We study the time evolution of perturbations in spatially extended chaotic systems in the presence of quenched disorder. We find that initially random perturbations tend to exponentially localize in space around static pinning centers that are selected by the particular configuration of disorder. The spatial structure of typical perturbations, $δu(x,t)$, is analyzed in terms of the Hopf-Cole transform, $h(x,t) \equiv\ln|δu(x,t)|$. Our analysis shows that the associated surface $h(x,t)$ self-organizes into a faceted structure with scale-invariant correlations. Scaling analysis of critical roughening exponents reveals that there are three different universality classes for error propagation in disordered chaotic systems that correspond to different symmetries of the underlying disorder. Our conclusions are based on numerical simulations of disordered lattices of coupled chaotic elements and equations for diffusion in random potentials. We propose a phenomenological stochastic field theory that gives some insights on the path for a generalization of these results for a broad class of disordered extended systems exhibiting space-time chaos.
We reveal the generic characteristics of wave packet delocalization in two-dimensional nonlinear disordered lattices by performing extensive numerical simulations in two basic disordered models: the Klein-Gordon system and the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation. We find that in both models (a) the wave packet's second moment asymptotically evolves as $t^{a_m}$ with $a_m \approx 1/5$ ($1/3$) for the weak (strong) chaos dynamical regime, in agreement with previous theoretical predictions [S.~Flach, Chem.~Phys.~{\bf 375}, 548 (2010)], (b) chaos persists, but its strength decreases in time $t…
Do nonlinear waves destroy Anderson localization? Computational and experimental studies yield subdiffusive nonequilibrium wave packet spreading. Chaotic dynamics and phase decoherence assumptions are used for explaining the data. We perform a quantitative analysis of the nonequilibrium chaos assumption, and compute the time dependence of main chaos indicators - Lyapunov exponents and deviation vector distributions. We find a slowing down of chaotic dynamics, which does not cross over into regular dynamics up to the largest observed time scales, still being fast enough to allow for a thermaliz…
The impact of quenched disorder on deterministic diffusion in chaotic dynamical systems is studied. As a simple example, we consider piecewise linear maps on the line. In computer simulations we find a complicated scenario of multiple suppression and enhancement of normal diffusion under variation of the perturbation strength. These results are explained by a theoretical argument showing that the oscillations emerge as a direct consequence of the unperturbed diffusion coefficient, which is known to be a fractal function of a control parameter.
General theoretic approach to classical Loschmidt echoes in chaotic systems with many degrees of freedom is developed. For perturbations which affect essentially all degrees of freedom we find a doubly exponential decay with the rate determined by the largest Lyapunov exponent. The scaling of the decay rate on the perturbation strength depends on whether the initial phase-space density is continuous or not.
We study the characteristics of chaos evolution of initially localized energy excitations in the one-dimensional nonlinear disordered Klein-Gordon lattice of anharmonic oscillators, by computing the time variation of the fundamental frequencies of the motion of each oscillator. We focus our attention on the dynamics of the so-called `weak' and `strong chaos' spreading regimes [2010, EPL 91 30001], for which Anderson localization is destroyed. Based on the fact that large variations of the fundamental frequencies denote strong chaotic behavior, we show that in both regimes chaos is more intense…
We present a theory of quantum work statistics in generic chaotic, disordered Fermi liquid systems within a driven random matrix formalism. By extending P. W. Anderson's orthogonality determinant formula to compute quantum work distribution, we find that work statistics is non-Gaussian and is characterized by a few dimensionless parameters. At longer times, quantum interference effects become irrelevant and the quantum work distribution is well-described in terms of a purely classical ladder model with a symmetric exclusion process in energy space, while bosonization and mean field methods pro…
We address the problem of chaotic temperature dependence in disordered glassy systems at equilibrium by following states of a random-energy random-entropy model in temperature; of particular interest are the crossings of the free-energies of these states. We find that this model exhibits strong, weak or no temperature chaos depending on the value of an exponent. This allows us to write a general criterion for temperature chaos in disordered systems, predicting the presence of temperature chaos in the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick and Edwards-Anderson spin glass models, albeit when the number of spin…
Integrable non-linear Hamiltonian systems perturbed by additive noise develop a Lyapunov instability, and are hence chaotic, for any amplitude of the perturbation. This phenomenon is related, but distinct, from Taylor's diffusion in hydrodynamics. We develop expressions for the Lyapunov exponents for the cases of white and colored noise. The situation described here being `multi-resonance' -- by nature well beyond the Kolmogorov-Arnold-Moser regime, it offers an analytic glimpse on the regime in which many near-integrable systems, such as some planetary systems, find themselves in practice. We…
Defect-chaos is studied numerically in coupled Ginzburg-Landau equations for parametrically driven waves. The motion of the defects is traced in detail yielding their life-times, annihilation partners, and distances traveled. In a regime in which in the one-dimensional case the chaotic dynamics is due to double phase slips, the two-dimensional system exhibits a strongly ordered stripe pattern. When the parity-breaking instability to traveling waves is approached this order vanishes and the correlation function decays rapidly. In the ordered regime the defects have a typical life-time, whereas …
We study effects of perturbation Hamiltonian to quantum spin systems which can include quenched disorder. Model-independent inequalities are derived, using an additional artificial disordered perturbation. These inequalities enable us to prove that the variance of the perturbation Hamiltonian density vanishes in the infinite volume limit even if the artificial perturbation is switched off. This theorem is applied to spontaneous symmetry breaking phenomena in a disordered classical spin model, a quantum spin model without disorder and a disordered quantum spin model.
We study the effects of local perturbations on the dynamics of disordered fermionic systems in order to characterize time-irreversibility. We focus on three different systems, the non-interacting Anderson and Aubry-André-Harper (AAH-) models, and the interacting spinless disordered t-V chain. First, we consider the effect on the full many-body wave-functions by measuring the Loschmidt echo (LE). We show that in the extended/ergodic phase the LE decays exponentially fast with time, while in the localized phase the decay is algebraic. We demonstrate that the exponent of the decay of the LE in th…
We show that macroscopic nonintegrable lattices of spins 1/2, which are often considered to be chaotic, do not exhibit the basic property of classical chaotic systems, namely, exponential sensitivity to small perturbations. We compare chaotic lattices of classical spins and nonintegrable lattices of spins 1/2 in terms of their magnetization responses to imperfect reversal of spin dynamics known as Loschmidt echo. In the classical case, magnetization exhibits exponential sensitivity to small perturbations of Loschmidt echoes, which is characterized by twice the value of the largest Lyapunov exp…
We consider the ordered and disordered dynamics for monolayers of rolling self-interacting particles with an offset center of mass and a non-isotropic inertia tensor. The rolling constraint is considered as a simplified model of a very strong, but rapidly decaying bond with the surface, preventing application of the standard tools of statistical mechanics. We show the existence and nonlinear stability of ordered lattice states, as well as disturbance propagation through and chaotic vibrations of these states. We also investigate the dynamics of disordered gas states and show that there is a su…
We study spectral properties and the dynamics after a quench of one-dimensional spinless fermions with short-range interactions and long-range random hopping. We show that a sufficiently fast decay of the hopping term promotes localization effects at finite temperature, which prevents thermalization even if the classical motion is chaotic. For slower decays, we find that thermalization does occur. However, within this model, the latter regime falls in an unexpected universality class, namely, observables exhibit a power-law (as opposed to an exponential) approach to their thermal expectation v…
We consider a chain of interacting fermions with random disorder that was intensively studied in the context of many-body localization. We show that only a small fraction of the two-body interaction represents a true local perturbation to the Anderson insulator. While this true perturbation is nonzero at any finite disorder strength W, it decreases with increasing W. This establishes a view that the strongly disordered system should be viewed as a weakly perturbed integrable model, i.e., a weakly perturbed Anderson insulator. As a consequence, the latter can hardly be distinguished from a stri…
The dynamics of chaotic systems are, by definition, exponentially sensitive to initial conditions and may appear rather random. In this work, we explore relations between the chaotic dynamics of an observable and the dynamics of information (entropy) contained in this observable, focussing on a disordered metal coupled to a dissipative, e.g. phononic, bath. The chaotic dynamics is characterised by Lyapunov exponents $λ$, the rates of growth of out-of-time order correlators (OTOCs), quantities of the form $\langle[\hat A(t),\hat B(0)]^{2}\rangle\propto\exp(2λt)$, where $\hat A$ and $\hat B$ are…
