We report the discovery of a single-lined spectroscopic binary with an Ultra Cool Dwarf (UCD) primary with a spectral type between M8 and L0.5. This system was discovered during the course of an ongoing survey to monitor L dwarfs for radial velocity variations and is the first known small separation (a<1 AU) spectroscopic binary among dwarfs at the M/L transition. Based on radial-velocity measurements with a typical precision of 300 m/s we estimate the orbital parameters of this system to be P=246.73+/-0.49 d, a1 sin(i)=0.159+/-0.003 AU, M2 sin(i)=0.2062 (M1+M2)^(2/3)+/-0.0034 M_{\sun}. Assuming a primary mass of M1=0.08M_{\sun} (based on spectral type), we estimate the secondary minimum mass to be M2 sin(i)=0.054 M_{\sun}. With future photometric, spectroscopic, and interferometric observations it may be possible to determine the dynamical masses of both components directly, making this system one of the best characterized UCD binaries known.
We will introduce a new method to derive the orbital elements of the spectroscopic binary stars. Fitting the adopted radial velocity curves on the measured experimental data, the corresponding radial acceleration data are obtained. The orbital parameters are estimated by the nonlinear least squares of the radial velocity-acceleration curves. This method is implemented for the three double line spectroscopic binary systems RZ CAS, CC Cas and V1130 Tau. Numerical calculations show that the result are in good agreement with the those obtained by others using the method of Lehmann-Filhés.
Using measured radial velocity data of nine double lined spectroscopic binary systems NSV 223, AB And, V2082 Cyg, HS Her, V918 Her, BV Dra, BW Dra, V2357 Oph, and YZ Cas, we find corresponding orbital and spectroscopic elements via the method introduced by Karami & Mohebi (2007a) and Karami & Teimoorinia (2007). Our numerical results are in good agreement with those obtained by others using more traditional methods.

We announce the discovery of a new early-type, double-lined spectroscopic binary in the LH 54 OB association in the LMC. We present a V light curve and radial velocities. We investigate the possible configurations of the system, concluding that it probably contains the most massive star measured at the present, with a mass (in solar units) of the order of 100, while its companion has approximately 50.
We report on the direct detection of a close companion to HD 160934, a young active star, SB1 spectroscopic binary, and suggested member of the AB Doradus moving group. High angular resolution at the Calar Alto 2.2m telescope was achieved by means of the Lucky Imaging technique, allowing direct imaging close to the diffraction limit in the SDSS z' band. Our results are combined with pre-discovery HST archive data, own UBVRI broadband photometry, published JHK magnitudes, and available radial velocity measurements to constrain the physical properties of the HD 160934 close binary. We suggest th…
It is still a matter of debate if the group of lambda Bootis stars is homogeneously defined. A widely discussed working hypothesis formulates that two apparent solar abundant stars of an undetected spectroscopic binary system mimic a single metal-weak spectrum preventing any reliable analysis of the group characteristics. Is the proposed spectroscopic binary model able to explain the observed abundance pattern and photometric metallicity indices for the group members? What is the percentage of undetected spectroscopic binary systems? We have used the newest available stellar atmospheres to syn…
High-precision radial-velocity techniques, which enabled the detection of extrasolar planets are now sensitive to relativistic effects in the data of spectroscopic binary stars (SBs). We show how these effects can be used to derive the absolute masses of the components of eclipsing single-lined SBs and double-lined SBs from Doppler measurements alone. High-precision stellar spectroscopy can thus substantially increase the number of measured stellar masses, thereby improving the mass-radius and mass-luminosity calibrations.
The Ninth Catalogue of Spectroscopic Binary Orbits (http://sb9.astro.ulb.ac.be) continues the series of compilations of spectroscopic orbits carried out over the past 35 years by Batten and collaborators. As of 2004 May 1st, the new Catalogue holds orbits for 2,386 systems. Some essential differences between this catalogue and its predecessors are outlined and three straightforward applications are presented: (1) Completeness assessment: period distribution of SB1s and SB2s; (2) Shortest periods across the H-R diagram; (3) Period-eccentricity relation.
We report detection of the low-mass secondary in the spectroscopic binary Haro 1-14c in the Ophiuchus star forming region. The secondary/primary mass ratio is $0.310\pm 0.014$. With an estimated photometric primary mass of 1.2 $M_{\odot}$, the secondary mass is $\sim 0.4 M_{\odot}$ and the projected semi-major axis is $\sim 1.5$ AU. The system is well-suited for astrometric mapping of its orbit with the current generation of ground-based IR interferometers. This could yield precision values of the system's component masses and distance.
Using the 1-m telescope at Ritter Observatory, we took 36 observations of zeta^2 Coronae Borealis with a fiber-fed echelle spectrograph. From these observations, zeta^2 CrB was found to be a triple system and a new spectroscopic orbit was calculated. This orbit has two periods, a 1.72357 day period for the inner binary composed of zeta^2 CrB A & B and a 251 day period for the outer binary composed of zeta^2 CrB AB & C. The inner binary is a double-lined spectroscopic binary composed of two B7 V stars. The inner binary's center of mass (zeta^2 CrB AB) describes a long-period single-lined variat…
We performed a spectroscopic study of the SB2 Mercury-Manganese star alpha And. Our measurements of the secondary's radial velocities result in improved orbital elements. The secondary shows abundances typical of the metallic-line stars: a Ca deficiency, small overabundances of the iron-peak elements, and 1.0 dex overabundances of Sr and Ba.
The spectroscopic orbit of a high proper motion visual binary system BD +30 2129 component A is determined from 22 CORAVEL-type radial velocity measurements. A period of P = 32.79 days and a moderate eccentricity e = 0.29 are obtained. The visual system AB has a projected spatial separation ~580 AU. The system's barycenter velocity V0 = -35.95 km/s and the transverse velocity Vt = 132.2 km/s. The Galactic spatial velocity components U = +76.7 km/s, V = 110.4 km/s, W = -26.6 km/s, and a large ultraviolet excess give evidence that the star belongs to thick disk population of the Galaxy.
The spectroscopic orbit of a circumpolar high-proper-motion visual binary BD +82 565 A component is determined from 57 CORAVEL radial velocity measurements. A short period P = 12.69 d and a moderate eccentricity e = 0.30 are obtained. The visual system AB has a projected spatial separation ~830 AU. The system's barycenter velocity V_0 = -86.7 km/s, the transverse velocity V_t = 118.7 km/s and the Galactic spatial velocity components U = -62.6 km/s, V = -84.1 km/s and W = -84.2 km/s give evidence that it belongs to the thick disk of the Galaxy.
We present the results of a spectroscopic campaign revealing that the non-thermal radio emitter Cyg OB2 #8A is an O6 + O5.5 binary system. We propose the very first orbital solution indicating a period of about 21.9 days. The system appears to be eccentric (0.24 +/- 0.04) and is likely seen under a rather low inclination angle. The mass ratio of the components is close to unity. The impact of the binarity of this star in the framework of our understanding of non-thermal radio emission from early-type stars is briefly discussed.
We have analyzed nearly eight years of MACHO optical photometry of the supersoft X-ray binary RX J0513.9-6951 and derived a revised orbital period and ephemeris. Previously published velocities are reinterpreted using the new ephemeris. We show that the spectroscopic characteristics of the system depend strongly on whether the system is in a high or low optical state. We also discuss the properties of the source's high/low optical states and its long-term light curve. Evidence for a 83.3-day periodicity in the photometry is presented.
We find the star HD 34700 to be a double-lined spectroscopic binary. We also identify it as a weak-line T Tauri object The spectra of both components are very similar and both show the Li I feature at 6708 Å. Strong arguments in favour of the binary nature of the star as opposed to other possibilities are offered. It is very likely that the companion is also a T Tauri star of similar mass. A projected rotational velocity, $v$sin$i$, of 25 and 23 km/s$^{-1}$ has been estimated for the blue and red components. We present a list of the lines identified and the radial velocities of the two compone…
We report estimates of the masses of the component stars in the pre-main-sequence spectroscopic binary UZ Tau E. These results come from the combination of our measurements of the mass ratio, M2/M1=0.28 +/-0.01, obtained using high resolution H-band spectroscopy, with the total mass of the system, (1.31 +/-0.08)(D/140pc) M_sun, derived from millimeter observations of the circumbinary disk (Simon et al. 2000). The masses of the primary and secondary are (1.016 +/-0.065)(D/140pc) M_sun and (0.294 +/-0.027)(D/140pc) M_sun, respectively. Using the orbital parameters determined from our six epochs …
The three objects have been identified as members of the recently recognized class of Gamma Doradus stars, which exhibit multi-periodic photometric variations that are thought to arise from non-radial pulsation. The particular objects treated here also prove to be spectroscopic binaries, for which we provide reliable orbits. The radial velocities exhibit unusually large residuals, in which some of the photometric periodicities can be traced. Some of the same periodicities are also demonstrated by the observed variations in the line profiles, which are quantified here simply in terms of the lin…
From radial velocities derived from optical spectroscopic observations performed at CTIO, Chile, and CASLEO, Argentina, we have discovered that LSS 1135 is a single--lined O-type binary system with an orbital period of 2.7532 days. We present an analysis of the orbital elements of this system based on radial velocities of the He absorption lines. We classify the spectrum of LSS 1135 as O6.5V((f)). We also present spectral classifications and radial velocities for other seven OB stars in the region of Bochum 7, an OB association to which LSS 1135 belongs. Our data indicate a distance of 5.0 kpc…
We present radial-velocity measurements obtained using high- and intermediate-resolution spectroscopic observations of the classical T Tauri star UZ Tau East obtained from 1994 to 1996. We also provide measurements of H$α$ equivalent widths and optical veiling. Combining our radial-velocity data with those recently reported by Prato et al. (2002), we improve the orbital elements for this spectroscopic binary. The orbital period is 18.979$\pm$0.007 days and the eccentricity is e=0.14. We find variability in the H$_α$ emission and veiling, signposts of accretion, but at periastron passage the ac…
Field star BD+20 307 is the dustiest known main sequence star, based on the fraction of its bolometric luminosity, 4%, that is emitted at infrared wavelengths. The particles that carry this large IR luminosity are unusually warm, comparable to the temperature of the zodiacal dust in the solar system, and their existence is likely to be a consequence of a fairly recent collision of large objects such as planets or planetary embryos. Thus, the age of BD+20 307 is potentially of interest in constraining the era of terrestrial planet formation. The present project was initiated with an attempt to …
We analysed archival spectroscopic data of AM CVn taken with the William Herschel Telescope in 1996. In the literature two orbital periods for AM CVn are proposed. A clear S-wave in the HeI 4471, 4387 and 4143 Ålines is revealed when the spectra are folded on the 1029 s period. No signature of this S-wave is seen when folded on 1051 s. Doppler tomography of the line profiles shows a clear signature of the hotspot. Using this we can constrain the value of K_2 to lie between 210 and 280 km/s. Our work confirms the binary nature of AM CVn beyond any doubt, establishes 1028.73 s as the true orbita…
The bright star delta Sco has been considered a typical B0-type object for many years. Spectra of the star published prior to 1990 showed no evidence of emission, but only of short-term line profile variations attributed to nonradial pulsations. Speckle interferometric observations show that delta Sco is a binary system with a highly-eccentric orbit and a period of 10.6 years. Weak emission in the H-alpha line was detected in its spectrum for the first time during a periastron passage in 1990. Shortly before the next periastron passage in the summer of 2000, the binary entered a strong H-alpha…
We present a new homogeneous sample of 32 spectroscopic binary orbits in the young (~ 150 Myr) main-sequence open cluster M35. The distribution of orbital eccentricity vs. orbital period (e-log(P)) displays a distinct transition from eccentric to circular orbits at an orbital period of ~ 10 days. The transition is due to tidal circularization of the closest binaries. The population of binary orbits in M35 provide a significantly improved constraint on the rate of tidal circularization at an age of 150 Myr. We propose a new and more robust diagnostic of the degree of tidal circularization in a …
We have obtained multi-epoch, high-resolution spectroscopy of 218 candidate low-mass stars and brown dwarfs in the young clusters around sigma Ori and lambda Ori. We find that 196 targets are cluster members based on their radial velocity, the equivalent width of their NaI 8200 lines and the spectral type from their TiO band strength. We have identified 11 new binary stars among the cluster members based on their variable radial velocity and an additional binary from the variation in its line width and shape. The sample covers the magnitude range Ic=14-18.9 (mass =~ 0.55-0.03 Msun), but all of…
We have used spectra taken between 1992 and 1997 to derive the spectroscopic orbit of the eclipsing double-lined spectroscopic binary HD 197770. This binary has a period of 99.69 +/- 0.02 days and K amplitudes of 31.2 +/- 0.8 and 47.1 +/- 0.4 km s^{-1} for components A & B, respectively. The msin^{3}i values for A & B are 2.9 and 1.9, respectively, and are close to the actual masses due to the eclipsing nature of this binary. Both components of HD 197770 have spectral types near B2 III. This means both components are undermassive by about a factor of five and, thus, evolved stars. Additional e…
This paper describes a high-resolution, infrared spectroscopic survey of young, low-mass stars designed to identify and characterize pre-main-sequence spectroscopic binaries. This is the first large infrared radial velocity survey of very young stars to date. The frequency and mass ratio distribution of the closest, low-mass binaries bear directly on models of stellar, brown dwarf, and planetary mass companion formation. Furthermore, spectroscopic binaries can provide mass ratios and ultimately masses, independent of assumptions, needed to calibrate models of young star evolution. I present th…
BAT99-129 in the LMC is one among a handful of extra-galactic eclipsing Wolf-Rayet binaries known. We present blue, medium-resolution, phase-dependent NTT-EMMI spectra of this system that allow us to separate the spectra of the two components of the binary and to obtain a reliable orbital solution for both stars. We assign an O5V spectral type to the companion, and WN3(h)a to the Wolf-Rayet component. We discuss the spectroscopic characteristics of the system: luminosity ratio, radii, rotation velocities. We find a possible oversynchronous rotation velocity for the O star. Surprisingly, the ex…
We present a large multi-epoch high resolution spectroscopic investigation for the search of binary candidates in the Galactic Globular Cluster (GGC) M4. The aim of our work is the identification of the binary candidates, and the determination of the binary fraction and of the binary radial distribution. We present a large multi-epoch high resolution spectroscopic investigation for the search of binary candidates in the Galactic Globular Cluster (GGC) M4. The aim of our work is the identification of the binary candidates, and the determination of the binary fraction and of the binary radial di…
We present an analysis of optical and near infrared spectra of the eclipsing symbiotic system FN Sgr. In particular, we have determined for the first time spectroscopic orbits based of the radial velocity curves for both components. A set of blue absorption lines resembling an A-F type star is present in all our spectra. They seem to be associated with the hot component but the best orbital fitting corresponds to a larger eccentricity. We have also studied spectral changes and photometric variations in function of both the hot component activity and the orbital motion.
We present the results of a high-resolution spectroscopic monitoring program of the eclipsing pre-main-sequence star KH 15D that reveal it to be a single-line spectroscopic binary. We find that the best-fit Keplerian model has a period P = 48.38 days, which is nearly identical to the photometric period. Thus, we find the best explanation for the periodic dimming of KH 15D is that the binary motion carries the currently visible star alternately above and below the edge of an obscuring cloud. The data are consistent with the models involving an inclined circumstellar disk, as recently proposed b…
We present a phase resolved spectral analysis of the X-ray binary 4U0115+63 based upon Beppo-Sax satellite observations. Three strong absorption lines have been detected at all phases. We interpreted them as a cyclotron resonant scattering. Existence of the fourth cyclotron line has been confirmed at some phases. The cyclotron feature is found to be strongly dependent on the phase of the source, while the continuum part of the spectrum depends on the phase relatively weakly. The cyclotron lines turned out to be very nonequidistant. The second line is almost always deeper then the first one. We…
A spectroscopic analysis of the DAB white dwarf PG 1115+166 is presented. The observed hydrogen and helium line profiles are shown to be incompatible with model spectra calculated under the assumption of homogeneous or stratified chemical compositions. In contrast, an excellent fit to the optical spectrum of PG 1115+166 can be achieved if the object is interpreted as an unresolved double degenerate composed of a hydrogen-line DA star and a helium-line DB star. The atmospheric parameters obtained from the best fit are Teff=22,090 K and log g=8.12 for the DA star, Teff=16,210 K and log g=8.19 fo…
We carried out a radial velocity survey for spectroscopic binaries in the low density globular cluster NGC5053. Our sample contains a total of 77 cluster member giant and subgiant stars with visual magnitudes of 14.5-18.6. Of these 77 stars, 66 stars have on average of 3-4 measurements with a total of 236 velocities. A typical velocity error per measurement is about 3 km/s. The stars in our sample are spatially distributed from the cluster center out to 10 arcminutes in radius (4.5 core radii). Among these 66 stars with multiple velocity measurements, we discovered 6 spectroscopic binary candi…
We present simultaneous spectroscopic observations taken during four observing runs (1996 to 1999) of H_alpha, H_beta, H_epsilon, Ca II H & K, and Ca II IRT lines of the chromospherically active binary BF Lyn. Both components have strong emission in the H_epsilon, Ca II H & K and Ca II IRT lines and a strong filling-in of the H_alpha and H_beta lines have been observed after the application of the spectral subtraction technique. We have found that the hot component (K2 V) is always the most active of the system. The different activity indicators of the hot and cool components show anticorrelat…
We present the discovery of CO fundamental ro-vibrational emission from the classical T Tauri spectroscopic binary DQ Tau. The high-resolution infrared echelle spectra reveal emission lines from both the v=1 and v=2 vibrational levels with line widths of roughly 70 km/s. The average CO excitation temperature is approximately 1200 K. We model the spectra as arising from gas in Keplerian rotation about the center-of-mass of the binary. The disk model requires gas with an average surface density of 5 x 10-4 g cm-2 that extends outward to 0.5 +/- 0.1 AU and inward to at least 0.1 AU from the cente…
We report the identification, in an Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) spectrum, of a hot white dwarf companion to the 3rd magnitude late-B star Theta Hya (HR3665, HD79469). This is the second B star + white dwarf binary to be conclusively identified; Vennes, Berghofer and Christian (1997), and Burleigh and Barstow (1998) had previously reported the spectroscopic discovery of a hot white dwarf companion to the B5V star y Pup (HR2875). Since these two degenerate stars must have evolved from main sequence progenitors more massive than their B star companions, they can be used to place observati…
We have observed a large sample of spectroscopic binary stars in the Hyades Cluster, using high resolution infrared spectroscopy to detect low mass companions. We combine our double-lined infrared measurements with well constrained orbital parameters from visible light single-lined observations to derive dynamical mass ratios. Using these results, along with photometry and theoretical mass-luminosity relationships, we estimate the masses of the individual components in our binaries. In this paper we present double-lined solutions for 25 binaries in our sample, with mass ratios from ~0.1-0.8. T…
We present the analysis of an extensive set of high resolution spectroscopic observations of HD93161, a visual binary with a separation of 2 arcsec. HD93161 A is a spectroscopic binary, with both components clearly detected throughout the orbit. The primary star is most probably of spectral type O8V, while the secondary is likely an O9V. We obtain the first orbital solution for this system, characterized by a period of 8.566\pm0.004 days. The minimum masses of the primary and secondary stars are 22.2\pm0.6 M_sol and 17.0\pm0.4 M_sol respectively. These values are quite large, suggesting a high…
We have recalculated the orbits of 3 binary systems, members of the open cluster Trumpler 16 in the Carina region. We have added new observations to those available in the literature. Also, we have also tried to find the orbital periods for two suspected binary systems in the same cluster. We have improved considerably the precision of some of the orbital parameters.
The Mercury-Manganese star Phi Her is a well known spectroscopic binary that has been the subject of a recent study by Zavala et al. (2006), in which they resolved the companion using long-baseline interferometry. The total mass of the binary is now fairly well established, but the combination of the spectroscopy with the astrometry has not resulted in individual masses consistent with the spectral types of the components. The motion of the center of light of Phi Her was clearly detected by the Hipparcos satellite. Here we make use of the Hipparcos intermediate data (`abscissa residuals') and …
Photometric and spectroscopic results for the contact binary GSC 01387-00475 (ASAS 083128+1953.1) are presented. The existence of this binary with the orbital period of P = 0.2178 d strengthens the argument that the cut-off of the period distribution for contact binaries - until now defined by CC Comae - is very sharp. The only case of a still shorter period is known in a globular cluster where more compact contact configurations are in fact expected. While the spectroscopic orbit of GSC 01387-00475 is well defined, the low orbital inclination of the binary and the presence of a spectroscopic …
The B[e]/K binary system MWC 623 was reinvestigated using new spectroscopic observations. The absorption lines of the K and the B star do not exhibit any significant radial velocity variations over a time interval of 14 years. The spectral classification using a recent echelle spectrum yielded spectral types of K2II-Ib and B4III. The luminosity class of the K star gives an estimate of the distance towards MWC 623 of 2.4(+1.4/-0.9) kpc. This is consistent with the kinematic distance of 2.0(+0.6/-0.3) kpc. The masses derived from the locations of the binary components in the H-R diagram are 7+-1…
In paper 167 of his serie published in The Observatory, Griffin presented the spectroscopic orbit of HD 112914, a late main sequence star. He also noticed that this star, also known as HIP 63406, was one of the few for which the DMSA/O Annex of the Hipparcos Catalogue derived an orbit prior to any spectroscopic one. Albeit in agreement with each others, the astrometric orbit was however determined with rather large uncertainties. Here, we have reanalysed the Hipparcos Intermediate Astrometric Data (IAD) using Griffin'spectroscopic orbit to obtain a much more precise astrometric orbit. Several …
PPl 15 is the first object to have been confirmed as a brown dwarf by the lithium test (in 1995), though its inferred mass was very close to the substellar limit. It is a member of the Pleiades open cluster. Its position in a cluster color-magnitude diagram suggested that it might be binary, and preliminary indications that it is a double-lined spectroscopic binary were reported by us in 1997. Here we report on the results of a consecutive week of Keck HIRES observations of this system, which yield its orbit. It has a period of about 5.8 days, and an eccentricity of 0.4+/-0.05. The rotation of…
We present a study based on more than 2500 uvby-measurements collected on HD 172189, a new eclipsing binary system with a Delta Sct-type pulsating component that belongs to the open cluster IC 4756. The great interest of this object lies in that three important characteristics coexist: cluster membership, binarity and pulsation. Its binarity and the Delta Sct-type pulsations of one component were detected in the course of several Stromgren photometric campaigns. The frequency analysis of all the uvby out-of-eclipse data reveals a clear frequency of 19.5974 c/d as well as the existence of other…
We present an updated spectroscopic orbit and a new visual orbit for the double-lined spectroscopic binary σ^2 Coronae Borealis based on radial velocity measurements at the Oak Ridge Observatory in Harvard, Massachusetts and interferometric visibility measurements at the CHARA Array on Mount Wilson. σ^2 CrB is composed of two Sun-like stars of roughly equal mass in a circularized orbit with a period of 1.14 days. The long baselines of the CHARA Array have allowed us to resolve the visual orbit for this pair, the shortest period binary yet resolved interferometrically, enabling us to determine …
We report our discovery of an extremely rare, low mass, quadruple-lined spectroscopic binary BD-22 5866 (=NLTT 53279, integrated spectral type = M0 V), found during an ongoing search for the youngest M dwarfs in the solar neighborhood. From the cross-correlation function, we are able to measure relative flux levels, estimate the spectral types of the components, and set upper limits on the orbital periods and separations. The resulting system is hierarchical composed of K7 + K7 binary and a M1 + M2 binary with semi-major axes of asini_{A}<=0.06 AU and asini_{B}<=0.30 AU. A subsequent search of…
A single-epoch low resolution GHRS spectrum of the eclipsing binary Epsilon Aurigae was obtained while the secondary was orbiting towards eclipse by the primary. The detected emission line profiles have the appearance of double- peaked emission with a stronger red component at a radial velocity of +108 km/s, and a weaker blue emission bump at ca. -92 km/s. We compare these observational results with known orbital properties of the epsilon Aur binary system, and propose that the emission originates at the inner radius of the disk surrounding the enigmatic secondary. We interpret the kinematic d…
We report the discovery of a new low-mass spectroscopic (SB2) stellar binary system in the star-forming region of Upper Scorpius. This object, UScoCTIO5, was discovered by Ardila (2000), who assigned it a spectral class of M4. A KeckI HIRES spectrum revealed it to be double-lined, and we then carried out a program at several observatories to determine its orbit. The orbital period is 34 days, and the eccentricity is nearly 0.3. The importance of such a discovery is that it can be used to help calibrate evolutionary models at low masses and young ages. This is one of the outstanding problems in…
We report spectroscopic observations of the star HIP 50796, previously considered (but later rejected) as a candidate member of the TW Hya association. Our measurements reveal it to be a single-lined binary with an orbital period of 570 days and an eccentricity of e = 0.61. The astrometric signature of this orbit was previously detected by the HIPPARCOS satellite in the form of curvature in the proper motion components, although the period was unknown at the time. By combining our radial velocity measurements with the HIPPARCOS intermediate data (abscissae residuals) we are able to derive the …
We have examined the radial velocity data for stars spectroscopically observed by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) more than once to investigate the incidence of spectroscopic binaries, and to evaluate the accuracy of the SDSS stellar radial velocities. We find agreement between the fraction of stars with significant velocity variations and the expected fraction of binary stars in the halo and thick disk populations. The observations produce a list of 675 possible new spectroscopic binary stars and orbits for eight of them.
We subjected 106 new high-resolution spectra of the double-lined spectroscopic close binary epsilon Lupi, obtained in a time-span of 17 days from two different observatories, to a detailed study of orbital and intrinsic variations. We derived accurate values of the orbital parameters. We refined the sidereal orbital period to 4.55970 days and the eccentricity to e=0.277. By adding old radial velocities, we discovered the presence of apsidal motion with a period of the rotation of apses of about 430 years. Such a value agrees with theoretical expectations. Additional data is needed to confirm a…
In this article we present a first discovery of non radial pulsations in both components of the Herbig Ae spectroscopic binary star RS Cha. The binary was monitored in quasi-continuous observations during 14 observing nights (Jan 2006) at the 1m Mt John (New Zealand) telescope with the Hercules high-resolution echelle spectrograph. The cumulated exposure time on the star was 44 hrs, corresponding to 255 individual high-resolution echelle spectra with $R = 45000$. Least square deconvolved spectra (LSD) were obtained for each spectrum representing the effective photospheric absorption profile mo…
We report the discovery, in an Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) short wavelength spectrum, of an unresolved hot white dwarf companion to the 5th-magnitude B5Vp star HR2875. This is the first time that a non-interacting white dwarf$+$ B star binary has been discovered; previously, the the earliest type star known with a white dwarf companion was Sirius (A1V). Since the white dwarf must have evolved from a main sequence progenitor with a mass greater than that of a B5V star ($\geq$6.0M$_\odot$), this places a lower limit on the maximum mass for white dwarf progenitors, with important implicat…
The massive interacting binary RY Scuti is an important representative of an active mass-transferring system that is changing before our eyes and which may be an example of the formation of a Wolf-Rayet star through tidal stripping. Utilizing new and previously published spectra, we present examples of how a number of illustrative absorption and emission features vary during the binary orbit. We identify spectral features associated with each component, calculate a new, double-lined spectroscopic binary orbit, and find masses of 7.1 +/- 1.2 M_sun for the bright supergiant and 30.0 +/- 2.1 M_su…
The metal-poor post-AGB star HD 46703 is shown to be a single-line spectroscopic binary with a period of 600 days, a high velocity of -94 km/s, and an orbital eccentricity of 0.3. Light curve studies show that it also pulsates with a period of 29 days. High-resolution, high signal-to-noise spectra were used for a new abundance study. The atmospheric model determined is T(eff) = 6250 K, log(g) = 1.0, V(t) = 3.0 km/s, and a metal abundance of [M/H] = -1.5. A low carbon abundance and lack of s-process element enhancement indicate that the star has not experienced third dredge-up on the AGB. The s…
We present the results of an optical spectroscopic study of the massive Wolf-Rayet binary WR137. These data cover the dust-formation maximum in 1997. Combining all available measurements of radial velocities, we derive, for the first time, a spectroscopic orbit with period 13.05 +/- 0.18 years. The resulting masses, adopting i=67degrees, are M(O)= 20 +/- 2 Mo and M(WR)= 4.4+/- 1.5 Mo. These appear, respectively, around normal and on the low side for the given spectral types. Analysis of the intense multi-site spectroscopic monitoring in 1999 shows that the CIII5696 and CIV5802/12 lines have th…
We present optical interferometric observations of two double-lined spectroscopic binaries, HD 6118 and HD 27483, taken with the Palomar Testbed Interferometer (PTI) in the K band. HD 6118 is one of the most eccentric spectroscopic binaries and HD 27483 a spectroscopic binary in the Hyades open cluster. The data collected with PTI in 2001-2002 allow us to determine astrometric orbits and when combined with the radial velocity measurements derive all physical parameters of the systems. The masses of the components are 2.65 +/- 0.27 M_Sun and 2.36 +/- 0.24 M_Sun for HD 6118 and 1.38 +/- 0.13 M_S…
We report on the spectroscopic monitoring of GCIRS16SW, an Ofpe/WN9 star and LBV candidate in the central parsec of the Galaxy. SINFONI observations show strong daily spectroscopic changes in the K band. Radial velocities are derived from the HeI 2.112 um line complex and vary regularly with a period of 19.45 days, indicating that the star is most likely an eclipsing binary. Under various assumptions, we are able to derive a mass of ~ 50 Msun for each component.
