We present a multi-wavelength study of embedded massive clusters in the nearby (3.9 Mpc) starburst galaxy NGC 4449 in an effort to uncover the earliest phases of massive cluster evolution. By combining high resolution imaging from the radio to the ultraviolet, we reveal these clusters in the process of emerging from their gaseous and dusty birth cocoons. We use Very Large Array (VLA) observations at centimeter wavelengths to identify young clusters surrounded by ultra-dense HII regions, detectable via their production of thermal free-free radio continuum. Ultraviolet, optical and infrared observations are obtained from the Hubble and Spitzer Space Telescope archives for comparison. We detect 39 compact radio sources towards NGC 4449 at 3.6 cm using the highest resolution (1.3") and sensitivity (RMS ~ 12 uJy) VLA image of the galaxy to date. We reliably identify 13 thermal radio sources and their physical properties are derived using both nebular emission from the HII regions and SED fitting to the stellar continuum. These radio detected clusters have ages < 5 Myr and stellar masses of order 10^4 Msun. The measured extinctions are quite low: 12 of the 13 thermal radio sources have Av < 1.5, while the most obscured source has Av ~ 4.3. By combining results from the nebular and stellar emission, we find an I-band excess that is anti-correlated with cluster age and an apparent mass-age correlation. Additionally, we find evidence that local processes such as supernovae and stellar winds are likely playing an important role in triggering the current bursts of star formation within NGC 4449.
We present color-magnitude diagrams of the open cluster NGC 2420, obtained from Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) ultraviolet images in FUV and NUV bands and Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) u,g,r,i,z photometry. Our goal is to search for and characterize hot evolved stars and peculiar objects in this open cluster, as part of a larger project aimed to study a number of open clusters in the Milky Way with GALEX and ground-based data.
Recent ultraviolet and X-ray observations suggest that the Fe/O ratio in the NLR gas in NGC 1068 is abnormally high. The X-ray analysis, which is presented elsewhere, suggests a large Fe/H and the data shown and discussed here, in particular the extremely weak Oiii] 1664 line, argue for small O/N and O/C. Models to support this claim are shown and discussed. They include improved reddening estimates, dusty and dust-free calculations, and a range of abundances. The anomelous composition makes NGC 1068 unique among Seyfert galaxies and an unusual laboratory for investigating metal enrichment and…
We present ultraviolet emission-line maps of the narrow-line region (NLR) of NGC 1068. The maps span 115--318 nm, the biconical ionization cone, several posited jet/ISM interactions, and the compact knots whose optical spectra we reported previously resemble kinematically the quasar Associated Absorption Line systems. Across the NLR, we find that ultraviolet flux ratios are consistent with photoionization, not shock excitation, even for gas blueshifted abruptly to 3000 \kms relative to galaxy systemic velocity or for gas projected near the radio jet. The knots may be radiatively accelerated, p…
We analyze ultraviolet (~1500 A) images of the old open clusters M67, NGC 188, and NGC 6791 obtained with Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UIT) during the second flight of the Astro observatory in March 1995. Twenty stars are detected on the UIT image of M67, including 11 blue stragglers, seven white dwarf candidates, and the yellow giant -- white dwarf binary S1040. The ultraviolet photometry of the blue stragglers F90 (S975) and F131 (S1082) suggests that these stars have hot subluminous companions. We present a semi-empirical integrated ultraviolet spectrum of M67, and show that the blue stra…
We have obtained high resolution UV images with the HST+WFPC2 of the central region of the dwarf elliptical galaxy NGC 205. Our images reveal that many of the hot UV stars previously detected and studied from the ground are actually multiple systems, open clusters and star associations. We have performed photometry of two such clusters and we find our data are consistent with stellar ages of 50 and 100 Myr, respectively. From the number of massive stars in NGC 205 we estimate that the star formation episode in this galaxy has turned ~1,000 Msolar of gas into stars over the last 100 Myr.
We observed the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 3516 twice during the flight of Astro-2 using the Hopkins Ultraviolet Telescope in March 1995. Simultaneous X-ray observations were performed with ASCA. Our far-ultraviolet spectra cover the spectral range 820-1840 A with a resolution of 2-4 A. No significant variations were found between the two observations. The total spectrum shows a red continuum, $f_ν\sim ν^{-1.89}$, with an observed flux of $\rm 2.2 \times 10^{-14}~erg~cm^{-2}~s^{-1}~Å^{-1}$ at 1450 A, slightly above the historical mean. Intrinsic absorption in Lyman $β$ is visible as well as absorpti…
We have studied the physical conditions in the central 300 pc of the proto-typical starburst galaxy NGC 7714. Our analysis is based on ultraviolet spectroscopy with the HST+GHRS and ground-based optical observations. The data are interpreted using evolutionary models optimized for young starburst regions. The massive stellar population is derived in a self-consistent way using the continuum and stellar absorption lines in the ultraviolet and the nebular emission line optical spectrum. The central starburst has an age of about 4.5 Myr, with little evidence for an age spread. Wolf-Rayet features …
The reflection nebula NGC 2023 was observed by a rocket-borne long-slit imaging spectrograph in the 900 -- 1400 Angstrom bandpass on 2000 February 11. A spectrum of the star, as well as that of the nebular scattered light, was recorded. Through the use of a Monte Carlo modeling process, the scattering properties of the dust were derived. The albedo is low, 0.2 -- 0.4, and decreasing toward shorter wavelengths, while the phase function asymmetry parameter is consistent with highly forward-scattering grains, g~0.85. The decrease in albedo, while the optical depth increases to shorter wavelengths…
Recent far-UV (FUV) and near-UV (NUV) observations of the nearby galaxy NGC4625 made by the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) show the presence of an extended UV disk reaching 4 times the optical radius of the galaxy. The UV-to-optical colors suggest that the bulk of the stars in the disk of NGC4625 are currently being formed, providing a unique opportunity to study today the physics of star formation under conditions similar to those when the normal disks of spiral galaxies like the Milky Way first formed. In the case of NGC4625, the star formation in the extended disk is likely to be trigger…
We have obtained a Hubble Space Telescope ultraviolet image and spectrum of the nearby Wolf-Rayet galaxy NGC 1741. The spatial morphology from the Faint Object Camera image is dominated by two main starburst centers, each being about 100 times as luminous as 30 Doradus. Both starburst centers are composed of several intense knots of recent star formation. A Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph spectrum of a portion of the southern starburst center is consistent with a population of young stars following a Salpeter IMF for masses above approx 15 Msun (lower mass stars may also be present), and …
Imaging studies have shown that about 25% of LINER galaxies display a compact nuclear UV source. As part of a program to study the nature of LINERs and their connection to the active galaxy phenomenon, we compare the HST ultraviolet (1150-3200 Ang) spectra of seven such UV-bright LINERs. Data for three of the galaxies (NGC 404, NGC 4569, and NGC 5055) are presented for the first time, while data for four others (M81, NGC 4594, NGC 4579, and NGC 6500) have been recently published. The spectra of NGC 404, NGC 4569, and NGC 5055 show clear absorption-line signatures of massive stars, indicating a…
There are extraordinarily few far ultraviolet observations of RR Lyrae stars in the literature. We present Hubble Space Telescope FUV (~1600 A) imaging of the core of the globular cluster NGC 1851. Eleven new variables whose light curves are consistent with those of RR Lyr stars are discovered, increasing the total number of RR Lyr known in this cluster by a substantial amount. In agreement with basic physical theory, the observed amplitude of the variables in the FUV is enormous compared with the century of past optical observations, ranging up to 4 mag. HST STIS FUV observations of cluster c…
We present a reanalysis of far-ultraviolet (FUV) observations of the globular cluster NGC 2808 obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope. These data were first analyzed by Brown and coworkers, with an emphasis on the bright, blue horizontal branch (HB) stars in this cluster. Here, our focus is on the population of fainter FUV sources, which include white dwarfs (WDs), blue stragglers (BSs) and cataclysmic variables (CVs). We have therefore constructed the deepest FUV-NUV colour-magnitude diagram of NGC 2808 and also searched for variability among our FUV sources. Overall, we have found approx. …
We present and discuss HST (WFPC2 and FOC) images and UV GHRS spectra plus ground-based near UV through to near IR spectra of three Seyfert 2 nuclei (NGC 7130, NGC 5135 and IC 3639). These galaxies, together to Mrk 477, were selected from a bigger sample that comprises the 20 brightest Seyfert 2 nuclei, with the goal to study the origin of the UV-optical-near IR featureless continuum in Seyfert 2 nuclei. These four galaxies have bolometric luminosities, as computed with the four IRAS bands, of 10^11 Lsol. They are close enough to be resolved with HST the nuclear zone. This makes these Seyfert …
We present three Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) observations of the Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC4051. The most prominent features in the far-ultraviolet (FUV) spectrum are the OVI emission and absorption lines and the HI Lyman series absorption lines which are detected up to the Lyman edge. We also identify weak emission from NIII, CIII, and HeII. The CIII line shows absorption while none is detected in the NIII and HeII lines. In HI and CIII we detect two main absorption systems at outflow velocities of -50+/-30 and -240+/-40 km/s, as well as a possible third one at ~ -450 …
We present ultraviolet spectra of the dwarf Seyfert 1 nucleus of NGC 4395, obtained with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) and the Hubble Space Telescope's Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph at velocity resolutions of 7 to 15 km/sec. We confirm our earlier claim of C IV absorption in low-resolution UV spectra and detect a number of other absorption lines with lower ionization potentials. In addition to the Galactic lines, we identify two kinematic components of absorption that are likely to be intrinsic to NGC 4395. We consider possible origins of the absorption, including th…
We present the results from the analysis of optical spectra of 31 Halpha-selected regions in the extended UV (XUV) disks of M83 (NGC5236) and NGC4625 recently discovered by GALEX. The spectra were obtained using IMACS at Las Campanas Observatory 6.5m Magellan I telescope and COSMIC at the Palomar 200-inch telescope, respectively for M83 and NGC4625. The line ratios measured indicate nebular oxygen abundances (derived from the R23 parameter) of the order of Zsun/5-Zsun/10. For most emission-line regions analyzed the line fluxes and ratios measured are best reproduced by models of photoionizatio…
We have obtained Hubble Space Telescope WFPC2 2200 A and optical V-band images of 20 low-luminosity active galactic nuclei, most of which are spectroscopically classified as LINERs, in order to search for a possible photoionizing continuum. Six (30%) of the galaxies are detected in the UV. Two of the detected galaxies (NGC 3642 and NGC 4203) have compact, unresolved nuclear UV sources, while the remaining four UV sources (in NGC 4569, NGC 5005, NGC 6500, and NGC 7743) are spatially extended. Combining our sample with that of Maoz et al. (1995), we find that the probability of detection of a nu…
We present far-ultraviolet spectra of the Seyfert 1.5 galaxy NGC 5548 obtained in 2000 June with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE). Our data span the observed wavelength range 915--1185 Angstroms at a resolution of 20 km/s. The spectrum shows a weak continuum and emission from O VI, C III, and He II. The FUSE data were obtained when the AGN was in a low state, which has revealed strong, narrow O VI emission lines. We also resolve intrinsic, associated absorption lines of O VI and the Lyman series. Several distinct kinematic components are present, spanning a velocity range of 0…
We present the results of an intensive ultraviolet monitoring campaign on the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4151, as part of an effort to study its short time-scale variability over a broad range in wavelength. The nucleus of NGC 4151 was observed continuously with the {\it International Ultraviolet Explorer} (IUE) for 9.3 days, yielding a pair of LWP and SWP spectra every $\sim$70 minutes, and during four-hour periods for 4 days prior to and 5 days after the continuous monitoring period. The sampling frequency of the observations is an order of magnitude higher than that of any previous UV monitoring …
We present the results of ultraviolet spectral monitoring of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 4151 performed by the Hopkins Ultraviolet Telescope during the Astro-2 mission. We show how the response of the Lyman continuum optical depth to variations in the continuum flux may be used to derive estimates of the distance of the absorbing gas from the central object. In this case, it seems that the absorbing gas is located $\leq 50$~pc away from the central source.
The bright Magellanic irregular galaxy NGC 4449 was observed during the Astro-2 Space Shuttle mission by the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UIT), which obtained images of a ~40 arcmin field centered on the galaxy in two broad far-ultraviolet (FUV) bands centered at 1520 A and 1620 A, with 3 arcsec - 5 arcsec spatial resolution. Together with H-alpha and H-beta fluxes from ground-based Fabry-Perot images, these data are analyzed in order to explore the recent star formation history of NGC 4449. Maps of the flux ratios H-alpha/FUV and FUV/blue continuum are presented and interpreted using evolut…
The NGC4410 group of galaxies provides us a rare opportunity to study a nearby (97 h75^-1 Mpc) example of a radio galaxy (NGC4410A) embedded in an extended X-ray source, with evidence for star formation that can be readily spatially distinguished from regions dominated by the AGN and shocks. We present broadband and narrowband optical images along with optical and IUE ultraviolet spectroscopy for the radio galaxy NGC 4410A and its companion NGC 4410B. Our H-alpha+[NII] images reveal six luminous HII regions (L_H-alpha ~ 1e40 erg/s distributed in an arc near NGC 4410A. Partially completing the …
We present a 1620 A image of the nearby globular cluster NGC 6752 obtained with the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UIT) during the Astro-2 mission of the Space Shuttle Endeavour in 1995 March. An ultraviolet-visible color-magnitude diagram (CMD) is derived for 216 stars matched with the visible photometry of Buonanno et al. (1986). This CMD provides a nearly complete census of the hot horizontal branch (HB) population with good temperature and luminosity discrimination for comparison with theoretical tracks. The observed data show good agreement with the theoretical zero-age horizontal branch …
As a step towards clarifying the ionization mechanism of LINERs, we have used the Hubble Space Telescope Faint Object Spectrograph to obtain an ultraviolet spectrum of the nucleus of NGC 6500. Compared with more luminous Seyfert nuclei, the emission-line spectrum of NGC 6500 is remarkable for its low-excitation character: C III], C II], and Mg II are the strongest collisionally excited lines in the UV, and C IV is not detected. The fast shock models of Dopita & Sutherland (1995, 1996) are a poor match to the observed spectrum, as they predict much stronger emission than is observed for high-ex…
Using the CFH12K camera, we apply the four band photometric technique to identify 904 carbon stars in an area 28' x 42' centered on NGC 6822. A few C stars, outside of this area were also discovered with the Las Campanas Swope Telescope. The NGC 6822 C star population has an average I of 19.26 mag leading to an average absolute I magnitude of -4.70 mag, a value essentially identical to the mean magnitude obtained for the C stars in IC 1613. Contrary to stars highlighting the optical image of NGC 6822, C stars are seen at large radial distances and trace a huge slightly elliptical halo which do…
The Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 5548 was observed for a week by Chandra using both the HETGS and LETGS spectrometers. In this paper we study the time variability of the continuum radiation. During our observation, the source showed a gradual increase in flux over four days, followed by a rapid decrease and flattening of the light curve afterwards. Superimposed upon these relatively slow variations several short duration bursts or quasi-periodic oscillations occured with a typical duration of several hours and separation between 0.6-0.9 days. The bursts show a delay of the hard X-rays with respect to …
We present a detailed analysis of the intrinsic X-ray absorption in the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4151 using Chandra/HETGS data obtained 2002 May, as part of a program which included simultaneous UV spectra using HST/STIS and FUSE. NGC 4151 was in a relatively low flux state during the observations reported here, although roughly 2.5 times as bright in the 2 --10 keV band as during a Chandra observation in 2000. The soft X-ray band was dominated by emission lines, which show no discernible variation in flux between the two observations. The 2002 data show the presence of a very highly ionized absor…
The bright Magellanic irregular galaxy NGC 4449 was observed by the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UIT) during the Astro-2 Spacelab mission in March, 1995. Far ultraviolet (FUV) images at a spatial resolution of ~3 arcsec show bright star-forming knots that are consistent with the general optical morphology of the galaxy and are often coincident with bright H II regions. Comparison of FUV with H-alpha shows that in a few regions, sequential star formation may have occurred over the last few Myr. The bright star forming complexes in NGC 4449 are superposed on a smooth, diffuse FUV background th…
(Abridged) We have used the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) to search for H_2 absorption in five starburst galaxies: NGC 1705, NGC 3310, NGC 4214, M83 (NGC 5236), and NGC 5253. We tentatively detect weak absorption by H_2 in M83 and NGC 5253, and set upper limits on the H_2 column density in the other galaxies. Conservative upper limits on the mass of molecular gas detected with FUSE are many orders of magnitude lower than the H_2 mass inferred from CO emission. This indicates that almost all of the H_2 is in the form of clouds with N(H_2)>10^20 cm^-2 that are opaque to far-UV li…
Improved analysis of ultraviolet and optical monitoring data on the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 3783 provides evidence for the existence of a supermassive, (8.7+/-1.1)x10^6 M_sun, black hole in this galaxy. By using recalibrated spectra from the International Ultraviolet Explorer satellite and ground-based optical data, as well as refined techniques of reverberation mapping analysis, we have reduced the statistical uncertainties in the response of the emission lines to variations in the ionizing continuum. The different time lags in the emission line responses indicate a stratification in the ionizat…
High resolution optical spectra of HD 37903 and HD 147009, which illuminate the reflection nebulae, NGC 2023 and vdB 102, were obtained for comparison with our results for HD 200775 and NGC 7023. Ground-based measurements of the molecules, CH, C$_2$, and CN, and the atoms, Na I and K I, were analyzed to extract physical conditions in the foreground cloud. Estimates of the gas density, gas temperature and flux of ultraviolet radiation were derived and were compared with the results from infrared and radio studies of the main molecular cloud. The conditions are similar to those found in studies …
We present 3-5 micron spectroscopy of the interacting system NGC 6240, showing the presence of two active galactic nuclei. The brightest (southern) nucleus shows up with a starburst-like emission, with a prominent 3.3 micron emission feature. However, the presence of an AGN is revealed by the detection of a broad Br alpha emission line, with a width of ~1,800 km/s. The spectrum of the faintest (northern) nucleus shows typical AGN features, such as a steep continuum and broad absorption features in the M-band. We discuss the physical properties of the dusty absorbers/emitters, and show that in …
Using new Chandra X-ray observations and existing XMM-Newton X-ray and Hubble far ultraviolet observations, we aim to detect and identify the faint X-ray sources belonging to the Galactic globular cluster NGC 2808 in order to understand their role in the evolution of globular clusters. We present a Chandra X-ray observation of the Galactic globular cluster NGC 2808. We classify the X-ray sources associated with the cluster by analysing their colours and variability. Previous observations with XMM-Newton and far ultraviolet observations with the Hubble Space Telescope are re-investigated to hel…
This paper combines data from the three preceding papers in order to analyze the multi-waveband variability and spectral energy distribution of the Seyfert~1 galaxy NGC~4151 during the December 1993 monitoring campaign. The source, which was near its peak historical brightness, showed strong, correlated variability at X-ray, ultraviolet, and optical wavelengths. The strongest variations were seen in medium energy ($\sim$1.5~keV) X-rays, with a normalized variability amplitude (NVA) of 24\%. Weaker (NVA = 6\%) variations (uncorrelated with those at lower energies) were seen at soft $γ$-ray ener…
We have undertaken near-continuous monitoring of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 7469 in the X-ray with RXTE over a ~30d baseline. The source shows strong variability with a root-mean-square (rms) amplitude of ~16 per cent, and peak-to-peak variations of a factor of order 2. Simultaneous data over this period were obtained in the ultraviolet (UV) using IUE, making this the most intensive X-ray UV/X-ray variability campaign performed for any active galaxy. Comparison of the continuum light curves reveals very similar amplitudes of variability, but different variability characteristics, with the X-rays…
The intense, bursting X-ray source in the globular cluster NGC 1851 was one of the first cluster sources discovered, but has remained optically unidentified for 25 years. We report here on results from Hubble Space Telescope WFPC2 multicolor images in NGC 1851. Our high spatial resolution images resolve ~200 objects in the 3'' radius Einstein X-ray error circle, 40 times as many as in previous ground-based work. A color-magnitude diagram of the cluster clearly reveals a markedly UV-excess object with B~21, (U-B) ~ -0.9 only 2'' from the X-ray position. The UV-excess candidate is 0.12'' distant…
We report on two Chandra observations, and a simultaneous Hubble Space Telescope ultraviolet observation, of the dwarf Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4395. Each Chandra observation had a duration of ~30 ks, with a separation of ~50 ks. The spectrum was observed to harden between these observations via a scaling down of the soft-band flux. The inter-observation variability is in a different sense to the observed variability within each observation and is most likely the result of increased absorption. Spectral variations were seen during the first observation suggesting that the X-ray emission is produce…
We present the results from simultaneous observations of the Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4051 with the Chandra High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer and the HST Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph. The X-ray grating spectrum reveals absorption and emission lines from hydrogen-like and helium-like ions of O, Ne, Mg and Si. We resolve two distinct X-ray absorption systems: a high-velocity blueshifted system at -2340+/-130 km/s and a low-velocity blueshifted system at -600+/-130 km/s. In the UV spectrum we detect strong absorption, mainly from C IV, N V and Si IV, that is resolved i…
Far ultraviolet FUV imagery of the edge-on, Sc/SBd galaxy, NGC 4631 reveals very strong FUV emission, resulting from active star formation, uniformly distributed along the galactic mid- plane. Multi-band imagery, HI and HII position-velocity curves and extinction considerations all imply that the emission is from the outer edges of the visible galaxy. The overall FUV morphology of this edge-on disk system is remarkably similar to those of the so-called "chain galaxies" evident at high redshift, thus suggesting a similar interpretation for at least some of those distant objects. FUV, U, B and V…
We present a detailed analysis of the intrinsic absorption in the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4151 using UV spectra from the HST/STIS and FUSE, obtained 2002 May as part of a set of contemporaneous observations that included Chandra/HETGS spectra. In our analysis of the Chandra spectra, we determined that the soft X-ray absorber was the source of the saturated UV lines of O VI, C IV, and N V associated with the absorption feature at a radial velocity of ~ -500 km/sec, which we referred to as component D+E. In the present work, we have derived tighter constrains on the the line-of-sight covering facto…
Using the Faint Object Spectrograph (FOS) aboard the Hubble Space Telescope, we have obtained the first time-resolved spectra of the King et al. ultraviolet-bright counterpart to the 11-minute binary X-ray source in the core of the globular cluster NGC 6624. This object cannot be readily observed in the visible, even from HST, due to a much brighter star superposed <0.1'' distant. Our FOS data show a highly statistically significant UV flux modulation with a period of 11.46+-0.04 min, very similar to the 685 sec period of the known X-ray modulation, definitively confirming the association betw…
In order to improve the reverberation-mapping based estimate of the mass of the central supermassive black hole in the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4151, we have reanalyzed archival ultraviolet monitoring spectra from two campaigns undertaken with the International Ultraviolet Explorer. We measure emission-line time delays for four lines, C IV 1549, He II 1640, C III] 1909, and Mg II 2798, from both campaigns. We combine these measurements with the dispersion of the variable part of each respective emission line to obtain the mass of the central object. Despite the problematic nature of some of the da…
We report the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer observations of the heavily absorbed Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 4945, which confirm the large column density of the absorber, corresponding to the optical depth to Thomson scattering of about 2.4. The hard X-ray flux (8-30 keV) measured by us is rapidly variable with a large amplitude, on time scales of a day or less. This implies that the bulk of the extreme absorption does not originate in a parsec-size, geometrically thick molecular torus: limits on the amount of scattered flux require that the optically thick material on parsec scales must be rather geom…
We present results from a new modelling technique which can account for the observed optical/NIR - FIR/submm spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of normal star-forming galaxies in terms of a minimum number of essential parameters specifying the star-formation history and geometrical distribution of stars and dust. The model utilises resolved optical/NIR images to constrain the old stellar population and associated dust, and geometry-sensitive colour information in the FIR/submm to constrain the spatial distributions of young stars and associated dust. It is successfully applied to the edge-on…
The results of the stellar photometry of the images ACS/WFC and WFPC2 of the HST are used to study stellar population and spatial distribution of stars in three edge-on galaxies: NGC 891, NGC 4144 and NGC 4244. The measuring of the number density of the old stars revealed two stellar substructures in these galaxies: thick disk and halo. The borders of these substructures consisting mainly of red giants, are determined by the change of number density gradient of the old stars. The revealed halos have flattened shapes and extend up to 25 kpc from the galaxy planes. The obtained results of number…
We present X-ray (ROSAT), infrared, and radio observations of NGC 4395, which harbors the optically least luminous type 1 Seyfert nucleus discovered thus far. In combination with published optical and ultraviolet spectra, we have used these data to assemble the broadband spectral energy distribution (SED) of the galaxy's nucleus. Interestingly, the SED of NGC 4395 differs markedly from the SEDs of both quasars and typical low-luminosity active galactic nuclei, which may be a manifestation of the different physical conditions (i.e., black hole masses, accretion rates, and/or accretion modes) th…
We present a 60 ks Chandra ACIS-S observation of the isolated edge-on spiral NGC 3556, together with a multiwavelength analysis of various discrete X-ray sources and diffuse X-ray features. Among 33 discrete X-ray sources detected within the I_B = 25 mag per square arcsec isophote ellipse of the galaxy, we identify a candidate for the galactic nucleus, an ultraluminous X-ray source that might be an accreting intermediate-mass black hole, a possible X-ray binary with a radio counterpart, and two radio-bright giant HII regions. We detect large amounts of extraplanar diffuse X-ray emission, which…
We present spatially resolved far-UV spectra (912-1840 A) of NGC 1068 obtained using the Hopkins Ultraviolet Telescope (HUT) during the March 1995 Astro-2 mission. Three spectra of this prototypical Seyfert 2 galaxy were obtained through a 12 arcsec diameter aperture centered on different locations near the nucleus. The first pointing (A1) was centered west of the optical nucleus; the nucleus was on the eastern edge of the aperture. The second (A2) was centered southwest of the optical nucleus with the nucleus well inside the aperture. The third (B) was centered on the ionization cone, with th…
M94 (NGC 4736) is investigated using images from the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (FUV-band), Hubble Space Telescope (NUV-band), Kitt Peak 0.9-m telescope (H-alpha, R, and I bands), and Palomar 5-m telescope (B-band), along with spectra from the International Ultraviolet Explorer and Lick 1-m telescopes. The wide-field UIT image shows FUV emission from (a) an elongated nucleus, (b) a diffuse inner disk, where H-alpha is observed in absorption, (c) a bright inner ring of H II regions at the perimeter of the inner disk (R = 48 arcsec. = 1.1 kpc), and (d) two 500-pc size knots of hot stars exter…
We carry out high-resolution FUSE spectroscopy of the nuclear region of NGC 1068. The first set of spectra was obtained with a 30" square aperture that collects all emission from the narrow-line region. The data reveal a strong broad OVI component of FWHM ~3500 kms-1 and two narrow OVI 1031/1037 components of ~350 kms-1. The CIII 977 and NIII 991 emission lines in this spectrum can be fitted with a narrow component of FWHM ~1000 kms-1 and a broad one of ~2500 kms-1. Another set of seven spatially resolved spectra were made using a long slit of 1.25" X 20", at steps of ~1" along the axis of the…
We present Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) images of the prototypical edge-on starburst galaxies M82 and NGC253. Our initial analysis is restricted to the complex of ultraviolet (UV) filaments in the starburst-driven outflows in the galaxy halos. The UV luminosities in the halo are too high to be provided by shock-heated or photoionized gas except perhaps in the brightest filaments in M82, suggesting that most of the UV light is the stellar continuum of the starburst scattered into our line of sight by dust in the outflow. A large position angle misalignment between the stellar bar and the distribution of dust in the late-type barred spiral NGC 3488 was discovered, using mid-infrared images from the Spitzer Space Telescope and optical images from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The angle between the bar and dust patterns was measured to be 25+-2deg, larger than most of the misalignments found previously in barred systems based on Ha or HI/CO observations. The stellar bar is bright at optical and 3.6um, while the dust pattern is more prominent in the 8um band but also shows up in the SDSS u and g-band images…
We present FUSE spectroscopy and supporting data for star-forming regions in nearby galaxies, to examine their massive-star content and explore the use of abundance and population indicators in this spectral range for high-redshift galaxies. New far-ultraviolet spectra are shown for four bright H II regions in M33 (NGC 588, 592, 595, and 604), the H II region NGC 5461 in M101, and the starburst nucleus of NGC 7714, supplemented by the very-low-metallicity galaxy I Zw 18. In each case, we see strong Milky Way absorption systems from H2, but intrinsic absorption within each galaxy is weak or und…
Recent results from the Planetary Nebula Spectrograph (PN.S) survey have revealed a rapidly falling velocity dispersion profile in the nearby elliptical galaxy NGC 3379, casting doubts on whether this intermediate-luminosity galaxy has the kind of dark matter halo expected in LambdaCDM cosmology. We present a detailed dynamical study of this galaxy, combining long-slit spectroscopy, SAURON integral-field data, and PN.S velocities, reaching to more than seven effective radii (R_e). We construct spherical and axisymmetric dynamical models for these data with the flexible made-to-measure NMAGIC c…
We have examined the physical conditions in intrinsic UV-absorbing gas in the Seyfert galaxy NGC 4151, using echelle spectra obtained with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS). We confirm the presence of the kinematic components detected in earlier GHRS observations as well as a new broad absorption feature at a radial velocity of -1680 km/s. The UV continuum of NGC 4151 decreased by a factor of 4 over the previous two years, and we argue the changes in the column density of the low ionization absorption lines associated with the broad component at -490 km/s reflect the decrease in …
We present results on the location, physical conditions, and geometry of the outflow in the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 3783 from a study of the variable intrinsic UV absorption. Based on 18 observations with HST/STIS and 6 observations with FUSE, we find: 1) The absorption from the lowest-ionization species in each of the three strong kinematic components varied inversely with the continuum flux, indicating the ionization structure responded to changes in the photoionizing flux over the weekly timescales sampled by our observations. 2) A multi- component model with an unocculted NLR and separate BLR…
Star formation (SF) takes place in unusual places such as way out in the intergalactic medium out of material expelled from parent galaxies. We wish to answer whether SF proceeds in this specific environment in a similar way than in galactic disks. We have carried out a multiwavelength analysis of the interacting system NGC 5291, which is remarkable for its extended HI ring hosting numerous intergalactic HII regions. We combined new ultraviolet (GALEX) observations with archival Halpha, 8 mu m (Spitzer Space Telescope) and HI (VLA B-array) images of the system. We have found that the morpholog…
HST/WFPC2 images resolved NGC 7673 into a large number of star clusters. Among these, 31 fall inside the IUE large aperture, which was used to acquire an integrated ultraviolet spectrum of the galaxy. We have fitted Starburst99 evolutionary synthesis models to the observed colours of these clusters and derived ages, reddenings, and masses of the clusters. Then a simple sum of the clusters synthetic UV spectra has been compared to the observed IUE spectrum, in order to investigate the star formation history of NGC 7673.
An early analysis of Chandra observations of the planetary nebula NGC 6543 suggested that the location and the derived temperature for the X-ray emitting region is inconsistent with the abundances measured for this object (Chu et al. 2001). We revisit observations of this source (following significant updates to both the reprocessing and extraction software) in order to propose a resolution to this apparent anomaly. Our re-analysis using abundances found from observations in the infrared, optical, and ultraviolet suggests that the location and temperature of the X-ray emission from NGC 6543 is…
