This paper is aimed at giving an overview of the global properties of the rich cluster of galaxies ABCG 209. This is achieved by complementing the already available data with new medium resolution spectroscopy and NIR photometry which allow us to i) analyse in detail the cluster dynamics, distinguishing among galaxies belonging to different substructures and deriving their individual velocity distributions, using a total sample of 148 galaxies in the cluster region, of which 134 belonging to the cluster; ii) derive the cluster NIR luminosity function; iii) study the Kormendy relation and the photometric plane of cluster early-type galaxies (ETGs). Finally we provide an extensive photometric (optical and NIR) and spectroscopic dataset for such a complex system to be used in further analyses investigating the nature, formation and evolution of rich clusters of galaxies. The observational scenario confirms that ABCG 209 is presently undergoing strong dynamical evolution with the merging of two or more subclumps. This interpretation is also supported by the detection of a radio halo (Giovannini et al. 2006) suggesting that there is a recent or ongoing merging. Cluster ETGs follow a Kormendy relation whose slope is consistent with previous studies both at optical and NIR wavelengths. We investigate the origin of the intrinsic scatter of the photometric plane due to trends of stellar populations, using line indices as indicators of age, metallicity and alpha/Fe enhancement. We find that the chemical evolution of galaxies could be responsible for the intrinsic dispersion of the Photometric Plane.
We present a combined X-ray and optical analysis of the ABCG 85/87/89 complex of clusters of galaxies, based on the ROSAT PSPC image, optical photometric catalogues (Slezak et al. 1998), and an optical redshift catalogue (Durret et al. 1998). From this combined data set, we find striking alignments at all scales at PA$\simeq$160°. At small scales, the cD galaxy in ABCG 85 and the brightest galaxies in the cluster are aligned along this PA. At a larger scale, X-ray emission defines a comparable PA south-southeast of ABCG 85 towards ABCG 87, with a patchy X-ray structure very different from the …
(Abridged) We present a morphological and structural analysis of the Richness zero cluster ABCG 194, known as a ``linear cluster'', based on a catalogue of 97 galaxies with B magnitudes and redshifts, a ROSAT PSPC image and radio data. The overall large scale structure is rather smooth and comparable at optical and X-ray wavelengths. The cluster is elongated along PA $\approx 50$; however it appears as ``linear'' when taking into account only galaxies in the very central part (the axial ratio varies from 0.2 in the central region to 0.8 for a larger region). We have obtained the galaxy and X-r…
We study the internal dynamics of the rich galaxy cluster ABGC 209 on the basis of new spectroscopic and photometric data. The distribution in redshift shows that ABCG 209 is a well isolated peak of 112 detected member galaxies at z=0.209, characterised by a high value of the line-of-sight velocity dispersion, sigma_v=1250-1400 Km/s, on the whole observed area (1 Mpc/h from the cluster center), that leads to a virial mass of M=1.6-2.2x10^15 M_sun within the virial radius, assuming the dynamical equilibrium. The presence of a velocity gradient in the velocity field, the elongation in the spatia…
This paper is the fourth of a series dealing with the cluster of galaxies ABCG 85. Using our two extensive photometric and spectroscopic catalogues (with 4232 and 551 galaxies respectively), we discuss here three topics derived from optical data. First, we present the properties of emission line versus non-emission line galaxies, showing that their spatial distributions somewhat differ; emission line galaxies tend to be more concentrated in the south region where groups appear to be falling onto the main cluster, in agreement with the hypothesis (presented in our previous paper) that this infa…
We examine the environmental effects on the photometric properties of galaxies for the rich galaxy cluster ABCG 209 at z=0.209. We use archive CFHT optical imaging of a 42'x28' field centred on the cluster to produce a galaxy sample complete to B=25.0 and R=24.5. Both the composite and red sequence galaxy luminosity functions are found to be dependent on the local galaxy surface density, their faint-end slopes becoming shallower with increasing density. We explain this as a combination of the morphology-density relation, and dwarf galaxies being cannibalised and/or disrupted by the cD galaxy a…
We describe the construction of MegaZ-LRG, a photometric redshift catalogue of over one million luminous red galaxies (LRGs) in the redshift range 0.4 < z < 0.7 with limiting magnitude i < 20. The catalogue is selected from the imaging data of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 4. The 2dF-SDSS LRG and Quasar (2SLAQ) spectroscopic redshift catalogue of 13,000 intermediate-redshift LRGs provides a photometric redshift training set, allowing use of ANNz, a neural network-based photometric-redshift estimator. The rms photometric redshift accuracy obtained for an evaluation set selected from…
We present a catalogue of previously unpublished optical and infrared photometry for a sample of 162 emission-line objects and shell stars visible from the southern hemisphere. The data were obtained between 1978 and 1997 in the Walraven (WULBV), Johnson/Cousins (UBV(RI)_c) and ESO and SAAO near-infrared (JHKLM) photometric systems. Most of the observed objects are Herbig Ae/Be (HAeBe) stars or HAeBe candidates appearing in the list of HAeBe candidates of Thé et al. (1994), although several B[e] stars, LBVs and T Tauri are also included in our sample. For many of the stars the data presented h…
We present two catalogues of galaxies in the direction of the rich cluster Abell 496. The first one includes 3,879 galaxies located in a region of roughly 1.3 degrees from the cluster centre. It has been obtained from a list of more than 35,000 galaxy candidates detected by scanning part of a Schmidt photographic plate taken in the b_J band. Positions are very accurate in this catalogue but magnitudes are not. This led us to perform CCD imaging observations in the V and R bands to calibrate these photographic magnitudes. A second catalogue gives a list of galaxies with CCD magnitudes in the V …
New B, V, I photometry was obtained for a sample of 152 variables (125 RR Lyrae's, 4 anomalous Cepheids, 11 classical Cepheids, 11 eclipsing binaries and a delta Scuti star) in two regions near the bar of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). We derived complete and well sampled B and V light curves, very accurate periods, epochs of maximum light, amplitudes, intensity- and magnitude-averaged apparent luminosities for about 95% of the RR Lyrae stars. All these informations are contained in the photometric catalogue. Metallicities from the Fourier decomposition of the V light curves were derived fo…
We have obtained a mosaic of CCD images of the Coma cluster in the V-band covering a region of approximately 0.4 degrees$^2$ around both central cluster galaxies NGC 4889 and NGC 4874. An additional frame of $\sim$ 90 arcmin$^2$ was taken of the south-west region around NGC 4839. We derived a catalogue of 7023 galaxies and 4096 stars containing positions, central surface brightnesses and isophotal V$_{26.5}$ magnitudes. We estimate that data is complete up to V $_{26.5}\sim$ 22.5 and the surface brightness limiting detection value is $μ$ $\sim$ 24 mag/arcsec$^2$. In this paper we present the c…
We present two catalogues of galaxies in the direction of the rich cluster \a85. The first one includes 4,232 galaxies located in a region $\pm 1^\circ$ from the cluster centre. It has been obtained from a list of more than 25,000 galaxy candidates detected by scanning a Schmidt photographic plate taken in the \bj band. Positions are very accurate in this catalogue but magnitudes are not. This led us to perform CCD imaging observations in the V and R bands to calibrate these photographic magnitudes. A second catalogue (805 galaxies) gives a list of galaxies with CCD magnitudes in the V and R b…
Photometric redshifts have proven a powerful tool in identifying galaxies over a large range of lookback times. We have been generalising this technique to incorporate the selection of candidate high redshift QSOs. We have applied this to a large optical/near-infrared imaging survey in 6 wavebands aiming to push farther in redshift (and fainter in luminosity) than previous studies. We believe that study of these very faint and distant objects provides valuable insights into galaxy formation and evolution. Here we present work in progress and preliminary results for a catalogue of objects detec…
We present a spectro-photometric catalogue of the evolution of supernova 1988Z which combines new and published observations in the radio, optical and X-ray bands, with the aim of offering a comprehensive view of the evolution of this object and deriving the total energy radiated since discovery. The major contribution to the total radiated energy comes at optical to X-ray frequencies, with a total emission of at least $2 \times 10^{51}$ erg (for Ho=50 km/s) in 8.5 years. A model-dependent extrapolation of this value indicates that the total radiated energy may be as high as $10^{52}$ erg. The…
Deep B,V time-series photometry obtained with the ESO Very Large Telescope has been used to identify variable stars in the dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 6822. We surveyed a 6.8x6.8 arcmin area of the galaxy and detected a total number of 390 candidate variables with the optimal image subtraction technique (Alard 2000). Light curves on a magnitude scale were obtained for 262 of these variables. Differential flux light curves are available for the remaining sample. In this paper we present the photometric catalogue of calibrated light curves and time-series data, along with coordinates and classifi…
In this paper we present a deep and homogeneous i-band selected multi-waveband catalogue in the COSMOS field covering an area of about 0.7 square-degree. Our catalogue with a formal 50 percent completeness limit for point sources of i~26.7 comprises about 290.000 galaxies with information in 8 passbands. We combine publicly available u, B, V, r, i, z, and K data with proprietary imaging in H band. We discuss in detail the observations, the data reduction, and the photometric properties of the H-band data. We estimate photometric redshifts for all the galaxies in the catalogue. A comparison wit…
The Las Campanas Observatory and Anglo--Australian Telescope Rich Cluster Survey (LARCS) is a panoramic imaging and spectroscopic survey of an X-ray luminosity-selected sample of 21 clusters of galaxies at 0.07<z<0.16. CCD imaging was obtained in B and R of typically 2-degree wide regions centred on the 21 clusters, and the galaxy sample selected from the imaging is being used for an on-going spectroscopic survey of the clusters with the 2dF spectrograph on the Anglo-Australian Telescope. This paper presents the reduction of the imaging data and the photometric analysis used in the survey. Bas…
We present the COMBO-17 object catalogue of the Chandra Deep Field South for public use, covering a field which is 31.5' x 30' in size. This catalogue lists astrometry, photometry in 17 passbands from 350 to 930 nm, and ground-based morphological data for 63,501 objects. The catalogue also contains multi-colour classification into the categories 'Star', 'Galaxy' and 'Quasar' as well as photometric redshifts. We include restframe luminosities in Johnson, SDSS and Bessell passbands and estimated errors. The redshifts are most reliable at R<24, where the sample contains approximately 100 quasars,…
We present an update to the photometric calibration of the COMBO-17 catalogue on the Extended Chandra Deep Field South, which is now consistent with the GaBoDS and MUSYC catalogues. As a result, photometric redshifts become slightly more accurate, with <0.01 rms and little bias in the delta_z/(1+z) of galaxies with R<21 and of QSOs with R<24. With increasing photon noise the rms of galaxies reaches 0.02 for R<23 and 0.035 at R~23.5. Consequences for the rest-frame colours of galaxies at z<1 are discussed.
We present a new catalogue, the Imperial IRAS-FSC Redshift Catalogue (IIFSCz), of 60,303 galaxies selected at 60 micron from the IRAS Faint Source Catalogue (FSC). The IIFSCz consists of accurate position, optical, near-infrared and/or radio identifications, spectroscopic redshift (if available) or photometric redshift (if possible), predicted far-infrared (FIR) and submillimetre (submm) fluxes ranging from 12 to 1380 micron based upon the best-fit infrared template. About 55% of the galaxies in the IIFSCz have spectroscopic redshifts and a further 20% have photometric redshifts obtained throu…
The Millennium Galaxy Catalogue (MGC) is a deep ($μ_{\rm B,lim}=26$ mag arcsec$^{-2}$), wide field CCD imaging survey, covering 37.5deg$^2$ and is completely contained within the 2dFGRS and SDSS-EDR. We compare the photometry and completeness of the 2dFGRS and the SDSS-EDR with the MGC. We have also undertaken a photometric comparison to SCOS and SDSS-DR1 data. We find that $B_{MGC}-B_{2dF}=0.035$ mag with an uncertainty of 0.142 mag per galaxy, $B_{MGC}-B_{SCOS}=0.032$ mag with an uncertainty of 0.108 mag, $B_{MGC}-B_{SDSS-EDR}=0.032$ mag with an uncertainty of 0.094 mag, and $B_{MGC}-B_{SDSS…
We investigate, using simulated galaxy catalogues, the completeness of searches for massive clusters of galaxies in redshift surveys or imaging surveys with photometric redshift estimates, i.e. what fraction of clusters (M>10^14/h Msun) are found in such surveys. We demonstrate that the matched filter method provides an efficient and reliable means of identifying massive clusters even when the redshift estimates are crude. In true redshift surveys the method works extremely well. We demonstrate that it is possible to construct catalogues with high completeness, low contamination and both varyi…
The catalogue of the Johnson-Cousins B,V and I light curves obtained for 162 variable stars (135 RR Lyrae, 4 candidate Anomalous Cepheids, 11 Classical Cepheids, 11 eclipsing binaries and 1 delta Scuti star) in two areas close to the bar of the Large Magellanic Cloud is presented along with coordinates, finding charts, periods, epochs, amplitudes, and mean quantities (intensity- and magnitude-averaged luminosities) of the variables with full coverage of the light variations. A star by star comparison is made with MACHO and OGLE II photometries based on both variable and constant stars in commo…
We present a catalogue of morphologically classified bright galaxies in the north equatorial stripe (230 deg$^2$) derived from the Third Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Morphological classification is performed by visual inspection of images in the $g$ band. The catalogue contains 2253 galaxies complete to a magnitude limit of $r=16$ after Galactic extinction correction, selected from 2658 objects that are judged as extended in the photometric catalogue in the same magnitude limit. 1866 galaxies in our catalogue have spectroscopic information. A brief statistical analysis …
We have conducted a variability survey of the local group galaxy M33 using g', r', and i' observations from 27 nights spanning 17 months made with the MegaPrime/MegaCam instrument on the 3.6 m CFHT telescope. We identify more than 36000 variable sources with g',r',i' < 24 out of approximately 2 million point sources in a one square degree field of view. This increases the number of known variables in this galaxy by more than a factor of 20. In this paper we provide a brief description of the data and a general overview of the variable star population which includes more than 800 candidate vari…
(abridged) INTEGRAL has discovered large numbers of new hard X-ray sources, many of which are believed to be high mass X-ray binaries. However, for a significant fraction, their counterparts remain unidentified. We explore the use of photometric catalogues to find optical counterparts to high mass X-ray binaries. Candidates were selected from 2MASS photometry by means of a reddening free Q parameter. Sufficiently bright candidates were spectroscopically observed. Many of the candidates selected turned out to be moderately reddened late A or early F stars, but our method is able to identify the…
The Gaia mission is reviewed together with the expected contents of the final catalogue. It is then argued that the ultimate goal of Galactic structure studies with Gaia astrometry should be to build a dynamical model of our galaxy which is capable of explaining the contents of the Gaia catalogue. This will be possible only by comparing predicted catalogue data to Gaia's actual measurements. To complement this approach the Gaia catalogue should be used to recalibrate photometric distance and abundance indicators across the HR-diagram in order to overcome the lack of precise parallax data at th…
We present a new public archive of light-motion curves in Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Stripe 82, covering 99 deg in right ascension from RA = 20.7 h to 3.3 h and spanning 2.52 deg in declination from Dec = -1.26 to 1.26 deg, for a total sky area of ~249 sq deg. Stripe 82 has been repeatedly monitored in the u, g, r, i and z bands over a seven-year baseline. Objects are cross-matched between runs, taking into account the effects of any proper motion. The resulting catalogue contains almost 4 million light-motion curves of stellar objects and galaxies. The photometry are recalibrated to corr…
We present the project we are carrying out at present, the search for and characterisation of pre-main sequence (PMS) stars among the members of Galactic young clusters. The observations of 10 southern clusters, nine of them located in the Carina-Sagittarius spiral arm of the Milky Way are presented. We aim at listing candidate PMS member stars in young clusters. The catalogued stars will serve as a basis for future spectroscopic studies of individual objects to determine the properties of stellar formation in the last phases before the main sequence stage. Properties such as the presence of r…
We present a catalogue of point-source Halpha emission line objects selected from the INT/WFC Photometric H$α$ Survey of the Northern Galactic Plane (IPHAS). The catalogue covers the magnitude range 13 < r' < 19.5 and includes northern hemisphere sources in the Galactic latitude range -5 < b < 5 degress. It is derived from ~1500 square degress worth of imaging data, which represents 80 percent of the final IPHAS survey area. The electronic version of the catalogue will be updated once the full survey data becomes available. In total, the present catalogue contains 4853 point sources that exhib…
We analyze MegaZ-LRG, a photometric-redshift catalogue of Luminous Red Galaxies (LRGs) based on the imaging data of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) 4th Data Release. MegaZ-LRG, presented in a companion paper, contains 10^6 photometric redshifts derived with ANNz, an Artificial Neural Network method, constrained by a spectroscopic sub-sample of 13,000 galaxies obtained by the 2dF-SDSS LRG and Quasar (2SLAQ) survey. The catalogue spans the redshift range 0.4 < z < 0.7 with an r.m.s. redshift error ~ 0.03(1+z), covering 5,914 deg^2 to map out a total cosmic volume 2.5 h^-3 Gpc^3. In this stud…
We discuss the construction of a photometric redshift catalogue of Luminous Red Galaxies (LRGs) from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), emphasizing the principal steps necessary for constructing such a catalogue -- (i) photometrically selecting the sample, (ii) measuring photometric redshifts and their error distributions, (iii) and estimating the true redshift distribution. We compare two photometric redshift algorithms for these data and find that they give comparable results. Calibrating against the SDSS and SDSS-2dF spectroscopic surveys, we find that the photometric redshift accuracy is…
We present a new cluster-finding algorithm based on a combination of the Voronoi Tessellation and Friends-Of-Friends methods. The algorithm utilises probability distribution functions derived from a photometric redshift analysis and is tested on simulated cluster-catalogues. We use a 9 band photometric catalogue over 0.5 square degrees in the Subaru XMM-Newton Deep Field. The photometry is comprised of UKIDSS Ultra Deep Survey infrared J and K data combined with 3.6 micro-m and 4.5 micro-m Spitzer bands and optical BVRi'z' imaging from the Subaru Telescope. The cluster catalogue contains 13 cl…
We describe the construction of catalogues of galaxy clusters from the APM Galaxy survey using an automated algorithm based on Abell-like selection criteria. We investigate the effects of varying several parameters in our selection algorithm, including the magnitude range, and radius from the cluster centre used to estimate the cluster richnesses. We quantify the accuracy of the photometric distance estimates by comparing with measured redshifts, and we investigate the stability and completeness of the resulting catalogues. We find that the angular correlation functions for different cluster c…
We present the SWIRE Photometric Redshift Catalogue, 1025119 redshifts of unprecedented reliability and accuracy. Our method is based on fixed galaxy and QSO templates applied to data at 0.36-4.5 mu, and on a set of 4 infrared emission templates fitted to infrared excess data at 3.6-170 mu. The code involves two passes through the data, to try to optimize recognition of AGN dust tori. A few carefully justified priors are used and are the key to supression of outliers. Extinction, A_V, is allowed as a free parameter. We use a set of 5982 spectroscopic redshifts, taken from the literature and fr…
We present a catalogue of velocities for 551 galaxies (and give the coordinates of 39 stars misclassified as galaxies in our photometric plate catalogue) in a region covering about 100'$\times$100' (0.94$\times$0.94 Mpc for an average redshift of 0.0555, assuming H$_\circ$=50 km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$) in the direction of the rich cluster Abell 85. This catalogue includes previously published redshifts by Beers et al. (1991) and Malumuth et al. (1992), together with our 367 new measurements. A total of 305 galaxies have velocities in the interval 13350-20000 km s$^{-1}$, and will be considered as…
The CRONA project is a joint enterprise between Caltech and the astronomical observatory of Rome and Naples aimed to the photometric calibration of the Second Palomar Sky Survey (POSS-II) plates and to the construction of a complete photometric and astrometric catalogue of all objects present on the POSS-II. The calibrated final catalogues of objects will be made available to the community. We present here a comparison between the performances of the SKICAT and DAOPHOT packages applied to POSS-II images of the globular cluster M92.
We present the CFHTLS-Archive-Research Survey (CARS). It is a virtual multi-colour survey based on public archive images from the CFHT-Legacy-Survey. Our main scientific interests in CARS are optical searches for galaxy clusters from low to high redshift and their subsequent study with photometric and weak-gravitational lensing techniques. As a first step of the project we present multi-colour catalogues from 37 sq. degrees of the CFHTLS-Wide component. Our aims are to create astrometrically and photometrically well calibrated co-added images. Second goal are five-band (u*, g', r', i', z') mul…
We present the final band-merged ELAIS catalogue at 6.7, 15, 90, and 175 $μ$m, and the associated data at u,g,r,i,z,J,H,K, and 20cm. The origin of the survey, infrared and radio observations, data-reduction and optical identifications are briefly reviewed, and a summary of the area covered, and completeness limit for each infrared band is given. A detailed discussion of the band-merging and optical association strategy is given. The total catalogues consists of 2860 sources. For extragalactic sources observed in 3 or more infrared bands, colour-colour diagrams are presented and discussed in te…
Current catalogues of open clusters are rather heterogeneous and incomplete lists of clusters than true catalogues. Before there has been no attempts of automatic search for open clusters in huge photometric catalogues using homogeneous all-sky approach. We have developed such a method based on extraction from catalogue and successive analysis of stellar densities using the colour-magnitude diagrams. Our algorithm finds density peaks and then verifies the significance of these peaks exploiting the fact that in real clusters only stars lying on the isochrone must show density peaks, in contrast…
We have identified in the 2MASS database 693 known and candidate globular clusters in M31. The 2MASS J,H,K magnitudes of these objects have been transformed to the same homogeneous photometric system of existing near infrared photometry of M31 globulars, finally yielding J,H,K integrated photometry for 279 confirmed M31 clusters, 406 unconfirmed candidates and 8 objects with controversial classification. Of these objects 529 lacked any previous estimate of their near infrared magnitudes. The newly assembled near infrared dataset has been implemented into a revised version of the Bologna Catalo…
An analysis of the candidate embedded stellar systems in the reflection nebulae vdBH-RN26, vdBH-RN38, vdBH-RN53a, GGD20, ESO95-RN18 and NGC6595 is presented. Optical spectroscopic data from CASLEO (Argentina) in conjunction with near infrared photometry from the 2MASS Point Source Catalogue were employed. The analysis is based on source surface density, colour-colour and colour-magnitude diagrams together with theoretical pre-main sequence isochrones. We take into account the field population affecting the analysis by carrying out a statistical subtraction. The fundamental parameters for the s…
