The projection factor is a key quantity for the interferometric Baade-Wesselink (hereafter IBW) and surface-brightness (hereafter SB) methods of determining the distance of Cepheids. Indeed, it allows a consistent combination of angular and linear diameters of the star. We aim to determine consistent projection factors that include the dynamical structure of the Cepheids' atmosphere. Methods. Hydrodynamical models of delta Cep and l Car have been used to validate a spectroscopic method of determining the projection factor. This method, based on the amplitude of the radial velocity curve, is applied to eight stars observed with the HARPS spectrometer. The projection factor is divided into three sub-concepts : (1) a geometrical effect, (2) the velocity gradient within the atmosphere, and (3) the relative motion of the "optical" pulsating photosphere compared to the corresponding mass elements (hereafter fo-g). Both, (1) and (3) are deduced from geometrical and hydrodynamical models, respectively, while (2) is derived directly from observations. The Fe I 4896.439 A line is found to be the best one to use in the context of IBW and SB methods. A coherent and consistent period-projection factor relation (hereafter Pp relation) is derived for this specific spectral line: p = [0.064 +- 0.020] log P + [1.376 +- 0.023]. This procedure is then extended to derive dynamic projection factors for any spectral line of any Cepheid. This Pp relation is an important tool for removing bias in the calibration of the period-luminosity relation of Cepheids. Moreover, it reveals a new physical quantity fo-g to investigate in the near future.
The distance modulus of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) is the first step on the determination of the cosmic distance scale. In this paper it is obtained from a new calibration of the classical Cepheid Period-Luminosity (PL) relation. Our new calibration is obtained by applying the LM method -- a parametric method designed to obtain luminosity calibrations from astrometric information -- to the Hipparcos data for Classical Cepheids. The resulting distance modulus is $18.35^{m}\pm 0.13$.
Extragalactic Cepheids are the basic rungs of the cosmic distance scale. They are excellent standard candles, although their luminosities and corresponding distance estimates can be affected by the particular properties of the host galaxy. Therefore, the accurate analysis of the Cepheid population in other galaxies, and notably in the Andromeda Galaxy (M31), is crucial to obtaining reliable distance determinations. We obtained accurate photometry (in B and V passbands) of 416 Cepheids in M31 over a five year campaign within a survey aimed at the detection of eclipsing binaries. The resulting C…
New Hubble Space Telescope observations of Cepheid variable stars in the nearby galaxy M96 give a distance to the host galaxy group, Leo-I, of 11.6+/-0.8 Mpc. This value, used in conjunction with several reliable secondary indicators of relative distance, constrains the distances to more remote galaxy clusters, and yields a value of the Hubble constant (Ho=69+/-8 km/s/Mpc) that is independent of the velocity of the Leo-I group itself.
The recent introduction of high resolution/large spectral range spectrographs provided the opportunity to investigate in detail the chemical composition of classical Cepheids. This paper is focussed on new abundance determinations for iron and 6 light metals (O, Na, Mg, Al, Si, Ca) in 30 Galactic Cepheids. We also give a new estimate of the Galactic radial abundance gradient. The stellar effective temperatures have been determined using the method of line depth ratios, while the surface gravity and the microturbulent velocity v$_{t}$ by imposing the ionization balance between Fe I and Fe II an…
We have selected a sample of Galactic Cepheids for which accurate estimates of radii, distances, and photometric parameters are available. The comparison between their pulsation masses, based on new Period-Mass-Radius (PMR) relations, and their evolutionary masses, based on both optical and NIR Color-Magnitude (CM) diagrams, suggests that pulsation masses are on average of the order of 10% smaller than the evolutionary masses. Current pulsation masses show, at fixed radius, a strongly reduced dispersion when compared with values published in literature. The increased precision in the pulsation …
We describe techniques to characterise the light-curves of regular variable stars by applying principal component analysis (PCA) to a training set of high quality data, and to fit the resulting light-curve templates to sparse and noisy photometry to obtain parameters such as periods, mean magnitudes etc. The PCA approach allows us to efficiently represent the multi-band light-curve shapes of each variable, and hence quantitatively describe the average behaviour of the sample as a smoothly varying function of period, and also the range of variation around this average. In this paper we focus pa…
Galactic Cepheids in the vicinity of the Sun have a residual line-of-sight velocity, or gamma-velocity, which shows a systematic blueshift of about 2 km/s compared to an axisymmetric rotation model of the Milky Way. This term is either related to the space motion of the star and, consequently, to the kinematic structure of our Galaxy, or it is the result of the dynamical structure of the Cepheids' atmosphere. We aim to show that these residual gamma-velocities are an intrinsic property of Cepheids. We observed nine galactic Cepheids with the HARPS spectroscope, focusing specifically on 17 spec…
The measurement of precise galaxy distances by Cepheid observations out to the distance of the Virgo cluster is important for the determination of the Hubble constant ($H_0$). The Virgo cluster is thereby often used as an important stepping stone. The first HST measurement of the distance of a Virgo galaxy (M100) using Cepheid variables provided a value for $H_0=80(\pm 17)$ km/s/Mpc (Freedman et al. 1994). This measurement was preceeded by a ground based study of the Virgo spiral NGC4571 (Pierce et al. 1994) formally providing $H_0= 87\pm7$ km/s/Mpc. These determinations rely on the accuracy w…
We present a measurement of the Hubble Constant based on Cepheid distances to 27 galaxies within 20 Mpc. We take the Cepheid data from published measurements by the Hubble Telescope Key Project on the Distance Scale (H0KP). We calibrate the Cepheid Period-Luminosity (PL) relation with data from over 700 Cepheids in the LMC obtained by the OGLE collaboration; we assume an LMC distance modulus of 18.50 mag (d=50.1 kpc). Using this PL calibration we obtain new distances to the H0KP galaxies. We correct the redshifts of these galaxies for peculiar velocities using two distinct velocity field model…
We have determined the distance to M33 using single epoch I-band observations of Cepheids based on HST/WFPC2 images of five fields in M33. Combining the HST I-band photometry and the periods determined from the ground-based observations (DIRECT) for 21 Cepheids with log P>0.8 in the sample of 32 Cepheids, we derive a distance modulus of (m-M)_0=24.52+/-0.14(random)+/-0.13(systematic) for an adopted total reddening of M33, E(B-V)=0.20+/-0.04 (E(V-I)=0.27+/-0.05) given by Freedmand et al.(2001), the reddening to the LMC, E(B-V)=0.10, and the distance to the LMC, (m-M)_0=18.50. If the total redde…
The ratio of pulsation to radial velocity (the projection factor) is currently limiting the accuracy of the interferometric Baade-Wesselink method. This work aims at establishing a link between the line asymmetry evolution over the Cepheids' pulsation cycles and their projection factor, with the final objective to improve the accuracy of the Baade-Wesselink method for distance determinations. We present HARPS high spectral resolution observations of nine galactic Cepheids having a good period sampling. We fit spectral line profiles by an asymmetric bi-Gaussian to derive radial velocity, Full-W…
We have measured near-infrared magnitudes in the J and K bands for 56 Cepheid variables in the Local Group galaxy NGC 6822 with well-determined periods and optical light curves in the V and I bands. Using the template light curve approach of Soszynski, Gieren and Pietrzynski, accurate mean magnitudes were obtained from these data which allowed us to determine with unprecedented accuracy the distance to NGC 6822 from a multi-wavelength period-luminosity solution in the VIJK bands. From our data, we obtain a distance to NGC 6822 of (m-M)_{0} = 23.312 +- 0.021 (random error) mag, with an addition…
In this paper we present a modified version of the CORS method based on a new calibration of the Surface Brightness function in the Stromgren photometric system. The method has been tested by means of synthetic light and radial velocity curves derived from nonlinear pulsation models. Detailed simulations have been performed to take into account the quality of real observed curves as well as possible shifts between photometric and radial velocity data. The method has been then applied to a sample of Galactic Cepheids with Stromgren photometry and radial velocity data to derive the radii and a n…
We report observations of two nearby Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) for which observations of Cepheid variables in the host galaxies have been obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope: SN 1994ae in NGC 3370 and SN 1998aq in NGC 3982. For NCG 3370, we used the Advanced Camera for Surveys to observe 64 Cepheids that yield a distance of 29 Mpc, the farthest direct measurement of Cepheids. We have measured emission lines from H II regions in both host galaxies which provide metallicity-dependent corrections to their period-luminosity relations. These two SNe Ia double the sample of ``ideal'' luminosi…
In this paper, we make a comprehensive determination of the Hubble constant $H_0$ by using two parameters - the B-V color and the rate of decline $Δm_{15}$ - to simultaneously standardize the luminosities of all nearby Cepheid-calibrated type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) and those of a larger, more distant sample of 29 SNe Ia. Each group is treated in as similar a manner as possible in order to avoid systematic effects. A simultaneous $χ^2$ minimization yields a standardized absolute luminosity of the Cepheid-calibrated supernovae as well as the Hubble constant obtained from the more distant sample.…
Recent HST determinations of the expansion's rate of the Universe (the Hubble constant, H_0) assumed that the Cepheid Period-Luminosity relation at V and I are independent of metallicity (Freedman, et al., 1996, Saha et al., 1996, Tanvir et al., 1995). The three groups obtain different vales for H_0. We note that most of this discrepancy stems from the asumption (by both groups) that the Period-Luminosity relation is independent of metallicity. We come to this conclusion as a result of our study of the Period-Luminosity relation of 481 Cepheids with 3 millions two colour measurements in the La…
In a recent paper describing HST observations of Cepheids in the spiral galaxy NGC 4258, Newman et al. (2001) report that the revised calibrations and methods for the Key Project on the Extragalactic Distance Scale yield that the true distance modulus of this galaxy is 29.40+-0.09 mag, corresponding to a metric distance of 7.6+-0.3 Mpc. This Cepheid distance, which holds for 18.50 mag as the true distance modulus of the LMC, is not significantly larger than 7.2+-0.5 Mpc, the value determined by Herrnstein et al. (1999) from purely geometric considerations on the orbital motions of water maser …
We examine the suggestion that half of the HST Key Project- and Sandage/Saha-observed galaxies have had their distances systematically underestimated, by 0.1-0.3 mag in the distance modulus, due to the underappreciated influence of stellar profile blending on the WFC chips. The signature of such an effect would be a systematic trend in (i) the Type Ia supernovae corrected peak luminosity and (ii) the Tully-Fisher residuals, with increasing calibrator distance, and (iii) a differential offset between PC and WFC distance moduli, within the same galaxy. The absence of a trend would be expected if…
A general review is given of the calibration of the Cepheid distance scale, with particular reference to its use in the determination of H0. Emphasis is placed on the advantage of using a galactic calibration of the Cepheid scale, rather than relying on an adopted distance to the LMC. It is then possible to use LMC data to test for possible metallicity effects on this scale.
(ABRIDGED) We have applied the near-IR Barnes-Evans realization of the Baade-Wesselink method as calibrated by Fouque & Gieren (1997) to five metal-poor Cepheids with periods between 13 and 17 days in the Small Magellanic Cloud as well as to a sample of 34 Galactic Cepheids to determine the effect of metallicity on the period-luminosity (P-L) relation. For ten of the Galactic Cepheids we present new accurate and well sampled radial-velocity curves. The Baade-Wesselink analysis provides accurate individual distances and luminosities to the Cepheids in the two samples, allowing us to constrain d…
We present recent results concerning distance determinations based on the two most popular primary distance indicators, namely classical Cepheids and RR Lyrae. We discuss the problems affecting the Cepheid distance scale, and in particular the dependence of fundamental Period-Luminosity (PL) and Period-Luminosity-Color (PLC) relations on the metal content. The key advantages in using the K-band PL relation of RR Lyrae stars when compared with the M_V vs [Fe/H] are also presented.
We present a compilation of Cepheid distance moduli and data for four secondary distance indicators that employ stars in the old stellar populations: the planetary nebula luminosity function (PNLF), the globular cluster luminosity function (GCLF), the tip of the red giant branch (TRGB), and the surface brightness fluctuation (SBF) method. The database includes all data published as of July 15, 1999. The main strength of this compilation resides in all data being on a consistent and homogeneous system: all Cepheid distances are derived using the same calibration of the period-luminosity relatio…
We present observations of the galactic cepheids eta Aql and zeta Gem. Our observations are able to resolve the diameter changes associated with pulsation. This allows us to determine the distance to the Cepheids independent of photometric observations. We determine a distance to eta Aql of 320 +/- 32 pc, and a distance to zeta Gem of 362 +/- 38 pc. These observations allow us to calibrate surface brightness relations for use in extra-galactic distance determination. They also provide a measurement of the mean diameter of these Cepheids, which is useful in constructing structural models of thi…
We present results based on a Baade-Wesselink analysis of Cepheids in the Small Magellanic Cloud. The Baade-Wesselink analysis provides individual luminosities for these metal-poor Cepheids which combined with recent Baade-Wesselink results from Gieren et al. (1998) on solar metallicity Galactic Cepheids constrain the metallicity effect on the zero-point of the Cepheid P-L relation. A preliminary analysis leads to an effect of dMv / d[Fe/H]= -0.45 +-0.15, metal-rich Cepheids being brighter, in good agreement with several recent independent determinations. An effect of this magnitude reduces si…
In a previous paper (Maoz et al. 1999), we reported a Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Cepheid distance to the galaxy NGC 4258 obtained using the calibrations and methods then standard for the Key Project on the Extragalactic Distance Scale. Here, we reevaluate the Cepheid distance using the revised Key Project procedures described in Freedman et al. (2001). These revisions alter the zero points and slopes of the Cepheid Period-Luminosity (P-L) relations derived at the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), the calibration of the HST WFPC2 camera, and the treatment of metallicity differences. We also provi…
We report on the discovery of a Cepheid population in the Sculptor Group spiral galaxy NGC 247 for the first time. On the basis of wide-field images collected in photometric surveys in V and I bands which were conducted with three different telescopes and cameras, 23 Cepheid variables were discovered with periods ranging from 17 to 131 days. We have constructed the period-luminosity relations from these data and obtain distance moduli to NGC 247 of 28.20 $\pm$ 0.05 mag (internal error) in V, 28.04 $\pm$ 0.06 mag in I, and 27.80 $\pm$ 0.09 mag in the reddening-independent Wesenheit index. From …
The distance modulus of a galaxy determined from Cepheids differs from its distance modulus determined from Tully-Fisher by an amount that is proportional to the galaxy's line width, W: Delta mu ~ (-1.73\pm 0.46)log(W). While a miscalibration of the slope of Tully-Fisher could in principle produce this effect, we argue that such a miscalibration is very unlikely. The other possible explanation is that the inferred Cepheid luminosity is correlated with the rotation speed v (and hence W) of its parent galaxy: L ~ v^{0.7}. This proportionality is superposed on the well-established relation betwee…
We present new theoretical Period-Radius (PR) relations for first overtone Galactic Cepheids. Current predictions are based on several sequences of nonlinear, convective pulsation models at solar chemical composition (Y=0.28, Z=0.02) and stellar masses ranging from 3.0 to 5.5 Mo. The comparison between predicted and empirical radii of four short-period Galactic Cepheids suggests that QZ Nor and EV Sct are pulsating in the fundamental mode, whereas Polaris and SZ Tau pulsate in the first overtone. This finding supports the mode identifications that rely on the comparison between direct and Peri…
We present the comparison between theoretical and empirical PL relations in V and I bands for the Large Magellanic Cloud. We found that, within the current intrinsic dispersions, theoretical predictions are in remarkable agreement with observational data. We also discuss the PLC relations in (V,B-V) and (V,V-I) as well as the dependence of distance determinations on uncertainties in colors, in reddening corrections and in metal content.
We have obtained mosaic images of NGC 3109 in the V and I bands on 74 nights, spanning approximately one year. From these data, we have conducted an extensive search for Cepheid variables over the entire field of the galaxy, resulting in the discovery of 113 variables with periods ranging from 3.4 to 31.4 days. In this sample, 76 Cepheids, including many long-period variables, were not known before. For the previously known 45 Cepheids in this galaxy, our data proved that reported periods were wrong for 14 objects; for nearly all other previously known Cepheid variables we were able to signifi…
A catalog of Cepheid variables is used to probe the kinematics of the Galactic disk. Radial velocities are measured for eight distant Cepheids toward l = 300; these new Cepheids provide a particularly good constraint on the distance to the Galactic center, R_0. We model the disk with both an axisymmetric rotation curve and one with a weak elliptical component, and find evidence for an ellipticity of 0.043 +/- 0.016 near the Sun. Using these models, we derive R_0 = 7.66 +/- 0.32 kpc and v_circ = 237 +/- 12 km/s. The distance to the Galactic center agrees well with recent determinations from the…
Recent developments in the determination of H0 are reviewed in the context of the 3 following questions: 1) What is required to measure an accurate value of H0? Given the wide range of H0 values quoted in the current literature, is there any evidence that the situation has changed very much at all in the last couple of decades? And 3), is a measurement of H0 accurate to 10% feasible with current observational tools? Recent results on the extragalactic distance scale are extremely encouraging. A large number of independent methods (including the latest type Ia supernova calibration by Sandage e…
A sample of 37 Galactic, 10 LMC and 6 SMC cepheids is compiled for which individual metallicity estimates exist and BVIK photometry in almost all cases. The Galactic cepheids all have an individual distance estimate available. For the MC objects different sources of photometry are combined to obtain improved periods and mean magnitudes. A multi-parameter Period-Luminosity relation is fitted to the data which also solves for the distance to the LMC and SMC. When all three galaxies are considered, without metallicity effect, a significant quadratic term in log P is found, as previously observed …
Rotation curves for four spiral galaxies with recently determined Cepheid-based distances are reconsidered in terms of modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND). For two of the objects, NGC 2403 and NGC 7331, the rotation curves predicted by MOND are compatible with the observed curves when these galaxies are taken to be at the Cepheid distance. For NGC 3198, the largest distance for which reasonable agreement is obtained is 10% smaller than the Cepheid-based distance; i.e., MOND clearly prefers a smaller distance. This conclusion is unaltered when new near-infrared photometry of NGC 3198 is taken as…
We report BV(RI)c CCD photometric data for a group of seven Cepheid variables in the young, rich cluster NGC 1866 in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The photometry was obtained as part of a program to determine accurate distances to these Cepheids by means of the infrared surface brightness technique, and to improve the LMC Cepheid database for constructing Cepheid PL and PLC relations. Using the new data together with data from the literature, we have determined improved periods for all variables. For five fundamental mode pulsators, the light curves are now of excellent quality and will lead to …
We have measured the distance to the Local Group dwarf irregular galaxy IC 10 from near-infrared $JHK$ observations of Cepheids. The reddening-corrected distance modulus is $24.57\pm0.21$ mag or $0.82\pm 0.08$ Mpc. This distance lies at the short end of the range of previous estimates, and is significantly more accurate than all prior determinations. At this distance, IC 10 is comparable in total mass to the Small Magellanic Cloud, but has much more vigorous star formation.
We present the first application of mid-infrared Period-Luminosity relations to the determination of a Cepheid distance beyond the Magellanic Clouds. Using archival IRAC imaging data on NGC 6822 from Spitzer we were able to measure single-epoch magnitudes for sixteen long-period (10 to 100-day) Cepheids at 3.6um, fourteen at 4.5um, ten at 5.8um and four at 8.0um. The measured slopes and the observed scatter both conform to the relations previously measured for the Large Magellanic Cloud Cepheids, and fitting to those relations gives apparent distance moduli of mod{3.6} = 23.57 +/- 0.06, mod{4.…
The aim of this paper is to investigate the metallicity dependence of the $PL$-relation in $V$ and $K$ based on a sample of 68 Galactic Cepheids with individual Baade-Wesselink distances (some of the stars also have an HST-based parallax) and individually determined metallicities from high-resolution spectroscopy. Literature values of the $V$-band, $K$-band and radial velocity data have been collected for a sample of 68 classical cepheids that have their metallicity determined in the literature from high-resolution spectroscopy. Based on a $(V-K)$ surface-brightness relation and a projection f…
We present iron abundance measurements, based on high resolution spectroscopy, and accurate distance determinations, based on near infrared photometry, for 34 Galactic Cepheids. The new data are used to constrain the Galactic iron abundance gradient in the outer disk, namely from 10 to 14 kpc. We confirm the flattening of the gradient toward the outer disk. In this region we also found an increase in the metallicity dispersion. Current data do not support the occurrence of a jump in the metallicity gradient for Galactocentric distances of the order of 10-12 kpc.
The extragalactic distance scale relies heavily on Cepheids. However, it has become clear from observations and pulsation models that the slope and zero point of their P-L relations differ from galaxy to galaxy. This makes the determination of Cepheid distances complex and calls for an independent test of their differences. The test is provided by RR Lyrae star distances of 24 galaxies which calibrate the tip of the red-giant branch (TRGB; M_I = -4.05), which in turn confirms the adopted Cepheids distances on our 2006 distance scale in 18 cases to within 0.1 mag on average. Relative SN Ia and …
We have used the infrared surface brightness technique to obtain a new absolute calibration of the Cepheid PL relation in optical and near-infrared bands from improved data on Galactic stars. The infrared surface brightness distances to the Galactic variables are consistent with direct interferometric Cepheid distance measurements, and with the PL calibration coming from Hipparcos parallaxes of nearby Cepheids, but are more accurate than these determinations. We find that in all bands, the Galactic Cepheid PL relation appears to be slightly, but significantly steeper than the corresponding rel…
We review the use of Cepheids as distance indicators with particular emphasis on the methods which have been applied to HST observations of Cepheids. The calibration of the period-luminosity relations is examined in detail and we identify possible problems with the existing calibrations. New V- and I-band period luminosity relations are presented based on a sample of 53 Cepheids in the LMC with photometry drawn from the literature. These revised PL relations result in a systematic decrease of approx 0.1 magnitudes in distance moduli derived using the standard method of extinction correction. H…
This is an investigation of the period-luminosity relation of classical Cepheids in samples of different metallicity. It is based on 481 Cepheids in the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds from the blue and red filter CCD observations (most similar to V_J & R_J) of the French EROS microlensing project. The data-set is complete and provides an excellent basis for a differential analysis between LMC and SMC. In comparison to previous studies of effects on the PL-relation, the EROS data-set offers extremely well-sampled light curves and well-filled instability strips. This allows reliable separatio…
We extended to the R and I bands the light curve coverage for 8 Cepheids already studied in B and V by Capaccioli et al [AJ, 103, 1151 (1992)]. Sixteen additional Cepheid candidates have been identified and preliminary periods are proposed. The new Cepheids allow the period-luminosity relation to be extended one magnitude fainter. Apparent B, V, R, and I distance moduli have been calculated. Combining the data at different wavelengths, and assuming a true distance modulus of 18.50 mag for the LMC, we obtain for NGC 3109 a true distance modulus $(m-M)_0=25.67\pm0.16$, corresponding to $1.36\pm0…
(abridged) Recent investigations aimed at estimating the distance to the young LMC cluster NGC1866 have made use of Red Clump stars in the surrounding LMC field, together with empirical and theoretical Main-Sequence fitting methods, and have found significantly different distances for the field and the cluster, the latter being closer by in distance modulus by Δ(DM) \sim 0.20 mag. In this paper we (re-)consider the Cepheid star population of NGC1866, to try to shed some light on this discrepancy. By combining various extensive photometric datasets in BVI and single-epoch 2MASS JHK photometry, …
We present a differential study of 500 Magellanic Cepheids with 3 million measurements obtained as a by-product of the EROS microlensing survey. The data-set is unbiased and provides an excellent basis for a differential analysis between LMC and SMC. We investigate the pulsational properties of the Cepheids as a function of metallicity and the constraints they give to stellar pulsation, stellar evolution theory and opacities. Moreover, our empirical analysis shows a small metallicity effect on the period-luminosity relation which has a significant implication to recent distance estimates based…
Cepheids play a key role in astronomy as standard candles for measuring intergalactic distances. Their distance is usually inferred from the Period-Luminosity relationship, calibrated using the semi-empirical Baade-Wesselink method. Using this method, the distance is known to a multiplicative factor, called the projection factor. Presently, this factor is computed using numerical models - it has hitherto never been measured directly. Based on our new interferometric measurements obtained with the CHARA Array and the already published parallax, we present a geometrical measurement of the projec…
Cepheids are the primary distance indicators for extragalactic astronomy and therefore are of very high astrophysical interest. Unfortunately, they are rare stars, situated very far from Earth.Though they are supergiants, their typical angular diameter is only a few milliarcseconds, making them very challenging targets even for long-baseline interferometers. We report observations that were obtained in the K prime band (2-2.3 microns), on the Cepheid Zeta Geminorum with the FLUOR beam combiner, installed at the IOTA interferometer. The mean uniform disk angular diameter was measured to be 1.64…
Based on spectra obtained at the Anglo-Australian Observatory, we present a discussion of the metallicity of the galactic disc derived using Cepheids at galactocentric distances 4-6 kpc. Our new results together with previous gradient determination (Paper I) show that the overall abundance distribution within the galactocentric distances 4-11 kpc cannot by represented by a single gradient value. The distribution is more likely bimodal: it is flatter in the solar neighbourhood with a small gradient, and steepens towards the galactic center. The steepening begins at a distance of about 6.6 kpc.
We have compared the results of Bayesian statistical calculations and linear-bisector calculations for obtaining Cepheid distances and radii by the infrared surface brightness method. We analyzed a set of 38 Cepheids using a Bayesian Markov Chain Monte Carlo method that had been recently studied with a linear-bisector method. The distances obtained by the two techniques agree to 1.5 \pm 0.6% with the Bayesian distances being larger. The radii agree to 1.1% \pm 0.7% with the Bayesian determinations again being larger. We interpret this result as demonstrating that the two methods yield the same…
The planetary nebula luminosity function (PNLF) technique for determining distances to galaxies now has been applied to 34 galaxies, including 6 in the Virgo cluster and 3 in the Fornax cluster. Of these, 16 galaxies are late-type or spirals and presumably contain Cepheid variables useful for verifying the PNLF method. For 7 of these galaxies, Cepheid distances exist; the PNLF distances agree with the Cepheid distances within the dispersion of 8% and within a zero-point offset of 1%. In addition, 3 small groups were studied (NGC 1023, Leo I, and Coma I) where both spiral and elliptical distanc…
We have conducted an extensive wide-field imaging survey for Cepheid variables in the Local Group irregular galaxy WLM. From data obtained on 101 nights, we have discovered 60 Cepheids which include 14 of the 15 Cepheid variables previously detected by Sandage and Carlson. Down to a period of 3 days, our Cepheid survey in WLM should be practically complete. Importantly, we have found for the first time a long-period Cepheid (P=54.2 days) in this galaxy, alleviating the puzzle that WLM with its many blue, massive stars does not contain Cepheids with periods longer than about 10 days. Our data d…
We have obtained deep images in the near-infrared J and K filters for several fields in the Local Group galaxy WLM. We report intensity mean magnitudes for 31 Cepheids located in these fields which we previously discovered in a wide-field optical imaging survey of WLM. The data define tight period-luminosity relations in both near-infrared bands which we use to derive the total reddening of the Cepheids in WLM and the true distance modulus of the galaxy from a multiwavelength analysis of the reddened distance moduli in the VIJK bands. From this, we obtain the values E(B-V) = 0.082 $\pm$ 0.02, …
A measurement of the distance to Virgo Cluster by a direct method along with a realistic error analysis is important for a reliable determination of the value of Hubble Constant. Cepheid variables in the face-on spiral M100 in the Virgo Cluster were observed with the Hubble Space Telescope in 1994 under the HST Key Project on the Extragalactic Distance Scale. This work is a reanalysis of the HST data following our study of the Galactic Cepheids (in an accompanying communication). The periods of the Cepheids are determined using two independent methods and the reasons for varying estimates are …
We present Period-Luminosity-Color and Period-Luminosity relations of classical Cepheids constructed for about 1280 Cepheids from the LMC and 2140 from the SMC. High quality BVI observations (120-360 epochs in the I-band and 15-40 in the BV-bands) were collected during the OGLE-II microlensing experiment. The I-band diagrams of the LMC show very small scatter, σ=0.074 mag, indicating that Cepheid variables can potentially be a very good standard candle. We compare relations of fundamental mode Cepheids from the LMC and SMC and we do not find significant differences of slopes of the Period-Lumi…
We discuss a new distance to NGC 5128 (Centaurus A) based on Cepheid variables observed with the Hubble Space Telescope. Twelve F555W (V) and six F814W (I) epochs of cosmic-ray-split Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 observations were obtained. A total of 56 bona-fide Cepheids were discovered, with periods ranging from 5 to ~50 days; five of these are likely Population II Cepheids of the W Virginis class, associated with the bulge or halo of NGC 5128. Based on the period and V and I-band luminosities of a sub-sample of 42 classical (Pop I) Cepheids, and adopting a Large Magellanic Cloud distance m…
We present the first part of a new catalog of variable stars (OIII-CVS) compiled from the data collected in the course of the third phase of the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE-III). In this paper we describe the catalog of 3361 classical Cepheids detected in the ~40 square degrees area in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The sample consists of 1848 fundamental-mode (F), 1228 first-overtone (1O), 14 second-overtone (2O), 61 double-mode F/1O, 203 double-mode 1O/2O, 2 double-mode 1O/3O, and 5 triple-mode classical Cepheids. This sample is supplemented by the list of 23 ultra-low amplit…
The theoretical evaluations of the Red Giant Branch Tip (TRGB) luminosity presented in Salaris & Cassisi (1997) are extended to higher metallicities, and compared with analogous independent results recently published. The comparison between our ZAHB and TRGB distance scales for galactic globular clusters presented in Salaris & Cassisi (1997) is now supplemented with a comparison with the HIPPARCOS distance scale set by local subdwarfs with accurate parallax determinations. The overall agreement between ZAHB and HIPPARCOS distances is quite good. The ZAHB and TRGB distances to resolved galaxies…
We have used the Advanced Camera for Surveys aboard the Hubble Space Telescope to obtain F435W, F555W and F814W single-epoch images of six fields in the spiral galaxy NGC 300. Taking advantage of the superb spatial resolution of these images, we have tested the effect that blending of the Cepheid variables studied from the ground with close stellar neighbors, unresolved on the ground-based images, has on the distance determination to NGC 300. Out of the 16 Cepheids included in this study, only three are significantly affected by nearby stellar objects. After correcting the ground-based magnitu…
Using the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) 37 long-period Cepheid variables have been discovered in the Fornax Cluster spiral galaxy NGC 1365. The resulting V and I period-luminosity relations yield a true distance modulus of 31.35 +/- 0.07 mag, which corresponds to a distance of 18.6 +/- 0.6 Mpc. This measurement provides several routes for estimating the Hubble Constant. (1) Assuming this distance for the Fornax Cluster as a whole yields a local Hubble Constant of 70 +/-18_{random} [+/-7]_{systematic} km/s/Mpc. (2) Nine Cepheid-based distances to groups of galaxies out to and including the Forna…
