We present a combined optical and X-ray analysis of three optically selected X-ray bright groups with giant elliptical galaxies in the center. These massive ellipticals were targeted for XMM-Newton X-ray observations based on their large velocity dispersions and their proximity to a nearby ROSAT X-ray source. Additionally, these targets are significantly brighter in the optical than their nearest neighbors. We show that one of these systems meets the standard criteria for a fossil group. While the other two systems have a prominent magnitude gap in the E/S0 ridgeline, they do not appear to have reached the fossil-like final stage of group evolution.
I review the current status of understanding when, how long, and how giant elliptical galaxies formed, focusing on the globular clusters. Several observational evidences show that massive elliptical galaxies formed at $z>2$ ($>10$ Gyr ago). Giant elliptical galaxies show mostly a bimodal color distribution of globular clusters, indicating a factor of $\approx 20$ metallicity difference between the two peaks. The red globular clusters (RGCs) are closely related with the stellar halo in color and spatial distribution, while the blue globular clusters (BGCs) are not. The ratio of the number of th…
We present a discovery of a giant stellar halo in NGC 6822, a dwarf irregular galaxy in the Local Group. This halo is mostly made of old red giants, showing striking features: 1) it is several times larger than the main body of the galaxy seen in the optical images, and 2) it is elongated in the direction almost perpendicular to the HI disk of NGC 6822. The structure of this stellar halo looks similar to the shape of dwarf elliptical galaxies, indicating that the halos of dwarf irregular galaxies share the same origin with those of the dwarf elliptical galaxies.
The Hubble Space Telescope has been used to obtain WFPC2 (V,I) photometry for a large sample of stars in the outer halo of the giant elliptical NGC 5128 (d = 4 Mpc). The globular cluster N5128-C44, at the center of the Planetary Camera field, is well enough resolved to permit the construction of a color-magnitude diagram (CMD) for it which covers the brightest two magnitudes of the giant branch. The CMD is consistent with that of a normal old, moderately low-metallicity ([Fe/H] = -1.30 globular cluster, distinctly more metal-poor than most of the field halo stars at the same projected location…
Newly obtained HST/WFPC2 images of the disturbed elliptical galaxy NGC 5018 show that the average amount of internal reddening due to the its complex ``dust web'' is as low as E(B-V)~0.02 within the IUE aperture, thus implying that its observed and intrinsic energy distributions do not differ significantly down to UV wavelengths. This, in turn, is quite relevant to the current debate on the age of its dominant stellar population.
I review the current understanding of the origin and nature of ``warm'' ionized gas in giant elliptical galaxies in the light of results of recent imaging and spectroscopic surveys. CCD imaging surveys have revealed that emission-line disks or filaments are (as a rule) associated with dust absorption, even in the X-ray brightest systems. This strongly suggests that the origin of this ionized gas is generally not through ``cooling flows''; galaxy interactions are favored instead. Using data from a new spectrophotometric survey of ``normal'' elliptical galaxies covering the whole optical range, …
The highly disturbed hot gas in elliptical galaxies, as revealed in many {\em Chandra} X-ray images, implies a source of energy in the galactic nucleus. In some elliptical galaxies faint X-ray ``ghost'' cavities appear without corresponding radio lobes. It has been suggested that ghost cavities are caused by short-lived activity with a timescale of $\sim 10^3-10^4$ years, but this is difficult to understand within the popular paradigm of active galactic nuclei. We suggest an episode model for ghost cavities, invoking captures of red giant stars by the black hole located at the center of the el…
A popular formation scenario for giant elliptical galaxies proposes that they might have formed from binary mergers of disk galaxies. Difficulties with the scenario that emerged from earlier studies included providing the necessary stellar mass and metallicity, maintaining the tight color-magnitude relation and avoiding phase space limits. In this paper we revisit the issue and put constraints on the binary disc merger scenario based on the stellar populations of disc galaxies. We draw the following conclusions: Low redshift collisionless or gaseous mergers of present day Milky Way like disc g…
Elliptical galaxy nuclei are the sites of the largest black holes known, but typically show little or no nuclear activity. We investigate this extreme quiescence using Chandra X-ray Observatory observations of the giant elliptical galaxies NGC 1399, NGC 4472, and NGC 4636. The unique Chandra imaging power enables us to place upper limits of 7.3, 15 and 28 X 10^-9 the Eddington luminosity for the 0.1-1 billion solar mass black holes in NGC 1399, NGC 4472, and NGC 4636, respectively. The corresponding radiative efficiencies in this band are 4.1, 24, and 620 X 10^-6 using Bondi accretion rates de…
It has been suggested that the final stages of accretion in present--day giant elliptical galaxies occur in an advection-dominated mode. The poor radiative efficiency of this accretion solution accounts for the fact that massive black holes, which are believed to reside in the centres of these galaxies, do not have the luminosities expected if accretion from the hot interstellar medium occurs at the Bondi rate. We discuss the advection-dominated solution for the nucleus of M60 (NGC 4649) and show that accretion at the Bondi rate is consistent with the core flux from radio to X-ray. This soluti…
The properties of dust in giant elliptical galaxies are reviewed, with particular emphasis on the influence of the environment. After normalizing by the optical luminosities, a strong anti-correlation between the masses of dust and hot gas in X-ray bright ellipticals is found. Furthermore, large-scale, regularly-shaped dust lanes (which are symmetric with respect to the galaxy nucleus) are only found to be present in ellipticals with the lowest ratios of the mass of hot gas to the blue luminosity M_hot/L_B < 0.04 in solar units. This can be explained by the short time scale for the destruction…
We report observations at mid-infrared and sub-millimeter wavelengths of Centaurus A (CenA, NGC 5128), the giant elliptical galaxy that harbors the closest radio loud Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN) to Earth. The dust emission from the deep interior of CenA reveals a bisymmetric structure with a diameter of 5' (5 kpc), centred at the AGN. This structure is remarkably similar to that of a barred spiral galaxy, with the bar lying in a plane that is tilted ~18 degrees from the line of sight. The true nature of the distribution of dust in the inner regions of CenA is noticeably displaced from the mo…
The structural properties of a sample of 50 dEs in the Virgo cluster are here derived from Near InfraRed (NIR, H-band 1.65 micron) surface photometry and analysed. One-dimensional surface brightness (SB) profiles are extracted using elliptical isophote fitting. They are characterised by means of structural parameters, namely the half light radius R_e, the average surface brightness within R_e (mu_e), and a concentration index (c_31). We show that typical dEs have close-to-exponential NIR SB distributions. The relations between dEs and giant ellipticals (Es) are investigated by comparing the NI…
NGC 4649 (M60) is one of a handful of giant Virgo ellipticals. We have obtained Gemini/GMOS spectra for 38 GCs associated with this galaxy. Applying the multi-index chi^2 minimisation technique of Proctor & Sansom (2002) with the single stellar population models of Thomas, Maraston & Korn (2004) we derive ages, metallicities and alpha-element abundance ratios. We find several young (2--3 Gyr old) super-solar metallicity GCs, while the majority are old (>10 Gyrs), spanning a range of metallicities from solar to [Z/H]=-2. At least two of these young GCs are at large projected radii of 17-20 kpc.…
We examine the cosmic ray proton (CRp) population within the giant elliptical galaxy M 87 using the TeV gamma-ray detection of the HEGRA collaboration. In our scenario, the gamma-rays are produced by decaying pions which result from hadronic CRp interactions with thermal gas of the interstellar medium of M 87. By comparing the gamma-ray emission to upper limits of EGRET, we constrain the spectral index of the CRp population to alpha(GeV,TeV) < 2.275 within our scenario. Both the expected radial gamma-ray profile and the required amount of CRp support this hadronic scenario. The accompanying ra…
We present kinematics and stellar population properties of 17 dwarf early-type galaxies in the luminosity range -14> M_B> -19. Our sample fills the gap between the intensively studied giant elliptical and Local Group dwarf spheroidal galaxies. The dwarf ellipticals of the present sample have constant velocity dispersion profiles within their effective radii and do not show significant rotation, hence are clearly anisotropic. The dwarf lenticulars, instead, rotate faster and are, at least partially, supported by rotation. From optical Lick absorption indices, we derive metallicities and element…
We have used the adaptive optics system on the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope to study a field 6 arcmin from the center of the heavily obscured elliptical galaxy Maffei 1. Our near diffraction-limited H and K' images reveal an excess population of objects with respect to a background field, and we conclude that the asymptotic giant branch tip (AGB-tip) in Maffei 1 occurs at K = 20 +/- 0.25. Assuming that stars at the AGB-tip in Maffei 1 have the same intrinsic luminosity as those in the bulge of M31, then the actual distance modulus of Maffei 1 is 28.2 +/- 0.3 if A_V = 5.1, which corresponds t…
We present a deep VLT photometry in the regions surrounding the two dominant galaxies of the Antlia cluster, the giant ellipticals NGC 3258 and NGC 3268. We construct the luminosity functions of their globular cluster systems (GCSs) and determine their distances through the turn-over magnitudes. These distances are in good agreement with those obtained by the SBF method. There is some, but not conclusive, evidence that the distance to NGC 3268 is larger by several Mpc. The GCSs colour distributions are bimodal but the brightest globular clusters (GCs) show a unimodal distribution with an inter…
Here we examine the relationship between the virial and stellar mass for a range of old stellar systems, from GCs to giant ellipticals, and including such Intermediate Mass Objects (IMOs). Improvements on previous work in this area include the use of (i) near-infrared magnitudes from the 2MASS survey, (ii) aperture corrections to velocity dispersions, (iii) homogeneous half light radii and (iv) accounting for the effects of non-homology in galaxies. We find a virial-to-stellar mass relation that ranges from ~10$^4$ M_o systems (GCs) to ~10$^11$ M_o systems (elliptical galaxies). The lack of me…
We report on the radial velocity measurements of 18 globular clusters and one dE galaxy in the field of the giant elliptical galaxy NGC 1399, the dominant galaxy of the Fornax cluster. We present also the radial velocity measurements of some candidates for young and super metal-rich globular clusters, which turn out to be foreground or background objects, viz. 28 stars and 7 galaxies. The bonafide globular clusters are selected, on the basis of their magnitudes and colors, to be metal-rich. For this cluster sample we measure a mean radial velocity of v_{rad} = 1353 +/- 79 km/s, and a velocity …
We analyze photometric data in V and I for the globular cluster (GC) systems in five of the giant ellipticals in the Coma Cluster: NGC 4874, 4881, 4889, 4926, and IC 4051. We find that the GC luminosity functions are quite similar to one another, with a turnover derived from a composite sample of more than 9,000 GCs at V = 27.71 +- 0.07 (M_V = -7.3). Both a simple Gaussian curve and an evolved Schechter function fit the bright half of the GCLF equally well, though the Coma GCLF is broader and has a higher ``cutoff mass'' (M_c ~ 3 x 10^6 M_Sun) than in any of the Virgo giants. These five Coma m…
Recently it has been suggested that the hard x-ray power-law tails exhibited in the ASCA spectra of several nearby giant elliptical galaxies are caused by low-radiative efficiency accretion flows (ADAFs) onto a massive black hole in the centers of the galaxies. The estimated fluxes from these central ADAFs as derived from the ASCA x-ray spectral analyses indicate that they may be visible as x-ray point sources. We analyze archival ROSAT HRI images of three such galaxies, NGCs 1399, 4636, and 4696, to determine whether point x-ray sources consistent with ASCA-derived fluxes are present in the c…
We revisit the problem of the flat slope of the Mg2 versus <Fe> relationship found for nuclei of elliptical galaxies (Faber et al. 1992; Worthey et al. 1992; Carollo et al. 1993; Davies et al. 1993), indicating that the Mg/Fe ratio should increase with galactic luminosity and mass. We transform the abundance of Fe, as predicted by classic wind models and alternative models for the chemical evolution of elliptical galaxies, into the metallicity indices Mg2 and <Fe>, by means of the more recent index calibrations and show that none of the current models for the chemical evolution of elliptical g…
This paper summarizes Kormendy et al. (2009, ApJS, in press, arXiv:0810.1681). We confirm that spheroidal galaxies have fundamental plane correlations that are almost perpendicular to those for bulges and ellipticals. Spheroidals are not dwarf ellipticals. They are structurally similar to late-type galaxies. We suggest that they are defunct ("red and dead") late-type galaxies transformed by a variety of gas removal processes. Minus spheroidals, ellipticals come in two varieties: giant, non-rotating, boxy galaxies with cuspy cores and smaller, rotating, disky galaxies that lack cores. We find a…
The bimodal globular cluster (GC) metallicity distributions of many giant elliptical galaxies are often cited as evidence for the formation of such galaxies through mergers involving gas-rich spirals. In such models, the metal- rich GCs are assumed to have formed during the merger process. We explore an alternative possibility: that these metal-rich clusters represent the galaxy's intrinsic GC population and that the metal-poor component of the observed GC metallicity distribution arises from the capture of GCs from other galaxies, either through mergers or through tidal stripping. Starting wi…
The luminosities of the centers of nearby elliptical galaxies are very low compared to models of thin disc accretion to their black holes at the Bondi rate, typically a few hundredths to a few tenths of a solar mass per year. This has motivated models of inefficiently-radiated accretion that invoke weak electron-ion thermal coupling, and/or inhibited accretion rates due to convection or outflows. Here we point out that even if such processes are operating, a significant fraction of the accreting gas is prevented from reaching the central black hole because it condenses into stars in a gravitat…
The near orthogonal distributions of dwarf elliptical (dE) and giant elliptical (E) galaxies in the mu_e-Mag and mu_e-log(R_e) diagrams have been interpreted as evidence for two distinct galaxy formation processes. However, continuous, linear relationships across the alleged dE/E boundary at M_B = -18 mag - such as those between central surface brightness (mu_0) and (i) galaxy magnitude and (ii) light-profile shape (n) - suggest a similar, governing formation mechanism. Here we explain how these latter two linear trends necessitate a different behavior for dE and E galaxies, exactly as observe…
NGC5018, one of the weakest UV emitters among giant ellipticals (gE) observed with IUE, appears to consist of an optical stellar population very similar to that of the compact, dwarf elliptical M32, which is several magnitudes fainter in luminosity than NGC5018 and whose stellar population is know to be ~3 Gyr old. Here we show that the mid-UV spectra of these two galaxies are also very similar down to an angular scale hundreds times smaller than the IUE large aperture (as probed by HST/FOS UV spectra obtained through 0.86 arcsec apertures). This implies a reasonably close match of the populat…
We present deep wide field (16'.4 x 16'.4) Washington CT1 CCD surface photometry of the giant elliptical galaxy NGC 4472, the brightest member in the Virgo cluster. Our data cover a wider field than any previous CCD photometry as well as going deeper. Surface brightness profiles of NGC 4472 are not well fit by a single King model, but they can be fit approximately by two King models: with separate models for the inner and outer regions. Surface brightness profiles for the outer region can also be fit approximately by a deVaucouleurs law. There is clearly a negative color gradient within 3' of …
Based on a uniform dynamical analysis of line-profile shapes for 21 luminous round elliptical galaxies, we have investigated the dynamical family relations of ellipticals: (i) The circular velocity curves (CVCs) of elliptical galaxies are flat to within ~10% for R>~0.2R_e. (ii) Most ellipticals are moderately radially anisotropic; their dynamical structure is surprisingly uniform. (iii) Elliptical galaxies follow a Tully-Fisher (TF) relation, with v_c^max=300 km/s for an L_B^* galaxy. At given v_c^max, they are ~1 mag fainter in B and appear to have slightly lower baryonic mass than spirals ev…
High redshift radio galaxies (z>2) are believed to be progenitors of the giant ellipticals of today. They are often associated with giant Ly-alpha nebulae (sometimes >100 kpc), which have been for more than two decades valuable sources of information about the evolutionary status of the host galaxy and its chemical enrichment and star formation histories. I present in this paper a summary of the most relevant results about the giant nebulae obtained in the last ~10 years and the implications on our understanding of the early phases of evolution of massive elliptical galaxies.
We review the origin and structure of hot (cooling flow) gas in elliptical galaxies. X-ray observations can be used to determine the stellar mass to light ratio, the mass profiles of dark matter halos, and the interstellar magnetic field. Interstellar gas cools over a large volume, forming stars with a bottom-heavy IMF. For consistency with the thin fundamental plane, young stars must be optically luminous. Circular X-ray isophotes in rotating elliptical galaxies indicate distributed radiative cooling or strong interstellar turbulence.
We present integrated Washington CT1 photometry of 18 bright blue objects discovered in the dwarf galaxy UGC 7636 which is located 5'.5 southeast of the giant elliptical galaxy NGC 4472, the brightest galaxy in the Virgo cluster. Several lines of evidence indicate that UGC 7636 is interacting violently with NGC 4472. These objects are very blue with colors of -0.4 < (C-T1) < 0.6, and their magnitudes are in the range of 20.6 < T1 < 22.9 mag which corresponds to absolute magnitudes of -10.6 < M(T1) < -8.3 mag for a distance modulus of (m-M)o = 31.2. These objects are grouped spatially in three …
The turnover, or peak, magnitude in a galaxy's globular cluster luminosity function (GCLF) may provide a standard candle for an independent distance estimator. Here we examine the GCLF of the giant elliptical NGC 4365 using photometry of ~ 350 globular clusters from the HST's WFPC2. The WFPC2 data have several advantages over equivalent ground--based imaging. The membership of NGC 4365 in the Virgo cluster has been the subject of recent debate. We have fit a Gaussian and t_5 profile to the GCLF and find that it can be well represented by a turnover magnitude of m_V^0 = 24.2 +/- 0.3 and a dispe…
We perform a large parameter survey of 112 collisionless N-body simulations of binary mergers of disk-galaxies with mass ratios of 1:1, 2:1, 3:1, and 4:1 using the special purpose hardware GRAPE. The basic properties of the remnants correlate with the mass ratio of the progenitor disks. We find that about 80% of the equal-mass merger simulations lead to slowly rotating remnants with significant minor-axis rotation. One half of all projected 1:1 remnants shows boxy and the other half shows disky isophotes. Remnants with mass ratios of 3:1 and 4:1 all rotate fast and show a small amount of minor…
(Abridged version) Mayall II = G1 is one of the brightest globular clusters belonging to M31, the Andromeda galaxy. Our observations with HST/WFPC2 provide data for the (I vs. V-I) and (V vs. V-I) color-magnitude diagrams. From model fitting, we determine a rather high mean metallicity of [Fe/H] = --0.95 +- 0.09, somewhat similar to 47 Tucanae. We find a larger spread in V-I than can be explained by the measurement errors, and we attribute this to an intrinsic metallicity dispersion amongst the stars of G1. So far, only omega Centauri, the giant Galactic globular cluster, has been known to exh…
In this paper, we show that the optically bright stars above the tip of the first red giant branch (TRGB) in the color magnitude (CM) diagrams of nearby dwarf elliptical (dE) galaxies, commonly interpreted as indication of the existence of an intermediate-age population, may, in certain circumstances, be an artifact of observational effects on a pure old population system. For this purpose, model CM diagrams have been computed simulating the observational effects that can be found in different regions of a Local Group dE galaxy. The starting synthetic CM diagram represents a pure old system, w…
We present the GALEX UV photometry of the elliptical galaxies in Abell clusters at moderate redshifts (z < 0.2) for the study of the look-back time evolution of the UV upturn phenomenon. The brightest elliptical galaxies (M_r < -22) in 12 remote clusters are compared with the nearby giant elliptical galaxies of comparable optical luminosity in the Fornax and Virgo clusters. The sample galaxies presented here appear to be quiescent without signs of massive star formation or strong nuclear activity, and show smooth, extended profiles in their UV images indicating that the far-UV (FUV) light is m…
Giant radio galaxies are thought to be massive ellipticals powered by accretion of interstellar matter onto a supermassive black hole. Interactions with gas rich galaxies may provide the interstellar matter to feed the active galactic nucleus (AGN). To power radio lobes that extend up to distances of hundreds of kiloparsecs, gas has to be funneled from kiloparsec size scales down to the AGN at rates of ~1 Mo yr^-1 during >10^8 years. Therefore, large and massive quasi-stable structures of gas and dust should exist in the deep interior of the giant elliptical hosts of double lobe radio galaxies…
The distance to NGC 5128, the central galaxy of the Centaurus group and the nearest giant elliptical to us, has been determined using two independent distance indicators: the Mira period-luminosity (PL) relation and the luminosity of the tip of the red giant branch (RGB). The data were taken at two different locations in the halo of NGC 5128 with the ISAAC near-IR array on ESO VLT. From more than 20 hours of observations with ISAAC a very deep Ks-band luminosity function was constructed. The tip of the RGB is detected at Ks=21.24 \pm 0.05 mag. Using an empirical calibration of the K-band RGB t…
We present direct observational constraints on the orbital distribution of the stars in the giant elliptical NGC 2320. Long-slit spectra along multiple position angles are used to derive the stellar line-of-sight velocity distribution within one effective radius. In addition, the rotation curve and dispersion profile of an ionized gas disk are measured from the [OIII] emission lines. After correcting for the asymmetric drift, we derive the circular velocity of the gas, which provides an independent constraint on the gravitational potential. To interpret the stellar motions, we build axisymmetr…
We report the discovery of large-amplitude X-ray variability from the direction of the previously unknown, optically inactive galaxy pair RXJ1242.6-1119. The X-ray source shows variability by a factor > 20 between the ROSAT all-sky survey and a later pointed observation separated by ~1.5 yr. Its spectrum is extremely soft with photon index Gamma_x ~ -5, among the steepest ever observed among galaxies. Based on the redshift derived from the optical spectra, z=0.05, the source's intrinsic luminosity is large, L_x > 9x10^{43} erg/s. Surprisingly, the optical spectra of both galaxies are character…
Deep near-infrared images obtained with adaptive optics systems on the Gemini North and Canada-France-Hawaii telescopes are used to investigate the bright stellar content and central regions of the nearby elliptical galaxy Maffei 1. Stars evolving on the upper asymptotic giant branch (AGB) are resolved in a field 3 arcmin from the center of the galaxy. The locus of bright giants on the (K, H-K) color-magnitude diagram is consistent with a population of stars like those in Baade's Window reddened by E(H-K) = 0.28 +/- 0.05 mag. This corresponds to A_V = 4.5 +/- 0.8 mag, and is consistent with pr…
The specific globular cluster frequencies (S_N) for 24 dwarf elliptical (dE) galaxies in the Virgo and Fornax Clusters and the Leo Group imaged with the Hubble Space Telescope are presented. Combining all available data, we find that for nucleated dEs --- which are spatially distributed like giant ellipticals in galaxy clusters --- S_N(dE,N)=6.5 +- 1.2 and S_N increases with M_V, while for non-nucleated dEs --- which are distributed like late-type galaxies --- S_N(dE,noN)=3.1 +- 0.5 and there is little or no trend with M_V. The S_N values for dE galaxies are thus on average significantly highe…
Galaxies can be classified in two broad sequences which are likely to reflect their formation mechanism. The `main sequence', consisting of spirals, irregulars and all dwarf galaxies, is probably produced by gas settling within dark matter haloes. We show that the sizes and surface densities along this sequence are primarily determined by the distributions of the angular momentum and formation time of dark haloes. They are well reproduced by current cosmogonies provided that galaxies form late, at $z \la 2$. In this scenario, dwarf ellipticals were small `disks' at $z\sim 1$ and become `ellipt…
We present deep near-IR images of high redshift radio galaxies obtained with NIRC on the Keck I telescope. In most cases, the near-IR data sample rest wavelengths at ~4000 Angstroms, free of strong emission lines. At z > 3, the rest frame optical morphologies generally have faint, large-scale emission surrounding multiple components of ~10 kpc size. The brightest of the small knots are often aligned with the radio structures. At z < 3, the morphologies change dramatically, showing single, compact structures without radio-aligned features. The sizes and luminosities of the individual components…
Using the Near Infrared Camera and Multi-Object Spectrometer (NICMOS) on board the Hubble Space Telescope, we have obtained F110W (J-band) and F160W (H-band) images of three fields in NGC3379, a nearby normal giant elliptical galaxy. These images resolve individual red giant stars, yielding the first accurate color-magnitude diagrams for a normal luminous elliptical. The photometry reaches 1 magnitude below the red giant branch tip with errors of < 0.2 mags in F110W-F160W. A strong break in the luminosity function at F160W = 23.68 +/- 0.06 is identified as the tip of the red giant branch (RGB)…
The UV upturn phenomenon observed in elliptical galaxies is attractive for its potential value as an age indicator of old stellar systems. We present our most recent population models for the UV evolution of elliptical galaxies. We confirm that the dominant UV sources are either metal-poor or metal-rich hot horizontal-branch (HB) stars in local giant ellipticals, but we also note that the contribution from post-asymptotic-giant-branch (PAGB) stars overwhelms the UV spectrum at higher redshifts (look-back times). The model UV spectral energy distribution (SED) is therefore strongly affected by …
The Virgo and Fornax clusters of galaxies play central roles in determining the Hubble constant H_0. A powerful and direct way of establishing distances for elliptical galaxies is to use the luminosities of the brightest red-giant stars (the TRGB luminosity, at M_I = -4.2). Here we report the direct observation of the TRGB stars in a dwarf elliptical galaxy in the Virgo cluster. We find its distance to be 15.7 +- 1.5 Megaparsecs, from which we estimate a Hubble constant of H_0 = 77 +- 8 km/s/Mpc. Under the assumption of a low-density Universe with the simplest cosmology, the age of the Univers…
We investigate the kinematics of a combined sample of 74 globular clusters around NGC 1399. Their high velocity dispersion, increasing with radius, supports their association with the gravitational potential of the galaxy cluster rather than with that of NGC 1399 itself. We find no evidence for rotation in the full sample, although some indication for rotation in the outer regions. The data do not allow us to detect differences between the kinematics of the blue and red sub-populations of globular clusters. A comparison between the globular cluster systems of NGC 1399 and those of NGC 1404 and…
We analyze the upper-end X-ray luminosity function (XLF) observed in elliptical galaxies for point sources. We propose that the observed XLF is dominated by transient BH systems in outburst and the XLF shape reflects the black hole (BH) mass spectrum among old X-ray transients. The BH mass spectrum -- XLF connection depends on a weighting factor that is related to the transient duty cycle and depends on the host-galaxy age, the BH mass and the donor type (main sequence, red giant, or white dwarf). We argue that the assumption of a constant duty cycle for all systems leads to results inconsiste…
Recent observations of globular clusters in intermediate-age (2-4 Gyr old) merger remnants have provided the hitherto `missing link' between between young merger remnants and normal elliptical galaxies. The luminosity functions (LFs) of the `blue' globular clusters exhibit a Gaussian shape centered on M_V ~ -7.2 as found for giant ellipticals, while the `red' clusters exhibit LFs that are more extended towards both the bright and faint ends, as expected for a cluster population of intermediate age. Specific frequencies for these systems have been calculated by evolving both the LF of the `red'…
We consider microlensing of an elliptical source crossing a fold caustic. We derive a simple expression for the light curve of a source with uniform surface brightness that is accurate to third order in the ellipticity e (yielding errors of <1% for e<0.3). We consider caustic crossings of a rotating star, an oblate giant extrasolar planet, and an inclined standard thin accretion disk, and find the following results. (1) If most stars have rotation periods similar to chromospherically-active (i.e. spotted) giant stars in the bulge, than ~15% should be sufficiently oblate (e>0.25) to produce det…
We have performed a spectroscopic study of globular clusters (GCs) in the giant elliptical NGC 5128 using the 2dF facility at the Anglo-Australian telescope. We obtained integrated optical spectra for a total of 254 GCs, 79 of which are newly confirmed on the basis of their radial velocities and spectra. In addition, we obtained an integrated spectrum of the galaxy starlight along the southern major axis. We derive an empirical metallicity distribution function (MDF) for 207 GCs (~14 of the estimated total GC system) based upon Milky Way GCs. This MDF is multimodal at high statistical signific…
Recent developments relevant to the formation of globular cluster systems in galaxies are discussed, including (1) The age distribution of the oldest Milky Way clusters, (2) Subgroups and possible accretion and merger remnants in the Galactic halo, (3) Key features of globular cluster systems in giant elliptical galaxies (metallicity distribution functions, luminosity distribution functions, specific frequencies). Processes contributing to the formation of giant ellipticals are summarized.
We have used the ACS camera on HST to obtain (V,I) photometry for 5300 red-giant stars in the halo of the dominant Leo-group member NGC 3379, a galaxy usually regarded as a classic normal giant elliptical. We use this sample of stars to derive the metallicity distribution function (MDF) for its outer-halo field stars 33 kpc from the galaxy center. The MDF is distinctly unlike all the other E galaxies for which we have similar data (including the Local Group dwarf ellipticals, the intermediate-luminosity NGC 3377, and the giant NGC 5128). First, the MDF for the NGC 3379 outer halo is broad and …
We study the dominant central giant elliptical galaxies in ``Fossil groups'' using deep optical (R-band) and near infrared (Ks-band) photometry. These galaxies are as luminous as the brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs), raising immediate interest in their link to the formation of BCGs and galaxy clusters. However, despite apparent similarities, the dominant fossil galaxies show non-boxy isophotes, in contrast to the most luminous BCGs. This study suggests that the structure of the brightest group galaxies produced in fossil groups are systematically different to the majority of BCGs. If the foss…
We present the results of an exhaustive analysis of the morphological segregation of galaxies in the CfA and SSRS catalogs through the scaling formalism. Morphological segregation between ellipticals and spirals has been detected at scales up to 15-20 h$^{-1}$ Mpc in the CfA catalog, and up to 20-30 h$^{-1}$ Mpc in the SSRS catalog. Moreover, it is present not only in the densest areas of the galaxy distribution, but also in zones of moderate density.
We show that the UV flux of old stellar systems can tell us about their ages. Two independent populations synthesis groups that have had wildly different views have here worked together and generated two solutions that can be easily tested using space telescopes. Proposed tests will constrain the ages of giant Es, that are often considered the oldest populations in the universe, and thus cosmology.
We present a photometric study of the globular clusters in the giant elliptical galaxy M60 in the Virgo cluster, based on deep, relatively wide field Washington CT_1 CCD images. The color-magnitude diagram reveals a significant population of globular clusters in M60, and a large number of young luminous clusters in NGC 4647, a small companion spiral galaxy north-west of M60. The color distribution of the globular clusters in M60 is clearly bimodal, with a blue peak at (C-T_1)=1.37, and a red peak at (C-T_1)=1.87. We derive two new transformation relations between the (C-T_1)_0 color and [Fe/H]…
[annotated] HST WFPC2 images were taken of three LSB dwarf elliptical galaxies in the Virgo cluster. The intent of the observations was to determine the small scale structure in these enigmatic galaxies, and to attempt to learn something about the nature of their giant branch through the detection of luminosity fluctuations. In two of the three studied galaxies, V7L3 and V1L4, the luminosity fluctuations were unambiguously detected, yielding a density of 2 - 10 red giants/pixel. Using the observed B-V and V-I colors as a constraint, we could find no model that would reproduce the observed fluc…
