We investigate theoretically the extension of cavity optomechanics to multiple membrane systems. We describe such a system in terms of the coupling of the collective normal modes of the membrane array to the light fields. We show these modes can be optically addressed individually and be cooled, trapped and characterized, e.g. via quantum nondemolition measurements. Analogies between this system and a linear chain of trapped ions or dipolar molecules imply the possibility of related applications in the quantum regime.
We study the optomechanical behaviour of a driven Fabry-Pérot cavity containing two vibrating dielectric membranes. We characterize the cavity-mode frequency shift as a function of the two-membrane positions, and report a $\sim 2.47$ gain in the optomechanical coupling strength of the membrane relative motion with respect to the single membrane case. This is achieved when the two membranes are properly positioned to form an inner cavity which is resonant with the driving field. We also show that this two-membrane system has the capability to tune the single-photon optomechanical coupling on de…
The macroscopic tunneling of an optomechanical membrane is considered. A cavity mode which couples quadratically to the membranes position can create highly tunable adiabatic double-well potentials, which together with the high Q-factors of such membranes render the observation of macroscopic tunneling possible. A suitable, pulsed measurement scheme using a linearly coupled mode of the cavity for the verification of the effect is studied.
We consider a quantum optomechanical scheme wherein an ordered two-dimensional array of laser-trapped atoms is used as a movable membrane. The extremely light mass of the atoms yields very strong optomechanical coupling, while their spatial order largely eliminates scattering losses. We show that this combination opens the way for quantum optomechanical nonlinearities, well within the ultimate single-photon strong-coupling regime. As an example, we analyze the possibility to observe optomechanically induced quantum effects such as photon blockade and time-delayed non-classical correlations. We…
We theoretically study an optomechanical system, which consists of a two-sided cavity and a mechanical membrane that is placed outside of it. The membrane is positioned close to one of its mirrors, and the cavity is coupled to the external light field through the other mirror. Our study is focused on the regime where the dispersive optomechanical coupling in the system vanishes. Such a regime is found to be possible if the membrane is less reflecting than the adjacent mirror, yielding a potentially very strong dissipative optomechanical coupling. Specifically, if the absolute values of amplitu…
We calculate the optomechanical coupling strength for a multi-membrane in a cavity system. The optimal configuration for an array of $N$ membranes placed near the center of a cavity is identified. This results in a coupling strength much greater than previously proposed multi-membrane configurations. We find that the coupling strength scales exponentially with the number of membranes until saturating due to complete localization of the field within the array. Furthermore we explore two sources of loss, those due to light absorption within the membrane(s) and leakage through the cavity's end-mi…
We formulate a non-relativistic Hamiltonian in order to describe the interaction between a moving dielectric membrane and radiation pressure. Such a Hamiltonian is derived without making use of the single-mode adiabatic approximation, and hence it enables us to incorporate multi-mode effects in cavity optomechanics. By performing second quantization, we show how a set of generalized Fock states can be constructed to represent quantum states of the membrane and cavity field. In addition, we discuss examples showing how photon scattering among different cavity modes would modify the interaction …
The study of optomechanical systems has attracted much attention, most of which are concentrated in the physics in the small-amplitude regime. While in this article, we focus on optomechanics in the extremely-large-amplitude regime and consider both classical and quantum dynamics. Firstly, we study classical dynamics in a membrane-in-the-middle optomechanical system in which a partially reflecting and flexible membrane is suspended inside an optical cavity. We show that the membrane can present self-sustained oscillations with limit cycles in the shape of sawtooth-edged ellipses and exhibit dy…
We study the classical dynamics of a membrane inside a cavity in the situation where this optomechanical system possesses a reflection symmetry. Symmetry breaking occurs through supercritical and subcritical pitchfork bifurcations of the static fixed point solutions. Both bifurcations can be observed through variation of the laser-cavity detuning, which gives rise to a boomerang-like fixed point pattern with hysteresis. The symmetry-breaking fixed points evolve into self-sustained oscillations when the laser intensity is increased. In addition to the analysis of the accompanying Hopf bifurcati…
In this paper, by invariant-based inverse engineering, we design classical driving fields to transfer quantum fluctuations between two suspended membranes in an optomechanical cavity system. The transfer can be quickly attained through a non-adiabatic evolution path determined by a so-called dynamical invariant. Such an evolution path allows one to optimize the occupancies of the unstable "intermediate" states thus the influence of cavity decays can be suppressed. Numerical simulation demonstrates that a perfect fluctuation transfer between two membranes can be rapidly achieved in one step, an…
We study Stokes and anti-Stokes processes in cavity optomechanics in the regime of strong coupling. The Stokes and anti-Stokes signals exhibit prominently the normal-mode splitting. We report gain for the Stokes signal. We also report lifetime splitting when the pump power is less than the critical power for normal-mode splitting. The nonlinear Stokes processes provide a useful method for studying strong coupling regime of cavity optomechanics. We also investigate the correlations between the Stokes and anti-Stokes photons produced spontaneously by the optomechanical system. At zero temperatur…
We present a theoretical scheme for ground state cooling of a mechanical resonator in a membrane-in-middle optomechanical system (OMS) driven by two red-detuned drive fields. The details of dynamical evolution of OMS are provided, and the effect of system conditions on cooling results are systematically studied. Most importantly, the setups with two drives are found to be capable of achieving better cooling results than the theoretical cooling limit with single cavity. Even an improvement by one order of thermal phonon number is possible with proper combination of the cavity damping rate and d…
We present the results of theoretical and experimental studies of dispersively coupled (or "membrane in the middle") optomechanical systems. We calculate the linear optical properties of a high finesse cavity containing a thin dielectric membrane. We focus on the cavity's transmission, reflection, and finesse as a function of the membrane's position along the cavity axis and as a function of its optical loss. We compare these calculations with measurements and find excellent agreement in cavities with empty-cavity finesses in the range 10^4 to 10^5. The imaginary part of the membrane's index o…
We propose a method to generate entangled states of the vibrational modes of N membranes which are coupled to a cavity mode via the radiation pressure. Using sideband excitations, we show that arbitrary entangled states of vibrational modes of different membranes can be produced in principle by sequentially applying a series of classical pulses with desired frequencies, phases and durations. As examples, we show how to synthesize several typical entangled states, for example, Bell states, NOON states, GHZ states and W states. The environmental effect, information leakage, and experimental feas…
Here, we study the controllable optical responses in a two-cavity optomechanical system, especially on the $\mathit{perfect}$ optomechanically induced transparency (OMIT) in the model which has never been studied before. The results show that the perfect OMIT can still occur even with a large mechanical damping rate, and at the perfect transparency window the long-lived slow light can be achieved. In addition, we find that the conversion between the perfect OMIT and optomechanically induced absorption can be easily achieved just by adjusting the driving field strength of the second cavity. We …
We study the optomechanically induced amplification and perfect transparency in a double-cavity optomechanical system. We find if two control lasers with appropriate amplitudes and detunings are applied to drive the system, the phenomenon of optomechanically induced amplification for a probe laser can occur. In addition, perfect optomechanically induced transparency phenomenon, which is robust to mechanical dissipation, can be realized by the same type of drive. These results are very important for signal amplification, light storage, fast light and slow light in the quantum information proces…
We propose a scheme that can generate tunable optomechanically induced transparency in a hybrid piezooptomechanical cavity system. The system is composed of a high-quality planar distributed Bragg reflector cavity modified with an embedded Gaussian-shaped defect. Moreover, interdigitated transducers are fabricated on the surface of the cavity to generate surface acoustic waves. Under the actuation of the surface acoustic wave, the upper Bragg mirrors can be vibrated as a bulk acoustic resonator, and the distributed Bragg reflector cavity becomes a standard three-level optomechanical system. In…
We study the propagation of a weak probe field through an optomechanical system in which $N$ nearly degenerate mechanical membranes are inside a Febry-Perot cavity, and couple dispersively to an intracavity field. We derive a general analytical expression for the output probe field. We show that the in-phase quadrature of the output probe field can exhibit multiple electromagnetically induced transparency with at most $N$ narrow transparency windows. We find that the superluminal light can be achieved with at most $N$ different negative group velocities at the transparency windows. Moreover, b…
We show that a cavity optomechanical system formed by a mechanical resonator simultaneously coupled to two modes of an optical cavity can be used for the implementation of a deterministic quantum phase gate between optical qubits associated with the two intracavity modes. The scheme is realizable for sufficiently strong single-photon optomechanical coupling in the resolved sideband regime, and is robust against cavity losses.
We theoretically propose a scheme to realize an all-optically controlled quantum optomechanical transistor based on a cavity-optomechanical system, where the cavity photons interfere with the input signal photons while the pump field controls the transmission spectrum of the signal laser. Theoretical analysis shows such a quantum optomechanical transistor can be switched on or off by turning on or off the pump laser, which corresponds to amplification or attenuation of the signal laser, respectively. The results further demonstrate that the output signal gain is enhanced abruptly with increasi…
We theoretically investigate the optomechanically induced transparency (OMIT) phenomenon in a N-cavity optomechanical system doped with a pair of Rydberg atoms with the presence of a strong pump field and a weak probe field applied to the Nth cavity. 2N-1(N<10) number OMIT windows can be observed in the output field when N cavities coupled with N mechanical oscillators, respectively. But, the mechanical oscillators coupled with different even-odd label cavities lead to different effect on OMIT. On the other hand, two additional transparent windows (extra resonances) are presented, if two Rydbe…
We propose a scheme to realize the phase-preserving amplification without the restriction of resolved sideband condition. As a result, our gain-bandwidth product is about one magnitude larger than the existing proposals. In our model, an additional cavity is coupled to the cavity-optomechanical system. Therefore our operating frequency is continuously tunable via adjusting the coupling coefficient of the two cavities.
The rigorous resource framework of quantum coherence has been set up recently and excited a wide variety of interests. Here we show that a quantum cavity optomechanical system, as an emerging platform, can behave with a certain value of quantum coherence at a macroscopic scale. We also find that the difference between the total optomechanical coherence and the sum of the optical and the mechanical coherence just equals their mutual information. Motivated by the detection of the optomechanical entanglement, an experimentally feasible scheme to probe the optomechanical coherence is proposed.
We present an overview of experimental work to embed high-Q mesoscopic mechanical oscillators in microwave and optical cavities. Based upon recent progress, the prospect for a broad field of "cavity quantum mechanics" is very real. These systems introduce mesoscopic mechanical oscillators as a new quantum resource and also inherently couple their motion to photons throughout the electromagnetic spectrum.
A cavity optomechanical system is initiated by a radiation pressure of a cavity field onto a mirror element acting as a quantum resonator. This radiation pressure can control the thermodynamic character of the mirror to some extent, such as cooling its effective temperature. Here we show that by properly engineering the spectral density of a thermal heat bath that interacts with a quantum system, the evolution of the quantum system can be effectively turned on and off. Inside a cavity optomechanical system, when the heat bath is realized by a multi-mode oscillator modeling of the mirror, this …
We analytically study the optomechanically induced transparency (OMIT) in the $N$-cavity system with the \textit{N}th cavity driven by pump, probing laser fields and the \textit{1}st cavity coupled to mechanical oscillator. We also consider that one atom could be trapped in the \textit{i}th cavity. Instead of only illustrating the OMIT in such a system, we are interested in how the number of OMIT windows is influenced by the cavities and the atom and what roles the atom could play in different cavities. In the resolved sideband regime, we find that, the number of cavities precisely determines …
We analyze a cavity optomechanical setup, in which position of an oscillator modulates optical loss. We show that in such setup quantum limited position measurements can be performed if the external cavity coupling rate matches the optical loss rate, a condition known as "critical coupling". Additionally, under this condition the setup exhibits a number of potential benefits for practical operation including the complete absence of dynamical backaction, and hence optomechanical instability, and rejection of classical laser noise and thermal fluctuations of cavity frequency from the measurement…
The synchronization of the motion of microresonators has attracted considerable attention. Here we present theoretical methods to synchronize the chaotic motion of two optical cavity modes in an optomechanical system, in which one of the optical modes is strongly driven into chaotic motion and is coupled to another weakly-driven optical mode mediated by a mechanical resonator. In these optomechanical systems, we can obtain both complete and phase synchronization of the optical cavity modes in chaotic motion, starting from different initial states. We find that complete synchronization of chaos…
We study two-photon scattering in a mixed cavity optomechanical system, which is composed of a single-mode cavity field coupled to a single-mode mechanical oscillation via both the first-order and quadratic optomechanical interactions. By solving the scattering problem within the Wigner-Weisskopf framework, we obtain the analytical scattering state and find four physical processes associated with the two-photon scattering in this system. We calculate the two-photon scattering spectrum and find that two-photon frequency anticorrelation can be induced in the scattering process. We also establish…
We investigate the optical behavior of a single Laguerre-Gaussian cavity optomechanical system consisting of two mechanically rotating mirrors. We explore the effects of various physical parameters on the double optomechanically induced transparency (OMIT) of the system and provide a detailed explanation of the underlying physical mechanism. We show that the momentum is not the cause of the current double-OMIT phenomena; rather, it results from the orbital angular momentum between the optical field and the rotating mirrors. Additionally, the double-OMIT is simply produced using a single Laguer…
We theoretically investigate the optical and mechanical properties of a double cavity optomechanical system with one stationary and two harmonically bound mirrors. We show that it is possible for the mechanical mirrors in this system to posses negative effective mass. Working within the strong coupling and the resolved sideband regime, we show that the displacement of the middle resonator is multistable under certain constrains. We also point to the existence of optomechanically induced absorption (OMIA) and Fano resonance. Owing to the negative effective mass, our scheme can be exploited in t…
We investigate the response of a harmonically confined mirror to an optical pulse in cavity optomechanics. We show that when the pulsed coupling strength takes the form of a chirped pulse, thermal fluctuations of the mirror can be significantly transferred to the cavity field. In addition, the frequency modulation of the pulse could enable a better cooling performance by suppressing the sensitivity of the dependence of detuning and pulse areas. Using numerical investigations, we find that the pulsed-cooling is mainly limited by the cavity-field decay rate.
Optomechanical couplings involve both beam-splitter and two-mode-squeezing types of interactions. While the former underlies the utility of many applications, the latter creates unwanted excitations and is usually detrimental. In this work, we propose a simple but powerful method based on cavity parametric driving to suppress the unwanted excitation that does not require working with a deeply sideband-resolved cavity. Our approach is based on a simple observation: as both the optomechanical two-mode-squeezing interaction and the cavity parametric drive induce squeezing transformations of the r…
We propose a scheme for high quantum state transfer efficiency between two distant mechanical oscillators. Through coupling separately to two optical cavities connected by an optical fiber, two distant mechanical oscillators achieve a transfer efficiency closing to unity. In the process of analysis, we employed time-varying optomechanical coupling strength as a Gaussian pulse.
We propose a spectrometric method to detect a classical weak force acting upon the moving end mirror in a cavity optomechanical system. The force changes the equilibrium position of the end mirror, and thus the resonance frequency of the cavity field depends on the force to be detected. As a result, the magnitude of the force can be inferred by analyzing the single-photon emission and scattering spectra of the optomechanical cavity. Since the emission and scattering processes are much faster than the characteristic mechanical dissipation, the influence of the mechanical thermal noise is neglig…
We give a theoretical study of a double-cavity system in which a mechanical resonator beam is coupled to two cavity modes on both sides through radiation pressures. The indirect coupling between the cavities via the resonator sets up a correlation in the optomechanical entanglements between the two cavities with the common resonator. This correlation initiates an entanglement transfer from the intracavity photon-phonon entanglements to an intercavity photon-photon entanglement. Using numerical solutions, we show two distinct regimes of the optomechanical system, in which the indirect entanglem…
Nonreciprocal devices are indispensable for building quantum networks and ubiquitous in modern communication technology. Here, we use optomechanical interaction and linearly-coupled interaction to realize optical nonreciprocal transmission in a double-cavity optomechanical system. The scheme relies on the interference between the two interactions. We derive the essential conditions to realize perfect optical nonreciprocity in the system, and analyse the properties of optical nonreciprocal transmission and the output fields from mechanical mode. These results can be used to control optical tran…
We investigate the optomechanical photon-phonon coupling of a single light mode propagating through an array of vibrating mechanical elements. As recently shown for the particular case of a periodic array of membranes embedded in a high-finesse optical cavity [A. Xuereb, C. Genes and A. Dantan, Phys. Rev. Lett., \textbf{109}, 223601, (2012)], the intracavity linear optomechanical coupling can be considerably enhanced over the single element value in the so-called \textit{transmissive regime}, where for motionless membranes the whole system is transparent to light. Here, we extend these investi…

We study the cavity mode frequencies of a Fabry-Pérot cavity containing two vibrating dielectric membranes. We derive the equations for the mode resonances and provide approximate analytical solutions for them as a function of the membrane positions, which act as an excellent approximation when the relative and center-of-mass position of the two membranes are much smaller than the cavity length. With these analytical solutions, one finds that extremely large optomechanical coupling of the membrane relative motion can be achieved in the limit of highly reflective membranes when the two membrane…
We present an exact analytical solution of the two-photon scattering in a cavity optomechanical system. This is achieved by solving the quantum dynamics of the total system, including the optomechanical cavity and the cavity-field environment, with the Laplace transform method. The long-time solution reveals detailed physical processes involved as well as the corresponding resonant photon frequencies. We characterize the photon correlation induced in the scattering process by calculating the two-photon joint spectrum of the long-time state. Clear evidence for photon frequency anti-correlation …
An optical field inside a Fabry-Perot cavity would exhibit multistability either when an atomic medium, acting as a classical dielectric, is filled into the cavity or when the cavity becomes optomechanical where one reflecting end becomes movable. An external laser is essential in both cases to drive the cavity mode out of the zero equilibrium state. We study the equilibrium states of an atom-filled optomechanical cavity, where the atoms are considered a collective two-level systems as well as an active component that replaces the role of the driving laser. Multistability is found when the ato…
Quantum squeezing of mechanical resonator is important for studying the macroscopic quantum effects and the precision metrology of weak forces. Here we give a theoretical study of a hybrid atom-optomechanical system in which the steady-state squeezing of the mechanical resonator can be generated via the mechanical nonlinearity and cavity cooling process. The validity of the scheme is assessed by simulating the steady-state variance of the mechanical displacement quadrature numerically. The scheme is robust against dissipation of the optical cavity, and the steady-state squeezing can be effecti…
We propose a scheme that is able to generate the microwave controlled optical double optome-chanical induced transparency (OMIT) in a hybrid piezo-optomechanical cavity system, which a piezoelectric optomechanical crystal AlN-nanobeam resonator is placed in a superconducting microwave cavity, and the AlN-nanobeam resonator can be simultaneously driven by both the optical field via the radiation pressure and the microwave field via the piezoelectric interaction. We show that in the presence of a strong pumped optical field applied to the optomechanical crystal cavity through the optical wavegui…
We study an optomechanical system in which the mechanical motion of a single trapped ion is coupled to a cavity field for the realization of a strongly quantum correlated two-mode system. We show that for large pump intensities the steady state photon number exhibits bistable behaviour. We further analyze the occurrence of normal mode splitting (NMS) due to mixing of the fluctuations of the cavity field and the fluctuations of the ion motion which indicates a coherent energy exchange. We also find that in the parameter regime where NMS exists, the steady state of the system shows continuous va…
Quantum state transfer between cavities is crucial for quantum information processing and quantum computation in optomechanical systems. Here, we present the first scheme for the transitionless intra-cavity quantum state transfer based on transitionless quantum driving (TQD) algorithm in optomechanical systems. We also present a physically feasible system for the TQD process based on largely detuned optomechanical cavity. With the Gaussian time-dependence coupling strengths, our scheme can achieve the perfect quantum state transfer with no undesired transition and reduce the dependence of accu…
In a canonical optomechanical system, mechanical vibrations are dynamically encoded on an optical probe field which reciprocally exerts a backaction force. Due to the weak single photon coupling strength achieved with macroscopic oscillators, most of existing experiments were conducted with large photon numbers to achieve sizeable effects, thereby causing a dilution of the original optomechanical non-linearity. Here, we investigate the optomechanical interaction of an ultrasensitive suspended nanowire inserted in a fiber-based microcavity mode. This implementation allows to enter far into the …
Radiation pressure forces in cavity optomechanics allow for efficient cooling of vibrational modes of macroscopic mechanical resonators, the manipulation of their quantum states, as well as generation of optomechanical entanglement. The standard mechanism relies on the cavity photons directly modifying the state of the mechanical resonator. Hybrid cavity optomechanics provides an alternative approach by coupling mechanical objects to quantum emitters, either directly or indirectly via the common interaction with a cavity field mode. While many approaches exist, they typically share a simple ef…
We propose a quantum interference cooling scheme for a nano-mechanical resonator (NAMR) in a hybrid optomechanical system, where the atoms are trapped in an optomechanical cavity, coupling to an additional optical cavity. The absorption of the optomechanical resonator can be modified by quantum interference effects induced by the atom-cavity and cavity-cavity couplings independently. With the employment of the quantum interference, the desired transition for cooling is enhanced, along with the heating suppression due to the undesired transition. As a result, the NAMR vibration can be cooled do…
We propose how to achieve significantly enhanced quantum refrigeration and entanglement by coupling a pumped auxiliary cavity to an optomechanical cavity. We obtain both analytical and numerical results, and find optimal-refrigeration and -entanglement conditions under the auxiliary-cavity-assisted (ACA) mechanism. Our method leads to a giant amplification in the net refrigeration rate, and reveals that the ACA entanglement has a much stronger noise-tolerant ability in comparison with the unassisted case. By appropriately designing the ACA mechanism, an effective mechanical susceptibility can …
Cavity-optomechanics is an ideal platform for the generation non-Gaussian quantum states due to the anharmonic interaction between the light field and the mechanical oscillator; but exactly this interaction also impedes the preparation in pure states of the light field. In this paper we derive a driving protocol that helps to exploit the anharmonic interaction for state preparation, and that ensures that the state of the light field remains close-to-pure. This shall enable the deterministic preparation of photon Fock states or coherent superpositions thereof.
Optomechanical arrays made of structured flexible dielectrics are a promising system for exploring quantum and many-body optomechanical phenomena. We generalize investigations of the optomechanical properties of periodic arrays of one-dimensional scatterers in optical resonators to the case of vibrating membranes whose thickness is not necessarily small with respect to the optical wavelength of interest. The array optical transmission spectrum and its optomechanical coupling with a linear Fabry-Perot cavity field are investigated both analytically and numerically.
Amplifier is at the heart of almost all experiment carrying out the precise measurement of a weak signal. An idea amplifier should have large gain and minimum added noise simultaneously. Here, we consider the quantum measurement properties of a hybrid nonlinear cavity with the Kerr and OPA nonlinear media to amplify an input signal. We show that our hybrid-nonlinear-cavity amplifier has large gain in the single-value stable regime and achieves quantum limit unconditionally.
Cavity opto-mechanical cooling via radiation pressure dynamical backaction enables ground state cooling of mechanical oscillators, provided the laser exhibits sufficiently low phase noise. Here, we investigate and measure the excess phase noise of widely tunable external cavity diode lasers, which have been used in a range of recent nano-optomechanical experiments, including ground-state cooling. We report significant excess frequency noise, with peak values on the order of 10^7 rad^2 Hz near 3.5 GHz, attributed to the diode lasers' relaxation oscillations. The measurements reveal that even at…
We theoretically analyze the light scattering of an optomechanical cavity which strongly interacts with a single two-level system and couples simultaneously to a mechanical oscillator by radiation forces. The analysis is based on the assumptions that the system is driven at low intensity, and that the mechanical interaction is sufficiently weak, permitting a perturbative treatment. We find quantum interference in the scattering paths, which allows to suppress the Stokes-component of the scattered light. This effect can be exploited to reduce the motional energy of the mechanical oscillator.
Experiments in the field of optomechanics do not yet fully exploit the photon polarization degree of freedom. Here experimental results for an optomechanical interaction in a polarization nondegenerate system are presented and schemes are proposed for how to use this interaction to perform accurate side-band thermometry and to create novel forms of photon-phonon entanglement. The experimental system utilizes the compressive force in the mirror attached to a mechanical resonator to create a micro-mirror with two radii of curvature which leads, when combined with a second mirror, to a significan…
We present an experimental study of an optomechanical system formed by a vibrating thin semi-transparent membrane within a high-finesse optical cavity. We show that the coupling between the optical cavity modes and the vibrational modes of the membrane can be tuned by varying the membrane position and orientation. In particular we demonstrate a large quadratic dispersive optomechanical coupling in correspondence with avoided crossings between optical cavity modes weakly coupled by scattering at the membrane surface. The experimental results are well explained by a first order perturbation trea…
