We present $K$-band spectra of the near infrared counterparts to IRS2E and IRS2W which is associated with the ultracompact HII region W51d, both of them embedded sources in the Galactic compact HII region W51 IRS2. The high spatial resolution observations were obtained with the laser guide star facility and Near infrared Integral Field Spectrograph (NIFS) mounted at the Gemini North observatory. The spectrum of the ionizing source of W51d shows the photospheric features NIII (21155 Å) in emission and HeII (21897 Å) in absorption which lead us to classify it as an young O3 type star. We detected CO overtone in emission at 23000 Åin the spectrum of IRS2E, suggesting that it is a massive young object still surrounded by an accretion disc, probably transitioning from the hot core phase to an ultracompact HII region.
9C J1503+4528 is a very young CSS radio galaxy, with an age of order 10^4 years. This source is an ideal laboratory for the study of the intrinsic host galaxy/IGM properties, radio source interactions, evidence for young stellar populations and the radio source triggering mechanism. Here we present the results of a spectroscopic analysis of this source, considering each of these aspects of radio source physics.
BVI photometry (from South Africa Astron. Obs.), Echelle high resolution spectroscopy and AFOSC integral field spectroscopy (from Asiago, Italy) of the young open cluster NGC 6604 are presented. Age, distance, reddening, membership, radial and rotational velocities are derived and discussed. An age of 5 million years, a distance of 1.7 kpc and a reddening E(B-V)=1.02 are found. The cluster radial velocity is in agreement with the Hron (1987) model for the Galaxy disk rotation. Pre-ZAMS objects are not present down to M_V = +1.5 mag.
We have developed an efficient photometric technique for identifying young early-type galaxy candidates using a combination of photometric redshifts, spectral-type classification, and optical/near-infrared colors. Applying our technique to the GOODS HST/ACS and VLT/ISAAC data we have selected a complete and homogeneous sample of young elliptical candidates among early-type field galaxies. The distribution of structural parameters for these candidates shows that their selection, which is based on early spectral types, is fully consistent with early morphological types. We investigate the evolut…
We present 1.4 to 2.5 um integral field spectroscopy of 16 stars in the Braid Nebula star formation region in Cygnus OB7. These data forms one aspect of a large-scale multi-wavelength survey aimed at determining an unbiased estimate of the number, mass distribution, and evolutionary state of the young stars within this one square degree area of the previously poorly studied Lynds 1003 molecular cloud. Our new spectroscopic data, when combined with 2MASS near-IR photometry, provide evidence of membership of many of these objects in the regions pre-main sequence population. We discuss both the c…
We have carried out near-infrared spectroscopic observations of 23 very low-luminosity young stellar object (YSO) candidates and 5 their companions in Heiles Cloud 2, one of the densest parts of the Taurus molecular cloud. Twelve objects were confirmed as YSOs by Br gamma feature. The effective temperatures of the YSOs and of the companions are estimated from the 2.26 micron feature, the 2.21 micron feature, and the H2O band strengths. Detailed comparisons of our photometric and spectroscopic observations with evolutionary tracks on the HR diagram suggest some objects to be very low-mass YSOs.
We present a new method of quantifying the mass fraction of young stars in galaxies by analyzing near-ultraviolet (NUV)-optical colors. We focus our attention on early-type cluster galaxies, whose star formation history is at present undetermined. Rest-frame NUV (F300W) and optical (F702W) images of cluster Abell 851 (z=0.41) using HST/WFPC2 allow us to determine a NUV-optical color-magnitude relation, whose slope is incompatible with a monolithic scenario for star formation at high redshift. A degeneracy between a young stellar component and its fractional mass contribution to the galaxy is f…
(1270) Datura is the largest member of a very young asteroid cluster that was thought to be broken-up 0.45 Myr ago. The light-curve and the rotation-resolved reflectance spectra (0.6 um - 1.0 um) were observed in order to find "fresh" surface. Our data show no significant spectral variation along the rotation phase. The depth of the 0.95 um absorption band, which indicates the degree of space weathering, was similar to that of an old S-type asteroid. This suggests that the reflectance spectrum in this wavelength range changes rapidly and saturates the depth of the 0.95 um absorption in less th…
Using the NIRSPEC spectrograph at Keck II, we have obtained H and K-band echelle spectra for a young (10-15 Myr), luminous (MV=-13.2) super-star cluster in the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 6946. From spectral synthesis and equivalent width measurements we obtain for the first time accurate abundances and abundance patterns in an extragalactic super-star cluster. We find [Fe/H]=-0.45+/-0.08 dex, an average alpha-enhancement of +0.22+/-0.1 dex, and a relatively low 12C/13C~ 8+/-2 isotopic ratio. We also measure a velocity dispersion of ~9.1 km/s, in agreement with previous estimates. We conclude tha…
We present an X-ray study of the high metallicity young open cluster Blanco 1 based on XMM--Newton data. X-ray spectroscopy of cluster members is presented for the first time as well as new X-ray distribution functions of late-type stars. We detected all known dF and dG stars in the EPIC field and 80% and 90% of dK and dM stars, respectively. The X-ray spectral analysis of the X-ray brightest cluster stars and X-ray color analysis of a larger sample show that a model with two temperatures (at about 0.3 and 1 keV) explains the quiescent activity phase spectra. We discuss also the nature of unid…
We present results from an extensive spectroscopic survey in the 3-5 micron wavelength region of low-mass young stellar objects using VLT-ISAAC. Medium resolution spectra (R ~ 1000-10000) of young embedded stars in the mid-infrared allow for detailed studies of ro-vibrational lines from molecular gas, interstellar ices and Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs). By taking advantage of this wide range of molecular tracers available within a few spectral settings, the survey has helped to constrain the chemical evolution of cold molecular material in low-mass star forming regions as well as the…
We have obtained high resolution (R = 10,000) K-band spectra of candidate young massive stars deeply embedded in high-mass star-forming regions. These objects were selected from a near-infrared survey of 44 regions of high-mass star-formation (Kaper et al, 2006). In these clusters, 38 OB stars are identified whose K-band spectra are dominated by photospheric emission. In almost all those stars, the K-band spectra are indistinguishable from field stars. However, in some stars the profile of the Bracket gamma line is different (less deep, or absent) from those of the O field stars. One of the ex…
We present an analysis of candidate members of the Eta Cha and MBM 12A young associations. For an area of 0.7 deg^2 toward Eta Cha, we have performed a search for members of the association by combining JHK_s photometry from 2MASS and i photometry from DENIS with followup optical spectroscopy at Magellan Observatory. We report the discovery of three new members with spectral types of M5.25-M5.75, corresponding to masses of 0.13-0.08 M_sun by theoretical evolutionary models. Two and three of these members were found independently by Lyo and coworkers and Song and coworkers, respectively. Meanwh…
We present Gemini near-infrared adaptive optics imaging and spectroscopy of a planetary mass candidate companion to 1RXS J160929.1-210524, a roughly solar-mass member of the 5 Myr-old Upper Scorpius association. The object, separated by 2.22" or 330 AU at ~150 pc, has infrared colors and spectra suggesting a temperature of 1800(-100/+200) K, and spectral type of L4(-2/+1). The H- and K-band spectra provide clear evidence of low surface gravity, and thus youth. Based on the widely used DUSTY models, we infer a mass of 8(-2/+4)Mjupiter. If gravitationally bound, this would be the lowest mass com…
We present the first results of AKARI Infrared Camera near-infrared spec- troscopic survey of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). We detected absorption features of the H2O ice 3.05 um and the CO2 ice 4.27 um stretching mode toward seven massive young stellar objects (YSOs). These samples are for the first time spectroscopically confirmed to be YSOs. We used a curve-of-growth method to evaluate the column densities of the ices and derived the CO2/H2O ratio to be 0.45 pm 0.17. This is clearly higher than that seen in Galactic massive YSOs (0.17 pm 0.03). We suggest that the strong ultraviolet rad…
We present the first thermal-infrared spectra of an extra-galactic Young Stellar Object (YSO), IRAS05328-6827 in the HII region LHA 120-N148 in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The observed and modelled spectral energy distribution reveals a massive YSO, M=20 Msun, which is heavily-embedded and probably still accreting. The reduced dust content as a consequence of the lower metallicity of the LMC allows a unique view into this object, and together with a high C/O ratio may be responsible for the observed low abundance of water ice and relatively high abundances of methanol and CO2 ices.
We present Keck/LRIS spectra for 11 old globular clusters in the S0-type galaxy NGC 1023 and 2 young blue clusters in the nearby companion NGC 1023A. Analysis of the spectra of 7 old clusters with sufficient S/N shows generally good agreement between spectroscopic and previous photometric metallicity estimates, but the integrated colors of two clusters are too blue for their spectroscopic metallicities. Although the cluster ages are not well constrained, they are most likely similar to those of Milky Way globular clusters and certainly older than about 5 Gyr. The brightest GC in the sample sho…
An overview is given of multiwavelength observations of young supernova remnants, with a focus on the observational signatures of efficient cosmic ray acceleration. Some of the effects that may be attributed to efficient cosmic ray acceleration are the radial magnetic fields in young supernova remnants, magnetic field amplification as determined with X-ray imaging spectroscopy, evidence for large post-shock compression factors, and low plasma temperatures, as measured with high resolution optical/UV/X-ray spectroscopy. Special emphasis is given to spectroscopy of post-shock plasma's, which off…
We obtained medium-resolution spectra of the bona-fide brown dwarf Cha H$α$ 1, the five brown dwarf candidates Cha H$α$ 2 to 6, two additional late M-type brown dwarf candidates, all originally selected by H$α$ emission, and four previously known T Tauri stars, all located in Chamaeleon I. The spectral types of our targets range down to M8. We show their spectra and also list their IJK magnitudes from DENIS. All objects have radial velocities consistent with kinematic membership to Cha I and show Li 6708Åabsorption. Our Cha I brown dwarf candidates with lithium are young or sub-stellar or both…
We have observed the young Galactic supernova remnant Kes 75 with the Chandra X-ray Observatory. This object is one of an increasing number of examples of a shell-type remnant with a central extended radio core harboring a pulsar. Here we present a preliminary spatially resolved spectroscopic analysis of the Kes~75 system. We find that the spectrum of the pulsar is significantly harder than that of the wind nebula, and both of these components can be isolated from the diffuse thermal emission that seems to follow the same distribution as the extended radio shell. When we characterize the therm…
Over the past decade, tremendous progress has been made in applying the techniques of MK classification to spectra obtained from 1-5 microns. This spectral region is rich in atomic and molecular features which are temperature and luminosity sensitive providing a powerful technique to study intrinsically red and/or heavily dust embedded stellar populations. We will summarize recent work with particular emphasis on data obtained for a set of 88 fundamental MK standards in the J-, H-, K-, and L-bands with the KPNO 4m FTS. One area that has benefited enormously from these efforts has been the stud…
Galaxy interactions are known to trigger starbursts. The young star clusters formed in mergers may be young globular clusters. The ages of these young star clusters yield the timing of interaction-triggered star formation and provide an important way to reconstruct the history of merging galaxies. Here we present the first results from our investigation into age and metallicity of twelve young clusters in the merging galaxy pair NGC 4676, using spectra from the multi-object Low Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (LRIS) on Keck. For ten clusters, comparison of the Balmer emission lines with model …
Using high resolution near-infrared spectroscopy with the Keck telescope, we have detected the radial velocity signatures of the cool secondary components in four optically identified pre-main-sequence, single-lined spectroscopic binaries. All are weak-lined T Tauri stars with well-defined center of mass velocities. The mass ratio for one young binary, NTTS 160905-1859, is M2/M1 = 0.18+/-0.01, the smallest yet measured dynamically for a pre-main-sequence spectroscopic binary. These new results demonstrate the power of infrared spectroscopy for the dynamical identification of cool secondaries. …
We present near-infrared J, H, and K_s images and K-band spectroscopy of two newly discovered stellar clusters at different stages of evolution. Our spectra suggest the presence of massive YSOs in the heavily embedded cluster in the star-forming region near radio source G353.4-0.4 and an O5-O6V star in the cluster near radio source G305+00.2. We determine a K-band luminosity function (KLF) for both clusters and an initial mass function (IMF) for the cluster near G305+00.2. The derived IMF slope is -1.5 if the KLF is used to derive the IMF and is -0.98 if the color-magnitude diagram and spectra…
UBVRI CCD photometry of a $2.^{\prime}1 \times 3.^{\prime}3$ field centered on the young open cluster Haffner~18 is presented and discussed. Spectroscopic classification of seven stars is also provided. 44 clusters members are identified, the earliest type being O6. The distance to the cluster is found to be 6.3 kpc, corresponding to a galactocentric distance of 12.7 kpc (for a Sun galactocentric distance of 8.5 kpc). Excellent fit to the observed main sequence is achieved by a solar composition isochrone of 2$\times 10^6$ years reddened by E$_{B-V}$=0.62 mag. Differential reddening of intra-c…
We use a purely data-driven rectified factor analysis to identify early-type galaxies with recent star formation in DR4 of the SDSS Spectroscopic Catalogue. We compare the spectra and environment of these galaxies with `normal' early-types, and a sample of independently selected E+A galaxies. We calculate the projected local galaxy surface density (Sigma_5 and Sigma_10) for each galaxy in our sample, and find that the dependence, on projected local density, of the properties of E+As is not significantly different from that of early-types with young stellar populations, dropping off rapidly tow…
We have analyzed an observation of the supernova remnant N132D in the Large Magellanic Cloud, performed with the Low Energy Concentrator Spectrometer (LECS) and the Medium Energy Concentrator Spectrometer (MECS) instruments on board the X-ray satellite BeppoSAX. Thanks to the good sensitivity of the LECS/MECS combination over the range 0.3--8.5~keV we were able to detect the presence of an additional hotter plasma with respect to what had been previously assumed for this remnant. This hotter component is the source of the Fe-K line emission visible in the spectrum. Using a two component NEI pl…
We present infrared H- and K-band spectra of a companion candidate 3" north of the young star GSC 08047-00232, a probable member of the nearby young Horologium association. From previously obtained JHK-band colors and the magnitude difference between primary and companion candidate, the latter could well be substellar (Neuh"auser et al. 2003) with the spectral type being roughly M7-L9 from the JHK colors (Chauvin et al. 2003). With the H- and K-band spectra now obtained with ISAAC at the VLT, the spectral type of the companion candidate is found to be M6-9.5. Assuming the same age and distance…
Some young star clusters show a degree of mass segregation that is inconsistent with the effects of standard two-body relaxation from an initially unsegregated system without substructure, in virial equilibrium, and it is unclear whether current cluster formation models can account for this degree of initial segregation in clusters of significant mass. In this Letter we demonstrate that mergers of small clumps that are either initially mass segregated, or in which mass segregation can be produced by two-body relaxation before they merge, generically lead to larger systems which inherit the pro…
High-quality K-band spectra of strongly reddened point sources, deeply embedded in (ultra-) compact HII regions, have revealed a population of 20 young massive stars showing no photospheric absorption lines, but sometimes strong Br-gamma emission. The Br-gamma equivalent widths occupy a wide range (from about 1 to over 100 A); the line widths of 100-200 km/s indicate a circumstellar rather than a nebular origin. The K-band spectra exhibit one or more features commonly associated with massive young stellar objects (YSOs) surrounded by circumstellar material: a very red colour (J-K) > 2, CO band…
Aims: We investigated in detail nine sources in the direction of the young sigma Orionis cluster, which is considered a unique site for studying stellar and substellar formation. The nine sources were selected because of some peculiar properties, such as extremely red infrared colours or too strong Halpha emission for their blue optical colours. Methods: We took high-quality, low-resolution spectroscopy (R ~ 500) of the nine targets with ALFOSC at the Nordic Optical Telescope. We also re-analyzed [24]-band photometry from MIPS/Spitzer and compiled the best photometry available at the ViJHKs pa…
The pulsar B1620-26 has two companions, one of stellar mass and one of planetary mass. We detected the stellar companion using Hubble Space Telescope observations. The color and magnitude of the stellar companion indicate that it is an undermassive white dwarf ($0.34 \pm 0.04 M_{\odot}$) of age $480\pm 140$ Myr. This places a constraint on the recent history of this triple system and supports a scenario in which the current configuration arose through a dynamical exchange interaction in the cluster core. This implies that planets may be relatively common in low-metallicity globular clusters an…
We present spectroscopy of candidate stellar and substellar members of the young cluster IC 348. Using the Florida Multi-Object Imaging Near-Infrared Grism Observational Spectrometer with the 4 meter telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory, we have obtained multi-object moderate-resolution (R=1000) J- and H-band spectra of 66 infrared sources (H=12-17) toward IC 348, many of which are difficult to observe spectroscopically at optical wavelengths (I>20) because they are highly reddened and/or intrinsically cool and red. We have also observed 19 known cluster members that have optical spectr…
Here we show preliminary calculations of the cooling and contraction of a 2 MJ planet. These calculations, which are being extended to 1-10 MJ, differ from other published "cooling tracks" in that they include a core accretion-gas capture formation scenario, the leading theory for the formation of gas giant planets. We find that the initial post-accretionary intrinsic luminosity of the planet is ~3 times less than previously published models which use arbitrary initial conditions. These differences last a few tens of millions of years. Young giant planets are intrinsically fainter than has bee…
We present the results of quantitative spectral analyses of ten apparently normal B-type stars. These stars were found to be young massive B-type stars at distances of z=2.6 to 7.6 kpc from the galactic plane based on their positions in the (Teff, log g) diagram, normal abundance patterns and/or large projected rotational velocities. We discuss formation scenarios (runaway star scenarios versus a scenario for star formation in the halo) by comparing times-of-flight and evolutionary time scales. For all stars (except SB 357 and HS 1914+7139) both the scales are similar, indicating that the star…
We present the results of a novel application of Bayesian modelling techniques, which, although purely data driven, have a physically interpretable result, and will be useful as an efficient data mining tool. We base our studies on the UV-to-optical spectra (observed and synthetic) of early-type galaxies. A probabilistic latent variable architecture is formulated, and a rigorous Bayesian methodology is employed for solving the inverse modelling problem from the available data. A powerful aspect of our formalism is that it allows us to recover a limited fraction of missing data due to incomplet…
The temperature, density and kinematics of the gas and dust surrounding the luminous young stellar object GL~2591 are investigated on scales as small as 100 AU, probed by 4.7 micron absorption spectroscopy, to over 60,000 AU, probed by single-dish submillimeter spectroscopy. These two scales are connected by interferometric 86-226 GHz images of size 60,000 AU and resolution 2000 AU in continuum and molecular lines. The data are used to constrain the physical structure of the envelope and investigate the influence of the young star on its immediate surroundings.
Broad-band photometric and moderate-resolution spectroscopic observations of the young eruptive star V1647 Ori, obtained between 28 August and 1 September 2008, are presented. The observed magnitudes and emission line equivalent widths of the star indicate that the initial conditions of the new outburst are very similar to those of the previous one in 2004.
ISO spectral observations of the supernova remnant RCW103 are presented. This object is the prototype of relatively young remnants with fast shocks interacting with dense interstellar medium. The spectrum is dominated by prominent lines of [NeII], [SiII], [FeII] and other low excitation species which provide, for the first time, a simple and reliable estimate of the gas abundances of refractory (Si, Fe, Ni) and non-refractory (Ne, P, S, Cl, Ar) species. Apart from nickel, all the derived abundances are close to solar, confirming that the shock has destroyed all dust grains. Like the optical ni…
Low-resolution UV-to-visual spectra of two candidate globular clusters in the merger remnant NGC 3921 are presented. These two clusters of apparent magnitude V = 22.2 (Mv = -12.5) lie at projected distances of ~5 kpc from the center and move with halo-type radial velocities relative to the local galaxy background. Their spectra show strong Balmer absorption lines indicative of main-sequence turnoffs dominated by A-type stars. Comparisons with model-cluster spectra computed by Bruzual & Charlot and others yield cluster ages in the range of 200-530 Myr, and metallicities about solar to within a …
The Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) was an extremely successful european space mission that gave us an unparallel view of the Universe in the infrared, and provided us with hundreds of observations of star forming regions and bipolar outflows. Three of the instrument teams, in charge of the infrared camera (CAM) and the two spectrometers at short and long wavelengths (SWS and LWS respectively), used a significant fraction of their guarantee time to study YSOs and outflows spectroscopically. In here, I will briefly review some of their main findings, particularly the detection of water, H2 rot…
We present the first results of a survey to obtain Integral Field Spectroscopy of merging galaxies along the Toomre Sequence. In the present work, we concentrate on the star cluster complexes in the Antennae galaxies (NGC 4038/39) in the overlap region as well as the nuclear region of NGC 4038. Using optical spectroscopy we derive the extinction age, metallicity, velocity, velocity dispersion of the gas and star formation rate for each of the eight complexes detected. We supplement this study with archival HST-WFPC2 U, B, V, H$α$, and I band imaging. Correcting the observed colours of the star…
Recent observations of nearby star forming regions have offered evidence that young brown dwarfs undergo a period of mass accretion analogous to the T Tauri phase observed in young stars. Brown dwarf analogs to stellar protostars, however, have yet to be definitively observed. These young, accreting objects would shed light on the nature of the dominant brown dwarf formation process, as well as provide ideal laboratories to investigate the dependence of the accretion mechanism on protostellar mass. Recent near infrared surveys have identified candidate proto-brown dwarfs and characterized low …
An optical spectrum of the Elson et al. (1998) candidate luminous white dwarf in the young LMC cluster NGC1818 shows conclusively that it is not a degenerate star. A model atmosphere fit gives T=31,500K and log g=4.4, typical of a garden-variety main sequence B star. However, if it is a true LMC member then the star is under-luminous by almost three magnitudes. Its position in the cluster colour-magnitude diagram also rules out the possibility that this is an ordinary B star. The luminosity is, however, consistent with a ~0.5 solar mass post-AGB or post-EHB object, although if it has evolved v…
9C J1503+4528 is a very young CSS radio galaxy, with an age of order 10^4 years. This source is therefore an ideal laboratory for the study ofthe intrinsic host galaxy/IGM properties, interactions between the radio source and surrounding ISM, links between star formation and AGN activity and the radio source triggering mechanism. Here we present the results of a spectroscopic analysis of this source, considering each of these aspects of radio source physics. We find that shock ionization by the young radio source is important in the central regions of the galaxy on scales similar to that of th…
This paper describes the first optical spectroscopic survey of class I sources (also known as embedded sources and protostars) in the Taurus-Auriga dark cloud. We detect 10 of the 24 known class I sources in the cloud at 5500-9000 A. All detected class I sources have strong H-alpha emission; most also have strong [O I] and [S II] emission. These data - together with high quality optical spectra of T Tauri stars in the Taurus-Auriga cloud - demonstrate that forbidden emission lines are stronger and more common in class I sources than in T Tauri stars. Our results also provide a clear discrimina…
We present spectra of the brightest member of the population of compact blue objects discovered in the peculiar galaxy NGC 1275 by Holtzman et al. using Hubble Space Telescope images. These spectra show strong Balmer absorption lines like those observed in A-type stars, as expected if the object is a young globular cluster. The age estimated from the strength of the Balmer lines is about 0.5 Gyr, although ages ranging from 0.1 Gyr to 0.9 Gyr can not be confidently excluded given current models of stellar populations. If these estimated ages are adopted for the young cluster population of NGC 1…
We investigate the conditions of star formation in the Large Magellanic Cloud. We have conducted a survey for water maser emission arising from massive young stellar objects in the 30 Doradus region (N 157) and several other H II regions in the Large Magellanic Cloud (N 105A, N 113 and N 160A). We have identified a new maser source in 30 Dor at the systemic velocity of the LMC. We have obtained 3-4 micron spectra, with the ESO Very Large Telescope, of two candidate young stellar objects. N 105A IRS1 shows H recombination line emission and its Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) and mid-infrared…
We present results from a series of follow-up observations of a sub-sample of the representative SAURON survey elliptical (E) and lenticular (S0) galaxies using the OASIS integral-field spectrograph. These observations focus on the central 10" x 10", with roughly double the spatial resolution of the SAURON observations. This increased spatial resolution reveals a number of interesting and previously unresolved features in the measured stellar kinematics and absorption-line strengths. We find that galaxies exhibiting the youngest global stellar populations (as measured with SAURON) often contai…
We present early results from the analysis of HST imaging observations for several pairs of interacting galaxies. We include two cases that were specifically chosen to represent a strong early (young) encounter (Arp 81 = NGC 6621/6622) and a weak late (old) encounter (Arp 297 = NGC 5752/5754). The goals of the project include a determination of the timing, frequency, strength, and characteristics of the young star clusters formed in these two limiting cases of tidal encounters.
Ultra-cool dwarfs have been defined as dwarfs with spectral types of M7 or later (Kirkpatrick, Henry, & Irwin 1997) and thus include the new L and T spectral classes. The previous IAU report on ultra-cool dwarfs in 1999 described the optical and IR spectral features that characterize these spectral types. In this report, I review the latest progress on the spectral classification of ultra-cool dwarfs, which are divided into two categories: old dwarfs in the field (>1 Gyr) and their young progenitors in the nearest star-forming regions and open clusters (1-100 Myr). Because the former are nearb…
I discuss how spectroscopy of extragalactic globular clusters provides a powerful probe of the formation history and mass distribution of galaxies. One critical area is spectroscopy of objects which have been identified as candidate young globular clusters through HST imaging of galaxy mergers. I discuss how such data can constrain models of globular cluster and galaxy formation. As an example, I present new spectra which confirm the presence of young globular clusters in NGC 1275. A second way wide-field spectroscopy can be used to probe the formation history and mass distribution of galaxies…
We report on four Chandra grating observations of the oblique magnetic rotator theta^1 Ori C (O5.5 V) covering a wide range of viewing angles with respect to the star's 1060 G dipole magnetic field. We employ line-width and centroid analyses to study the dynamics of the X-ray emitting plasma in the circumstellar environment, as well as line-ratio diagnostics to constrain the spatial location, and global spectral modeling to constrain the temperature distribution and abundances of the very hot plasma. We investigate these diagnostics as a function of viewing angle and analyze them in conjunctio…
We present JHK images of the young (~20 Myrs) nearby (~48 pc) stars HD 199143 and HD 358623 to search for (sub-)stellar companions around them. The images were obtained in JHK with the speckle camera SHARP-I in July 2001 and in H with SofI in Dec 2000, July 2001, and Dec 2001, all at the ESO 3.5m NTT. We present a companion candidate with a 2 arc sec offset being almost 2 mag fainter than HD 358623 with proper motion consistent with the known proper motion of the primary star HD 358623 A. Then, we obtained a spectrum in the H-band (with SofI at the NTT) of this companion showing that it has sp…
Aims. The properties of the early-type stars in the core of the Westerlund2 cluster are examined in order to establish a link between the cluster and the very massive Wolf-Rayet binary WR20a as well as the HII complex RCW49. Methods. Photometric monitoring as well as spectroscopic observations of Westerlund2 are used to search for light variability and to establish the spectral types of the early-type stars in the cluster core. Results. The first light curves of the eclipsing binary WR20a in B and V filters are analysed and a distance of 8kpc is inferred. Three additional eclipsing binaries, w…
It is now well established that many young brown dwarfs exhibit characteristics similar to classical T Tauri stars, including infrared excess from disks and emission lines related to accretion. Whether the same holds true for even lower mass objects, namely those near and below the Deuterium-burning limit, is an important question. Here we present optical spectra of six isolated planetary mass candidates in Chamaeleon II, Lupus I and Ophiuchus star-forming regions, recently identified by Allers and collaborators to harbor substantial mid-infrared excesses. Our spectra, from ESO's Very Large Te…
Using a large sample of optical spectra of late-type dwarfs, we identify a subset of late-M through L field dwarfs that, because of the presence of low-gravity features in their spectra, are believed to be unusually young. From a combined sample of 303 field L dwarfs, we find observationally that 7.6+/-1.6% are younger than 100 Myr. This percentage is in agreement with theoretical predictions once observing biases are taken into account. We find that these young L dwarfs tend to fall in the southern hemisphere (Dec < 0 deg) and may be previously unrecognized, low-mass members of nearby, young …
Near-infrared imaging surveys of high-mass star-forming regions reveal an amazingly complex interplay between star formation and the environment (Churchwell et al. 2006; Alvarez et al. 2004). By means of near-IR spectroscopy the embedded massive young stars can be characterized and placed in the context of their birth site. However, so far spectroscopic surveys have been hopelessly incomplete, hampering any systematic study of these very young massive stars. New integral field instrumentation available at ESO has opened the possibility to take a huge step forward by obtaining a full spectral i…
We present a spatially resolved spectroscopic analysis of the young Galactic supernova remnant Kes 75 (SNR G29.7-0.3) using the Chandra X-ray Observatory. Kes 75 is one of an increasing number of examples of a shell-type remnant with a central pulsar powering an extended radio/X-ray core. We are able to pinpoint the location of the recently discovered pulsar, PSR J1846-0258, and confirm that X-rays from the remnant's core component are consistent with non-thermal power-law emission from both the pulsar and its surrounding wind nebula. We find that the spectrum of the pulsar is significantly ha…
CH4 is proposed to be the starting point of a rich organic chemistry. Solid CH4 abundances have previously been determined mostly toward high mass star forming regions. Spitzer/IRS now provides a unique opportunity to probe solid CH4 toward low mass star forming regions as well. Infrared spectra from the Spitzer Space Telescope are presented to determine the solid CH4 abundance toward a large sample of low mass young stellar objects. 25 out of 52 ice sources in the $c2d$ (cores to disks) legacy have an absorption feature at 7.7 um, attributed to the bending mode of solid CH4. The solid CH4 / H…
We investigate the nature of Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) using a chemodynamical model for evolution of galaxies. Our models predict an early (the first Gyr) stage of intense star formation in the evolution of massive spheroids which could be identified to the LBGs, observed at redshift $\sim 3$ with strong ongoing star formation. In particular, we are successful in reproducing the properties of the LBG DSF 2237+116 C2 with a model describing a young $\sim L^*$ spheroid. The comparison of the predictions of our models with the observations gives support to the scenario in which LBGs are the pro…
