Millimeter- and Submillimeter-Wave Observations of the OMC-2/3 Region. II. Observational Evidence for Outflow-Triggered Star Formation in the OMC-2 FIR 3/4 Region
We have carried out the observations of the OMC-2 FIR 3/4 region with the NMA and ASTE in the H$^{13}$CO$^{+}$ (1--0), $^{12}$CO (3--2, 1--0), SiO ($v$=0, $J$=2--1), CS (2--1), and CH$_3$OH ($J_K$=7$_K$--6$_K$) lines and in the 3.3 mm continuum emission. Our NMA observations in the H$^{13}$CO$^{+}$ emission have revealed 0.07 pc-scale dense gas associated with FIR 4. The $^{12}$CO (3--2,1--0) emission shows high-velocity blue and red shifted components at the both north-east and south-west of FIR 3, suggesting a molecular outflow nearly along the plane of the sky driven by FIR 3. The SiO and the CH$_{3}$OH emission are detected around the interface between the outflow and the dense gas. Furthermore, the $^{12}$CO (1--0) emission shows an L-shaped structure in the P-V diagram. These results imply presence of the shock due to the interaction between the molecular outflow driven by FIR 3 and the dense gas associated with FIR 4. Moreover, our high angular-resolution observations of FIR 4 in the 3.3 mm continuum emission have first found that FIR 4 consists of eleven dusty cores. The separation among these cores is on the same order of the Jeans length, suggesting that the fragmentation into these cores has been caused by the gravitational instability. The time scale of the fragmentation is similar to the time scale of the interaction between the molecular outflow and the dense gas. We suggest that the interaction between the molecular outflow from FIR 3 and the dense gas associated with FIR 4 triggered the fragmentation into these dusty cores, and hence the next generation the cluster formation.
Using the ASTE 10 m submillimeter telescope and the 1.4 m Infrared Survey Facility (IRSF), we performed an extensive outflow survey in the Orion Molecular Cloud -2 and -3 region. Our survey, which includes 41 potential star-forming sites, has been newly compiled using multi-wavelength data based on millimeter- and submillimeter-continuum observations as well as radio continuum observations. From the CO (3-2) observations performed with the ASTE 10 m telescope, we detected 14 CO molecular outflows, seven of which were newly identified. This higher detection rate, as compared to previous CO (1-0…
We report the results of H13CO+(1-0), CO(1-0), and 3.3 mm dust continuum observations toward one of the strongest mm-wave sources in OMC-3, MMS 7, with the Nobeyama Millimeter Array (NMA) and the Nobeyama 45 m telescope. With the NMA, we detected centrally-condensed 3.3 mm dust-continuum emission which coincides with the MIR source and the free-free jet. Our combined H13CO+ observations have revealed a disk-like envelope. The size and the mass of the disk-like envelope are 0.15 times 0.11 pc and 5.1 - 9.1 M_sun, respectively. The combined map also shows that the outer portion of the disk-like …
We have used the SHARP polarimeter at the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory to map the polarization at wavelengths of 350 and 450 micron in a ~2 x 3 arcmin region of the Orion Molecular Cloud. The map covers the brightest region of the OMC-1 ridge including the Kleinmann-Low (KL) nebula and the submillimeter source Orion-south. The ratio of 450-to-350 micron polarization is ~ 1.3 +/- 0.3 in the outer parts of the cloud and drops by a factor of 2 towards KL. The outer cloud ratio is consistent with measurements in other clouds at similar wavelengths and confirms previous measurements placing th…
We present high angular resolution (~ 1''), sensitive CO(2-1) line observations of the region OMC1 South in the Orion Nebula made using the Submillimeter Array (SMA). We detect the CO(2-1) high velocity outflow that was first found by Rodriguez-Franco et al. (1999a) with the IRAM 30 m. Our observations resolve the outflow, whose velocity-integrated emission has a deconvolved width of 0.89'' \pm 0.06'' (490 AU) and a projected length of ~ 48'' (21,000 AU) with very high redshifted and blueshifted gas with velocities of about \pm 80 km/s. This outflow is among the most collimated (~ 3 degrees) a…
We present results from a 2300 arcmin^2 survey of the Orion A molecular cloud at 450 and 850 micron using the Submillimetre Common-User Bolometer Array (SCUBA) on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. The region mapped lies directly south of the OMC1 cloud core and includes OMC4, OMC5, HH1/2, HH34, and L1641N. We identify 71 independent clumps in the 850 micron map and compute size, flux, and degree of central concentration in each. Comparison with isothermal, pressure-confined, self-gravitating Bonnor-Ebert spheres implies that the clumps have internal temperatures T_d ~ 22 +/- K and surface pre…
We present high angular resolution ($2\rlap.{''}8 \times 1\rlap.{''}7$) SiO J=5$\to$4; $v=0$ line observations of the OMC1S region in the Orion Nebula made using the Submillimeter Array (SMA). We detect for the first time a cluster of four compact bipolar and monopolar outflows that show high, moderate and low velocity gas and appear to be energized by millimeter and infrared sources associated with this region. The SiO molecular outflows are compact ($<$ 3500 AU), and in most of the cases, they are located very close to their exciting sources. We thus propose that the SiO thermal emission is …
Twenty eclipsing binaries were selected for an analysis from a huge database of observations made by the INTEGRAL/OMC camera. The photometric data were processed and analyzed, resulting in a first light-curve study of these neglected eclipsing binaries. Most of the selected systems are the detached ones. The system ET Vel was discovered to be an eccentric one. Due to missing spectroscopic study of these stars, further detailed analyses are still needed.
The first polarimetric images of the OMC-3 region of the Orion A filamentary molecular cloud are presented. Using the JCMT, we have detected polarized thermal emission at 850 microns from dust along a 6' length of the dense filament. The polarization pattern is highly ordered and is aligned with the filament throughout most of the region. The plane-of-sky magnetic field direction is perpendicular to the measured polarization. The mean percentage polarization is 4.2% with a 1 sigma dispersion of 1%. This region is part of the integral-shaped filament, and active star formation is ongoing along …
The distribution of 12C16O J=9-8 (1.037 THz) emission has been mapped in OMC-1 at 35 points with 84" resolution. This is the first map of this source in this transition and only the second velocity-resolved ground-based observation of a line in the terahertz frequency band. There is emission present at all points in the map, a region roughly 4' by 6' in size, with peak antenna temperature dropping only near the edges. Away from the Orion KL outflow, the velocity structure suggests that most of the emission comes from the OMC-1 photon-dominated region, with a typical linewidthof 3-6 km/s. Large…
We present sensitive 1.3 cm radio continuum observations of the region OMC1 South (OMC-1S) in Orion using the Very Large Array in its B configuration. We detect eleven radio sources clustered in a $30{''} \times 30{''}$ region, of which only three had been detected previously at radio wavelengths in deep 3.6 cm observations. The eight new radio sources are compact ($θ_s \leq 0\rlap.{''}1$) and we set lower limits to their spectral indices, $α> 0.8 \pm 0.3$ (with $S_ν\propto ν^α$), that suggest that they may be optically-thick H II regions. However, one of the new sources exhibits significant c…
We have conducted aperture polarimetry of ~500 stars of the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC) in M42 based on our wide-field (~8'\times 8') $JHKs$ band polarimetry. Most of the near-infrared (NIR) polarizations are dichroic, with position angles of polarization agreeing, both globally and locally, with previous far-infrared (FIR) and submillimeter observations, having taken into account the 90$^\circ $ difference in angles between dichroic absorption and emission. This is consistent with the idea that both NIR dichroic polarizations and FIR/submillimeter thermal polarizations trace the magnetic field…
We present new images of the OMC-1 molecular hydrogen outflow, made using long-slit spectroscopy in order to accurately subtract the underlying continuum emission. These images reveal an extremely clumpy, quasi-spherical inner shell that breaks up at larger radii into bow-shocks and trailing wakes in the north-west, as originally described by Allen & Burton (1993); a fainter counter-finger to the south-east is newly discovered in the present data. While the outflow appears to be broadly bipolar, this is probably due to an interaction between an initially spherical wind from the source and a la…
The Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) has been used to search for methanol maser emission at 6.7 GHz towards OMC-1. Two features peaking at 7.2 km/s and -1.1 km/s have been detected. The former has at least two components close in both velocity and position. It is located south-east of the Orion Kleinmann-Low (Orion-KL) nebula in the region of outflow traced by the 25-GHz methanol masers and the 95-GHz methanol emission. It is shown by modelling that in contrast to the widespread opinion that simultaneous masing of methanol transitions of different classes is impossible there are condit…
A statistical analysis is presented of the turbulent velocity structure in the Orion Molecular Cloud at scales ranging from 70 AU to 30000 AU. Results are based on IR Fabry-Perot interferometric observations of shock and photon-excited H2 in the K-band S(1) v=1-0 line at 2.121micron and refer to the dynamical characteristics of warm perturbed gas. Observations establish that the Larson size-linewidth relation is obeyed to the smallest scales studied here extending the range of validity of this relationship by nearly 2 orders of magnitude. The velocity probability distribution function (PDF) is…
The first unbiased surveys for high-redshift galaxies in the submillimeter (submm) and far-infrared (FIR) wavebands have been made over the last two years. When combined with the intensity of extragalactic background radiation in the same wavebands, we have a reasonable first view of the dust enshrouded Universe. Limited spatial resolution hampers the identification of the submm galaxies, and follow-up observations currently consume much larger amounts of telescope time than the initial submm-wave detections. Here the prospects for future submm/FIR surveys are discussed, highlighting the impor…
Large scale far-infrared (FIR) observations of the Orion complex at 205 and 138 micron are presented with an aim of studying the distribution of cold (< 25 K) dust. The maps in these FIR bands extend over approximately 3600 sq. arcmin and cover regions around OMC-1, 2, 3 in Orion A and NGC 2023 and NGC 2024 in Orion B. Some limited regions have also been mapped at 57 micron. A total of 15 sources in Orion A and 14 in Orion B (south) have been identified from our FIR maps. Dust temperature distribution in both Orion A and Orion B (south) have been determined reliably using the maps at 205 & 138…
We report the first detection of [CI] (3P1-3P0) emission at 609 um in a region of the Small Magellanic Cloud (N27). Environments poor in heavy elements and dust such as the SMC are thought to be dominated by photodissociation regions. This is the lowest metallicity source where submillimeter neutral carbon emission has been detected. Studying the [CI]/CO intensity ratio in several sources spanning more than an order of magnitude in metallicity, Z, we find that the [CI]/CO ratio increases for decreasing Z. The existence of such a trend points to a photodissociation origin for most of neutral ca…
We present high angular resolution 1.3 mm continuum, methyl cyanide molecular line, and 7 mm continuum observations made with the Submillimeter Array and the Very Large Array, toward the most highly obscured and southern part of the massive star forming region OMC1S located behind the Orion Nebula. We find two flattened and rotating molecular structures with sizes of a few hundred astronomical units suggestive of circumbinary molecular rings produced by the presence of two stars with very compact circumstellar disks with sizes and separations of about 50 AU, associated with the young stellar o…
Using the Submillimeter Array (SMA) we have imaged for the first time the 321.226 GHz, 10_{29}-9_{36} ortho-H2O maser emission. This is also the first detection of this line in the Cepheus A high-mass star-forming region. The 22.235 GHz, 6_{16}-5_{23} water masers were also observed with the Very Large Array 43 days following the SMA observations. Three of the nine detected submillimeter maser spots are associated with the centimeter masers spatially as well as kinematically, while there are 36 22 GHz maser spots without corresponding submillimeter masers. In the HW2 source, both the 321 GHz a…
To understand the cosmic history of element synthesis it will be important to obtain extinction-free measures of the heavy element contents of high-redshift objects and to chart two monumental events: the collapse of the first metal-free clouds to form stars, and the initial seeding of the universe with dust. The information needed to achieve these objectives is uniquely available in the far-infrared/submillimeter (FIR/SMM) spectral region. Following the Decadal Report and anticipating the development of the Single Aperture Far-IR (SAFIR) telescope and FIR/SMM interferometry, we estimate the m…
The results of the first generation of submillimeter-wave surveys have been published. The opening of this new window on the distant Universe has added considerably to our understanding of the galaxy formation process, by revealing a numerous population of very luminous distant galaxies. Most would have been very difficult to identify using other methods. The potential importance of selection effects, especially those connected with the spectral energy distributions of the detected galaxies, for the interpretation of the results are highlighted.
We report on submillimeter and infrared observations of 28 radio-selected galaxies in the Spitzer First Look Survey Verification field (FLSV). All of the radio-selected galaxies that show evidence for emission at 850um with SCUBA have Spitzer counterparts at 24um, while only half of the radio-selected galaxies without 850um emission have detectable counterparts at 24um. The data show a wide range of infrared colors (S70/S24 < 5--30, S8/S3.6 < 0.3--4), indicative of a mixture of infrared-warm AGN and cooler starburst dominated sources. The galaxies showing 850um emission have Spitzer flux densi…
Despite theoretical predictions of the existence of many submillimeter masers, and some pioneering observational discoveries over the past few decades, these lines have remained relatively unstudied due to (i) challenges associated with observing at shorter wavelength; and, (ii) lack of possibility of high (< 14'' at 345 GHz) angular resolution observations. With the advent of the SMA, the first submillimeter imaging array capable of sub-arcsecond resolution, APEX, and the promise of ALMA, opportunities are opening for performing new science with millimeter/submillmeter masers. In this talk, I…
We report the first detection of an extragalactic millimeter wavelength H2O maser at 183 GHz towards NGC 3079 using the Submillimeter Array (SMA), and a tentative submillimeter wave detection of the 439 GHz maser towards the same source using the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT). These H2O transitions are known to exhibit maser emission in star-forming regions and evolved stars. NGC 3079 is a well-studied nuclear H2O maser source at 22 GHz with a time-variable peak flux density in the range 3 -- 12 Jy. The 183 GHz H2O maser emission, with peak flux density $\sim$0.5 Jy (7$σ$ detection), al…
We report the detection of CO(3-2) emission from the submillimeter-selected luminous galaxy SMM J14011+0252. The optical counterpart of the submillimeter source has been identified as a merger system with spectral characteristics consistent with a starburst at z=2.565. The CO emission confirms the optical identification of the submillimeter source and implies a molecular gas mass of 5x10^{10}h_{75}^{-2} M(sun), after correcting for a lensing amplification factor of 2.75. The large molecular gas mass and the radio emission are consistent with the starburst interpretation of the source. These re…
Observations at far-infrared and submillimeter wavelengths promise to revolutionize the study of high redshift galaxies and AGN by providing a unique probe of the conditions within heavily extinguished regions of star formation and nuclear activity. Observational capabilities in this spectral region will expand greatly in the next decade as new observatories are developed both in space and on the ground. These facilities include the Space Infrared Telescope Facility (SIRTF), the far-infrared and submillimeter telescope (FIRST), and the millimeter array (MMA). In the longer term, the requiremen…
We give an overview of the factors shaping the ultraviolet (UV)/optical - far-infrared (FIR)/submillimeter (submm) spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of normal (non-starburst) galaxies. Particular emphasis is placed on the influen ce of the geometry of dust and stars on the propagation of light through the int erstellar medium. Although strong constraints can be placed on the amount and la rge scale distribution of dust in disks from the appearance of the galaxies in t he optical/UV range, this dust does not account for the observed amplitude and c olour of the FIR/submm radiation. Additiona…
We present imaging observations of the evolved star IRC+10216 in the CS J=14--13 line at 685.4 GHz and associated submillimeter continuum at about 2'' resolution made with the partially constructed Submillimeter Array. The CS J=14--13 line emission from the stellar envelope is well resolved both spatially and spectrally. The strong central concentration of the line emission provides direct evidence that CS is a parent molecule that forms close to the stellar photosphere, in accord with previous images of the lower excitation CS J=2--1 line and inferences from unresolved observations of vibrati…
We present deep submillimeter imaging of two spectroscopically confirmed z~6.5 Lyman-alpha emitters (LAEs) in the Subaru Deep Field. Although we reach the nominal confusion limit at 850 micron, neither LAE is detected at 850 micron nor 450 micron, thus we conclude that the LAEs do not contain large dust masses (<2.3e8 Msun and <5.7e8 Msun). The limit on their average L(FIR)/L(UV) ratios (<~35) is substantially lower than seen for most submillimeter selected galaxies at z~3, and is within the range of values exhibited by Lyman-break galaxies. We place upper-limits on their individual star forma…
We investigate what we can learn about galaxy formation and evolution from the data which will be obtained by the forthcoming large submillimeter/millimeter facilities, mainly by the Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment (ASTE) and the Atacama Large Millimeter Array/Large Millimeter and Submillimeter Array (ALMA/LMSA). We first calculate the source counts from 350 um to 3 mm using the empirical infrared galaxy number count model of Takeuchi et al. (2001). Based on the number counts, we evaluate the source confusion and determine the confusion limit at various wavebands as a function of th…
We present results from a new modelling technique which can account for the observed optical/NIR - FIR/submm spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of normal star-forming galaxies in terms of a minimum number of essential parameters specifying the star-formation history and geometrical distribution of stars and dust. The model utilises resolved optical/NIR images to constrain the old stellar population and associated dust, and geometry-sensitive colour information in the FIR/submm to constrain the spatial distributions of young stars and associated dust. It is successfully applied to the edge-on…
We highlight two recent studies of circumstellar disks in the Taurus and Orion star forming regions. Using the JCMT and CSO, we measure disk fluxes in Taurus over a wide range of submillimeter wavelengths and determine the frequency dependence of the dust opacity. We find clear evidence for a systematic change in its behavior with time, most readily explained by grain growth. Using the SMA, we observed the protoplanetary disks (proplyds) in the Orion Trapezium cluster. The combination of high resolution, high frequency, and high sensitivity that this instrument provides made it possible to res…
We report the first detection of CO(1-0) emission from a submillimeter-selected galaxy, using the Green Bank Telescope. We identify the line in the spectrum of SMM J13120+4242 as a broad emission feature at z=3.408, with Delta(V_FWHM)=1040 +/- 190 km/s. If the observed CO(1-0) line profile arises from a single object and not several merging objects, then the CO(4-3)/CO(1-0) brightness temperature ratio of ~0.26 suggests n(H_2) > 3-10 x 10^2 cm^-3 and the presence of sub-thermally excited gas. The integrated line flux implies a cold molecular gas mass M(H_2)=1.6 x 10^11 M_sun, comparable to the…
New far-infrared and submillimeter data are used to solidify and to extend to long wavelengths the empirical calibration of the infrared spectral energy distribution (SED) of normal star-forming galaxies. As was found by Dale et al. (2001), a single parameter family, characterized by f_nu(60 microns)/f_nu(100 microns), is adequate to describe the range of normal galaxy spectral energy distributions observed by IRAS and ISO from 3 to 100 microns. However, predictions based on the first generation models at longer wavelengths (122 to 850 microns) are increasingly overluminous compared to the dat…
Using the imaging polarimeter for the Submillimeter Common User Bolometric Array at the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope, we have detected polarized thermal emission at 850 micron from dust toward three star-forming core systems in the Orion B molecular cloud: NGC 2071, NGC 2024 and LBS 23N (HH 24). The polarization patterns are not indicative of those expected for magnetic fields dominated by a single field direction, and all exhibit diminished polarization percentages toward the highest intensity peaks. NGC 2024 has the most organized polarization pattern which is centered consistently along th…
We report deep K-band (18-27GHz) observations with the 100-m Green Bank Telescope of HCN(1-0) line emission towards the two submillimeter-selected galaxies (SMGs) SMMJ02399-0136 (z=2.81) and SMMJ16359+6612 (z=2.52). For both sources we have obtained spectra with channel-to-channel rms noise of <=0.5mJy, resulting in velocity-integrated line fluxes better than < 0.1 Jy km/s, although we do not detect either source. Such sensitive observations -- aided by gravitational lensing of the sources -- permit us to put upper limits of L_HCN(1-0) < 2x10^10 K km/s pc^2 on the intrinsic HCN(1-0) line lumin…
The cosmic infrared background (CIB) radiation was a long-sought fossil of energetic processes associated with structure formation and chemical evolution since the Big Bang. The COBE Diffuse Infrared Background Experiment (DIRBE) and Far Infrared Absolute Spectrophotometer (FIRAS) were specifically designed to search for this background from 1.25 microns to millimeter wavelengths. These two instruments provided high quality, absolutely calibrated all-sky maps which have enabled the first detections of the CIB, initially at far infrared and submillimeter wavelengths, and more recently in the ne…
