We perform a general analysis on the possibility of obtaining metastable vacua with spontaneously broken N=1 supersymmetry and non-negative cosmological constant in the moduli sector of string models. More specifically, we study the condition under which the scalar partners of the Goldstino are non-tachyonic, which depends only on the Kahler potential. This condition is not only necessary but also sufficient, in the sense that all of the other scalar fields can be given arbitrarily large positive square masses if the superpotential is suitably tuned. We consider both heterotic and orientifold string compactifications in the large-volume limit and show that the no-scale property shared by these models severely restricts the allowed values for the `sGoldstino' masses in the superpotential parameter space. We find that a positive mass term may be achieved only for certain types of compactifications and specific Goldstino directions. Additionally, we show how subleading corrections to the Kahler potential which break the no-scale property may allow to lift these masses.
We study the possibility of using the D-term associated to an anomalous U(1) for the uplifting of AdS vacua (to dS or Minkowski vacua) in effective supergravities arising from string theories, particularly in the type IIB context put forward by Kachru, Kallosh, Linde and Trivedi (KKLT). We find a gauge invariant formulation of such a scenario (avoiding previous inconsistencies), where the anomalous D-term cannot be cancelled, thus triggering the uplifting of the vacua. Then, we examine the general conditions for this to happen. Finally, we illustrate the results by presenting different success…
We describe a new procedure to obtain consistent backgrounds that uplift vacua and deformations of various maximal gauged supergravities by taking a known solution and performing singular limits along the moduli space of the corresponding 4-dimensional theory. We then apply this procedure to the S^3 x H^{2,2} background that provides the uplift of 4-dimensional Minkowski vacua of maximal supergravity with gauge group [SO(4) x SO(2,2)] $\ltimes$ R^{16}. We find that the newly generated vacua are generally only locally geometric and correspond to asymmetric orbifolds, Q-flux backgrounds or combi…
We investigate supersymmetric extrema of Abelian gauged supergravity theories with non-trivial vector multiplets and 8 supercharges in four and five dimensions. The scalar fields of these models parameterize a manifold consisting of disconnected branches and restricting to the case where this manifold has a non-singular metric we show that on every branch there can be at most one extremum, which is a local maximum (for W>0) or a minimum (for W<0) of the superpotential W. Therefore, these supergravity models do not allow for regular domain wall solutions interpolating between different extrema …
We analyze the scalar potentials of maximal gauged three-dimensional supergravities which reveal a surprisingly rich structure. In contrast to maximal supergravities in dimensions D>3, all these theories admit a maximally supersymmetric (N=16) ground state with negative cosmological constant Lambda<0, except for the gauge group SO(4,4)^2, for which Lambda=0. We compute the mass spectra of bosonic and fermionic fluctuations around these vacua and identify the unitary irreducible representations of the relevant background (super)isometry groups to which they belong. In addition, we find several …
Finding vacua of supergravity theories is an outstanding problem which has been tackled in several ways, and with this work we add a new method to the puzzle. We analyse the scalar sector of maximal gauged supergravity theories in seven space-time dimensions. We look for vacua of the theory by varying the embedding tensor, instead of directly minimising the scalar potential. The set of quadratic constraints arising from this procedure has been solved by means of Evolution Strategies optimisation techniques, also adopted in Artificial Intelligence studies. We develop some methods to reconstruct…
We study flux compactifications of 10d type II supergravities to 4d Minkowski space-time, supported by parallel orientifold Op-planes with 3 $\leq$ p $\leq$ 8. With some restrictions, the 4d Ricci scalar can be written as a negative sum of squares involving BPS-like conditions. Setting all squares to zero provides automatically a solution to 10d equations of motion. This way, we characterize a broad class, if not the complete set, of Minkowski flux vacua. We also conjecture an extension to include non-geometric fluxes. None of our results rely on supersymmetry.
Recently the authors have introduced a new gauged supergravity theory with a positive definite potential in D=6, obtained through a generalised Kaluza-Klein reduction from D=7. Of particular interest is the fact that this theory admits certain Minkowski x Sphere vacua. In this paper we extend the previous results by constructing gauged supergravities with positive definitive potentials in diverse dimensions, together with their vacuum solutions. In addition, we prove the supersymmetry of the generalised reduction ansatz. We obtain a supersymmetric solution with no form-field fluxes in the new …
We study N=2 vacua in spontaneously broken N=4 electrically gauged supergravities in four space-time dimensions. We argue that the classification of all such solutions amounts to solving a system of purely algebraic equations. We then explicitly construct a special class of consistent N=2 solutions and study their properties. In particular we find that the spectrum assembles in N=2 massless or BPS supermultiplets. We show that (modulo U(1) factors) arbitrary unbroken gauge groups can be realized provided that the number of N=4 vector multiplets is large enough. Below the scale of partial super…
We study $AdS_3$ supersymmetric vacua in N=4 and N=8, three dimensional gauged supergravities, with scalar manifolds $(\frac{SO(4,4)}{SO(4)\times SO(4)})^2$ and $\frac{SO(8,8)}{SO(8)\times SO(8)}$, non-semisimple Chern-Simons gaugings $SO(4)\ltimes {\bf R}^6$ and $(SO(4)\ltimes {\bf R}^6)^2$, respectively. These are in turn equivalent to SO(4) and $SO(4)\times SO(4)$ Yang-Mills theories coupled to supergravity. For the N=4 case, we study renormalization group flows between UV and IR $AdS_3$ vacua with the same amount of supersymmetry: in one case, with (3,1) supersymmetry, we can find an analy…
A novel method is presented which employs advanced numerical techniques used in the engineering sciences to find and study the properties of nontrivial vacua of gauged extended supergravity models. While this method only produces approximate numerical data rather than analytic results, it overcomes the previous limitation of only being able to find vacua with large residual unbroken gauge symmetry groups. The effectiveness of this method is demonstrated by applying it to the technically most challenging D>=3 scalar potential -- that of SO(8) X SO(8) gauged N=16 Chern-Simons Supergravity in D=3…
We first derive a class of six-dimensional (1,0) gauged supergravities arising from threefold compactifications of F-theory with background fluxes. The derivation proceeds via the M-theory dual reduction on an SU(3)-structure manifold with four-form G_4-flux. We then show that vacuum solutions of these six-dimensional theories describes four-dimensional flat space times a compact two-dimensional internal space with additional localized sources. This induces a spontaneous compactification to four space-time dimensions and breaks the supersymmetry from N=2 to N=1, which allows the reduced theory…
We study dimensional reductions of M-theory/type II strings down to 6D in the presence of fluxes and spacetime filling branes and orientifold planes of different types. We classify all inequivalent orientifold projections giving rise to $\mathcal{N}=(1,1)$ supergravities in 6D and work out the embedding tensor/fluxes dictionary for each of those. Finally we analyze the set of vacua for the different classes of reductions and find an abundance of "no-scale" type Minkowski vacua, as well as a few novel examples of (A)dS extrema.
We first review standard results of the compactification of type IIA and IIB supergravities on a Calabi-Yau threefold and illustrate mirror symmetry. Then we compactify the same theories on a class of generalized Calabi-Yau manifolds called Half-flat. We obtain the scalar potential, and we show that type IIA on a Half-flat manifold is mirror symmetric to type IIB on a Calabi-Yau threefold with electric NS-fluxes turned on. In the last part, we compute the full equations of motion for N=4 supergravity in central charge superspace with the graviphotons identified as central charge components of …
We study a direct flux breaking scenario in $SO(32)$ heterotic string theory on general Calabi-Yau threefolds. The direct flux breaking, corresponding to hypercharge flux breaking in the F-theory context, allows us to derive the Standard Model in general Calabi-Yau compactifications. We present a general formula leading to the three generations of quarks and leptons and no chiral exotics in a background-independent way. As a concrete example, we show the three-generation model on a complete intersection Calabi-Yau threefold.
We investigate reductions of M-theory beyond twisted tori by allowing the presence of KK6 monopoles (KKO6-planes) compatible with N=4 supersymmetry in four dimensions. The presence of KKO6-planes proves crucial to achieve full moduli stabilisation as they generate new universal moduli powers in the scalar potential. The resulting gauged supergravities turn out to be compatible with a weak G2 holonomy at N=1 as well as at some non-supersymmetric AdS4 vacua. The M-theory flux vacua we present here cannot be obtained from ordinary type IIA orientifold reductions including background fluxes, D6-br…
We consider the subset of gauged maximal supergravities that consists of the SO(n+1) gauge fields A^{ij} and the scalar deformation T^{ij} of the S^n in the spherical reduction of M-theory or type IIB. We focus on the Abelian Cartan subgroup and the diagonal entries of T^{ij}. The resulting theories can be viewed as the STU models with additional hyperscalars. We find that the theories with only one or two such vectors can be generalized naturally to arbitrary dimensions. The same is true for the D=4 or 5 Einstein-Maxwell theory with such a hyperscalar. The gauge fields become massive, determi…
We describe an efficient, construction independent, algorithmic test to determine whether Calabi--Yau threefolds admit a structure compatible with the Large Volume moduli stabilization scenario of type IIB superstring theory. Using the algorithm, we scan complete intersection and toric hypersurface Calabi-Yau threefolds with $2 \leq h^{1,1} \le 4$ and deduce that 418 among 4434 manifolds have a Large Volume Limit with a single large four-cycle. We describe major extensions to this survey, which are currently underway.
We study ${\cal N}=1$ supergravity with $N>1$ chiral superfields in which one of the fields has a Kähler potential of exact no-scale type. Such systems admit de Sitter (dS) solutions in which supersymmetry is predominantly broken by the no-scale field, with only a small contribution to the breaking coming from the other fields. Metastable dS vacua of this type were recently shown to be achievable by the finetuning of an $N\times N$ sub-matrix of the Hessian matrix at the critical point. We show that perturbatively small deformations of the no-scale Minkowski vacuum into dS are only possible wh…
We explicitly construct and study the statistics of flux vacua for type IIB string theory on an orientifold of the Calabi-Yau hypersurface $P^4_{[1,1,2,2,6]}$, parametrised by two relevant complex structure moduli. We solve for these moduli and the dilaton field in terms of the set of integers defining the 3-form fluxes and examine the distribution of vacua. We compare our numerical results with the predictions of the Ashok-Douglas density $\det (-R - ω)$, finding good overall agreement in different regions of moduli space. The number of vacua are found to scale with the distance in flux space…
We analyze D = 4 compactifications of Type IIB theory with generic, geometric and non-geometric, dual fluxes turned on. In particular, we study N = 1 toroidal orbifold compactifications that admit an embedding of the untwisted sector into gauged N = 4, 8 supergravities. Truncations, spontaneous breaking of supersymmetry and the inclusion of sources are discussed. The algebraic identities satisfied by the supergravity gaugings are used to implement the full set of consistency constraints on the background fluxes. This allows to perform a generic study of N = 1 vacua and identify large regions o…
We consider four-dimensional supersymmetric compactifications of the E8 x E8 heterotic string on Calabi-Yau manifolds endowed with vector bundles with structure group SU(N) x U(1) and five-branes. After evaluating the Green-Schwarz mechanism and deriving the generalized Donaldson-Uhlenbeck-Yau condition including the five-brane moduli, we show that this construction can give rise to GUT models containing U(1) factors like flipped SU(5) or directly the Standard Model even on simply connected Calabi-Yau manifolds. Concrete realizations of three-generation models on elliptically fibered Calabi-Ya…
We use the machine learning technique to search the polytope which can result in an orientifold Calabi-Yau hypersurface and the "naive Type IIB string vacua". We show that neural networks can be trained to give a high accuracy for classifying the orientifold property and vacua based on the newly generated orientifold Calabi-Yau database with $h^{1,1}(X) \leq 6$ arXiv:2111.03078. This indicates the orientifold symmetry may already be encoded in the polytope structure. In the end, we try to use the trained neural networks model to go beyond the database and predict the orientifold signal of poly…

We study the distribution of type IIB flux vacua in the moduli space near various singular loci, e.g. conifolds, ADE singularities on P1, Argyres-Douglas point etc, using the Ashok- Douglas density det(R + omega). We find that the vacuum density is integrable around each of them, irrespective of the type of the singularities. We study in detail an explicit example of an Argyres-Douglas point embedded in a compact Calabi-Yau manifold.
We show that in a general \cal{N} = 1 supergravity with N \gg 1 scalar fields, an exponentially small fraction of the de Sitter critical points are metastable vacua. Taking the superpotential and Kahler potential to be random functions, we construct a random matrix model for the Hessian matrix, which is well-approximated by the sum of a Wigner matrix and two Wishart matrices. We compute the eigenvalue spectrum analytically from the free convolution of the constituent spectra and find that in typical configurations, a significant fraction of the eigenvalues are negative. Building on the Tracy-W…
We use the embedding tensor formalism to analyse maximally symmetric backgrounds of N=2 gauged supergravities which have the full N=2 supersymmetry. We state the condition for N=2 vacua and discuss some of their general properties. We show that if the gauged isometries leave the SU(2) R-symmetry invariant, then the N=2 vacuum must be Minkowski. This implies that there are no AdS backgrounds with eight unbroken supercharges in the effective N=2 supergravity of six-dimensional SU(3) x SU(3) structure compactifications of type II string theory and M-theory. Combined with previous results on N=1 v…
It is argued that black hole condensation can occur at conifold singularities in the moduli space of type II Calabi--Yau string vacua. The condensate signals a smooth transition to a new Calabi--Yau space with different Euler characteristic and Hodge numbers. In this manner string theory unifies the moduli spaces of many or possibly all Calabi--Yau vacua. Elementary string states and black holes are smoothly interchanged under the transitions, and therefore cannot be invariantly distinguished. Furthermore, the transitions establish the existence of mirror symmetry for many or possibly all Cala…
We discuss some basic aspects of effective field theory applied to supergravity theories which arise in the low-energy limit of string theory. Our discussion is particularly relevant to the effective field theories of no-scale supergravities that break supersymmetry, including those that appear in constructing de Sitter solutions of string theory.
We consider splitting type phase transitions between Calabi-Yau fourfolds. These transitions generalize previously known types of conifold transitions between threefolds. Similar to conifold configurations the singular varieties mediating the transitions between fourfolds connect moduli spaces of different dimensions, describing ground states in M- and F-theory with different numbers of massless modes as well as different numbers of cycles to wrap various p-branes around. The web of Calabi-Yau fourfolds obtained in this way contains the class of all complete intersection manifolds embedded in …
In this paper, we show that the presence of gauge fields in heterotic Calabi-Yau compacitifications causes the stabilisation of some, or all, of the complex structure moduli of the Calabi-Yau manifold while maintaining a Minkowski vacuum. Certain deformations of the Calabi-Yau complex structure, with all other moduli held fixed, can lead to the gauge bundle becoming non-holomorphic and, hence, non-supersymmetric. This leads to an F-term potential which stabilizes the corresponding complex structure moduli. We use 10- and 4-dimensional field theory arguments as well as a derivation based purely…
We apply deep-learning techniques to the string landscape, in particular, $SO(32)$ heterotic string theory on simply-connected Calabi-Yau threefolds with line bundles. It turns out that three-generation models cluster in particular islands specified by deep autoencoder networks and k-means++ clustering. Especially, we explore mutual relations between model parameters and the cluster with densest three-generation models (called "3-generation island"). We find that the 3-generation island has a strong correlation with the topological data of Calabi-Yau threefolds, in particular, second Chern cla…
We provide the M-theory uplift of de Sitter vacua of SO(5,3) and SO(4,4) gaugings of maximal supergravity in 4 dimensions. We find new non-compact backgrounds that are squashed hyperboloids with non-trivial flux for the 3-form potential. The uplift requires a new non-linear ansatz for the 11-dimensional metric and for the 3-form potential that reduces to the known one leading to the 7-sphere solution in the case of the SO(8) gauging.
The analysis of the extremal structure of the scalar potentials of gauged maximally extended supergravity models in five, four, and three dimensions, and hence the determination of possible vacuum states of these models is a computationally challenging task due to the occurrence of the exceptional Lie groups $E_6$, $E_7$, $E_8$ in the definition of these potentials. At present, the most promising approach to gain information about nontrivial vacua of these models is to perform a truncation of the potential to submanifolds of the $G/H$ coset manifold of scalars which are invariant under a subgr…
In this note we apply mathematical results for the volume of certain symmetric spaces to the problem of counting flux vacua in simple IIB Calabi--Yau compactifications. In particular we obtain estimates for the number of flux vacua including the geometric factor related to the Calabi-Yau moduli space, in the large flux limit, for the FHSV model and some closely related models. We see that these geometric factors give rise to contributions to the counting formula that are typically not of order one and might potentially affect the counting qualitatively in some cases. We also note, for simple f…
We present compact three-generation F-theory GUT models meeting in particular the constraints of D3-tadpole cancellation and D-term supersymmetry. To this end we explicitly construct elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau fourfolds as complete intersections in a toric ambient space. Toric methods enable us to control the singular geometry of the SU(5) GUT model. The GUT brane wraps a non-generic del Pezzo surface admitting GUT symmetry breaking via hypercharge flux. It is contractible to a curve and we demonstrate the existence of a consistent decoupling limit. We compute the Euler characteristic of …
Symmetric vacua of heterotic M-theory, characterized by vanishing cohomology classes of individual sources in the three-form Bianchi identity, are analyzed on smooth Calabi-Yau three-folds. We show that such vacua do not exist for elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau spaces. However, explicit examples are found for Calabi-Yau three-folds arising as intersections in both unweighted and weighted projective space. We show that such symmetric vacua can be combined with attractive phenomenological features such as three generations of quarks and leptons. Properties of the low energy effective actions as…
We obtain new supersymmetric flux vacua of type II supergravities on four-dimensional Minkowski times six-dimensional solvmanifolds. The orientifold O4, O5, O6, O7, or O8-planes and D-branes are localized. All vacua are in addition not T-dual to a vacuum on the torus. The corresponding solvmanifolds are proven to be Calabi-Yau, with explicit metrics. Other Ricci flat solvmanifolds are shown to be only Kähler.
We argue that accidental approximate scaling symmetries are robust predictions of weakly coupled string vacua, and show that their interplay with supersymmetry and other (generalised) internal symmetries underlies the ubiquitous appearance of no-scale supergravities in low-energy 4D EFTs. We identify 4 nested types of no-scale supergravities, and show how leading quantum corrections can break scale invariance while preserving some no-scale properties (including non-supersymmetric flat directions). We use these ideas to classify corrections to the low-energy 4D supergravity action in perturbati…
We develop a combinatorial approach to the construction of general smooth compact base surfaces that support elliptic Calabi-Yau threefolds. This extends previous analyses that have relied on toric or semi-toric structure. The resulting algorithm is used to construct all classes of such base surfaces $S$ with $h^{1, 1} (S) < 8$ and all base surfaces over which there is an elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau threefold $X$ with Hodge number $h^{2, 1} (X) \geq 150$. These two sets can be used todescribe all 6D F-theory models that have fewer than seven tensor multiplets or more than 150 neutral scala…
We study the number of flux vacua for type IIB string theory on an orientifold of the Calabi-Yau expressed as a hypersurface in WCP^4[1,1,2,2,6] by evaluating a suitable integral over the complex-structure moduli space as per the conjecture of Douglas and Ashok. We show that away from the singular conifold locus, one gets a power law, and that the (neighborhood) of the conifold locus indeed acts as an attractor in the (complex structure) moduli space. We also study (non)supersymmetric solutions near the conifold locus. In the process, we evaluate the periods near the conifold locus. We also stu…
We explicitly construct the largest dataset to date of heterotic vacua arising from stable vector bundles on Calabi-Yau threefolds. Focusing on elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau manifolds with spectral cover bundles, we show that the number of heterotic models with non-zero number of generations is finite. We classify these models according to the complex base of their Calabi-Yau threefold and to the unification gauge group that they preserve in four dimensions. This database of the order of $10^7$ models, which includes potential Standard Model candidates, is subjected to some preliminary stati…
We report on a new class of flux vacua generically present in Calabi-Yau compactifications of type-IIB string theory. At these vacua, the mass spectrum of the complete axio-dilaton/complex structure sector is given, to leading order in $α'$ and $g_s$, by a simple analytic formula independent of the choice of Calabi-Yau. We provide a method to find these vacua, and construct an ensemble of $17,054$ solutions for the Calabi-Yau hypersurface $\mathbb{WP}_{[1,1,1,6,9]}^4$, where the masses of the axio-dilaton and the $272$ complex structure fields can be explicitly computed.
We consider two-dimensional supergravity theories with four supercharges constructed from compactification of Type II string theory on a generic Calabi-Yau four-fold. In Type IIA and Type IIB cases, respectively, new superspace formulations of N=(2,2) and N=(0,4) dilaton supergravities are found and their coupling to matter multiplets is discussed.
The complete structure of the moduli space of \cys\ and the associated Landau-Ginzburg theories, and hence also of the corresponding low-energy effective theory that results from (2,2) superstring compactification, may be determined in terms of certain holomorphic functions called periods. These periods are shown to be readily calculable for a great many such models. We illustrate this by computing the periods explicitly for a number of classes of \cys. We also point out that it is possible to read off from the periods certain important information relating to the mirror manifolds.
We show how F-theory on a Calabi-Yau (n+1)-fold, in appropriate limit, can be identified as an orientifold of type IIB string theory compactified on a Calabi-Yau n-fold.
We analyze the tree-level potential of type IIB flux compactifications in warped Calabi-Yau orientifolds, in regions of weak coupling and moderately large complex structure. In this regime, one may approximate the flux-induced superpotential $W$ by a polynomial on the axio-dilaton and complex structure fields, and a significant fraction of vacua corresponds to a quadratic $W$. In this quadratic case, we argue that vacua fall into three classes, for which one can push the analytic description of their features. In particular, we provide analytic expressions for the vacuum expectation values and…
We search for phenomenologically viable vacua of IIB string flux compactifications on Calabi-Yau orientifolds with a single Kaehler modulus. We perform both analytic studies and numerical searches in order to find models with de Sitter vacua and TeV-scale SUSY particle phenomenology.
This talk adapts the available formalism to study a class of heterotic M-theory vacua with SO(10) grand unification group. Compactification to four dimensions with N = 1 supersymmetry is achieved on a torus fibered Calabi-Yau 3-fold Z = X / tau_{X} with first homotopy group pi_{1}(Z) = Z_{2}. Here X is an elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau 3-fold which admits two global sections and τ_{X} is a freely acting involution on X. The vacua in this class have net number of three generations of chiral fermions in the observable sector and may contain M5-branes in the bulk space which wrap holomorphic cur…
We have studied scalar potentials V of gauged N=8,4,2 supergravities in d=4. Extrema of these potentials may correspond to de Sitter, anti de Sitter and Minkowski vacua. All de Sitter extrema that we have studied correspond to unstable maximum/saddle points with negative curvature |V''|=2V for the fields canonically normalized at the extremum. This is equivalent to the relation |m^2| =|R|/2 = 6H^2 for the tachyonic mass m, the curvature scalar R, and the Hubble constant H. This prevents the use of de Sitter extrema for slow-roll inflation in the early universe, which would require |V''| \ll V …
We propose a scenario to stabilize all geometric moduli - that is, the complex structure, Kahler moduli and the dilaton - in smooth heterotic Calabi-Yau compactifications without Neveu-Schwarz three-form flux. This is accomplished using the gauge bundle required in any heterotic compactification, whose perturbative effects on the moduli are combined with non-perturbative corrections. We argue that, for appropriate gauge bundles, all complex structure and a large number of other moduli can be perturbatively stabilized - in the most restrictive case, leaving only one combination of Kahler moduli…
We develop a new and efficient method to systematically analyse four dimensional effective supergravities which descend from flux compactifications. The issue of finding vacua of such systems, both supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric, is mapped into a problem in computational algebraic geometry. Using recent developments in computer algebra, the problem can then be rapidly dealt with in a completely algorithmic fashion. Two main results are (1) a procedure for calculating constraints which the flux parameters must satisfy in these models if any given type of vacuum is to exist; (2) a stepwis…
We briefly review an algorithmic strategy to explore the landscape of heterotic E8 \times E8 vacua, in the context of compactifying smooth Calabi-Yau three-folds with vector bundles. The Calabi-Yau three-folds are algebraically realised as hypersurfaces in toric varieties and a large class of vector bundles are constructed thereon as monads. In the spirit of searching for Standard-like heterotic vacua, emphasis is placed on the integer combinatorics of the model-building programme.
We study heterotic vacua with four supercharges in three and four space-time dimensions and their duals obtained as M/F-theory compactified on Calabi-Yau fourfolds. We focus on their respective moduli spaces and derive the Kahler potential for heterotic vacua obtained as circle compactifications of four-dimensional N=1 heterotic theories. The Kahler potential of the dual theory is computed by compactifying 11-dimensional supergravity on Calabi-Yau fourfolds. The duality between these theories is checked for K3-fibred fourfolds and an appropriate F-theory limit is discussed.
A new framework is found for the compactification of supersymmetric string theory. It is shown that the massless spectra of Calabi--Yau manifolds of complex dimension $D_{crit}$ can be derived from noncritical manifolds of complex dimension $2k + D_{crit}$, $k\geq 1$. These higher dimensional manifolds are spaces whose nonzero Ricci curvature is quantized in a particular way. This class is more general than that of Calabi--Yau manifolds because it contains spaces which correspond to critical string vacua with no Kähler deformations, i.e. no antigenerations, thus providing mirrors of rigid Cala…
We perform a systematic search for static solutions in different sectors of 5d $N=8$ supergravities with compact and non-compact gauged R-symmetry groups, finding new and listing already known backgrounds. Due to the variety of possible gauge groups and resulting scalar potentials, the maximally symmetric vacua we encounter in these theories can be Minkowski, de Sitter, or anti-de Sitter. There exist BPS and non-BPS near-horizon geometries and full solutions with all these three types of asymptotics, corresponding to black holes, branes, strings, rings, and other black objects with more exotic…
We examine a common origin of four-dimensional flavor, CP, and $U(1)_R$ symmetries in the context of heterotic string theory with standard embedding. We find that flavor and $U(1)_R$ symmetries are unified into the $Sp(2h+2, \mathbb{C})$ modular symmetries of Calabi-Yau threefolds with $h$ being the number of moduli fields. Together with the $\mathbb{Z}_2^{\rm CP}$ CP symmetry, they are enhanced to $GSp(2h+2, \mathbb{C})\simeq Sp(2h+2, \mathbb{C})\rtimes \mathbb{Z}_2^{\rm CP}$ generalized symplectic modular symmetry. We exemplify the $S_3, S_4, T^\prime, S_9$ non-Abelian flavor symmetries on e…
In the present talk I shall review the construction of N=2 supergravity models exhibiting stable de Sitter vacua. These solutions represent the first instance of stable backgrounds with positive cosmological constant in the framework of extended supergravities (N >=2). After briefly reviewing the role of de Sitter space--times in inflationary cosmology, I shall describe the main ingredients which were necessary for the construction of gauged N=2 supergravity models admitting stable solutions of this kind.
In this article we review four-dimensional string vacua with N=2 space-time supersymmetry. In particular, we will discuss several aspects of the string-string duality between the heterotic string, compactified on $K3\times T^2$, and the type II superstring compactified on a Calabi-Yau three-fold. We investigate the massless supersymmetric spectra, showing agreement for a large class of dual heterotic/type II string pairs. Some emphasis is given to non-perturbative heterotic phenomena, such as non-perturbative transitions among different vacua and strong coupling singularities, and to their geo…
Because of the existence of rigid Calabi--Yau manifolds, mirror symmetry cannot be understood as an operation on the space of manifolds with vanishing first Chern class. In this article I continue to investigate a particular type of Kähler manifolds with positive first Chern class which generalize Calabi--Yau manifolds in a natural way and which provide a framework for mirrors of rigid string vacua. This class is comprised of a special type of Fano manifolds which encode crucial information about ground states of the superstring. It is shown in particular that the massless spectra of $(2,2)$--…
