A quantitative spectral analysis of 24 A supergiants in the Sculptor Group spiral galaxy NGC 300 at a distance of 1.9 Mpc is presented. A new method is introduced to analyze low resolution (~5 AE) spectra, which yields metallicities accurate to 0.2 dex including the uncertainties arising from the errors in Teff (5%) and log g (0.2 dex). For the first time the stellar metallicity gradient based on elements such as titanium and iron in a galaxy beyond the Local Group is investigated. Solar metallicity is measured in the center and 0.3 solar in the outskirts and a logarithmic gradient of -0.08 dex/kpc. An average reddening of E(B-V)~0.12 mag is obtained, however with a large variation from 0.07 to 0.24 mag. We also determine stellar radii, luminosities and masses and discuss the evolutionary status. Finally, the observed relationship between absolute bolometric magnitudes M_{bol} and flux weighted gravities g_{F} = g/Teff^4 is investigated. At high temperatures the strengths of the Balmer lines depends solely on the flux-weighted gravity, which allows a precise direct determination of log g_{F} with an accuracy of 0.05 to 0.1 dex. We find a tight relationship between M_{bol} and log g_{F} in agreement with stellar evolution theory. Combining these new results with previous work on Local Group galaxies we obtain a new flux weighted gravity luminosity relationship (FGLR), which is very well defined and appears to be an excellent alternative tool to determine distances to galaxies.
The spectra of two early B-type supergiant stars in the Sculptor spiral galaxy NGC 300 are analysed by means of non-LTE line blanketed unified model atmospheres, aimed at determining their chemical composition and the fundamental stellar and wind parameters. For the first time a detailed chemical abundance pattern (He, C, N, O, Mg and Si) is obtained for a B-type supergiant beyond the Local Group. The derived stellar properties are consistent with those of other Local Group B-type supergiants of similar types and metallicities. One of the stars shows a near solar metallicity while the other on…
We have obtained spectra for 103 published globular cluster candidates in the Sculptor Group galaxies NGC 253 and NGC 55. On the basis of radial velocities and digitized plate images, 14 globular clusters are identified in NGC 253 and one probable globular cluster is identified in NGC 55. The majority of the objects in the sample appear to be background galaxies. We have obtained and analysed COSMOS plate scans of NGC 253 and NGC 55 and use these along with the spectroscopically identified clusters to define new samples of globular cluster candidates in the two galaxies which should have reduc…
We identified 21 new Planetary Nebula (PN) candidates in the Sculptor Group galaxy NGC 55. We determined a most likely distance of 2.00 +/- 0.2 Mpc using the Planetary Nebulae Luminosity Function (PNLF) method. The distance to NGC 55 is larger than previously determined distances, which means that the Sculptor Group is a bit further away from the Local Group than previously thought. The distance to NGC 55 is again similar to the distance of NGC 300, adding support to the suggestion that these galaxies form a bound pair.
In order to complete our HI survey of galaxies in the Sculptor group area, VLA observations of NGC 24 and NGC 45 are presented. These two galaxies of similar magnitude M_B ~ -17.4 lie in the background of the Sculptor group and are low surface brightness galaxies, especially NGC 45. The HI distribution and kinematics are regular for NGC 24 while NGC 45 exhibits a kinematical twist of its major axis. A tilted-ring model shows that the position angle of the major axis changes by ~25 degrees. A best-fit model of their mass distribution gives mass-to-light ratios for the stellar disk of 2.5 and 5.…
We present UBVI CCD photometry of the stellar contents and globular cluster(GC) candidates in the spiral galaxy NGC 300 in the Sculptor group. Color-magnitude diagrams for 18 OB associations having more than 30 member stars are presented. The slope of the initial mass function for the bright stars in NGC 300 is estimated to be Gamma = -2.6 +/- 0.3. Assuming the distance to NGC 300 of (m-M)_0 = 26.53 +/- 0.07, the mean absolute magnitude of three brightest blue stars is obtained to be <M_V^{BSG}(3)> = -8.95 mag. We have performed search for GCs in NGC 300 and have found 17 GC candidates in this…
We report here the results of a full analysis of all the ROSAT PSPC spectral imaging observations and all the ROSAT HRI high resolution imaging observations of the very nearby (D=2.1 Mpc) Sculptor galaxy, NGC 300. Many point sources are detected within the field, several of them showing evidence for variability, and we present full source lists detailing their X-ray properties, and attempt to classify them on the basis of their temporal, spectral and multi-wavelength characteristics. A black hole X-ray binary candidate, a supersoft source and several supernova remnants and HII regions are dete…
We present an analysis of Hubble Space Telescope/WFPC2 images of nine nearby galaxies in Sculptor. We derive their distances from the luminosity of the tip of the red giant branch stars with a typical accuracy of ~ 12%. Their distances are 4.21 Mpc (Sc22), 4.92 Mpc (DDO226), 3.94 Mpc (NGC253), 3.40 Mpc (KDG2), 3.34 Mpc (DDO6), 3.42 Mpc (ESO540-030), 4.43 Mpc (ESO245-05), 4.27 Mpc (UGCA442), and 3.91 Mpc (NGC7793). The galaxies are concentrated in several spatially separated loose groups around NGC300, NGC253, and NGC7793. The Sculptor galaxy complex together with the CVn I cloud and the Local …
We report here the results of spectral imaging observations with the ROSAT PSPC of the field surrounding the very nearby (D=3.38 Mpc) Sculptor galaxy, NGC7793. Many point sources are detected within the field, several of them showing evidence for variability. Seven sources are seen to lie within the optical confines of the system, the brightest (Lx ~ 9x10e38 erg/s), lying to the southern edge of NGC7793. This source, also observed to be variable, is seen now, not to be associated with a z=0.071 redshift QSO, as was previously thought. A number of the other sources within the NGC7793 disc are l…
We use CTIO 4-m Mosaic II images taken with the Washington $CM$ and Harris $R$ filters to identify candidate globular clusters in the six major galaxies of the Sculptor group: NGC 45, NGC 55, NGC 247, NGC 254, NGC 300, and NGC 7793. From follow-up spectroscopy with Hydra-CTIO, we find 19 new globular clusters in NGC 55, NGC 247, NGC 253, and NGC 300, bringing the total number of known Sculptor group globular clusters to 36. The newly discovered clusters have spectroscopic ages consistent with those of old Milky Way globular clusters, and the majority are metal-poor. Their luminosity function c…
Deep J, H, and K images are used to probe the evolved stellar contents in the central regions of the Sculptor group galaxies NGC55, NGC300, and NGC7793. The brightest stars are massive red supergiants (RSGs) with K ~ 15 - 15.5. The peak RSG brightness is constant to within ~0.5 mag in K, suggesting that NGC55, NGC300, and NGC7793 are at comparable distances. Comparisons with bright RSGs in the Magellanic Clouds indicate that the difference in distance modulus with respect to the LMC is = 7.5. A rich population of asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars, which isochrones indicate have ages between …
We have obtained deep images in the near-infrared J and K filters of four fields in the Sculptor Group spiral galaxy NGC 55 with the ESO VLT and ISAAC camera. For 40 long-period Cepheid variables in these fields which were recently discovered by Pietrzy{ń}ski et al., we have determined mean J and K magnitudes from observations at two epochs, and derived distance moduli from the observed PL relations in these bands. Using these values together with the previously measured distance moduli in the optical V and I bands, we have determined a total mean reddening of the NGC 55 Cepheids of E(B-V)=0.1…
We present UBVI surface photometry for 20.'5 X 20.'5 area of a late-type spiral galaxy NGC 300. In order to understand the morphological properties and luminosity distribution characteristics of NGC 300, we have derived isophotal maps, surface brightness profiles, ellipticity profiles, position angle profiles, and color profiles. By merging the I-band data of our surface brightness measurements with those of Boeker et al. (2002) based on Hubble Space Telescope observations, we have made combined I-band surface brightness profiles for the region of 0."02 < r < 500" and decomposed the profiles i…
We have detected, for the first time, Cepheid variables in the Sculptor Group SB(s)m galaxy NGC 55. From wide-field images obtained in the optical V and I bands during 77 nights in 2002-2003, we have found 143 Cepheids with periods ranging from 5.6 to 175.9 days. 133 of these objects have periods longer than 10 days, making NGC 55 to-date the galaxy with the largest known number of long-period Cepheids in the Sculptor Group. We construct period-luminosity relations from our data and obtain distance moduli corrected for the small foreground reddening to NGC 55 of 26.79 $\pm$ 0.04 mag (internal …
We report on the discovery of a Cepheid population in the Sculptor Group spiral galaxy NGC 247 for the first time. On the basis of wide-field images collected in photometric surveys in V and I bands which were conducted with three different telescopes and cameras, 23 Cepheid variables were discovered with periods ranging from 17 to 131 days. We have constructed the period-luminosity relations from these data and obtain distance moduli to NGC 247 of 28.20 $\pm$ 0.05 mag (internal error) in V, 28.04 $\pm$ 0.06 mag in I, and 27.80 $\pm$ 0.09 mag in the reddening-independent Wesenheit index. From …
We have discovered an Ofpe/WN9 (WN11 following Smith et al.) star in the Sculptor spiral galaxy NGC 300, the first object of this class found outside the Local Group, during a recent spectroscopic survey of blue supergiant stars obtained at the ESO VLT. The light curve over a five-month period in late 1999 displays a variability at the 0.1 mag level. The intermediate resolution spectra (3800-7200 A) show a very close resemblance to the Galactic LBV AG Car during minimum. We have performed a detailed non-LTE analysis of the stellar spectrum, and have derived a chemical abundance pattern which i…
In a previous paper, we reported on the discovery of more than a hundred new Cepheid variables in the Sculptor Group spiral NGC 300 from wide-field images taken in the B and V photometric bands at ESO/La Silla. In this paper, we present additional VI data, derive improved periods and mean magnitudes for the variables, and construct period-luminosity relations in the V, I and the reddening-independent (V-I) Wesenheit bands using 58 Cepheid variables with periods between 11 and 90 days. We obtain tightly defined relations, and by fitting the slopes determined for the LMC Cepheids by the OGLE II …
We have obtained deep near-infrared images in J and K filters of three fields in the Sculptor galaxy NGC 300 with the ESO VLT and ISAAC camera. For 16 Cepheid variables in these fields, we have determined J and K magnitudes at two different epochs, and have derived their mean magnitudes in these bands. The slopes of the resulting period-luminosity relations are in very good agreement with the slopes of these relations measured in the LMC by Persson et al. Fitting the LMC slopes to our data, we have derived distance moduli in J and K. Using these values together with the values derived in the o…
We have carried out the wind analysis of six A-type supergiants in NGC 300. The derived Wind Momentum-Luminosity Relationship is compared with that of Galactic and M31 blue supergiants and with theoretical models.
We present a study of the diffuse ionized gas (DIG) in three Sculptor group galaxies: NGC 55, NGC 253, and NGC 300. The study is based on narrow band imagery in H-alpha+[NII](6548+6583A) and [SII] (6717+6731A). We find that DIG contributes 33 to 58% of the total H-alpha luminosity in these galaxies, or 30 to 54% after correcting for scattered light. We find that NGC 300 has a higher fractional DIG luminosity than the other galaxies in our sample, but it is not clear whether this is a significant difference or an effect of the high inclination of the other galaxies. The diffuse emission, averag…
We present a multi-wavelength study of the properties of supernova remnants (SNRs) in the nearby Sculptor Group Sd galaxy NGC 7793. Using our own Very Large Array radio observations at 6 and 20 cm, as well as archived ROSAT X-ray data, previously published optical results and our own H-alpha image, we have searched for X-ray and radio counterparts to previously known optically-identified SNRs and for new previously unidentified SNRs at these two wavelength regimes. Only two of the 28 optically-identified SNRs are detected at another wavelength. The most noteworthy source in our study is N7793-…
We have obtained VLT low-resolution (~5 A) multi-object spectroscopy in the 4,000-5,000 A spectral range of about 70 blue supergiant candidates in the Sculptor Group spiral galaxy NGC 300. We present a detailed spectral catalog containing identification, magnitudes, colors and spectral types. We employ synthetic spectra to determine metal abundances for two A0 supergiants of the sample. In agreement with the expectations, the star closer to the galactic center is found to be more metal rich than the object at a larger galactocentric distance. Using the Balmer Hbeta line profile we have estimat…
An \hi survey of 10 dE/dS0 galaxies in the nearby Sculptor and Centaurus A groups was made using the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA). The observed galaxies have accurate distances derived by Jerjen et al (1998; 2000b) using the surface brightness fluctuation technique. Their absolute magnitudes are in the range $-9.5 > M_B > -15.3$. Only two of the ten galaxies were detected at our detection limit ($\sim 1.0 \times 10^6$ \msol for the Centaurus group and $\sim 5.3 \times 10^5$ \msol for the Sculptor group), the two dS0 galaxies ESO384-016 in the Centaurus A Group and NGC 59 in the Scu…
A study of morphology, kinematics and ionization structure of the IR merger NGC 5514, is presented. This study is based mainly on Integral 2D spectroscopy obtained on 4.2 m William Herschel Telescope (La Palma, Spain) and data from CASLEO (Argentina). Clear evidence of two extra-nuclear starbursts with young outflows and LINER activity are reported. One of these outflow generate a supergiant bubble, where the emission lines and kinematics maps show 4 extended ejections. These results suggest that the bubble is in the rupture phase.
We present broad-band infrared photometry for 52 late-type supergiants in the young Magellanic Clouds clusters NGC 330, NGC 1818, NGC 2004 and NGC 2100. Standard models are seen to differ in the temperature they predict for the red supergiant population on the order of 300K. It appears that these differences most probably due to the calibration of the mixing-length parameter, $α_{P}$, in the outermost layers of the stellar envelope. Due to the apparent model dependent nature of $α_{P}$ we do not quantitatively compare $α_{P}$ between models. Qualitatively, we find that $α_{P}$ decreases with i…
We present a study of the photometric variability of spectroscopically confirmed supergiants in NGC 300, comprising 28 epochs extending over a period of five months. We find 15 clearly photometrically variable blue supergiants in a sample of nearly 70 such stars, showing maximum light amplitudes ranging from 0.08 to 0.23 magnitudes in the V band, and one variable red supergiant. We show their light curves, and determine semi-periods for two A2 Ia stars. Assuming that the observed changes correspond to similar variations in the bolometric luminosity, we test for the influence of this variabilit…
We have obtained multi-object spectroscopy of luminous blue supergiants in NGC 3109, a galaxy at the periphery of the Local Group at ~1.3 Mpc. We present a detailed catalog including finding charts, V and I magnitudes, spectral classifications, and stellar radial velocities. The radial velocities are seen to trace the rotation curves obtained from studies of the HI gas. From quantitative analysis of eight B-type supergiants we find a mean oxygen abundance of 12+log(O/H) = 7.76 +/-0.07 (1-sigma systematic uncertainty), with a median result of 7.8. Given its distance, we highlight NGC 3109 as th…
We present a wide-field, high spatial and velocity resolution map of the entire extended HI distribution of the Local Group dwarf galaxy NGC 6822. The observations were obtained with the Australia Telescope Compact Array in mosaicing mode. The interstellar medium of NGC 6822 is shaped by the presence of numerous H{\sc i} holes and shells, including a supergiant shell, and the effects of tidal interaction, in the form of a tidal arm and an infalling or interacting HI complex. The HI shell is situated outside the optical galaxy and occupies roughly a quarter of the area of the main HI disk. It m…
We have identified a ring-shaped emission-line nebula and a possible bipolar outflow centered on the B1.5 supergiant Sher #25 in the Galactic giant HII region NGC 3603 (distance 6 kpc). The clumpy ring around Sher #25 appears to be tilted by 64 deg against the plane of the sky. Its semi-major axis (position angle approx. 165 deg) is 6.9" long, which corresponds to a ring diameter of 0.4 pc. The bipolar outflow filaments, presumably located above and below the ring plane on either side of Sher #25, show a separation of approx. 0.5 pc from the central star. High-resolution spectra show that the …
We report the discovery of a high CO(J=3-2)/CO(J=1-0) ratio gas with an arc-like distribution (``high-ratio gas arc'') surrounding the central star cluster of the supergiant HII region NGC 604 in the nearby spiral galaxy M 33, based on multi-J CO observations of a 5' $\times$ 5' region of NGC 604 conducted using the ASTE 10-m and NRO 45-m telescopes. The discovered ``high-ratio gas arc'' extends to the south-east to north-west direction with a size of $\sim$ 200 pc. The western part of the high-ratio gas arc closely coincides well with the shells of the HII regions traced by H$α$ and radio con…
We determined ages for 52 star clusters with masses < 10^6 solar masses in the low surface brightness spiral galaxy NGC 45. Four of these candidates are old globular clusters located in the bulge. The remaining ones span a large age range. The cluster ages suggest a continuous star/cluster formation history without evidence for bursts, consistent with the galaxy being located in a relatively unperturbed environment in the outskirts of the Sculptor group.
Disk galaxies often show prominent nonaxisymmetric features at near-infrared wavelengths. Such features may indicate variations in the surface density of stellar mass, contributions from young red supergiants in star forming regions, or substantial dust obscuration. To distinguish among these possibilities, we have searched for spatial variations in the 2.3 micron photometric CO index within the disks of three nearby galaxies (NGC 278, NGC 2649, & NGC 5713). This index measures the strength of the absorption bands of molecular CO in stellar atmospheres, and is strong in cool, low surface-gravi…
Stellar evolution calculations predict the flux-weighted gravity g/Teff^4 and absolute bolometric magnitude of blue supergiants to be strongly correlated. We use medium resolution multi-object spectroscopy of late B and early A supergiants in two spiral galaxies, NGC 300 and NGC 3621, to demonstrate the existence of such a relationship, which proves to be surprisingly tight. An analysis of high resolution spectra of blue supergiants in Local Group galaxies confirms this detection. We discuss the application of the relationship for extragalactic distance determinations and conservatively conclu…
Using the CTIO 4-m telescope, we have obtained optical spectra of HII regions in five Sculptor Group dwarf irregular galaxies. We derive oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur abundances from the HII region spectra. Oxygen abundances are derived via three different methods (the ``direct'' method, the empirical method guided by photoionization modeling of McGaugh (1991), and the purely empirical method of Pilyugin (2000)) and are compared. Significant systematic differences are found between the three methods, and we suggest that a recalibration of the empirical abundance scale is required. The N/O ratio…
Spectroscopic measurements of emission line ratios and velocities are presented for ionized gas across the central plane of NGC 55, a late-type galaxy in the Sculptor group. The low metallicity in NGC 55 leads to relatively low line ratios of [S II]/H$α$ and [N II]/H$α$ for H II regions as well as the diffuse ionized gas. These are the first spectroscopical measurements of line ratios in ionized gas exterior to the stellar disc of NGC 55. Analysis of the line ratios and the relative velocities of different features suggests that photoionization is a plausible explanation for the ionization of …
Physical and wind properties of Galactic B supergiants are presented based upon non-LTE line blanketed model atmospheres, including Sher 25 toward the NGC 3603 cluster. We compare Halpha derived wind densities with recent results for SMC B supergiants and generally confirm theoretical expectations for stronger winds amongst Galactic supergiants. Mid B supergiant winds are substantially weaker than predictions from current radiatively driven wind theory, a problem which is exacerbated if winds are already clumped in the Halpha line forming region. We find that the so-called `bistability jump' a…
We discuss HST FOS ultraviolet spectroscopy and NICMOS near-infrared photometry of four young super star clusters in the central region of the irregular starburst galaxy NGC 1569. The new observations coupled with previous HST WFPC2 photometry and ground-based optical spectroscopy allow us to isolate and age-date the hot and cool stellar components of these massive clusters. We analyze the two components A1 and A2 of the brightest super star cluster NGC 1569-A. This cluster received previous attention due to the simultaneous presence of Wolf-Rayet stars and red supergiants. The FOS spectra pro…
In spiral galaxies, the HI surface density declines with increasing radius to a point where it is seen to truncate dramatically in the best observed cases. It was anticipated that if the ambient radiation field is sufficiently strong, there exists a maximum radius beyond which the cold gas is unable to support itself against ionization. We have now succeeded in detecting ionized gas beyond the observed HI disk in spirals. Here, we report on our findings for the Sculptor galaxy NGC 253. The HI disks in Sculptor galaxies extend to only about 1.2 R_25 although we have detected ionized gas to the …
We have studied the candidate optical counterparts and the stellar population in the star-forming complex around a bright ULX in NGC4559, using HST/WFPC2, XMM-Newton/OM, and ground-based data. We find that the ULX is located near a small group of OB stars. The brightest point source in the Chandra error circle is consistent with a single blue supergiant of mass ~ 20 M_sun and age ~ 10 Myr. A few other stars are resolved inside the error circle: mostly blue and red supergiants with masses ~ 10-15 M_sun and ages ~ 20 Myr. This is consistent with the interpretation of this ULX as a black hole (BH…
This is the first paper of a series devoted to studying the population of blue massive stars in NGC 55, a galaxy of the Sculptor group at a distance of about 2 Mpc. We have obtained optical (3300-6210A) low-resolution spectra of blue massive stars with VLT-FORS2, which we have classified with the aid of Milky Way and Magellanic Cloud standard stars. We have developed the first census of massive blue stars in NGC 55. A study of stellar radial velocities shows agreement with existing HI rotational velocity curve work and reveals the presence of one object with peculiar velocity. A qualitative st…
NGC 4449 is an irregular galaxy with a moderately high star formation activity. The massive stars in NGC 4449 have given rise to many bright HII regions, superbubbles, supergiant shells, and "chimney-like" radial filaments. ROSAT X-ray observations of NGC 4449 have revealed four point-like sources and a wide-spread diffuse emission. The spectral properties of the diffuse component suggest that the emission originates from hot interstellar gas. We have compared deep ground-based H-alpha images with the X-ray images of NGC 4449 to determine the relationship between the hot (10^6 K) and the warm …
We present UBR and H$α$ imaging of NGC 1620, a highly inclined spiral galaxy that contains a large scale, arc-like feature of radius 3 kpc in its outer disk at a distance of $\sim$ 11 kpc from the center. What is unusual about this arc-like feature is its stellar nature and the presence of a luminous star cluster at its center. The arc is fragmented into HII region complexes and OB star clusters and shows two kinks in optical continuum light. It spans an angle of 220$^{\circ}$ on our U image and a full, though fragmented, circle on an unsharp masked R image. It is centered on a young star clus…
We present H- and K-band NIRSPEC spectroscopy of super star clusters (SSCs) in the irregular starburst galaxy NGC 1569, obtained at the Keck Observatory. We fit these photospheric spectra to NextGen model atmospheres to obtain effective spectral types of clusters, and find that the information in both H- and K-band spectra is necessary to remove degeneracy in the fits. The light of SSC B is unambiguously dominated by K0 supergiants (T_eff=4400 +- 100 K, log g=0.5 +- 0.5). The double cluster SSC A has higher T_eff (G5) and less tightly constrained surface gravity (log g=1.3 +- 1.3), consistent …
As part of an ongoing search for dwarf elliptical galaxies (dE) in the vicinity of the Local Group, we acquired deep B and R-band images for five dE candidates identified in the Sculptor (Scl) group region. We carried out a surface brightness fluctuation (SBF) analysis on the R-band images to measure the apparent fluctuation magnitude \bar{m}_R for each dE. Using predictions from stellar population synthesis models the galaxy distances were determined. All of these dE candidates turned out to be satellites of Scl group major members. A redshift measurement of the dE candidate ESO294-010 yielde…
We examine star clusters in the irregular, starburst galaxy NGC 1569 from HST images. In addition to the two known super star clusters, we identify 45 other clusters that are compact but resolved. Integrated UVI colors of the clusters span a large range, and suggest that ages range from 3 Myrs to 1 Gyr. However, most of the clusters were formed at the tail end of the recent starburst. Numerous clusters in addition to the know super star clusters are similar in luminosity to a small globular cluster. We examined the radial surface brightness of four of the clusters. Their half-light radii and c…
We present the results of stellar photometry of polar-ring galaxies NGC 2685 and NGC 4650A, using the archival data obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope's Wide Field Planetary Camera 2. Polar rings of these galaxies were resolved into ~800 and ~430 stellar objects in the B, V and Ic bands, considerable part of which are blue supergiants located in the young stellar complexes. The stellar features in the CM-diagrams are best represented by isochrones with metallicity Z = 0.008. The process of star formation in the polar rings of both galaxies was continuous and the age of the youngest detec…
The Type II-P supernova 2004dj in the nearby galaxy NGC 2403 occurred at a position coincident with object 96 in the list of luminous stars and clusters in this galaxy published by Sandage in 1984. The coincidence is established definitively through astrometric registration of our ground-based archival images of NGC 2403 with our recent images showing the SN. The archival images show that Sandage 96 is slightly resolved from the ground. Pre-outburst blue spectrograms obtained by Humphreys and Aaronson reveal that Sandage 96 has a composite spectrum, dominated in the blue region by A- and B-typ…
Spectroscopic abundance determinations for stars spanning a Hubble time in age are necessary in order to unambiguously determine the evolutionary histories of galaxies. Using FORS1 in Multi-Object Spectroscopy mode on ANTU (UT1) at the ESO-VLT on Paranal we obtained near infrared spectra from which we measured the equivalent widths of the two strongest Ca II triplet lines to determine metal abundances for a sample of Red Giant Branch stars, selected from ESO-NTT optical (I, V-I) photometry of three nearby, Local Group, galaxies: the Sculptor Dwarf Spheroidal, the Fornax Dwarf Spheroidal and th…
Ultra-luminous X-Ray sources are extra-nuclear point sources in external galaxies with $L_X=10^{39}$--$10^{41}$ erg/s and are among the most poorly understood X-ray sources. To help understand their nature, we are trying to identify their optical counterparts by combining images from the Hubble Space Telescope and the Chandra Observatory. Here we report upon the optical counterpart for the ULX in NGC 5204, which has average X-ray luminosity of $\sim3\times10^{39}$ erg/s and has varied by a factor of 50% over the last 10 years. A unique optical counterpart to this ULX is found by carefully comp…
We present a wide-field, high spatial and velocity resolution map of the entire extended HI distribution of the nearby Local Group dwarf galaxy NGC 6822. The observations were obtained with the Parkes single-dish telescope and the Australia Telescope Compact Array in mosaicing mode. NGC 6822 has an extended HI-disk which is shaped by the presence of numerous HI holes and shells, including a supergiant shell, and the effects of tidal interaction, in the form of a tidal arm and an infalling or interacting HI complex. These tidal features are not obvious in lower resolution data, and only the pro…
We present the results of stellar photometry of the polar-ring galaxy NGC 660 using the Hubble Space Telescope's archival data obtained with the Wide Field Planetary Camera 2. The final list of the resolved stars contains 550 objects, a considerable part of which are blue and red supergiants belonging to the polar ring. The analysis of the Colour Magnitude Diagram for polar ring stars shows that it is best represented by the isochrones with metallicity Z = 0.008. The process of star formation in the polar ring was continuous and the age of the youngest detected stars is about 7 Myr.
The central regions of the three brightest members of the Leo I galaxy group -- NGC 3368, NGC 3379, and NGC 3384 -- are investigated by means of 2D spectroscopy. In all three galaxies we have found separate circumnuclear stellar and gaseous subsystems -- more probably, disks -- whose spatial orientations and spins are connected to the spatial orientation of the supergiant intergalactic HI ring reported previously by Schneider et al. (1983) and Schneider (1985, 1989). In NGC 3368 the global gaseous disk seems also to be inclined to the symmetry plane of the stellar body, being probably of exter…
We present HST WFPC2 imaging of the nearby low-surface-brightness dwarf spheroidal galaxy ESO 410-G005, which has been resolved into stars for the first time. The resulting color-magnitude diagram for about 2500 stars shows a red giant branch branch with a tip at I=(22.4+-0.15), which yields a distance of D=(1.9+-0.2) Mpc. ESO 410-G005 is found to be metal-poor with a mean metallicity of (-1.8+-0.4) dex estimated from its red giant branch. Upper asymptotic giant branch stars appear to be present near the center of the galaxy, indicative of a substantial, centrally concentrated intermediate-age…
We present the results of a detailed UV-optical study of the nearby dwarf starburst galaxy NGC 4214 using multifilter HST/WFPC2+STIS photometry. The stellar extinction is found to be quite patchy, with some areas having values of E(4405-5495)< 0.1 mag and others, associated with star forming regions, much more heavily obscured, a result which is consistent with previous studies of the nebular extinction. We determined the ratio of blue-to-red supergiants and found it to be consistent with theoretical models for the metallicity of the SMC. The stellar IMF of the field in the range 20-100 solar …
The stellar content of the S0 galaxy NGC 5102 is investigated. A modest population of bright main sequence stars and red supergiants (RSGs) is detected throughout the western portion of the disk, and the star formation rate (SFR) during the past ten million years is estimated to have been 0.02 solar masses per year. RGB stars are traced out to galactocentric distances of 10 kpc, which corresponds to ~ 14 disk scale lengths. A large population of bright asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars are seen throughout the western portion of the disk, and it is concluded that (1) stars that formed within …
We present long slit spectrophotometry of regions V and X of the local group irregular galaxy NGC 6822. The data consist of VLT FORS observations in the 3450 to 7500 A range. We have obtained electron temperatures and densities using different line intensity ratios. We have derived the He, C, and O abundances relative to H based on recombination lines, the abundance ratios among these elements are almost independent of the temperature structure of the nebulae. We have also determined the N, O, Ne, S, Cl, and Ar abundances based on collisionally excited lines, the ratios of these abundances rel…
Multi-object spectroscopic observations of blue supergiants in NGC 3621, a spiral galaxy at a distance of 6.7 Mpc, carried out with the ESO VLT and FORS are presented. We demonstrate the feasibility of quantitative stellar spectroscopy at distances approaching a ten-fold increase over previous investigations by determining chemical composition, stellar parameters, reddening, extinction and wind properties of one of our targets, a supergiant of spectral type A1 Ia located in the outskirts of NGC 3621. The metallicity (determined from iron group elements) is reduced by a factor of two relative t…
