I consider rare CP-violating decay modes $η(η')\toππ$ and note that an interaction that leads to such decays would necessarily induce a nucleon electric dipole moment (EDM). The experimental limits for the corresponding branching ratios are quite soft. I relate these decay branching ratios to the value of the induced nucleon EDM and translate the experimental limits on the neutron EDM into much more stringent constraints on these decay rates: $\frac{Γ_{η\toππ}}{Γ_η}\lesssim3.5\times10^{-14}$ and $\frac{Γ_{η'\toππ}}{Γ_η'}\lesssim1.8\times10^{-17}$.
We provide model-independent bounds on the rates of rare decays $η(η^\prime) \to ππ$ based on experimental limits on the neutron electric dipole moment (nEDM). Starting from phenomenological $η(η^\prime) ππ$ couplings, the nEDM arises at two loop level. The leading-order relativistic ChPT calculation with the minimal photon coupling to charged pions and a proton inside the loops leads to a finite, counter term-free result. This is an improvement upon previous estimates which used approximations in evaluating the two loop contribution and were plagued by divergences. While constraints on the $η…
We investigate the muon anomalous magnetic dipole moment (MDM), the muon electric dipole moment (EDM) and the lepton-flavour-violating decays of the $τ-$lepton, $τ\to μγ$ and $τ\to 3μ$, in the CP-violating Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) with nonuniversal soft-supersymmetry breaking. We evaluate numerically the muon EDM and the branching ratios $B(τ\to μγ)$ and $B(τ\to 3μ)$, after taking into account the experimental constraints from the electron EDM and muon MDM. Upon imposition of the experimental limits on our theoretical predictions for the aforementioned branching ratios and …
We calculate the decay rates for $\piee$, $\etaee$ and $\etamumu$ in chiral perturbation theory. The linear combination of counterterms necessary to render these amplitudes finite is fixed by the recently measured branching fraction for $\etamumu$. We find $\Br(\piee ) = 7\pm 1\times 10^{-8}$ and $\Br(\etaee )=5\pm 1\times 10^{-9}$.
We use the present upper bound on the neutron electric dipole moment to give an estimate for the upper limit of the CP-violating couplings of the $η(η')$ meson to the neutron. Using this result, we derive constraints on the CP-violating two-pion decays of the $η(η')$. Our results are relevant for the running and planned GlueX and LHCb measurements of rare meson decays.
We complete our derivation of upper limits on the CP violating $ηππ$ and $η'ππ$ couplings from an analysis of their two-loop contributions to the neutron electric dipole moment (nEDM). We use a phenomenological Lagrangian approach which is formulated in terms of hadronic degrees of freedom - nucleons and pseudoscalar mesons. The essential part of the Lagrangian contains the CP violating couplings between $η(η')$ and pions. Previously, we included photons using minimal substitution in case of the proton and charged pions. Now we extend our Lagrangian by adding the nonminimal couplings, i.e. ano…
Two different topics relevant for DA$Φ$NE and CEBAF, respectively, are covered. First we analyze the rare radiative eta decay mode $η\toππγγ$ within the framework of chiral perturbation theory at ${\cal O}(p^4)$. We then discuss virtual Compton scattering off the nucleon at low energies. Predictions for the two spin-independent generalized polarizabilities are shown.
Using a relativistic transport model ART1.0, we explore effects of nuclear symmetry energy on eta meson production and its rare decay to the dark U-boson in heavy-ion reactions from 0.2 to 10 GeV/nucleon available at several current and future facilities. The yield of eta mesons at sub-threshold energies is found to be very sensitive to the density dependence of nuclear symmetry energy. Above a beam energy of about 5 GeV/nucleon in Au+Au reactions, the sensitivity to symmetry energy disappears. Using the branching ratio of the rare eta decay (eta->gamma U) available in the literature, we estim…
Patterns of chiral symmetry violation and tests of the conservation of the fundamental C, P and CP symmetries are key physics issues in studies of the pi0, eta and eta' meson decays. These tests include searches for rare or forbidden decays and searches for asymmetries among the decay products in the not-so-rare decays. Some examples for the rare decays are eta-->2pi, eta-->4pi0 (CP tests), decays into an odd number of photons (e.g., eta-->3g) and the decay eta-->pi0e+e- (C tests). The experimental studies of the pi0, eta and eta' meson decays are carried out at four European accelerator resea…
Using the present upper bound on the neutron electric dipole moment, we give an estimate for the upper limit of the CP-violating couplings of the eta(eta') to the nucleon. Using this result, we then derive constraints on the CP-violating eta(eta')-pi-pi couplings, which define the two-pion CP-violating decays of the eta and eta' mesons. Our results are relevant for the running and planned measurements of rare decays of the eta and eta' mesons by the GlueX Collaboration at JLab and the LHCb Collaboration at CERN.
We study the nine possible rare charm meson decays D->Pl^+l^- (P=pi,K,eta,eta') using the Heavy Meson Chiral Lagrangians and find them to be dominated by the long distance contributions. The decay D^+ -> pi^+l^+l^- with the branching ratio 1*10^(-6) is expected to have the best chances for an early experimental discovery. The short distance contribution in the five Cabibbo suppressed channels arises via the c->ul^+l^- transition; we find that this contribution is detectable only in the D->pi l^+l^- decay, where it dominates the differential spectrum at high-q^2. The general Minimal Supersymmet…
We investigate the rare radiative eta decay modes eta -> pi+ pi- gamma gamma and eta -> pi0 pi0 gamma gamma within the framework of chiral lagrangians at o(p^4) and present photon spectra for both processes.
The branching ratios and photon spectra of the rare processes rho(omega)-> pi^0 pi^0 gamma, rho(omega) -> eta pi^0 gamma are calculated in the framework of the standard local quark Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model. Three types of diagrams are considered: the quark box and the pole diagrams with scalar (sigma,a_0(980)) and vector (rho,omega) mesons. The obtained estimations for the widths of the processes rho(omega)-> pi^0 pi^0 gamma are in satisfactory agreement with existing experimental data. Predictions are made for the widths of the processes rho(omega) -> eta pi^0 gamma.
We calculate the decay rate B-> X_s photon photon via intermediate psuedoscalar charmonium eta_c. This process is thought to be the main long-distance contribution which dominates the corresponding inclusive rare B decay. We point out that once the momentum dependence of eta_c-> photon photon conversion strength, due to off-shellness of the intermediate eta_c, is taken into account, the rate of this decay mode is reduced. The change in differential decay rate in region of spectrum immediately below m_{eta_c} is more significant. On the other hand, we point out that the unexpectedly large branc…
Following searches for photinos and very light gravitinos in invisible decays of psi and Upsilon, we discuss new limits on Light Dark Matter and U bosons, from psi and Upsilon decays, as well as rare decays of K+ and invisible decays of pi0, eta and eta' ... . The new limits involving the vector couplings of the U to quarks turn out, not surprisingly, to be much less restrictive than existing ones on axial couplings, from an axionlike behavior of a light U boson, tested in psi --> gamma U, Upsilon --> gamma U and K+ --> pi+ U decays (or as compared to the limit from parity-violation in atomic …
Selected results from experiments at COSY-Juelich are presented: an attempt to measure the mass of the eta meson with high precision (ANKE facility), first steps towards the detection of rare eta decays (WASA), and several measurements of KKbar-pair production (ANKE, COSY-11, MOMO).

The interplay between short- and long-distance contributions to the K_L-->mu+ mu- decay amplitude is analyzed. The long-distance piece is estimated using chiral perturbation theory techniques and large-N_C considerations, leading to a consistent description of the pi^0-->e+ e-, eta-->mu+ mu- and K_L-->mu+ mu- branching ratios.
Recent data on B->p pbar K, K0 pi pi and K Kbar K hint at a $\sim 2.3$ GeV object recoiling against a kaon. This could be the narrow state observed in J/ψ-> gamma xi. Nonobservation in p pbar annihilation implies ${\cal B}(ξ\to p\bar p) \sim$ few $\times 10^{-3}$, consistent with eta_c and J/ψdecays, but there are actual hints in p pbar -> phi phi and p p-> p pi^+ pi^- pi^+ pi^- p. Simple modeling shows ${\cal B}(B \to ξK){\cal B}(ξ\to p\bar p) \sim 1\times 10^{-6}$, appearing as a spike in the $p\bar p$ spectrum, with $\sim$ 30 events per 100 fb$^{-1}$; modes such as K K_s K_s, K phi phi, K4 …
Rare decays of K mesons are reviewed from the perspective of testing the ``ones'' and ``zeros'' of the standard model. Decays K^+ -> pi^+ nu anti-nu and K_L -> pi^0 nu anti-nu probe the one-loop effective Hamiltonian for s -> d nu anti-nu, and can constrain the rho, eta coordinates of the unitarity triangle. Decays such as K_L -> pi^0 l^+ l^-, K_L -> mu^+ mu^-, K^+ -> pi^+ l^+ l^- and K_L -> pi^+ pi^- e^+ e^- involve short-distance effects, as well as long-distance photon-induced contributions. Some comments are added on curious features of electroweak amplitudes in the ``gaugeless'' limit, an…
We investigate the rare radiative eta decay modes $η\toπ^+π^-γγ$ and $η\toπ^0π^0γγ$ within the framework of chiral perturbation theory at $O(p^4)$. We present photon spectra and partial decay rates for both processes as well as a Dalitz contour plot for the charged decay.
Exclusive charmless B decays to $η'$ and $η$ are studied in the standard effective Hamiltonian approach. The effective coefficients that take into account nonfactorizable effects in external and internal W-emission amplitudes are fixed by experiment. Factorization is applied to the matrix elements of QCD, electroweak penguin operators and next-to-leading corrections to penguin Wilson coefficients, which are renormalization-scheme dependent, are included, but the resultant amplitude is renormalization-scheme and -scale independent. We show that the unexpectedly large branching ratio of $B^\pm\t…
The existence of large ν_μ-ν_τmixing suggests the likelihood of large smuon-stau mixing in supersymmetric models, leading to μand τnumber violation. In addition to interesting signatures in slepton and neutralino production and decay, this will lead to rare τdecays, such as τ--> mu γ. Recently, it has been pointed out that the τ--> 3μbranching ratio could be substantial in the large \tanβregion of parameter space, due to an induced μ-τ-Higgs vertex. In this paper, another signature, τ--> μηis considered. In the large \tanβregion, it is shown that the branching ratio of τ--> μηis 8.4 times the …
The anomalously large like-sign dimuon charge asymmetry in semileptonic b-hadron decays recently measured by the D0 Collaboration may be hinting at the presence of CP-violating new physics in the mixing of B_s mesons. It has been suggested that the effect of a nonstandard spin-1 particle lighter than the b quark with flavor-changing couplings to b and s quarks can reproduce the D0 result within its one-sigma range. Here we explore the possibility that the new particle also couples to charged leptons l=e,mu and thus contributes to rare b -> s processes involving the leptons. We consider in part…
In this thesis we discuss a rational and data-based description of the single- and double-virutal transition form factors of the lightest pseudoscalar mesons. We obtain an accurate description of these in the spacelike and low-energy timelike regions. The phenomenological applications are wide. Among them, we discuss, the eta-eta' mixing, the rare pseudoscalar decays into a lepton pair and the pseudoscalar-pole contribution to the hadronic light-by-light part of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. In all these cases we discuss and illustrate the relevance of employing a data-based appro…
We review recent results on hadronic B meson decays including rare as well as non-suppressed decays. The main emphasis is on those channels relevant to measurement of CP violation in the coming B factories. After briefly describing flavor-tagged charm counting, we cover B -> DK(*), B -> charmless 2-body decays, inclusive eta' production, and final-state-interaction phases in B -> Psi K* and B -> D* rho.
The rare decay B -> K* nu anti-nu allows a transparent study of Z penguin and other electroweak penguin effects in New Physics (NP) scenarios in the absence of dipole operator contributions and Higgs (scalar) penguin contributions that are often more important than Z contributions in B -> K* l+l- and B(s) -> l+l- decays. We present a new analysis of B -> K* nu anti-nu with improved form factors and of the decays B -> K nu anti-nu and B -> X(s) nu anti-nu in the SM and in a number of NP scenarios like the general MSSM, general scenarios with modified Z/Z' penguins and in a singlet scalar extens…
We have previously proposed a light pseudoscalar Higgs boson in the next-to-minimal supersymmetric standard model (NMSSM), the A_1^0, as a candidate to explain the HyperCP observations in Sigma^+ -> p mu^+ mu^-. In this paper we calculate the rates for several other rare decay modes that can help confirm or refute this hypothesis. The first modes we evaluate are K_L -> pi pi A_1^0, which are interesting because they are under study by the KTeV Collaboration. We next turn to eta -> pi pi A_1^0, which are interesting because they are independent of the details of the flavor-changing sector of th…
The $η$ and $η^{\prime}$ mesons are nearly unique in the particle universe since they are almost Goldstone bosons and the dynamics of their decays are strongly constrained. The integrated $η$-meson samples collected in earlier experiments amount to $\sim10^{9}$ events. A new experiment, REDTOP (Rare Eta Decays To Probe New Physics), is being proposed, with the intent of collecting a data sample of order 10$^{14}$ $η$ (10$^{12}$ $η^{\prime}$) for studying very rare decays. Such statistics are sufficient for investigating several symmetry violations, and for searching for particles and fields be…
Simple dynamics, few available decay channels, and highly controlled radiative and loop corrections, make pion and muon decays a sensitive means of exploring details of the underlying symmetries. We review the current status of the rare decays: pi+ -> e+ nu, pi+ -> e+ nu gamma, pi+ -> pi0 e+ nu, and mu+ -> e+ nu nu-bar gamma. For the latter we report new preliminary values for the branching ratio B(E_gamma >10 MeV, theta_(e-gamma) > 30deg) = 4.365 (9)_stat (42)_syst x 10^{-3}, and the decay parameter eta-bar = 0.006 (17)_stat (18)_syst, both in excellent agreement with standard model predictio…
The sensitivity of the rare decays $η^{(\prime)}\toπ^{0}γγ$ and $η^{\prime}\toηγγ$ to signatures of a leptophobic $B$ boson in the MeV-GeV mass range is analyzed in this work. By adding an explicit $B$-boson resonance exchange, $η\to Bγ\toπ^{0}γγ$, to the Standard Model contributions from vector and scalar meson exchanges, and employing experimental data for the associated branching ratios, it allows us to improve the current constraints on the $B$-boson mass $m_{B}$ and coupling to Standard Model particles $α_{B}$. From these constraints and the analysis of the available experimental $γγ$ inv…
