Neuhaeuser & Comeron (1998, 1999) presented direct imaging evidence, as well as first spectra, of several young stellar and sub-stellar M6- to M8-type objects in the Cha I dark cloud. One of these objects is Cha Halpha 2, classified as brown dwarf candidate in several publications and suggested as possible binary in Neuhaeuser et al. (2002). We have searched around Cha Halpha 2 for close and faint companions with adaptive optics imaging. Two epochs of direct imaging data were taken with the Very Large Telescope (VLT) Adaptive Optics instrument NACO in February 2006 and March 2007 in Ks-band. We retrieved an earlier image from 2005 from the European Southern Observatory (ESO) Science Archive Facility, increasing the available time coverage. After confirmation of common proper motion, we deduce physical parameters of the objects by spectroscopy, like temperature and mass. We find Cha Halpha 2 to be a very close binary of ~0.16 arcsec separation, having a flux ratio of ~0.91, thus having almost equal brightness and indistinguishable spectral types within the errors. We show that the two tentative components of Cha Halpha 2 form a common proper motion pair, and that neither component is a non-moving background object. We even find evidence for orbital motion. A combined spectrum of both stars spanning optical and near-infrared parts of the spectral energy distribution yields a temperature of 3000+/-100 K, corresponding to a spectral type of M6+/-1 and a surface gravity of log g= 4.0 +0.75-0.5, both from a comparison with GAIA model atmospheres. We derive masses of ~0.110 Msun (>0.070 Msun) and ~0.124 Msun (>0.077 Msun) for the two components of Cha Halpha 2, i.e., probably low-mass stars, but one component could possibly be a brown dwarf.
We have identified three faint new members of the eta Chamaeleontis cluster. Spectral types of the new members are estimated to be ~M5 based on their TiO band strengths and broadband colors. With an age of 5-8 Myr for the cluster, masses of these new members are estimated to be ~0.08 Msun. All three display strong Li 6708A absorption and Halpha emission features including one with Halpha emission equivalent width ~60A along with HeI 6678 & 7605 A emission features that are characteristics of classical T Tauri stars.
We present optical spectra of eight candidate brown dwarfs and a previously known T Tauri star (Sz 33) of the Chamaeleon I dark cloud. We derived spectral types based on the strength of the TiO or VO absorption bands present in the spectra of these objects as well as on the PC3 index of Martin et al. (1999). Photometric data from the literature are used to estimate the bolometric luminosities for these sources. We apply D'Antona & Mazzitelli (1997) pre-main sequence evolutionary tracks and isochrones to derive masses and ages. Based on the presence of Halpha in emission, we confirm that most o…
We present 0.95--2.5 micron moderate (R = 500) resolution spectra of 19 ISOCAM detected sources in the Chamaeleon I dark cloud. Thirteen of these stars are candidate very low mass members of the cloud proposed by Persi et al. (2000 A&A 357:219) on basis of the mid-IR color excess. The sample also includes a bona-fide young brown dwarf (Cha Halpha 1), a transition --stellar/sub-stellar-- object (Cha Halpha 2), one previously known T Tauri star (Sz 33) and three ISOCAM sources with no mid-IR excess. The spectra of the mid-IR color excess sources are relatively flat and featureless in this wavele…
We present a census of circumstellar disks in the Chamaeleon I star-forming region. Using the Infrared Array Camera and the Multiband Imaging Photometer onboard the Spitzer Space Telescope, we have obtained images of Chamaeleon I at 3.6, 4.5, 5.8, 8.0, and 24 um. To search for new disk-bearing members of the cluster, we have performed spectroscopy on objects that have red colors in these data. Through this work, we have discovered four new members of Chamaeleon I with spectral types of M4, M6, M7.5, and L0. The first three objects are highly embedded (A_J~5) and reside near known protostars, i…
Optical spectroscopy has been obtained for 179 objects that have been previously identified as possible members of the cluster, that lack either accurate spectral types or clear evidence of membership, and that are optically visible (I<18). I have used these spectroscopic data and all other available constraints to evaluate the spectral classifications and membership status of a total sample of 288 candidate members of Chamaeleon I that have appeared in published studies of the cluster. The latest census of Chamaeleon I now contains 158 members, 8 of which are later than M6 and thus are likely…
This paper presents a study of the accretion properties of 19 very low mass objects (Mstar .01-0.1 Msun) in the regions Chamaeleon I and rho-Oph For 8 objects we obtained high resolution Halpha profiles and determined mass accretion rate Macc and accretion luminosity Lacc. Pabeta is detected in emission in 7 of the 10 rho-Oph objects, but only in one in Cha I. Using objects for which we have both a determination of Lacc from Halpha and a Pabeta detection, we show that the correlation between the Pabeta luminosity and luminosity Lacc, found by Muzerolle et al. (1998) for T Tauri stars in Taurus…
We present the results of a deep optical survey in the Corona Australis and Chamaeleon II star forming regions. Our optical photometry is combined with available near- and mid-infrared photometry to identify very low-mass candidate members in these dark clouds. In our Chamaeleon II field, only one object exhibits clear H-alpha emission, but the discrepancy between its optical and near-infrared colours suggests that it might be a foreground star. We also identify two objects without H-alpha emission that could be planetary mass members of Chamaeleon II. In Corona Australis, we find ten stars an…
We present low resolution (R = 500) near-infrared spectra of 46 candidate young stellar objects in the Chamaeleon I star-forming region recently detected in several deep photometric surveys of the cloud. Most of these stars have K < 12. In addition, we present spectra of 63 previously known southern hemisphere young stars mainly belonging to the Chamaeleon I and Lupus dark clouds. We describe near-infrared spectroscopic characteristics of these stars and use the water vapor indexes to derive spectral types for the new objects. Photometric data from the literature are used to estimate the bolom…
We discuss the spectral energy distribution of three very low mass objects in Chamaeleon I for which ground-based spectroscopy and photometry as well as ISO measurements in the mid-infrared are available (Comeron et al. 2000; Persi et al. 2000). One of these stars (Cha Halpha1) is a bona-fide brown dwarf, with mass 0.04-0.05 Msun. We show that the observed emission is very well described by models of circumstellar disks identical to those associated to T Tauri stars, scaled down to keep the ratio of the disk-to-star mass constant and to the appropriate stellar parameters. This result provides …
We describe a near-infrared imaging survey covering approximately 1 square deg of the Chamaeleon I dark cloud. The survey is complete for K < 15.0, H < 16.0, and J < 16.5, roughly two magnitudes more sensitive than previous large scale surveys. We use the large number of background stars detected to derive an accurate near-infrared extinction law for the cloud and select new candidate members with near-infrared color excesses. We list about 100 candidates of the cloud with K > 12.0, based on their positions in the J-H, H-K color-color diagram. These new stars have low luminosities (K > 12 -- 1…
We present observations of Halpha emission line profiles taken at Magellan Observatory for a sample of 39 young low-mass stars and brown dwarfs in the Taurus and Chamaeleon I star forming regions. We have identified 11 new substellar accretors, more than tripling the number of known brown dwarfs with measurable accretion activity. These include the lowest-mass objects yet seen with accretion, with masses down to ~0.015 Msun. Using models of Halpha emission produced in magnetospheric accretion flows, the most widely applicable primary calibrator now available, we determine the first estimates o…
We have compiled and studied photometric and spectroscopic data published in the literature of several star forming regions and young open clusters (Orion, Taurus, IC348, Sco-Cen Complex, Chamaeleon I, TW Hya association, sigma Orionis cluster, IC2391, alpha Per cluster and the Pleiades). Our goal was to seek the definition of a simple empirical criterion to classify stars or brown dwarfs which are accreting matter from a disk on the sole basis of low-resolution optical spectroscopic data. We show that using Halpha equivalent widths and spectral types we can statistically classify very young s…
Using the Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) aboard the Spitzer Space Telescope, we have obtained mid-infrared photometry for 25 and 18 low-mass members of the IC 348 and Chamaeleon I star-forming clusters, respectively (>M6, M<=0.08 Msun). We find that 42+/-13% and 50+/-17% of the two samples exhibit excess emission indicative of circumstellar disks. In comparison, the disk fractions for stellar members of these clusters are 33+/-4% and 45+/-7% (M0-M6, 0.7 Msun>=M>=0.1 Msun). The similarity of the disk fractions of stars and brown dwarfs is consistent with a common formation mechanism and indicates…
We report the outcome of the deep optical/infrared photometric survey of the central region (33 X 33 arcmin or 0.9 pc^2) of the eta Chamaeleontis pre-main sequence star cluster. The completeness limits of the photometry are I = 19.1, J = 18.2 and H = 17.6; faint enough to reveal low mass members down to the brown dwarf and planet boundary of ~ 13 M_Jup. We found no such low mass members in this region. Our result combined with a previous shallower (I = 17) but larger area survey indicates that low mass objects (0.013 < M/M(solar mass) < 0.075) either were not created in the eta Cha cluster or …
We present new L' (3.8-micron) observations of stars in the nearby (~97 pc) young (~6 Myr) compact cluster around eta Chamaeleontis, obtained with the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope in Paranal, Chile. Our data, combined with J,H, Ks photometry from the 2-Micron All Sky Survey, reveal that only two of the 12 members surveyed harbor L'-band excesses consistent with optically thick inner disks; both are also likely accretors. Intriguingly, two other stars with possible evidence for on-going accretion, albeit at very low rates, do not show significant infrared excess: this ma…
We have used images obtained with the Infrared Array Camera and the Multiband Imaging Photometer onboard the Spitzer Space Telescope to search for low-mass stars and brown dwarfs with circumstellar disks in the Chamaeleon I star-forming region. Through optical spectroscopy of sources with red colors in these data, we have identified seven new disk-bearing members of the cluster. Three of these objects are probably brown dwarfs according to their spectral types (M8, M8.5, M8-L0). Three of the other new members may have edge-on disks based on the shapes of their infrared spectral energy distribu…
We define a sample designed to select low-mass T Tauri stars and young brown dwarfs using DENIS data in the Chamaeleon II molecular cloud. We use a star count method to construct an extinction map of the Chamaeleon II cloud. We select our low-mass T Tauri star and young brown dwarf candidates by their strong infrared colour excess in the I-J/J-K_s colour-colour dereddened diagram. We retain only objects with colours I-J>2, and spatially distributed in groups around the cloud cores. This provides a sample of 70 stars of which 4 are previously known T Tauri stars. We have carefully checked the r…
We present spectroscopy of two candidate substellar members of the Chamaeleon I star-forming region. The candidates, which were identified photometrically by Oasa, Tamura, & Sugitani, have been observed at 1-2.5 micron during commissioning of the Gemini Near-Infrared Spectrograph. The late-type nature of one of the candidates, OTS 44, is confirmed through the detection of strong steam absorption bands. The other object, OTS 7, exhibits no late-type features and is likely a background star or galaxy. The gravity-sensitive shape of the H- and K-band continua demonstrate that OTS 44 is a young, p…
The results of a spectroscopic programme aiming to investigate the kinematics of the local interstellar medium components towards the Southern Coalsack and Chamaeleon-Musca dark clouds are presented. The analysis is based upon high-resolution (R ~ 60,000) spectra of the insterstellar NaI D absorption lines towards 63 B-type stars (d < 500 pc) selected to cover these clouds and the connecting area defined by the Galactic coordinates: 308 > l > 294 and -22 < b < 5. The radial velocities, column densities, velocity dispersions, colour excess and photometric distances to the stars are used to unde…
We have obtained low- and medium-resolution optical spectra of 20 candidate young low-mass stars and brown dwarfs in the nearby Chamaeleon II dark cloud, using the Magellan Baade telescope. We analyze these data in conjunction with near-infrared photometry from the 2-Micron All Sky Survey. We find that one target, [VCE2001] C41, exhibits broad H(alpha) emission as well as a variety of forbidden emission lines. These signatures are usually associated with accretion and outflow in young stars and brown dwarfs. Our spectra of C41 also reveal LiI in absorption and allow us to derive a spectral typ…
We describe an L-band photometric survey of 0.5 square deg of the Cha I dark cloud. The survey has a completeness limit of L < 11.0. Our survey detects 124 sources, including all known pre-main sequence stars with L < 11. The fraction of sources with near-IR excess emission is 58% +- 4% for K = 9-11. Cha I sources have bluer H-K and K-L colors than pre-main sequence stars in Taurus-Auriga. These sources also have a strong correlation between EW(H-alpha) and K-L. Stars with K-L < 0.6 have weak H-alpha emission; stars with K-L > 0.6 have strong H-alpha emission. Because many Cha I sources are he…
The dark clouds in the constellation of Chamaeleon have distances of 160-180 pc from the Sun and a total mass of ~5000 M_sun. The three main clouds, Cha I, II, and III, have angular sizes of a few square degrees and maximum extinctions of A_V=5-10. Most of the star formation in these clouds is occurring in Cha I, with the remainder in Cha II. The current census of Cha I contains 237 known members, 33 of which have spectral types indicative of brown dwarfs (>M6). Approximately 50 members of Cha II have been identified, including a few brown dwarfs. When interpreted with the evolutionary models …
We present the results of a multiplicity survey of 126 stars spanning ~0.1-3 solar masses in the ~2-Myr-old Chamaeleon I star-forming region, based on adaptive optics imaging with the ESO Very Large Telescope. Our observations have revealed 30 binaries and 6 triples, of which 19 and 4, respectively, are new discoveries. The overall multiplicity fraction we find for Cha I (~30%) is similar to those reported for other dispersed young associations, but significantly higher than seen in denser clusters and the field, for comparable samples. Both the frequency and the maximum separation of Cha I bi…
We discuss the results of the optical spectroscopic follow-up of pre-main sequence (PMS) objects and candidates selected in the Chamaeleon II dark cloud based on data from the Spitzer Legacy survey "From Molecular Cores to Planet Forming Disks" (c2d) and from previous surveys. Our sample includes both objects with infrared excess selected according to c2d criteria and referred to as Young Stellar Objects and other cloud members and candidates selected from complementary optical and near-infrared data. We characterize the sample of objects by deriving their physical parameters. The vast majorit…
We investigate the relationship between the C18O column density and the visual extinction in Chamaeleon I and in a part of the Chamaeleon III molecular cloud. The C18O column densities, N(C18O), are calculated from J=1-0 rotational line data observed with the SEST telescope. The visual extinctions, Av, are derived using JHK photometry from the 2MASS survey and the NICER color excess technique. In contrast with the previous results of Hayakawa et al. (2001), we find that the average N(C18O) / Av ratios are similar in Cha I and Cha III, and lie close to values derived for other clouds, i.e. N(C1…
We discuss the results from the combined IRAC and MIPS c2d Spitzer Legacy survey observations and complementary optical and near infrared data of the Chamaeleon II (Cha II) dark cloud. We perform a census of the young population of Cha II, in a mapped area of ~1.75 square degrees, and study the spatial distribution and properties of the cloud members and candidate pre-main sequence (PMS) objects and their circumstellar matter. From the analysis of the volume density of the PMS objects and candidates we find two tight groups of objects with volume densities higher than 25 solar masses per cubic…
We present maps of over 1.5 square degrees in Chamaeleon (Cha) II at 24, 70, and 160 micron observed with the Spitzer Space Telescope Multiband Imaging Photometer for Spitzer (MIPS) and a 1.2 square degree millimeter map from SIMBA on the Swedish-ESO Submillimetre Telescope (SEST). The c2d Spitzer Legacy Team's data reduction pipeline is described in detail. Over 1500 24 micron sources and 41 70 micron sources were detected by MIPS with fluxes greater than 10-sigma. More than 40 potential YSOs are identified with a MIPS and 2MASS color-color diagram and by their spectral indices, including two…
We present the outcomes of a Chandra X-ray Observatory snapshot study of five nearby Herbig Ae/Be (HAeBe) stars which are kinematically linked with the Oph-Sco-Cen Association (OSCA). Optical photometric and spectroscopic followup was conducted for the HD 104237 field. The principal result is the discovery of a compact group of pre-main sequence (PMS) stars associated with HD 104237 and its codistant, comoving B9 neighbor epsilon Chamaeleontis AB. We name the group after the most massive member. The group has five confirmed stellar systems ranging from spectral type B9-M5, including a remarkab…
We present the results of an optical multi-band survey for low-mass Pre-Main Sequence (PMS) stars and young Brown Dwarfs (BDs) in the Chamaeleon II (Cha II) dark cloud. This survey constitutes the complementary optical data to the c2d Spitzer Legacy survey in Cha II. Using the Wide-Field Imager (WFI) at the ESO 2.2m telescope, we surveyed a sky area of about 1.75 square degrees in Cha II. The region was observed in the Rc, Ic and z broad-bands, in H-alpha and in two medium-band filters centered at 856 and 914 nm. We select PMS star and young BD candidates using colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs)…
This paper presents an analysis of the nature of point sources discovered by DENIS in an area of 1.5 x 3 degrees around the Chamaeleon I molecular cloud. Most of the 30000 objects detected in the J band are background stars that were previously used to derive an accurate extinction map of the full area (Cambresy et al., 1997) using star count method. In the present work, we investigate the young stellar population of the cloud using the IJK photometric DENIS data. The whole sample of 126 already known YSOs, which are mainly T Tauri stars, are identified in the DENIS catalogue. Besides, we prop…
We have carried out a sensitive high-resolution imaging survey of stars in the young (6-8 Myr), nearby (97 pc) compact cluster around eta Chamaeleontis to search for stellar and sub-stellar companions. Given its youth and proximity, any sub-stellar companions are expected to be luminous, especially in the near infrared, and thus easier to detect next to their parent stars. Here, we present VLT/NACO adaptive optics imaging with companion detection limits for 17 eta Cha cluster members, and follow-up VLT/ISAAC near-infrared spectroscopy for companion candidates. The widest binary detected is ~0.…
During an imaging survey of the Chamaeleon I star-forming region with the ACS aboard HST, we have discovered a candidate substellar companion to the young low-mass star CHXR 73 (~2 Myr, M=0.35 Msun). We measure a projected separation of 1.3+/-0.03" for the companion, CHXR 73 B, which corresponds to 210 AU at the distance of the cluster. A near-infrared spectrum of this source obtained with CorMASS at the Magellan II telescope exhibits strong steam absorption that confirms its late-type nature (>=M9.5). In addition, the gravity-sensitive shapes of the H- and K-band continua demonstrate that CHX…
We present the results of a multiband survey for brown dwarfs in the Chamaeleon I dark cloud with the Wide Field Imager (WFI) camera at the ESO/MPG 2.2-m telescope on La Silla (Chile). The survey has revealed a substantial population of brown dwarfs in this southern star forming region. Candidates were selected from R, I and H-alpha imaging observations. We also observed in two medium-band filters, M855 and M915, for the purpose of spectral type determination. The former filter covers a wavelength range containing spectral features characteristic of M-dwarfs, while the latter lies in a relativ…
Sensitive X-ray imaging surveys provide a new and effective tool to establish the census of pre-main sequence (PMS) stars in nearby young stellar clusters. We report here a deep Chandra X-ray Observatory observation of PMS stars in the Chamaeleon I North cloud, achieving a limiting luminosity of log L_t ~ 27 erg/s (0.5-8 keV band) in a 0.8x0.8 pc region. Of the 107 X-ray sources, 37 are associated with Galactic stars of which 27 are previously recognized cloud members. These include three PMS brown dwarfs; the protostellar brown dwarf ISO 192 has a particularly high level of magnetic activity.…
We report new results in our continuing study of the unique compact (1 pc extent), nearby (d = 97 pc), young (t = 9 Myr) stellar cluster dominated by the B9 star eta Chamaeleontis. An optical photometric survey spanning 1.3 x 1.3 pc adds two M5-M5.5 weak-lined T Tauri (WTT) stars to the cluster inventory which is likely to be significantly complete for primaries with masses > 0.15 M_sun. The cluster now consists of 17 primaries and approximately 9 secondaries lying within 100 AU of their primaries. The apparent distribution of 9:7:1 single:binary:triple systems shows 2-4 x higher multiplicity …
We report the discovery of quiescent emission from molecular hydrogen gas located in the circumstellar disks of six pre-main sequence stars, including two weak-line T Tauri stars (TTS), and one Herbig AeBe star, in the Chamaeleon I star forming region. For two of these stars, we also place upper limits on the 2->1 S(1)/1->0 S(1) line ratios of 0.4 and 0.5. Of the 11 pre-main sequence sources now known to be sources of quiescent near-infrared hydrogen emission, four possess transitional disks, which suggests that detectable levels of H$_2$ emission and the presence of inner disk holes are corre…
We present a comprehensive study of disks around 81 young low-mass stars and brown dwarfs in the nearby ~2-Myr-old Chamaeleon I star-forming region. We use mid-infrared photometry from the Spitzer Space Telescope, supplemented by findings from ground-based high-resolution optical spectroscopy and adaptive optics imaging. We derive disk fractions of 52 (+/-6) % and 58 (+6/-7) % based on 8-micron and 24-micron colour excesses, respectively, consistent with those reported for other clusters of similar age. Within the uncertainties, the disk frequency in our sample of K3-M8 objects in Cha I does n…
I present observations of a new faint double, 2MASS J11011926-7732383AB, toward the Chamaeleon I star-forming region. From optical and near-infrared images of the pair, I measure a separation of 1.44" and extract RIJHK_s photometry of the components (I_A=17.21, dI=1.07, K_s A=11.97, dK_s=0.84). I use resolved optical spectroscopy to derive spectral types of M7.25 and M8.25 for the A and B components, respectively. Based on the strengths of gravity-sensitive features in these data, such as the Na I and K I absorption lines, I conclude that these objects are young members of Chamaeleon I rather …
A young, nearby compact aggregate of X-ray emitting pre-main sequence stars was recently discovered in the vicinity of eta Cha (B8V). In this paper, we further investigate this cluster: its membership, its environs and origins. ROSAT HRI X-ray data for the cluster's T Tauri stars show high levels of magnetic activity and variability. The cluster has an anomalous X-ray luminosity function compared to other young clusters, deficient in stars with low, but detectable X-ray luminosities. This suggests that many low-mass members have escaped the surveyed core region. Photographic photometry from th…
We present the results of medium resolution (Delta v = 60 km/s) spectropolarimetric observations across Halpha of a sample of B[e] and Herbig Be objects. A change in linear polarization across Halpha is detected in a large fraction of the objects. Halpha in the spectra of HD 37806 and HD 50138 each consist of a double-peaked polarized line and a superposed unpolarized single emission peak, suggesting two distinct line-forming regions. Multiple observations of HD 45677 allow for the separation of electron and dust scattering effects for the first time: the data indicate that the dust-scattering…
Eleven objects that have been reported as proto-planetary nebula or as young planetary nebulae that show very extended Halpha wings are presented. The extension of these wings is larger than 800 km/s. Data for two symbiotic stars that show this same characteristic is also presented. Raman scattering is the mechanism that best explains the wings in 10 of the PNe and in the 2 symbiotic stars. In the PN IRAS 20462+3416 the wing profile can be explained by very intense stellar wind.
High-resolution Halpha monitoring of Cyg X-1, HD226868 was carried out during 1996-2002 and the resultant spectra analysed in conjunction with 1.5-12 keV X-ray monitoring. We demonstrate that the Halpha line-profiles have complex variability on different timescales, controlled in particular by the orbital period and the focused wind model of mass loss. We find that long-term variability of the mass loss by the supergiant and short-term variability due to clumpy structure of the stellar wind dominate during the low/hard X-ray state and that X-ray photoionization has a relatively small influence…
Star-formation rates (SFRs) of galaxies are commonly calculated by converting the measured Halpha luminosities (L_Halpha) into current SFRs. This conversion is based on a constant initial mass function (IMF) independent of the total SFR. As recently recognised the maximum stellar mass in a star cluster is limited by the embedded total cluster mass and, in addition, the maximum embedded star cluster mass is constrained by the current SFR. The combination of these two relations leads to an integrated galaxial initial stellar mass function (IGIMF, the IMF for the whole galaxy) which is steeper in…
We present the change in the Halpha emission-line profile of the spectra of some AeBe Herbig stars. In the spectrum of VY Mon, Halpha may have one of three profile types: P Cyg, P Cyg III or single line in accordance with the brightness variations of the star. HD259431 now shows a double Halpha profile with the red component stronger than the blue component, while in the earlier observations the blue peak was higher than the red peak. Finally, the last Halpha profile of LkHalpha215 is very similar to that obtained by Finkenzeller et al.
Aims: The primary motivation for this project is to search for metal-rich star forming regions, in which, stars of super-solar metallicity will be created, as hopefully, will be extra-solar planets orbiting them ! Results: We find (pre-main sequence) model-dependent isochronal ages of the Lupus, Chamaeleon and CrA targets to be $9.1 \pm 2.1$ Myr, $4.5 \pm 1.6$ Myr and $9.0 \pm 3.9$ Myr respectively. The majority of the stars have Li I 6707.8A equivalent widths similar to, or above those of, their similar mass Pleiades counterparts, confirming their youthfulness. Most stars are kinematic member…
We present Halpha-derived star-formation rates (SFRs) for three z ~ 0.75 galaxy clusters. Our 1 sigma flux limit corresponds to a star-formation rate of 0.10-0.24 solar mass per year, and our minimum reliable Halpha + [N II] rest-frame equivalent width is 10Å. We show that Halpha narrowband imaging is an efficient method for measuring star formation in distant clusters. In two out of three clusters, we find that the fraction of star-forming galaxies increases with projected distance from the cluster center. We also find that the fraction of star-forming galaxies decreases with increasing local…
We have identified 38 candidates of intracluster planetary nebulae (ICPNe) in a $34'\times27'$ field in the core of the Virgo cluster based on the Suprime-Cam imaging through two narrow-band filters centered at the redshifted wavelengths of the [OIII]$λ=5007Å$ and the Halpha λ=6563Ålines. Broad-band images in V and R bands are used to check for any emissions in the adjacent continuum. We describe the method briefly and present the list of intracluster planetary nebulae candidates, together with their finding charts. The ICPN candidates show a highly inhomogeneous distribution, which may sugges…
We present the results of an experiment to image the interacting binary star beta Lyrae with data from the Navy Prototype Optical Interferometer (NPOI), using a differential phase technique to correct for the effects of the instrument and atmosphere on the interferometer phases. We take advantage of the fact that the visual primary of beta Lyrae and the visibility calibrator we used are both nearly unresolved and nearly centrally symmetric, and consequently have interferometric phases near zero. We used this property to detect and correct for the effects of the instrument and atmosphere on the…
