We provide numerical evidence for composite fermion pairing in quantum Hall bilayer systems at filling $ν=1/2 + 1/2$ for intermediate spacing between the layers. We identify the phase as $p_x + i p_y$ pairing, and construct high accuracy trial wavefunctions to describe the groundstate on the sphere. For large distances between the layers, and for finite systems, a competing "Hund's rule" state, or composite fermion liquid, prevails for certain system sizes. We argue that for larger systems, the pairing phase will persist to larger layer spacing.
In bilayer quantum Hall systems at filling fractions near nu=1/2+1/2, as the spacing d between the layers is continuously decreased, intra-layer correlations must be replaced by inter-layer correlations, and the composite fermion (CF) Fermi seas at large d must eventually be replaced by a composite boson (CB) condensate or "111 state" at small d. We propose a scenario where CBs and CFs coexist in two interpenetrating fluids in the transition. Trial wavefunctions describing these mixed CB-CF states compare very favorably with exact diagonalization results. A Chern-Simons transport theory is con…
An improved composite-boson theory of quantum Hall ferromagnets is formulated both for the monolayer and bilayer systems. In this scheme the field operator describes solely the physical degrees of freedom representing the deviation from the ground state. Skyrmions are charged excitations confined to the lowest Landau level. By evaluating the excitation energy of one skyrmion in the interlayer-coherent phase it is shown that the bilayer QH state becomes stabler as the interlayer density difference becomes larger.
We construct a family of BCS paired composite fermion wavefunctions that generalize, but remain in the same topological phase as, the Moore-Read Pfaffian state for the half-filled Landau level. It is shown that for a wide range of experimentally relevant inter-electron interactions the groundstate can be very accurately represented in this form.
We present a field theory of Jain's composite fermion model as generalised to the bilayer quantum Hall systems. We define operators which create composite fermions and write the Hamiltonian exactly in terms of these operators. This is seen to be a complexified version of the familiar Chern Simons theory. In the mean-field approximation, the composite fermions feel a modified effective magnetic field exactly as happens in usual Chern Simons theories, and plateaus are predicted at the same values of filling factors as Lopez and Fradkin and Halperin . But unlike normal Chern Simons theories, we o…
We derive the effective Hamiltonian for the composite fermion in double-layer quantum Hall systems with inter-layer tunneling at total Landau-level filling factor $ν=1/m$, where $m$ is an integer. We find that the ground state is the triplet p-wave BCS pairing state of the composite fermions. At $ν=1/2$, the ground state of the system evolves from the Halperin $(3,3,1)$-state toward the Pfaffian-state with increasing the tunneling amplitude. On the other hand, at $ν=1$, the pairing state is uniquely determined independent of tunneling amplitude.
Via the application of parallel magnetic field, we induce a single-layer to bilayer transition in two-dimensional electron systems confined to wide GaAs quantum wells, and study the geometric resonance of composite fermions (CFs) with a periodic density modulation in our samples. The measurements reveal that CFs exist close to bilayer quantum Hall states, formed at Landau level filling factors $ν=1$ and 1/2. Near $ν=1$, the geometric resonance features are consistent with half the total electron density in the bilayer system, implying that CFs prefer to stay in separate layers and exhibit a tw…
We construct a class of composite fermion states for bilayer electron systems in a strong transverse magnetic field, and determine quantitatively the phase diagram as a function of the layer separation, layer thickness, and electron density. We find, in general, that there are several transitions, and that the incompressible phases are separated by compressible ones. The paired states of composite fermions, described by Pfaffian wave functions, are also considered.
We discuss the composite fermion pairing state in bilayer quantum Hall systems. After the evaluation of the range of the inter-layer separation in which the quantum Hall state is stabilized, we discuss the effect of inter-layer tunneling on the composite fermion pairing state at ν=1/2. We show that there is a cusp at the transition point between the Halperin (3,3,1) state and the Pfaffian state.
Composite fermion metal states emerge in quantum Hall bilayers at total Landau level filling factor $ν_T$=1 when the tunneling gap collapses by application of in-plane components of the external magnetic field. Evidence of this transformation is found in the continua of spin excitations observed by inelastic light scattering below the spin-wave mode at the Zeeman energy. The low-lying spin modes are interpreted as quasiparticle excitations with simultaneous changes in spin orientation and composite fermion Landau level index.
The physics of the state at even denominator fractional fillings of Landau levels depends on the Coulomb pseudopotentials, and produces, in different GaAs Landau levels, a composite fermion Fermi sea, a stripe phase, or, possibly, a paired composite fermion state. We consider here even denominator fractions in graphene, which has different pseudopotentials as well as a possible four fold degeneracy of each Landau level. We test various composite fermion Fermi sea wave functions (fully polarized, SU(2) singlet, SU(4) singlet) as well as the paired composite fermion states in the n=0 and $n=1$ L…
Theoretical investigation demonstrates that the composite bilayer (i.e., chiral-magnetic/ferroelectric bilayer) offers the possibility of electric-induced magnetic Skyrmions [Phys. Rev. B \textbf{94}, 014311 (2016)]. In this Article, we propose a micromagnetic model to physically manipulate magnetic Bloch Skyrmions propagating in a chiral-magnetic thin film with a polarized ferroelectric essential to drive the system through the converse magnetoelectric effect. Effects caused by different velocities of the propagation, sizes of the thin film, and strength of the magnetoelectric couplings stron…
We investigate a mechanical method to manipulate magnetic Bloch Skyrmions by applying an electric field in a composite chiral-magnetic (CM)/ferroelectric (FE) bilayer. The magnetoelectric coupling at the interface allows the electric field to stimulate magnetic ordering. Therefore it offers the possibility to generate Skyrmions [Phys. Rev. B 94, 014311 (2016)]. Here, we design a movable and localized electric field source to drive skyrmion transport along the bilayer. A traveling velocity of the electric field source must be carefully chosen to show the stability and effciency of this process.…
We calculate the dispersion of the out-of-phase mode characteristic for the bilayer nu = 1 quantum Hall system applying the version of Chern-Simons theory of Murthy and Shankar that cures the unwanted bare electron mass dependence in the low-energy description of quantum Hall systems. The obtained value for the mode when d, distance between the layers, is zero is in a good agreement with the existing pseudospin picture of the system. For d nonzero but small we find that the mode is linearly dispersing and its velocity to a good approximation depends linearly on d. This is in agreement with the…
Simon et al suggest that composite fermions (CF) must be replaced by composite bosons (CB) and "111" state is a boson state. However, we find that such a transition in real GaAs is not possible and CF state cannot become a boson. Simon et al suggest that the total number of CF and CB is conserved. However, we find that the number of quasiparticles need not be conserved. Similarly, Simon et al suggest that CFs are formed but we find that this formation does not conserve energy so that CFs will not be formed. Simon et al compute using products of fermion and boson wave functions. We find that th…
When two 2D electron gas layers, each at Landau level filling factor $ν=1/2$, are close together a condensate of interlayer excitons emerges at low temperature. Although the excitonic phase is qualitatively well understood, the incoherent phase just above the critical layer separation is not. Using a combination of interlayer tunneling spectroscopy and conventional transport, we explore the incoherent phase in samples both near the phase boundary and further from it. In the more closely spaced bilayers we find the electronic spectral functions narrower and the Fermi energy of the $ν= 1/2$ comp…
We develop a phenomenological description of the nu=5/2 quantum Hall state in which the Halperin-Lee-Read theory of the half-filled Landau level is combined with a p-wave pairing interaction between composite fermions (CFs). The electromagnetic response functions for the resulting mean-field superconducting state of the CFs are calculated and used in an RPA calculation of the q and omega dependent longitudinal conductivity of the physical electrons, a quantity which can be measured experimentally.
The electron-electron interaction in the Landau levels of bilayer graphene is markedly different from that of conventional semiconductors such as GaAs. We show that in the zeroth Landau level of bilayer graphene, in the orbital which is dominated by the non-relativistic second Landau level wave function, by tuning the magnetic field a topological quantum phase transition from an Abelian composite fermion to a non-Abelian parton fractional quantum Hall state can be induced at filling factors $1/2, ~2/5$ and $3/7$. The parton states host exotic anyons that can potentially be utilized to store an…
We study the pairing symmetry of the interlayer paired state of composite fermions in quantum Hall bilayers. Based on the Halperin-Lee-Read (HLR) theory, the effect of the long-range Coulomb interaction and the internal Chern-Simons gauge fluctuation is analyzed with the random-phase approximation beyond the leading order contribution in small momentum expansion, and we observe that the interlayer paired states with a relative angular momentum $l=+1$ are energetically favored for filling $ν=\frac{1}{2}+\frac{1}{2}$ and $\frac{1}{4}+\frac{1}{4}$. The degeneracy between states with $\pm l$ is li…
Magnetic Skyrmions and multiferroics are the most interesting objects in nanostructure science that have great potential in future spin-electronic technology. The study of multiferroic Skyrmions has attracted much interest in recent years. This article reports magnetic Bloch Skyrmions induced by an electric driving field in a composite bilayer (chiral-magnetic/ferroelectric bilayer) lattice. By using the spin dynamics method, we use a classical magnetic spin model and an electric pseudospin model, which are coupled by a strong magnetoelectric coupling in the dynamical simulations. Interestingl…
Half-filled Landau levels admit the theoretically powerful fermion-vortex duality but longstanding puzzles remain in their experimental realization as $ν_T=1$ quantum Hall bilayers, further complicated by Zheng et al's recent numerical discovery of an unknown phase at intermediate layer spacing. Here we propose that half-filled quantum Hall bilayers ($ν_T=1$) at intermediate values of the interlayer distance $d/\ell_B$ enter a phase with \textit{paired exciton condensation}. This phase shows signatures analogous to the condensate of interlayer excitons (electrons bound to opposite-layer holes)…

We develop a proposal to realise a widely tunable and clean quantum phase transition in bilayer graphene between two paradigmatic fractionalized phases of matter: the Moore-Read fractional quantum Hall state and the composite Fermi liquid metal. This transition can be realized at total fillings $ν=\pm 3+1/2$ and the critical point can be controllably accessed by tuning either the interlayer electric bias or the perpendicular magnetic field values over a wide range of parameters. We study the transition numerically within a model that contains all leading single particle corrections to the band…
Abstract We theoretically study the realization of quantum anomalous Hall insulator (QAHI) of composite fermions (CFs) in the twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) system. We show that the moiré pattern in TBG is not only able to provide a commensurate moiré superlattice, but also a tunable effective periodic potential necessary for the realization, without the need of imposing an additional superstructure as in the conventional GaAs system. These make the TBG an ideal platform for realizing the QAHI of CFs. We establish the phase diagram with respect to tunable experimental parameters based on the D…
Recently several moiré super-lattice systems are proposed to host nearly flat $\pm$ Chern bands: the bands of the two valleys have opposite Chern numbers. In these systems the charge of each valley is separately conserved. For the $C=\pm 1$ case, in the perfect flat band limit, the system can be mapped to two Landau levels from opposite magnetic fields. Motivated by these promising experimental realizations, we consider a quantum Hall bilayers from opposite magnetic fields close to the filling $ν_T=\frac{1}{2}+\frac{1}{2}$. We add inter-layer repulsive interaction starting from two decoupled C…
The fractional quantum Hall (FQH) effect is a canonical example of electron-electron interactions producing new ground states in many-body systems. Most FQH studies have focused on the lowest Landau level (LL), whose fractional states are successfully explained by the composite fermion (CF) model, in which an even number of magnetic flux quanta are attached to an electron and where states form the sequence of filling factors $ν= p/(2mp \pm 1)$, with $m$ and $p$ positive integers. In the widely-studied GaAs-based system, the CF picture is thought to become unstable for the $N \geq 2$ LL, where …
We consider the two lowest Landau levels at half filling. In the higher Landau level (nu =5/2), we find a first order phase transition separating a compressible striped phase from a paired quantum Hall state, which is identified as the Moore-Read state. The critical point is very near the Coulomb potential and the transition can be driven by increasing the width of the electron layer. We find a much weaker transition (either second order or a crossover) from pairing to the composite fermion Fermi liquid behavior. A very similar picture is obtained for the lowest Landau level but the transition…
A bilayer system of two-dimensional electron gases in a perpendicular magnetic field exhibits rich phenomena. At total filling factor $ν_{tot} = 1$, as one increases the layer separation, the bilayer system goes from an interlayer coherent exciton condensed state to an incoherent phase of, most likely, two decoupled composite-fermion Fermi liquids. Many questions still remain as to the nature of the transition between these two phases. Recent experiments have demonstrated that spin plays an important role in this transition. Assuming that there is a direct first order transition between the sp…
Based on the known physics of the excitonic superfluid or 111 state of the quantum Hall ν=1/2+1/2 bilayer, we create a simple trial wavefunction ansatz for constructing a low energy branch of (Goldstone) excitations by taking the overall ground state and boosting one layer with respect to the other. This ansatz works extremely well for any interlayer spacing. For small d this is simply the physics of the Goldstone mode, whereas for large d this is a reflection of composite fermion physics. We find hints that certain aspects of composite fermion physics persist to low d whereas certain aspects …
We develop a nonperturbative approach to the quantum Hall bilayer (QHB) at ν=1 using trial wave functions. We predict phases of the QHB for arbitrary distance d and, our approach, in a dual picture, naturally introduces a new kind of quasiparticles - neutral fermions. Neutral fermion is a composite of two merons of the same vorticity and opposite charge. For small d (i.e. in the superfluid phase), neutral fermions appear as dipoles. At larger d dipoles dissociate into the phase of the two decoupled Fermi-liquid-like states. This scenario is relevant for the experimental situation where impurit…
Transitions from a paired quantum Hall state to another quantum Hall state in bilayer systems are discussed in the framework of the edge theory. Starting from the edge theory for the Haldane-Rezayi state, it is shown that the charging effect of a bilayer system which breaks the SU(2) symmetry of the pseudo-spin shifts the central charge and the conformal dimensions of the fermionic fields which describe the pseudo-spin sector in the edge theory. This corresponds to the transition from Haldane-Rezayi state to Halperin's 331 state, or singlet d-wave to triplet p-wave ABM type paired state in the…
We measured the magnetoresistance of bilayer quantum Hall (QH) effects at the fractional filling factor $ν=2/3$ by changing the total electron density and the density difference between two layers. Three different QH states were separated by two types of phase transition: One is the spin transition and the other is the pseudospin transition. In addition, two different hystereses were detected, one of which is specific to bilayer systems. The phase transitions and the hystereses are described well by a composite fermion model extended to a bilayer system.
We formulate the composite fermions in the presence of an in-plane magnetic field. As the in-plane field increases, if we assume the state at $ν=5/2$ turns into the mixed state between the unidirectional charge density wave domains and paired Hall state, we can phenomenologically fit the theoretically defined gap to the experimental measured results. We explain the destruction of the paired Hall states and then a phase transition from the paired Hall state to the unidirectional charge density wave from a symmetry point of view.

We find that for the pure Coulomb repulsion the composite Fermi sea at $ν=1/2$ is on the verge of an instability to triplet pairing of composite fermions. It is argued that a transition into the paired state, described by a Pfaffian wave function, may be induced if the short-range part of the interaction is softened by increasing the thickness of the two-dimensional electron system.
We propose a trial wave function for the quantum Hall bilayer system of total filling factor $ν_T=1$ at a layer distance $d$ to magnetic length $\ell$ ratio $d/\ell=κ_{c1}\approx1.1$, where the lowest charged excitation is known to have a level crossing. The wave function has two-particle correlations which fit well with those in previous numerical studies, and can be viewed as a Bose-Einstein condensate of free excitons formed by composite bosons and anti-composite bosons in different layers. We show the free nature of these excitons indicating an emergent SU(2) symmetry for the composite bos…
We use both Mutual Composite Fermion (MCF) and Composite Boson (CB) approach to study balanced and im-balanced Bi-Layer Quantum Hall systems (BLQH) and make critical comparisons between the two approaches. We find the CB approach is superior to the MCF approach in studying ground states with different kinds of broken symmetries. In the phase representation of the CB theory, we first study the Excitonic superfluid state (ESF). The theory puts spin and charge degree freedoms in the same footing, explicitly bring out the spin-charge connection and classify all the possible excitations in a system…
We extend the Composite Boson theory to study slightly im-balanced bi-layer Quantum Hall systems. In the global $ U(1) $ symmetry breaking excitonic superfluid side, as the imbalance increases, the system supports continuously changing fractional charges. In the translational symmetry breaking pseudo-spin density wave (PSDW) side, there are two quantum phase transitions from the commensurate PSDW to an in-commensurate PSDW and then to the excitonic superfluid state. We compare our theory with experimental data and also the previous microscopic calculations.
Recently, a Dirac (particle-hole symmetric) description of composite fermions in the half-filled quantum Hall system was proposed [D. T. Son, Phys. Rev. X 5, 031027 (2015)], and we study its possible consequences on BCS (Cooper) pairing of composite fermions (CF's). One of the main consequences is the existence of anisotropic states in single and bilayer systems, which was previously suggested in Ref. [J. S. Jeong and K. Park, Phys. Rev. B 91, 195119 (2015)]. We argue that in the half-filled single layer the gapped states may sustain anisotropy, because isotropic pairings may coexist with anis…
The magneto-transport properties of phosphorene are investigated by employing the generalized tight-binding model to calculate the energy bands. For bilayer phosphorene, a composite magnetic and electric field is shown to induce a feature-rich Landau level (LL) spectrum which includes two subgroups of low-lying LLs. The two subgroups possess distinct features in level spacings, quantum numbers, as well as field dependencies. These together lead to anomalous quantum Hall (QH) conductivities which include a well-shape, staircase and composite quantum structures with steps having varying heights …
We theoretically study bilayer superconducting topological insulator film, in which superconductivity exists for both top and bottom surface states. We show that an in-plane magnetic field can drive the system into Larkin-Ovchinnikov (LO) phase, where electrons are paired with finite momenta. The LO phase is topologically non-trivial and characterized by a Z 2 topological invariant, leading to a Majorana zero mode chain along the edge perpendicular to in-plane magnetic fields.
Quantum Hall bilayer systems at filling fractions near ν= 1/2 + 1/2 undergo a transition from a compressible phase with strong intralayer correlation to an incompressible phase with strong interlayer correlations as the layer separation d is reduced below some critical value. Deep in the intralayer phase (large separation) the system can be interpreted as a fluid of composite fermions (CFs), whereas deep in the interlayer phase (small separation) the system can be interpreted as a fluid of composite bosons (CBs). The focus of this paper is to understand the states that occur for intermediate l…
We consider the Coulomb drag between two two-dimensional electron layers at filling factor ν= 1/2 each, using a strong coupling approach within the composite fermion picture. Due to an attractive interlayer interaction, composite fermions are expected to form a paired state below a critical temperature T_c. We find that above T_c pairing fluctuations make the longitudinal transresistivity ρ_D increase with decreasing temperature. The pairing mechanism we study is very sensitive to density variations in the two layers, and to an applied current. We discuss possible relation to an experiment by …
Evidence of orbital Hall current induced correlation in second harmonic response of longitudinal and transverse voltage in light metal-ferromagnet bilayers
A theory is developed for the paired even-denominator fractional quantum Hall states in the lowest Landau level. We show that electrons bind to quantized vortices to form composite fermions, interacting through an exact instantaneous interaction that favors chiral p-wave pairing. Two canonically dual pairing gap functions are related by the bosonic Laughlin wavefunction (Jastraw factor) due to the correlation holes. We find that the ground state is the Moore-Read pfaffian in the long wavelength limit for weak Coulomb interactions, a new pfaffian of an oscillatory pairing function for intermedi…
We have studied the fractional and integer quantum Hall (QH) effects in a high-mobility double-layer two-dimensional electron system. We have compared the "stability" of the QH state in balanced and unbalanced double quantum wells. The behavior of the n=1 QH state is found to be strikingly different from all others. It is anomalously stable, though all other states decay, as the electron density is made unbalanced between the two quantum wells. We interpret the peculiar features of the nu=1 state as the consequences of the interlayer quantum coherence developed spontaneously on the basis of th…
We study the role of anisotropy on the transport properties of composite fermions near Landau level filling factor $ν=1/2$ in two-dimensional holes confined to a GaAs quantum well. By applying a parallel magnetic field, we tune the composite fermion Fermi sea anisotropy and monitor the relative change of the transport scattering time at $ν=1/2$ along the principal directions. Interpreted in a simple Drude model, our results suggest that the scattering time is longer along the longitudinal direction of the composite fermion Fermi sea. Furthermore, the measured energy gap for the fractional quan…
There is much interest in the realization of systems with p-wave pairing in one dimension or chiral p-wave pairing in two dimensions, because these are believed to support Majorana modes at the ends or inside vortices. We consider a two component system of composite fermions and provide theoretical evidence that, under appropriate conditions, the screened interaction between the minority composite fermions is such as to produce an almost exact realization of p-wave paired state described by the so-called anti-Pfaffian wave function. This state is predicted to occur at filling $ν=3/8$ or 13/8 i…
An understanding of the physics of half or quarter filled lowest Landau level has been achieved in terms of a Fermi sea of composite fermions, but the nature of the state at other even-denominator fractions has remained unclear. We investigate in this work Landau level fillings of the form $ν=(2n+1)/(4n+4)$, which correspond to composite fermion fillings $ν^*=n+1/2$. By considering various plausible candidate states, we rule out the composite-fermion Fermi sea and paired composite-fermion state at these filling factors, and predict that the system phase separates into stripes of $n$ and $n+1$ …
We examine the possibility of creating the Moore-Read Pfaffian in the lowest Landau level when the multicomponent Halperin 331 state (believed to describe quantum Hall bilayers and wide quantum wells at the filling factor $ν=1/2$) is destroyed by the increase of tunneling. Using exact diagonalization of the bilayer Hamiltonian with short-range and long-range (Coulomb) interactions in spherical and periodic rectangular geometries, we establish that tunneling is a perturbation that drives the 331 state into a compressible composite Fermi liquid, with the possibility for an intermediate critical …
We argue that the naively expected singularities of the Fermi surface, in the mixed composite boson - composite fermion states proposed [S.H. Simon et al., PRL 91, 046803(2003)] for the evolution of ν= 1 bilayer quantum Hall system with distance, are obliterated. Our conclusion is based on a careful analysis of the momentum distribution in ν= 1/2 single-layer composite-fermion state. We point out to a possibility of the phenomenon hitherto unknown outside Kondo lattice systems when, in a translationally invariant system, Fermi-liquid-like portion of electrons enlarges its volume.
In high-quality two-dimensional electrons confined to GaAs quantum wells, near Landau level filling factors $ν=$ 1/2 and 1/4, we observe signatures of the commensurability of the electron-flux composite fermion cyclotron orbits with a unidirectional periodic density modulation. Focusing on the data near $ν=1/2$, we directly and quantitatively probe the shape of the composite fermions' cyclotron orbit, and therefore their Fermi contour, as a function of magnetic field ($B_{||}$) applied parallel to the sample plane. The composite fermion Fermi contour becomes severely distorted with increasing …
