We present spectroscopic observations of 26 galaxies of type E and S0, based on their blue morphologies, located in voids by the study of Grogin & Geller (1999). Measurements of redshift, velocity dispersion, and four Lick line indices, Mgb, Fe5270, Fe5335, and Hbeta with their errors are given for all of these galaxies, along with Hbeta, [OIII], Halpha, and [NII] emission line strengths for a subset of these objects. These sources are brighter than M star for low density regions and tend to be bluer than their counterpart early-type objects in high density regions. Using the models of Thomas et al. (2003) gives metal abundances and ages with a median alpha enhancement, [alpha/Fe] = +0.13, and median metals abundance, [Z/H] = +0.22, values comparable to those found for E and S0 galaxies in clusters, but with a wider spread in [Z/H] towards low values. If the emission line subsample is interpreted as younger, the proportion of young objects is higher than for early-types in higher density regions. There is a significant incidence of sources in the sample with emission lines in their spectra (46% with Hbeta and [OIII] and 69% with Halpha or [NII]) as well as shells and rings in their morphologies (19%). The diagnostic log[NII/Halpha], log[OIII/Hbeta] diagram places 10 of 12 emission line galaxies in or near the star forming and liner region and two among the Seyferts. The Halpha fluxes indicate star formation rates of 0.2 to 1.0 Msun per yr. The percentage of these early-type void galaxies undergoing star formation appears to be higher compared to their cluster counterparts and the range of ages wider.
Some studies show that there are recent star formations in galaxies including early type galaxies. This suggests that we possibly did not obtain the accurate ages and metallicities of the dominating stellar populations of galaxies from colors. We study how young populations (YSPs) in composite stellar populations affect the colors of star systems and analyze how the stellar ages and metallicities derived from colors possibly deviate from those of the dominating populations of composite star systems. Some possible distributions of the differences between stellar ages and metallicities determine…
Globular cluster ages are more than just lower limits to the age of the universe; the distribution of ages constraints the timescales for galaxy formation and chemical evolution. Globular cluster populations with different metallicities have now been detected in many galaxies, and understanding how these populations formed requires knowing their relative ages. We examined the relative ages of the two M31 globular cluster populations using their color and luminosity distributions and found that the metal-rich clusters could be up to 50% younger than the metal-poor clusters. While a small delay …
We present homogeneous scales of ages and metallicities for star clusters from very young objects, through intermediate-age ones up to the oldest known clusters. All the selected clusters have integrated spectra in the visible range, as well as reliable determinations of their ages and metallicities. From these spectra equivalent widths (EWs) of KCaII, Gband(CH) and MgI metallic, and Hdelta, Hgamma and Hbeta Balmer lines have been measured homogeneously. The analysis of these EWs shows that the EW sums of the metallic and Balmer H lines, separately, are good indicators of cluster age for objec…
We use the spectra of ~ 22,000 early-type galaxies, selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, to infer the ages, metallicities and star formation histories of these galaxies. We find clear evidence of "downsizing", i.e. galaxies with larger velocity dispersion have older stellar populations. In particular, most early-type galaxies with velocity dispersion exceeding 200 km s-1 formed more than 90% of their current stellar mass at redshift z > 2.5. Therefore, star formation was suppressed around this redshift. We also show that chemical enrichment was rapid, lasting 1-2 Gyr and find evidence t…
We have assembled a catalogue of relative ages, metallicities and abundance ratios for about 150 local galaxies in field, group and cluster environments. The galaxies span morphological types from cD and ellipticals, to late type spirals. Ages and metallicities were estimated from high quality published spectral line indices using Worthey & Ottaviani (1997) single stellar population evolutionary models. The identification of galaxy age as a fourth parameter in the fundamental plane (Forbes et al. 1998) is confirmed by our larger sample of ages. We investigate trends between age and metallicity…
Colour-magnitude diagrams are presented for the first time for L32, L38, K28 (L43), K44 (L68) and L116, which are clusters projected onto the outer parts of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). The photometry was carried out in the Washington system $C$ and $T_1$ filters allowing the determination of ages by means of the magnitude difference between the red giant clump and the main sequence turnoff, and metallicities from the red giant branch locus. The clusters have ages in the range 2-6 Gyr, and metallicities between $-1.65<$ [Fe/H] $<-1.10$, increasing the sample of intermediate-age clusters i…
Spectra of galaxies contain an enormous amount of information about the relative mixture of ages and metallicities of constituent stars. We present a comprehensive study designed to extract the maximum information from spectra of data quality typical in large galaxy surveys. We test fitting techniques using the Bruzual-Charlot 2003 high resolution simple stellar population synthesis models to simultaneously estimate the ages and metallicities of 101 globular clusters in M31 and the Magellanic Clouds. The clusters cover a wide range of ages and metallicities, 4 Myr to 20 Gyr and -1.6 < [Fe/H] <…
We present results on the stellar populations of 232 quiescent galaxies in the Shapley Supercluster, based on spectroscopy from the AAOmega spectrograph at the AAT. The key characteristic of this survey is its coverage of many low-luminosity objects (sigma ~ 50 km/s), with high signal-to-noise (~45 per Angstrom). Balmer-line age estimates are recovered with ~25% precision even for the faintest sample members. We summarize the observations and absorption line data, and present correlations of derived ages and metallicities with mass and luminosity. We highlight the strong correlation between ag…
uvby(--$β$) photometry has been obtained for an additional 411 very metal-poor stars selected from the HK survey, and used to derive basic parameters such as interstellar reddenings, metallicities, photometric classifications, distances, and relative ages... These very metal-poor stars are compared to M92 in the c_0,(b-y)_0 diagram, and evidence is seen for field stars 1-3 Gyrs younger than this globular cluster. The significance of these younger very metal-poor stars is discussed in the context of Galactic evolution, mentioning such possibilities as hierarchical star-formation/mass-infall of …
Aims: We derive the age and metallicity of circumnuclear star formation regions (CNSFRs) located in the spiral galaxies NGC6951 and NGC1097, and investigate the cause of the very low equivalent widths of emission lines found for these regions. Methods: We used optical two-dimensional spectroscopic data obtained with Gemini GMOS-IFUs and a grid of photoionization models to derive the the metallicities and ages of CNSFRs. Results: We find star formation rates in the range 0.002-0.14 Msun/yr and oxygen abundance of 12+log(O/H)~8.8 dex, similar to those of most metal-rich nebulae located in the in…
We have derived ages and metallicities from co-added spectra of 131 globular clusters associated with the giant elliptical galaxy NGC 4472. Based upon a calibration with Galactic globular clusters, we find that our sample of globular clusters in NGC 4472 span a metallicity range of approximately -1.6 <= [Fe/H] <= 0 dex. There is evidence of a radial metallicity gradient in the globular cluster system, which is steeper than that seen in the underlying starlight. Determination of the absolute ages of the globular clusters is uncertain, but formally, the metal-poor population of globular clusters…
Observations of Young Star Cluster ({\bf YSC}) systems in interacting galaxies are reviewed with particular emphasis on their Luminosity Functions ({\bf LF}) and colour distributions. A few spectroscopic abundance measurements are available. They will be compared to YSC abundance predictions from spiral galaxy models. Evolutionary synthesis models allow to derive ages for individual YSCs on the basis of their broad band colours. With individual YSC ages, models predict the future colour and luminosity evolution of the YSC systems that will be compared - after a Hubble time - to observations of…
Central velocity dispersions and eight line-strength Lick indices have been determined from 1.3${\rm Å}$ resolution long-slit spectra of 16 elliptical galaxies in Hickson compact groups. These data were used to determine galaxy properties (ages, metallicities and $α$-element enhancements) and allowed a comparison with the parameters determined for a sample of galaxies in lower density environments, studied by González (1993). The stellar population parameters were derived by comparison to single stellar population models of Thomas et al. (2003) and to a new set of SSP models for the indices Mg…
An analysis of ages, metallicities, and [alpha/Fe] ratios of globular cluster systems in early-type galaxies is presented, based on Lick index measurements summarized in Puzia et al. (2004, Paper I of this series). In the light of calibration and measurement uncertainties, age-metallicity degeneracy, and the relative dynamic range of Lick indices, as well as systematics introduced by abundance ratio variations (in particular variations of [alpha/Fe] ratios), we find that the most reliable age indicator for our dataset is a combination of the Lick Balmer-line indices HgammaA, Hbeta, and HdeltaA…
We present metallicities and ages for 52 red giants in the remote Galactic dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxy Leo II. These stars cover the entire surface area of Leo II and are radial velocity members. We obtained medium-resolution multi-fiber spectroscopy with ESO/VLT's FLAMES spectrograph. The metallicities were determined based on the near-infrared Ca II triplet. The resulting metallicity distribution (MD) is asymmetric and peaks at [Fe/H]=-1.74 dex on the Carretta & Gratton scale. The full range in metallicities extends from -2.4 to -1.1 dex. As in other dSphs, no extremely metal-poor red gia…
We present results of an extensive spectroscopic survey of Subgiant stars in the stellar system omega Centauri. Using infrared CaII triplet lines, we derived metallicities and radial velocities for more than 250 stars belonging to different stellar populations of the system. We find that the most metal rich component, the anomalous Sub Giant Branch (SGB-a), has a metallicity of [Fe/H] -0.6 fully compatible with that determined along the anomalous Red Giant Branch (RGB-a). Our analysis suggests that the age of this component and of the other metal-intermediate (-1.4 < [Fe/H] < -1.0) stellar pop…
We have measured central line strengths for a complete sample of early type galaxies in the Fornax cluster, comprising 11 elliptical and 11 lenticular galaxies, more luminous than M_B=-17. In contrast to the elliptical galaxies in the sample studied by Gonzalez (and recently revisited by Trager) we find that the Fornax ellipticals follow the locus of galaxies of fixed age in Worthey's models and have metallicities varying from roughly solar to three times solar. The lenticular galaxies however exhibit a substantial spread to younger luminosity weighted ages indicating a more extended star form…
A new metallicity distribution and an age-metallicity relation are presented for 437 nearby F and G turn-off and sub-giant stars selected from radial velocity data of Nidever et al. Photometric metallicities are derived from uvby-Hβphotometry, and the stellar ages from the isochrones of Bergbusch & VandenBerg as transformed to $uvby$ photometry using the methods of Clem et al. The X (stellar-population) criterion of Schuster et al., which combines both kinematic and metallicity information, provides 22 thick-disk stars. σ_{\rm W} = 32 \pm 5 km s^{-1}, <V_{\rm rot}> = 154 \pm 6 km s^{-1} and <[…
(abr.) We present the analysis of the spectroscopic catalog of galaxies in the Coma cluster from Mobasher et al. This catalog comprises ~300 spectra of cluster members with magnitudes M_B=-20.5 to -14 in two areas of ~1 X 1.5 Mpc towards the center and the SW region of the cluster. In this paper the analysis is restricted to the 257 galaxies with no emission lines in their spectra. The strength of the age-sensitive indices is found to correlate with galaxy magnitude over the whole magnitude range. Similarly, the metallicity-sensitive indices anticorrelate with magnitude. By comparing the obser…
Narrow band photometry is presented on 27 dwarf ellipticals in the Fornax cluster. Calibrated with Galactic globular cluster data and spectrophotometric population models, the colors indicated that dwarf ellipticals have a mean [Fe/H] of -1.00+/-0.28 ranging from -1.6 to -0.4. The mean age of dwarf ellipticals, also determined photometrically, is estimated at 10+/-1 Gyrs compared to 13 Gyrs for bright Fornax ellipticals. Comparison of our metallicity color and Mg_2 indices demonstrates that the [Mg/Fe] ratio is lower in dwarf ellipticals than their more massive cousins, which is consistent wit…
We present an analysis of the color-magnitude-velocity dispersion relation for a sample of 39320 early-type galaxies within the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We demonstrate that the color-magnitude relation is entirely a consequence of the fact that both the luminosities and colors of these galaxies are correlated with stellar velocity dispersions. Previous studies of the color-magnitude relation over a range of redshifts suggest that the luminosity of an early-type galaxy is an indicator of its metallicity, whereas residuals in color from the relation are indicators of the luminosity-weighted age…
UV-to-visual spectra of eight young star clusters in the merger remnant and protoelliptical galaxy NGC 7252, obtained with the Blanco 4-m telescope on Cerro Tololo, are presented. These clusters lie at projected distances of 3-15 kpc from the center and move with a velocity dispersion of 140+/-35 km/s in the line of sight. Seven of the clusters show strong Balmer absorption lines in their spectra [EW(H-beta)= 6-13 Angstrom], while the eighth lies in a giant HII region and shows no detectable absorption features. Based on comparisons with model-cluster spectra by Bruzual & Charlot (1996) and Br…
As part of the DEEP2 galaxy redshift survey, we analyze absorption line strengths in stacked Keck/DEIMOS spectra of red field galaxies with weak to no emission lines, at redshifts 0.7 <= z <= 1. Comparison with models of stellar population synthesis shows that red galaxies at z ~ 0.9 have mean luminosity-weighted ages of the order of only 1 Gyr and at least solar metallicities. This result cannot be reconciled with a scenario where all stars evolved passively after forming at very high z. Rather, a significant fraction of stars can be no more than 1 Gyr old, which means that star formation con…
We present near-infrared photometry of the globular cluster systems of the early-type galaxies NGC 4472, NGC 4594, NGC 3585, and NGC 5813. We combine these near-infrared data, obtained with PANIC at the Magellan Baade 6.5m telescope, with archival optical HST and FORS/VLT data, and use the optical to near-infrared colors to constrain the ages and metallicities of the globular clusters around the target galaxies. For NGC 4472 we have the most extensive near-infrared and optical photometric dataset. These colors show that the NGC 4472 globular cluster system has a broad metallicity distribution …
We exploit recent constraints on the ages and metallicities of early-type galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) to gain new insight into the physical origin of two fundamental relations obeyed by these galaxies: the colour-magnitude and the Mg2-sigmaV relations. Our sample consists of 26,003 galaxies selected from the SDSS DR2 on the basis of their concentrated light profiles, for which we have previously derived median-likelihood estimates of stellar metallicity, light-weighted age and stellar mass. Our analysis provides the most unambiguous demonstration to date of the fact that bo…
We present measurements of ages, metallicities, and [alpha/Fe] ratios for 16 globular clusters (GC) in NGC 147, NGC 185, and NGC 205 and of the central regions of the diffuse galaxy light in NGC 185, and NGC 205. Our results are based on spectra obtained with the SCORPIO multi-slit spectrograph at the 6-m telescope of the Russian Academy of Sciences. We include in our analysis high-quality HST/WFPC2 photometry of individual stars in the studied GCs to investigate the influence of their horizontal branch (HB) morphology on the spectroscopic analysis. All our sample GCs appear to be old (T>8 Gyr…
Fitting whole spectra at intermediate spectral resolution (R = 1000 -- 3000), to derive physical properties of stellar populations, appears as an optimized alternative to methods based on spectrophotometric indices: it uses all the redundant information contained in the signal. This paper addresses the validation of the method and it investigates the quality of the population models together with the reliability of the fitting procedures. We are using two algorithms: STECKMAP, a non-parametric regularized program and NBURSTS a parametric non-linear minimization. We compare three spectral synth…
We present Washington system C,T_1 CMDs of 13 star clusters and their surrounding fields which lie in the outer parts of the LMC disk. Ages are determined by means of the magnitude difference between the giant branch clump and the turnoff, while metallicities are derived from the location of the giant and subgiant branches as compared to fiducial star clusters. We find that in most cases the stellar population of each star cluster is quite similar to that of the field where it is embedded. Three particular fields present remarkable properties: (i) The so far unique cluster ESO121-SC03 at ~9 Gy…
We present and discuss new determinations of metallicity, rotation, age, kinematics, and Galactic orbits for a complete, magnitude-limited, and kinematically unbiased sample of 16,682 nearby F and G dwarf stars. Our 63,000 new, accurate radial-velocity observations for nearly 13,500 stars allow identification of most of the binary stars in the sample and, together with published data complete the kinematic information for 14,139 stars. A major effort has been devoted to the determination of new isochrone ages for all stars for which this is possible. Particular attention has been given to a re…
We present deep optical and near-infrared imaging of the rich cluster A2218 at z=0.17. Our optical imaging comes from new multicolour Hubble Space Telescope WFPC2 observations in the F450W (B), F606W (V) and F814W (I) passbands. These observations are complemented by deep near-infrared, Ks-band, imaging from the new INGRID imager on the 4.2-m William Herschel Telescope. This combination provides unique high-precision multicolour optical-infrared photometry and morphological information for a large sample of galaxies in the core of this rich cluster at a lookback time of ~3Gyrs. We analyse the …
We have employed FORS1/2+VLT to acquire deep B and R CCD images of 16 dwarf elliptical galaxies in the direction of the Virgo cluster. For each dwarf we measure the R-band surface brightness fluctuation (SBF) magnitude \bar{m}_R and the (B-R) colour in a number of fields at different galactocentric distances. From the field-to-field variation of the two quantities we determine the SBF distance by means of the (B-R)-\bar{M}_R relation. The derived distances of the dwarfs are ranging from 14.9-21.3Mpc, with a mean 1sigma uncertainty of 1.4Mpc, confirming that there is considerable depth in the d…
We derive stellar metallicities, light-weighted ages and stellar masses for a magnitude-limited sample of 175,128 galaxies drawn from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release Two (SDSS DR2). We compute median-likelihood estimates of these parameters using a large library of model spectra at medium-high resolution, covering a comprehensive range of star formation histories. The constraints we derive are set by the simultaneous fit of five spectral absorption features, which are well reproduced by our population synthesis models. By design, these constraints depend only weakly on the alpha/Fe e…
Hickson Compact Groups (HCGs) constitute an interesting extreme in the range of environments in which galaxies are located, as the space density of galaxies in these small groups are otherwise only found in the centres of much larger clusters. The work presented here uses Lick indices to make a comparison of ages and chemical compositions of galaxies in HCGs with those in other environments (clusters, loose groups and the field). The metallicity and relative abundance of `$α$-elements' show strong correlations with galaxy age and central velocity dispersion, with similar trends found in all en…
New calibrations of spectrophotometric indices of elliptical galaxies as functions of spectrophotometric indices are presented, permitting estimates of mean stellar population ages and metallicities. These calibrations are based on evolutionary models including a two-phase interstellar medium, infall and a galactic wind.Free parameters were fixed by requiring that models reproduce the mean trend of data in the color-magnitude diagram as well as in the plane of indices Hbeta-Mg2 and Mg2-<Fe>. To improve the location of faint ellipticals(MB > -20) in the Hbeta-Mg2 diagram, down-sizing was introd…
Observations of the stellar content of the Milky Way's bulge helps to understand the stellar content and evolution of distant galaxies. In this brief overview I will first highlight some recent work directed towards measuring the history of star formation and the chemical composition of the central few parsecs of the Galaxy. High resolution spectroscopic observations by Ramrez et al. (1998) of luminous M stars in this region yield a near solar value for [Fe/H] from direct measurements of iron lines. Then I will present some results from an ongoing program by my colleagues and myself which has …
We present high S/N integrated spectra of 24 star clusters in the LMC obtained using the FLAIR spectrograph at the UK Schmidt. The spectra have been placed onto the Lick/IDS system in order to test the calibration of Simple Stellar Population (SSP) models. We have compared the SSP-predicted metallicities of the clusters with literature Ca-Triplet values, and find that there is good agreement in the range --2.10 < [Fe/H] < 0. However, the magnesium indices systematically predict higher metallicities than iron, among the possible explanations for this are that the LMC clusters possess [alpha/Fe]…
Single-star stellar population (ssSSP) models are usually used for stellar population studies. However, more than 50% of stars are in binaries and evolve differently from single stars. This suggests that the effects of binary interactions should be considered when modeling the stellar populations of galaxies and star clusters. Via a rapid spectral stellar population synthesis (RPS) model, we give detailed studies of the effects of binary interactions on the Lick indices and colours of stellar populations, and on the determination of the stellar ages and metallicities of populations. The result…
We present a study of the nearby post-merger giant elliptical galaxy, NGC 5128 (Centaurus A), in which we use the properties of its globular cluster (GC) and planetary nebula (PN) systems to constrain its evolution. Using photometric and spectroscopic data for 215 GCs presented in Paper I, we study trends in age, metallicity, and kinematics for the GC system. We confirm that the GC metallicity distribution is bimodal, and show that these two sub-populations have different properties. Using spectral line index measurements of the brightest clusters, the metal-poor GCs have old ages like the Mil…
We complement our study of alpha/Fe enhanced stellar population models of Lick absorption indices (Thomas et al. 2003) by comparing two sets of alpha/Fe enhanced models. In both models the impact on Lick indices due to alpha/Fe enhancement is accounted for through a modification of the stellar absorption line-strengths using the response functions of Tripicco & Bell (1995). One set of models, however, uses solar-scaled, the other alpha/Fe enhanced stellar evolutionary tracks. Since the alpha/Fe enhanced tracks are hotter than the solar-scaled ones (Salasnich et al. 2000), the correspondent ste…
We present narrow band data on dwarf ellipticals in nearby (Virgo, Fornax) and intermediate redshift clusters (A2125, A2218) in order to study their mean age and metallicities. In all four clusters, nucleated dwarf ellipticals display colors that place them on the high metallicity end of the Milky Way globular cluster sequence. Normal dwarf ellipticals display colors, and resulting metallicities and ages, that align them with bright ellipticals. This suggests that dE,N's may be the ancestors to the red GC population found around many elliptical galaxies.
Systematic variations in the line strength indices H_beta, Mg2, and <Fe> are observed across elliptical galaxies and from one object to another. Furthermore arguments are given for an enhancement of Mg (\alfa in general) with respect to Fe toward the center of these galaxies. In this study we have investigated the ability of the H_beta, Mg2 and <Fe> diagnostics to assess the metallicity, [Mg/Fe] ratios, and ages of elliptical galaxies. To this aim, first we derive basic calibrations for the variations dH_beta, dMg2 and d<Fe> as a function of Dlog(t), Dlog(Z/Zo), and D[Mg/Fe]. Second, we analyz…
We present a study of the star formation properties of a sample of emission line galaxies (ELGs) with respect to their environment. This study is part of a bigger project that aimed to find galaxies in voids and to investigate the large scale structure of the ELGs. A survey for ELGs was therefore conducted with the result that 16 galaxies have been found in very low density environments, of which 8 ELGs were found in two very well defined nearby voids. The sample presented here contains some galaxies identified in voids, as well as in the field environment that delimited the voids. These ELGs …
This is the second paper of a series devoted to study the stellar content of early-type galaxies. The goal of the series is to set constraints on the evolutionary status of these objects. We use a new set of models which include an improved stellar library (MILES) to derive simple stellar population (SSP)-equivalent parameters in a sample of 98 early-type galaxies. The sample contains galaxies in the field, poor groups, and galaxies in the Virgo and Coma clusters. We find that low-density environment galaxies span a larger range in SSP age and metallicity than their counterparts in high density…
We report on multi-object spectroscopy of 37 candidate star clusters around the giant early-type radio galaxy NGC 1316 (Fornax A), the brightest galaxy in the Fornax cluster. For the star clusters in this sample, we measure a mean radial velocity of 1698 +/- 46 km/s, a rotation velocity of 175 +/- 70 km/s, and a velocity dispersion of 227 +/- 33 km/s within a galactocentric radius of 24 kpc. Using the projected mass estimator and assuming isotropic orbits, the estimated total mass is (6.6 +/- 1.7) E+11 solar masses within a radius of 24 kpc. The mass is uncertain by about a factor of two, depe…
We review the current basic picture of the evolution of massive stars and how their evolution and structure changes as a function of initial mass. We give an overview of the fate of modern (Pop I) and primordial (Pop III) stars with emphasis on massive and very massive stars. For single stars we show how the type of explosions, the type of remnant and their frequencies changes for different initial metallicities.
We discuss the tracing of star formation histories with ESA's space astrometry mission GAIA, emphasizing the advantages of AGB stars for this purpose. GAIA's microarcsecond-level astrometry, multi-band photometry and spectroscopy will provide individual distances, motions, effective temperatures, gravities and metallicities for vast numbers of AGB stars in the Galaxy and beyond. Reliable ages of AGB stars can be determined to distances of \~200 kpc in a wide range of ages and metallicities, allowing star formation histories to be studied in a diversity of astrophysical environments.
We here present our first attempt to use Globular Clusters as tracers of their parent galaxy's formation history. Globular Cluster Systems of most early-type galaxies feature two peaks in their optical colour distributions. Blue-peak Globular Clusters are generally believed to be old and metal-poor. The ages, metallicities, and the origin of the red-peak Globular Clusters are being debated. We here present our analysis of the ages and metallicities of the red peak Globular Clusters in the Virgo S0 NGC 4570 using deep Ks-band photometry from NTT/SOFI (ESO program ID 079.B-0511) for the red-peak…
40 galaxies are currently known as, or suspected to be Local Group members within a radius of 1.8 Mpc. 37 of these galaxies are dwarf galaxies with M_B > -18.5 mag. I present a compilation of the star formation histories of dwarf irregulars, dwarf ellipticals, and dwarf spheroidals in the Local Group, and visualize their evolutionary histories through Hodge's population boxes. The study of these star formation histories is a multi-parameter problem: Ages, metallicities, population fractions, and spatial variations must be determined, which depend crucially on the knowledge of reddening and dis…
We use a semi-analytic model of galaxy formation to study signatures of large-scale modulations in the star formation (SF) activity in galaxies. In order to do this we carefully define local and global estimators of the density around galaxies. The former are computed using a voronoi tessellation technique and the latter are parameterised by the normalised distance to haloes and voids, in terms of the virial and void radii, respectively. As a function of local density, galaxies show a strong modulation in their SF, a result that is in agreement with those from several authors. When taking subs…
We compute new population synthesis models of Lick absorption line indices with variable alpha/Fe ratios and use them to derive average ages, metallicities, and alpha/Fe element enhancements for a sample of 126 field and cluster early-type galaxies. Calibrating the models on galactic globular clusters, we show that any population synthesis model being based on stellar libraries of the Milky Way is intrinsically biased towards super-solar alpha/Fe ratios at metallicities below solar. We correct for this bias, so that the models presented here reflect constant alpha/Fe ratios at all metallicitie…
We study the central (inner few hundred parsecs) stellar populations of four starburst galaxies (NGC34, NGC1614, NGC3310 and NGC7714) in the near-infrared (NIR), from 0.8 to 2.4microns, by fitting combinations of stellar population models of various ages and metallicities. The NIR spectra of these galaxies feature many absorption lines. For the first time, we fit simultaneously as much as 15 absorption features in the NIR. The observed spectra are best explained by stellar populations containing a sizable amount (20 to 56 % by mass) of ~1Gyr old stellar population with Thermally Pulsing-Asympt…
We present the effects due to alpha-element enhancement on surface brightness fluctuation magnitudes and broad-band colors in order to investigate the calibration zero-point. We study these effects at ages covering 0.1 to 13 Gyr and metallicities of Z=0.0003 to 0.04 using the Teramo group's isochrones, BaSTI. Our preliminary results indicate that alpha-enhanced models are needed to match massive red galaxies while solar-scaled models are fine for dwarf blue galaxies to reproduce their independently estimated ages and metallicities.
We argue that tracing star formation histories with ESA's space mission GAIA using main sequence turn-off (MSTO) point dating will mainly be effective in cases of mild interstellar extinction (E(B-V)<0.5). For higher reddenings the MSTO approach will be severely limited both in terms of traceable ages (t<0.5 Gyr at 8 kpc; E(B-V)=1.0) and/or distances (d<2 kpc for t=15 Gyr; E(B-V)=1.0), since the MSTO will be located at magnitudes too faint for GAIA. AGB stars may alternatively provide precise population ages with GAIA for a wide range of ages and metallicities, with traceable distances of up t…
We present narrow band photometry of 91 dwarf ellipticals in the Coma and Fornax clusters taken through the Stromgren (uvby) filter system. Dividing the sample by dwarf morphology into nucleated (dEN) and non-nucleated (dE) dwarfs reveals two distinct populations of early-type systems based on integrated colors. The class of dEN galaxies are redder in their continuum colors as compared to bright cluster ellipticals and dE type dwarfs, and their position in multi-color diagrams can only be explained by an older mean age for their underlying stellar populations. By comparison with the narrow ban…
We investigate, on the basis of CCD Stroemgren photometry, the ages and metallicities of six LMC clusters together with their surrounding field population. The clusters and metallicities are: NGC1651 (in the range [Fe/H]=-0.65 dex to -0.41 dex), NGC1711 (-0.57+/-0.17 dex), NGC 1806 (-0.71+/-0.23 dex), NGC2031 (-0.52+/-0.21 dex) and NGC2136/37 (-0.55+/-0.23 dex) and NGC2257 (-1.63+/-0.21 dex). In the cluster surroundings, we found about 650 field stars that were suitable to be used for a determination of an age-metallicity relation (AMR). Our method is to estimate ages for individual stars on t…
We present a new evolutionary synthesis (ES) tool specifically developed for the analysis of multi-color data of young star clusters (YSCs) in interacting galaxies. Our ESO/ST-ECF ASTROVIRTEL project provides an unprecedented database of UV--optical--NIR observations from the HST/WFPC2, HST/NICMOS and VLT data archives. Comparison of these data with ES models for clusters of various metallicities which include gaseous emission as well as various degrees of dust extinction, allows one to independently determine metallicities, ages and extinction for individual clusters. These, in turn, are the …
From observations of almost 500 RGB stars in 29 Galactic open and globular clusters, we have investigated the behaviour of the infrared Ca II triplet (8498, 8542 and 8662 Å) in the age range 13$\leq$Age/Gyr$\leq$0.25 and the metallicity range $-2.2\leq$ [Fe/H] $\leq$+0.47. These are the widest ranges of ages and metallicities in which the behaviour of the Ca II triplet lines has been investigated in a homogeneous way. We report the first empirical study of the variation of the CaII triplet lines strength, for given metallicities, with respect to luminosity. We find that the sequence defined by…
We present a metallicity distribution based on photometry and spectra for 442 omega Cen cluster members that lie at the main sequence turnoff region of the color-magnitude diagram. This distribution is similar to that found for the red giant branch. The distribution shows a sharp rise to a mean of [Fe/H] = -1.7 with a long tail to higher metallicities. Ages have then been determined for the stars using theoretical isochrones enabling the construction of an age-metallicity diagram. Interpretation of this diagram is complicated by the correlation of the errors in the metallicities and ages. Neve…
Globular Cluster Systems (GCSs) of most early-type galaxies feature two peaks in their optical colour distributions. Blue-peak GCs are believed to be old and metal-poor, whereas the ages, metallicities, and the origin of the red-peak GCs are still being debated. We obtained deep K-band photometry and combined it with HST observations in g and z to yield a full SED from optical to near-infrared. This now allows us to break the age-metallicity degeneracy. We used our evolutionary synthesis models GALEV for star clusters to compute a large grid of models with different metallicities and a wide ra…
