Using the hadronic matrix elements from the lattice, B_K and xi_s, involving only the 4-quark operators for Delta flavor (F) = 2 Hamiltonian relevant for K, B_d and B_s mixing, along with V_cb, we deduce a non-trivial constraint on the SM, sin (2 beta) = 0.87+-0.09. This deviates from direct experimental measurements via the tree process, b -> c c s as well as the one via the penguin-loop b -> s decays by around 2.1 and 2.7 sigma respectively. If these deviations are confirmed they would imply the presence of new physics rather pervasively in both B_d mixing (i.e. very likely in b -> d) as well as in b -> s transitions requiring a beyond the SM CP-odd phase. Consequently, improvements in the relevant lattice calculations should be given a high priority.
We present a new lattice study of the discrete beta function for SU(3) gauge theory with Nf=8 massless flavors of fermions in the fundamental representation. Using the gradient flow running coupling, and comparing two different nHYP-smeared staggered lattice actions, we calculate the 8-flavor step-scaling function at significantly stronger couplings than were previously accessible. Our continuum-extrapolated results for the discrete beta function show no sign of an IR fixed point up to couplings of g^2~14. At the same time, we find that the gradient flow coupling runs much more slowly than pre…
The fact that neutrinos are massive has been the most crucial evidence of physics beyond the Standard Model of elementary particles. To date, we still do not know how neutrinos get mass and why their mass is much smaller than that of their charged fermion cousins. The precise determination of the neutrino mass spectrum has become one of the central tasks of neutrino physics, providing critical input for understanding the nature of neutrino mass and extending our model. The present landscape of the neutrino mass spectrum is reviewed and explored in this article using data from the neutrino osci…
Neutrinoless double beta decay is one of the most sensitive approaches in non-accelerator particle physics to take us into a regime of physics beyond the standard model. This article is a brief review of the experiments in search of neutrinoless double beta decay from 76Ge. Following a brief introduction of the process of double beta decay from 76Ge, the results of the very first experiments IGEX and Heidelberg-Moscow which give indications of the existence of possible neutrinoless double beta decay mode has been reviewed. Then ongoing efforts to substantiate the early findings are presented a…
The various mechanisms for neutrinoless double beta decay in gauge theories are reviewed and the present experimental data is used to set limits on physics scenarios beyond the standard model. The positive indications for nonzero neutrino masses in various experiments such as those involving solar, atmospheric and accelerator neutrinos are discussed and it is pointed out how some neutrino mass textures consistent with all data can be tested by the ongoing double beta decay experiments. Finally, the outlook for observable neutrinoless double beta decay signal in grand unified theories is discus…
The indications in favor of the existence of light sterile neutrinos at the eV scale found in short-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments is reviewed. The future perspectives of short-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments and the connections with beta-decay measurements of the neutrino masses and with neutrinoless double-beta decay experiments are discussed.
Recently a positive indication of the neutrinoless double beta decay has been announced. We study the implications of this result taking into consideration earlier results on atmospheric neutrinos and solar neutrinos. We also include in our discussions the recent results from SNO and K2K. We point out that on the confidence level given for the double beta signal, the neutrino mass matrices are now highly constrained. All models predicting Dirac masses are ruled out and leptogenesis becomes a natural choice. Only the degenerate and the inverted hierarchical solutions are allowed for the three g…
We consider the interpretation of the MiniBooNE low-energy anomaly and the Gallium radioactive source experiments anomaly in terms of short-baseline electron neutrino disappearance in the framework of 3+1 four-neutrino mixing schemes. The separate fits of MiniBooNE and Gallium data are highly compatible, with close best-fit values of the effective oscillation parameters Delta m^2 and sin^2 2 theta. The combined fit gives Delta m^2 >~ 0.1 eV^2 and 0.11 < sin^2 2 theta < 0.48 at 2 sigma. We consider also the data of the Bugey and Chooz reactor antineutrino oscillation experiments and the limits …
Recent development in exploring flavour dynamics in the supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model is reviewed. Emphasis is put on possible interesting effects in b-physics arising for large values of tan beta both in the case of minimal flavour violation and in the case of flavour violation originating in the sfermion sector. The importance of the flavour changing neutral Higgs boson couplings generated by the scalar penguin diagrams and their role in the interplay of neutral B-meson mixing and B^0_{d,s} --> mu^+ mu^- decays is discussed. It is pointed out that observation of the B^0_d --…
We discuss the sensitivities of present-day electroweak precision data to the possible scale of supersymmetry within the constrained minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model (CMSSM). Our analysis is based on M_W, sin^2 theta_eff, (g-2)_mu, BR(b -> s gamma), and the lightest MSSM Higgs boson mass, M_h. We display the impact of the recent reduction in m_t from 178.0 +- 4.3 GeV to 172.7 +- 2.9 GeV on the interpretation of the precision observables. We show the currently preferred values of the CMSSM mass scale m_{1/2} based on a global chi^2 fit, assuming that the lightest supersymm…
We have analyzed the results of the latest terrestrial neutrino oscillation experiments in the framework of a model with mixing of three massive neutrinos and a neutrino mass hierarchy ($ m_1 << m_2 << m_3 $). In this model, oscillations of the terrestrial neutrinos are characterized by three parameters, $ Δm^2 = m_3^2 - m_1^2 $ and the squared moduli of the two mixing matrix elements $U_{e3}$ and $U_{\mu3}$. Using the results of disappearance experiments and solar neutrino experiments, it is shown that only two regions of possible values of $|U_{e3}|^2$ and $|U_{\mu3}|^2$ are allowed: I. $|U_…
The constraints on the value of the CKM phase gamma that may be achieved by prospective measurements of sin(2 beta) and sin(2 beta + gamma) are discussed. Significant constraints require quite small errors, and may depend on assumptions about strong phases. The measurement of sin(2 beta + gamma) combined with other experiments could provide valuable limits on new physics in Bd-Bdbar mixing.
We examine the constraints on the MNS lepton mixing matrix =66rom the present and future experimental data of the neutrino oscillation, tritium beta decay, and neutrinoless double beta decay for Majorana neutrinos. We show that the small mixing angle solutions for solar neutrino problem are disfavored for small averaged mass ($<m_ν>$) of neutrinoless double beta decay ($\leq 0.01$ eV) in the inverse neutrino mass hierarchy scenario. This is the case even in the normal mass hierarchy scenario except for very restrictive value of the averaged neutrino mass ($\bar{m_ν}$) of single beta decay. The…
We explore the would-be consequences of a low value of the CP-violating phase $\sin2β_{ψK}$. The importance of a reference triangle obtained from measurements that are independent of $B$--$\bar B$ and $K$--$\bar K$ mixing is stressed. It can be used to extract separately potential New Physics contributions to mixing in the $B_d$, $B_s$ and $K$ systems. We discuss several constructions of this triangle, which will be feasible in the near future. The discrete ambiguity is at most two-fold and eventually can be completely removed. Simultaneously, it will be possible to probe for New Physics in lo…
Recent precise measurements of sin 2 beta from the B-factories (BABAR and BELLE) and a better known strange quark mass from lattice QCD make precision tests of predictive texture models possible. The models tested include those hierarchical N-zero textures classified by Ramond, Roberts and Ross, as well as any other hierarchical matrix Ansatz with non-zero 12 = 21 and vanishing 11 and 13 elements. We calculate the maximally allowed value for sin 2 beta in these models and show that all the aforementioned models with vanishing 11 and 13 elements are ruled out at the 3 sigma level. While at pres…
Neglecting smaller amplitudes the time-dependent CP asymmetry in penguin-dominated b -> s q \bar q transitions (such as B -> phi K_S) is expected to equal sin(2 beta), an expectation not borne out by the present average experimental data. I compute and discuss the correction due to the smaller amplitudes in the framework of QCD factorization.
Recently, the Babar and Belle collaborations have reported their first measurements of the CP-violating asymmetry in Bd --> psi KS, and more precise results will follow soon. We discuss what a future evidence for small sin(2 beta) could mean, contrasting the usual possibility of new physics in the Bd system, with the interesting alternative that the new physics effects are confined to the kaon system.
We demonstrate that the further indication of a possible annual modulation effect, singled out by the DAMA/NaI experiment for WIMP direct detection, is widely compatible with an interpretation in terms of a relic neutralino as the major component of dark matter in the Universe. We discuss the supersymmetric features of this neutralino in the Minimal Supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model (MSSM) and their implications for searches at accelerators.
We study the corrections to the determination of sin(2 beta) from the time dependent CP asymmetry of B^0 to J/Psi K_S which arise in the standard model. Although a precise prediction of these corrections is not possible we find that they are indeed extremely small, of the order of less than a per mil of the observed value. This means in turn that any deviation visible at the B factories will be a clear signal for new physics.
In this talk we show that, unlike other pure $b\to d$ penguin processes, the decay $\bs(t)\toϕ\ks$ is dominated by a single amplitude, that of the internal $t$-quark. Thus, the indirect CP asymmetry in this decay probes $\sin 2β$. This cancellation holds for most part of the parameter space and error on $\sin 2β$ is less than 10%. By measuring the direct CP asymmetry, one can get a better idea of the probable error on $\sin 2β$.
We provide a review of predictions for sin 2beta_eff in b->s penguin dominated modes based on 1/m_b expansion and/or SU(3) flavor symmetry. The experimental results are consistently lower than the theoretical predictions. In order to interpret whether this effect is a sign of new physics contributions or can be explained away within the Standard Model a theoretical input cannot be avoided. The effect survives at a level larger than 2.1 sigma in a conservative average over different modes that includes theoretical predictions.
We emphasize the crucial r\^ ole played by non-factorizable phases in the analysis of the Yukawa flavour structure performed in weak bases with Hermitian mass matrices and with vanishing $(1,1)$ entries. We show that non-factorizable phases are important in order to generate a sufficiently large $\sin 2 β$. A method is suggested to reconstruct the flavour structure of Yukawa couplings from input experimental data both in this Hermitian basis and in a non-Hermitian basis with a maximal number of texture zeros. The corresponding Froggatt--Nielsen patterns are presented in both cases.
Surveying known hadronic rare B decays, we find that the factorization approximation can give a coherent account of $Kπ$, $ππ$ and $ρ^0π^+$ data and give predictions for $ω^0π^+$, $ρπ$ and $K^*π$ modes, {\it if ${Re}V_{ub}$ is taken as negative} (in standard phase convention) rather than positive. As further confirmation, we expect a lower $\sin2β$ value at B Factories as compared to current fits, and $B_s$ mixing close to LEP bounds at SLD and CDF.
After more than forty years since the basic standard model for supernovae Ia was proposed many astronomers are still hopeful that this phenomenon will ultimately be understood in terms of Newtonian gravity plus nuclear and particle physics as they existed in the 1930's. In spite of this fact there are at least six nagging puzzles in supernova physics that suggest some radical new physics input may be necessary. "Radical" in this context means a physics idea that did not exist in the 1930's and that is still not experimentally confirmed in 2017.
We assume that the Pauli exclusion principle is violated for neutrinos, and thus, neutrinos obey at least partly the Bose-Einstein statistics. The parameter sin^2 chi is introduced that characterizes the bosonic (symmetric) fraction of the neutrino wave function. Consequences of the violation of the exclusion principle for the two-neutrino double beta decays are considered. This violation strongly changes the rates of the decays and modifies the energy and angular distributions of the emitted electrons. Pure bosonic neutrinos are excluded by the present data. In the case of partly bosonic (or …
All the possible schemes of neutrino mixing with four massive neutrinos inspired by the existing experimental indications in favor of neutrino mixing are considered in a model independent way. Assuming that in short-baseline experiments only one mass-squared difference is relevant, it is shown that the scheme with a neutrino mass hierarchy is not compatible with the experimental results. Only two schemes with two pairs of neutrinos with close masses separated by a mass difference of the order of 1 eV are in agreement with the results of all experiments. One of these schemes leads to possibly o…
