High-dispersion time-resolved spectroscopy of the unique magnetic cataclysmic variable AE Aqr is presented. A radial velocity analysis of the absorption lines yields K_2 = 168.7+/- 1 km/s. Substantial deviations of the radial velocity curve from a sinusoid are interpreted in terms of intensity variations over the secondary star's surface. A complex rotational velocity curve as a function of orbital phase is detected which has a modulation frequency of twice the orbital frequency, leading to an estimate of the binary inclination angle that is close to 70^o. The minimum and maximum rotational velocities are used to indirectly derive a mass ratio of q= 0.6 and a radial velocity semi-amplitude of the white dwarf of K_1 = 101+/-3 km/s. We present an atmospheric temperature indicator, based on the absorption line ratio of Fe I and Cr I lines, whose variation indicates that the secondary star varies from K0 to K4 as a function of orbital phase. The ephemeris of the system has been revised, using more than one thousand radial velocity measurements, published over nearly five decades. From the derived radial velocity semi-amplitudes and the estimated inclination angle, we calculate that the masses of the stars are M_1 = 0.63+/-0.05M_sun; M_2 = 0.37+/-0.04 M_sun, and their separation is a = 2.33+/-0.02R_sun. Our analysis indicates the presence of a late-type star whose radius is larger, by a factor of nearly two, than the radius of a normal main sequence star of its mass. Finally we discuss the possibility that the measured variations in the rotational velocity, temperature, and spectral type of the secondary star as functions of orbital phase may, like the radial velocity variations, be attributable to regions of enhanced absorption on the star's surface.
[Abridged] We report on time-resolved optical spectroscopy of ten non-eclipsing nova-like cataclysmic variables in the orbital period range between 3 and 4 hours. Of the ten systems so far observed, HL Aqr, BO Cet, AH Men, V380 Oph, AH Pic, and LN UMa are identified as new members of the SW Sex class. We present improved orbital period measurements for HL Aqr (Porb = 3.254 +- 0.001 h) and V380 Oph (Porb = 3.69857 +- 0.00002 h). BO Cet and V380 Oph exhibit emission-line flaring with periodicities of 20 min and 47 min, respectively. The Halpha line of HL Aqr shows significant blueshifted absorpt…
We present the results of a VLA search for HI emission in the circumstellar envelopes of five nearby AGB stars: RS Cnc, IRC+10216, EP Aqr, R Cas, and R Aqr. We have detected emission coincident in both position and velocity with RS Cnc, implying that the emission arises from its extended envelope. For R Cas, we detected weak emission that peaks at the stellar systemic velocity and overlaps with the location of its circumstellar dust shell and thus is probably related to the star. Toward IRC+10216 and EP Aqr, we detected multiple, arcminute-scale HI emission features at velocities consistent wi…
We present 14 nights of medium resolution (1-2Å) spectroscopy of the eclipsing cataclysmic variable UU Aquarii obtained during a high accretion state in 1995 August-October. UU Aqr appears to be an SW Sextantis star, as noted by Baptista, Steiner, & Horne (1996), and we discuss its spectroscopic behavior in the context of the SW Sex phenomenon. Emission line equivalent width curves, Doppler tomography, and line profile simulation provide evidence for the presence of a bright spot at the impact site of the accretion stream with the edge of the disk, and a non-axisymmetric, vertically- and azimu…
We consider possible implications if the recent and disconcordant measurements of D/H in quasar absorption systems are real and indicate a dispersion in D/H in these primitive systems. In particular we examine the option that the D/H abundances in these systems, which are separated on cosmological scales, are primordial, implying a large scale inhomogeneity in the baryon content of the Universe. We show that such large scale isocurvature perturbations are excluded by current cosmic microwave background observations. We also discuss the implications of a smaller (in amplitude) inhomogeneity on …
We present the results of recent multicolor photometric and high-resolution spectroscopic observations of the bright Be star Pi Aquarii. Observational data collected from the literature were used to study the star's variations over the last four decades. The star is identified with the IR sources F22227+0107 in the IRAS Faint Point Source catalog and MSX5_G066.0066-44.7392 in the MSX catalog. The variations in near-IR brightness of Pi Aqr are found to be among the largest reported for Be stars. Since 1996, the star has shown only weak signs of circumstellar emission, which has allowed us to re…
Using the IUE data archive, we have examined the SWP-camera echellograms of 74 B0--B2.5e stars for statistically significant fluctuations in the He II ("Halpha") 1640A line profile. In this sample we found that the HeII line is occasionally variable in 10 stars over short to long timescales. The HeII-variable stars discovered are lambda Eri, omega Ori, mu Cen, 6 Cep, HD 67536, psi-1 Ori, eta Cen, pi Aqr, 2 Vul, and 19 Mon. The most frequent two types of variability are an extended blue wing absorption and a weakening of the line along the profile. Other types of variability are a weak emission…
We present absorption-line strengths on the Lick/IDS line-strength system of 381 galaxies and 38 globular clusters in the 4000--6400 Åregion. All galaxies were observed at Lick Observatory between 1972 and 1984 with the Cassegrain Image Dissector Scanner spectrograph, making this study one of the largest homogeneous collections of galaxy spectral line data to date. We also present a catalogue of nuclear velocity dispersions used to correct the absorption-line strengths onto the stellar Lick/IDS system. Extensive discussion of both random and systematic errors of the Lick/IDS system is provided…
We present new GHRS observations of Lyman alpha absorption lines associated with a group of galaxies towards the QSO 1545+2101. We have identified eight distinct Lyman alpha absorption features in the spectrum of QSO 1545+2101 at a mean redshift of z=0.2648 with a velocity dispersion of 163 km/s. A group of galaxies is detected in the vicinity of this QSO at a mean redshift of z=0.2645 and velocity dispersion 239 km/s. The identification of discrete absorption systems indicates that they arise in clouds of neutral hydrogen rather than in a diffuse intragroup medium. Our analysis suggests that …
We have carried out a sensitive high-latitude (|b| > 15deg.) HI 21cm-line absorption survey towards 102 sources using the GMRT. With a 3-sigma detection limit in optical depth of ~0.01, this is the most sensitive HI absorption survey. We detected 126 absorption features most of which also have corresponding HI emission features in the Leiden Dwingeloo Survey of Galactic neutral Hydrogen. The histogram of random velocities of the absorption features is well-fit by two Gaussians centered at V(lsr) ~ 0 km/s with velocity dispersions of 7.6 +/- 0.3 km/s and 21 +/- 4 km/s respectively. About 20% of…
(Abridged) We have used the VLA to search for neutral atomic hydrogen in the circumstellar envelopes of five AGB stars. We have detected HI 21-cm emission coincident in both position and velocity with the semi-regular variable RS Cnc. The emission comprises a compact, slightly elongated feature centered on the star with a mean diameter ~82'' (1.5e17 cm), plus an additional filament extending ~6' to the NW. This filament suggests that a portion of the mass loss is highly asymmetric. We estimate MHI=1.5e-3 Msun and M_dot~1.7e-7 Msun/yr. Toward R Cas, we detect weak emission that peaks at the ste…
We report on absorption-line Fabry-Perot spectroscopy of the SB0 galaxy NGC 7079. Our data allow us to determine velocity and dispersion maps, which compare well with the results of slit observations. Our goals are to obtain a bar pattern speed and to determine the velocity ellipsoid as a function of radius; this is work in progress.
We have obtained spectra and measured the stellar kinematics in a sample of 25 nearby early-type galaxies (with velocity dispersions from less than 100 km/s to over 300 km/s) using the near-infrared CO absorption bandhead at 2.29 microns. Our median uncertainty for the dispersions is ~10%. We examine the effects of dust on existing optical kinematic measurements. We find that the near-infrared velocity dispersions are in general smaller than optical velocity dispersions, with differences as large as 30%. The median difference is 11% smaller, and the effect is of greater magnitude for higher di…
We present the first grating-resolution X-ray spectra of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 3783, obtained with the High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer on the Chandra X-ray Observatory. These spectra reveal many narrow absorption lines from the H-like and He-like ions of O, Ne, Mg, Si, S and Ar, as well as FeXVII-FeXXI L-shell lines. We have also identified several weak emission lines, mainly from O and Ne. The absorption lines are blueshifted by a mean velocity of approximately 440\pm200 km/s and are not resolved, indicating a velocity dispersion within the absorbing gas of a few hundred km/s…
Observations show that there is significant clustering of QSO metal absorption lines within the range of velocity dispersion between 200km/sec and 600 km/sec. With a reasonable supernova rate, it is shown that high velocity gases driven by SNe and/or strong stellar winds could explain the clustered absorptions, provided that QSO metal-line absorbers are galactic halos or dwarf galaxies. Rich clusters of galaxies, on the other hand, cannot yield the observed clustering of QSO metal absorption lines.
We use Fabry-Perot absorption line imaging spectroscopy to measure radial velocities using the Ca II 8542 line in 3360 stars towards three lines of sight in the Milky Way's bar: Baade's Window and offset position at (l,b) ~ (+-5.0, -3.5). This sample includes 2488 bar red clump giants, 339 bar M/K-giants, and 318 disk main sequence stars. We measure the first four moments of the stellar velocity distribution of the red clump giants, and find it to be symmetric and flat-topped. We also measure the line-of-sight average velocity and dispersion of the red clump giants as a function of distance in…
(ABRIDGED) We present stellar velocity dispersion (sigma*) measurements for a significant sample of 40 broad-line (Type 1) active galaxies for use in testing the well-known relation between black hole mass and stellar velocity dispersion. The objects are selected to contain Ca II triplet, Mgb triplet, and Ca H+K stellar absorption features in their optical spectra so that we may use them to perform extensive tests of the systematic biases introduced by both template mismatch and contamination from the active galactic nucleus (AGN). We use the Ca II triplet as a benchmark to evaluate the utilit…
We present here new GHRS observations of Lyman-alpha absorption lines associated with groups or clusters toward the QSOs 1545+2101 and 0850+4400. In the first case we have identified at least eight distinct Lyman-alpha absorption features, with a mean redshift of <z> = 0.2648 \pm 0.0002 and a velocity dispersion of 163 \pm 57 km/s. We have also identified a group or cluster of galaxies in the vicinity of this QSO with a mean redshift of <z> = 0.2643 \pm 0.0004 and velocity dispersion 223 \pm 91 km/s . The spectrum of QSO 0850+4400, of poorer quality, reveals two Lyman-alpha absorption features…
A sample of 59 sight lines to reddened Galactic OB stars was examined for correlations of the strength of the CO Fourth Positive (A - X) absorption band system with the ultraviolet interstellar extinction curve parameters. We used archival high-dispersion NEWSIPS IUE spectra to measure the CO absorption for comparison to parametric fits of the extinction curves from the literature. A strong correlation with the non-linear far-UV curvature term was found with greater absorption, normalized to E(B-V), being associated with more curvature. A weaker trend with the linear extinction term was also f…
The correlation between the Mg absorption index and the velocity dispersion (sigma) of local elliptical galaxies is very tight. Because the Mg absorption depends on both metallicity and age of the underlying stellar population the observed Mg-sigma relation constrains the possible variation in metallicity and age for a given velocity dispersion. For a time interval with no change in metallicity any variation of the Mg index is caused only by the aging of the stars. We have measured the Mg absorption and velocity dispersion of ellipticals in three clusters at a redshift of z=0.37 and establishe…
We report sub-arcsecond resolution X-ray imaging spectroscopy of the low luminosity active galactic nucleus of NGC 4258 and its immediate surroundings with the Chandra X-ray Observatory. NGC 4258 was observed four times, with the first two observations separated by one month, followed over a year later by two consecutive observations. The spectrum of the nucleus is well described by a heavily absorbed, hard X-ray power law of variable luminosity, plus a constant, thermal soft X-ray component. We do not detect an iron K alpha emission line with the upper limit to the equivalent width of a narro…
The [O II] lambda3727 emission lines and absorption features from stellar Balmer and Ca H&K lines are the most accessible kinematic diagnotics in galaxies at z~1. We investigate the kinematics of 22 local late-type galaxies using these spectral features and we compare the results to 21-cm neutral hydrogen spectra in order to assess the utility of each diagnostic for measuring galaxy masses. In order to simulate data at high redshift where only 1-dimensional velocity profiles are normally available, we study spatially integrated as well as spatially-resolved spectra. Although the studied galaxi…
X-ray absorption lines of highly-ionized species such as OVII at about zero redshift have been firmly detected in the spectra of several active galactic nuclei. However, the location of the absorbing gas remains a subject of debate. To separate the Galactic and extragalactic contributions to the absorption, we have obtained Chandra LETG-HRC and FUSE observations of the black hole X-ray binary LMC X--3. A joint analysis of the detected OVII and Ne IX Kalpha lines, together with the non-detection of the OVII Kbeta and OVIII Kalpha lines, gives the measurements of the temperature, velocity disper…
This thesis presents the results of a high spectral resolution study of the circumstellar (CS) gas around the intermediate mass, pre-main sequence UXOR stars BF Ori, SV Cep, UX Ori, WW Vul and XY Per. The results are based on a set of 38 echelle spectra covering the spectral range 3800-5900 Angstroms, monitoring the stars on time scales of months, days and hours. All spectra show a large number of Balmer and metallic lines with variable blueshifted and redshifted absorption features superimposed to the photospheric stellar spectra. Synthetic Kurucz models are used to estimate rotational veloci…
A high latitude HI 21 cm-line absorption survey toward extragalactic sources was recently completed using the Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope (GMRT). A total of 104 sources with mod(b) > 15 deg. and with a 21 cm flux density greater than 1 Jy were observed for about 120 hours. With an optical depth detection limit of about 0.01 this is the most sensitive high-latitude survey as yet. Most of the detected HI 21 cm-line absorption features belong to a population with a velocity dispersion of about 7.6 km/s. These are the 'standard' HI clouds and have been well-studied for decades. However, we als…
