We quantify the intrinsic width of the red giant branches of three massive globular clusters in M31 in a search for metallicity spreads within these objects. We present HST/ACS observations of three massive clusters in M31, G78, G213, and G280. A thorough description of the photometry extraction and calibration is presented. After derivation of the color-magnitude diagrams, we quantify the intrinsic width of the red giant branch of each cluster. This width translates into a metallicity dispersion that indicates a complex star formation history for this type of system. For G78, sigma_[Fe/H]}=0.86 \pm 0.37; for G213, 0.89 \pm 0.20; and for G280, 1.03 \pm 0.26. We find that the metallicity dispersion of the clusters does not scale with mean metallicity. We also find no trend with the cluster mass. We discuss some possible formation scenarios that would explain our results.
We discuss the existence of a mass-metallicity relation among galactic halo globular clusters. The lack of any luminosity-metallicity correlation in globular cluster systems has been used as an argument against self-enrichment models of cluster formation. We show that such a relation is statistically present among the galactic Old Halo globulars. This observational correlation implies that the least massive old clusters are the most metal-rich. This is in contradiction with the idea that, if globular clusters were self-enriched systems, the most metal-rich clusters would also be the most massi…
Bimodality is a common feature of globular cluster (GC) color distributions in galaxies. Although it is well known that the GC system of the Milky Way is bimodal in metallicity, this has yet to be directly demonstrated for an elliptical galaxy. We use Lick index measurements from the literature to derive metallicities for 47 GCs in the giant Virgo elliptical galaxy NGC 4472. The resulting distribution shows clear evidence for two metallicity subpopulations of GCs.
We present a new technique for the determination of age and metallicity in composite stellar populations using Stromgren filters. Using principal component (PC) analysis on multi-color models, we isolate the range of values necessary to uniquely determine age and metallicity effects. The technique presented herein can only be applied to old (tau > 3 Gyrs) stellar systems composed of simple stellar populations, such as globular clusters and elliptical galaxies. Calibration using new photometry of 40 globular clusters with spectroscopic [Fe/H] values and main sequence fitted ages links the PC va…
We present low resolution UV-blue spectroscopic observations of red giant stars in the globular cluster M53 ([Fe/H]=-1.84), obtained to study primordial abundance variations and deep mixing via the CN and CH absorption bands. The metallicity of M53 makes it an attractive target: a bimodal distribution of 3883 angstrom CN bandstrength is common in moderate- and high-metallicity globular clusters ([Fe/H] > -1.6) but unusual in those of lower metallicity ([Fe/H] < -2.0). We find that M53 is an intermediate case, and has a broad but not strongly bimodal distribution of CN bandstrength, with CN and…
We present the results of moderate resolution spectroscopy for a globular cluster in the M81 group dwarf spheroidal galaxy DDO~78. The DDO78 globular cluster, 4 Milky Way globular clusters, spectroscopic and radial velocity standards were observed with the Long-slit spectrograph of the 6-m telescope (SAO RAS, Russia). Lick spectrophotometric indices were determined in the bandpasses adopted by Burstein et al. (1984). We have derived the mean metallicity of the globular cluster in DDO78 to be [Fe/H] = -1.6 +- 0.1 dex by taking the weighted mean of metallicities obtained from the strength of sev…
In this paper we study the properties of ten halo globular clusters in the nearby spiral galaxy M33. CCD images of M33 were obtained as a part of the BATC Colour Survey of the sky in 13 intermediate-band filters from 3800 to 10000Å. By aperture photometry, we obtain the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of these globular clusters. We estimate the ages of our sample clusters by comparing the photometry of each object with theoretical stellar population synthesis models for different values of metallicity. Our results suggest that eight of the ten sample halo globular clusters have ``intermed…
We report on the first high-resolution spectroscopy of 10 giants in LMC Globular Clusters in a wide age range, obtained with the newly commissioned spectrograph UVES at VLT UT2. These observations are used to derive oxygen and iron content of these clusters, and the abundances are then used to cast a more precise view, not only on the age-metallicity relation in the LMC, but also on the chemical evolution of this dwarf irregular galaxy.
We explore the self-enrichment hypothesis for globular cluster formation with respect to the star formation aspect. Following this scenario, the massive stars of a first stellar generation chemically enrich the globular progenitor cloud up to Galactic halo metallicities and sweep it into an expanding spherical shell of gas. This paper investigates the ability of this swept proto-globular cloud to become gravitationally unstable and, therefore, to seed the formation of second generation stars which may later on form a globular cluster. We use a simple model based on a linear perturbation theory…
When using Fe as a surrogate for ``metallicity'', the metallicity is best represented by the dominant species of Fe. Accordingly, we have derived a new globular cluster metallicity scale based on the equivalent widths of FeII lines measured from high resolution spectra of giant stars. The scale is primarily based on the results of analyses by the Lick-Texas group of 149 stars in 11 clusters, supplemented by other high resolution studies in five additional clusters. We also derive ab initio the true distance moduli for M3, M5, M13, M15, and M92 as a means of setting stellar surface gravities. W…
The globular cluster Omega Centauri (NGC 5139) is the most massive and brightest cluster in our Galaxy. It has also a moderately high mass to light ratio (3.6) and an anomalous flattening (0.83) for a globular cluster. This cluster is also very interesting because it is one of a few examples of globular clusters with a measurable spread in the metal abundance (see Da Costa & Willumsen 1981, Norris et al. 1996, and Suntzeff and Kraft 1996 and references therein) and then it offers a unique, big sample of nearby stars having all the same distance and reddening but showing different metallicity (…
We present an astrometry and photometry catalogue of globular cluster (GC) candidates detected with HST WFPC2 in a sample of 19 early-type galaxies, appropriate for comparison to the low-mass X-ray binary (LMXB) populations observed with Chandra. In a companion paper, we present the Chandra data and investigate the relation between these populations. We demonstrate that, although there is little evidence of a colour-magnitude correlation for the GCs, after estimating mass and metallicity from the photometry, under the assumption of a single age simple stellar population, there is a significant…
In this paper we present catalogs of photometric and spectroscopic data for M81 globular clusters (GCs). The catalogs include B- and V- photometric and reddening data of 95 GCs, and spectroscopic metallicities of 40 GCs in M81. Using these data, we make some statistical correlations. The results show that the distributions of intrinsic B and V colors and metallicities are bimodal, with metallicity peaks at [Fe/H]=-1.45 and -0.53, respectively as has been demonstrated for our Milky Way and M31. The relation between spectroscopic metallicity and intrinsic B and V color also exists as it does for…
We present the results of an observational study of the efficiency of deep mixing in globular cluster red giants as a function of stellar metallicity. We determine [C/Fe] abundances based on low-resolution spectra taken with the Kast spectrograph on the 3m Shane telescope at Lick Observatory. Spectra centered on the 4300 Angstrom CH absorption band were taken for 42 bright red giants in 11 Galactic globular clusters ranging in metallicity from M92 ([Fe/H]=-2.29) to NGC 6712 ([Fe/H]=-1.01). Carbon abundances were derived by comparing values of the CH bandstrength index S2(CH) measured from the …
We perform a series of numerical experiments to study how the nonlinear metallicity--color relations predicted by different stellar population models affect the color distributions observed in extragalactic globular cluster systems. % We present simulations in the $UBVRIJHK$ bandpasses based on five different sets of simple stellar population (SSP) models. The presence of photometric scatter in the colors is included as well. % We find that unimodal metallicity distributions frequently ``project'' into bimodal color distributions. The likelihood of this effect depends on both the mean and disp…
We present an improved calibration of photometric metallicity indicators, derived from the new metallicity scale for Globular Clusters presented by Carretta & Gratton (1997) and based on direct high resolution spectroscopy of 160 stars in 24 globular clusters. We have carefully recalibrated the traditional abundance indices based upon the red giant branch (RGB) morphology, both in the V,B-V and V,V-I planes, namely the dereddened colour at the luminosity level of the horizontal branch (HB), and the magnitude difference between the HB and the RBG at a given dereddened colour. Finally, we give n…
We investigate the universality of the globular cluster luminosity function (GCLF) and the use of this function as an extragalactic distance indicator. Previous studies have found an offset between GCLF distances and those obtained with other techniques. We show that this offset can be understood in terms of a metallicity effect. Specifically, the globular cluster systems used in distance scale studies have traditionally been those around elliptical galaxies. These systems have higher mean metallicities than the Milky Way globular cluster system. Consequently, the peak of the GCLF in the syste…
Mergers of globular clusters (GCs) once associated with dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxies have recently been suggested as an explanation for the bimodal horizontal branches (HBs) of some Galactic GCs, most notably NGC 1851, NGC 2808, and NGC 6229. Through analysis of the available color-magnitude diagrams for the GCs in the Fornax and Sagittarius dSph satellites of the Milky Way, as well as their metallicity distributions, we argue that the merger of two GCs would most likely produce a bimodal distribution in red giant branch (RGB) colors, or at least a significant broadening of the RGB, due to…
The Sombrero galaxy, NGC 4594, contains the most numerous globular cluster system of any nearby spiral. It is an ideal candidate in which to study the globular clusters and contrast them with those in Local Group spirals. Here we present B and I imaging from the CTIO Schmidt telescope which gives a field-of-view of 31' x 31'. Using DAOPHOT we have detected over 400 globular clusters and derived their magnitudes, B--I colors and photometric metallicities. We have attempted to separate our sample into disk and bulge/halo globular cluster populations, based on location in the galaxy. There is som…
We compare our compilation of the W' calcium index for 71 Galactic globular clusters to the widely used Zinn and West (1984 ApJS, 55, 45) [Fe/H] scale and to Carretta and Gratton's (1997 A&A Supplement 121, 95) scale from high-dispersion spectra analyzed with Kurucz (1992, private communication) model atmospheres. We find our calcium ranking to be tightly correlated with each comparison set, in a non-linear and a linear fashion, respectively. By combining our calcium index information with the Zinn and West ranking, we are able to rank the globular clusters in our sample with a typical precisi…
We present the results of combined optical and near-infrared photometry for the globular cluster systems of the giant ellipticals IC 4051 and NGC 3311. We use the reduced age-metallicity degeneracy in (V-I) vs.(V-H) color-color diagrams to derive the cumulative age distribution within the red sub-population of globular clusters and to search for age sub-populations. The age distribution is then compared to the one determined for simulated globular cluster systems in order to set constraints on the relative age and size of these globular cluster sub-populations. In both galaxies we find a signi…
We present stellar yields computed from detailed models of intermediate mass asymptotic giant branch stars of low metallicity. In this work, the whole main microphysics inputs have been updated, and in particular alpha-enhancement is explicitly taken into account both in the opacities and equation of state. The target of this work is to provide a basis to test the reliability of the AGB self-enrichment scenario for Globular Clusters of intermediate metallicity. These Globular Clusters exhibit well defined abundance patterns, which have often been interpreted as a consequence of the pollution o…
Globular clusters in most large galaxies are a mixture of metal-poor and metal-rich (bimodal), but the halo stars are almost entirely metal-rich. This and other lines of evidence argue that the metal-poor globular clusters formed within widely distributed 10^8-10^9 Solar masses gas clouds (supergiant GMCs) during an early burst in which most of the gas was ejected or unused till later rounds of star formation. New simulations of the growth of pre-galactic potential wells in the early universe now indicate that the initial power-law form of the globular cluster mass distribution (dN/dM ~ M^-1.8…
We determine the X-ray spectral properties of a sample of low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) which reside in globular clusters of M31, as well as five LMXBs in Galactic globular clusters and in the Large Magellanic Cloud using the ROSAT PSPC. We find a trend in the X-ray properties of the LMXBs as a function of globular cluster metallicity. The spectra of LMXBs become progressively softer as the metallicity of its environment increases. The one M31 globular cluster LMXB in our sample which has a metallicity greater than solar has spectral properties similar to those of LMXBs in the bulge of M31, …
We argue that all transient searches for planets in globular clusters have a very low detection probability. Planets of low metallicity stars typically do not reside at small orbital separations. The dependance of planetary system properties on metallicity is clearly seen when the quantity Ie=Mp[a(1-e)]^2 is considered; Mp, a, e, are the planet mass, semi-major axis, and eccentricity, respectively. In high metallicity systems there is a concentration of systems at high and low values of Ie, with a low-populated gap near Ie~0.3 M_J AU^2, where M_J is Jupiter's mass. In low metallicity systems t…
This paper presents 3600-5400 Angstroms integrated spectra of 19 globular clusters (or candidates) projected on the central regions of M31, r <=5.3 arcmin (approx 1.2 kpc). We check the cluster nature of these objects, and derive their ages, metallicities and reddenings. From the initial sample, 16 objects turn out to be true star clusters, two are Galactic dwarf stars, and one is a high redshift background galaxy. Only two clusters are found to be super metal rich, suggesting that this phenomenon is not very common. For some clusters, we cannot rule out the possibility that they are of interm…
We propose that the observed difference in the formation rates of bright low-mass X-ray binaries in metal-rich and metal-poor globular clusters can be explained by taking into account the difference in the stellar structure of main sequence donors with masses between ~0.85 Msun and ~1.25 Msun at different metallicities. This difference is caused by the absence of an outer convective zone in metal-poor main sequence stars in this mass range. In the result, magnetic braking, a powerful mechanism of orbital shrinkage, does not operate and dynamically formed main sequence - neutron star binaries f…
We collected a sample of 100 galaxies for which different observers have determined colour indices of globular cluster candidates. The sample includes representatives of galaxies of various morphological types and different luminosities. Colour indices (in most cases (V-I), but also (B-I) and (C-T1)) were transformed into metallicities [Fe/H] according to a relation by Kissler-Patig (1998). These data were analysed with the KMM software in order to estimate similarity of the distribution with uni- or bimodal Gaussian distribution. We found that 45 of 100 systems have bimodal metallicity distri…
The globular cluster (GC) systems of many galaxies reveal bimodal optical color distributions. Based on stellar evolutionary models and the bimodal colors and metallicities of Galactic GCs this is thought to reflect an underlying bimodal metallicity distribution. However, stars at many different phases of stellar evolution contribute to optical light. The I-H color is a much cleaner tracer of metallicity because it primarily samples the metallicity sensitive giant branch. Therefore, we use deep HST-NICMOS H, and WFPC2 optical observations, of M87 GCs to study their metallicity distribution. Th…
We have obtained V and I images of the lone globular cluster that belongs to the dwarf Local Group irregular galaxy known as WLM. The color-magnitude diagram of the cluster shows that it is a normal old globular cluster with a well-defined giant branch reaching to M_V=-2.5, a horizontal branch at M_V=+0.5, and a sub-giant branch extending to our photometry limit of M_V=+2.0. A best fit to theoretical isochrones indicates that this cluster has a metallicity of [Fe/H]=-1.52\pm0.08 and an age of 14.8\pm0.6 Gyr, thus indicating that it is similar to normal old halo globulars in our Galaxy. From th…
We present results derived from VLT-FORS2 spectra of 24 different globular clusters associated with the lenticular galaxy NGC3115. A subsample of 17 globular clusters have sufficiently high signal-to-noise to allow precision measurements of absorption line-strengths. Comparing these indices to new stellar population models by Thomas et al. we determine ages, metallicities and element abundance ratios. Our data are also compared with the Lick/IDS observations of Milky Way and M31 globular clusters. Unpublished higher order Balmer lines (HgammaA,F and HdeltaA,F) from the Lick/IDS observations ar…
We derive the frequency of occurrence of luminous long period variables (LLPVs) in globular clusters and in the Baade's Window field of the Galactic bulge. LLPVs occur only in clusters with [Fe/H]>/= -1.0. In these clusters their frequency of occurrence relative to the number of giant stars appears to be independent of metallicity. Integrated over all metallicities, Baade's Window appears to be deficient in LLPVs. We estimate [Fe/H] values for Baade's Window LLPVs from their period and a log P vs. [Fe/H] relation derived from cluster variables and find that LLPVs with [Fe/H]>/= 0.0 are absent …
Based on a model of globular cluster self-enrichment published in a previous paper, we present an explanation for the metallicity gradient observed throughout the galactic Old Halo. Our self-enrichment model is based on the ability of globular cluster progenitor clouds to retain the ejecta of a first generation of Type II Supernovae. The key point is that this ability depends on the pressure exerted on the progenitor cloud by the surrounding protogalactic medium and therefore on the location of the cloud in the protoGalaxy. Since there is no significant (if any) metallicity gradient in the who…
We report moderate resolution, high signal-to-noise spectroscopy of globular clusters around NGC 1399, the central cD galaxy in the Fornax cluster. We address issues as diverse as element abundances of globular clusters versus stellar populations in ellipticals, blue horizontal branches in metal-rich globular clusters, broad-band colors as metallicity tracers, possible overestimation of the age-metallicity degeneracy in globular clusters, and dark matter in the halo of NGC 1399. (...) The derived element abundances for the globular clusters span the entire range observed in the Milky Way and M…
We present new measurements of the metallicity of 131 RR Lyrae stars in the globular cluster Omega Centauri, using the hk index of the Caby photometric system. The hk method has distinct advantages over Delta-S and other techniques in determining the metallicity of RR Lyrae stars, and has allowed us to obtain the most complete and homogeneous metallicity data to date for the RR Lyrae stars in this cluster. For RR Lyrae stars in common with the Delta-S observations of Butler et al. (1978) and Gratton et al. (1986), we have found that our metallicities, [Fe/H](hk), deviate systematically from th…
We present a new technique to determine age and metallicity of old stellar populations (globular clusters and elliptical galaxies) using an iterative principal component analysis on narrow band (Strömgren) colors. Our technique is capable of reproducing globular cluster [Fe/H] values to 0.02 dex and CMD ages to 1.0 Gyrs. We also present preliminary results on the application of our technique to a sample of high mass, field ellipticals and low mass, cluster dwarf ellipticals. We confirm the results of earlier studies which find that globular clusters increase in metallicity with age and that ag…
This paper is the third in the series of papers on M81 globular clusters. In this paper, we present spatial and metal abundance properties of 95 M81 globular clusters, which comprise nearly half of all the M81 globular cluster system. These globular clusters are divided into two M81 metallicity groups by a KMM test. Our results show that, the metal-rich clusters did not demonstrate a centrally concentrated spatial distribution as ones in M31, and metal-poor clusters tend to be less spatially concentrated. In other words, the distribution of the metal-rich clusters in M81 is not very similar to…
We have derived ages and metallicities from co-added spectra of 131 globular clusters associated with the giant elliptical galaxy NGC 4472. Based upon a calibration with Galactic globular clusters, we find that our sample of globular clusters in NGC 4472 span a metallicity range of approximately -1.6 <= [Fe/H] <= 0 dex. There is evidence of a radial metallicity gradient in the globular cluster system, which is steeper than that seen in the underlying starlight. Determination of the absolute ages of the globular clusters is uncertain, but formally, the metal-poor population of globular clusters…
Using the SofI imager at ESO/NTT and NIRSPEC spectrograph at KeckII, we have obtained J,K images and echelle spectra covering the range 1.5 - 1.8 micron for the intermediate metallicity Bulge globular clusters NGC6539 and UKS1. We find [Fe/H]=-0.76 and -0.78, respectively, and an average alpha-enhancement of +0.44 dex and +0.31 dex, consistent with previous measurements of metal rich Bulge clusters, and favoring the scenario of rapid chemical enrichment. We also measure very low 12C/13C=4.5 +/-1 isotopic ratios in both clusters, suggesting that extra-mixing mechanisms due to cool bottom proces…
Galactic Globular Clusters (GCs) containing bright X sources (L_x > 10^{36} erg/s), commonly associated with Low Mass X-Ray Binaries (LMXBs), are found to be significantly denser and more metal-rich than normal non-X-ray clusters both in the Galaxy and in M31. Within a framework where LMXBs in GCs are generated via tidal captures in high-density clusters and (2+1) encounters in low-density globulars, the higher incidence of LMXBs with increasing metallicity is shown to be {\it intrinsic} and not just a by-product of other effects. Two possible mechanisms are examined: the first one assumes a d…
We have obtained 2640 CCD spectra with resolution ~4 Angstrom in the region 7250-9000 Angstroms for 976 stars lying near the red giant branches in color-magnitude diagrams of 52 Galactic globular clusters. Radial velocities of ~16 km/second accuracy per star determined from the spectra are combined with other criteria to assess quantitative membership probabilities. Measurements of the equivalent widths of the infrared calcium triplet lines yield a relative metal-abundance ranking with a precision that compares favorably to other techniques. Regressions between our system and those of others a…
We combine near-infrared photometry obtained with the VLT/ISAAC instrument and archival HST/WFPC2 optical images to determine VIK magnitudes and colours of globular clusters in two early-type galaxies, NGC 3115 and NGC 4365. The combination of near-IR and optical photometry provides a way to lift the age-metallicity degeneracy. For NGC 3115, the globular cluster colours reveal two major sub-populations, consistent with previous studies. By comparing the V-I, V-K colours of the NGC 3115 globular clusters with SSP models, we find that the colour difference between the two >10 Gyr old major sub-p…
Infrared JKs-band photometry of the Galactic globular clusters M15 and, for the first time, M56 is presented. We estimated the reddening (E(B-V)=0.18+/-0.08 mag) and distance modulus ((m-M)_V=15.43+/-0.30 mag) towards the poorly studied globular cluster M56. We combined our data with observations of other clusters from the literature (12 in total) to extend the [Fe/H] vs. Red Giant Branch (RGB) slope relation towards metal-poor clusters. Our best fit yields to [Fe/H]=-3.40(+/-0.22)-27.74(+/-2.35)x(RGB Slope), with an r.m.s.=0.20. The broader metallicity baseline greatly reduced the uncertainti…
The purpose of this study is to carry out a thorough investigation of the changes in morphology of the red giant branch (RGB) of Galactic globular clusters (GGC) as a function of metallicity, in the V,I bands. To this aim, two key points are developed in the course of the analysis. (a) Using our photometric V,I database for Galactic globular clusters (the largest homogeneous data sample to date; Rosenberg et al. 1999) we measure a complete set of metallicity indices, based on the morphology and position of the red-giant branch. In particular, we provide here the first calibration of the S, DV_…
Using photometric data from the 2MASS second incremental release point source catalog we constructed Ks vs. (J-Ks) color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) of Galactic globular clusters (GGCs) for which the JKs photometric data have been made available up to now. On the CMDs of 13 GGCs we identified RGB bump features and derived luminosities of bumps in Ks and in absolute Ks for 11 of them. We reconfirm the relation between abolute Ks magnitude of bump and metallicity [Fe/H]CG97 or [M/H] such that the luminosity of bump becomes brighter as metallicity [Fe/H]CG97 or [M/H] decreases. This result is simil…
Establishing the reliability with which stellar population parameters can be measured is vital to extragalactic astronomy. Galactic GCs provide an excellent medium in which to test the consistency of Single Stellar Population (SSP) models as they should be our best analogue to a homogeneous (single) stellar population. Here we present age, metallicity and $α$-element abundance measurements for 48 Galactic globular clusters (GCs) as determined from integrated spectra using Lick indices and SSP models from Thomas, Maraston & Korn, Lee & Worthey and Vazdekis et al. By comparing our new measuremen…
We analyse Keck spectra of 24 candidate globular clusters (GCs) associated with the spiral galaxy NGC 2683. We identify 19 bona fide GCs based on their recession velocities, of which 15 were suitable for stellar population analysis. Age and metallicity determinations reveal old ages in 14 out of 15 GCs. These old GCs exhibit age and metallicity distributions similar to that of the Milky Way GC system. One GC in NGC 2683 was found to exhibit an age of ~3 Gyr. The age, metallicity and alpha-element abundance of this centrally located GC are remarkably similar to the values found for the galactic…
In view of the important contributions of red giants to the integrated light in evolutionary synthesis calculations of old stellar populations in clusters and galaxies, we provide a comparison of theoretical isochrones computed from the Padova, Geneva, and Yale evolutionary tracks, respectively. Using the most recent version of the color-calibrated library of theoretical stellar spectra by Lejeune et al. (1999), the isochrones are converted in a uniform manner to the observational color-magnitude diagrams, (M(T1), C-T1) and (M(I), V-I), and compared with observed giant branches of typical glob…
We apply the giant branch slope-[Fe/H] relation derived by Kuchinski et al. [AJ, 109, 1131 (1995)] to a sample of open clusters. We find that the slope of the giant branch in K vs. (J-K) color-magnitude diagrams correlates with [Fe/H] for open clusters as it does for metal-rich globular clusters but that the open cluster data are systematically shifted to less negative values of giant branch slope, at constant [Fe/H]. We use isochrone models to examine the theoretical basis for this relationship and find that for a given value of [Fe/H], the slope of the relationship remains constant with decr…
We study the correlations between the distribution of stars on the horizontal branch (HB), the HB morphology, with some other properties of globular clusters (GCs) in a large sample of GCs. We strengthen previous results that a general correlation exists only between HB morphology and metallicity. Correlations with other properties, e.g., central density and core radius, exist only for GCs within a narrow metallicity range. We conjecture that the lack of correlations with present properties of GCs (besides metallicity), is because the variation of the HB morphologies between GCs having similar…
Using up-to-date stellar models and isochrones we determine the age of 25 galactic halo clusters. The clusters are distributed into four groups according to metallicity. We measure the absolute age of a reference cluster in each group, and then find the relative ages of the other clusters relative to this one. This combination yields the most reliable results. We find that the oldest cluster group on average is 11.8+-0.9 Gyr or 12.3+-0.3 Gyr old, depending on whether we include Arp2 and Rup106. The average age of all clusters is about 10.5 Gyr. Questions concerning a common age for all cluster…
Although stellar SED models are constantly improving and seem to show similar differential tendencies as measured spectra, their absolute properties (eg. absolute flux in different wavelength regions) can still differ significantly from the measured ones. Therefore, it is necessary to "color-calibrate" the theoretical spectra to obtain realistic model-based stellar spectra, which can then be used for many purposes, such as population synthesis models. In order to calibrate a hybrid library (consisting of the Kurucz -, the Allard and Hauschild -, and the Scholz-models) of theoretical SEDs, UBVR…
We have developed an homogeneous evolutionary scenario for H- and He-burning low-mass stars by computing updated stellar models for a wide metallicity and age range (0.0002$\le Z \le$0.004 and 9$\le t(Gyr) \le$15, respectively) suitable to study globular clusters. This theoretical scenario allows us to provide self-consistent predictions about the dependence of selected observational features of the colour-magnitude diagram, such as the brightness of the Turn Off (TO), Zero Age Horizontal Branch (ZAHB) and Red Giant Branch bump (BUMP), on the cluster metallicity and age. Taking into account th…
We explore a scenario where metal-poor globular clusters (GCs) are enriched by the first supernovae in the Universe. If the first stars in a 10^7 Msun dark halo were very massive (>180 Msun), then a pair instability supernova from a single massive star can produce sufficient iron to enrich 10^6 Msun of pristine, primordial gas to [Fe/H] ~ -2. In such a scenario, where a single massive star acts as a seed for halo GCs, the accurate abundance analysis of GC stars would allow a direct measurement of the Population III initial mass. Using the latest theoretical yields for zero metallicity stars in…
Using HST and the WFPC2 we have acquired very deep V- and I-band photometry of stars in NGC 2420 and NGC 2477 to study cluster luminosity functions at approximately solar metallicity. We have determined these cluster luminosity functions down to $M_I$ = 10.5 (0.2 M$_{\odot}$) and find that the luminosity function of NGC 2420 turns over at $M_I$ $\approx$ 9.0, and possibly stops altogether by $M_I$ $\approx$ 9.5. The luminosity function of NGC 2477 may flatten at $M_I$ $\geq$ 9.5. We compare our open cluster luminosity functions to the solar neighborhood field star luminosity function of Kroupa…
Prompted by a new catalogue of M31 globular clusters, we have collected together individual metallicity values for globular clusters in the Local Group. Although we briefly describe the globular cluster systems of the individual Local Group galaxies, the main thrust of our paper is to examine the collective properties. In this way we are simulating the dissipationless merger of the Local Group, into presumably an elliptical galaxy. Such a merger is dominated by the Milky Way and M31, which appear to be fairly typical examples of globular cluster systems of spiral galaxies. The Local Group `Ell…
The variable star population of the galactic globular cluster NGC 1851 (C0512-400) has been studied by CCD photometry, from observations made in the B, V, and I bands during 1993-4. Light curves are presented for 29 variables, seven of which are new discoveries. The behavior of the RR lyraes in the period-temperature diagram appears normal when compared to clusters which bracket the NGC 1851 metallicity. Reddening and metallicity are re-evaluated, with no compelling evidence to change from accepted values. Photometry for stars within an annulus with radii 80 and 260 arcsec agrees to better tha…
We have extended our evolutionary synthesis code, GALEV, to include Lick/IDS absorption-line indices for both simple and composite stellar population models (star clusters and galaxies), using the polynomial fitting functions of Worthey et al. (1994) and Worthey & Ottaviani (1997). We present a mathematically advanced Lick Index Analysis Tool (LINO) for the determination of ages and metallicities of globular clusters (CGs): An extensive grid of GALEV models for the evolution of star clusters at various metallicities over a Hubble time is compared to observed sets of Lick indices of varying com…
The Fornax cluster galaxies NGC 1399 and NGC 1404 are ideal for studying the effects of a cluster environment on globular cluster systems. Here we present new optical imaging of these two galaxies from both the Hubble Space Telescope's Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 and the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory's 1.5m telescope. The combination of both data sets provides unique insight on the spatial and colour distribution of globular clusters. From B-I colours, we find that both galaxies have a broad globular cluster metallicity distribution that is inconsistent with a single population…
We present spectroscopic abundances and radial velocities for giant stars in the Galactic globular cluster omega Centauri based on the CaII infrared triplet. Two samples of stars were observed: 234 stars at M_V = 1.25 on the lower giant branch at radial distances between 8 and 23arcmin, and 145 stars at M_V = -1.3 at radial distances between 3 and 22arcmin. Previous metallicity studies found a non-gaussian metallicity distribution containing a tail of metal-rich stars. We confirm these results except our unbiased cluster metallicity distributions are significantly narrower. They contain the fo…
With the ultimate aim of distinguishing between various models describing the formation of galaxy halos (e.g. radial or multi-phase collapse, random mergers), we have completed a spectroscopic study of the globular cluster system of M31. We present the results of deep, intermediate-resolution, fibre-optic spectroscopy of several hundred of the M31 globular clusters using the Wide Field Fibre Optic Spectrograph (WYFFOS) at the William Herschel Telescope in La Palma, Canary Islands. These observations have yielded precise radial velocities (+/-12 km/s) and metallicities (+/-0.26 dex) for over 20…
