We have analyzed pair production in the innermost region of a two-temperature external soft photon comptonized accretion disk. We have shown that, if the viscosity parameter is greater than a temperature and r dependent critical value, the solution to the disk equation is double valued: one, advection dominated and the other, radiation dominated. When the viscosity parameter is below this critical value, the accretion rate has to be confined within a region limited by a minimum and a maximum accretion rates in order to have two steady state solutions. These critical accretion rates are shown to be dependent on r, on the temperature and on the viscosity parameter . Depending on the combination of the parameters, the advection dominated solution may not be physically consistent.
We present XMM-Newton observations of the bright quasar PKS0558-504. The 0.2-10 keV spectrum is dominated by a large, variable soft X-ray excess. The fastest flux variations imply accretion onto a Kerr black hole. The XMM-Newton data suggest the presence of a `big blue bump' in PKS0558-504 extending from the optical band to ~3 keV. The soft X-ray spectrum shows no evidence for significant absorption or emission-line features. The most likely explanation for the hot big blue bump is Comptonization by the multi-temperature corona of a thermal accretion disc running at a high accretion rate.
We investigate the effects of dynamical Comptonization on the emergent radiation spectrum produced by near critical accretion onto a neutron star. The flow dynamics and the transfer of radiation are self--consistently solved in the case of a spherically symmetric, ``cold'', pure scattering flow, including general relativity. A sequence of models, each characterized by the value of the total observed luminosity, was obtained assuming that the spectrum at the star surface is black body in shape. It is found that when the luminosity approaches the Eddington limit dynamical effects become importan…
We report on the BeppoSAX observation of the X-ray source X1724-308 in the globular cluster Terzan 2. The broadband spectrum can be described as the superposition of a power-law with photon spectral index 1.6-1.9 and a thermal component with typical temperature ~1 keV. X1724-308is detected in the PDS up to 150 keV with a S/N ratio >3, notwithstanding a sharp exponential cutoff at \~90 keV. The broadband spectrum can be best interpreted as due to the Comptonization of a Wien photon distribution with kT ~1 keV by a spherically-symmetric hot plasma with electron temperature ~30 keV and optical de…
Soft cyclo-synchrotron photons produced by thermal electrons moving in a magnetic field can be subsequently Comptonized to produce hard X-ray and $γ$-ray emission. An accurate determination of the amount of soft cyclo-synchrotron photons produced from such plasmas is clearly necessary. We present the complete solution to the cyclo-synchrotron problem. We calculate the emission produced by an isotropic distribution of thermal electrons moving in a magnetic field, for temperatures ranging from $5\times10^8$K to $3.2\times10^{10}$K. The applicability of the standard synchrotron formula is evaluat…
We model the broad-band spectral energy distribution of the innermost "core-jet" region of the redshift z=1.187 quasar PKS 1127-145. We propose a scenario where the high energy photons are produced via the Compton scattering of thermal IR radiation by the relativistic particles in a parsec-scale jet. The high energy spectrum, together with the observed radio variability and superluminal expansion, suggest that PKS 1127-145 may be a blazar, despite the fact that its optical/UV component is likely dominated by thermal radiation from an accretion disk. The relation of PKS 1127-145 to MeV - blazar…
Results are reported for analysis of the extensive Rosat observation of the dipping low mass X-ray binary XB 1916-053. Dipping is 100% deep showing that the emission regions are completely covered by the absorber. A good fit to the non-dip spectrum is obtained using a model consisting of a blackbody with kT_BB = 1.95 +0.74 -0.34 keV and a power law with photon index 2.32 +/- 0.04. These components are identified with emission from the neutron star, and Comptonized emission from an extended accretion disk corona (ADC). Dip spectra are well-fitted by rapid absorption of the blackbody, and progre…
The transient atoll source 4U 1608-52 had been extensively observed by the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer RXTE during its 1998 outburst. We analyse its X-ray spectra as a function of inferred accretion rate from both the 1998 outburst and from the non-outburst 1996 and 1998 data. We can fit all the spectra by a model in which seed photons from the neutron star surface are Comptonized in a boundary layer. The Comptonized emission illuminates the accretion disc surface, producing an ionized, relativistically broadened reflection signature, while the direct emission from the accretion disc can also …
\integral and \sax observations of the neutron-star LMXB 4U~1705--44 have been analysed to deeply investigate the spectral state transitions nature. Its energy spectrum can be described as the sum of one or two blackbody, a 6.4-keV Fe line and a component due to thermal Comptonization. For the first time in this source, we find a strong signature of Compton reflection, presumably due to illumination of the optically-thick accretion disk by the Comptonized spectrum. Detection of two blackbody component in the soft states could originate in the disk and the neutron-star surface, and the Comptoni…
We report on the results of a BeppoSAX (1.8--200 keV) observation of the peculiar X-ray binary source Circinus X--1 (Cir X--1) at the orbital phases between 0.61 and 0.63. We find that three components are needed to fit the broad band spectrum: a blackbody component, at a temperature of $\sim 0.6$ keV, a Comptonized component, with a seed-photon temperature of $\sim 1.2$ keV, electron temperature of $\sim 6$ keV and optical depth of $\sim 1.7$, and a power-law component dominating the spectrum at energies higher than 20 keV. We interpret the blackbody as the emission from the accretion disk, w…
We present a detailed model of an extreme slim disk (ESD) with a hot corona around a massive black hole with dimensionless accretion rate $\dotm$ in the range $2.5\ll \dotm\leq 100$. We assume that a fraction $f$ of the gravitational energy is released in the hot corona and the rest is released in the ESD. The energy equation of the ESD is dominated by advection and the spectrum shows a broad ``hump'' caused by saturated Comptonization with monochromatic luminosity given by $νL_ν\propto ν^0$. This relationship enables us to estimate the black hole mass from the ESD luminosity. The spectrum of …
We report on the results of a broad band (0.1-100 keV) spectral analysis of the bursting atoll source MXB 1728-34 observed by the BeppoSAX satellite. Three bursts were present during this observation. The spectrum during the bursts can be fitted by a blackbody with a temperature of 2 keV. From the bursts we also estimate a distance to the source of 5.1 kpc. MXB 1728-34 was in a rather soft state during the BeppoSAX observation. The persistent spectrum is well fitted by a continuum consisting of a soft blackbody emission and a comptonized spectrum. We interpreted the soft component as the emiss…
We present a systematic spectral analysis of six ultraluminous X-ray sources (NGC1313 X-1/X-2, IC342 X-1, HoIX X-1, NGC5408 X-1 and NGC3628 X-1) observed with XMM-Newton Observatory. These extra-nuclear X-ray sources in nearby late-type galaxies have been considered as intermediate-mass black hole candidates. We have performed Monte-Carlo simulations of Comptonized multi-color black-body accretion disks. This unified and self-consistent spectral model assumes a spherically symmetric, thermal corona around each disk and accounts for the radiation transfer in the Comptonization. We find that the…
Radiation emitted from an accretion disk around a massive black hole is a widely discussed model for the UV/soft X-ray excess emission observed in the spectra of many AGN. A self-consistent calculation of the structure and the emerging spectrum of geometrically thin alpha-accretion disks in AGN is presented. The central object is assumed to be a Kerr black hole; full relativistic corrections are included. The local dissipation of gravitational energy is assumed to be entirely due to turbulence. Since these disks are mainly supported by radiation pressure, the assumption that the viscous energy…
Low-luminosity AGNs (LLAGNs) are a very important class of sources since they occupy a significant fraction of local galaxies. Their spectra differ significantly from the canonical luminous AGNs, most notably by the absence of the ``big blue bump''. In the present paper, taking a typical LLAGN--NGC4258--as an example, we investigate the origin of their spectral emission. The observational data of NGC4258 is extremely abundant, including water maser emission, putting very strict constraints to its theoretical models. The infrared (IR) spectrum is well described by a steep power-law form $f_ν\pr…
We present the results of a 10 ks XMM-Newton observation of NGC 3998, a ``type-I'' LINER galaxy. Our goal is to test the extent to which radiatively-inefficient accretion flow (RIAF) models and/or scaled-down AGN models are consistent with the observed properties of NGC 3998. The upper-limit for narrow Fe-K emission derived from a combined fit of the XMM-Newton and BeppoSAX spectra is 25 eV, which is one of the strictest limits to date for any AGN. This significantly rules out Fe-K emission as is expected to be observed in typical Seyfert 1 galaxies. The lack of any reflection features suggest…
We present a model for the different X-ray spectral states displayed by Galactic Black Hole Candidates (GBHC). We discuss the physical and spectral implications for a magnetically structured corona in which magnetic flares result from reconnection of flux tubes rising from the accretion disk by the magnetic buoyancy instability. Using observations of one of the best studied examples, GX339-4, we identify the geometry and the physical conditions characterizing each of these states. We find that, in the Soft state, flaring occurs at small scale heights above the accretion disk. The soft thermal-…
We present results of a survey of the spectra of Low Mass X-ray Binaries using ASCA. It is shown that all sources in the survey are well-fitted by the same two-component emission model that we have previously shown is able to describe both the non-dip and dip spectra of the dipping class of LMXB. This model consists of point-like blackbody emission from the neutron star plus Comptonized emission from a disk-like accretion disk corona of radius typically 50,000 km. Additional data from results published elsewhere by us from BeppoSAX and ASCA are added to the survey. The large variation in black…
We describe a method for the determination of black-hole masses based on information inferred from high-energy spectra. It is required that the spectral energy distribution consist of thermal and Comptonized components. One can then, in principle, infer the depth of the gravitational potential well for sources of known distance. The thermal component is inferred by the integration of a blackbody spectral form over the disk. We assume that the color temperature distribution in the disk has a specific shape given by the Shakura-Sunyaev (1973) disk model which goes to zero at the inner disk radiu…
We have analyzed Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer spectral data of the Galactic micro-quasar GRS 1915+105 in its various spectral states, as defined by Belloni et al. (2000). In states A and B the spectra are dominated by a strong soft thermal component, accompanied by a weak harder tail. The soft component is rather complex and cannot be described as a simple accretion disk emission. Relativistic effects in Kerr metric contribute to the complexity of the soft component but are not sufficient to fully account for it. As found previously, state C spectra are dominated by a Comptonized component, wit…
PAPER WITHDRAWN. The recent detection of Sgr A* in the X-ray band, together with the radio polarization measurements conducted over the past few years, offer the best constraints yet for understanding the nature of the emitting gas within several Schwarzschild radii ($r_S$) of this supermassive black hole candidate at the Galactic Center. Earlier, we showed that the sub-mm radiation from this source may be associated with thermal synchrotron emission from an inner Keplerian region within the circularization radius of the accreting plasma. In this paper, we extend this analysis in a very import…
We report on the results of spectral analysis of the dipping source XB 1254-690 observed by the BeppoSAX satellite. We find that the X-ray dips are not present during the BeppoSAX observation, in line with recent RXTE results. The broad band (0.1-100 keV) energy spectrum is well fitted by a three-component model consisting of a multicolor disk blackbody with an inner disk temperature of ~0.85 keV, a comptonized spectrum with an electron temperature of ~2 keV, and a bremsstrahlung at a temperature of ~20 keV. Adopting a distance of 10 kpc and taking into account a spectral hardening factor of ~…
We extend our models of the vertical structure and emergent radiation field of accretion disks around supermassive black holes described in previous papers of this series. Our models now include both a self-consistent treatment of Compton scattering and the effects of continuum opacities of the most important metal species (C, N, O, Ne, Mg, Si, S, Ar, Ca, Fe, Ni). With these new effects incorporated, we compute the predicted spectrum from black holes accreting at nearly the Eddington luminosity (L/L_Edd = 0.3) and central masses of 10^6, 10^7, and 10^8 M_sun. We also consider two values of the…
The Galactic superluminal source GRS 1915+105 was found to experience a peculiar X-ray variability in a narrow count rate range of the PCA detector onboard RXTE. This can be seen as a ring-shaped pattern in the two-color diagram of count rates, where the hard hardness F(13-40keV)/F(2-13keV) is plotted against the soft hardness F(5-13keV)/F(2-5keV). The system runs one cycle with periods ranging between 50 - 100 s for different observations, one rotation in the 2-color diagram corresponding to the time between two contiguous maxima in the light curve. We model this behaviour successfully with t…
We present absolutely calibrated FUV spectra of the quasar 3C~273 covering 900- 1800 A. Our ~3 A resolution spectra were obtained with the Hopkins Ultraviolet Telescope during the Astro-1 mission in December 1990 and during the Astro-2 mission in March 1995. Both spectra exhibit a change in slope near the Lyman limit in the quasar rest frame. At longer UV wavelengths, the continuum has a power-law index of 0.5-0.7, while shortward of the Lyman limit it is 1.2-1.7. The energy distribution in nuf_nu therefore peaks close to the quasar Lyman limit. The short wavelength UV power law extrapolates w…
We report results from simultaneous ASCA and RXTE observations of Cyg X-1 when the source made a rare transition from the hard (= low) state to the soft (= high) state in 1996. These observations together cover a broad energy range ~0.7--50 keV with a moderate energy resolution at the iron K-band, thus make it possible to disentangle various spectral components. The low-energy spectrum is dominated by an ultra-soft component, which is likely to be the emission from the hottest inner portion of the accretion disk around the black hole. At high energies, the X-ray spectrum can be described by a …
We report on the results of a broad band (0.1-200 keV) spectral study of Cyg X-2 using two BeppoSAX observations taken in 1996 and 1997, respectively, for a total effective on-source time of ~100 ks. The color-color (CD) and hardness-intensity (HID) diagrams show that the source was in the horizontal branch (HB) and normal branch (NB) during the 1996 and 1997 observation, respectively. Five spectra were selected around different positions of the source in the CD/HID, two in the HB and three in the NB. These spectra are fit to a model consisting of a disk blackbody, a Comptonization component, …
