This paper presents the Anisotropic selection scheme for cellular Genetic Algorithms (cGA). This new scheme allows to enhance diversity and to control the selective pressure which are two important issues in Genetic Algorithms, especially when trying to solve difficult optimization problems. Varying the anisotropic degree of selection allows swapping from a cellular to an island model of parallel genetic algorithm. Measures of performances and diversity have been performed on one well-known problem: the Quadratic Assignment Problem which is known to be difficult to optimize. Experiences show that, tuning the anisotropic degree, we can find the accurate trade-off between cGA and island models to optimize performances of parallel evolutionary algorithms. This trade-off can be interpreted as the suitable degree of migration among subpopulations in a parallel Genetic Algorithm.
How to maintain relative high diversity is important to avoid premature convergence in population-based optimization methods. Island model is widely considered as a major approach to achieve this because of its flexibility and high efficiency. The model maintains a group of sub-populations on different islands and allows sub-populations to interact with each other via predefined migration policies. However, current island model has some drawbacks. One is that after a certain number of generations, different islands may retain quite similar, converged sub-populations thereby losing diversity an…
Cellular automata are discrete and computational models thatcan be shown as general models of complexity. They are used in varied applications to derive the generalized behavior of the presented model. In this paper we have took one such application. We have made an effort to perform edge detection on an image using genetic algorithm. The purpose and the intention here is to analyze the capability and performance of the suggested genetic algorithm. Genetic algorithms are used to depict or obtain a general solution of given problem. Using this feature of GA we have tried to evolve the cellular …
Transfer Optimization is an incipient research area dedicated to solving multiple optimization tasks simultaneously. Among the different approaches that can address this problem effectively, Evolutionary Multitasking resorts to concepts from Evolutionary Computation to solve multiple problems within a single search process. In this paper we introduce a novel adaptive metaheuristic algorithm to deal with Evolutionary Multitasking environments coined as Adaptive Transfer-guided Multifactorial Cellular Genetic Algorithm (AT-MFCGA). AT-MFCGA relies on cellular automata to implement mechanisms in o…
We apply two evolutionary search algorithms: Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Genetic Algorithms (GAs) to the design of Cellular Automata (CA) that can perform computational tasks requiring global coordination. In particular, we compare search efficiency for PSO and GAs applied to both the density classification problem and to the novel generation of 'chaotic' CA. Our work furthermore introduces a new variant of PSO, the Binary Global-Local PSO (BGL-PSO).
There are a number of ways to procedurally generate interesting three-dimensional shapes, and a method where a cellular neural network is combined with a mesh growth algorithm is presented here. The aim is to create a shape from a genetic code in such a way that a crude search can find interesting shapes. Identical neural networks are placed at each vertex of a mesh which can communicate with neural networks on neighboring vertices. The output of the neural networks determine how the mesh grows, allowing interesting shapes to be produced emergently, mimicking some of the complexity of biologic…
Personalisation in smart phones requires adaptability to dynamic context based on user mobility, application usage and sensor inputs. Current personalisation approaches, which rely on static logic that is developed a priori, do not provide sufficient adaptability to dynamic and unexpected context. This paper proposes genetic programming (GP), which can evolve program logic in realtime, as an online learning method to deal with the highly dynamic context in smart phone personalisation. We introduce the concept of collaborative smart phone personalisation through the GP Island Model, in order to…
Heterogeneous Parallel Island Models (HePIMs) run different bio-inspired algorithms (BAs) in their islands. From a variety of communication topologies and migration policies fine-tuned for homogeneous PIMs (HoPIMs), which run the same BA in all their islands, previous work introduced HePIMs that provided competitive quality solutions regarding the best-adapted BA in HoPIMs. This work goes a step forward, maintaining the population diversity provided by HePIMs, and increasing their flexibility, allowing BA reconfiguration on islands during execution: according to their performance, islands may …

Multitasking optimization is an incipient research area which is lately gaining a notable research momentum. Unlike traditional optimization paradigm that focuses on solving a single task at a time, multitasking addresses how multiple optimization problems can be tackled simultaneously by performing a single search process. The main objective to achieve this goal efficiently is to exploit synergies between the problems (tasks) to be optimized, helping each other via knowledge transfer (thereby being referred to as Transfer Optimization). Furthermore, the equally recent concept of Evolutionary …
Genetic algorithm (GA) is a stochastic metaheuristic process consisting on the evolution of a population of candidate solutions for a given optimization problem. By extension, multipopulation genetic algorithm (MPGA) aims for efficiency by evolving many populations, or islands, in parallel and performing migrations between them periodically. The connectivity between islands constrains the directions of migration and characterizes MPGA as a dynamic process over a network. As such, predicting the evolution of the quality of the solutions is a difficult challenge, implying in the waste of compute…

A Genetic Algorithm (GA) is proposed in which each member of the population can change schemata only with its neighbors according to a rule. The rule methodology and the neighborhood structure employ elements from the Cellular Automata (CA) strategies. Each member of the GA population is assigned to a cell and crossover takes place only between adjacent cells, according to the predefined rule. Although combinations of CA and GA approaches have appeared previously, here we rely on the inherent self-organizing features of CA, rather than on parallelism. This conceptual shift directs us toward th…
Reversible Cellular Automata (RCA) are a particular kind of shift-invariant transformations characterized by a dynamics composed only of disjoint cycles. They have many applications in the simulation of physical systems, cryptography and reversible computing. In this work, we formulate the search of a specific class of RCA -- namely, those whose local update rules are defined by conserved landscapes -- as an optimization problem to be tackled with Genetic Algorithms (GA) and Genetic Programming (GP). In particular, our experimental investigation revolves around three different research questio…
This works proposes a methodology to searching for automatically Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) by using Cellular Genetic Algorithm (CGA). The goal of this methodology is to find compact networks whit good performance for classification problems. The main reason for developing this work is centered at the difficulties of configuring compact ANNs with good performance rating. The use of CGAs aims at seeking the components of the RNA in the same way that a common Genetic Algorithm (GA), but it has the differential of incorporating a Cellular Automaton (CA) to give location for the GA individua…

COVID-19 pandemic is severely impacting the lives of billions across the globe. Even after taking massive protective measures like nation-wide lockdowns, discontinuation of international flight services, rigorous testing etc., the infection spreading is still growing steadily, causing thousands of deaths and serious socio-economic crisis. Thus, the identification of the major factors of this infection spreading dynamics is becoming crucial to minimize impact and lifetime of COVID-19 and any future pandemic. In this work, a probabilistic cellular automata based method has been employed to model…
This paper describes a method that automatically searches Artificial Neural Networks using Cellular Genetic Algorithms. The main difference of this method for a common genetic algorithm is the use of a cellular automaton capable of providing the location for individuals, reducing the possibility of local minima in search space. This method employs an evolutionary search for simultaneous choices of initial weights, transfer functions, architectures and learning rules. Experimental results have shown that the developed method can find compact, efficient networks with a satisfactory generalizatio…
We present an automatic multilayer power plane generation method to accelerate the design of printed circuit boards (PCB). In PCB design, while automatic solvers have been developed to predict important indicators such as the IR-drop, power integrity, and signal integrity, the generation of the power plane itself still largely relies on laborious manual methods. Our automatic power plane generation approach is based on genetic optimization combined with a multilayer perceptron and is able to automatically generate power planes across a diverse set of problems with varying levels of difficulty.…
In this paper we consider the identification problem of Cellular Automata (CAs). The problem is defined and solved in the context of partial observations with time gaps of unknown length, i.e. pre-recorded, partial configurations of the system at certain, unknown time steps. A solution method based on a modified variant of a Genetic Algorithm (GA) is proposed and illustrated with brief experimental results.

Multitasking optimization is a recently introduced paradigm, focused on the simultaneous solving of multiple optimization problem instances (tasks). The goal of multitasking environments is to dynamically exploit existing complementarities and synergies among tasks, helping each other through the transfer of genetic material. More concretely, Evolutionary Multitasking (EM) regards to the resolution of multitasking scenarios using concepts inherited from Evolutionary Computation. EM approaches such as the well-known Multifactorial Evolutionary Algorithm (MFEA) are lately gaining a notable resea…
The renaissance of neural architecture search (NAS) has seen classical methods such as genetic algorithms (GA) and genetic programming (GP) being exploited for convolutional neural network (CNN) architectures. While recent work have achieved promising performance on visual perception tasks, the direct encoding scheme of both GA and GP has functional complexity deficiency and does not scale well on large architectures like CNN. To address this, we present a new generative encoding scheme -- $symbolic\ linear\ generative\ encoding$ (SLGE) -- simple, yet powerful scheme which embeds local graph t…
Cell formation is a critical step in the design of cellular manufacturing systems. Recently, it was tackled using a cut-based-graph-partitioning model. This model meets real-life production systems requirements as it uses the actual amount of product flows, it looks for the suitable number of cells, and it takes into account the natural constraints such as operation sequences, maximum cell size, cohabitation and non-cohabitation constraints. Based on this model, we propose an original encoding representation to solve the problem by using a genetic algorithm. We discuss the performance of this …
