30) and five (namely, NGC6342, NGC6380, NGC6440, NGC6441 and NGC6624) to the Bulge. By combining J, H and K observations with optical data, we constructed Colour-Magnitude Diagrams in various planes (K,J-K), (K,V-K), (H,J-H), and (H,V-H). A set of photometric indices (colours, magnitudes and slopes) describing the location and the morphology of the Red Giant Branch (RGB) have bee…
We have determined a dust-free colour-magnitude (CM) relation for spiral galaxies, by using I-K colours in edge-on galaxies above the plane. We find that the scatter in this relation is small and approximately as large as can be explained by observational uncertainties. The slope of the near-IR CM relation is steeper for spirals than for elliptical galaxies. We suggest two possible explanations. First, the difference could be caused by vertical colour gradients in spiral galaxies. In that case these gradients should be similar for all galaxies, on average 0.15 dex in [Fe/H] per scale height, a…
(Abridged) The colour-magnitude relations of one of the most massive, high redshift clusters of galaxies known have been studied. Photometry has been measured in the V, R, I, z, F606W, F814W, J and K bands to a depth of K*+2.5 and spectroscopy confirms 27 K band selected cluster members. The V-K colours are equivalent to a rest-frame colour of ~2700A-J, and provide a very sensitive measure of star-formation activity. HST ACS imaging has been used to morphologically classify the galaxies. The cluster has a low early-type fraction compared to nearby clusters, with only 33% of the cluster members…
We present deep SofI and ISAAC near-infrared imaging data of the X-ray luminous galaxy cluster RDCS J1252.9-2927. The ISAAC data were taken at the ESO Very Large Telescope under very good seeing conditions and reach limiting Vega magnitudes of 25.6 and 24.1 in the J- and Ks-bands respectively. The image quality is 0.45 arc seconds in both passbands. We use these data to construct a colour-magnitude (C-M) diagram of galaxies that are within 20 arc seconds of the cluster center and brighter than Ks=24, which is five magnitudes fainter than the apparent magnitude of a L* galaxy in this cluster. T…
We present a new photometric catalogue of the Coma galaxy cluster in the Johnson U- and V- bands. We cover an area of 3360arcmin2 of sky, to a depth of V=20 mag in a 13 arcsec diameter aperture, and produce magnitudes for ~1400 extended objects in metric apertures from 8.8 to 26arcsec diameters. The mean internal RMS scatter in the photometry is 0.014 mag in V, and 0.026 mag in U, for V13 < 17 mag. We place new limits on the levels of scatter in the colour--magnitude relation (CMR) in the Coma cluster, and investigate how the slope and scatter of the CMR depends on galaxy morphology, luminosit…
A new method, AMORE - based on a genetic algorithm optimizer, is presented for the automated study of colour-magnitude diagrams. The method combines several stellar population synthesis tools developed in the last decade by or in collaboration with the Padova group. Our method is able to recover, within the uncertainties, the parameters -- distance, extinction, age, metallicity, index of a power-law initial mass function and the index of an exponential star formation rate -- from a reference synthetic stellar population. No a priori information is inserted to recover the parameters, which is d…
We present detailed comparisons between high quality observational colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) of open star clusters and synthetic CMDs based on MonteCarlo numerical simulations. The comparisons account for all of the main parameters which determine the shape of the CMD for a stellar population. For the four clusters studied, NGC 6819, NGC 2099 (M37), NGC 2168 (M35) and NGC 2323 (M50), we derive reddening, distance, age, binary fraction, star formation rate and indicative metallicity by comparing the locations and density of points in the observed CMDs to the simulated CMDs. We estimate t…
We perform an statistical analysis of galaxies in pairs in a Lambda-CDM scenario by using the chemical GADGET-2 of Scannapieco et al. (2005) in order to study the effects of galaxy interactions on colours and metallicities. We find that galaxy-galaxy interactions can produce a bimodal colour distribution with galaxies with significant recent star formation activity contributing mainly to blue colours. In the simulations, the colours and the fractions of recently formed stars of galaxies in pairs depend on environment more strongly than those of galaxies without a close companion, suggesting th…
Evolutionary models of elliptical galaxies are constructed by using a new population synthesis code. Model parameters are calibrated to reproduce the observed colour-magnitude (CM) relation of Coma ellipticals in $V-K$ vs. $M_{V}$ diagram. The SEDs are degenerated in stellar age and metallicity. An attempt is performed to break this degeneracy, by simulating evolution of the CM relation of elliptical galaxies, based on the two alternative interpretations; i.e., the CM relation reflects different mean stellar age or various stellar metallicity. A confrontation with the CM diagrams of E/S0 galax…
We discuss the environmental dependence of galaxy evolution based on deep panoramic imaging of two distant clusters taken with Suprime-Cam as part of the PISCES project. By combining with the SDSS data as a local counterpart for comparison, we construct a large sample of galaxies that spans wide ranges in environment, time, and stellar mass (or luminosity). We find that colours of galaxies, especially those of faint galaxies ($M_V>M_V^*+1$), change from blue to red at a break density as we go to denser regions. Based on local and global densities of galaxies, we classify three environments: fi…
We present a distance to NGC 4527, the host galaxy of the type Ia SN 1991T, measured by surface brightness fluctuations. This supernova has been labelled ``peculiar'' both on the grounds of its spectroscopic behaviour and its apparent overluminosity with respect to other supernovae. The distance modulus to NGC 4527 and thus to SN 1991T is 30.26+-0.09. This relatively short distance largely removes the discrepancy with other Ia supernovae having similar light-curve characteristics and also removes the motivation for interpreting SN 1991T as a super-Chandrasekhar explosion. However, the reddenin…
We use the $C_{2}4668$, $Fe4383$, $Hγ_A$ and $Hδ_A$ spectral absorption line indices, together with U- and V-band photometry of 101 galaxies in the Coma cluster, to investigate how mean age and metal abundance correlate with galaxy luminosity. In particular, we use the line index measurements to address the origin of the colour-magnitude relation (CMR). We find that the CMR in Coma is driven primarily by a luminosity-metallicity correlation. We additionally show evidence for a relation between age and luminosity, in the direction predicted by the semi-analytic hierarchical clustering models of…
We analyse the rest-frame (U-V) colour-magnitude relation for 2 clusters at redshift 0.7 and 0.8, drawn from the ESO Distant Cluster Survey. By comparing with the population of red galaxies in the Coma cluster, we show that the high redshift clusters exhibit a deficit of passive faint red galaxies. Our results show that the red-sequence population cannot be explained in terms of a monolithic and synchronous formation scenario. A large fraction of faint passive galaxies in clusters today has moved onto the red sequence relatively recently as a consequence of the fact that their star formation a…
We analyse 20 star cluster candidates projected mostly in the bulge direction ($|\ell|<60^\circ$). The sample contains all candidates in that sector classified by \citet{FSRcat} with quality flags denoting high probability of being star clusters. Bulge contamination in the colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) is in general important, while at lower Galactic latitudes disk stars contribute as well. Properties of the candidates are investigated with 2MASS CMDs and stellar radial density profiles (RDPs) built with field star decontaminated photometry. To uncover the nature of the structures we decont…
We present an analysis of the effects of environment on the photometric properties of galaxies in the core of the Shapley Supercluster at z=0.05, one of the most massive structures in the local universe. The Shapley Optical Survey (SOS) comprises archive WFI optical imaging of a 2.0 deg^2 region containing the rich clusters A3556, A3558 and A3562 which demonstrate a highly complex dynamical situation including ongoing cluster mergers. The B-R/R colour-magnitude relation has an intrinsic dispersion of 0.045 mag and is 0.015\pm0.005 mag redder in the highest-density regions, indicative of the re…
We present stellar photometry in the UBV passbands for the globular cluster M5 = NGC5904. The observations, short-exposured photographic plates and CCD frames, were obtained in the RC-focus of the 2m telescope of the Natl. Astron. Obs. 'Rozhen'. All stars in an annulus with radius 1 < r < 5.5 arcmin were measured. We show that the UV CMDs describe different evolutionary stages in a better manner than the 'classical' (V, B-V) diagram. We use HB stars, with known spectroscopic Teff, to check the validity of the colour zero-point. A review of all known UV-bright star candidates in M5 is made and …
We report on HST observations of six candidate old globular clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud: NGC 1754, NGC 1835, NGC 1898, NGC 1916, NGC 2005 and NGC 2019. Deep exposures with the F555W and F814W filters provide us with colour-magnitude diagrams that reach to an apparent magnitude in V of ~25, well below the main sequence turnoff. These particular clusters are involved with significantly high LMC field star densities and care was taken to subtract the field stars from the cluster colour-magnitude diagrams accurately. In two cases there is significant variable reddening across at least p…
(Abridged) Some 240 blue stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud are investigated on their fantastic irregular continuum variability. We report here two results regarding these stars. First, their optical flux excess is correlated to their near-IR flux excess, as determined from optical EROSII light curves and 2MASS measurements. Second, the relation between optical colour and magnitude is observed to be bi-valued in 40% of the cases, resulting in a "loop" when the light curve is presented in a colour-magnitude diagram. We argue that optical variability for a large fraction of the variable stars i…
A colour analysis of a carefully selected sample of over 200 Virgo cluster dEs and 8 giant ellipticals (Es) in the SDSS yields the following results: a) the nucleated dEs (dENs) follow a tight colour-magnitude relation (CMR) which does not broaden significantly at fainter (Mr > -15) magnitudes, b) the CMR of dENs smoothly transitions to the CMR of Es, but the latter changes its slope at about Mr = -20, c) the brighter dENs are consistent with ages of t > 5Gyr and a decrease of metallicity towards fainter magnitudes, but a possible additional luminosity-age relation is not ruled out, d) it is c…
We evaluated new colour-transformations for the Sloan photometry by 224 standards and used them to revise both the equations for photometric parallax estimation and metallicity calibration cited by Karaali et al. (2003). This process improves the metallicity and absolute magnitude estimations by [Fe/H]<=0.3 dex and M^{H}_{g} <= 0.1 mag respectively. There is a high correlation for metallicities and absolute magnitudes derived for two systems, UBV and Sloan, by means of the revised calibrations.
Near-infrared and optical imaging of BL Lac host galaxies is used to investigate their colour properties. We find that the R-H colour and colour gradient distributions of the BL Lac hosts are much wider than those for normal ellipticals, and many objects have very blue hosts and/or steep colour gradients. The blue colours are most likely caused by recent star formation. The lack of obvious signs of interaction may, however, require a significant time delay between the interaction event with associated star formation episodes and the onset of the nuclear activity.
We present B-band imaging of 18 low redshift (z<0.3) BL Lac objects for which their host galaxies were previously resolved in the R-band and the near-infrared H-band. For a subset of the objects, also U- and V-band imaging is presented. These data are used to investigate the blue-red-near-infrared colours and the colour gradients of the host galaxies of BL Lacs in comparison with other elliptical galaxies with and without nuclear activity. In all cases galaxies are well represented by an elliptical model, with average absolute magnitude M_B=-21.6+-0.7 and average scale length R_e=7.6+-3.2 kpc.…
We explore the origin of the colour-magnitude relation (CMR) of early type galaxies in the Virgo cluster using spectra of very high S/N ratio for six elliptical galaxies selected along the CMR. The data are analysed using a new evolutionary stellar population synthesis model to generate galaxy spectra at the resolution given by their velocity dispersions. In particular we use a new age indicator that is virtually free of the effects of metallicity. We find that the luminosity weighted mean ages of Virgo ellipticals are greater than ~8 Gyr, and show no clear trend with galaxy luminosity. We als…
Corrections to the magnitudes of high redshift objects due to intergalactic attenuation are computed using current estimates of the properties of the intergalactic medium. The results of numerical simulations are used to estimate the contributions to resonant scattering from the higher order Lyman transitions. Differences of 0.5-1 magnitude from the previous estimate of Madau (1995) are found. Intergalactic k_IGM-corrections and colours are provided for high redshift starburst galaxies and Type I and Type II QSOs for several filter systems used in current and planned deep optical and infra-red…
We present a K survey of 29 fields covering approximately 90 arcmin^2 from the Medium Deep Survey (MDS) catalogue down to a completeness magnitude of K=18.0 (limiting magnitude K=19.0). The morphology obtained by the MDS team using high resolution images from HST/WFPC2 along with our NIR observations allow a Colour-Magnitude and Colour-Colour analysis that agrees in general with spectral evolution models (Bruzual & Charlot 1998) especially if a reasonable range of metallicities for the Simple Stellar Populations used (0.2 < Z/Zsolar < 2.5) is considered. However, a significant population of sp…
We have investigated the role of photometric variability in causing the apparent age spreads observed in the colour-magnitude diagrams of OB associations. We have found that the combination of binarity, photometric uncertainty and variability on timescales of a few years is not sufficient to explain the observed spread in either of the OB associations we have studied. Such effects can account for about half the observed spread in the sigma Orionis subgroup and about 1/20 of the observed spread in Cep OB3b. This rules out variability caused by stellar rotation and rotation of structures within …
Using galaxy clusters from the ESO Distant Cluster Survey, we study how the distribution of galaxies along the colour-magnitude relation has evolved since z~0.8. While red-sequence galaxies in all these clusters are well described by an old, passively evolving population, we confirm our previous finding of a significant evolution in their luminosity distribution as a function of redshift. When compared to galaxy clusters in the local Universe, the high redshift EDisCS clusters exhibit a significant "deficit" of faint red galaxies. Combining clusters in three different redshift bins, and defini…
We present new empirical calibrations of the Red Giant Branch (RGB) Bump and Tip based on a homogeneous near-Infrared database of 24 Galactic Globular Clusters. The luminosities of the RGB Bump and Tip in the J, H and K bands and their dependence on the cluster metallicity have been studied, yielding empirical relationships. By using recent transformations between the observational and theoretical planes, we also derived similar calibrations in terms of bolometric luminosity. Direct comparison between updated theoretical models and observations show an excellent agreement. The empirical calibr…
The colour-magnitude relation (CMR) of cluster ellipticals has been widely used to constrain their star formation histories (SFHs) and to discriminate between the monolithic and merger paradigms of elliptical galaxy formation. We investigate the elliptical CMR predicted in the merger paradigm by using a LCDM hierarchical merger model. We first highlight sections of the literature which indicate that the traditional use of fixed apertures to derive colours gives a distorted view of the CMR due to the presence of colour gradients in galaxies. Fixed aperture observations make the CMR steeper and …
We present environmental dependence of the build-up of the colour-magnitude relation (CMR) at z ~ 0.8. It is well established that massive early-type galaxies exhibit a tight CMR in clusters up to at least z ~ 1. The faint end of the relation, however, has been much less explored especially at high redshifts primarily due to limited depths of the data. Some recent papers have reported a deficit of the faint red galaxies on the CMR at 0.8 < z < 1, but this has not been well confirmed yet and is still controversial. Using a deep, multi-colour, panoramic imaging data set of the distant cluster RX…
We examined effects of the ultraviolet background radiation (UVB) on the colour--magnitude relation (CMR) of elliptical galaxies in clusters of galaxies in the hierarchical clustering scenario by using a semi-analytic model of galaxy formation. In our model the UVB photoionizes gas in dark haloes and suppresses the cooling of the diffuse hot gas onto galaxy discs. By using a semi-analytic model without the effect of the UVB, Kauffmann & Charlot found that the CMR can be reproduced by strong supernova heating because such supernova feedback suppresses the chemical enrichment in galaxies especia…
We present environmental dependence of dusty star forming activity in and around the cluster RXJ1716.4+6708 at z=0.81 based on wide-field and multi-wavelength observations with Suprime-Cam on the Subaru telescope and IRC onboard the AKARI satellite. Our optical data shows that the optical colour distribution of galaxies starts to dramatically change from blue to red at the medium-density environment such as cluster outskirts, groups and filaments. By combining with infrared data, we find that 15 micron galaxies tend to have optical colours between the red sequence and the blue cloud with a tai…
Using two epochs of HST/WFPC2 images of the metal-rich globular cluster NGC 6528 we derive the proper motions of the stars and use them to separate the stars belonging to NGC 6528 from those of the Galactic bulge. The stellar sequences in theresulting colour-magnitude diagram for the cluster are significantly better determined than in previously published data. From comparison of the colour-magnitude diagram with the fiducial line for NGC 6553 from Zoccali et al. (2001) we conclude that the two globular clusters have the same age. Further, using alpha-enhanced stellar isochrones, NGC 6528 is f…
Hipparcos parallaxes fix distances to individual stars in the Hyades cluster with an accuracy of 6%. We use the Hipparcos (and Tycho-2) proper motions, which have a larger relative precision than the trigonometric parallaxes, to derive ~3 times more precise distance estimates, by assuming that all members share the same space motion. The improved parallaxes as a set are statistically consistent with the Hipparcos parallaxes. The new parallaxes confirm that the Hipparcos measurements are correlated on small angular scales, consistent with the limits specified in the Hipparcos Catalogue, though …
We have developed the techniques required to use the optimal photometry algorithm of Naylor (1998) to create colour-magnitude diagrams with well defined completeness functions. To achieve this we first demonstrate that the optimal extraction is insensitive to uncertainties in the star's measured position. We then show how to correct the optimally extracted fluxes such that they correspond to those measured in a large aperture, so aperture photometry of standard stars can be used to place the measurements on a standard system. The technique simultaneously removes the effects of a position depen…
In this paper, we examine the role that the colour-magnitude relation (CMR) can play in constraining the formation history of rich cluster galaxies. Firstly, we consider the colour evolution of galaxies after star formation ceases. We show that the scatter of the CMR places a strong constraint on the spread in age of the bulk of the stellar population. However, although the bulk of stars must be formed in a short period, continuing formation of stars in a fraction of the galaxies is not so strongly constrained. We examine a model in which star formation occurs over an extended period of time i…
We discuss the deep galaxy counts from the Hubble Deep Field (HDF) imaging survey. At faint magnitudes, the slope of the differential number-magnitude relation is flatter than 0.2 in all four HDF bandpasses. In the ultraviolet, a fluctuation analysis shows that the flattening observed below U=26 mag is not due to incompleteness and is more pronounced than in the other bands, consistent with the idea that a redshift limit has been reached in the galaxy distribution. A reddening trend of about 0.5 magnitude is observed at faint fluxes in the colour-magnitude diagram, (U-V)_{eff} vs. V. We interp…
We investigate multicolour imaging data of a complete sample of 19 low redshift (z<0.2) quasar host galaxies. The sample was imaged in four optical (BVRi) and three near-infrared bands (JHK_s). Galaxy types, structural parameters and robust host galaxy luminosities are extracted for all bands by means of two-dimensional deblending of galaxy and nucleus. For the disc dominated fraction of host galaxies (Sa and later) the optical and optical-to-NIR colours agree well with the average colours of inactive galaxies of same type. The bulge dominated galaxies (E/S0) on the other hand appear a signifi…
We present the analysis of a deep colour-magnitude diagram (CMD) of NGC 1831, a rich star cluster in the LMC. The data were obtained with HST/WFPC2 in the F555W (~V) and F814W (~I) filters, reaching m_555 ~ 25. We discuss and apply a method of correcting the CMD for sampling incompleteness and field star contamination. Efficient use of the CMD data was made by means of direct comparisons of the observed to model CMDs. The model CMDs are built by an algorithm that generates artificial stars from a single stellar population, characterized by an age, a metallicity, a distance, a reddening value, …
We exploit recent constraints on the ages and metallicities of early-type galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) to gain new insight into the physical origin of two fundamental relations obeyed by these galaxies: the colour-magnitude and the Mg2-sigmaV relations. Our sample consists of 26,003 galaxies selected from the SDSS DR2 on the basis of their concentrated light profiles, for which we have previously derived median-likelihood estimates of stellar metallicity, light-weighted age and stellar mass. Our analysis provides the most unambiguous demonstration to date of the fact that bo…
Ultra-compact dwarf galaxies (UCDs) are a new type of galaxy we have discovered in the central region of the Fornax and Virgo clusters. Unresolved in ground-based imaging, UCDs have spectra typical of old stellar systems. Ninety-two have been found in Fornax, making them the most numerous galaxy type in the cluster. Here we present multicolour (u'g'r'i'z') imaging of the central region of the Fornax Cluster using the CTIO 4m Mosaic Telescope. The colour-magnitude relation for bright UCDs is qualitatively consistent with UCDs being the stripped nuclei of dE,Ns. However at faint magnitudes, GCs …
A primary production mechanism for blue stragglers in globular clusters is thought to be collisionally-induced mergers, perhaps mediated by dynamical encounters involving binary stars. We model the formation and evolution of such blue stragglers, and produce theoretical distributions of them in the colour-magnitude diagram. We use a crude representation of cluster dynamics and detailed binary-single star encounter simulations to produce cross sections and rates for a variety of collisions. The results of the collisions are determined based on SPH simulations of realistic star models. The evolu…
The absolute K magnitudes and kinematic parameters of about 350 oxygen-rich Long-Period Variable stars are calibrated, by means of an up-to-date maximum-likelihood method, using Hipparcos parallaxes and proper motions together with radial velocities and, as additional data, periods and V-K colour indices. Four groups, differing by their kinematics and mean magnitudes, are found. For each of them, we also obtain the distributions of magnitude, period and de-reddened colour of the base population, as well as de-biased period-luminosity-colour relations and their two-dimensional projections. The …
We present GALEX near-UV (NUV) and 2MASS J band photometry for red sequence galaxies in local clusters. We define quiescent samples according to a strict emission threshold, removing galaxies with very recent star formation. We analyse the NUV-J colour-magnitude relation (CMR) and find that the intrinsic scatter is an order of magnitude larger than for the analogous optical CMR (~0.35 rather than 0.05 mag), in agreement with previous studies. Comparing the NUV-J colours with spectroscopically-derived stellar population parameters, we find a strong (> 5.5sigma) correlation with metallicity, onl…
Lutz-Kelker bias corrected absolute magnitude calibrations for the detached binary systems with main-sequence components are presented. The absolute magnitudes of the calibrator stars were derived at intrinsic colours of Johnson-Cousins and 2MASS (Two Micron All Sky Survey) photometric systems. As for the calibrator stars, 44 detached binaries were selected from the Hipparcos catalogue, which have relative observed parallax errors smaller than 15% ($σ_π/π\leq0.15$). The calibration equations which provide the corrected absolute magnitude for optical and near-infrared pass bands are valid for w…
We present a maximum likelihood method for fitting two-dimensional model distributions to stellar data in colour-magnitude space. This allows one to include (for example) binary stars in an isochronal population. The method also allows one to derive formal uncertainties for fitted parameters, and assess the likelihood that a good fit has been found. We use the method to derive an age of 38.5 +3.5/-6.5 Myrs and a true distance modulus of 7.79 +0.11/-0.05 mags from the V vs V-I diagram of NGC2547 (the uncertainties are 67 percent confidence limits, and the parameters are insensitive to the assum…
We present a new procedure for photometric parallax estimation. The data for 1236 stars provide calibrations between the absolute magnitude offset from the Hyades main-sequence and the UV-excess for different (B-V)o colour-index intervals, i.e.: (0.3 0.4), (0.4 0.5), (0.5 0.6), (0.6 0.7), (0.7 0.8), (0.8 0.9), (0.9 1.0), and (1.0 1.1). The mean difference between the original and estimated absolute magnitudes and the corresponding standard deviation are rather small, +0.0002 and +/-0.0613 mag. The procedure has been adapted to the Sloan photometry by means of colour equations and applied to a …
