We present simulation results on the equilibrium relaxation of Brownian planar rotors based on a uniformly frustrated XY model on a square lattice. The rotational relaxation exhibits typical dynamic features of fragile supercooled liquids including the two-step relaxation. We observe a dynamic cross-over from high temperature regime with Arrhenius behavior to low temperaure regime with temperature-dependent activation energy. A consistent picture for the observed slow dynamics can be given in terms of caging effect and thermal activation across potential barriers in the energy landscapes.
In this work we experimentally study a granular rotor which is similar to the famous Smoluchowski-Feynman device and which consists of a rotor with four vanes immersed in a granular gas. Each side of the vanes can be composed of two different materials, creating a rotational asymmetry and turning the rotor into a ratchet. When the granular temperature is high, the rotor is in movement all the time, and its angular velocity distribution is well described by the Brownian Limit discussed in previous works. When the granular temperature is lowered considerably we enter the so-called Single Kick Li…
We present the exact analysis of a chiral Brownian motor and heat pump. Optimization of the construction predicts, for a nanoscale device, frequencies of the order of kHz and cooling rates of the order of femtojoule per second.
A Brownian pump of particles powered by a stochastic flashing ratchet mechanism is studied. The pumping device is embedded in a finite region and bounded by particle reservoirs. In the steady state, we exactly calculate the spatial density profile, the concentration ratio between both reservoirs and the particle flux. A simple numerical scheme is presented allowing for the consistent evaluation of all such observable quantities.
We study stochastic particle transport between two reservoirs along a channel, where the particles are pumped against a bias by a traveling wave potential. It is shown that phase transitions of period-averaged densities or currents occur inside the channel when exclusion interactions between the particles are taken into account. These transitions reflect those known for the asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP). We argue that their occurrence is a generic feature of Brownian motors operating in open systems.
A Brownian pump in nonlinear diffusive media is investigated in the presence of an unbiased external force. The pumping system is embedded in a finite region and bounded by two particle reservoirs. In the adiabatic limit, we obtain the analytical expressions of the current and the pumping capacity as a function of temperature for normal diffusion, subdiffusion and superdiffusion. It is found that important anomalies are detected in comparison to the normal diffusion case. The superdiffusive regime, compared with the normal one, exhibits an opposite current for low temperatures. In subdiffusive…
The energetics of a Brownian heat engine and heat pump driven by position dependent temperature, known as the Büttiker-Landauer heat engine and heat pump, is investigated by numerical simulations of the inertial Langevin equation. We identify parameter values for optimal performance of the heat engine and heat pump. Our results qualitatively differ from approaches based on the overdamped model. The behavior of the heat engine and heat pump, in the linear response regime is examined under finite time conditions and we find that the efficiency is lower than that of an endoreversible engine worki…

We address the question of transport of heat, in out-of-equilibrium systems. The experimental set-up consists in two coupled granular gas Non-Equilibrium Steady State (NESS) heat baths, in which Brownian-like rotors are imbedded. These rotors are electro-mechanically coupled thanks to DC micro-motors, through a resistor $R$, such that energy flows between them. The average flux depends linearly in the difference of the baths' temperature. Varying $R$ allows to extrapolate in the non-dissipative coupling limit ($R\rightarrow0$). We show that, in this limit, the heat flux obeys the Fluctuation T…
We consider the overdamped motion of Brownian particles, interacting via particle exclusion, in an external potential that varies with time and space. We show that periodic potentials that maintain specific position-dependent phase relations generate time-averaged directed current of particles. We obtain analytic results for a lattice version of the model using a recently developed perturbative approach. Many interesting features like particle-hole symmetry, current reversal with changing density, and system-size dependence of current are obtained. We propose possible experiments to test our p…
